BASEBALL AND GARAGE DOORS

Submitted by:

Dennis Hanscom

C.H.A.P.S. Member The citizens of Grand have become accustomed to seeing the little white cars (and sometimes a pickup truck) with the yellow magnetic signs on the doors. Those are the vehicles driven by our C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers while cruising through our neighborhoods. In the mornings they are checking for unlocked doors and windows of our neighbors homes while they are away on vacation. To the C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers this is known as Vacation Watch.

Those same vehicles are also out patrolling at night looking for open garage doors, and unlit street lights while keeping an open eye for any suspicious activity. This segment of C.H.A.P.S.* is referred to as Evening Patrol. C.H.A.P.S.* also has a group that directs vendors to their designated spaces at the Spring and Fall garage sales. These hearty individuals serve from 3:30 a.m. until 7 a.m. on those days. Hey folks, it’s Spring Training time…well maybe! At copy deadline time this writer is still very optimistic. I will be able to view my Mariners… or Diamondbacks from my favorite second level seat as they play the Royals or Rangers. We are so fortunate to be able to enjoy the best stadium of all the spring training game sites. At least in my opinion, I say it is the best for two reasons: it offers the most shade and FREE parking. Not to mention two teams in Texas and Kansas City that are always in the mix at playoff time. C.H.A.P.S.* has approximately 150 volunteers. A large contingent of our C.H.A.P.S.* members also serve as Sundancers. Sundancers was founded in 2002 and made up of approximately 750 members. The Sundancers serve as the official volunteer group at Surprise Stadium. They handle parking of cars, ushering and other stadium duties.

So…the next time your doorbell rings in the evening to alert you of your garage door being open you may see the same friendly face that helped you find your seats at Surprise Stadium.

Our next meeting is March 22 at Cimarron at 1:30 p.m. You are most welcome to join us to learn more about C.H.A.P.S.*
