WEEDS

Friendly Reminder from Standards

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

From the

General Manager's

TAB L E

Goodbye To Our Winter Friends 'Tis the season to start bidding our winter friends, farewell. Although a different kind of a season, we rose from the shadow of COVID, seeking normality of the past, while we were pledged with starts and stops around every corner. Large successful golf events were followed by canceled showcases of musical abilities. An outbreak took down the Palm Center to a largely attended and spectacular week-long celebration of the Village Center. Indeed, it’s been a different kind of a season! The shadows have faded in favor of the season of the sun, which means goodbye to our winter friends -- Safe travels, we miss you already. During the summer, Lorena Nieto will plan activities for next fall into spring. Jeff Hochman and the superintendents will construct the forward tees on Desert Springs and Cimarron. The Falls restaurant will rise and the line for ice cream will become more manageable. The parking lots and maintained homes will receive new asphalt and Allison Adams is rolling out a new marketing program on personal training.

You are the MVP of our TEAM! Desert Living

• Top Producers at Long Realty West Valley • Sun City Grand Softball Sponsor • Service you deserve - a TEAM you can TRUST

For those of you who bask in the season of the sun, rest assured we’re here for you. Look for the Summer Concert Series. How about movie days? For you early raisers, Mimosa, and pastries mixers? Summer fun is bright at The Grand. My wish … the fall will be back before you know it and COVID will be a distant memory. Cheers! Rod Rankin 8

THE HOT CORNER W Bob Aiken President Sun City Grand Board of Directors

elcome to a new year in the life of your Sun City Grand Board. It was very humbling to be elected by my peers to lead our Board of Directors in the upcoming year. I am genuinely excited to be part of such a diverse team and share their enthusiasm to begin the work ahead of us.

Joining me on the team will be fellow officers Rene Mitchell, Vice President, Carol White, Secretary and Alan Meyer, Treasurer. Tony Spata joins us as a new director this year. By the time you read this, we will have filled our other two vacancies on the board that were created by the resignation

of Past President Earle Greenburg and the change of board member Rod Rankin to the permanent General Manager position, requiring his resignation. We look forward to a full complement of directors, as there is much work to be done this year. One of our first tasks as a new board is to establish our goals for the year – what is most important that we accomplish for our residents during the next year. My column next month will focus on those – so that you all know where we are going and what we will be working on. This is a good time to remind all of you that your board is charged with setting policy for the community. When you have issues that are operational in nature (this needs fixing, what are we doing about X, when will a particular

Grand Lifestyles | May 2022 | suncitygrand.com

event happen, etc.) you need to communicate directly with our CAM staff. The best way to do that is through the ASK US button once you login to your account on the website, suncitygrand.com. If you will all use this, I won’t have over 17,000 emails this year like Earle had! And it will help all of us focus on getting things done quickly for you, if the right person receives the request. Then your board can focus on the “big picture” items in our plan. Deal? Again, thank you all for your support of the board and we all look forward to bringing more great things to The Grand this year. Until next month, Stay Well, Keep Moving, and Be Kind to Others

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

No. 8 Cimarron (August 2008)

The transition from the winter ryegrass to the base summer bermuda grass is underway. the fairways with sand. This will also aid in the transition process giving the bermudagrass some essential items such as air, water and nutrients. During this time the courses are also heavily fertilized and irrigated. Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

The transition from the winter ryegrass to the base summer bermudagrass is underway. As the temperatures start to heat up, the bermudagrass starts to wake up from dormancy. At the same time, when the temperatures start to get too warm, the cool season (ryegrass) starts to die off. The staff aids in this transition by doing the following…chemical applications of products to encourage the ryegrass to become weak, and mechanical operations such as aerifing and slicing the turf. The nighttime temperatures need to be above 60 degrees for several days in a row and the soil temperature at a 4-inch depth needs to be above the 65-degree mark for the bermudagrass to start actively recovering. Areas that have had a lot of traffic and that are in the shade will tend to take longer to recover. Each course will be closed for 2-3 weeks as in the past several years to allow an outside company to deep tine aerify the courses with ¾ inch solid tines and to allow staff to continue to top-dress 10

A few years back the staff adopted some new maintenance practices on the greens to allow for golfers to have better conditions more often. Staff used to perform multiple aerations on the greens throughout the summer and golfers constantly played on aerified greens. Staff now does a very intense aerification during the 2-3-week closure which allows us to not have do any more throughout the summer (some minor disruption may still occur). It does take a little longer to recover but overall the golfers will putt less on aerified greens. Studies recommend that you disrupt at least 25% of the surface area each year to have a healthy base grass. This process achieves that goal.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

MANAGING MONEY PROBLEMS IN ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE This month’s article is taken from the National Institutes On Aging (NIA) Signs of Money Problems

Allison Adams Fitness Manager

People with Alzheimer’s disease often have problems managing their money. In fact, money problems may be one of the first noticeable signs of the disease. Early on, a person with Alzheimer’s may be able to perform basic tasks, such as paying bills, but he or she is likely to have problems with more complicated tasks, such as balancing a checkbook. As the disease gets worse, the person may try to hide financial problems to protect his or her independence. Or, the person may not realize that he or she is losing the ability to handle money matters.

Look for signs of money problems such as trouble counting change, paying for a purchase, calculating a tip, balancing a checkbook, or understanding a bank statement. The person may be afraid or worried when he or she talks about money. You may also find: n Unpaid and unopened bills n Lots of new purchases on a credit card bill n Strange new merchandise n Money missing from the person’s bank account A family member or trustee (someone who holds title to property and/or funds for the person) should check bank statements and other financial records each month to see how the person with Alzheimer’s disease is doing and step in if there are serious concerns. This can protect the person from becoming a victim of financial abuse or fraud.

Take Steps Early Many older adults will be suspicious of attempts to take

over their financial affairs. You can help the person with Alzheimer’s feel independent by: n Giving him or her small amounts of cash or voided checks to have on hand n Minimizing the spending limit on credit cards or having the cards cancelled n Telling the person that it is important to learn about finances, with his or her help To prevent serious problems, you may have to take charge of the person’s financial affairs through legal arrangements. It’s important to handle the transfer of financial authority with respect and understanding. You can get consent to manage the person’s finances via a durable power of attorney for finances, preferably while the person can still understand and approve the arrangement. You can also ensure that the person finalizes trusts and estate arrangements.

Guard Against Financial Abuse and Fraud People with Alzheimer’s may be victims of financial abuse or scams by dishonest people. Sometimes, the person behind the scam is a “friend” or family member. Telephone, email, or in-person scams can take many forms, such as: n Identity theft n Get-rich-quick offers n Phony offers of prizes or home or auto repairs

14

Insurance scams Health scams such as ads for unproven memory aids n Threats n n

Look for signs that the person with Alzheimer’s may be a victim of financial abuse or fraud: n There are signatures on checks or other papers don’t look like the person’s signature. n The person’s will has been changed without permission. n The person’s home is sold, and he or she did not agree to sell it. n The person has signed legal papers (such as a will, power of attorney, or joint deed to a house) without knowing what the papers mean. n Things that belong to you or the person with Alzheimer’s, such as clothes or jewelry, are missing from the home. If you think a person with Alzheimer’s may be the victim of a scam, contact your local police department. You can also contact the State consumer protection office or Area Agency on Aging office. CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

With An Eye Toward Maintaining Independence By Ken Reinstein

Colonnade resident Marilyn Vosburg met her husband Gail on the beach in Southern California and they were married for 54 years with two kids, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. After living on the West Coast, Gail was transferred to Ohio. “As people said, we went the wrong way, we should have gone the other way,” Marilyn says. “And our goal all along was to get back West. Really to go back to Southern California.” Eventually the couple ended up in Sun City Grand, moving there in 2003. As is the case for many Sun City Grand residents, Marilyn and Gail started to think about how to remain independent. They loved their home in Sun City Grand and yet they thought ahead to the future. “We were at the end of a very small cul-de-sac, so it was like a little peaceable kingdom back there with the coyotes and the bobcats and the javelina,” she says. “With one child on the West Coast and one child on the East Coast, we didn't really want to leave this area. Yet, we knew that we would have to look ahead to see how we're going to maintain our independence.” “Gail and I looked at The Colonnade twice. Came over, thought it was great, and even

put money down once. And then went home, talked it over and we really had a good location in Grand and I really did not want to move. And then when I was diagnosed with wet macular degeneration after my husband died, I thought, ‘Marilyn, you need to do something.’ And that was a big motivating factor for me.” The Colonnade was a big draw for Marilyn because it is part of Sun City Grand where she was active in the photo club since it its inception. And, where she could remain close to her friends. “I realized, ‘I've got to move while I can still get in,” Marilyn said. “Let's be honest. They're going to give me a health check, and if the doctor says I can't live independently, I'm stuck. So, we crunched the numbers, and it was something I could do and live here a long time. So, I thought the money that I would spend traveling, I'm going to put into making this my home at The Colonnade.” Once her wet macular degeneration happened, she could no longer drive, and she also was not able to read or write. One of the benefits at The Colonnade include transportation services. “I would say the ability to get to doctors’ appointments without having to go down your list of friends and think ‘how many times have I asked them?’” Marilyn says. “I have a big

Grand Lifestyles | May 2022 | suncitygrand.com

network of friends. But to know that I don't have to depend on them because I can call up drivers George or Dave to help me. They are such a plus for this organization. They are so nice, and it helps maintain my independence.” Another plus is the ability to have meals delivered to her casita. “Because knives and I are not a good combination anymore,” Marilyn adds. “To be able to have meals delivered is a real plus. I love the staff, including Joseph, Liz and Caleb. They're so helpful. And I can walk up to the Bistro and if it's not busy, I have a pretty good idea of where the empty tables are. I can go by sound. The team behind the counter Cartral, Carlandus and Damien are so helpful giving me just the information I need to navigate to the right table.” Then there are the fitness classes. “With exception of my

eyes. I am healthier now than five years ago,” Marilyn says. “I walk everywhere. I don't need anyone to come get me unless it's night. It’s the availability of classes that are included in the fee that I pay monthly, and April and Colleen are the best. I take 12 classes a week.” These are just a few of the many benefits residents of The Colonnade have. Everyone is welcome to visit our campus and enjoy a meal at The Bistro, which is open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Can Geckos Swim?

By: Anne Martin SCG Masters Swimming Team, the SCG Geckos

According to scientific texts, geckos can neither swim nor float; however, the Sun City Grand Masters Swim Team, the Geckos, disproves that almost daily. Led by Coach Cokie Lepinski and assistant, Sandie McTavish, the team meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 8:30-10 am, in the Adobe Pool. Workouts include warm-ups, coach-led drills in various strokes, and main sets for reinforcements. Recent evidence shows this hard work is paying off! In the Ron Johnson Invitational State Championship, held last November at the Plummer Aquatic Complete at

Grand Geckos Swim to Success

ASU, Sandie McTavish single-handedly won the “Small Team Division” for the Geckos. She earned six gold medals in the following events: 50, 100, 200 Breaststroke; 100, 200 IM; 200 Free. What a Gecko! Geckos lit up the Senior Olympics, February 27, at the Mesquite Grove Aquatic Center, Chandler. Dick LeRoy took gold in all five of his events: 200 and 500 Free; 50 and 200 Back; and I00 IM. His fellow Gecko, Sandie McTavish, grabbed gold in her three races: 200 Free, 200 Breaststroke; 200 IM. They must have needed a U-Haul to get home! March 12 found the Geckos having fun in the Sun City West Relays, a great way to spend a Saturday in friendly competition while learning from other swimmers. While the Geckos have hares, they also have a tortoise in Anne Martin, steady as she goes. Anne enrolled in a Colorado Masters Virtual Swim-Around-Hawaii Challenge from Oct. 1-March 31. At

first Anne chose to swim 150 miles, O’ahu to the Big Island. She hit that goal in 3.5 months, so she upped her swim to 200 miles (Moloka’i to Ni’ihau) and hit that mark Feb. 28th. Who knows where she’ll be next year!

Who said Geckos can’t even float? Drill techniques help.

Grand Lifestyles | May 2022 | suncitygrand.com

The Geckos are not always about competition. They are a giving, helpful, caring crew. The team hosted two Freestyle Clinics in Nov. and Dec. 2021 here in Grand’s Adobe Pool. In that same vein, Geckos are offering the continuous learn-to-swim program here in Grand. This Masters Team has the motto of “fun, friendship, fitness.” They like to work hard in practice but also have fun. Check them out during their scary Halloween workout. Swimming on a broom while wearing a witch’s black hat isn’t easy! The holiday season shows them choosing exercises from the ornaments on a tree of the coach’s design. They swim in sunshine and rain. Folks ask them how they can swim outside in 40-degree weather. Well the water IS warm!

Stats from 2019 Nationals still stand. Check out the hardware won by (l to r) Dick LeRoy, Sandie McTavish, and Cokie Lepinski.

Coaches McTavish and Lepinski share basic techniques with avid learners in their Freestyle Clinic.

Coach Sandie noted: “Aside from my personal need to compete and stay fit, there is a wonderful camaraderie in Masters Swimming, not only with teammates, but with other swimmers I meet from other teams. Swimming competitions have provided me with the opportunity to travel throughout the US, Canada and Europe. It is something I will be able to do for years to come.” Dick LeRoy spoke about swimming as his new “go to” sport since age 65 when his basketball knees told him it was time to use them in the water! He loves the varied workouts and says he competes to add spice to his workout progress. Dick likes to put a conclusion to the lesson he learned in team time at Adobe. He has solid praise to give to Coaches Cokie and Sandie who provide new and varied workouts, constant positive input, updated techniques and plenty of encouragement. Dick is now a dyed-inthe-wool Gecko! So, SCG residents, if you are walking Adobe’s inside track on a cold, rainy day, you don’t have to guess any more about what you are seeing in the pool. It’s the SCG Geckos doing what they do best -having fitness fun.

Instructors Cokie Lepinski and Mickey Stillwell (last two on r) celebrate with graduates of the Masters Adult Learn-to-Swim Program.

Geckos that Shine National times set in 2019 still stand because of the pandemic, and Geckos shone there. Vel Perry (85-89 age group) in Long Course won 3 firsts: 50 and 100 free and 100 back; second in 50 back. Short Course: 3 firsts in fifty free; 3 seconds in 100 free, 50 and 100 back. Dick LeRoy (75-59 age group)– top 10 in two relays in Short Course, with 4th and 9th place ranking.

DO YOU HAVE A SERVICE ANIMAL? “Service Animal” is defined by the ADA and Arizona Statutes as dogs that are individually trained to perform tasks for the benefit of a disabled person. A disabled person accompanied by their “service animal” must be allowed access to all our facilities and common areas where the public is generally allowed to go.

ABOUT THE

BOCCE BALL CLUB

The SCG Bocce Club, nearing 800 members, plays on the courts near the Adobe pools, tennis courts and lawn bowling courts. Any SCG resident may join. We’re a fun-loving and social club where no matter your skill level, it’s a fun game to learn and enjoy. Our season begins October 1st each year and ~50 leagues play a 14-week series starting in the October, November and January months. During our ‘season’, Drop-In Bocce is held on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons, with varying start times aligning with the wonderful AZ weather, please check our website, www.scgbocce.com. Come out and try it and we’ll show you how to play if you’re new at it. No fees or registration are required. At the time of publishing for this month’s Grand Lifestyles, the season’s tournaments are being held. We play with other Sun City communities and four SCG teams along with the other Sun Cities, were hosted on March 12th at Sun City West. Next season the event will be held here at our courts. On March 19th, the SCG Bocce Club Tournament was held. As our 2021-2-22 “season” leagues wrap up in mid-April, we’re already looking forward to next October for a lot of fun and socializing. While most league members stay with specific leagues from season-to-season, we also look for new leagues to be organized and for finding members who like to “sub only”. For detailed information, visit our webpage www.scgbocce.com or contact president@scgbocce.com with questions.

1st Place Winners If yours is a “service animal,” you are welcome to bring your animal to the Membership Office for an ID card. You would then be able to show the ID card everywhere you take your “service animal” in Sun City Grand. We do not want to know what your disability is, but you must identify a specific task your “service animal” is trained to perform for disability. An ID Card for your “service animal” is certainly not required – we are simply offering it for free as a courtesy to our disabled residents. 20

FROM THE SOFTBALL CLUB

S

FTBALL CLUB

GOLFS FOR VETS Submitted by: Bob Topham and Tom Ranalls SCG Residents

The SCG Softball Club held it’s tenth annual golf outing March 25th at Granite Falls South. Known for hitting a softball, 144 Club Members, fans and friends showed up to hit a much smaller ball for a great cause. For the sixth year, Soldier’s Best Friend was the designated beneficiary for the event. Soldier’s Best Friend is a local agency located in Peoria which supports our Veterans with PTSD and/or TBI (traumatic brain injuries) by matching each with a service dog to assist them with their special needs. All dogs in the program are “rescue dogs”, so one may say that the program is saving the life of the dog and its’ Veteran. Bob Cooper, VP and Event Coordinator for Soldier’s Best Friend, was presented a check/ cash for $5,414, delivering added resources for this great program.

One Veteran, Larry Marr, was also in attendance and was accompanied by his dog, Dodger. Larry answered many questions from club members following the presentation. It was a great time to provide a “THANK YOU” to him for his service to our country. We were also honored to have a Gold Star Mom—Tammy Pulaski attended.

WINNERS WERE: LADIES – 1st (net 56) Linda Aiken, Nancy Edwards, Georgia House and Peggy Hooley; 2nd (57) Vicki Hanson, Teri Gavazza, Debbie Bigelow and Yvonne Brooks; 3rd (57) Lisa Pelletier, Amy Sing, Jill McLean and Debra Weasea. MIXED – 1st (54) Gord Jones, Kris Jones, Terry Madsen and Bing Jones: 2nd (54) Garry Weslosky, Arlene Weslosky, Tom Ranalls and Kris Ranalls; 3rd (55) Deb Kanouse, Kurt Kanouse, Dave Layhee and Judy Ainsworth. LONG DRIVE – Vicki Hanson and Darren Duncan. KP – Gary Ambruz and Debbie Bigelow. LONGEST PUTT – Amy Sing and Tom Goetz. The SCG Softball Club has raised just over $304,069 over the past fourteen years supporting many charitable organizations. About $72,088 ($22,903 attributed to the Softball Golf Tournament) has been raised for Veteran related services supporting those who gave so much and who may be in need today. The community of Sun City Grand should feel proud of the efforts of this club and so many other clubs who do so much for those in need.

FANTASTIC. MANY THANKS. Now a special recognition to all the sponsors that donated $100 each for a total of $1,800 to sponsor a hole and provided a “grab bag” and water for each player. Tthe sponsors were: Nancy Muslin Heather Van Peursem Deby & Jim Curcio Tony Scardina Char-Wheeler 24

CURRENT EVENTS ROUNDTABLE PHIL AXELROD

Meets 12 times on Tue 6/14- 8/30 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

FEE $30 Let's meet weekly to discuss the current events of the day. Be prepared to actively participate as we debate the pros and cons of the topics selected by the group. Each participant is encouraged to bring an item or topic currently in the public's eye. We are not limited to political items for discussion. At the beginning of each session, I will poll the group for topics. Once we have a complete list we will vote on all topics and the one garnering the most votes will be the first topic discussed at each meeting. Lively discussions will ensue, followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and vigorous debate, this is the group for you.

UKULELE 101 JONI DEE

Meets 6 times on Tue 6/14 - 7/19 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

FEE $30

Ukulele 101 students will be introduced to the Ukulele, instrument care; Ukulele chords, strums, and picking patterns. By the end of class students will be comfortable playing 3 to 4 chord songs in different genres. Please bring a notebook and ukulele. I have some ukuleles to lend out.

EVERYTHING YOU MUST KNOW BEFORE GOING SOLAR MICHAEL SHEPP

Meets 1 time on Thur 6/16 or 7/14 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

FEE $10 Knowledge is power. Learn everything you must know before you ever invite a home solar installer into your home. Seniors are the target of scams and fraudulent solar installers. Presented by the home solar instructor with Rio Salado College along with PORA. By the end of this class you will be more knowledgeable than a solar salesman!

westerns than you can imagine from Hopalong Cassidy and The Lone Ranger to Gunsmoke and Bonanza; and children’s programming, both animated and live action, like Howdy Doody, Disneyland, The Mickey Mouse Club and Rocky and Bullwinkle. But we’ll also consider a few series that probably most of you have never even heard of like Martin Kane, Private Eye and Rocky King, Inside Detective. You won’t just be teased by a few seconds of clips of each series but will see anywhere from a few minutes to as much as 25-30 minutes of many. For about half the series we will be playing Name that Tune to see if you can identify the series from its theme music; for just about every series, we will be asking trivia questions regarding the characters, the performers who played them and the like; and in about half the classes we will quiz you on some of your favorite commercials from the Golden Age.

60’S ROCK: CREAM VINNIE BRUNO

Meets 1 time on Thur 8/4 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

FEE $15 Get out of the heat this summer and join Vinnie Bruno for the premiere of 60’s Rock: Cream, his newest lecture. Cream was formed in 1966 and is widely regarded as rock's first supergroup. We will journey with the band through their early days as members of many blues bands as they move toward the formation of Cream. Cream's music spanned many genres including hard rock (Sunshine of Your Love), psychedelic rock (White Room) to blues rock (Crossroads). Their album "Wheels of Fire" became the first platinum-selling double rock album in history. We will follow the band through their infamous internal band conflicts, to their farewell concert and to the trio's widely anticipated reunion tour in 2005. Cream was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS: THE GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION, PART 1 STEVE KATZ

open to members of the Republican clubs of Sun City Grand and Sun City West, conservatives and Independents from the surrounding areas, and guests. For May we have a Panel presenting a "Faith and Politics Summit." As Republicans we are committed to the conservative principles, objectives and ideals of the Republican Party on a local, state and federal level. We feel confident that the message that the May panel is prepared to give is one that covers issues that we, as Republicans, will benefit from. As noted, we encourage all conservative-minded people from whatever party to attend our monthly meetings during this primary season to hear the candidates present their positions and their reasons for running. SOUND & LIGHTING

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS” The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. For more information, contact Larry Dirksen – 623-363-5040 (Sound); or Bob Nix – 623-214-8280 (Lighting)

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

HOME SECURITY TECHNOLOGY UPDATE Dear Cappie, I know a few years ago you wrote about home security. I know you can’t recommend a specific brand, but can you suggest what we should look for when we shop for one? Mark, SCG full time resident Dear Mark, Good question: since our last column on home security systems, technology has changed quite a bit. However, you failed to mention if you were planning to hire a professional security firm to install the system or if you planned to do it yourself. Cost, house size, and amount of protection you desire are other factors that affect what is considered “best.” At the lowest end is a doorbell camera (battery or wired) that you can install yourself to monitor who is at your door, generally via an app on your smartphone. At the high end, there are package deals that include window and door sensors, internal and external cameras (with or without a control panel), night vision, motion detection, video security, voice control abilities, panic button/app for your phone, sirens, combined with smart home automation options and professional monitoring. Wired systems are generally more cost effective, but they include a more comprehensive and complex

installation process. This may include getting into your ceiling and wall space to hardwire connections to power sources for transmission of signals. Because such systems are hardwired, they generally are more reliable because they will not run out of power as a typical battery powered system might. Most wired security systems also have a backup 24–48-hour battery option in the event all electrical power fails. While wireless security systems tend to cost more per each option, they have their positives: they are generally easier to install, are less invasive (use radio waves to connect and monitor your devices), and offer additional features such as the ability to remotely arm and disarm your security system, monitor your cameras from your smartphone, remotely lock and unlock an individual door, and connect to other “smart” devices in your home as well. Many popular tech sites recommend the following for DIY options (in alphabetical

order): Frontpoint, Ring Alarm 8-Piece Kit, Simple Safe, Wyze. For pro home security systems: Abode, ADT, Vivint. Check these and other internet tech sites to read reviews for initial pricing and monthly cost for both DIY and professionally installed systems. You should be able to identify and prioritize your feature preferences to determine an approximate cost: n DIY or paid installation n Old or unused phones “working” as cameras at small cost or new hardware n Number of sensors needed; amount of wire/ cable needed n Notification system n Back-up n Ease of use n Integration with other home technologies

Special thanks to Gail for sharing this Halloween photo of Finn, her 7-yearold Chihuahua-Miniature Pinscher mix. Finn is a master of dog treat puzzles and is an oldschool home-security system: he always lets the family know if someone is at the door even before they hear the doorbell.

Most home security companies offer system bundles that range in price depending on the type and number of security products you choose. One size does not fit all. Consider this step one in learning about home security. 45

that is stopped for a pedestrian, even if you have a clear lane or a green traffic signal. In the interest of safety, if you see persons crossing any street, give them the right-of-way.

Surprise Boards and Commissions The City of Surprise is currently accepting applications for the Arts & Cultural Advisory Commission and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission. All Board/Commission positions are voluntary and you must reside in the City of Surprise. Applications are available online at surpriseaz.gov/boards. Please submit applications to the City Clerk’s Office in person by appointment or by email to clerk@ surpriseaz.gov. The Clerk’s office is available by phone at 623.222.1200.

Important Rules for Drivers, Pedestrians, Motorists and Bicyclists DRIVERS You must yield the right-ofway to pedestrians crossing the street in any marked or unmarked crosswalk. When the light turns green, you must still yield to pedestrians and vehicles in intersections. The law also requires vehicles to come to a complete stop at any school crossing when the crosswalk is occupied by any person. You may not pass another vehicle 46

PEDESTRIANS Keep in mind, in many instances and circumstances, it’s easier for you to see an approaching vehicle than it is for the driver of the vehicle to see you. Don’t assume an approaching vehicle sees you and will yield to you. Use crosswalks when provided or cross at an intersection. Make eye contact with the drivers of approaching vehicles whenever possible. Look before you step into a roadway. Even at a crosswalk, drivers must be given time to perceive and react to you stepping into the roadway. Avoid distractions, such as using phones or wearing headphones/earbuds, while crossing the road. Cross in a well-lit location at night. Follow all traffic rules, signs and signals that may be present where you are crossing. MOTORISTS AND BICYCLISTS As a motorist in Arizona, you always need to be aware of your surroundings on the roadways, whether it be motorcycles on the freeways or bicyclers on city streets. It is important as drivers and bicycle riders to adhere to all traffic laws and to watch out for one another on the roadways. In Arizona, it is legal for bicycles to ride in the traffic lanes, as long as they adhere to the same street laws as motorists. To be safe and avoid accidents, bicyclists should ride with traffic and be aware of hazards, cars and people around them. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program from the Arizona Department of Transportation created a few safety tips to help you bike smart and bike safely in Arizona: n Ride on the right-hand side of the road n Always ride with the flow of traffic. Riding against traffic is very dangerous n Ride predictably n Follow the same rules motorists do; travel in a straight line without swerving into other traffic lanes. n Obey traffic control devices (signs, signals, lane markings)

n Bicyclists must follow the rules of the road,

just like other vehicles n Protect your head - always wear a helmet, even on short trips n Follow lane markings n Don't turn left from the right lane; don't ride straight in a lane marked "Right-Turn Only" n Ride correctly through intersections n Use the right-most lane that goes in your direction. If you're heading straight, get in the through lane, not to the right of a turning vehicle n Signal before you move or stop - hand signals let drivers and others know what you intend to do next n Enter streets and intersections cautiously n Always check for oncoming traffic n Ride defensively on the road n Anticipate hazards and be ready to adjust your position in traffic n Don't ride on the sidewalk n Be visible and be seen - wear bright colors to increase visibility and make eye contact with drivers n Look behind you n Know how to look over your shoulder without swerving or losing your balance; side-view mirrors are an option n Make sure everything on your bicycle is in proper working condition before you ride
