FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

A MESSAGE FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER, DAVID TWIGGS Every community I have worked with has an endless to-do list; from large-scale enhancement projects to day-to-day operations, there is always something to accomplish. By no means is an endless to-do list negative as the community is continuously enhancing to improve the quality of life for its members. However, this continual effort may become frustrating or exhausting at times if we do not W. David Twiggs General Manager

find joy in what we're doing here—especially since there will always be more work waiting just around the corner! In the spirit of Thanksgiving, a time of year where many people across the country reflect and celebrate with thanks, here are a few recent accomplishments that I hope you can appreciate as we enter the holiday season. Since January 2021, we've made strides in advancing our technology with upgrades to our overall systems for increased security and performance. We completed the Granite Falls South Golf Course renovations with enhancements to bunkers, tee boxes, and greens for course playability. The Adobe and Fitness Centers installed a new misting system, resurfaced pool decks, and replaced pieces of operating equipment. Programming of live entertainment and events returned at the Grand Café and other community areas for socialization. And the start of several largescale enhancement projects, The Falls Restaurant, and the Village Center! There are many accomplishments Sun City Grand has made, and the credit goes to our CAM Staff and the hundreds of volunteers, including Board Committees and the Board of Directors. Thank you for your time and continued work on keeping a vibrant community!

Happy Thanksgiving!

This is also a goal of this club is to provide great way for someone to get an atmosphere where new interested in the game of golf. golfers can begin, experienced MEN PUTTERS golfers can improve their short Because of the success of game and matured golfers are the Lady Putters, the Men welcomed and can continue to decided to give it a try as play. Fun and sociability are well. This club is growing the club’s top priorities. This group plays on Sunday. quickly and is just another 10

MEN’S AND LADIES 9-HOLE CLUBS This is the great “next step” from the Lady Putters, Men Putters, Couples Putters, Cactus Practice or the 150 Club. If you want to experience golf a little more and move into a par 36 for 9 holes and tee off from yardages outside of 150 yards, then this is the club for you. This club is also right for the experienced golfer that just wants to play 9 holes. MEN’S AND LADIES 18-HOLE CLUBS If you have played some golf and want to be a little more competitive on 18 holes of golf, then this is the next step for you. Both these clubs are extremely active and strive to have both the competitive nature as well as camaraderie of friends and neighbors. The staff at Grand Golf has also made some adjustments to help grow the game of golf. We have had several golfers tell us that sometimes the course is too short from a particular set of tees, yet it is too long if they used another set. So, we have “combo tees” for all our tee boxes. We have essentially created 4 additional tee boxes. We have not stopped there. We implemented a “Game Improvement Tee.” This tee is about 1,000 yards shorter than our most forward tees. Whether you are a beginner, junior or an experienced

player that wants to work on your game, this new set of tees is sure to be a hit. I am very excited to say that we have just added another set of tees in between the current red tee and orange tee on Granite Falls South which will become the red tee. This provides all golfers another option to improve their game or to add variety. At the same time, we drastically improved the current orange tees. In the past, our tee colors were…Blue, White, Gold, Red, Orange With the new additional tee added on South the colors will now be…Black, Blue, White, Gold, Red, Orange For all the courses to match up with South, staff has removed the current red color at North, Cimarron and Desert Springs and the colors will now be…Black, Blue, White, Gold, Orange As the other courses have the new tee constructed, the red tee color will be added back into the rotation. This way, if you are a current gold tee player, you will now be a white tee player on all 4 courses. If you are a current red tee player and want to play the same tees, you will play the gold tee on all the courses. We are very excited for these changes and can’t wait for all the courses to have new tees for everyone to enjoy.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

PRINCIPLE OF BALANCE

Exercise is the best way to offset the elements that contribute to loss of balance. bacterial infections can affect the vestibular system, leading to possible interruptions in our balance. Symptoms of MS, high, or low blood pressure can also affect our balance.

Allison Adams Fitness Manager

Balance is a principle of fitness that gains more relevance as we age. In our younger years, balance seems to go unnoticed as we challenge our physicality when attempting a variety of activities. It seems only as we get older, that we start to see that our balance may not be what it used to be; that the risk of falling becomes a conscious threat.

Why is balance important?

Balance helps us to move safely through life with the ability to control our bodies. Living vertically requires us to support a rather tall structure compared to its base.

Why do we start to lose our balance?

Aside from aging, suffering from vertigo, viruses, or

Our bodies use our vision, inner ear system (the vestibular system mentioned above), and sensory feedback from the joints in our ankles, knees, spine, and neck to maintain balance. It’s an interesting fact that seniors, 65+, use more musculature to maintain static balance than young adults. So why does our balance become more challenging as we age? It is the loss of muscle mass through inactivity or injury, a decline in visual and inner ear cues, and/or the sensory feedback that can be altered due to chronic physical conditions. Cognitive decline influences our body’s ability to respond as quickly to proprioceptive responses.

What do we do about it? Keep moving!

Exercise is the best way to offset the elements that contribute to loss of balance.

Understandable for some, there may be steps to take before participating in an exercise program. Be cautious if loss of balance is an issue for you. Ask your doctor what they suggest. Physical therapy may be a needed beginning. For those who are affected due to high blood pressure, talk to your doctor about managing your salt intake. Low blood pressure? Drinking more water and limiting alcohol consumption may help. If you want to build your physical activity by starting at home, try this link for some simple exercises you can do. https://aginginplace.org/top10-elderly-balance-exercisesto-improve-balance-andcoordination/ . The Sun City Grand fitness centers offer the gym and group fitness classes to help improve balance. As a result of gaining strength, balance issues associated with muscle weakness will naturally improve. Pick up a copy of our group fitness schedule at the fitness centers, or go to www. suncitygrand.com/fitness to see

schedules online. Here are a few classes to consider: n Beginner Strength and Balance at Adobe n Pilates or Yoga/Pilates at Adobe and Cimarron n Cardio Interval at Adobe Total Body Conditioning at Cimarron n A variety of Yoga classes at Adobe and Cimarron n

If you have a movement disorder that is temporary or chronic, we’d like to recommend our Chair Yoga or PWR! Moves class at Adobe and Cimarron.

Swimming!

Swimming is a remarkable exercise to not only improve overall body strength, but is great for healthy heart and lungs through its cardiovascular component, all while reducing the impact on joints that may be sensitive due to arthritis. We look forward to seeing you running or walking throughout our neighborhoods or at the Sun City Grand fitness centers!

UNLOCKED DOORS, UNLOCKED WINDOWS AND OPEN GARAGE DOORS TO VOLUNTEER

Article submitted by Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. member

We are actively looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There are twoperson patrols where you select your days/ evenings to serve and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer.

We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call Theresa Fleck (CAM) 623-546-7473 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us!

THE HISTORY OF CHAPS

Ed Harrold, Director of Sun City Grand’s Community Association Management (CAM), introduced the idea of a vacation watch program at a 2001 meeting of Block Watch volunteers. A group of fifteen interested Sun City Grand homeowners met to organize a vacation watch service for residents who spend weeks/months away from their homes. With about two dozen volunteers and two golf carts, Vacation Watch inspections began in March 2001. In January 2004, C.H.A.P.S. expanded its service to include night-time patrolling of Sun City Grand neighborhoods. Today there are approximately 140 active volunteers using three Association vehicles. C.H.A.P.S. plays a large role in maintaining a low crime rate in Sun City Grand.

VACATION WATCH

When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center, as

well as online at grandinfo.com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. Two criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the request form. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.

GENERAL MEETINGS

We meet the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm at the Sonoran Plaza. We welcome you to come to one of our meetings to learn more about C.H.A.P.S. or you may call the CAM office at (623)546-7473 or the C.H.A.P.S. office at (623)546-7553.

DONATIONS

EVENING PATROL During evening hours, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. The volunteers look for breaches of security such as open garage doors, suspicious vehicles and/or people. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities.

C.H.A.P.S. welcomes all donations. Those wishing to make donations may do so at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and designate “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.” on the note line. Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 23, 1:30 p.m. at Sonoran Plaza.

*C.H.A.P.S.: Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service C.H.A.P.S. MEETS THE 4TH TUESDAY EVERY MONTH (except December) AT 1:30 P.M. IN THE SONORAN PLAZA. EVERYONE IS WELCOME. MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH C.H.A.P.S. 18

STORY OF CHANUKAH

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend, Jews had risen up against their GreekSyrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. When the Jews took part in the rededication of the Second Temple they witnessed what they believe to be a miracle. Even though there was only enough untainted olive oil to keep the menorah’s candles burning for a single day, the flames continued flickering for eight nights, leaving them time to find a fresh supply. This wondrous event inspired Jewish sages to proclaim a yearly eight day festival. For that reason, only one candle is lit on the first night. Two candles are lit on the second night. Three candles are lit on the third night until all eight candles are lit on the last night. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with lighting of the Menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts.

“I’VE BEEN WORKING ON THE RAILROAD”

In mid September, Jim Fasano (GCRR Track Foreman) and his team of “gandy dancers” began preparing the Grand Central Railroad for normal operations. Residents love to bring their grandchildren to the Train Park to watch the trains run and hopefully get their

picture taken holding Thomas the Train. They enjoy using the “hand controller” to operate the trains themselves and point out all of the many interesting buildings, people, and animals that are located around the layout, but few understand what goes into making the magic happen. This summer there was an article in the Grand Lifestyles magazine highlighting the hard work of two of our residents that are helping to refurbish the scenescapes around the layout. The next major project begins when we have to take up whole sections of track to recondition the “ballast” and repair the track exactly like you see on Grand Avenue. While on a smaller scale, the process is the same (lay the track, add and tamp the ballast, and level the track). As you can see in the pictures, it is a slow and tedious process. In addition, all of the track that does not

Grand Lifestyles | November 2021 | suncitygrand.com

require complete replacement must still be re-leveled and cleaned prior to use. Not so easily seen is the electrical component that provides power to the track and all other accessories. Our lead electrician (Jim Miller), with help from other members, spends countless hours keeping this “unseen” part of the layout working. Last, there are the trains that run around layout. These are all owned and maintained by the members themselves. So the next time you visit the Train Park please take a minute to thank the “train guys” for their hard work that makes this unique amenity possible. Thanks to Bob McLean for the photographs. GRAND LADIES GOLF ASSOCIATION

Steps Up to Serve Our Neighbors in Need

Raises Over $54,000 and Donates Over 13,600 Pounds of Food in the Last Two Years As many clubs in Sun City Grand have done, the Grand Ladies Golf Association has adopted a local charity. GLGA, also known as the Grand Ladies 18 hole League have adopted Valley View Community Food Bank. The group has become a vital source for this much needed neighborhood food bank, and now the need has never been greater. It is sometimes hard for those of us that live in this paradise we call home, to remember that outside our walls people are still struggling with the basics of life, including food insecurity. That is why the Hunger Fighters Team led by Jill McLean and Deb Coulter,

and the GLGA should be commended for their unfailing support. This past year the GLGA members decorated boxes at Christmas and filled them with special items for a holiday feast. Valley View added a turkey to each box. At Easter, we decorated baskets or boxes filled with food stuffs as well as gifts for the children. For Cinco de Mayo, GLGA members filled bags with special items to celebrate this fun Mexican holiday in the hopes that our contributions help families have foods that provide a festive atmosphere around the table.

Highlights for the year included, “The 20 Days of Giving” drive that contributed 60 boxes of food filled with 780 pounds of holidays foods and Christmas items. The Easter Drive contributed 80 Easter bags filled with 850 pounds of food and Easter goodies. What a blessing to our West Valley Community. In November of 2019 thru October of 2020—$26,390 was raised and 5580 pounds of food was donated. This year November 2020 thru September 2021—$27,942 has been raised and 8075 pounds of food has been donated. Valley View Community Food Bank founder, Jesse Ramirez Sr., stated “Between April thru July 2021 Valley View Food Bank has served 35,160 family members and distributed 8790 food boxes per month. Food insecurity has greatly impacted the West Valley and we are blessed by the ongoing generosity of the GLGA. We are honored to continue our relationship with the GLGA in 2021/2022”. Please consider donating to

30

the Hunger Fighters efforts— food and/or cash or check. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. A member of the GLGA Hunger Fighters team will be happy to pick up your contributions. As we approach the holidays, our goal is to provide healthy food that can be enjoyed by the families around a table celebrating the season. Sharing our gratitude and thankfulness is shown throughout support of our neighbors. Come join us. If you would like more information about Valley View Community Food Bank or have a donation, please contact Jill McLean at jillmclean@comcast.net or Deb Counter at frhg@ aol.com. WORLD OF ILLUMINATION

TOMBSTONE & BISBEE

DECEMBER 3RD-5TH $649 (BASED UPON DOUBLE OCCUPANCY) $200 (SINGLE SUPPLEMENT)

DECEMBER 15TH, WEDNESDAY..................... $65

DECEMBER 30TH, THURSDAY......................... $95

We’re off to explore the nation’s largest animated light show—World of Illumination! This holiday extravaganza is a symphony of light and sound, masterfully synchronized to your favorite holiday music. The technology behind Illumination is wild, using the most advanced hardware and software the lighting world has to offer—millions of lights— making it the first fully animated interactive holiday show in the Southwest. We’ll kick back and enjoy this drive-through experience from the comfort of our own vans, then top it all off with a stop for Christmas cookies served with hot coffee and Bailey’s Irish Cream. Delicious!

Entertain your out-of-town guests this holiday season with this wild west tour to Tombstone— where they wanna go, then to Bisbee—where they oughta go! We’ll head south, with a stop for coffee & goodies, on our way to “The Town Too Tough To Die”! Tombstone, with its rowdy, drunken, bullet riddled past, is home to several great little restaurants, including the world-famous Big Nose Kate’s Saloon. Lunch is on self at the restaurant of your choice and afterwards we’ll take a little time to stroll the very same blood-soaked street as Wild Bill Hickok, Doc Holliday, Johnny Ringo, and Wyatt Earp—just to name a few! Later we’ll jump back in the Transits headed for Bisbee. Founded in 1880, driven by a booming mining industry, Bisbee became a thriving community nearly overnight. Now a living ghost town, Bisbee is home to interesting shops and galleries, terrific restaurants, and neighborhoods full of artfully restored Victorian and Europeanstyle homes. We’ll spend some time exploring the downtown area and the Brewery Gulch District, before visiting some of Bisbee’s most notable sites, including St. Patrick’s Catholic Church—a magnificent monument to Bisbee’s early residents who wanted to transform a mining camp into one of the largest commercial centers in Arizona. Located 90 miles southeast of Tucson in the Mule Mountains, Bisbee draws visitors from around the world. Come with us!

Kick off your holiday season with the Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade! Over the years this muchloved holiday tradition has drawn over a 100,000 people to the downtown region to enjoy the parade’s signature razzle-dazzle floats, gigantic Macy’s Paradestyle balloons, marching bands, performing groups, Santa & Mrs. Claus, and so much more! A mega-watt event, the Festival of Lights Parade lends a festive glow to the entire weekend! We’ll be headquartered in the luxurious Hyatt on Palm Canyon Drive, for two nights—conveniently located along the parade route—in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. Some of the highlights of this Festival Weekend Stay include a narrated tour of “Hollywood’s Playground” offered by step-on guides from Palm Springs Celebrity Tours, along with a breathtaking exploration of the cliffs of Chino Canyon on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway—the world’s largest rotating tram car. For more information about this tour, and a complete listing of all that Kindred Tours has to offer, call the office to receive a free subscription to the monthly newsletter. Meet the Slick Chicks

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

Two months ago, our Connect with The Colonnade article featured the ‘Stud Farm’, an all-men’s group in the Colonnade with a promise to also feature the ‘Slick Chicks’, an all women group. With a one-month delay, here is that feature.

The Slick Chicks started in 2016 as a very small group with about six women in attendance.

The Slick Chicks started in 2016 as a very small group with about six women in attendance. “We wanted to ‘push back’ against the Stud Farm” said Vicki Dillon who along with her husband Pat have lived in The Colonnade for seven years. Vicki said “The Stud Farm group was meeting almost every day in the wee hours of the morning. We ladies felt we wanted our own group for the females in The Colonnade.” Vicki added, “We also realized that meeting every day or even once a week was way too much for us, because we didn’t have that much to share, even though we do tend to talk a lot. We all decided to meet once a month.” Just after the group started there was a heated national presidential election going on, which is when Vicki took over as the group leader of the “Slick Chicks.” “I was not the originator of the group, but I took over the leadership role about five and a half years ago,” she said. “It 44

soon became obvious that we needed to set some ground rules - no discussion about politics or religion is allowed. And we try to stick to these guidelines.” The group is open to any woman living in The Colonnade, a Life Plan community in Sun City Grand. “Our mission statement might be – ‘We have no planned agenda, but the main purpose of our group is to get to know one another and especially new female residents, and give them helpful hints regarding The Colonnade,” Vicki said. The group now averages about 25-plus participants every month. It really started growing in August 2020 when the group was able to start getting together again after the first few months of the pandemic. It was a great opportunity for everyone to get out of their homes and socialize. The group has changed very few things since the start. Vicki said, “When we first started, everyone was talking at the same time. The ladies really

wanted to hear what a person was saying, so, I introduced a frog-shaped bean bag. I told our group if you wanted to speak you had to raise your hand and wait until the current speaker would throw the bean bag to the next lady. If you did not have possession of the bean bag you could not talk. This worked beautifully and it was lots of fun.” More recently, the group started using microphones set up on various tables and attendees can raise their hand if they want to talk. And, new members are warmly greeted. “I get really excited when someone new attends,” Vicki said. “We had one resident who had lived at The Colonnade for many years and never attended. When she came for the first time, I made a big deal about it. I ask all new attendees to stand up and say their name, and where she lived prior to moving to The Colonnade. Where does she live now, in a casita or one of the villas?” Participants also share their interests and how long they have lived in the community. “We want to know about them as a person & what their interest are, not about how many kids, grandkids, or dogs, they have.” While the group boasts no agenda, sometimes there are planned programs. At one meeting, the Slick Chicks watched a PBS video about how to buy quality vitamins

that are made only in the United States. This month, Cathy McKeown, a resident from Assisted Living, will share info about a brandnew hearing aid that is installed into your ear and worn 24/7. According to Vicki, “we can always depend on Cleo Ness to share a hilarious life story.” “It’s important to note that everyone from the community is invited and included, whether you live in Independent Living or Assisted Living,” Vicki said. “Rabbi Mindie Snyder, from Sun Health Spiritual Life, provides the monthly treats and water bottles for the group.” And, while they don’t celebrate birthdays or anniversaries at the meetings, the August meeting was a surprise birthday party for Vicki, as shown in the photo above. It was organized by one of the residents in the group and Rabbi Mindie. According to Vicki “Rabbi Mindie brought in really fancy cupcakes for everyone. We have a lot of residents who have lived at The Colonnade for quite a few years, and a bunch who recently moved in who attend each month. Some are single and some are married, and everyone sits together. It’s a camaraderie and it’s fun. If it wasn’t fun, they wouldn’t continue to come. It is exciting to see how the group continues to grow in size.” For more information about The Colonnade and the unique social opportunities available for our residents, please visit SunHealthCommunities.org and click on The Colonnade or call us at (623) 236-3770. We are open for business and welcome you back to The Bistro to enjoy some of that great food. While we are open, we are still following health and safety guidelines on our campus for everyone’s safety.

When the US Army ordered troops into Arizona Territory in the 19th century to protect and defend newly established settlements, military men often brought their wives and families, particularly officers who might be stationed in the west for years. Most of the women were from refined, eastern-bred families with little knowledge of the territory. Their letters, diaries, and journals from their years on army posts reveal untold hardships and challenges. They learned to cope with the sparseness, the heat, sickness, and danger, including wildlife they never imagined. These women were bold, brave, and compassionate. They became an integral part of military posts that peppered the West and played an important role in civilizing the untamed frontier. Combined with research tracing their movements from post to post, their personal stories personify the tragedies and triumphs many early military wives endured.

Although the majority of European Jews were murdered during the Holocaust, some did survive and many immigrated to the United States soon after the war's end. I am the son of two of those survivors. As their lives were greatly altered by what each of them experienced, growing up as the son of survivors had a profound impact on my life. I will talk about events in Germany that led up to the Holocaust, the horrors my parents witnessed and end my presentation on how their parenting styles influenced me as I grew to adulthood and who I am now. Questions will be welcomed at any time during my presentation. 51

BOCCE

Bocce ball was developed into its present form in Italy, and is now played around the world. It has become very popular in the United States. The game largely depends on throwing skills, but because the balls and the pallino are delivered underhand, it is not as physically taxing as some other sports, such as pickleball. The Sun City Grand bocce club plays on the courts near the Adobe pools, and equipment is stored in the closets near the restrooms. We are currently playing Drop-In bocce on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. and on Wednesday evenings starting at 7 p.m. We’ll show you how to play if you’re new at it. No fees or registration are required. Come out and try it out. The SCG bocce club league play will start in October and November. For more information, contact president@scgbocce.com or our website www.scgbocce.com.

BOOMERS CLUB

Sun City Grand Boomers is a 500 + member social club open to all Sun City Grand residents. Membership in Boomers is an excellent way for new residents to establish contacts in the SCG Community. In October, we held a happy hour at the Pavilion with a DJ and 140 attendees. We also held the always popular Chili Cook off with great food and prizes for the winning cooks. In November, we will be holding our annual Welcome Back Dance in honor of our snowbird members. Check us out at www.scgboomers.com That is where you can sign up for membership and see new events as our members schedule them. We always look forward to meeting new "Boomers." If you have membership questions, you can always contact our Membership Chair at membershipscgboomers@ gmail.com

TABLE TENNIS CLUB

Table tennis can maintain and improve our coordination among eyes, hands, and feet; and can help us practice our concentration and reflex year round irrespective of the weather. An example of these is as shown in the video of 2020 International Table Tennis Federation’s World Cup Highlights, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s426FUF725Y. Toward the end of the year, players can join the club in October, November and December to enjoy the memberships for the remaining year and next full year for $15.00 only. We meet in the Gila Room of the Cimarron Center every Monday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday. Please visit www.suncitygrand.com/tabletennis for details.

Why are Bill Gates & Warren Buffet the world’s wealthiest persons? Do you think that playing table tennis has something to do with it? November 17, 2021 DEMOCRATIC INTEREST GROUP In-person meeting Speaker: Ricardo Serna Ricardo Serna experienced poverty and gang violence firsthand as he was raised on Chicago’s South Side. In 2016, he found a passion for community organizing and moved to Phoenix. Upon his arrival, he went directly to the UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers) office in downtown Phoenix to begin work electing Democrats countywide. He worked for the campaigns of Adrian Fontes and Paul Penzone. Now as the President of the Maricopa County Young Democrats, Ricardo is motivated to provide young people and professionals with opportunities early, giving purpose to teens who may be directionless, like he once was. The purpose of Maricopa County Young Democrats (MCYD) is to educate and advocate a better electorate within the next generation of Democratic, left-leaning and/or progressives. Speaker: Kaylan Fodor Kaylan Fodor is the Regional Political Organizer for Healthcare Rising Arizona, a statewide healthcare advocacy organization devoted to making healthcare more affordable and accessible in Arizona. Kaylan is representing the Predatory Debt Collection Protection Act which is a citizens' initiative that aims to protect Arizona consumers from aggressive debt collection practices by increasing existing protections for peoples' homes, vehicles, household goods, bank account, and paychecks. This act would also limit the interest rate debt collectors can charge on medical debt, ensuring that more Arizona families are protected from these predatory practices when facing medical emergencies. SOUND & LIGHTING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS”

The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s

entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. For more information, contact Larry Dirksen – 623363-5040 (Sound); or Bob Nix – 623-214-8280 (Lighting)

WEEDS

Friendly Reminder From Standards

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders. 70

WOMEN4WOMEN

The number of homeless and lowincome women increases each year in our community. Many require the use of feminine hygiene products each month, the cost of which is not covered by SNAP (food stamps) and are too expensive for many to afford. Women4Women believes these items should be available to those who need them; helping homeless and low-income women maintain their dignity, selfrespect, and health. Twenty women from a local chapter of Women4Women came

together to help package feminine hygiene products at WHAM on September 13. In one hour, the team put together over 100 bags! These items are distributed through Surprise Resource Center, the Surprise Police Department and Crisis Support teams.
