rou0ne into their golf schedule. A casual fitness rou0ne or warmup rou0ne can help alleviate backpain, increase clubhead speed, and improve flexibility without a whole lot of effort or 0me. With just 20-30 minutes three 0mes a week, golfers have been able to improve injury preven0on, gain control over their swing, and reduce fa0gue on the golf course. For anyone interested in adding fitness to their rou0ne we would recommend that you start slowly and pick a rou0ne that fits your abili0es. The most important part is to make sure you can commit to improving your health and your golf game.
The Benefits of Adding Fitness to Your Golf Schedule
Grand Golf & Grand Fitness have recently partnered with GolfForever, which you may have seen on Full Swing with Jus0n Thomas & ScoOe Scheffler. With this partnership we have added a warmup sta0on in the Cimarron Fitness Center as well as swing trainers available for sale in all our golf shops. This program is easy to follow and does not require a lot of 0me. If you purchase a swing trainer from our golf shops you will also have access to a complimentary trial experience of their app which includes swing training rou0nes, warmup rou0nes, and strength/speed rou0nes. With the popularity of the Netflix show Full Swing, many golfers saw a glimpse of what tour players do to keep their bodies optimal for their game. While some of us may think that fitness would only benefit the top players in the world, there are plenty of advantages for amateurs to incorporate a fitness routine into their golf schedule. A casual fitness routine or warmup routine can help alleviate backpain, increase clubhead speed, and improve flexibility without a whole lot of effort or time. With just 20-30 minutes three times a week, golfers have been able to improve injury prevention, gain control over their swing, and reduce fatigue on the golf course. Rotational Training Is Not Just For Athletes, But For All Of Us!
The ability to rotate the body is basic to human movement. Whether twisting your torso to the left or right, walking, running, or just raising your arms, rotation is involved. There are no straight lines in the human body. And, since all our bones move with varying degrees of rotation, it makes sense to train your body to achieve that freedom that comes from movement. Training in all directions does precisely that.
With the introduction of the GolfForever warm-up equipment that has been instal led in the Cimarron gym, trainer Charles Crevequer has written an article presenting more information on rotational training, the biomechanics and it s benefits. Members are free to use the GolfForever unit when ever they like. We’ll be offering free orientations in the near future and opportunities to work with specif ic personal trainers and golf pros are available as well. For more information email: grandfitness@livegrandaz.com.
This type of training is designed to coordinate, strengthen, and balance the body while instilling ways to move smarter and smoother on a daily basis. For athletes
engaged in rotational sports like golf, pickleball, tennis, softball, ping pong, etc., training programs are targeted towards the unique demands of each sport with greater efficiency, athleticism, and injury prevention. Combining the body’s rotational movements with specialized equipment like our new GolfForever swing trainer, an RMT Club, or an RMT rope will train those integrated movement patterns, increase your skill level, and enhance your performance.
When I design any training program (whether general or specific) I focus on exercises that closely relate to sports and the activities of everyday life. Training this way prepares your body to perform movements more easily as well as to increase power and decrease injury risk.
Any movement of the body incorporates continuous circular/spiraling movement patterns, promoting communication and connection between the muscles, tendons, connective tissues (fascia) and the joints within your body. Imagine a wheel, the outside of which spins much faster than the center, but yet is fully connected. In order to maximize your athletic ability, you must integrate your core with the rest of your body in a similar fashion.
FROM THE FITNESS DIRECTOR
12 Grand Lifestyles | September 2023 | livegrandaz.com
There should be no blockages in transferring energy through your body.
The better integrated your body becomes, the more effectively you can generate and transfer total body power through the core to your entire body. A strong core, coupled with good posture, means you are better able to maintain the balance in your Center of Gravity and to produce more powerful movements. Rotational training ties everything together and reduces physical stress caused by poor movement.
A bit of anatomy here:
Bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia are strengthened and coordinated by balancing both tensioned and compressed components. Our bones provide compression in the body because they are all solid and a fixed length and thickness. Many of these bones rely on joints to move, so they can't keep the skeleton upright (it has to be hung on a support to stay upright). Now what prevents our skeletons from collapsing into a bag of bones are precisely tensioned muscles, tendons, and ligaments that hold them in place. Here's another fact about motion: movement of any part of the skeleton affects ALL other parts; If I injure my foot, the rest of my body will compensate. Referred pain is a term familiar to many of us.
So how does this actually occur? Through our fascia. Fascia are neuromuscular coverings that surround every organ and structure in our body. This is how movement is activated throughout the body. If our bodies are the hardware, the fascia is the software. The colored lines below roughly equate to the myriad of fascial lines in the body.
Some takeaways from this article: Rotational Movements are either Stationary or Non-Stationary Stationary Hitting, Swinging
These movements primarily rely on proper timing of weight shift from trail side to lead side, and require lateral stability of momentum. Non-Stationary—Pitching, Serving Using the same ideas as stationary movement, these also require stabilization of large vertical forces so that energy is not leaked. Creating torque at the pelvis/core is key. Starting any rotary motion begins in the lower body, transferring energy from the ground up. Thus lower body mechanics dictate speed and power. Lack of this “pelvic torque” is just be like spinning on ice, with little or no power.
Vertical Force/Gravity + Horizontal Force/ Momentum + Coiled System + Body Rotation + Stabilization = Torque
Single leg stability is crucial. Great rotary athletes will start a lateral shift of weight before the hips start to turn. Hip rotation and weight shift stops during the impact/release. This is all determined by one's ability to sequence.
Sequences
Hips
Shoulders
Arm
Hand or Racket/Club/Stick/Bat
Every athlete must “peak” in this sequence and gain speed at each stage. Maximum speed is always achieved during the last sequence. It doesn’t matter what rotary sport you play, it ALWAYS happen in this way.

2024 Budget Meeting
Summer is winding down. It is time for Staff and the Board of Directors to begin the process of planning, developing, debating, and coming to consensus for an annual budget for the upcoming year.
The first duty of the Board of Directors as stated within our Bylaws is “Adopting annual budgets which establish each Owner’s share of the Common Expenses and Neighborhood Expenses, if any.” As Treasurer, it is my responsibility to ensure CAM preparation and Board approval of the budget is completed on or before November 30, so Members may be notified of the amount of the next Annual Base Assessment which is effective July of next year.
This process may take an entire meeting to gain alignment. The following session for each committee is then invested in what proposed changes in revenue are needed to support those agreed upon expenses.
BOB AIKEN Treasurer
The first step in the process which was the reforecasting of this year’s plan was completed in July, allowing Staff to begin the development of a preliminary operating budget for next year early in August. Each department Director has provided our General Manager their needs and the estimated costs supporting their department. This “Bottoms Up” process is essential in establishing accountability by each department, and a vast improvement over past practices of “Top Down” budget creation.
The Budget Meeting Schedule is shown on the opposite page. The preliminary budget is due to the Board members, and members of the Golf Advisory Committee (GAC) and the Finance Advisory Committee (FAC) the week of September 11th. This provides ample time for each participating committee member to review and prepare questions and or challenges to the recommended expense and revenue projections.
Notice that each committee and the Board first review estimated expenses for each department.
While the Board of Directors has the final say within this process, it relies heavily on the GAC and the FAC to provide specific questions at each meeting. This gives the Board a better understanding of the needs that should be supported in the upcoming year.
All meetings are open meetings, or “hybrid”, available to residents to attend in person or by Zoom. Questions from non-committee members will be limited to the end of each session. Video recordings of each meeting will be available on our website for those unable to attend. Each video will be available for viewing until the Board approves the budget for 2024. Right now, Board approval is scheduled to occur at the Board Meeting of October 26th (or November 9th if necessary).
I want to thank in advance the time and effort invested by staff, advisory committee members, and my fellow board members. I know first hand of the time it takes to make this process result in the correct level of investment to keep Grand as one of the best investments for all current and future home owners.

MARTINEZ ON PATROL
By Shawn Tennant Resident of The Grand
AN INTRODUCTION
Have you met Brandon Martinez? With seven years of experience in the Grand Association Patrol, Mr. Martinez has been in charge of the Department since December 2021 and is highly visible throughout the community in person as well as through his email blasts “Martinez on Patrol” in the Grand News of the Day. With over 20 years of experience in the security field, he is highly qualified to lead and move the Grand forward with initiatives to pro-actively mitigate crime in our community, starting with the first phase of security analysis.
To conduct the security analysis, Mr. Martinez will be utilizing his training and certification in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to evaluate opportunities in the Grand to remove criminal opportunities in order to reduce potential crime. CPTED is a national security certification that is based in training on environmental principles focused on safety through design and is the same training utilized by Police Departments throughout the Valley of the Sun. Through his CPTED experience, Mr. Martinez will focus on proven strategies to develop opportunities to mitigate potential crime in the Grand such as limiting vulnerable places, enhanced natural surveillance, as well as landscape and building maintenance. Specifically, analysis of existing landscaping and a recommendation for the “Two Foot, Six Foot Rule” will help eliminate areas of concealment by trimming any bushes on the ground in common areas to no more than two feet in height and trimming tree canopies to at least six feet or higher to allow better visibility. As part of the security analysis, common area lighting and signage will also be assessed. Since only 65% of crime is reported nationally, every community crime mitigation strategy also depends upon individual and community ownership of outcomes, commonly referred to as the “See Something, Say Something” strategy.
THE ANALYSIS
As the analysis progresses, Mr. Martinez will share information on progress with the community through his email blasts and reports to the Board. Once the analysis is complete, Mr. Martinez will present his findings and recommendations to the Board for consideration.

We Want and Need You For C.H.A.P.S. Volunteer Service
We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. Because we have received so much positive feedback, and one additional snake spotting, we decided to inform our neighbors once again regarding the value of keeping our garage doors closed at all times.
DBACKS SPOTTED IN THE GRAND
In the last two months there have been 3 separate rattlesnakes (diamondbacks) in one neighborhood. One of the homeowners had Rattlesnake Solutions inspect her yard for nests after her dog was bitten. One of our C.H.A.P.S.* members helped pull a rattlesnake out of another neighbor's garage on
two occasions this spring. Nick from Rattlesnake Solutions explained to our C.H.A.P.S.* member that a rattlesnake bite can easily cost $40,000 to deal with and in this area garage doors should be sealed properly and never be left open. Rattlesnakes are always looking for a nice cave and an open garage door appears to be a nice attractive cave. Please fully close your garage doors and keep the snakes outside.
The summer heat is here!! We will be seeing more people out walking at night. (Please close your garage door when out for an evening stroll.) We recommend you wear light colored clothing, and even use reflective clothing if possible. When crossing in one of the crosswalks it is virtually impossible to see walkers wearing dark clothing until it is almost too late.

*C.H.A.P.S.:
Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service.
Everyone is welcome. Make a difference with C.H.A.P.S.
The duties of C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers appear below.
VACATION WATCH
When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center, as well as online at livegrandaz.com. Completed forms are to be returned
to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. Two criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the request form. C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S.* does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.
EVENING PATROL
During evening hours, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. The volunteers look for breaches of security such as open garage doors, suspicious vehicles and/or people. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities. As an additional reminder: when going out for an evening walk please close your garage door. If one of our C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers stop to let you know of your open garage door and finds no response to the ringing of your doorbell we are obligated to notify the Surprise Police Department to perform a courtesy stop at your home that evening.
TO VOLUNTEER
We are actively looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There are two-person patrols where you select your days/ evenings to volunteer, and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer. Call the C.H.A.P.S.* office (623) 546-7553 if you may be interested in joining us.
GENERAL MEETINGS
Leaving your garage doors open: As previously mentioned rattlesnakes have been found in at least two garages in the past month. Please check daily to see if your garage door is closed. And, contrary to the belief that it helps to leave your door open a bit (18 inches) to let the heat escape that does not work! When it is 100 degrees inside your garage and 106 outside it will only allow
more heat to enter your garage. And, if you are leaving the door open 18 inches you are simply inviting someone or something to crawl into your garage. When your doorbell rings in the evening it is likely one of our C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers with a friendly reminder that your garage door is open, and we also stop when the door is slightly open.
We meet the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm at Sonoran Plaza. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, July 25. We welcome you to come to one of our meetings to learn more about C.H.A.P.S.*
DONATIONS
C.H.A.P.S.* welcomes all donations. Those wishing to make donations may do so at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and designate “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.”

THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY SUNDAY DRAMA & COMEDY
CLUB NIGHT WATCH
By Lucille Fletcher
The Grand Drama & Comedy Club opens its new 2023-2024 season with a thriller written by Lucille Fletcher entitled Night Watch. This production will keep you on the edge of your seat, as the Drama & Comedy Club presents its patrons with an American mystery melodrama.
Synopsis: Unable to sleep, Elaine Wheeler paces the living room of her Manhattan townhouse, troubled by unsettling memories and vague fears. Her husband tries to comfort her, but when he steps away for a moment, Elaine screams as she sees (or believes she sees) the body of a dead man in the window across the way. The police are called but find nothing except an empty chair. Elaine’s terror grows as shortly thereafter she sees still another body—this time a woman’s—but by now the police are skeptical and pay no heed to her frantic pleas. Her husband, claiming that Elaine may be on the verge of a breakdown, calls a psychiatrist, who agrees with his suggestion that Elaine should commit herself to a sanitarium for treatment. From this point on, the plot moves quickly and grippingly as those involved—Elaine’s old friend and house guest, Blanche; the inquisitive and rather sinister man who lives next door; and the nosy maid, Helga—all contribute to the deepening suspense and mystery of the play as it draws towards its riveting and chilling climax.
This ingeniously devised thriller builds steadily in menace and suspense until the final, breath-stopping moment of
its unexpected “twist” ending. Director Michael Hood; Producer Kathy Marker; Stage Manager Leanne Evans.

In the early ’70s, rock music mellowed creating the distinctive, laid-back sound of soft rock. The smooth and easy feeling this music inspires is perfect for life’s most meaningful moments. In Loving Memory ALAN
MEYER
July 31, 1944—August 16, 2023
Board Member
It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of our fellow Board Member, Alan Meyer. This is a deep loss for his family and our community. Our hearts and prayers are with Debbie, his wife of many years, and their family.
Alan represents what makes Grand special. He volunteered his time and talents to serve the greater community. He and Debbie were a team dedicated to not only their family life, but to the welfare of the community. Alan participated on various committees over the years. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 2019, serving two years as Vice President.
In the fall of 2021, he was appointed to the Board and served as Treasurer. Alan was reelected to Board in 2022 and served as Treasurer, liaison to the Golf Advisory committee and Deaf Access committee.
Sometimes it is hard to know the impact one has on the lives of others. I wanted to share thoughts from past Presidents of the Board who served with Alan.
Alan understood the meaning of ‘service before self’, a commitment to others without self-promotion. I will miss his sense of humor and respect he showed others without self-promotion.
Alan, as my Vice President, was a kind and gentle soul. Alan had significant talent and knowledge and a sincere desire to give so much to our neighbors. He worked hard and always contributed with grace and a keen sense of humor.
He was an invaluable leader and confidant. There are so many words to describe Alan but if I had to choose only one, it would be he was a ‘Gentleman’ in all good of senses of that word.
On behalf of the Board, we will miss Alan and his contributions. The best way to honor Alan’s memory is to serve our community honorably, respectfully and service before self.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Debbie and his family. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.surprisefuneralcare.com for the Meyer family.

In May of 2019, the Grand Board of Directors approved the Long Range Planning Committee proposal to seek an external food and beverage partner to operate the entire foodservice program that was beneficial to both parties. In September 2020, Grand entered into a 10-year foodservice agreement with Unidine, a Compass Group company. The plan was to create a comprehensive, coordinated food and beverage service starting with The Grand Café, Snack Bars and catering.
Changing Grand's Food and Beverage Strategy
By the second year of the agreement, the goal to achieve a successful partnership with Unidine was in question. It became apparent that the partnership was struggling for many reasons: resident feedback was unfavorable, the subsidies were high, and there was no profit to share. After months of negotiation, the Board amended the Unidine agreement in February 2023. The amendment changed the provider from Unidine to Compass Community Living (DBA Compass Hospitality), removing the trigger points before profit sharing began and updated the key performance indicators (KPIs).
This past March, Compass Hospitality opened and managed The Falls Restaurant until the fire in April.
The Food and Beverage Advisory Committee and staff continued to work with Compass to address concerns regarding customer satisfaction, financial results and KPIs. However, the partnership with Compass was not working. It placed a drain on our resources – both human and capital. We received many emails in addition to comments at the Board meetings, workshops, and Ask Us submissions on how dissatisfied our residents were with Compass.
A Special Board Meeting was held on August 8th where the Board voted and approved terminating the agreement with Compass. The agreement requires Grand to give Compass a 60 day notice. Starting in early October, Compass will no longer provide foodservice for the Snack Barr, The Grand Café and catering.
Moving forward, our management team is ramping up to manage the Grand Café and Snack Bars. We are confident that our staff will provide a customerfocused food and beverage service that will delight our residents. Regarding The Fall Restaurant, we are pursuing a new proprietor. We believe The Falls deserves the best partner for the upcoming rebuild, and must prioritize that goal moving forward. There is much to do in the next 60 days. You can follow our progress through the News of the Day, website postings and at Board meetings.

WHO WILL RUN THE SNACK BARS AND THE GRAND CAFÉ?
Once Compass leaves in early October, our CAM staff will take over. There will be about a 10–14-day period when the café may be closed to set up, organize and to train staff. We will work hard to take advantage of the overseeding schedule to minimize any closures with the snack bars.
In the past, The Grand’s Director of Golf and his team oversaw the operation of the Snack Bars and The Grand Café. Overall, this worked out extremely well because there was a lot of teamwork that was involved. We anticipate the
As many of you have heard already, the Board voted to terminate the agreement with Compass at their special meeting on August 8th. There are still many questions and concerns from residents. Below are some Q&A’s that have been put together to try and help answer some of your questions. Over the next several weeks, the CAM Team will be busy getting ready for the transition. I am extremely proud of how all the various departments of CAM are coming together to make this a success.
same level of collaboration to resume moving forward. The Director of Golf Operations, Brandon Dougherty, has extensive Food and Beverage experience and is anxious to share his expertise, skillset, passion, and knowledge for these operations. He already has his Arizona Food Manager Certification and has also already gone through the Title 4 Management training in accordance with Arizona liquor laws. In anticipation of future food and beverage needs, all food service licenses are in our name. Brandon understands the needs and desires of our golfers and how to manage a snack bar with all the
various events, shotguns, and tee times that occur. We will be better managed to provide better customer service for peak times because we understand the business and are experts in the industry.
WHO WILL RUN THE FALLS?
Under the leadership of General Manager, Jeff Hochman, staff has been actively searching and engaging with independent restauranteurs interested in running The Falls. There is still a lot of vetting necessary, but we are making good progress. At this point it is too early to say when a new restauranteur will be selected. We can assure you that we are looking

for a food service provider to meet the needs of the majority of our residents. We gathered a lot of information during the recent opening of The Falls, and we are taking all the feedback into consideration when selecting a new restauranteur. The contract with the proprietor will reflect what is typical in the industry and not resemble the Compass contract’s profit/ loss sharing.
WHO WILL RUN CATERING?
The Grand has a great list of preferred caterers that have done a terrific job for our clubs, interest groups and special functions and they love providing those services. Staff will continue to have these vendors provide a service for functions and, like in the past when staff ran the café, we will only provide catering services if it is in our scope of service and makes sense to do so.
If your event is booked with Compass beyond 60 days, please contact the Activities Department and they will happily assist in providing other catering options that will ensure your event is a success.
WHO WILL RUN THE BAR SERVICES?
The Activities Department will manage the bar service. Please continue to use the same forms as required in the past. The pricing for bar services is under review.
WILL THE ACTIVITIES AND GOLF DIRECTORS WORK TOGETHER ON VILLAGE CENTER EVENTS?
Activities Director, Lorena Nieto is still heavily involved with planning the events with Compass and with her expertise and knowledge of what our residents want, she will work closely with Brandon to continue to offer
spectacular events with great food options and service.
GRAND CAFÉ & SNACK BAR MENU & PRICING
These items are still being developed/ priced. We will start off small until we can get staff comfortable and understand limitations. Our pricing goal is to work within industry standard food and beverage margins while giving excellent value. Historically the snack bars and The Grand Café are an amenity for our residents and every effort will be made to keep losses at a minimum.
WHEN IS THE FALLS GOING TO OPEN?
The previous GM, Rod Rankin, is working closely on the rebuilding of The Falls restaurant. He is coordinating with the contractors, our insurance company, and ensuring everything is returned to its original condition. The Falls is expected to have substantial completion done by November. Weekly updates via News of the Day will keep residents informed.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE COMPASS STAFF?
Our goal is to keep qualified and enthusiastic employees. All Compass employees will go through a re-application and interview process. We will rehire those with the passion for food and beverage that meet our needs. We want to build a team that is welcoming and those who go the extra mile, when possible, while delivering great customer service with a smile.
DOES THIS IMPACT ANGELA’S?
This has no impact on that facility. Angela’s operates under a separate contract.
HOW DOES THIS IMPACT THE RESIDENTS?
The residents are the reason why your Board of Directors and staff work tirelessly. We want every resident to understand our…

8:30 AM–10:30 AM FEE: $30
Let's meet weekly to discuss the current events of the day. Be prepared to actively participate as we debate the pros and cons of the topics selected by the group. At the beginning of each session, I will poll the group for topics. COLONIAL AMERICA: 1607-1791 ON ZOOM
BONNIE SAUNDERS
Meets 8 times on Tu 10/3/2023–11/21/2023
3:00 PM–4:30 PM FEE: $25
How were the colonies similar and how were they different? We currently have controversies about the "1619 Project," which deals with the beginning of slavery in Virginia. Also happening that year in that colony was the first election for representatives to govern a colony. So our best aspect, democracy, and our worst aspect, slavery, began the same year in the same place. How did both democracy and slavery impact the colonies, the American Revolution, and the Constitution? Join us on Zoom–listen, think, ask questions, discuss! The Zoom link will be sent to your email address on file with Grand Learning. Please check SPAM folder and call Grand Learning if you don't receive the link within 24 hours of class.

We will also consider how these facts impact your understanding of the writings. But mostly be ready to learn what the Old Testament says and to have certain key handles pointed out to you which help you grasp the content in your own study time. Undoubtedly, we will brush into issues of doctrine, but more commonly will explore what the literature says.

I will explain the process of Nidra, take you through a guided meditation (Nidra), and follow by playing the Gong. NOTE: Participants must bring a mat or blanket, and anything else that would make you comfortable (pillow, bolster, etc), as this entire process is done lying on the floor. BLOOD AND THUNDER
DR. RUTH CALLAHAN
Meets 1 time on Mo 11/6/2023
11:00 AM–12:30 PM FEE: $15
Today’s selection is a short story for grownups :) “Blood” is by Isaac Bashevis Singer, who won the Noble Prize for Literature in 1978, and readers may recognize Singer as the author of the novella Yentl, which Barbara Streisand made into a movie. Singer’s fiction, depicting Jewish life in Poland and the US, is filled with wit, wisdom, irony and the grotesque. Ted Hughes, writing in The New York Book Review, states: “His stories often turn on almost occult insights — as in the connection between blood lust and sexual lust, in ‘Blood.’" Good Heavens! Could it be possible, though, to understand Risha, the main figure in “Blood,” not only as a madly passionate woman but in a different way altogether? The French philosopher Jean Paul Sartre has a rather unusual definition of a hero, including a requirement for never being satisfied, and more information on this idea
will be offered during class. After discussing the story in general, let’s have some fun with our question: “Given Sartre’s ideas, does Risha, of Singer's short story "Blood," meet this definition of a hero?”
Copies of the story are available at the Grand Learning office or if you choose to buy your own copy, Amazon offers a Kindle version, a hardback and paperback of Yentl the Yeshiva Boy and Other Stories from around $12.00. The original book in which “Blood” was published — Short Friday — is available from Alibris, for example, from as little as $2.50. It is online (but CANNOT be downloaded) in the internet Archive for free at https://archive. org/details/shortfriday0000isaa
WESTERN CIVILIZATION: THE EUROPEAN RENAISSANCE: 1300 TO 1550 CE
SALVATORE DILIBERTO
Meets 4 times on Tu 11/7/2023–12/5/2023
9:00 AM–12:00 PM
FEE: $25
During the last century of the European Middle Ages, a new vision in the arts, in cultural life, and intellectual pursuit, began to appear in southern Europe. Here in the Italian City States of Florence, Milan, Naples, Rome, and Venice, a revival of the knowledge of the classical cultures of Greece and Rome, would take place.
The term Renaissance, derived from the French word rebirth, would describe the period that would re-capture the glory of the classical past long-lost during the darkness of the Middle Ages. Unlike the Middle Ages, sometimes called the Age of Faith, a secular attitude emerged which was exhibited in the arts, education, family life, literature, politics, and wealth.
In this chapter of Western Civilization, we’ll look at some of the key individuals as they relate to the above. They include: Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, in the arts. Bocaccio, Castiglione, Machiavelli, Petrarch in literature. The families of the Medici of Florence, the Sforza in Milan, and the Borgias of Rome represent politics and wealth.
Our study will conclude with the spread of the Renaissance as it moved into Northern Europe. Unlike the secular attitude of the Italian Renaissance, in the north the religious element remained strong. It was in the north that the roots of the Protestant Reformation took hold. The Northern Renaissance benefited from the invention of the printing press which allowed for rapid dissemination of the new knowledge. In the north, the economic and political structure was determined by powerful monarchs who controlled vast amounts of land. The Age of Exploration would see its beginnings during the age of the Northern Renaissance. Ultimately, the movement in the north became a blend of the old and the new.
In addition to lectures, course readings, and

9:00 AM–11:00 AM FEE: $25 Artists depict the values of the culture they live in. When many artists depict the same values, having the same characteristics in their art, it is called an art style. In the United States from the 1930’s to the 1940’s there was not a unnotified art style. There was a style that represented the cities; Social Realism. There was a style that represented the country; Regionalism. Plus, artists who fit neither of these categories: the Independents. They were all grouped together as The American Scene. We will discuss The American Scene, survey the artists, and in each of these groups and depending upon the time, discuss and view in detail the lives and art of a few of these artists such as Edward Hopper, Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood.

HISTORY OF ARIZONA WATER USE AND FARMING CULTURES
JIM TURNER
Meets 1 time on We 11/15/2023
11:30 AM–1:30 PM FEE: $15
This presentation covers water use and food supply interactions with Arizona’s ecology from Clovis Culture hunter-gatherers to proto-farmers to Hohokam irrigation canals, Hopi and Tohono O’odham dry farming, and present-day American farmers. It examines how overhunting and climate change affected the wooly mammoth populations and the experiments with agriculture that followed. From proto-farmers aiding wild plants to some the earliest irrigation canal projects in North America the Southwest’s indigenous people developed methods to survive the regions’ harsh climate. The Hopi and Tohono O’odham cultures not only altered their physical environment but developed a cultural belief system that espoused frugality and harmony with their natural surroundings.

Meets 1 time on Tu 11/28/2023
1:00 PM–2:30 PM

That this shy, skinny young man with big hair and big dreams would within days perform alongside Eric Clapton’s new band, Cream, was surely anyone’s guess. But Jimi Hendrix was a ticking time bomb. Clapton himself was caught off guard when Hendrix exploded on stage that night. “It scared me, because he was clearly going to be a huge star, and just as we were finding our own speed, here was the real thing,” Clapton recalled in his autobiography, some 40 years later. “Here was a force to be reckoned with.” For his storytelling tributes to the greatest electric guitarists of our time, Johnny Faser scoured library shelves and internet archives, listened to countless interviews, and played a lot of wrong notes on his guitar (so he can bring you the right ones). Like classic rock? You gotta hear him talk!

THE GRAND’S “COMMUNITY THEATER”
The Grand Drama & Comedy Club is the Grand’s Community Theater. We live our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” and welcome everyone to our club recognizing that each person has unique talents and value. Everyone is not an actor, and many members use their talents in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication. Do you like to redecorate? You might be a wonderful set designer. Are you a DIY kind of guy? Or gal? Join the construction crew building sets, or join a “painting party” to turn flats into garden scenes. Smile! Be an usher!
We offer training for our sound crew and our lighting team. Learn a new skill or use your experience in a new way. Please contact Ove Jakobsen at 256-721-0431 or ovejakobsen@msn. com for sound or Bob Nix at 623-214-8280 or bobnix@cox.net for lighting info. They are happy to train interested folks.
We offer dance classes at many levels, sure to fit one of your styles, from beginner to advance tap and jazz. Our Grandettes have been a Grand tradition for 25 years! Please contact Robin Kachurak, Dance Committee Chairperson, at 818-795-4859.
Not interested in learning a lot of lines but always had a desire to be on stage? Our Cabaret Players presents 3 comedy performances a year by actors who use their scripts as part of their performance – no memorization needed. Always a sell out, this venue is small and intimate in the Cimarron Theater.
We offer so many opportunities for making new friends and fun, and all for only $10. For information on all the many ways to participate in the activities, “on stage or back stage”, please visit our webpage: https://www. granddrama.com

SOCIAL GAMES:
Social Games Charter Club is comprised of 5 Special Interest Groups. These interest groups are as follows:
CHESS:
Tucked away in The Grand, three times a week, we play Chess and forget about everything else. It’s true, while playing Chess with us, you think only of Chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees) and calorie-burning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing Chess).
You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer!
So, check us out, Mate. Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding escape. We usually meet in the Agua Fria room (Cimarron) at 11:30 -3:30 Monday and Wednesday and the Sago Room at the Palm Center on Friday. This is subject to change, so call us first at 623-293-2884 for Paula, or 203979-1194 for Marty.
CRIBBAGE:
We play in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center on Tuesdays from 9:00- 11:30 a.m. We start promptly, so please come at least 15 minutes early to sign up and get acquainted. We collect $4 to play, which is awarded back to the winners. You are invited to play three times as our guest. Our dues are $5 per year.
HAND & FOOT
We play every Tuesday at 1:00 in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center and Friday at 6:00 in the Agua
Fria Room at Cimarron. We play two games and draw cards for random partners each game. You will need $4. in quarters and $4 in bills for the two games. If you have your own cards (6 decks) and shuffler, please bring them. We are currently playing “Progressive Hand & Foot”. For a copy of the rules or questions, please contact Joy Kreick at joykreick@gmail.com. Come and play! We’re a friendly group and try our best to be inclusive no matter your skill level.
RUMMIKUB
Welcome to Rummikub, a top, worldwide board game since 1945, played with tiles but similar to gin rummy and canasta, for 2-4 people. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays and 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month for exciting games. We play in the Pima Room, located near The Café at Chaparral Center. From 11AM to 2PM, we engage in the exciting world of Rummikub, practicing skills and strategic thinking. If you don’t know the new joker rules and the basics, call for a FREE lesson. Come join us to meet fellow Rummikub fans to have fun. For info: Barbara Powers: 480-567-2533 or barbs.rum@ gmail.com.
STAMP COLLECTING
We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in the Pima Room in the Chaparral Center. Meetings are always open to anyone interested in collecting postage stamps, whether to learn about stamp collecting, discover the worth of an existing collection or to donate a collection to a non-profit tax exempt foundation. Our friendly group will encourage your interest in stamps, whatever it may be. More info is available from Gene Trinks at 602339-8243 or gctrinks@cox.net.
SOFTBALL
Who wouldn't want to be a kid again? Lasting friendships are formed through a game for kids! We play all year long on the beautiful Del Webb Ballpark on Mountainview just west of Goldwater. Stop by any day and meet some great guys and gals; all of whom are there to have fun and relive their youth. There are four different seasons each year as well as different skill levels for annual and parttime residents. We have special events throughout the year. MOMS LIKE ME SUPPORT GROUP
Moms Like Me is a support group whose goal is to reach out to the hurt and hearts of mothers who have experienced the loss of a child. Every day there are thousands of mothers who have lost a child who are living in the depths of despair, feeling they have lost all hope. Our support group falls under the banner of Umbrella Ministries, a network of mothers throughout the United States who have lost a child, and whose soul mission is to reach out with the Lord’s love, to broken hearted mothers. The ways of losing child can be quite broad, from infants to adult children, miscarriages, to a still born death of a full-term pregnancy. Other mothers have lost a child through suicide, a fatal accident or illness. The death of a child is different than any other loss and only a mother who has experienced that loss can relate to the grief that a mother is feeling. We plan to meet twice a month in The Grand, location to be determined later. If you have any questions, please call or text Nina Montgomery at 623-606-3160.

GRAND REPUBLICANS INTEREST GROUP
Grand Republicans announces its return to Church on the Green, 19051 N. RH Johnson Blvd, Sun City West, effective with its August 19 General Meeting. Please see our website: grandrepublicans.com for directions and other information. While at the website, please read our mission, vision and values statements under the ABOUT tab. Board contact information is under Useful Links. Monthly meetings will continue through the 2024 election.
Grand Republicans’ General Meetings are on the 3rd Saturday morning each month. Doors open at 8:30, coffee and pastries available by 9:00, with meetings starting at 9:30. Guests are always welcome. There is a $2 fee for non-members to help defray the costs of the meeting room, and a tip jar is available to help pay for the pastries and donuts.
At press time we were looking forward to our August 19 meeting, where we will be hearing from Jeff Zink, Congressional candidate for Arizona CD3; and Stephen Skvara and Mary Jane Ziola, candidates for School Governing Board Member for Dysart Unified School District #89. They are running as a team to secure two of the three seats opening up in 2024.
Jeff Zink’s son Ryan has been wrongfully charged with trespassing on federal grounds on January 6, 2021. Ryan is innocent, yet is facing 22 years to life, if convicted. Jeff was also in Washington DC on January 6th, 2021 and saw first-hand what happened that day. While neither went into the Capitol, Ryan was charged with trespassing on federal grounds and buildings, entering the capitol, and crossing a barrier, none of which are true.
On September 16 we look forward to hosting Mr. Tyler Boyer, Chief Operating Officer for Turning Point Action, the 501(c)(4) organization that operates the nationwide youth effort, advocating for conservative politics on high school, college, and university campuses.
Boyer will be joined by the well-known and popular General Michael “Mick” McGuire. General McGuire is a retired Air Force Major General who has lived in Arizona most of his life. On January 8, 2021, he was ordered to send Arizona National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. in response to the 2021 United States Capitol attack. McGuire was the only adjutant general of the 54 state and territory adjutant generals to refuse the order due to concerns about the legality of the mission. He retired three months later.

News and Announcements
CITY OF SURPRISE BOND 2023
Surprise is holding a Special Election on November 7, giving voters the option to authorize the issuance and sale of General Obligation bonds to fund projects in two areas – transportation and public safety.
The ballot will include two questions:
QUESTION 1 asks if residents want to approve bond funding for improvements to segments of Waddell Road, Happy Valley Road, Cactus Road, and 163rd Avenue. The improvements are intended to reduce traffic congestion and reduce overall travel times on these roads and on the city’s overall traffic network.
QUESTION 2 asks if residents want to approve bond funding to construct a fire station, a police substation, and to acquire land for future public safety facilities. Reducing the coverage areas of the city’s current fire stations could result in faster response times, or maintained response times, to emergencies; and improvements to the efficiency of the overall City Public Safety system. The goal of the police substation is to improve coverage and maintain service levels and response times.
Due to significant residential and commercial growth across Surprise, the City expects it can issue additional bond debt without increasing the tax rate. You can get more details on the financials and the projects at surpriseaz.gov/Bond. I hope you will join me in voting on November 7.
NEIGHBORHOOD GRANT PROGRAM
Surprise City Council approved funding to support the Neighborhood Grant Program that provides eligible neighborhoods with small grants to fund neighborhood events, functions or community improvements. Recognizing an opportunity to encourage community engagement and further build strong relationships with communities in Surprise, the City designated $10,000 to support the grant program for FY24.
To be considered, projects must meet the following program criteria:
n Provide a public benefit
n Result in a product, which benefits a
neighborhood or the larger Surprise community
n Be feasible for completion by June 2024
n Involve the benefiting neighborhood in project identification, planning and execution
n Emphasize neighborhood self-help; or be educational, community-building or a public physical improvement
n Nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations are ineligible
Additionally, a minimum of five
neighbors within the residential area must sign the application and support the idea; neighborhoods governed by a homeowner association (HOA) must have HOA approval, if required.
Interested communities should deliver the complete Neighborhood Grant Program application to City Hall, attention Jodi Tas, by 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 30, 2023. For more information about the grant, visit surpriseaz.gov/ngp or contact Jodi Tas at jodi.tas@surpriseaz.gov or 623.222.1330.
