FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS

IT’S TIME TO "SUMMERIZE”

YOUR HOME

General Manager

We are quickly approaching the time of year when a number of our residents leave for a few months or the entire summer. Before you leave, we want to remind you to “summerize” your home so that you can leave with confidence that steps have been taken to protect your home and that your return is not filled with unpleasant surprises. A number of services and procedures will be discussed to proactively address ways to protect your home and property. The Surprise Police Department’s Risk Assessment Program (RAP) is available free to residents of Surprise and it is designed to decrease the likelihood of criminal activity by using principals of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). An on-site visit is required and a survey is conducted to pinpoint specific areas to address; the result being a list of written recommendations for improving the security of the property. Please contact the Surprise Police Department at 623-2224000 or Officer Nate Miller at 623-2224140 or by email at Nathaniel.miller@ surpriseaz.gov for more information. If a resident is away from home for two weeks or more they can complete a Vacation Watch request form with the SCG Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service (C.H.A.P.S.) and return the form to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. Three criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: 1. Homeowner must be away a minimum of two weeks 2. A key holder must be identified on the request form 3. Homes for sale and those using paid house-sitting services are not eligible for this service. A C.H.A.P.S. volunteer will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors,

unlocked or broken windows, etc. When an irregularity is found, the designated key holder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S. members do not enter your home. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the CAM Standards Office. Another option is to enlist the services of a friend or hire a house-sitting service to keep an eye on the exterior of your home by providing visual inspections, remove unwanted papers, etc. from the driveway and monitor the irrigation system to ensure plants are watered and no water leaks exist. Also, an occasional visit on the interior of the home can ensure water is in the toilets and sink traps and that all timed lights are operating properly. If the home has a security system, make sure everything is operating properly before the home is

armed for an extended period of time. The residential Lockbox Program is designed to provide Fire Fighters immediate access to your home in the case of a medical or fire emergency. The lockbox is a 2“ X 4” mini-safe case made of hardened steel and brass. The Fire Department has a universal key to unlock the lockbox and access the master key provided by the resident thereby eliminating the need for a forced entry and major damage to the front door of the house. The resident may also place emergency contact information (business card size) in the lockbox for the Fire Department. The lockbox is available for a fee of $65 (incl. installation) and is installed by Fire personnel a few days after it is purchased. A lockbox

CONVERSATION WITH KEN

The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Conversation with Ken is on April 19, 2017, in the Palm Center.

is available for purchase in person at the City of Surprise Revenue Division, 1600 N. Civic Center Plaza, Surprise, 85374 or visit surpriseaz.gov/fire where a registration form is available from the Fire-Medical Department site. In addition to the services mentioned above, there are many things residents can do to protect their home when they are away for an extended period of time. The following precautions constitute a suggested list from a number of authorities: n Always update your contact information with the Membership Department (623-546-74444) so that someone can be contacted in case of an emergency. n Lock all windows, doors, gates and especially security doors. n Ensure that all landscaping on the property is properly trimmed being careful to eliminate possible hiding places for intruders. n Replace all burned out bulbs for exterior lighting such as entrances, driveways, landscaping and the house number lighting. n Remove any ripened citrus from fruit Grand Lifestyles | April 2017 | grandinfo.com

trees; rodents are attracted to fallen fruit. n Drain water from any backyard water features and eliminate any potential for standing water that can breed mosquitoes which carry diseases, including the West Nile Virus. n Set the irrigation system for the hot summer season and check all lines and valves for leaks that could cause damage and waste water. n Always have someone who is looking after your house; C.H.A.P.S., house sitting service or friends or relatives. Failure to pick up advertising circulars, newspapers, etc. is advertising to intruders that no one is home. n Close all blinds; if light timers are installed in the house crack them open so the light can be seen from the outside. n Empty the refrigerator of anything that would spoil. A full refrigerator uses less energy; turn off the ice maker. If the refrigerator is disconnected prop the door open to let air circulate. n Close all sink drains in the kitchen

and bathrooms to lessen evaporation of water in the plumbing line. n Raise thermostat for summers; 85 – 92F. n Check furnace filters to make sure they are clean; replace or clean as needed. n Close water supply valves on toilets. n Turn water heater off or to pilot setting. n Saran wrap on toilet bowls will greatly reduce evaporation in a toilet. n Shut off main water valve in front or side of house. n Check irrigation and water clock; change backup battery if needed. n Disconnect car or golf car battery. n Place outdoor furniture, barbeque grills, etc. in the garage for safekeeping during your absence. n Unplug the garage door opener or lock the garage door. We hope that this information is helpful as you make preparations for your vacation or extended time away from your home in Sun City Grand. We wish all travelers a safe journey and look forward to seeing you again later in the 2017! 11

I think that this quote speaks volumes for all the behind the scenes work that goes into running a community the size of Grand. The simple statistics alone are impressive – 9802 homes, 17,000 residents, and 4000 acres of property of which 400 acres are common area. Wow! But when you break down the numbers to the everyday activities here, it is nothing short of astounding. We have a population similar to Douglas, Eloy, Payson, and New River. Running Sun City Grand is literally like running a small city. Let’s take a tour …

The Activities Department handles 43

Chartered Clubs, interest groups almost too numerous to track, a pet park, a high quality monthly magazine, a huge community website (44,000 visits a month), a TV station (24/7 programming, 352 days a year), bar service, bus tours/day trips, outside events (Fall Fest, Car Show, Markets, Wine Down Wednesdays, drive in movies, Flea Market, Arts Festival etc.), inside events (club productions, outside entertainment, production series, movies, etc.), rental program (weddings, anniversary parties, lecture series), an in-

12

house education center (Grand Learning which offered 108 classes this semester – did you take one?), committee support, reasonable accommodations, and about 50,000 room bookings a year. I’m tired just typing the list and I know that I didn’t cover everything.

The Fitness Department handles 5 pools (totaling 500,000 gallons of water to be cleaned and tested), 3 spas, an indoor walking track, aerobic studios, 2 fitness centers (Cimarron alone is a 35,000 square foot facility), health lecture series, wellness workshops, fitness Olympics, a 5K run, and a full calendar of class offerings (yoga, Pilates, spin, water aerobics – 90+ classes a week in season). Did you know that the pool staff starts at 3:30 am? That the fitness monitors report to work at 4:30 am? That the pools are climate controlled all year round (yes that means we even COOL the water in the summer)? That in the busy season we have over 60,000 residents swipe in at the fitness centers … per month!? The staff tracks the latest technology in equipment and pool systems, so that we stay on the cutting edge. The Golf Department oversees a staff of

75,800 acres of courses, 47 lakes (covering 56 acres), 25 acres of cart paths, 8000 sprinkler heads, 60,000 plants (trees and shrubs included), 184,000 rounds of play, 200,000 pounds of seed, and a

staggering 800 million gallons of water. Can you believe it? It takes a lot of effort to have these beautiful open spaces! In addition the department runs the Chelsea appointment system, 3 pro shops, clubs, special activities like demo days, Glow in the Dark golf, Pros on the Range, Open House with movie, Golf Fashion Show, golf simulator demos, tournaments and more! Our fleet of maintenance equipment and rental carts keep our in house mechanic quite busy as well. How about food service? Did you know that our Golf Manager also handles the food service for the entire community? That means all the snack shops, special events, and our own Grand Café. Our ice cream sales alone put Dairy Queen to shame – we are known around the Valley for our $1.00 ice cream cones. Special themed dinners, grilling at Wine Down Wednesday, and now poolside service at Adobe for the Month of March. Quite an undertaking. We are looking forward to the “Grand” plans for the Café expansion this year during the Chaparral remodel. You will be impressed with the upgrades in store.

The Facilities Maintenance Department

handles all the buildings, sports courts, ball fields, 8.16 miles of trails, 150 drinking fountains, 85 benches, 78 dog waste cleanup dispensers, 583 maintained homes,107 irrigation clocks, almost Grand Lifestyles | April 2017 | grandinfo.com

250,000 plants and trees (including over 1000 annual flowers changed each season), 283 acres of granite, 108 trash cans, and a trail marker system consisting of 75 markers on the trails and 14 more with GPS locating for Grand facilities with no street address (for emergency response personnel). They maintain a fleet of 31 vehicles, put up 100 American flags 8 times a year along Sunrise, process and complete an average of 333 work orders a month (in season). Recently they have completed some large projects such as the pickleball courts conversion, the exterior LED lighting conversion, the remodeling of Coco’s, and the expansion of the woodshop. They are now gearing up for the remodel of the Chaparral and expansion of the Grand Café! In 2016, the Standards Department handled 2783 compliance issues, completed 610 resale inspections/ rechecks, did 776 ARC inspections, processed 2166 ARC applications, and took care of 6367 walk-in residents. In the past 4 months the department saw the approval of the new 8 session training curriculum, the approval of the new Design Guidelines, started a Grand Home of the Month program, and also a Verbal Proactive program, which to date has seen 100% compliance! Our Membership Department processed over 500 renters in January, almost 100 resales in February, and maintains the membership records for all 9802 homes. They run the Welcome Center which has over 40 volunteers greeting guests to our community on a faithful schedule. They are the fresh faces that represent this gorgeous resort community.

The Housekeeping Department handled set up and tear down for over 5000 special events in 2016 in addition to the regular room switch out, handled transport of supplies for Clubs and TV Studio, transported liquor for the events with bartending service, set up all the audio/visual needs for meetings and lectures, handled outdoor setups for special events (club tournaments and events), maintained all common area building cleaning, cleaned 51,000 sq. ft. of windows, maintained all golf course restrooms, handled all holiday decorating and lighting, and cleaned the outdoor sport courts. Grand Lifestyles | April 2017 | grandinfo.com

The Accounting Department handles

14 Points of Sale across the property (golf shops, food service, membership, etc.), approximately 14 million dollars in assessments, processes hiring, payroll, and benefits for 200 employees (with one Human Resources Coordinator), and handles the receipt and payment of the invoices for all the departments you are reading about here. They track the budget, handle the audit, the Association insurance, and provide support to committees. They also develop and maintain the reserve study and fund, outside investments, retained earnings, CARE fund, and the operating budget. Is your head spinning yet?

Our Purchasing Specialist handles all the bidding and contracts for projects in SCG. This one person department handles everything from ordering office supplies, exploring new products, tracking reserve replacements, putting out bid requests, tracking invoices and shipments, maintaining relationships with the vendors, and coordinating supplies for projects like the LED lighting and building remodels. Our IT department handles all the technology components that service all the departments and activities you read about in this article. They were instrumental in bringing electronic voting to our community and implementing a new VOIP phone system. You have our Technology Manager to thank for that free WIFI service you have in all of our common area buildings! Our executive team that supports our General Manager is always ready and willing to assist our residents with questions and concerns (hundreds of emails and phone calls a week) and provide support for our committees. Our General Manager, Ken Olson, oversees all of this! I must also stress that without Association Patrol, C.H.A.P.S., committee members, welcome desk volunteers, and our Board of Directors, this place could not function. Please take a moment to thank these residents who devote countless days a week toward keeping this community beautiful and peaceful. We hope this inspires you to join in the effort and volunteer to become part of the team!

Handicap placards (otherwise known has “hang tags”) are awarded to an individual with a documented need, as evidenced by a letter from a medical provider. Handicap plates are issued the same way – based on the person’s need. If the person who provided the medical proof of need is not in the vehicle or being picked up by the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle may NOT utilize a spot designated as Handicap. The reason is simple – there is no medical need for the proximity if the person with the disability is not getting in or out of the vehicle. Long story short – just because the car you are driving has a handicapped plate or placard, does not give the driver the right to use a designated spot. The accommodation is for a person, not for a vehicle. Please be mindful of this and leave the spots for those who need them when you are not accompanied by your disabled spouse/family member or are not the holder yourself.

(EFFECTIVE SEPT. 1, 2016 THROUGH AUG. 31, 2017) Approved Aug. 11, 2016 n Amended and Approved Sep. 14, 2016

FLEX PASS

Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

Over the years, many residents have had situations that caused them to not be able to fully utilize their golf pass that they have purchased. Also, more and more players have migrated over to the Resident Daily Fee category. In an effort to encourage more residents to purchase a pass to create more loyalty, the following refund policy is being requested. The refund will be issued for any reason. The refund policy would go into effect for one year as a trial period. All refund requests must be made prior to the expiration date of the effective pass.

PREMIUM PASS If a resident is seeking a refund for an unused portion of the Premium Pass, the following methods will be used to determine what, if any, refund will be returned. There will also be a $75 administration fee. n Using our point of sale system, the number of rounds that have been played under the Premium Pass will be totaled by month and then calculated at the peak resident daily fee for that month. n If that total calculated amount is less than the Premium Pass fee, then the resident would be issued a refund, minus the $75 administration fee.

GOLF ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPORT In concert with the development of the Sun City Grand Strategic Plan, the Golf Advisory Committee (GAC) has been tasked by the Board of Directors to develop a golf specific, comprehensive multi-year plan for maintenance of and improvements to our four golf courses. This plan is to include a prioritized list, with associated costs, of any major projects. The Board of Directors will use this as a guide during the annual budgeting 14

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

happy athletes

ARE SUCCESSFUL ATHLETES the next one. And the next. We get caught in never-ending pursuit, and, often without truly acknowledging where we’re at, we keep aiming forward. We endure endless suffering in pursuit of a mindset when we will no longer have to suffer…but that mindset never blossoms.

Allison Adams Fitness Manager

All too often we believe achieving our athletic goals will make us happy. What if being happy already was the key to our success? We train. We push. We suffer. As athletes, we typically believe that hard work and sacrifice will drive achievement, so we embrace the suffering. We tell ourselves that if we keep suffering long enough, hard enough, we’ll achieve what we set out to do. And THAT will be it. The thing. The thing more important than all that suffering. But achievement alone -whether it’s running that first mile, or finishing that first marathon - can’t sustain the kind of long-term 18

effort or investment needed to be an athlete, particularly a happy or wellbalanced one. To truly be content and accomplished as athletes, we must first be happy and shift our focus from our goals to ourselves as people (and typically, our goals will follow us anyway.) Do you remember Nicolaus Copernicus? The guy who proposed that the earth was in orbit around the sun, instead of the sun orbiting the earth? His “Copernican Shift” corrected a fundamental mistake about where we sit in the solar system, and it initiated a scientific revolution. Dr. Shawn Achor, a scientist who studies happiness, suggests that a similar shift in paradigm is needed to improve our understanding of success and the role happiness plays in it. His studies apply to our lives as athletes. Most of us — in life and sport — believe that success will bring us happiness. Dr. Achor suggests that instead of our happiness revolving around our success, our success instead revolves around our happiness. If we’re focused on success at the pinnacle of that achievement we can already see another pinnacle on the horizon and are consistently compelled to chase

This pressure to perform manifests itself in a myriad of ways; we obsess about what to eat in a constant search for a “perfect diet” designed to help us achieve our goals. We adhere strictly to training goals laser-beam focused on our performance, and tuning-out those around us who support and foster our success. If, instead, we were to shift our focus to being happy, more creative, more intelligent, energetic, productive, to live joyfully and to inspire others to do the same, it’s possible that we’d reach our goals faster, more easily, and more naturally. And then, because we would already be content, fulfilled - HAPPY those achievements would be icing on the cake (instead of the forbidden slice we’re not allowed to eat.) Society won’t make such a shift on our behalf; we’ll continue to live in a culture personified by athletics, encouraged to push ourselves instead of just to accept ourselves. So, how to create your own “Copernican Shift?” I invite you to think about the little things; to find the simple joys in your sport and take solace in the community of friends with whom you share it. If you feel you need a day of rest, take one. If you want to ride to the coffee shop with friends instead of doing another interval session, do it. Choose to enjoy your food, to enjoy your company, to engage in the community that supports you, to embrace the love around you and to pass it on to others. Choose to pursue happiness, and your success — in sport and in life — will follow. Grand Lifestyles | April 2017 | grandinfo.com

WEEDS FRIENDLY REMINDER FROM STANDARDS

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list.Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

Coming from an analytical background, I employ an holistic, quantitative approach to my athletic training. This involves not only strength and resistance training, but proprioceptive and kinesthesia exercises, pre-habilitation, sports psychology and the use of appropriate nutrition and

hydration strategies. Wherever possible and viable, I incorporate this approach with each of my clients. I accept that this extends far beyond the purview of most trainers. I believe, however, that the more I can offer, the more engaged and committed I can make those interested in improving health, wellness and lifestyle.

ONLINE NOW

Bob Aiken Board Member

The Election Committee and the Board of Directors thank all residents who used the new online voting process for the first time this year. It turned out to be a great time to introduce a new process as the election results were pre-determined due to having the same number of candidates as there were open positions. This enabled all to learn from a few issues that were not planned for. We feel confident in promising a fantastic experience for all residents in the future. To date, we have better than a fourth of our households registered to vote online (2,651 actual) which represents a great start. Our goal is to only use online voting as the process for our elections in the near future. Sun City Grand can save thousands of dollars each year when more residents use online voting. If you have not already registered to vote online for Sun City Grand elections (those who voted online are registered for all future elections), we ask that you consider doing so before summer. Many of our winter 22

residents will be returning to their summer homes and may not be giving much thought about voting until next fall. That may be too late to take advantage of the benefits of online voting, as we may be beginning a campaign in the fall supporting the approval of the recommended changes in our governing documents. Being able to maximize the efficiencies of online voting may enhance the timing for approval of these changes, therefore benefiting all owners.. So why wait? Register to vote online now. We received about 300 comments from residents who voted online during our past board election. Only three owners expressed frustration with the process, while twenty-seven wrote of operational concerns, and the remainder stated how pleased they were with this new system. A few examples: n “Great way to Vote. Thank you for setting this up.” n “I believe the existing board needs to change. Term limits.” n “Simple and easy to use. Thank you.” n “Change hot tub water once a week. Sometimes it’s very nasty.” n “The electronic voting is fantastic. Thanks for setting it up.” n “Please don’t remove any more grass or vegetation.” n “Nice to see the videos and bios in one place. All should participate.” n “Thanks for getting SCG into the 21st century.”

Of course, we could fill this magazine with all of the comments. Those of us who have worked on this for the past year appreciate all the comments. Each comment that contained a name and contact information was responded to. As the system is secure, we have no way of knowing the author of any comment unless that resident takes the time and includes their name, phone number, and/or email. Next steps…. The community will continue to ask all residents to register to vote online. It is easy, secure, and very informative as all the information, including any video supporting a candidate or initiative is accessible on the online ballot. We (Sun City Grand) also save about $1.55 for each resident who opts in to vote online versus receiving and mailing a paper ballot. With over 9,800 households within our community, that equates to more than $15,000 each year in savings. Instructions on how to register are located in this magazine as well as on flyers adjacent to the banners promoting Online Voting located throughout the community. Take a flyer home and follow the few steps and you will become registered to vote online in all future elections whether you are at home or traveling. Be it from your home computer, your laptop, or even your phone; as long as there is internet service available to you, you will be able to vote.

The only information you need to have to register is the last name of the primary resident of your home (that owner which has the digits “000” following his/her CAM number on their CAM card), the birthdate of that person and his or her four (4) digit CAM number. You will also be asked to provide the email address that you would like to the vendor, Vote-Now to use to contact you. Just log onto our website at grandinfo.com to get started. LaSolana residents are now able to register in a very similar way. Check out the instructions included in this magazine or the flyers placed throughout the community. Two things to remember. Set your address book to receive messages from scgelection@ vote-now.com and remember which email address you provided Vote-Now. These two issues were the causes for several questions from residents during the past election. Most importantly, we are asking for all residents to participate in this important process, and through online voting, and it’s many attributes, we believe more residents will vote in the future. Sun City Grand will be stronger if more residents take an active role in their future by voting. Thank you for your support and trust. Bob Aiken

What is PORA? FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

n

Ellie Brooks Board President

Residents and property owners of Sun City West formed a non-profit corporation to provide miscellaneous services for its members. Residents of Sun City Grand, since 2006, have been considered associate members of this same non-profit. Do you know what services are available to you for the $6,300 per year paid through Sun City Grand’s annual HOA budget? Yes, all Sun City Grand residents are associate members of the non-profit named “Sun City West Property Owners and Residents Association” or PORA. Associate memberships are paid for the entire community as part of Sun City Grand’s annual budget. What services do Grand residents receive for their memberships?

n

n

Consumer services: “PORA maintains a list of over 600 vendors whose references have been checked.” PORA can provide members with three or four names and phone numbers of qualified service people. While PORA neither guarantees nor warrants services and products, they will intercede with complaints from members. SCG residents may call 623-214-1646 for assistance; identify yourself as an associate member from Sun City Grand. Free notary service at PORA offices located at 13815 W Camino Del Sol in Sun City West.

n

Seminars and adult learning classes are described on the PORA website. Click PORA Adult Learning for descriptions of 182 classes offered in ten categories of learning. Spring classes are offered through April. The online catalogue is available at www.poraadultlearning.org.

n

PORA also maintains offices for the following services which might be of interest to SCG residents: n

n

A representative of the Maricopa County Assessor is in the PORA office every Tuesday and Thursday.

n

A representative of the Maricopa County Attorney is at PORA every Monday and Friday. The Arizona Office of Tourism is located in the Visitors Center located in the PORA building. A Taxpayer Advocate Service, an independent organization with the Internal Revenue Service, is at PORA the 1st Wednesday of each month from 1:00-3:00. A representative for Trent Franks (District 8 US House of Representative) is at PORA the 2nd Wednesday of every month.

The Member/Guest Tournament for the Grand Ladies 18 Hole Golf Association of SCG is held annually in early April.

The theme for this year’s event is

Around the World in 18 Holes This event has several hundred golfers who participate at two Sun City Grand golf courses. Members invite other Sun City Grand golfing residents as their guests as well as other guests from outside of Grand. Many guests travel from other states to join their friends for the day’s events. A luncheon is held at the Sonoran Plaza upon completion of the golf tournament. Amuse Bouche provides the lunch. In conjunction and cooperation with the Grand Glass Art Club, our tee gift is enhanced by the donation of special jewelry made by the members of the SCG Glass Arts Club. A tee/table gift is given to each of the tournament players. Raffle prizes, many provided by local merchants, are drawn and given to recipients. The winners of the various flights are awarded after scores are tallied. This tournament has been one of the highlights of the golfing season for the Grand Ladies Golf Association for many years, and a whole host of members volunteer to facilitate a successful event. 24

ABOUT THE ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS The Arizona Diamondbacks, often shortened as the D-backs, are an American professional baseball franchise based in Phoenix, Arizona. The club competes in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the National League (NL) West division. Since the team’s inception in 1998, the franchise has played home games at Chase Field, formerly known as Bank One Ballpark. The ballpark was renamed in 2005, as a result of Bank One Corporation’s merger with JPMorgan Chase & Co. The Diamondbacks have won one World Series championship (in 2001), becoming the fastest expansion team in the Major Leagues to win a championship, doing it in only the fourth season since the franchise’s inception in the 1998 Major League Baseball season. 26

BALLPARK SECURITY

CHASE FIELD

Heightened security measures established by Major League Baseball and the Arizona Diamondbacks will remain in effect for the 2017 season. We would like to remind you that these enhanced security measures might delay your entrance into the ballpark. Plan on arriving early to enjoy the game. These measures are for your safety. We understand that this may be an inconvenience, however due to the nature of current world events, we feel they are necessary. Thank you for your patience.

Nestled among Jefferson Street to the north, Fourth Street to the south and Seventh Street to the east, Chase Field is the epicenter of the downtown Phoenix sports experience.

ROOF INFORMATION The retractable roof, comprising 9 million pounds of structural steel, operates on the same tried-and-true technology found in drawbridges and overhead traveling cranes. A pair of 200-horsepower motors open or close the roof in slightly more than four minutes, utilizing more than four miles of cable strung through a pulley system. Each half of the roof consists of three moveable trusses which telescope over a fixed end truss. The east and west sides of the roof can operate either in unison or independently. Either side of the roof can be opened to any position in order to maximize sunlight on the turf and minimize it on the interior steel and concrete. For more information, call the roof hotline at 602-462-6262

PROMOTIONS

WALK THROUGH METAL DETECTORS AT CHASE FIELD Heightened security measures established by MLB and the D-backs will require everyone to go through metal detectors when attending events at Chase Field. As you approach a gate, our Guest Service Representative will greet you, scan your ticket, then advise you to “please remove your cellphone, keys and other metal objects only and place them in the bin on the table or inside your personal handbag, backpack, etc..” Change will not be required to be put into the bin. A Security staff member will then check any bags you may be carrying and then ask you to proceed through the detector. Please visit dbacks.com/security for more information regarding metal detection.

DINING & CONCESSIONS LEVY RESTAURANTS The exclusive restaurant partner for Chase Field since 2001, Levy Restaurants and the D-backs continue to elevate the fan experience year-to-year, evolving menus and leveraging the latest technology and guest insights to create a dining experience to match the excitement on the field. Whether we have 80 seats or 80,000, we obsess about every detail of the guest experience to make sure it’s the best it can be. That’s because our restaurant roots helped us pioneer the idea of premium dining at sports and entertainment venues. When the action starts, how about crab cakes and beef tenderloin? Lemon garlic chicken and a nice chardonnay? Even the D-backs Dogs and nachos will be the tastiest in town! We serve up “fan”-tastic experiences at over 100 exhilarating locations around the world and the hottest events, from the Super Bowl to the Kentucky Derby, and every major league championship game in between.

Randi Henk

Contributed by: Denna O’Connell SCG Resident

After spending years in the Financial Service Industry as a CPA (Certified Public Accountant), Randi Henk got involved with Clay Arts. She has had no formal art education, but since retirement she has taken a number of classes in art and clay. Just stopping by the studio one day had her hooked and one of her favorite projects was a simple plate she made in the beginning hand building class everyone must take to join the club. Randi said she loves it when people come into the studio and watch her work on a project. Most of what she creates are in a Southwestern style as indicated in the photos. She has to remind herself not to get too

attached to a project though until it is completely finished as there are any number of things that could go wrong before a glazed and fired piece comes out of the kiln. Learning how to glaze has been a challenge because glazes sometimes do not turn out as you had hoped, so there can be disappointments in the outcomes. Now only three years after moving to SCG, Randi is content taking more classes such as a mixing clays class and also teaching classes such as the beginning hand building class. She does not have a studio at home mainly because she enjoys interacting with others in the studio and getting both ideas and feedback from those around her. Besides clay, Randi is active in the Art

Club. She especially enjoys oil painting. She suggests just jumping in and taking a chance by taking a class. You may discover a new passion, and you will surely meet some fabulous artists.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

Cicero

Still Wise After All These Years

If you ever studied the greatest orators or took a class in Latin, you may have heard of Marcus Tullius Cicero who lived from 106 BC to 43 BC. This Roman philosopher, politician, lawyer, and orator, is perhaps best known for his 57 philosophical writings and letters, many of which have been lost over time. One of his most famous bits of wisdom is, “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” A good old age begins in youth.

Barbara Foster Executive Director, The Colonnade 623-236-3700

A Colonnade resident recently shared a book written in 44 BC by Cicero called “How To Grow Old.” In one passage, Cicero writes: “We must fight against old age by following a plan of healthy living, moderate exercise and eating and drinking just enough to restore our bodies without overburdening them. But as much as we should care for our bodies, we should pay even more attention to our minds and spirits for they are like lamps of oil, which will grow dim with time if not replenished. And even as physical exercise may tire the body, mental activity makes the mind sharper.” As I read it, I was struck by its similarities to the tenets of Masterpiece Living, a national movement that encourages older adults to keep their physical, intellectual, social and spiritual engines running and balanced. All three of Sun Health’s communities partner with Masterpiece Living. I thought it might be interesting to share some of the quotes from Cicero’s book, which still ring true thousands of years later. 32

Moderation, wisdom, clear thinking, enjoying all that life has to offer – these are habits we should learn while young since they will sustain us as we grow older.

Old age can be a wonderful part of life.

The word our ancestors used for a meal with friends was convivium meaning a ‘living together’ because it describes the essence of a social gathering.

There are proper seasons to life.

Nature has fashioned life so we enjoy certain things in our youth and others when older, and attempting to cling to youth is useless as it is fighting against nature.

Older people have much to teach the young.

Genuine wisdom in life can only be gained through experience; whereby it is the duty of the elder to pass onto youth who are willing to listen.

Old age need not deny us an active life, but we need to accept limitations.

He writes that older adults should remain physically active within the modest constraints imposed by the body. A man who practices exercise and selfcontrol can preserve some his vigor even as he grows older.

enjoy every stage of life free from worry. Memory fades with age if it is not exercised. Older people maintain a sound mind as they remain eager to learn and apply themselves.

Older adults must stand up for themselves.

He makes a point of saying the later years of life are no time for passivity.

Sex is highly overrated.

He states that while relentless sexual passions of youth fade as we grow older; this gives us room to enjoy other aspects of life that may be much more satisfying and lasting.

Cultivate your own garden.

Finding a worthwhile activity in our later years gives us true enjoyment, essential for happiness. Whatever may be your passion, pursue it with joy.

Death is not to be feared.

Whether death marks the end of human consciousness or the beginning of eternal bliss, he holds that life is like a play. And a good actor knows when to leave the stage. Just as the fruits and trees and earth must someday wither and fall, a wise person knows this and accepts it with grace. Nature has set boundaries for everything else, so too has she set the limits of life.

The mind is a muscle that must be exercised.

We must use our minds as much as possible as we grow older. One cannot praise the love and pursuit of wisdom enough since it allows a person to Grand Lifestyles | April 2017 | grandinfo.com

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

WAYS TO PRODUCE YOUR PHOTOS Dear Cappie, I spend a lot of time taking photos and then editing them on my computer … but I never take that next step. My wife suggested I take some of my best shots and “do something with them,” so my question is: What can I do with my images after I finish shooting my photos and editing them? Sincerely, William Dear William, While it is quite understandable that your enjoyment of the creation process is paramount, your wife does have an excellent point that the tangible results of the art based on your hard work should be displayed, admired, and enjoyed by many. A few suggestions to share your art are as follows:

SOCIAL MEDIA/PHOTO SHARING SITES/BLOG/ WEBSITE

Digitally speaking, you can post your images on the Internet to social media and photo sharing sites (Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, Smug Mug, 500px, etc.). By creating your own blog (WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, etc.) or building your own

website, in addition to displaying your art, you can write about the photos you have taken, discuss how you photographed/edited them, describe the locations and more.

SLIDESHOW/VIDEO/ STREAMING

Many photographers enjoy creating slideshows (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi Viewer, Pixgram, Slideshow Maker, ProShow, etc.) and videos of their work (which can also include music and narration). They display their creations online or play them (stream) on their home entertainment systems. For example, you can create short videos of your photos in the Moments portion of the Photo App on your iPhone or iPad (or use other apps) and

then stream the slideshow or video project to a large screen television via Apple TV, Roku, or other streaming devices.

PAPER/CANVAS/ POSTER

The most traditional method of showcasing your talent is to print your photos on glossy or matte paper via your inkjet or laser printer. Many folks today use commercial sites (Mpix, Shutterfly, Snapfish, Adorama, Walmart, Costco, Walgreens, etc.) for their printing needs because, in addition to paper, these places also print images on canvas, posters, make photobooks and more.

WOOD

Most photo printing services can print photos on hard surfaces such as metal, glass

and acrylic, but printing on wood boards is less common. PhotoBarn https://www. photobarn.com/ does a great job on nature photos but also does an excellent job on subjects like buildings, architecture, and abstracts as well. It is a family business which makes its products by hand in a “barn/warehouse” in Tennessee. The wood they use is smooth and thick, and gives images a crisp look with a slight sheen. PhotoBarn also can print your photos on canvas and burlap.

ENGINEER PRINTS

One very inexpensive way to turn photos into wall art is by making Engineer prints, named for the large, lightweight prints used by architects. They are

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT especially great for huge enlargements (like 18" by 24", 24" by 36", 30" by 42", 36" by 48"), so using an image with the most megapixels your camera can produce is helpful if not essential in making the finished product. The images are printed on very thin paper and the lines of the images are somewhat softer than fine art prints. The trend for displaying engineer prints is not to formally frame them but to stick them on the walls with washi tape (which can be purchased in many colors and patterns online or at craft stores). Other methods used to display these prints is to use wood poster rails or skeleton clips. Engineer prints can be purchased online and ParaboPress (https://parabo.press/) does

excellent work. Another site to check out is Staples (https://documents.staples. com/ASP1/CATEGORIES/ SKU/oversizedprints. aspx). Once you access either website, establish an account, and upload your image. Prices vary on each site and sometimes they offer specials, coupons, sales, or Groupon.

off as well. The images produced on the fabric prints keep their detail and color quite well. More than a dozen sizes from 4x4 to 36x54 are available priced from $1.50 to $79.99 (without a coupon).

Cappie always enjoys a The Cabaret Players variety of toys to play with

and believes you too will like a variety of methods and media to showcase your personal art. Also, check out the Photo Club here in Grand for classes; entering your images in competition; printing, matting, mounting your images and more. Try some of these suggestions and see what works for you.

FABRIC PRINTS

Another less traditional method to print enlargements of your images is on fabric prints made of matte woven fabric from websites like SnapBox (https://snapbox.com/ posters/?new_menu=1 ). Instead of framing it, you peel off the adhesive and stick it on your wall but unlike vinyl, it’s odor free and easy to apply and peel

FROM THE GRAND HIKERS CLUB

GRAND HIKERS ADVENTURE INTO THE

SUPERSTITION WILDERNESS Contributed by Carol Ohls Hike Leader, Grand Hikers

Carol Ohls and Helga Hilderbrand, both hike leaders for Grand Hikers organized an early November 2016, four-day, out-of-town hike to the Superstition Wilderness. Why, you might ask when the Superstition Mountains aren’t really “out-of-town?” In 2015 they proposed this high-quality hiking adventure so Grand Hikers Club could experience more trails and social time and replace the long commute. Why the Superstitions? Helga enjoys hiking in the Superstitions and likes to show it to other hikers. She said, “The rock formations like Battleship and Weavers Needle are awesome and the trails give me the feeling of being in a remote area.”

And share Helga, Carol and other hike leaders did. Each of the four days saw between 22 to 29 hikers dispersed over two to three different hikes. After hearing Carol and Helga’s proposal, the Grand Hikers board of directors gave their hearty approval and a great deal of planning began. Carol and Helga decided on a Gold Canyon hotel and gained the participation of hike leaders. Next, they chose from the myriad of hike options offered by the Superstitions. The planners and some hike leaders went there in person to explore and finalize selections. Then generating enthusiasm of hikers began and continued over a period of eight months. Interest was not difficult to cultivate.

Finally, after months of planning it was time to hike. Day one the Massacre Grounds hike began with 24 hikers, led by Helga and Gary Petersen. Massacre Trail took hikers several miles up to a waterfall wall. Day two offered three different levels of hikes. Boulder Canyon, starting at Canyon Lake, to Canyon Overlook was led by Sharon Mccloskey. Boulder Canyon, starting at Canyon Lake, to Drop Off Point overlooking LaBarge Creek was led by Larry Timmons. The third hike, Second Water, was led by Carol and swept (sweeper) by Monica Amnteg, starting at the First Water Trail Head, crossing La Barge Creek, connecting onto Boulder Canyon and ending at Canyon Lake. All 23 hikers had the wonderful view of Canyon Lake, one of the countless awesome views from these trails. Day three offered three hikes of different levels. The Hieroglyphic Hikers in Geronimo Caves in Superstition Wilderness

Carol has hiked all over the state of Arizona. Her motive was simply to share the awesome views with others.

How Pre-Emergent Herbicide Works of pre-emergent like a blanket – you need to cover an entire area through which the weed seeds cannot germinate. Spot spraying achieves nothing, as there is plenty of open space for weeds to come through.

Grand Hikers

Trail was led by Helga. This was an easy hike only a short drive from the hotel. Highlights were boulders with hieroglyphic writing. The Peralta Trail (the most hiked trail in the Superstitions) to the Lone Pine Tree was led by Gary Petersen and swept by Gary Huffine. The most difficult hike, the Peralta Trail to Robbers Roost and Geronimo Cave, was led by Ron Fox and swept by Kris Fox— 23 hikers finished and enjoyed this variety of panoramic views and scenery.

Pre-emergent Herbicide Must Be Watered In

This Article was provided by

Mike Secrist from Gothic Grounds Management

The last day, two hikes were available for the finale. Flat Iron Foothills Loop was co-lead by Larry and Sharon. This connection of trails is near Dutchman State Park and overlooks Apache Junction. A Grand Hikers favorite, Bluff Springs Loop, was led by Ron and swept by Helga. This offers splendid views of Weavers Needle, Miners Needle and beyond.

Pre-emergent herbicides are designed to control germinating weed seeds. As its name suggests, pre-emergent is targeted towards weeds that have not yet emerged from the soil. To get the best results, the weeds should not be visible above ground at the time of application. Pre-emergent is not designed to control existing weeds.

The Grand Hikers experience is possible by the efforts of many, beyond those mentioned in this article. In addition to offering memorable hiking and good social opportunities, health and safety are priorities. You can find out more at http://www.scghikers.org and by attending meetings on first Mondays at 3 p.m. October through May in the Hopi Room at the Chaparral Center. Visitors are welcome!

The weed will only be killed when it begins to sprout from the seed and hits the herbicide barrier. It is possible for seeds to remain dormant and not be harmed by the preemergent herbicide application. This is why weed control is a constant process. There will always be seeds under the surface and a portion will germinate each season. Annual applications must be made to significantly reduce large infestations.

Watering in activates the herbicide, creating a barrier just below the surface. Most products call for .5 inches of irrigation or rain within 21 days after application. Anticipation of rain or manual watering is a key component. Surface disruption (raking or digging) will break the blanket barrier and allow seeds to germinate.

Tip for April Check your irrigation system to make sure it is working properly before the real heat arrives. Apply fertilizer to any plants or trees that require supplemental nutrition. Any last minute hard pruning should be completed in April.

Thorough coverage is the key. Think

GRAND LEARNING Information and Registration at 623-546-7470 or grandlearning.org SUMMER REGISTRATION? Do you believe it is already time for summer registration?? YES, we do have a summer program with offerings running from May through August. You can pick up a brochure right outside the Grand Learning office. REGISTRATION BEGINS ON MONDAY, APRIL 3 AT 9 a.m. As always, you can register online, in person, or over the phone. From movies to current events, from investments to your health, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Get out of the heat and come be a part of our cool Grand Learning Summer Program. (Now might be a good time to access your online account. If you need assistance, don’t hesitate to call us at 623.546.7470. You don’t want to wait for the morning of registration to realize you might need help!) NEW LOCATION Due to plans for renovation of the Chaparral Center, all of our summer classes will be held in the SONORAN PLAZA. Look for classroom signs outside of Palms, Palo Verde or Mesquite to find your classroom. For our movie series, we’ll be located in the Sagebrush Ballroom, also located in the Sonoran Plaza. With plans underway for Fall 2017 (classes to begin in mid-October) let us know if you have an idea for a class or feel that you have a talent you can share as an instructor. (Our disclaimer: we may not have an instructor for a particular topic you suggest and not all class ideas make it into the catalog.) We are planning on holding registration in mid-September – keep your eyes open for our fall catalog to arrive around Labor Day.

WHAT IS A STEERING COMMITTEE? Ever wonder how certain decisions get made? A lot of the ‘who, what, where, when and how’ of Grand Learning is decided between Grand Learning Staff and the Lifestyles Director. But we have help! That’s where the Grand Learning Steering Committee comes in. Members of the Steering Committee meet twice a year to discuss what’s happening at Grand Learning. They make suggestions, help find new instructors, go to bat for us when needed, and volunteer in and around the building during the semester. Why a Steering Committee? The committee’s importance was clear some years back when the program was struggling a bit and separation from ASU seemed imminent. The group taking charge of Grand Learning at that time kept the program alive while ensuring its future. Today some of those past members still remain, while others offer their talents in and around Grand Learning in other ways. With backgrounds in systems engineering, education, financial matters, technology, and strategic planning, our Steering Committee brings a wealth of talent and experience which enhances our program and continues to make Grand Learning even better year after year. While celebrating our 15th year, we can’t imagine having made it this far without our past and present Steering Committee members! Thank you from all of us who participate and enjoy Grand Learning!
