FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
What Determines
How Your Community Association Works?
Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager
About 70 million Americans own properties in Homeowners, Condo, and Cooperative Housing Associations. These associations are generally referred to as Home Owners’ Associations (HOA’s). Our Community is incorporated as Sun City Grand Community Association, Inc., a non-profit organization. CAM (Community Association Management) is made up of a staff under the direction of the General Manager to implement the day-to-day operations of the Association, in accordance with the policies established by the Board of Directors. The General Manager works under the authority of the Board of Directors. We are all aware that living in an association-governed community comes with certain obligations and responsibilities. For homeowners to gain a clear understanding of the workings of their association-governed community, it is essential to establish a knowledge of the Association’s Purpose, Authority, and Governance. 1. What is the basic function of a community association? a. The Association’s purpose is to maintain the amenities and common elements of the community by adopting and enforcing rules and regulations, thereby preserving property values, and providing its members with a safe environment to live in. b. Associations ensure that the collective rights and interests of homeowners are respected and preserved. c. Associations are the most local form of representative democracy, with leaders elected by their neighbors to govern in the best interest of all residents.
2. What are the essential obligations and expectations of homeowners? a. Associations provide services and amenities to residents, protect property values and meet the established expectations of homeowners. b. Associations succeed when they cultivate a true sense of community, active homeowner involvement and a culture of building consensus. c. Association homeowners have the right to elect their community leaders and to use the democratic process to determine the policies that will protect their investments. d. Association homeowners choose where to live and accept a contractual responsibility to abide by established policies and meet their financial obligations to the association. 3. What are the core principles that should guide association leaders? a. Association leaders (Board of Directors elected by the members) have a “fiduciary obligation” to the Association to protect the community’s financial health and its’ assets, using established management practices and sound business principles. They have the legal and ethical obligation to adhere to the by all applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, as well as the Association’s “Governing Documents” listed below: i. Plats of Survey and Easement Agreements ii. Declaration of Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions (CC&Rs) iii. Bylaws iv. Articles of Incorporation v. Rules and Regulations vi. Policies vii. Architectural Guidelines b. Association leaders seek an effective balance between the preferences of individual residents and the collective rights of homeowners. c. Association leaders, and all residents, should be reasonable, flexible and open
to the possibility—and benefits—of compromise. Governing Documents provide a structure to the Community and all of its members, dictating the guidelines as to how the Association must be governed. The Association and all members thereof share the contractual obligation to abide by the agreed terms and conditions of the Governing Documents. The Bylaws give us direction on how the Association governance should be conducted. Article III. C. 3.17 of the Bylaws, Statement of Operational Policy, states, “The primary duty of the Board of Directors shall be to establish the operational policies of the Association and to exercise its powers and duties in a manner which ensures that such policies are carried forth. The Board is not responsible for nor authorized to perform day-to-day operations of the Association. The day-to-day operations of the Association shall be carried out by the management agent or agents CAM retained by the Association or, if no management agent is so retained, by such Persons designated or employed by the Board to perform management functions under the supervision of the officers of the Association.” In order to understand your specific responsibilities, you must review your specific HOA’s Governing Documents and applicable laws. The Board of Directors and the Membership are interdependent. Simply put, without each other’s support, the Community Association system would fail, resulting in the loss of property values in the community. The election process for the Sun City Grand Board of Directors is currently under way. Please take the time to learn as much as you can about each candidate, how they think, and how you believe he/ she would best serve the short- and longterm needs of Sun City Grand. Then, if you haven’t already done so, CAST YOUR VOTE! Remember, VOTING ENDS FEBRUARY 15.
CONVERSATION WITH KEN
The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Next Conversations with Ken is on February 21, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Palm Center.

CANDIDATE CONSIDERATIONS FROM THE Community Manager
Kym Stutzman Community Manager
February is a very important month at Sun City Grand. This year in addition to the events everyone looks forward to like Wine Down Wednesdays, the Grand Series (TAD) performances, and the WM Phoenix Open; we also have special events like Dr. Hultsman’s work with the residents and a performance by the Oak Ridge Boys! But the most important thing happening in February at SCG is the Board of Directors Election. Having a qualified and committed Board, which truly represents the will of the members, is critical to the health of a community. Therefore, if you haven’t already voted (voting ends February 15th), I hope you will keep these pointers in mind. It is important that you read the candidate summaries and do some research on the candidate to evaluate whether or not each of those individuals who earns your vote truly represents your views for this community. Then, after they have been elected – whether your selections are the winners or not – I encourage you to support your Board and view the Directors as your allies. I have surveyed the wisdom of HOA professionals, organizations, and publications to bring you a list of things to look for in a Director and in a Board as a whole. 12
First I will share the “Traits of Successful HOA Board Members” according to HOAleader.com which are summarized below:
professional like an engineer, accountant, or attorney,” says Matthew A. Drewes. Then you must be able to go a step further—listen!
THE WILLINGNESS TO DIG IN.
THE ABILITY TO DELEGATE.
That takes hard work and commitment. A BENT TOWARD CONSISTENCY.
Owners are much more likely to stay within the rules if they know their board will consistently enforce them. THE ABILITY TO PLAY FAIR.
A FLAIR FOR OPENNESS AND CONCILIATION.
“You can’t be a, ‘Do as I say and not as I do’ kind of person on the board,” says Nathaniel Abbate Jr. A SENSE OF HONESTY.
“You need to be honest and understand how to avoid the appearance of impropriety. You have to be flexible as well; you may not agree with the law or a rule, but you have to abide by it,” says Dennis J. Eisinger. THE GOOD SENSE TO ASK FOR HELP.
“You need an understanding of when it’s effective to consult an appropriate
“Board members should be comfortable delegating certain tasks, like matters to an architectural review committee,” says Drewes, “as opposed to having the board handle everything and manage every detail.”
“Make sure you listen to your entire constituency, whether it’s the board or your membership. Things go better when members feel their interests are being taken into account and that it’s a twoway street,” advises Duane McPherson. THE ABILITY TO ADAPT AND CHANGE.
This is not a static industry! A THICK SKIN.
When making decisions for this many people you can expect to be a target. Grand Lifestyles | February 2018 | grandinfo.com
Next, here is a list of traits of a great Board unit provided by the same resource and adapted from an article by Julie Adamen: GREAT BOARDS FOCUS ON THE BIG PICTURE
Great boards will establish and continually review and refine a Mission Statement for their HOA along with clear policies for all facets of community administration to follow. GREAT BOARDS HOLD PRODUCTIVE MEETINGS
Great boards hold efficient, productive meetings while still allowing homeowners to air opinions and board members to discuss, debate and take action on various issues. There are five main elements to a successful board meeting: n Start off organized and stick to an agenda n Keep priorities in order n Assign responsibility for every action decided on n Focus on results n Control homeowner input They know being prepared develops the community’s trust in them as leaders and gives them the ability to make decisions on the community’s behalf in a timely manner. Any questions these prepared board members have were answered before the meeting began by staff, vendors, or another board member so the HOA’s business can be conducted efficiently and productively. GREAT BOARDS PROTECT AGAINST LIABILITIES
This means that great boards keep rogue Board members in check. Great boards don’t allow a single board member to put the entire community in jeopardy. If a board member says or does something inappropriate, a great board member will control the situation by addressing the improper behavior. Failing to reign in these types of situations can be a serious liability for the board and the community. GREAT BOARDS REMEMBER THEIR FIDUCIARY DUTY
To make decisions as fiduciaries, boards must base their decision on logic and reason, not on emotion or fear, giving the board and the community credibility and integrity for the long-term as they occupy that place of special trust and confidence. GREAT BOARDS ACKNOWLEDGE STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS
Publicly and privately, great boards continually acknowledge all contributors to the administration of the community, including other board members, committee members, management staff, etc. This creates a positive, successful image for the HOA. People like to be a part of something
That there are Association rules and City ordinances governing dogs? Your Rules and Regulations (Board policy) state: “In all common area open spaces where pets are not prohibited, pets must be on leashes, accompanied by their owners, and under control at all times. Owners of pets are responsible for the immediate removal and disposal of all solid animal waste of such owners' pets. The Pet Park located near the tennis courts is available to all members of the Association; however, all pets entering the Pet Park must be registered with the Association. Registration forms are available at the Activities Desk along with a copy of the Pet Park Rules. These forms may also be printed from www.grandinfo.
they find effective and worthwhile, meaning this positive image will help encourage homeowners to get involved in HOA initiatives, and foster a friendlier environment for the staff already on board. In other words, great boards know they can’t do it alone, and embrace all the help that comes their way. GREAT BOARDS KNOW THEY GET WHAT THEY PAY FOR
Whether it is staff, vendors, or consultants - have reasonable expectations.
GREAT BOARDS SPEAK WITH ONE VOICE
This is crucial for any board, but particularly those who have seriously disgruntled folks in their midst. Great boards stick together and show a united front to their members, creating credibility and integrity. GREAT BOARDS PUT ASIDE PERSONAL AGENDAS
You are now the voice of many. GREAT BOARDS ARE PROACTIVE WITH INFORMATION
Great boards seek out information and education on all aspects of community administration and maintenance as it applies to their community. GREAT BOARDS COMMUNICATE POSITIVELY AND REGULARLY WITH MEMBERS
Communication creates a sense of openness and allows for the outflow of positive communication about
Grand Lifestyles | February 2018 | grandinfo.com
com.” Also, the CC&R’s state further conditions that residents are limited to owning a total of three cats/ dogs (any combination) and that “no pet shall be allowed to make objectionable noises or an unreasonable amount of noise.” Lastly, The City of Surprise also sets an additional requirement when walking your dog as reflected in this statement from the City website: “Be a responsible pet owner. When you are out in your community walking your dog, in your neighborhood or at city parks, all dogs must be on a leash not longer than 6 feet at all times. (City Ordinance Sec. 1056.) To report a loose or barking dog, contact the Surprise Police Department at 623.222.4000 or submit an online request on the City’s website.
the community. It also creates board credibility by fostering a positive attitude while still giving the membership needed information and reminders. Great boards know there are ways to say no, but in a positive fashion. GREAT BOARDS HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR GREAT BOARDS VALUE INTEGRITY AND CREDIBILITY ABOVE ALL ELSE
All boards are potentially great boards. By determining which of the top traits can be incorporated in to your board, you can achieve outstanding service for the community and a satisfying experience for each board member. Taking your board from good to great takes true vision, and the will to serve yourselves and the community at the highest level.* * Visit www.HOAleader.com to read these two articles in their entirety and explore more useful HOA information. So now that you know what to look for in an individual director and the Board as a whole – go vote for the best Board ever in an election with (hopefully) the greatest voter participation in the history of SCG. In a future column I will follow up with some tips for new Board members and a list of things that the residents can do to keep the Association strong and the community one that continues to shine as the example of resort living in Arizona – watch for it! 13
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Over the years I have seen many golfers make the golf swing more complicated than it should be, and they are working on too many things. Try this out to maybe make things a little easier. Just remember PGA: Posture, Grip and Alignment.
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
POSTURE – Your feet should be shoulder width apart, with your weight balanced on the balls of your feet. Flex your knees, bend at the hips (not the waist) and keep your spine straight.
GRIP – Loosen your death grip on your club. You want to hold the club securely without squeezing too tightly. You also want to keep your body relaxed and not rigid. The 3 most commonly used grips are the Ten Finger grip, Interlock and the Vardon. Ten finger (baseball) grip: Beginners, players with joint pain and those with small hands sometimes find the ten finger grip the most comfortable. To achieve it, simply lock the pinkie finger of the trailing hand close against the index finger of the lead hand.
Interlock grip: The next most common grip works better for people with less powerful forearms, weak wrists or smaller hands. With this grip, the hands are literally locked together by curling the pinkie finger of the trailing hand around the index finger of the lead hand. The downside of this grip is that, with less finger pressure controlling the club, the handle can sometimes drift against the palms. Vardon grip: Probably the most popular and common golf grip, the Vardon or “overlapping” grip is achieved by fitting the pinkie finger of the trailing hand between the index and middle finger of the lead hand. ALIGNMENT – Picture a set of railroad tracks running from the ball to your target. Your body is aligned on the inside rail. Your ball is on the outside rail, which runs in a straight line from the ball to your target.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
HEALTHY LIVING TO THE MAX! HIKING IS EDUCATIONAL!
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Contributed by Larry Timmons SCG Resident
It has been said, “If you don't use what Mother Nature gave you, Father Time will take it away”. Much of the current research on aging points to the importance of exercise, social connections, and mentally challenging activities. Hiking is the perfect activity for people who want to remain active and enjoy their retirement years to the max.
HIKING IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH!
An article in “Medscape Medical News” reports on a study of healthy, sedentary adults in Austria who volunteered to hike in the Alps for four months. For the study, one group hiked up a ski resort mountain in the Alps and descended by cable car, while the other group rode the cable car up and hiked down. After two months of hiking, the groups switched hiking programs and repeated the experiment. A full metabolic profile was obtained after each hiking session. Both uphill and downhill hiking provided measureable health benefits by reducing LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, removing blood sugars, and improving glucose tolerance. Hiking uphill, but not downhill, reduced triglyceride levels.
If you meet a bear in the wild, don't run. Because bears like fast food! That’s a joke, but you do learn lots of useful and interesting information while hiking. Some trails have interpretive signs and literature. Many of the hiking club hike leaders research the history of an area where they are taking the club and point out prominent geological, historical, and other interesting facts. Did you know, for example, that the White Tank Mountains in the “backyard” of Sun City Grand form the western boundary of the Valley of the Sun. And the highest point in this mountain range is Barry Goldwater Peak at an elevation of 4,083 feet which is almost 3,000 feet above the desert below. Or that the ancient Hohokam Indians lived there until about 1400 A.D. as evidenced by the many petroglyphs and pottery shards they left behind. Later the early settlers herded goats and cattle there. Some of the hiking trails in the White Tank Regional Park go by the remnants of water tanks, rock and barbed wire corrals, an old dam, and the walls of a small cabin.
HIKING CHALLENGES US!
Sir Edmund Hilary, from New Zealand, the first man to climb to the top of Mt. Everest, knew what it was like to deal with adversity and not give up. Avalanches, dehydration, hypothermia, and the physical and mental fatigue caused by the lack of oxygen at 29,000 feet all stood between him and the top of the world's tallest mountain. All of those who dared to climb it before had
failed. Edmund Hilary, who reached the top said, “It's not the mountain that we conquer, but ourselves”. Many Sun City Grand hikers set personal goals to challenge themselves both mentally and physically. It may be to progress from easier rated hikes to more challenging distances and climbing elevations, as they gain hiking experience and conditioning. For others, the challenge might be to cross something off their “bucket list,” like hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, making it to the top of a prominent mountain like Humphreys Peak, or completing one of the many sponsored hiking activities, like the annual National Trail Trek, or the Maricopa County Regional Park’s “100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge”.
“Hiking is the exercise that needs no gym. It is the prescription without medicine, the weight control without diet, the cosmetic that is sold in no drugstore. It is the tranquilizer without a pill, the therapy without a psychoanalyst, the fountain of youth that is no legend. A hike is the vacation that does not cost a cent.” —Aaron Sussman
Other studies suggest that weight bearing exercises like hiking help reverse the negative effects of osteoporosis by increasing bone density and slowing the rate of calcium loss. The University of Washington found that women with osteoporosis who walked for one hour three days per week increased bone density in the spine and other parts of the body by 6 percent over a nine-month period. 18

Career included the brokerage business, followed by branch and corporate management within the soft drink industry. Activities include Finance Advisory Committee, Golf Advisory Committee, Lifestyle Advisory Committee, Armed Forces Support Group, Men’s Golf Club, and the Softball Club. I am off ering my time and abilities to continue to assist in preserving and enhancing the quality of life we currently enjoy at Grand. Decisions will be based on facts, not emotion, with an underlying need of what will benefi t our community today and in the future. I will make sure we continue a proactive role during the annual budget process with greater emphasis on long term strategic planning. Added attention must focus on improving the level of trust our residents have with the Board of Directors. Improved levels of communication throughout our community must become a priority. My leadership style is one of inclusion and consensus building. I am a good listener and respect everyone’s input. No matter our diff erences, you will be heard. Meet the Candidates
There are four (4) openings and six (6) candidates for the 2018 Board of Directors’ election.
Martha Bails
Our community is over 20 years old and some common area items not in the reserves have been a priority for improvement by your Board. Some have been accomplished over the past 4 years. To pay for these improvements retained earnings and/or CARE funds have been used so the Members base assessment was not impacted. SOME OF THESE ITEMS ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. Water conservation by installing irrigation controllers with up-to-date technology. 2. Converting outdoor lights to LED and automatic dimmers to conserve electricity. 3. Lake hard edging has been done in phases over the past four years with several more phases yet to be completed. 4. Planned for 2018 is converting most interior lighting to LED. I have lived in our community since 1999. I served three years on the Surprise Planning and Zoning Commission and four ½ years on the city council. I am currently serving on your board and the Community Association Institute board and I’m a member of the Legislative Action Committee which tracks legislation to ensure they benefit HOAs/Condos. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR VOTE. You can contact me at mbails1@cox.net. Thank you, Martha Bails

Chaco Canyon
National Historical Park DAY ONE We’ll head towards Payson with plenty of sightseeing and a stop for coffee and goodies, on our way to Heber, Arizona, for lunch on self at the Red Onion Restaurant—an award winning restaurant, with a menu that offers something for everyone. After lunch we’ll jump back on the bus headed for Farmington, New Mexico, where we’ll check into our hotel—our headquarters for the next two nights. We’ll take some time for a refresh before gathering for our own Happy Hour, included, and afterwards we’ll make our way to Los Hermanito’s for a great New Mexican style dinner on self.
DAY TWO We’ll enjoy breakfast, included at the hotel. After breakfast we’ll head for Chaco Canyon. Chaco Canyon was an important Anasazi cultural center from about 900 through 1130 A.D. About 30 ancient masonry buildings, containing hundreds of rooms each, attest to Chaco’s importance. Some structures are thought to serve as astronomical observatories or calendars. Archaeologists discovered jewelry made from Mexican and Californian materials in ancient trash heaps. Large well-constructed roadways thought to be built for pilgrims, subjects, or traders, lead from sites 50 miles away to the center of Chaco Canyon. In a very real sense, all roads lead to Chaco. Though there is substantial evidence that the Anasazi farmed here, they had to use many dry farming techniques to support 24

themselves. In fact, some archaeologists question whether Chaco Canyon supported itself, or whether outside farming sites sent supplemental food. There is no written record of the Chacoans. Most of what we know about them relies on inference and circumstantial evidence. Almost everything about Chaco is shrouded in mystery. Its structures are huge and its former importance is clear, but we know little about it. Archaeology and speculation rule here. Chaco is a park for the mind. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch while exploring Chaco Canyon, included. Late afternoon we’ll head back to our hotel in Farmington. After a refresh we’ll again gather for our own Happy Hour, included, and then it’s off to enjoy dinner on self.
DAY THREE We’ll enjoy breakfast at the hotel, included, and then it’s bags out and we’re headed for home. We’ll make several great stops and do plenty of sightseeing on this relaxing journey back to the Valley. This remarkable tour should be on everyone’s bucket list!
The very remote Chaco site of northwest New Mexico has the largest, best preserved and architecturally advanced of all ancient Southwestern villages, equal in importance to Mesa Verde in Colorado and although lacking the dramatic cliff alcove setting, the ruins here are made more evocative by the great desolation and emptiness of the surrounding countryside. This part of the state is mostly flat, sandy desert crossed by only a few little-used tracks, very sparsely settled and with no prominent geographical feature for many miles. Only a few low gorges and mesas interrupt the general flatness, and the prevailing aridity plus the long winters experienced by this relatively high location (6,200 feet) make this an odd place for what was a large and advanced civilization to develop. But for 300 years the Anasazi Chacoan villages most based on a single walled enclosure with hundreds of inter-linked rooms known as a great house, were at the center of a network of roads and outlying settlements that extended 100 miles to the south, west and north, and include a few others also well preserved today like Aztec Ruins near Farmington. americansouthwest.net/ new_mexico/chaco_culture/ national_historical_park.html

SCG RESIDENT OF THE MONTH
Carol Hodgson is a “Grand” Miniaturist
Nominated and Submitted by Bob Harris SCG Resident
Carol Hodgson, “Bear” to family and many friends, is an artist who sees the wonder, joy, humor and uniqueness of life’s events and reproduces them in an artistic form called “miniatures” which is the creation of three dimensional scenes with careful attention to scale. Her interest in miniatures began in the late 1980s. A dollhouse was the focus of her early creative interest. She started by reproducing precious moments from her life’s story, beginning with her grandparent’s 1940’s living room in their Illinois farm house. Also, she reproduced her family’s living room at Christmas time in the early 1950s based upon old family photos. This scene shows the three Hodgson children with Bear crawling under the tree hoping to find at least one more gift. And, yes, she had them all “shrunk” to scale of 12” equals 1”.
26
Other examples reflecting her memories include the one room school house vignette. The scene rests on four of her favorite childhood books and was the beginning of her love for learning. The room with her cat, which seems to be innocently studying her art work, notes her humor because on the floor rests a broken flower pot knocked over by him.
Her artistic creations include beautiful miniature gowns. What makes these gowns so unique is the use of facial tissue instead of fabric. Check out her interpretation of Princess Kate’s miniature wedding gown with its beautiful and extremely delicate lace on the arms and bodice.
Bear’s recent interest has turned to an even smaller scale called “micro scale” (in other words very very small) which is more difficult to make but easier to display. The house in a tea cup is an example. Bear has been featured in national publications and she participates in local, region and national miniature shows. Through miniatures she has made lifelong friends and she is leaving a legacy of her life in miniature.
In addition, she expresses her creativity through vignettes such as the Southwest patio, travel trailer with a miniaturist in residence, and Cinderella who comes to life in an old tree stump.
To extend your interest in miniatures: 1) visit the Thorne Rooms at the Phoenix Art Museum; 2) Google “Miniatur Wunderland, Hamburg Germany” and/or 3) visit the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures in Tucson.

WHO REPRESENTS YOU? The SCG Neighborhood Representative Program (Neighborhood Reps) create a vital communications link between the homeowners in each of the Grand’s 63 neighborhoods and the Community Association as a whole. Unfortunately, at this time 14 neighborhoods are without representation. If you live in one of these neighborhoods, do you know what important information you may have missed? Please consider the contribution you could
make to your friends and neighbors by volunteering to act as the Neighborhood Rep. Maybe you have a friend who would volunteer to act as your alternate and share tasks with you. GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT. If you are interested, please contact Monica Rodriguez at 623-546-7473 or monica. rodriguez@scgcam.com for more information or to submit your name. You’ll be providing a valuable service to your neighbors.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
from the
TOWN HALL MEETING The Board Is Assuming Too Much Power Under the old documents, Del Webb had complete control of the HOA with finances, home and community aesthetics. Del Webb subsidized community expenses until they departed. The developer had more power than the Board has today. Sun City Grand now needs to be selfsufficient. Within the proposed document changes the Board has carefully analyzed all aspects for the future of our community including committee and organizational changes (a minimum of 5 members on the Board, Board members not voting on committees, no gifts or conflict of interest) strategic/long-term planning (Board assuming responsibility of the common area) and financial budgets, present and future. Under any HOA in the State of Arizona, the Board has the final fiduciary responsibilities for its members. Each year an election is held and you vote for the member(s) you think can best assume the fiduciary duties. Once the Board is seated they assume all responsibility for the community, its operations and allocation of dollars spent. 38
Better Usage Of Care Fund Proposed changes to our CARE Fund will benefit our residents now and in the future by allowing wider use of the fund. The look ahead from the strategic planning committee put fourth many ideas that will not be possible without enhanced CARE revenues. Allowing the BOD to set the rate according to wants and needs will benefit the entire community. It will also help to HOLD OUR BASE ASSESSMENT DOWN!
Grand Lifestyles | February 2018 | grandinfo.com
Two–Signature Requirement On Checks Concern has been raised regarding the apparent reduction from two signatures to one on checks issued by the Association. Unfortunately, the Consent Committee added to the confusion by mistakenly implying that this was the case on some of the materials we distributed as part of the campaign to approve the new documents. First, it is important to note that two signatures have always been required on checks issued by Sun City Grand, and there is no intention to change this going forward. It is a financial best practice and provides added security for our transactions.
The confusion comes from the removal from the current bylaws of the phrase “All agreements, contracts, deeds, leases, checks, and other instruments of the Association (other than for the withdrawal of reserve funds) shall be executed by at least two different individuals who are officers of the Association, or by such other person or persons as may be designated by resolution of the Board.” This was removed because it is included in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), which is required in section 3.20 of the revised Bylaws.

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS 2017 IN REVIEW
During 2017 C.H.A.P.S. volunteers stopped literally thousands of times at Sun City Grand residences to inspect the outside of their homes and surrounding property, and also to inform homeowners of garage doors left open after dark. Your safety, security, and peace-ofmind, whether you are at home or away from SCG, is what is important to C.H.A.P.S.
We report to you some statistics for 2017: VACATION WATCH Homes Inspected.............................4,390 Unlocked Windows..............................59 Unlocked Doors......................................6 Water Leaks..........................................27 Inspection Days..................................103 EVENING PATROL Open Garage Doors.........................1,253 Street Lights Burned Out...................389 Patrol Teams.......................................440 Nights Patrolled..................................198 Police Calls...........................................53
Our Evening Patrol dispatchers contact APS for street light replacements so your street is safe for night time walking and driving. Our house inspectors remove business cards tucked in your front door and newspapers on your driveway. We call your key holder for any security issues while you are away from your SCG home. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers are “neighbors helping neighbors”, our fellow-homeowners. C.H.A.P.S. could always do more in 2018, but we need your help. You can make a difference. If you would like to join C.H.A.P.S. come to our next general meeting at the Sonoran Plaza on Tuesday, February 27 at 1:30 P.M. New volunteers are always welcome.
C.H.A.P.S. meets next on Tuesday, February 27 at 1:30 P.M. in the Sonoran Plaza. EVERYONE IS WELCOME. Make a difference with C.H.A.P.S.

WEEDS Friendly Reminder from Standards
We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list.Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

A madcap romp around the tap room of Quail Valley golf Club revolves around the Annual inter-club Golf Tournament between Quail Valley and their archrivals, Crouching Squirrel, in which the latter has triumphed for the last five years. With his job on the line, Quail Valley Director Henry Bingham has enrolled a scratcher golfer named Tramplemaine, only to have the guy quit the day before the match and join Crouching Squirrel. To add to Bingham’s worries is a bet he has placed for $200,000 thousand dollars (plus his wife’s antique shop) with Crouching Squirrel Director Dickie Bell, the master of the malapropos and wearer of the ugliest golf sweaters on the planet. Upon learning that his newly hired assistant Justin Hicks is a golfer in the same category as Tramplemaine, Bingham immediately signs him up and sends him out to play, with much success. Matters are complicated by Justin’s new fiancé Louise losing her engagement ring and the untimely arrival of Muriel Bingham, who discovers her husband embracing the comely Crouching Squirrel Vice-President Pamela, Bells formal wife. Needless to say, the ending, while satisfying, stretches our credulity and ties everything up neatly, just as a farcical ending should.

It’s better to eat Twinkies with friends than broccoli alone! Did you know that eating (and drinking) with friends will lower your heart rate and boost your endorphins, contributing to a longer life? On the flip side, social isolation has been proven to be more harmful to your heart than smoking eight cigarettes a day. So eat the Twinkies!

Non-members may be allowed to participate by contacting the Hike Director at hikedirector@ scghikers.org Carpool fee $4. Entry/parking fees $6 shared by all riders. FEBRUARY 28 • WEDNESDAY • DEMOCRATIC INTEREST GROUP MEET U.S. SENATE CANDIDATES DEEDRA ABBOUD, CHRISTOPHER RUSSELL, RICHARD SHERZAN AND KYRSTEN SINEMA Four candidates for the U.S. Senate will share their plans and priorities to serve Arizona in Washington, DC. They are: Deedra Abboud, Christopher Russell, Richard Sherzan and Kyrsten Sinema. Deedra Abboud is a Phoenix-based attorney and founder of the consulting firm, Global Institute of Solution Oriented Leadership. After 9/11, she launched and served as director of the Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ). Deedra graduated from Summit Law School in 2012 and practiced immigration and estate planning law for nearly five years before returning to community advocacy work during the 2016 election. http://deedra2018.com. Christopher Russell is an Army veteran, a husband, a father and a small town lawyer. His job has shown him how insurance companies and other large corporations have rigged the law in favor of themselves over ordinary citizens. The foundation of his practice is helping people fight battles they can’t fight themselves. As a rural Arizonan, he understands the diverse character of Arizona lands beyond Maricopa County. http://www.chrisrussellforsenate.com. Richard Sherzan was born in Mobile, Alabama and was a teacher and housing mediator. Before moving to Arizona, he served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1979 to 1981. He believes to win elections, the Democratic Party must offer the individual voter a platform that correctly reflects true democratic principles and values—the enhancement of the freedom, dignity, security and happiness of the individual. Kyrsten Sinema knows what it means to struggle just to meet the most basic needs. For three years, her family lived in an old gas station with no electricity or running water. Sinema became a social worker helping families to cope and grow. She is still committed to helping people succeed. She was elected to the Arizona House and Senate. In 2011, the Arizona Republic said she had “remarkable” ability to “partner with Republicans in both the House and Senate” to pass legislation while remaining a “defender of key Democratic priorities.” As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, she has served the people of Arizona conscientiously since January 2013. In September 2014, she was endorsed for re-election by the US Chamber of Commerce. http:// kyrstensinema.com.Join us to hear from these candidates on Feb 28. MUSIC AL FRESCO II AT THE SCG AMPITHEATER
Come and join the SCG Music Club as they present an evening of music under the stars at the beautiful SCG Amphitheater. There will be a variety of music – folk, 50’s/60’s, oldies, light classical and Broadway show tunes. Bring a lawn chair (or just a blanket) and enjoy the terraced Amphitheater. The Amphitheater is located behind the Adobe Fitness Center and just east of the Bocce/ Lawn Bowling area. HOPILAND We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee & goodies, on our way to historic Cameron’s Trading Post for lunch on you own. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’re headed for the Desert View Entrance of the Grand Canyon. This lesser known east entrance to the Grand Canyon is part of the South Rim, but less accessible, and much less visited by tourists. We’ll stop first at the iconic Desert View Watchtower, where the panoramic view stretches out 100 miles, to include the Painted Desert, the North Rim and the Colorado River. Afterwards we’ll loop our way back and exit the Grand Canyon at the East end, headed for Tuba City—the Western Gateway to Hopi and home of The Moenkopi Hotel. This is the first hotel built on Hopi tribal land in 50 years and was the inspiration of the Elders of Upper Village of Moenkopi. After checking into this lovely hotel, we’ll take a minute to refresh, and then we’ll head into Tuba City for dinner on your own. We’ll enjoy breakfast, included, at the hotel, before meeting our Hopi guide, Gary Tso. Gary is without a doubt, our favorite tour guide! Gary will jump in the bus with us and take us into the villages throughout Hopi Land. Gary will take us through these living villages—the original homes are still intact and have been continuously occupied for centuries. Later we’ll stop for lunch on self at the Hopi visitor’s center, where the menu offers both American favorites and traditional Native American dishes. After touring the Hopi villages, we’ll return to our hotel and refresh before dinner on your own and a free evening. We’ll enjoy breakfast included at the hotel, and after breakfast it’s bags, back on the bus headed south on scenic Highway 89, headed for historic downtown Flagstaff. We’ll enjoy lunch on your own f in 66

CHACO CANYON NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK The very remote Chaco site of northwest New Mexico has the largest, best preserved and architecturally advanced of all ancient Southwestern villages, equal in importance to Mesa Verde in Colorado and although lacking the dramatic cliff alcove setting, the ruins here are made more evocative by the great desolation and emptiness of the surrounding countryside. But for 300 years the Anasazi Chacoan villages - most based on a single walled enclosure with hundreds of inter-linked rooms known as a great house, were at the center of a network of roads and outlying settlements that extended 100 miles to the south, west and north, and include a few others also well preserved today like Aztec Ruins near Farmington. $399/person | Bus Departs Sonoran Parking Area

CANYON DE CHELLY Day One: We’ll head towards Payson, with a stop for coffee and goodies, on our way to Winslow, Arizona and the La Posada Hotel. Built in the 1920’s, the La Posada is Fred Harvey’s last great railroad hotel and home to the James Beard award winning Turquoise Room. Considered by many to be the best restaurant in the Four Corners region, we’ll enjoy lunch on self at the Turquoise Room, where the menu offers something for everyone, and lunch prices run from $8 to $13. After lunch it’s back on the bus, and we’ll enjoy a sightseeing drive through the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert. Later we’ll make our way to Canyon de Chelly, pronounced canyon duh shay, where we’ll check into the Thunderbird Lodge. Owned and operated by the Navajo Nation, the historic Thunderbird Lodge will be our cozy headquarters for the next two nights. We’ll take some time for a refresh before heading to the hotel restaurant for dinner on self. After dinner we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Two: We’ll enjoy breakfast at the hotel on self. After breakfast jeeps will arrive to take us on a half day tour of Canyon de Chelly. points of interest. Heavy duty six wheel drive touring vehicles are equipped with padded seats to provide a good experience. The tours stop frequently for photo opportunities, to visit ancient sites, Navajo farms and rock art. When the tour is over we’ll head back to the hotel for a late lunch, on self, and a brief rest. Later we’ll pile back in the bus to do some of our own exploration of the region. We’ll visit both the North and South Rim of Canyon de Chelly and we’ll experience the sunset highlighting Spider Rock. Later we’ll return to the hotel. We’ll refresh, enjoy dinner on self, and a free evening. Day Three: Breakfast is on self at the hotel. After breakfast its bags out, and we’ll head towards the Hubbell Trading Post, the oldest, continuously operating trading post on the Navajo Nation. We’ll take some time to explore this authentic Indian trading post and original 160 acre homestead. Later we’ll stop by the Red Onion for lunch on self. Famous for their cheeseburgers, the Red Onion’s affordable menu also offers a variety of delicious sandwiches and fresh salads. From here we’ll hightail it for home through Arizona’s magnificent Rim Country. This is a fantastic springtime tour. Don’t miss it! $499/person | Bus Departs Sonoran Parking Area

GRAND LEARNING Information and Registration at 623-546-7470 or grandlearning.org SPRING REGISTRATION Spring course registration is off to a great start. However, I hate being the bearer of sad tidings when a course is full. We have courses that meet for numerous (think 12) weeks and in the path of people’s lives they can’t make it to all the classes. That leaves us with empty seats that someone would love to have. We are going to try a little experiment with the Hidden Gems class…if you were not able to get into Hidden Gems, you are welcome to come the day of class and pay-asyou-go. It will cost you $5 per session which you can pay at the door. This is not a guarantee that you will get into all the classes, but it might get you into most of them. “LOOK UP!” We have two courses looking up…literally. Archeoastronomy (with Lou-ellen Finter) looks at the way ancient cultures looked at the heavens and what those cultures did to try to understand the skies and incorporate that knowledge into their lives. Our other Astronomy course (with Joe Aibinder) is a bit more traditional and science based, but still a great opportunity for those with their heads in the stars. HEALTHCARE DISCUSSION Given the instant communications in our world today, and the huge amount of activity in our political stories, several topics rise above others. Healthcare is an ongoing debate and Winnie Fritz will give her informed view on how our system does or doesn’t work. Landmark Supreme Court Cases will look at the role of the Judiciary, and Great Decisions with Dr. Bonnie Saunders will examine how the US fits into foreign affairs. MAKE SOME MUSIC You know that guitar sitting in the corner of your closet? Now’s the time to take it out and make a little music. You have two instructors to choose from. You can Play a Guitar and Sing a Song or learn about the First Three Strings. Have you heard Lou-Ellen Finter talk about the Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofe? It’s soaring melodies and diverse themes make this a fun piece of music that mirrors the visual images we have all seen. REVIEW THE CLASSES OFFERED Of course, those are only a few of the great classes we offer this semester. Check out our catalogs…available in Chaparral, Sonoran, Palms, Chaparral, and the Adobe Centers. Or stay home and “shop” online at grandlearning.org. Register with a cup of coffee in the comfort of your own home. SEARCHING FOR A BOOK CLUB? “I’m having a hard time finding a book club.” We find that Book Clubs are very popular among Grand Learning students…but for someone new to the Grand it may be a daunting task to find a group that is willing to take new members. If you are a book club wannabee or a book club looking for some new blood, give us a call and we will try to connect the interested parties. Be prepared to tell us if your club (or you) have a particular genre in mind, such as History, or Cozy Mysteries, etc., how often you meet, and contact information. The bigger the response we get, the more likely that you can find the Grand Lifestyles | February 2018 | grandinfo.com
right fit. See the link on the Grand Learning home page… grandlearning.org
BOOK PUBLISHING INFO Or do you have a story to tell? We have classes that will help you write your story (two instructors offering four classes), help you publish your book, write press releases and market it to your audience. See the Grand Learning Reading & Writing section of the catalog (starting on p. 28) for details. AMBASSADORS Grand Learning is happy to welcome two men into the ranks of our Ambassadors. We are always looking for new Ambassadors - people who are willing to commit half an hour to check off names, hand out papers, and introduce instructors. But if you are particularly comfortable with using a computer, we could also use some help with registrations. DO YOU HAVE A NEW EMAIL? As someone who moved into a new (to me) Grand home last spring, I was once again required to notify what seemed to be everyone in the world that I had a new address. Of course, that means I forgot that when I got a new e-mail (because my old mailbox was filled with Spam! or it could be when you change providers) that I needed to pass that along, too. We deliberately don’t send many e-mails, but we do send them when we think they are important. Two examples: when you complete enrollment in classes, or a reminder that the class you registered for back in January is only a day or two away. So keep us in mind when you get a new e-mail or drop that old land line. PASSWORD TIPS Another thing that we find is a common problem is the “forgotten password”. The latest recommendation is to have one L..o..n..g..p..a..s..s ..w..o..r..d (actually a phrase like: ICanNeverRememberMyPasswords) that you can remember for all your web pages…here at Grand Learning we can reset your password, but we can’t see what your old one was. Of course, you can reset it yourself, too. But please do that instead of creating a new account. Call us at 623-546-7470, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm.

FROM THE SOFTBALL CLUB
Christmas Holiday Softball Tournament-2017 The Sun City Grand Slugger’s through the generosity of the Softball Club members and guests raised a total of $6,882 in our annual Christmas Holiday Softball tournament that will benefit the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” in Surprise, AZ.
It took many volunteers to help make this event happen! Work begins before the first pitch is thrown. The day prior to the tournament, Buck Rapley, Jim Opyd, Dave Stehle, Bob Boche and Norm Lustig worked tirelessly to make sure the Del Webb Memorial “Field of Dreams” was ready for play. Early morning on tournament day saw the setup crew of Brian Holliday, Dave Booth and Mike Wunsch set up tables for the Silent Auction, Raffle Table and refreshment area. There were over 90 “Silent Auction” items available for bids which were gathered by donation solicitors (Ski Lewandowski, Mick McKean, Jackie Couzens, Bob Aiken, Dick Stuckey and Dick Moore) who contacted local merchants for donations for the auction. Char Wheeler, Long Realty also provided auction items. A big “Thank You” to all the businesses that contributed items for our auction and raffle! The “Silent Auction” was run flawlessly by Ellie Manders and Linda Aiken. Judy Palzer, Barb Zech and Barb Clark worked 76
selling Raffle tickets for 6 beautiful Gift Baskets provided by Realtors Treedah Magee - Re/Max Professionals, Heather Van Peursem-Long Realty & Jackie Couzens. Before the first pitch, our National Anthem was played as players were acknowledged and lined the 1st & 3rd base lines. Our tournament announcers, Roger Neumann and Kandi Patrick brought the fans in the stands excellent play-by play providing humor and music between pitches; challenging fans to guess the names of selected music. Roger & Kandi also levied fines for good as well as inferior play. All in fun! Mark Jessen ran the scoreboard for all four games. Umpires included Marilyn Leinberger, Roy Sours, Harvey Gordon, Bob Dye, Norm Volk, Coral Estes, Jules Nagy & Jim Young. Everybody did a fantastic job! Serving refreshments of coffee, donuts, hotdogs and chips were Linda Ladd & Mary Kay Heitman. Hot Dog chefs were Lamar Forque and Bob Aiken. Howard Sumner was our tournament Photographer.
Team Managers were Jeff Smith (Red Cells), Bob Labreche (Lymph Nodes), Ernie Huxhold (Chemos) and Tom Ranalls (White Cells). Cancer Survivors made up over 50% of player participants. Thanks to Realtors Tom & Kris Ranalls for Team sponsorship providing “Strike out Cancer” T-shirts. When the dust cleared, the winning team was Tom Ranalls White Cells defeating Jeff Smith’s Red Cells by a score of 13 to 11. Consolation winner was Bob Labreche’s Lymph Nodes. As you can see, it takes a lot of coordination assembling all the teams and volunteers to have a successful event. Kudos to Norris Carpenter for being the associate tournament czar. Cleanup went smoothly with the help of Dave Fusaro and Ski Lewandowski. My only regret will be missing anybody that helped with the tournament. I apologize if I goofed in that regard. Thanks Don Ross for creating our tournament flyer & JJ Bigelow’s placement in Grand Lifestyles. Jim Palzer, Chair

Rosemary Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a very popular planting in Sun City Grand and with good reason. This plant will tolerant our heat as well as the few frosty nights that are not uncommon to the valley. It is a relatively draught tolerant
once it has been established. Rosemary will grow to a height of 5 feet and just as wide if allowed to grow to its natural shape and form. There are two forms, the prostrate and the upright, with the prostrate or trailing being the most popular choice. The name Rosemary was derived from Rosmarinus which translates as (dew of the sea) and the rolling dark green foliage with the light blue flowers remind some of the sea waves with a blue mist. The Rosemary growing outside your door can be not only has a pleasant odor but can be used in the kitchen to help spice a poultry dish or add a bit of unique flavor to pork.
Beliefs and Uses
The Chinese believed that Rosemary would ward off headaches. The Greeks

said that this plant would aid in liver heath and could even cure baldness. The Rosemary is called the friendship plant and would help improve your memory. A wreath made from Rosemary was worn on the day of your wedding in hopes that it would aid in the memory of the wedding vows. Weather it signifies friendship, helps in the memory process, or grows hair, or flavors our food at the table, it deserves a place in our landscape.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
PHOTO STORAGE solutions Dear Cappie, I have hundreds of photos now that I use my smartphone to take pictures. What’s a good way to organize and store them? I’m overwhelmed! A Sun City Grand Resident Dear Resident of Sun City Grand, As we take more and more photos with our smartphones and tablets, there definitely is a need for good photo management and storage options. Let me begin by stating that both the Android and iPhone’s own photo apps provide some very good organizational features as well as cloud storage options. The new Google Photos App for Android devices (also a downloadable app in the Apple Store for iOS iPads and iPhones) is especially simple to use. It gives you unlimited free cloud storage on the Google Drive and across-devices syncing for your photos (with minimal compression). The app can be set to automatically back up and sync every photo you take. Photos are displayed in the app by date taken. A smart-assistant feature can help you create albums, collages, grouped photo stories, animated photos, etc. The "visual search" feature is especially helpful in that it works also on unlabeled and untagged photos. You can search by People and Pets,
80
Places, Things, Videos, Collages, Animations and Movies. There are also some simple editing tools (cropping, brightness, color filters, etc.) to fix photos. The iOS Photos App also displays photos by date taken, as well as Favorites, Favorite Memories, People, Places, Videos, Selfies, Live Photos, Panoramas, TimeLapse, Screen shots, your own personally created albums, and much more. The photo editing app is quite a bit more robust than the Google Photo App and the Memories tab of the iOS Photos App groups themed photos and videos together, adds music, and creates fantastic short videos. Its search feature searches by category, date, place, and person. Apple’s iCloud storage gives you 5 GB of free storage; and if you run out of room, you can purchase 50 GB for .99 cents per month, 200 GB for $2.99 per month and 2 TB for $9.99 per month. If you are an Amazon Prime subscriber, Amazon offers a Prime Photos App—a cloud storage and photo manager for both iOS and
Android devices. Prime Photos provides unlimited cloud storage of your original resolution photos, and 5GB for video and document storage. The app automatically syncs so your photos can be accessed from any device with a connection, and the app includes organizational features and AI-assisted (artificial intelligence) search abilities. Prime Photos includes family sharing features, allowing you to share your unlimited photo storage with up to 5 family members (by invitation), and it also has a new shared Family Vault. The Family Vault lets Amazon Prime members set up a photo collection archive where multiple users can contribute photos and videos in one place. You will have to enroll in a $99-a-year Amazon Prime subscription to use the storage and app. Flickr is another photo storage and organizing app still highly recommended (available for both Android and iOS). It has been updated and revitalized to work on mobile devices as well as PCs. Flickr offers users 1TB of
free cloud storage to manage and organize mobile photos as well as images taken with traditional cameras. Flickr includes automatic uploading, as well as smart search features (like those mentioned above) which is time saving in that you do not have to manually tag every photo. The default Camera Roll view automatically groups your photos by date. It has the usual social features which allow you to share your photos as well as keep track of images shared by your family and friends. If your prime objective is photo sharing and you are an avid Facebook user, download Facebook's Moments photo sharing app for both Android and iOS. It is simple to use to share photos of your favorite memories and events with friends and family. Moments groups your photos together based on when they were taken and uses facial recognition algorithms to tell which of your friends are in each photo. The app includes search tools to find both you and your friends, supports full resolution photos, and offers free unlimited storage.
Grand Lifestyles | February 2018 | grandinfo.com
For more professional approaches to organizing and editing your photos, there is Elements Organizer (part of Adobe Elements Editor program), which organizes photos and videos on your PC or laptop by the places they were taken, the events they depict, albums, and favorites; and Lightroom CC—also from Adobe—organizes your photos into one large, searchable catalog, and offers a wide range of image adjustments, enhancements and one-click presets. As of December 2017, the non-subscription version of the Lightroom App has been discontinued and you are now tied to the Adobe
Creative Cloud which is a yearly paid subscription. Your photos are stored in the cloud on Adobe’s servers, rather than locally on your own computer or hard drives. Your pictures are available everywhere and on every platform from tablet to PC to smartphone. (You can, however, add your own PC or external drive, to also store the duplicated images). These are just a few of the organizing and editing options available. Arizona Renaissance Festival
Don’t miss Raucous Revelry at the Annual Arizona Renaissance Festival! The Arizona Renaissance Festival is a medieval amusement park, a 13-stage theater, a 30acre circus, an arts and crafts fair, a jousting tournament and a feast -- all rolled into one non-stop, day-long family adventure. You never know what you will find on or off the stage! This unique outdoor event combines entertainment and wares reminiscent of what may have been found in a 16th Century European village market celebrating the arrival of the King and Queen to their shire. Walk through the gates to be transported back in time. Mingle with over 2,000 costumed characters, eat a giant roasted turkey leg; take part in games of chance and skill; cheer on your favorite knight; select a handcrafted rose for that special someone... so much to see and do. Eat Drink and be Merry is the order of the day at the Village of Fairhaven. In addition to Saturdays and Sundays, the festival is open Presidents’ Day, Monday February 19th. Beginning February 10th, Recurring weekly on Saturday and Sunday, 10am-6pm. 12601 East Highway 60, Gold Canyon, AZ. 520-463-2600, www.arizona.renfestinfo.com.
