FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
Our Commitment to Energy Resource Management Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager
A major part of our Energy Conservation Initiative at Sun City Grand relates to the conversion of older and less efficient lighting systems to a more modern and efficient system utilizing solid state technology (LEDs). The lighting conversion will be addressed in two stages: the first being outdoor lighting which includes parking, recreational and pathways; the second interior lighting of all Association owned buildings. The Board of Directors approved the proposal to convert the outdoor lighting at their September 8, 2016 meeting. The conversion to LED
lighting will commence the second week of October. We expect stage two, the conversion of the interior lighting, will be presented to the Board of Directors for approval in the first quarter of 2017. Widespread use of LED lighting has the greatest potential impact on energy savings in the United States. By 2027, widespread use of LEDs could save up to 348 TWh (terawatt hours) for a given period, typically a year of major energy production or consumption. This value is equivalent to the annual electrical output of 44 large electric power plants (1000 megawatts each); a total savings of more than $30 billion at the current cost of electricity. The lighting conversion is essentially a change from a metal halide lamp to LED in almost every outdoor location. Metal halide lamps start with high lumen output but quickly
depreciate in output. The lighting output declines continually from the moment power is applied to the new lamp. When the metal halide bulb reaches 40% of its rated life, the bulb has lost approximately 30-40% of light output and as low as 40% of its initial lumens. Also, the intense heat given off by the metal bulb is an indication of the lack of efficiency in converting electrical power to light. For this reason, LED lighting is able to use light and energy more efficiently in many applications. LED lighting products use light emitting diodes to produce light very efficiently. When an electrical current passes through a semiconductor material, it illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs. Since LEDs are solid state they create much less heat than a typical lighting product which translates into an extended fixture life; typically six times longer. LED lighting fades very slowly over time. A well designed LED lighting fixture typically retains 70% of their initial output up to 100,000 hours of use. Since LEDs are electronic and do not have filaments to fail they are more reliable and do not create as much heat during operation. Ninety-five % of the energy in LEDs is converted into light
Conversation with Ken
The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Conversation with Ken will be on October 19 at 6 p.m. in the Palm Center.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
in the desired direction, rather than dispersing light in all directions like a metal halide lamp. The LED option is not only cost effective but has less environmental impact than other alternatives. The energy consumption of the LEDs for our stage one proposal are 50-80% more efficient than the existing metal halide lamps. Less energy use reduces the demand from power plants and decreases greenhouse gas emissions. We expect the return on investment for the outdoor LED lighting to be about 6.5 years; once the initial cost of the fixtures and labor is paid for we will be able to maximize the savings from this conversion. The estimated APS Energy rebate is $39,574 which is applied for when the installation is complete; rebates are paid approximately 3 months after the application is made. Conservation of our resources is the responsibility of not only individuals but also corporations, the government and non-profit organizations like our Sun City Grand Community Association. The Board of Directors and the
and only 5% is wasted as heat. As stated earlier, the lower heat output is directly correlated to the efficiency of turning electrical power into light. Also, LEDs are inherently directional since they emit almost all of their light output
community has made the commitment to conserve water and energy along with the saving of resources through our recycling program; a responsible and commendable approach to resource management for our community!

Among its responsibilities: n to assure projects and new ideas align with the Board’s Strategic Plan. n review issues relevant to Chartered Club and Interest Groups. n consider new or changes in existing amenities that would enhance the lifestyle of current residents and attract future residents.
14
consider new amenities and programs that will enhance the quality of life to residents planning to live here as long as they can. n consider lifestyle issues brought forward to the Committee by residents. n
Starting its work in November, 2015 the Committee has reviewed a number of concerns/issues. Among its actions it: n Reviewed a study of other similar agerestricted communities in the Valley to become familiar with their amenities and lifestyle activities n Developed a list of services to assist those who wish to stay in their homes as long as feasible—“living life fully,” a term adopted by the LAC and the Strategic Planning Committee. This list will be published in the Resource Guide now to be printed annually beginning in 2017. n Reviewed and incorporated into SCG procedures a formal Project Development Process for presenting new project ideas, with a deliberation and feedback process. Instructions and forms for this are on the website along with a ‘map’ to help track the movement of proposals. This process has been approved by the Board.
Put on hold its deliberations of several requests related to space needs until the Strategic Plan has been adopted and a space use consultant presents its report. n Revised and updated the Chartered Club Policies and Procedures as well as the Interest Group Guidelines and recommended them to the Board. n Other examples of items reviewed are installation of dimmers in various rooms for flexibility, better use of lighting and cost savings; improvement of curb visibility and landscaping in the markers throughout SCG; installation of 15 automatic door openers throughout the community and of a PA system at the Adobe Fitness Center. n
These are only some of the issues, ideas and concerns addressed by the Committee. PLEASE NOTE: we encourage residents to bring forward proposed projects that may enhance SCG’s lifestyle. The process and instructions for doing this is called the Project Development Process (above), now on the website for your access. We encourage your ideas and your attendance at our meetings held the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 1:00 and your ideas and feedback on the lifestyle we enjoy in SCG.

WE NEED JEFF GORDON . . . OR YOU Submitted by BOB RICHARDS C.H.A.P.S. Board Member
I was reading not too long ago that NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon retired from the NASCAR racing circuit. Now I barely know any difference between NASCAR and Kiddie-Car, but I do know from the sports pages that Jeff Gordon is an honored and champion NASCAR driver. So I started to wonder. Like most of us at Sun City Grand, Jeff Gordon is retired with extra time on his hands. Could he
possibly drive for C.H.A.P.S.? It takes our volunteers two hours to drive a 22 mile Evening Patrol route. Jeff Gordon could probably drive the same route in 9 or 10 minutes!
and move into Sun City Grand, our premier resort community. I think that would be the easy part. We have a great community here. Still, he might retire elsewhere. That’s why we need you! You can drive for C.H.A.P.S. Vacation Watch or Evening Patrol or both. No professional driving experience needed, just a desire to help your fellow-residents be safe and secure in our community. You are invited to our next C.H.A.P.S. general meeting on Tuesday, October 25 at 1:30 P.M. at the Sonoran Plaza. Come drive with us.
I suppose there are some road blocks, however. Surprise Police are still going to demand we observe our 25/35 mph speed limits. Jeff Gordon would have to slow down a bit. Unless he really likes that “box” look, our 116,000 mile Scion probably has a little less glamour than what he usually drives on the race track. And he would have to buy a home here

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
Meet Your Neighbors Ted and Marietta Johns Barbara Foster Executive Director, The Colonnade 623-236-3700
Those of us with a few grey hairs frequently hear the phrase, “Live your life to the fullest,” so much so that it can begin sounding like a commercial from a pharmaceutical company peddling its latest wonder drug. But when I meet people who truly have lived and are living their lives with purpose and joy, it reopens my eyes to the possibilities that it can be done. Ted and Marietta Johns are sterling examples of people who understand that life’s purpose is as Eleanor Roosevelt said: “…to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” “We’ve had many awesome experiences,” Marietta says, her azure eyes shining as she looks back on her life with Ted, which includes 55 years of marriage. “We’ve loved what we’ve done.” What they’ve done could easily fill this magazine. Ted served as a Lutheran minister and senior pastor for more than 40 years at several locations around the U.S., including Phoenix. He filled many roles over the course of his career but he especially enjoyed counseling those in need and coordinating evangelism at Mt. Olivet, in Minneapolis, the largest Lutheran church in the U.S. Marietta worked as an elementary-school music teacher for ten years but when school budget cuts led to art and music education 20
cuts, she made a 180-degree turn into financial planning. Always a quick learner, she rose through the financialplanning ranks at American Express, eventually becoming a senior vice president and the most senior female head of sales for AMEX worldwide, a job that took her and the family to London to live. Amidst all of this activity, they raised two daughters and a son, and now have eight grandchildren. Family is a vital part of their lives. More on that later. During their London period, Ted served as vice president of Eastern European Operations for Children’s Aid International, then focused on helping children in the Ukraine, Belarus and Russia who were adversely affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power-plant disaster. Ted and Marietta, who met as college students at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, both took early retirement in 2001, but it was hardly your typical retirement. “We felt blessed and knew we wanted to give back,” Ted says. After researching numerous volunteer options, they chose Opportunity International, a large not-for-profit that gives micro-finance loans to the poorest of the poor in thirdworld countries. As volunteers and ambassadors they traveled extensively for 14 years serving the poor all over the world, before scaling back in the past few years. Today, they continue to live full lives by singing in both the Sun City Grand Singers and Chorale, volunteering for Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in
Carefree, Arizona and by participating in numerous activities at The Colonnade and Lord Of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West. They cherish spending time with their children’s families and extended family. Every summer, the family gathers for fun and renewal at Lake LBJ in the Texas Hill Country outside of Austin, where the family owns a lakeside retreat. Ted and Marietta knew that when the time came, they wanted to live in a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), a lifestyle that both their mothers and several of their siblings had chosen. They researched 18 different continuing care retirement communities around the U.S., including four in Arizona before settling on The Colonnade. “We love the whole concept of The Colonnade,” Marietta says. “We like the fact that it’s a not-for-profit community. Then, there’s our beautiful independent-living apartment, the scenic grounds, the healthy, delicious meals, the professional and friendly employees, the lifelong learning opportunities, the peace of mind with Life Care options and the many new friends we’ve made.” Despite their action-packed life, the Johns seem remarkably down to earth, humble and at peace with whatever life brings. “We always tell our kids that whatever happens to us, don’t feel bad because we have been fortunate to have loved and lived life to the fullest,” Marietta says.

FROM THE Softball League 2016 Summer Season
SOFTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPION RELIANCE PEST MANAGEMENT Submitted by Ron Underwood
The Sun City Grand Softball Club concluded its 2016 summer weekday season on September 16th. This is the least busy of the softball club’s four playing seasons as many of our club members seek cooler weather elsewhere at this time. However, five teams of 11 players played some 20 games during the season. Thirty additional players were available on the substitute list. Each of the five teams were evenly matched and the Reliance Pest Management sponsored team won the season with a record of 14 wins, 3 losses and 3 ties. Team manager John Boland congratulated his team for an incredible season. This team had a rock solid battery of Wayne Siers and Mark Brenner. The
defense played stellar ball the entire season. The infielders locked down the competition and turned numerous double plays throughout the summer. The infielder’s from first to third are Mike Kuebler, Bob Craig, Skip Pavitt, Alan Dial and Bob Husick. Reeling in line drives, fly balls and getting the ball back to the cutoff fielder from the outfield were Diane Dial, Ed Campbell, John Boland and Bill Marchionni. The team was able to hold the competition to an average of 7 runs per game. That is an incredible and telling statistic. The team was always in every game and the pitching and defense secured wins even if our bats were not going well. Congratulations and thanks to all. John Boland gives a very special thank you to Mark Jessen, Butch

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
The Neuroscience of
Exercise for Active Seniors This month, one of our personal trainers, Charles Crevequer, offers a great article on the neuroscience of exercise. If interested in more information, Charles includes his contact information at the end of this article. I hope you are inspired to commit to your fitness by learning more about the neurological impact of an active vs. sedentary lifestyle.
Allison Adams Fitness Manager 623-546-7463 Allison.Adams@ scgcam.com
Being fluent in Latin as a result of a Salesian Catholic education, I was very early on introduced to the maxim “Mens sana in corpore sano.” We know the translation to be “A healthy mind in a healthy body,” and the Salesians who taught me encouraged the concept of scholar/athlete. At the time, I didn’t fully grasp the science behind this. I did know the ancient Greeks believed that a great part in human development was played by the region of our brain called the hippocampos. The shape of that region resembled a seahorse, hence hippos (horse) kampos (sea monster).
Fast forward about 50 years. Today I read more and more about advances in our knowledge of neuroscience and the brain. And I have come to appreciate the amazing physical properties of the 24
hippocampus and the highly important benefits exercise has on this organ. As a personal trainer and endurance athlete, I understand firsthand the value of exercise on my cognition and memory. If you’ve ever had to stop working out due to injury, illness, travel or from just being too busy, you know how rapidly you can lose muscle. And you probably notice that this effect increases with age. This loss of muscle is called sarcopenia. Coupled with muscle loss we can also lose bone density, called osteopenia. But have you ever considered that something similar could happen to your brain? It’s called Mild Cognitive Impairment, a precursor to dementia and Alzheimer’s. Recently researchers at the University of Maryland School of Public Health examined cerebral blood flow in healthy, physically fit older adults (ages 50 to 80 years) before and after a 10-day period during which they ceased all exercise. You may be as surprised by their findings as I was. Through the use of MRI brain imaging techniques, researchers found there was a significant decrease in blood flow to several brain regions, including the hippocampus, relatively soon after people stopped their exercise routines. “We know that the hippocampus plays an important role in learning and memory and is one of the first brain regions to shrink in people with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. J. Carson Smith, associate professor of kinesiology and lead author of the study. “In rodents, the hippocampus responds to exercise training by increasing the growth of new blood vessels and new
neurons, and in older people exercise can help protect the hippocampus from shrinking. So it is significant that people who stopped exercising for only 10 days showed a decrease in brain blood flow in regions that are important for maintaining brain health.” There are a number of studies that have documented what de-training or stopping an exercise program will do to the metabolic system. People lose muscle, flexibility and coordination, gain weight and often see a rise in blood pressure. The researchers measured blood flow velocity in the brain with an MRI scan twice. To establish a baseline, the first scan was conducted while the individuals were following their regular training routine. After 10 days of no exercise, a second MRI was performed. It was demonstrated that resting cerebral blood flow significantly decreased in eight brain regions, including the areas of the left and right hippocampi and several regions known to be part of the brain’s “default mode network.” The DMN is a neural network known to deteriorate quickly with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
Grand Lifestyles | October 2016 | grandinfo.com
FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER It was not anticipated that the impact would be so significant in so many regions of the brain. At the same time, it is both alarming and encouraging that exercise can have such an effect. When you are training, you are directly affecting those brain regions in a positive manner. This information adds to the growing scientific understanding of the impact of physical activity on cognitive health. The less physically active you are, the more likely you are to have cognitive problems and dementia as you age.
So we are confronted by two choices: grow or decay. Notice I did not say aging. I believe aging is more hormonal and less impacted by exercise Decay is another word for inflammation, and the master chemical responsible for this is cytokine-6, or C-6. On the opposite side, the master chemical for repair and growth is cytokine-10, or C-10. C-6 is produced in both the muscle cells and the bloodstream in response to exercise, and C-10 is produced in response to C-6. This is the body’s brilliant mechanism for coupling decay and growth. C-6 actually
triggers the production of C-10. Decay triggers growth. The takeaway here is that we have to strive to stay active and healthy every single day, no matter how old we are. We need to achieve the same balance of growth and decay we had as children. We want to be younger next year, every year! If you have any questions that you would like me to address, text me on 623-3373558, email me at trixcellence@lycos.com or look for me at the SCG Cimarron or Adobe Fitness Centers.

Weeds
Friendly Reminder from Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list.Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

TAD’s Time in a Bottle
From Jim Croce to Dan Fogelberg, and Carole King to James Taylor, Time in a Bottle presents an unforgettable two hours of some of the greatest American music to come from the 1970s. From the end of the 1960s, it became common to divide mainstream rock music into soft and hard rock with both emerging as major genres of popular music. In the early ‘70s, rock music mellowed creating the distinctive, laid-back sound of soft rock. The smooth and easy feeling this music inspires is perfect for life’s most meaningful moments. Quite simply, these are the songs that just make you feel good! Time in a Bottle re-creates the best of the soft rock era rocking you gently with the hits of Jim Croce, Carole King, James Taylor, America, Dan Fogelberg, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot and many more amazing singer/songwriters. $18/person Front of House | $15/person Back of House 6:30 p.m. Cash Bar | 7 p.m. Performance | Sonoran Plaza

Cimarron Night Club – Pazzazz: A Classy New Trio in Town!
On occasion, the Nightclub likes to showcase new groups who we feel have great potential to succeed in the West Valley and beyond. The three ladies of Pazzazz are not new to entertaining - Linda Albright, Deb Dickey and Vicki Baker can all claim successes as solo artists or performing in musicals or with other groups. They do the music we love - standards from the 40's to the 80's - harmonizing as a trio or in duets or solos. This professional show is what Nightclubs used to be about - intimate surroundings and getting up close and personal with very talented singers. With their onstage charm and love of performing, they're excited to make their debut in our Nightclub and we think our patrons are going to love them. Event Coordinator, Didi Nielsen at 623-583-4406. Have you seen the new catalog? So many new classes…from Get a Grip on Your Balance (your body, not your financial portfolio!), to November 2016 Elections…there’s sure to be something for you! You can make some Classic American Cuisine with Amuse Bouche or learn how to Cook with Desert Plants. Learn what plants wildlife like so you can plan your yard to appeal to (or discourage!) the little nibblers. Or think ahead to your holiday shopping by attending our How to Buy a Tablet class. Then, take the Social Media class so you can keep in touch with family and friends. Catalogs are available in Chaparral, Sonoran, Cimarron, and the Adobe Spa. Or you can see it online at grandlearning.org.
Get Ready, Get Set, Go! Registration Information
You may register online at grandlearning.org or come to the Grand Learning office. If you don’t already have an account, why not create one now at www.grandlearning.org by clicking on Login/Register and follow the prompts to set up your own account. Classes begin on Monday, October 10th. And yes, you can register throughout the semester as long as there are seats remaining in the particular class you choose.
Fall Fest 2016
Grand Learning will be open and ready to welcome you during Fall Fest on October 8th. Come on by, see what we have to offer, grab a treat and say hi—we’re looking forward to seeing you!
We’re Already Looking Ahead to Spring… and you can be an important part!
We’ve heard some great ideas from our students and instructors, but we don’t always have an instructor to facilitate the class. If you have experience with Elderhostel, criminal defense or forensics and are willing to share your expertise, please stop by or give us a call—we’d love to have you join us! Of course, you may have another subject you wish to share—come on by and let’s chat. We are always looking for ways to expand our class offerings..
Registering Online
If you are having difficulty registering online, please do not create another account, please contact us. When paying online with a credit card, check your invoice to make sure you see a zero at the bottom. If the dollar amount still shows—you are not paid! See why your credit card didn’t process by scrolling down to the red print at the bottom of the page. Your credit card statement will show ASA online for payment of Grand Learning classes. Registration is complete only on an invoice, not in a shopping cart—look for an email confirmation of registration; and yes, you must register for free classes. Forget your password? Click on forgot password, and you will be instructed on resetting it. It may take up to 15 minutes to process, please be patient. Changed your email address? Notify us so we may set the system to accept the new email address.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
PHOTO SHARING TIPS Dear Cappie, I have hundreds of photos on my IPad, Android smartphone, computer hard drive, external drives, as well as posted to Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram. If I want to upgrade to a new phone or new computer, how can I make sure I don’t lose the photos? Is there any program where I can look at all my photos at once? Ron Dear Ron, To ensure your pictures stay with you no matter where they originated and to see/organize large photo collections in one place, the best solution is to upload your photos to a photo-sharing site. It is also a convenient way for friends and family to contribute their images to your shared albums. There are numerous sites available today that are both free or for pay. The right site will depend upon your specific needs. Cappie has three suggestions when looking at photo-sharing sites:
sharing site if it allows full-size uploads and downloads-- especially if you plan to print large-size copies of those images without loss of quality. Choose a site that allows you complete control over ownership and of who sees your photo albums (privacy). Most sites use password protection or allow you to send a web-link to others so they can view your images. Some also allow you to post photos to the public or to friends only.
Choose a site that includes automatic syncing from all your devices. Most photo sharing sites offer an app that you can download to your computer, tablet, and smartphone that will automatically sync (upload to the photo sharing site) the photos you take from that device or from a folder on your computer (instead of you having to manually upload the photos).
There are many new photo sharing sites (Eye-Fi Cloud, This Life, 500px, Cluster, etc.) that are very good, and some older very excellent standbys that have recently upgraded their product (Flickr, Google, Photobucket, Shutterfly, etc.). This month Cappie will discuss a few of the seasoned sites and what they have to offer. In a future column, the more recent photo sharing sites will be featured.
Choose a site that will upload the full resolution (higher pixel quality) of your photos. It is a plus for any photo
Flickr has some simple yet powerful photo editing options, including color filter effects, stickers, and frames-- in
addition to storage. If you don’t mind seeing a few advertisements, you can receive one terabyte of storage for free or pay $49.99 a year for ad-free version (the price also includes: stats on how photos are shared, free U.S. Shipping for Flickr prints, and 20% off Adobe’s Creative Cloud design editing apps) in addition to the free editing apps available with the program. There is no limit on the resolution of your images you upload. The site can hold anywhere from 500,000 to 2,000,000 of your photos. You can also upload 1080p high-definition video clips for playback of up to three minutes long. For sorting purposes, there are options to use keyword tags and to organize your photos into both collections and sub collections. You can also individually add or batch-process people tagging and keywords to your photos. You can sort by date taken or date uploaded, by keyword, by people tags or the new “magic view” in which Flickr organizes your photos by using image recognition software to divide pictures into surprisingly accurate categories. When you can’t remember when a photo was taken but you remember what it was, this method will allow you to find the image quickly. This sorting method places photos into categories like ‘Animals’ or ‘Landscape’ and then with sub-categories for further defining what the picture is, like ‘Cat’ or ‘Sunset.’
For more information about photo sharing on the web, classes in technology, social media, and more, visit the Grand Computers Club. The Club is located in the Chaparral Center. If you are a member and have a question about or problem with your computer, tablet, or smartphone, you can talk to a tech volunteer every Tuesday at 12:30 PM. Bring your device with you. Check out the club website: www. grandcomputers.org (note: our hours of operation are: Oct - Apr: 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, Mon thru Fri). View the digital version of Ask Cappie the Computer Cat Column by logging on to www.grandinfo.com . This month’s featured photo is Cappie’s brother, Tangelo.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
The Google+ photo app also offers numerous editing options and viewing options, including a slideshow view. The site offers unlimited free storage but it downsizes your original image. If you choose not to downsize, full-resolution photos count against the storage limit, which is 15GB of full-size pictures (and is shared with Google Drive and Gmail accounts); the for-pay version cost begins at $1.99/month for 100GB, up to $299.99/month for 30TB. As far as special features, there are many. Auto back up and location history will collate a “Story” slideshow of images based on when it thinks you’re on vacation. If you take similar photos in burst mode—the Assistant feature turns the images into a mini-animation GIF, viewable from the website. Another fun feature is the ability to collate “Rediscover this Day” --collections of photos snapped from years past. These features can be turned off in Settings. Photos can be uploaded from any device or computer via auto sync, and you can choose to make them
public or private. You can create albums and then email family/ friends a link to the album so they can view them. Photobucket offers automatic syncing, full-size uploads and downloads as well as editing options. It has its own photoprinting service to reproduce images for everything from framed prints, canvas wraps, and photo books to tee shirts and other accessories. You get 2 GB free, and then prices range from 22 GB for $2.99/month up to 500 GB for $39.99/ month. One issue with this site is that the Photobucket Terms of Use gives full rights to Photobucket to use your publically displayed photos in any way they want, including for commercial purposes-- if your privacy setting for a photo album is set to “Public”-- so Cappie suggests if you use Photobucket, change album privacy settings to “Private.” You can password-protect your private albums. Shutterfly offers unlimited free storage with no restrictions on the size of photos
uploaded. You can upload pictures directly from Facebook, Instagram, iPhoto, Google+ Photos and Adobe Photoshop or through iPad, iPhone or Android apps but there is no automatic photo syncing. You can send a link to the gallery via email or Facebook for family and friends to view. Anyone who can view your album can also order prints of the pictures in it. If using collaborative albums, you can create a “Share” microsite for group members to upload photos and share calendars, messages and polls. Shutterfly’s main business is selling its huge array of photo related merchandise: prints, photo canvases, metal prints, wooden wall art, stationary, crockery, lunch bags, puzzles and books, etc. Even if you don’t purchase any merchandise, Shutterfly is still a good option for organizing your photo collection online, and albums are private by default and sharing is limited to their members. In a future column, Cappie will review some of the newer popular photo-sharing sites.

The base grass on all 4 of the golf courses here at Sun City Grand is bermuda. Bermuda grass thrives in the hotter more humid months but not as well in the cooler months. Because of this, the courses put down over 225,000 pounds of grass seed. This brings the darker green color/aesthetics back while the bermuda grass becomes dormant and golden brown in color. Like last year, staff will be doing the following… 1. Staff will continue to use straight bluegrass on the greens. This will continue to allow staff to be more aggressive with the mowing heights after overseeding and allow for better rolling greens sooner. 2. Staff altered the overseeding closure dates to allow a better chance to have better weather during the overseeding process which will in turn give better playing conditions for our golfers. Staff will be starting the
54
overseeding process in October like last year versus starting in September in previous years. This year (similar to about 10 years ago and last year) there will be 9 days where golf will not be available. The schedule is posted on www. grandinfo.com under the Grand Golf/Calendars tab. The schedule is subject to change based on the current weather forecasts. Staff is working on having some events on the range while all of the courses are closed. More information will be posted in the golf shops and email blasted for those that are on the golf email blast.
Another question staff gets is, “Why do we not put seed in the divot sand?” About 9 years ago, staff conducted a test with seed in the mixture and without seed. We made some several divots similar in length, width and depth. We applied both of the mixtures to the divots. We found that the divots both filled in within the same time frame. The seed needs to maintain moisture in order for it to germinate and since it does not get constant water, it takes longer. We found that the healthy rye grass tillers out just as fast and fills in the divots. Also, by not using seed in the mixture kept rye grass from germinating in the non-overseeded areas.
As in years past, the golf courses will be cart path only for about 3 weeks after they open back up from overseeding. The purpose for this is to allow the young rye grass to get an opportunity to become more rigorous to be able to handle the upcoming cart traffic, play and divots. Everyone can help keep the courses in great shape by filling their divots with sand and repairing their ball marks on the greens. On a shotgun day, if you can take a few minutes on your last hole of play and fill as many divots as you can, this will keep our courses in great shape for the golfers behind you.

Arizona Rosewood
This Article was provided by
Mike Secrist from Gothic Grounds Management
Arizona Rosewood (Vauquelinia californica). This slow-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree is native to southern Arizona and Mexico, occurring at elevations of 2500 to 5000 feet. It resembles an oleander with the exception that it is not toxic and has serrated leaf margins. This can be a small tree growing to 25 feet or kept to a manageable height with regular shaping and pruning. As a desert native it grows well in full sun or partial shade and can handle poor soil conditions. Arizona Rosewood is a distant

relative to the rose and takes its name from red heart wood. The flowers are white, with 5 petals up to 1/4 wide. The flowers occur in dense white clusters on branch terminals, 2 to 3 inches across and blooming time is May through June. Arizona Rosewood is considered to be a slow grower after planting but will speed up slightly after it is established. It is very drought tolerant once it has become established and cold hardy to 20 degrees. If you are considering
a native plant to replace an Oleander, you might want to take a closer look at the Arizona Rosewood.
October Tip As the temperatures start to drop, it is time to complete any trimming that may need done while there is still time for some new growth to appear. Adjust and tune your irrigation schedule to compensate for the fall season.
