FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
I hope everyone is enjoying this holiday season. I continue to meet more residents as they return to Sun City Grand for the season and continue to be impressed with how much our residents love this community.
W. David Twiggs General Manager
It has been difficult for all of us as we try to express the hospitality, community spirit, and comradery that Sun City Grand is known for during these times of Covid restrictions and limitations. The community, members, clubs, and Cam services have been extremely forward thinking and cooperative in adjusting their operations to help minimize the spread of the virus. We have procedures in place to respond to positive cases in our facilities. These include letting other users know of possible exposure, sanitizing the locations, and returning to safe operations in as short a time possible. While the staff is doing their best to create the safest environments possible, we cannot assure complete safety during this time of pandemic. We are all ultimately responsible for our own health. Please use your masks and social distance. This is a very busy time for us while we close out 2020 and prepare for all the exciting projects in 2021. In last month’s issue I gave an overview of all the major projects underway. I want to thank our staff, all the committee members, and the Board of Directors for their diligent work in all these projects as well as the continued planning for the future. These projects require extensive preparation. There have been multiple surveys, town halls, and meetings to make sure that these projects meet the communities needs in the best way possible. These have also included market research and input from our partners such as Unidine to look for the best improvements to members services. I want to be sure that we communicate all that is being done so that you are aware of what is going on in your community. We have had tremendous response to our casual music nights and are looking to expand those. Music and Drama clubs are seeking unique way for providing more entertainment. While there are Covid limitations, we are seeking to offer opportunities to our members. We are always looking for your input on how to better serve you.
Thank you, David W. David Twiggs

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
ON COURSE ETIQUETTE:
IT’S EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
Golf course etiquette is an allencompassing term that refers to demeanor, adherence to course maintenance rules, and dress, among other issues. However, most associate golf course etiquette to the concept of ball mark repair, divot replacement and raking bunkers. Take a moment and consider what a course would look like if golfers were excused from any of these activities for just one day. A well-managed facility would look like a battlefield. Golf course personnel across the country are unanimous in stating that, as a whole, golfers still do not do an adequate job in repairing their ball marks and divots. Despite the presence of posters, notes in newsletters and announcements in meetings to serve as reminders, most facility managers believe the message can never be repeated too much.
WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
The basis for ball mark repair and divot 10
To fix ball marks on greens, start with your repair tool at 45 degrees opposite the flight of the ball. Then dig in and pry up toward the vertical. Work your way around all sides of the ball mark again, going in at 45 degrees and pushing up to the vertical. Tap the ball mark down level with the bottom of your putter. That's it. Note: Don't pry down on the tool trying to bring the bottom of the hole up. That creates a dead spot that affects the putting surface. With practice, you should be able to repair a mark so that it is totally invisible.
repairing the damage replacement is for competitive and agronomic reasons. Balls that land in unrepaired divots place a golfer at a disadvantage, just as having to putt over a ball mark. By leaving turf damaged (unrepaired), it becomes susceptible to disease and/or infestation of weeds, resulting in a lower quality of playing surface. This necessitates the need for attention by golf course superintendents and their staffs, thereby taking them away from more pressing duties. As a general rule, a ball mark repaired within 10 minutes will heal with a smooth surface within two to three days. An
unrepaired ball mark may take as long as three weeks to heal, but the result will be an uneven surface.
REPLACING DIVOTS
Most golfers take relatively shallow divots causing a lot of damage to the roots and replacing the divot will not allow it to re-grow. At Sun City Grand, we ask that you use the sand that is provided to fill the divot to make it level with the existing turf. This will help the divots to heal and also give a better surface for your fellow golfers to play out of if their ball happens to land in it.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
HEALTHY FROM THE INSIDE OUT Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Contributed by: Melissa Diluzio Certified Health Coach
For that last several months its’ been impossible to avoid the reality that we are living through a world health crisis most of us have never experienced before. Everywhere we go, everything we do, how we feel, sleep, worry and possibly eat is affected by the Coronavirus. My name is Melissa Diluzio. I am SCG resident and a Certified Health Coach. My passion is to help others improve their health. The advice we have been given to avoid or reduce our chances of becoming stricken with the virus is common sense. Social distance, wash our hands, cover our cough and stay home when sick. I would encourage everyone to be proactive and do more. My life and work revolve around actions we can take that actually improve our health, build our immune system and strengthen our ability to fight off the current virus as well as other health conditions. Educating my clients and students is what I love to 14
do. Normally this time of year I would be holding group classes in person at the Cimarron Center. However in light of our current situation, beginning in January, my classes will be offered via Zoom. Healthy food and lifestyle habits is where my focus of teaching is. Every day there are new food items tempting their way into our grocery cart. With all the fancy labels and marketing words, it has become more and more difficult to know if the food we are eating is actually good for us or not. Much our health is an “inside” job and it begins with what we eat. Did you know that food influences our immune system? For instance, sugar suppresses your immune system and the effects can last up to six hours! There is so much we can do to boost our immune system especially when it comes to food.
and contribute to allergies, auto-immune, heart disease, diabetes and more. We don’t have to sit home quietly and wait for things to get better. We can take charge of our health by upgrading our nutrition and taking action to strengthen our immune system so we are ready for 2021, regardless of what’s going on in the world. If you would like to learn more and get healthier in 2021, see the flyer in this article for more details. I hope to see you on Zoom next month. Classes begin Thursday January 21st.
Here’s what to expect. • There will be 4 classes, each is 45-50 minutes with 10 -15 minutes for questions. • Presented live on Zoom. Grab your coffee and learn from home. • Each class will be a Power Point presentation with time for interaction. • A digital copy of each class will be emailed to you so that you can print it at home or have it printed so you will have a permanent hard copy for future reference. To Your Health, Melissa Diluzio
Some of things I teach in my classes are: • How to decipher food labels. Food labels are extremely misleading. Identifying key marketing words helps make buying decisions easier. • Understanding Nutrition Facts. This is where they tell us much fat, carbs, fiber and protein the food has. I share a simple formula that helps you decide whether you want to eat it the food or not. • Recognizing toxic ingredients. Many of the foods we have been eating for years are actually toxic Grand Lifestyles | January 2021 | suncitygrand.com

FROM STANDARDS
COLOR SCHEME & PLACEMENT
An increasing number of residents have experienced issues with the proper placement of Base, Trim, and Accent colors required on the various ‘elevations” (architectural design of the
front) of the homes in the community. Many home models have more than one elevation for the same floorplan. In order to help make your painting project run smoothly, and to be
sure the color scheme and paint placement locations you have planned are definitely compliant with the Residential Design Guidelines, we strongly recommend that your painter come into the Standards Office to confirm both your planned color scheme and the required placement locations for the Base, Trim, and Accent colors on your particular model and elevation. This should always happen when you are considering changing to a different color scheme. It should also happen when you are simply having your house repainted using your existing
color scheme, because the paint placement may have been incorrect when the house was last painted, and merely painting it the identical color scheme with the same paint placement locations could result in a violation of the Residential Design Guidelines. Although ARC Applications are required for new color schemes only, Standards would like all contractors to stop in and confirm the color scheme and paint placement locations for all repainting jobs in order to avoid potential noncompliance citations and repainting requirements.

FROM THE WOODCRAFTERS CLUB
Showcase of Toys
Contributed by: Andy Tofil, SCG Resident Photos by: Andy Tofil, SCG Resident
Ok, so there wasn’t an “actual” Showcase of Toys this year. Due to Covid, the only “Showcase” was in the driveway of one of our toy makers, as we sorted the toys for distribution to 6 different charities. This year’s charities were: Charter Schools of Phoenix, Eve’s Place, Faith House (New Leaf), Operation “Angel Tree” at Luke AFB, St. Mary’s Foodbank, and St. Vincent Depaul (Dream Center). Even though our woodshop was closed until mid-August, we still managed to create almost 700 toys. With the help of some members of the Community
Service group and beaders of the Stitcher’s club and members of the Art club, many of the beautiful enhancements were added to our toy maker’s creations. By the first week of December, all toys were delivered to the appropriate charities. Because there wasn’t a “Show”, it was not possible to thank in person, all those who participated in the Toy Project (Grand Woodcrafters). I wish to convey my gratitude to all those who worked to make this project possible. I’m hoping that we were able to make this season a little brighter for some kids!
Hopefully, next season we will be able to have our actual Show!

Meets 1 time on Friday 1/15/2021 9:00 AM–11:00 AM FEE:: $10 Thomas Moran was one of the three major Rocky Mountain School of Art painters. He was not the only artist in the family. Two of his brothers, Edward and Peter, were also artists. One was a painter and the other a lithographer. In addition, his wife, Mary, was an etcher. She was so well regarded as an artist; she was elected to the Society of Painter-Etchers of New York. She was the only woman among the 65 original Fellows of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in London. We will first talk about the Rocky Mountain School of Art; what lead up to this art style, what were artists saying with this style, and how they said it in their paintings. The bulk of the presentation will be spent discussing the intertwined and separate lives of these four artists and, most importantly, their art. VICARIOUS TRAVELS: IRELAND THE EMERALD ISLE

The Manhattan Project was created based on the fear that the German war machine had been working on an atomic bomb since the 1930s and that Adolf Hitler was poised to use the bomb in Europe. Later revelations indicated that this was perhaps not the case. We will look at the history of the project, briefly review the German effort to develop the bomb, and provide an overview of stories related to the political reality of what was reported at the time. GRAND LEARNING POINTILLISM AND LES NABIS ALLEN REAMER
Meets 1 time on Friday 1/22/2021 9:00 AM–11:00 AM FEE: $10 Some consider these two art styles sub-sets of PostImpressionism. But, unlike Post-Impressionism where the unique styles of the famous four PostImpressionists determined the Post-Impressionist movement, Pointillism and Les Nabis each had an underlying principle and paint application method. Also, Pointillism and Les Nabis had a core group of artists who followed both the style’s principle and paint application. We will look at the founders and their followers, their lives and their art, and how each style was influenced by the Impressionists and by Gauguin. UKULELE 101 ZOOM JONI DEE

GINGERTALKS: THE STORY OF THE US NUCLEAR WEAPONS COMPLEX
THE BEATLES: THE SOLO YEARS
GINGER SWARTZ
Meets 1 time on Monday 2/01/2021 2:00 PM–4:00 PM FEE: $10 The lecture will continue in the footsteps of The Beatles story and focus on the highlights of the “solo” post-Beatles careers of John, Paul, George and Ringo. We will explore the aftermath of The Beatles legacy and how they established themselves as solo artists. Coming full circle, we will explore their last collaborative project “The Beatles Anthology” released in the late 90’s.
Meets 1 time on Wednesday 1/27/2021 11:00 AM–12:30 PM FEE: $10 This 90-minute presentation provides a brief overview of the original U.S. nuclear weapons complex mission, its history, personalities and current status of the complex itself. The program is an historical overview from the nuclear weapons' complex beginning in the Manhattan Project to its current role as the National Security Administration (NSA) housed in the U.S. Department of Energy. This program is intended for informational purposes only and created for the average person with no technical training. Presentation includes personal stories and perspectives based on the presenter's public experience in the nuclear waste element of the U.S. Weapons Complex. HOME AUTOMATION FOR BEGINNERS TONY SPATA
Meets 1 time on Wednesday 1/27/2021 2:00 PM–3:30 PM FEE: $5 Who hasn't heard of "Siri" or "Alexa", and used them in some manner? Google Assistant? Nest? Ring? The list of companies and components to automate your home continues to rapidly expand. But what does it take to truly integrate these parts-and-pieces into a comprehensive system to control air-conditioning, lighting and more? This presentation will provide a (mostly) non-technical explanation of what is required to literally control everything "from the palm of your hand". COLONIAL AMERICAN PAINTERS ALLEN REAMER
Meets 1 time on Friday 1/29/2021 9:00 AM–11:00 AM FEE: $10 Fredericksburg is rich in colonial and postcolonial history. It is depicted in its styled and folk architecture. This colonial era is also rich in painting. The painting and painters of this time, c.1630 to 1830, became passé and collectors and museums wanted European art. Not until the early 1930’s did art historians and later collectors begin to recognize the richness of this time. GRAND LEARNING GINGERTALKS: THE LITERARY ART OF BOB DYLAN: NOBEL LAUREATE GINGER SWARTZ
Meets 1 time on Tuesday 3/16/2021 2:00 PM–3:30 PM FEE: $10 Since Bob Dylan was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature, a debate has raged as to whether songwriting, as an art, can be defined as literature. The Swedish Academy declared that Dylan “created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” The Academy further noted that their choice was warranted partly because Bob Dylan “is the object of a steady stream of secondary literature.” In addition to his long and varied musical history, Dylan has published “Tarantula”, a 1971 collection of his poetry and “Chronicles: Volume One”, his 2004 self-styled memoir. Gerald Ford gave Richard Nixon a full pardon one month after taking office. Ronald Reagan on his first day in office announced the release of the diplomats being held by Iran. Barak Obama got Congress to pass the stimulus package 29 days into his first term. What will our next President accomplish during his first 100 days? How will his first 100 days be perceived by America, and the world? We will meet to discuss his successes and failures and what the future might hold. So if you are interested in politics, this is the class for you.

We recently provided an accounting of volunteer hours to our CAM management. We could not count 2020, since we were not in operation for several months. So, we thought we would share through this Lifestyles article how much your neighbors contribute to help keep our community the safe place it is to live. For the year 2019 our volunteers donated 966 hours in service providing support for Association events such as garage sales, newcomers’ coffees, fall fest, administration duties, and C.H.A.P.S.’ monthly general meetings attended by the full membership. Our two main functions are Evening Patrol, who served 1464 hours, and Vacation Watch, who served 1163 hours. The grand total
of hours served by C.H.A.P.S. volunteers in 2019 was 3,593 hours. Thank you for the applause!
C.H.A.P.S.' Two Main Functions VACATION WATCH
When residents are going to be away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form, available in the Welcome Center, the Membership Office at the Palm Center, or online at grandinfo.com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. Three criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the request form; and (3) homes for sale will NOT be accepted. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.

The schedule of hikes and membership information for new hikers can be viewed on the club website at www.scghikers.org. The January 2020 general meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 4 at 3 p.m. This meeting will be held via Zoom and residents of Sun City Grand are welcome to attend the meeting as guests. If you are interested in learning more about desert hiking or the hiking club, please contact the Club President at president@scghikers.org or the Hike Director at hikedirector@scghikers.org for the Zoom meeting link. Current club members will receive an email from the Club President with the meeting link. New and future club members are encouraged to participate in an Introductory Hike before signing up for a regular club hike. Introductory Hikes will be scheduled regularly in order to accommodate new members. Contact hikedirector@scghikers.org in order to schedule an Introductory Hike.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
What is a "Smart" TV? Our 10-year old TV seems a little dated and most of our friends have the large screen latest models, so we are thinking of purchasing another TV but everywhere we shop, salespeople want to sell us a “smart” television. What is a “smart” TV? Do we really need one? Jim and Gayle
Dear Jim and Gayle, The short answer to your query about whether you want or need a smart tv, is moot, because today most TVs on the market are considered “smart” TVs. Back in the day (about a decade ago), most televisions could only display programs from HDTV antennas, Cable or other A/V sources. Today, smart TVs are more like tablets, computers, or smartphones in that they come with voice recognition to search programs and change channels and with the ability to stream video over the internet. They have powerful processors, internet connectivity and easy-to-navigate software. Some even have smart home integration (connections to thermostats, security systems, doorbells, monitors, etc.). Today, the main attribute that separates TVs is the price, which is generally based on the size of the screen and the manufacturer.
44
The standard definition of a smart TV is a TV that can connect to the internet and supports a wide range of different applications. Whatever brand of TV you choose to purchase will offer you a variety of streaming services and content choices: paid subscription services (Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, etc.) as well as ad-supported free streaming services (You Tube, Tubi, Xumo, Crackle, Pluto TV, etc.) You can also stream music, with internet radio services (like Pandora, iHeartRadio, Sound Cloud, Spotify etc) as well as Social media, gaming, and video sharing sites, (YouTube, Twitter and Facebook are also available on many smart TVs). Many also come with Voice Assistants like Google Assistant or Alexa and perform the same functions as Smart Speakers. Not every smart TV will support the same apps and features. Some have proprietary operating
systems, and some use third-party built in software like Amazon Fire TV or Roku, and each will have a different user interface. Some will offer a full screen menu that lets you see several options at once and others use a scrolling ribbon of app icons along the bottom of the screen. Each brand will have its own unique remote control. Before buying any TV, check out the remote and surf through the interface to see which you find to be most favorable to use. Newer smart TVs do have features that others don’t offer like food ordering apps. Others will allow you to stream the video feed from your security cameras straight to your TV. Most major TV brands will periodically update the TV’s firmware, software, and add new features. Be advised that off brands and less expensive models generally tend to remotely update less often. One last thought: there is no need to buy a new smart TV if your current set is working well. Why not? Because you still can stream using set-top boxes or streaming devices and connect them to your current TV via HDMI, USB and even the yellow/red/ white RCA cables. Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, Google, or Amazon Fire TV are separate, inexpensive (compared to a new TV) streaming-media players. They work quite well at much less the price and have nearly every major service, as

well as hundreds of more obscure channels. While you might consider using your smart TV like a computer, be advised that smart TVs are not quite as safe as using your computer (which is equipped with security options like virus threat protection software) for performing sensitive transactions such as online shopping, trading, or banking-- or actually any transaction that involves using a credit card.
