3rd Annual Canada vs. USA Softball Challenge On Sunday February 25, 2018, there will be a Canada vs. USA Softball Challenge at the SCG ball field. This is a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Canadian Cancer Society. Several of the ball players wives have volunteered to sell raffle tickets to the fans for a 50/50 split. Last year we raised $1040. Jim Palzer, Coordinator for Relay for Life inside of SCG, is hoping we raise more money than last year. Last year the spectators filled up the stands and everyone

sang the National Anthem for both Canada and America. This year we plan to have singing again and a performance from Don Nelson on the Bagpipes. Randy Biko, Canadian Coach, and Bob Applebaum USA Coach, are hoping for a large turnout as this is a fun softball challenge and we will be raising money for a worthwhile charity. Mark your calendar and let’s play ball. The fun begins at 1 pm, Sunday afternoon at the SCG softball field.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Ride single file on paths not designed for two-abreast bicycles. Slow down, and give pedestrians a wide berth. Use your voice with a clear, “Coming through,” or “On your left,” and a friendly smile as you pass. However, don’t assume that others can hear you. Often people don’t hear sounds around them well, and some don’t hear at all. Others may have earbuds in their ears as they walk or run. Try not to startle anyone. If there’s not enough room to pass, wait patiently until it’s clearly safe to do so. If you’re training for the Tour-de-France or a triathlon, you probably shouldn’t be on a shared use trail.

Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager

Com-mu-ni-ty: a feeling of fellowship with others as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. The New Year has arrived, and January finds winter life in Grand in full swing. Sun City Grand facilities are bursting with activity; amenities are packed, parking spots are nearly impossible to find, and the traffic is heavy everywhere, including the community sidewalks and trails. A couple of months ago, I shared with you some thoughts about cooperation, compassion, and respect being necessary components in our quest for peaceful and harmonious community living. These concepts assume special significance in winter, when so many owners are in residence, and people are rushing to make the most of the mild Arizona weather by enjoying favorite outdoor activities. This brings with it some frustrating challenges

which crop up during these extra active times. One issue about which numerous residents have expressed concern is the shared use of Sun City Grand trails by walkers, runners, and bicyclists. The trails in Grand are “shared use” areas, available for the use of all residents. They are not public property like the streets and adjacent sidewalks, thus are not governed by city and state bicycle and pedestrian statutes. Those statutes can be found on http://AZbikelaw. org/Arizona-bicycle-laws and on the City of Surprise website, www.surpriseaz.gov. Within Sun City Grand, shared trails were constructed for walkers, joggers, and bicyclists. (Motor vehicles other than maintenance vehicles are not allowed on the trails.) The golden rule of shared paths is that the person in the less vulnerable

position should be mindful of the more vulnerable user. Think of it as a hierarchy from cyclists, to runners, to pedestrians, to frail or disabled individuals. When it comes to pathway etiquette, there are considerations for all shared path users to keep in mind. In general, everyone should stay to the right and pass on the left. Be constantly mindful of cyclists or pedestrians approaching from the front or behind. Keep an eye out for faster moving joggers or bicycle riders, especially when approaching curves or intersecting paths. Greet others with the smile of a friendly neighbor; you are both enjoying the use of your shared community amenity. At the top rung of the shared trails hierarchy, cyclists need to be mindful of all other users on the path. Keep your fingers on the brake lever, and remember that you are in a less vulnerable position than pedestrians.

Walking with a friend twoabreast is fully acceptable on the trails; however, courteously move to single file when being passed or when meeting others on the path. When a cyclist alerts you from behind that he/she is coming around, acknowledge that you hear them by gesturing or pleasantly speaking to them. Remember that cyclists are entitled to the use of the path, just as you are. If you have a pet on a leash with you (6 feet or less in accordance with City code), keep them on a short rein when bicycles are near. A sudden move by a startled animal could result in an injury to the animal, the owner, the cyclist, or all three. Ours is a socially and physically active community… some of the joys of living here. As we enjoy the advantages of life in Grand, let’s try to be mindful that our shared appreciation of this wonderful lifestyle is much of what binds us together into a community, and safety is always a priority.

CONVERSATION WITH KEN

The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Conversation with Ken will resume January 17, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Palm Center.

FROM THE Community Manager

OUR OWN SCG RESIDENT

RECEIVES AWARD Kym Stutzman Community Manager

In January of 2018 former Coach and Athletic Administrator Jack Lengyel will be awarded the AFCA’s prestigious McLaughry Award. The award is given to a “distinguished American for the highest distinction in service to others.” Some of the former recipients are Presidents Reagan and Bush (along with four other U.S. Presidents), astronauts such as Aldrin and Armstrong, General MacArthur, John Wayne, Mayor Giuliani, NFL Coach Dungy, and NFL Commissioner Rozelle. Coach Lengyel’s response to the news was to remark, “I am humbled and honored to be selected for the American Football Coaches Association’s Tuss McLaughry Award, and to be associated with those legendary former recipients. I want to thank my wife Sandy, my children David, Julie and Peter, for their dedicated support throughout my career. I stand on the shoulders of my former players, coaches, mentors, supporters, and family, and share this award with each and every one of them.”

A MOVIE WAS MADE Coach Lengyel first became known across the country after he was portrayed by Matthew McConaughey in the 2006 movie “We Are Marshall.” The movie told the story of Coach Lengyel rebuilding the football program after one

12

of the worst sports disasters in American history, a plane crash in 1970 that took the lives of 75 individuals from the town – including most all of the football coaches and players, as well as four doctors and their wives, prominent businessmen (boosters), statesmen, trainers, university administrators, and radio personnel. But this was just the most famous instance of Lengyel’s special gift for turning around an almost unsurmountable situation – not the exception, but his legend. Most coaches want to work for the most prestigious schools, those with the biggest budgets, the most air time, or the best records. But Lengyel didn’t just want to win games (although he enjoyed that tremendously too), he wanted to change lives by building foundations. Not just the lives of the players, but individuals lives among the college or university and the community as a whole. Whether serving as an assistant or head coach, assistant or interim AD, or Athletic Director, Lengyel focused on turning programs around. Then when they were stable and flourishing – he left the

glory to the next person and moved on to where he was needed next.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Lengyel’s special ability to “make a difference” opened doors for him beyond the world of academia. While his resume is about twice as long as this article, I thought I would highlight just a few of his accomplishments: in 2011 he was appointed as a member of the Special Fiesta Bowl Advisor Panel by then Governor Jan Brewer (Arizona), in 2004 the United States Embassy in Turkmenistan requested he be the clinic director and a guest lecturer on American Football held in Ashgabat Turkmenistan, he reported on sports news for the Goodwill Games in Moscow USSR for KMOX (Missouri) radio in 1986, he recommended and assisted in the development of three national awards, served as a College Football Color Analyst for ESPN, received more than 32 awards or honorary degrees, and served as a Chair or Board member for many organizations (including the College

Grand Lifestyles | January 2018 | grandinfo.com

Football Association and National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame).

When Del Webb created Sun City Grand the final plan included 583 maintained homes? These were homes in a dozen different neighborhoods which have their front (and side) yards maintained by the Association. The homeowners pay a separate additional assessment for this care. It includes irrigation water, pest treatments, and landscape maintenance (above ground). Landscape maintenance is done on a schedule posted on the website and covers trimming, raking granite, blowing debris out, replacing dead plant material, etc. This was set up as a perk for part-time residents so that their lawns would be cared for year round. Some of these homes were originally used as vacation

CHOOSING SCG I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Lengyel and his lovely wife, Sandy, at their beautiful home right here in Sun City Grand. After moving 23 times for his career, Jack left the choice of their retirement move to Sandy and she chose the warmth and sunshine of Arizona. Here at Grand they enjoy socializing in the community, going to the concerts and plays, and even spending time in the dog park (and they don’t have a dog!) I asked the two what they most wanted to see in Sun City Grand that isn’t already offered. They were both stumped by the question and replied, “Nothing!” I was sure a football field would come up,

but alas – Jack simply replied “This is the best Community in the country for activities and opportunities to be involved. The residents just need to utilize them.” The Lengyels particularly enjoyed visiting the pools before having one installed in their own yard for the health benefits. Sandy shared with me a football that was custom made by Wilson

villas for those who were considering a move here (to try it out first). Because these homes pay a set fee based on the care and water usage, no changes to the maintained areas may be made by the owners (or tenants) of these homes. Residents can landscape their rear yards to their delight (in accordance with all governing documents), but no changes may be made to the other areas. As always, exceptions do arise – but the exceptions must be approved, paid for by the homeowner, and performed by the Association landscape contractor only. Check www.grandinfo.com (Your Home, Maintained Homes) or call the Facilities Department for more information.

(sports equipment manufacturer) to commemorate their 60th anniversary. Each of the four sides displayed a different photograph depicting important achievements in Coach Lengyel’s career and home life. It was an awesome sight to see! Next, Jack handed me the College Championship ring that he wears that was specially made for him. While he was not the coach at the time Marshall won the National Championship, the man who did coach that team wanted to acknowledge the fact that there would not have been a football program at Marshall, if it were not for Coach Lengyel. He seems to wear it with both pride and affection, referring to it as a symbol of the program going from “ashes to glory.” As the phone rang several times during our visit, Jack commented that he still gets calls and emails from his past students and colleagues – for advice, recommendations, or invitations to speak or sit on a Board. While he has stepped down from most of the Boards he sat on and has limited his speaking

Happy New Year everyone. I hope one of your new years resolutions is to play more golf. I wanted to share this article that was written by the PGA of America in an effort to encourage everyone to play the proper set of tees by Teeing It Forward. As a reminder we have 5 sets of tees for you to choose from as well as a combo tee for each set of tees if you feel you are in between the current tees. You can find the combination tees on grandinfo.com under the Grand Golf tab and then Calendars, Events, News. forward tees should result in fewer overall shots, shorter distance traveled on each hole, and potentially, fewer lost balls.

By The PGA of America Published: Tuesday, May 24, 2011 | 3:25 p.m. To help golfers have more fun on the course and enhance their overall experience by playing from a set of tees best suited to their abilities, The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association have partnered to support “TEE IT FORWARD,” a new national initiative to be proposed for golf facilities nationwide from July 5-17. TEE IT FORWARD encourages all golfers to play the course at a length that is aligned with their average driving distance. Golfers can speed up play by utilizing tees that provide the greatest playability and enjoyment. The program will be promoted this week, at the 72nd Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, and at both the U.S. Open Championship in June and the U.S. Women's Open Championship in July. “Simply put, TEE IT FORWARD can make golf much more fun for millions of people,” said PGA of America initiative to be proposed for of tees, golfers will experience President Allen Wronowski. “We believe that by moving up to another set of tees, golfers will golf facilities nationwide from an exciting, new approach to experience an exciting, new approach to the game that will produce more enjoyment and elevate their July 5-17. the game that will produce desire to come back and play even more golf."

“The passion that golfers have for our game has the potential to be enhanced by the TEE IT FORWARD initiative,” said Jim Hyler, president of the United States Golf Association. “This is an innovation that we think will appeal to golfers of all skill levels because it gives them a new challenge that better aligns with their abilities. We hope that TEE IT FORWARD will be embraced by players and golf facilities across the country.” TEE IT FORWARD is not necessarily about creating a new set of tees — many facilities already have multiple tees in use every day. It is about changing the mindset of golfers in a positive way — encouraging people to consider setting aside playing from 6,5006,700 yards and moving up to a length of 6,000-6,200 yards or moving from 6,0006,200 yards to 5,700-5,800 yards. The 6,700-yard course that many amateur golfers play today is proportionally equivalent to a PGA Tour player competing on a course measuring 8,100 yards — 700 yards or more longer than a typical PGA Tour layout. Jack Nicklaus, who shares the

record with Walter Hagen for most PGA Championship titles with five and also shares the U.S. Open record with four victories, is a proponent of TEE IT FORWARD. “I love the game of golf but I will be the first to tell you that there are things about our game we need to improve,” Nicklaus said. “Now The PGA of America and the USGA have come together to develop ways that can make the game more attractive and more enjoyable. Tee It Forward is the first of many initiatives we have discussed together, and I think families around the country will enjoy alternate formats like this to make the game more fun.

levels to play the proper tees, but too often golfers want to bite off as much of the golf course as they can. What ends up suffering is their scorecard and their overall enjoyment. This program should help stimulate people to play the proper tees and maximize the golf experience.”

right here in Sun City Grand. As I left, I was allowed a peek at something very special to Jack in his office – a sketch done by a St. Louis Post Dispatch sports artist of his two sons in their uniforms from the Naval Academy. There amidst walls and shelves full of prestigious awards and degrees, signed photos and a letter from a President were the treasures that meant the most to him. These items were not on display for everyone who entered the home, but respectfully stored humbly out of sight where they remain a reminder to this family of the sacrifices they made for countless students and organizations. As Jack referred to those people he knew over the years, “We were all pieces of the puzzle; big or small, smooth or jagged, they are all needed to make the complete picture,” a sentiment that really symbolizes his whole philosophy on not just coaching – but life.

FROM THE GOLF ADVISORY COMMITTEE

SHOULD I BUY A 2018 GOLF PASS?

As our winter residents return and we kick off the 2018 golf season it is an excellent time to review our current golf pass options with the objective of helping residents decide which if any pass might best fit their golfing needs. Our golf passes

are designed to reward frequent play with loyaty discounts based on the premise that the more you play, the more you save. First, to learn exactly how many rounds you played last year, sign into Chelsea and click “Review My Information.” Then click

“Review Play History” (if you need help with accessing or using the Chelsea resevation system you can get that help at any of our 3 pro shops.) If you are an occational golfer (57 or fewer rounds of golf per year), the Resident Daily golf fee is

propably your best option. If you plan to play more than 58 rounds in 2018, the following chart should help you evaluate the characteristics and savings associated with each pass and aid you in making your decision.

Keep in mind, actual savings are dependent on how much and when you actually play. If you end up overestimating how much you will play in 2018, the new Pass Refund Policy provides a safety net. You can review that policy on Grand Golf (grandinfo.com). Good luck and “hit ‘em straight,” or at least have fun and enjoy the walk.

Here we are, the gluttony of 2017’s holiday season is now behind us and it’s time to recommit to our health and wellness. We have so many selections to choose from in the SCG Fitness Department. In this issue we’ll look at some of them. Along with our most popular classes, we invite you to try something new. In both Adobe and Cimarron, handouts are available that explain all of our ongoing classes. Flyers are posted within the fitness centers that advertise special events, challenges, lectures, or workshops. We always recommend that our members register at www.grandinfo.com and

We focus on offering a variety of diverse and effective exercise classes and programs that meet the needs of our diverse membership. We recommend any of our Aqua Aerobic classes for those who have joint pain and joint disorders. Movement challenges can be served by attending Rusty Hinges, PWR! Moves, Beginner Strength and Balance, and Movers & Shakers (formerly Seniors w/ Compromised Movement). As we age, we know how important it is to incorporate stretching movements to improve flexibility, movement and pain reduction. We encourage attending any of our stretch-related classes. Yoga (including Chair Yoga if getting to the floor is a challenge), Pilates, Tai- Chi and Chi-Gong can also enhance balance and mindfulness. The ancient practice of Chi-Gong, Tai-

Chi, and Meditation will instill body awareness and presence of mind. Chi-Gong and Tai-Chi also train slow movements that build strength and agility in your body. From Zumba, to Jazzercise and Dance Fitness, these classes furnish energetic formats that encourage community, while dancing your way to more strength, a stronger heartrate, and coordination. If you really want a challenge, try Kickstart Cardio, Tabata, HIIT Camp, and Ampfit (Yes, it’s outside!). These are only some of the classes that push you to the limit for high-intensity cardio and muscle work. Strength 50, MuscleWorks, ToneZone, incorporate additional strength gaining moves to their heart-pumping drills. One-on-One personal training, and small group training, are a great way to get started if you’d like the expertise of a certified trainer and desire a customized, supervised workout. Remember, Sun City Grand Fitness now offers one-on-one nutrition counseling, or group workshops. Why not add a goal to keep you inspired and focused for the new year? The Grand Olympics, held for two weeks, January 15-28th, is a challenge against yourself; what are you willing to aim for, gold, silver, or bronze? The 3rd Annual SCG 5K Walk-Run, takes place on Friday, February 16th at 8 am. Create a team and carry a banner, come on your own, or show up to compete, and enjoy the beauty of SCG’s neighborhoods while you walk or run 3.1 miles. You can register for both at the Adobe and Cimarron front desks. We wish you well on your health and wellness journey in 2018! from Merriam Crater and created a lava dam. Located 30 miles East of Flagstaff, this waterfall wonder sits on Navajo Nation land in the Painted Desert. The falls are fed by the snow melt and rain from the White Mountains and flows into the Little Colorado river. For this reason there are only specific times of year that the waterfalls are actually flowing. The best time to see the falls are during March and April. This is due to the snow melt from earlier in the year. There is also a short period in the summer that you can see the falls due to monsoon season but the window is short and is highly dependent on the weather patterns on that year. The Grand Falls are over 181 feet tall and known for the beautiful rainbows created by the impact and spray of the falls. If you are looking to spend the day checking out what the Grand Falls Arizona has to offer be sure to utilize the picnic benches and gazebos next to the edge of the gully. This area is

pretty remote and bringing food and water with you is recommended. Just remember that you are on Navajo land and need to be respectful of leaving no trace including trash. Being on Navajo land also means that there is a hiking permit required. Please look at the park’s website for more details. This area is difficult to get to, therefor we recommend having a vehicle with four-wheel drive. The hike onto the gully is distinct and covered in black rocks. This hike is only a half mile long and easy, but use caution as there is loose rock. The Grand Falls Arizona is an amazing place to explore and some people even choose to hike around the water. But please remember to be careful and that places that look solid could actually be soft mud that could collapse under any weight. This natural wonder is worth the bumpy ride. Don’t miss this southwestern paradise that emerges from the Arizona desert with breathtaking force!

SCG Resident of the Month Paul Burkhart Before retiring, Paul Burkhart was the Director of Pharmacy for the University of Washington Health Care System and a Professor in the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. He always had an interest in art, but the demands of his career didn’t allow time for that pursuit. Upon retiring eighteen years ago, Paul joined the Sun City Grand Art Club to try his hand at painting. At that time, he had the good fortune of meeting fellow SCG Art Club member, Jim McGee, a retired Boston artist. Jim volunteered as a mentor during the open painting sessions at the art club and became a major influence in Paul’s art development. Paul also took advantage of the club’s classes, workshops and the critique of fellow members. He remembers his first art sale, a small painting of native American pottery for forty-five dollars. It was a big day and the start of a new endeavor. Over the years, Paul has participated in multiple art shows and is a member of the Arizona Artists Alliance (juried), the Wickenburg Art Club (juried) and the Sun City Grand Art Club. He has also served on The Arts and Cultural Advisory Board for the City of Surprise, AZ and the Planning Committee for the West Valley Art Museum. 26

Paul works with oils and acrylics mainly on canvas. His focus is twofold: 1.) Southwest stilllife, incorporating Native American artifacts with regional pottery and textiles, and 2.) street scenes and landscapes from his travels to various parts of Italy, France, Mexico and the United States. He utilizes multiple layers and washes in his paintings to create interesting

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

BARBARA AND DENNIS HESSKAMP PROFILE

The couple, who recently celebrated 55 years of marriage, roll out a red carpet of hospitality to practically everyone they meet, and their circle of friends keeps stretching to accommodate additional kindred spirits. “We’ve met some fantastic people over the years, friends who we still are in contact with,” says Barbara, who smiles frequently and laughs with childlike ease. Dennis is quick to shake hands, strike up a friendly conversation and make people feel at home. The Hesskamps newest friends are residents of The Colonnade, where the couple moved last July after comparison shopping at several retirement communities in the Valley, and in California and Kansas where children and grandchildren live.

Barbara was a junior high and high school teacher (home economics, social studies and later career training) for more than 20 years. She too formed many lasting bonds. Some of her former students still stay in touch, appreciative of the encouragement she gave them.

There’s a Scottish saying that we can count the true friends in our lifetime on the fingers of but one hand.

When they weren’t working and raising their daughter and son, the Hesskamps traveled by RV all over the United States and Canada, again making friends wherever they roamed. After they retired, the couple would “RV” for months at a time. They visited all 48 contiguous states and have photos, souvenirs and friendships to prove it.

Barbara and Dennis Hesskamp probably never heard that saying, or if they did, they ignored it.

For years, they befriended couples they met through square dancing and round dancing groups, activities that naturally lend themselves to socializing. Although the Hesskamps gave up square and round dancing a few years back for physical reasons, they still like to kick up their feet in line-dancing classes at The Colonnade.

“We just can’t get over how pleasant people are at The Colonnade,” Barbara says. “I’m not just talking about the people that live here, but the staff too. Everyone is just phenomenal.” In fact, it was a friend who strongly urged Barbara and Dennis to consider moving to a Life Care community like The Colonnade. “We used to square dance and camp with this friend and her husband. They had picked out a Life Care community in southern California but while they were waiting for an opening, and to sell their home, the husband died. Despite the loss, the wife still decided to move in,” Dennis says. “When we visited her, she made us promise to check out Life Care communities,” Barbara says. “She said she just wished she and her late husband had moved sooner.” The Hesskamps are glad their friend pushed them. “We made the right decision. We’re very happy here,” Dennis says. Wherever the couple have worked 28

and lived (Missouri, California and Arizona) they’ve made fast friends. Dennis worked in the claims department for State Farm Insurance for almost 38 years, during which time he and Barbara got to know hundreds of people. “State Farm was like a second family,” Dennis says. “We had picnics, office luncheons for staff and family members, we played on softball teams together; went dancing.”

The Hesskamps feel a deep kinship with their faith family at Calvary Chapel Surprise, a nondenominational Christian church in Surprise. They are known at Calvary for their willingness to help with whatever is needed. Most recently they took part in the church’s annual recreation of the town of Bethlehem. Barbara played a townsperson while Dennis played an angel. Not surprisingly, their favorite volunteer assignment is greeting worshippers on Sunday mornings. Welcoming comes naturally for them. The Colonnade is a Sun Health Life Care Community, located at 19116 Colonnade Way, Surprise. For more information, call 623-236-3700 or visit sunhealthseniorliving.org/arizona-lifecare-communities/the-colonnade.

NATIONAL LAWN BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP area at the National Championships was an honor.” And because he has played in other tournaments, including the US Open in Sarasota, FL in November, his list of friends include bowlers from Australia, England, Israel, Netherlands, and Hong Kong.

Winners of the US South Central Division Men’s Pairs Competition earlier this year, Ron Rollick and David Shaw qualified to play in the US National Championship held at Newport Harbor, CA in October. The US is divided into eight divisions for lawn bowling, each division sending only three men and three women to the US Championship. Ron and David won four straight matches, qualifying for the semi-finals, and finally placed third in the US. Their achievement is all the more noteworthy as the divisions are not age restricted and both Ron and David had never tried lawn bowling before moving to Sun City Grand. “I watched my first game in 2012,” said Rollick, “and knew I would be better at it than golf. Haven’t swung a golf club since.” David has played for two years, choosing lawn

bowling over other activities “because everyone at Grand lawn bowling was so welcoming, the atmosphere so friendly.” Both men agree that learning to play is easy, and, as with other sports, mastering requires dedication. David admits he is “completely addicted.” “I have found many new friends through bowling here at Grand,” Rollick said with a smile. “Qualifying to represent our

Men Putters Club

David knew he would be the most inexperienced player in the championship, so with characteristic wry humor admitted “my fervent hope traveling to California was that we didn’t finish last. Please, I thought, just let me win one game!” Clearly, placing third in the United States, both bowlers have found their niche. The Grand Lawn Bowling Club is fortunate to have these dedicated and talented men as members. Like the true champions that they are, Ron and David will gladly interrupt their practice to share their passion for the game with others.

Have any interest in putting?

Want to meet others that share this interest? If so, then plan to come over to the beautiful 18-hole putting green located just west of the Cimarron club house, right off of W. Clearview Blvd. You are invited to play a “guest” round with one of a Men Putters club member.

putting scHedule

The Men Putters do “their thing” weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, at 1:00 PM, all 3 days, starting in November. (In the summer, we go to an early morning start time in order to beat the heat.) Members feel free to pick whatever day they prefer to participate and some even putt all 3 days.

Here is a typical daily event

Register to play, be paired with another person, putt 18 holes, and lastly, participate in a 19th hole challenge (this is a special one-hole challenge). Other change-of-pace fun putting challenges are offered throughout the year long program.

social activities

There are some occasional social activities when members meet to vote on new officers OR just meet for club sponsored soda and hot dogs.

volunteers

Member volunteers run the club’s daily putting activities such as setting up the course, registering members and guests, etc.

the Men putters is a new club, started several years ago, and membership has continued to grow with each new season.

Membership, pictures and lots of other information can be found on our website: www.scgmenputters.weebly.com. or, you can simply stop by the cimarron green to meet us and just ask about joining.

UPDATE FROM THE CONSENT COMMITTEE The Board of Directors has suspended the consent process and all consents received are null and void. What that means is, although the CC&Rs and Bylaws need to be changed, the committee will focus on Member input/concerns we received at the town hall meetings. The committee will continue to have town hall meetings to hear from you, the Members, about your concerns with any of the proposed changes to the documents. The committee will make a recommendation to the Board for its consideration before proceeding with the approval process.

Increase of maximum Special Assessment from 5% to 15% of annual budget; and n Neighborhood Representative program. n

Each of these will be discussed in future Grand Lifestyles articles, eblasts, flyers, and on grandinfo.com home page. The most common concerns raised by Members at the last two town hall meetings are: n Perceived increase of Board control; n Signatures on checks; n CARE fee;

The town hall schedule is on the opposite page. If you have questions or comments, address them to scgconsentnow@gmail. com. Thank you from the Consent Committee.

MY CURRENT FULL-TIME JOB Submitted by Bob Richards C.H.A.P.S. Chair

C.H.A.P.S. is “dedicated to preserving the security of Sun City Grand residents” according to the C.H.A.P.S. Policy Manual. With January now here and February and March fast ahead, we now have more of our residents

here than at any other time of the year. Drive through Sun City Grand and you see walkers, bike riders, golf carts, Gothic landscapers, and plenty of cars. Coming out of my residential street on Mountain View Blvd., I feel like I am watching a tennis match looking left, right, left,

C.H.A.P.S. meets next on Tuesday, January 23 at 1:30 P.M. in the Sonoran Plaza. Everyone is welcome. Make a difference with C.H.A.P.S. right. When can I make my left turn on Mountain View? So much foot, bike, and car traffic! So I am reminded. Driving my car here is my full-time job. To “preserve the security of Sun City Grand residents” I cannot ever let myself be distracted by my cell phone, my passengers, the glare of the setting sun, my pet on my lap . . . anything at all. I have seen a driver race through a stop sign. I have seen a street sign and a street light pole after they were mowed down by an inattentive driver. These are rare events, but they have

happened because drivers were not paying full-time attention. Please, make driving your car, golf cart, or bike your full time job. You’re retired! What’s the hurry? Slow down. Speed limits (25 mph residential, 35 mph major SCG streets) must be observed. Stop completely at stop signs. Don’t tailgate. Stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk. Buckle your seatbelt. Take a safe driving course through Grand Learning. Showing courtesy to other drivers and walkers and driving safely is the best “full-time job” we can all have. That’s security for all of us.

With this event being the first of its kind, we experienced great success and will be planning future Happy Hours. Don’t miss out on our next Happy Hour over at the Palm Center.

This travelogue features a four-week trip to southern Africa including Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia and Namibia. Of course, you’ll see lots of beautiful animal photos, but this slideshow emphasizes the safari experience - activities, people and places. We enjoyed game drives, elephants just outside your tent, guided walks, village visits, delicious meals, “sundowners” and much more. Is a safari for you? TAD PRESENTS: SEPHIRA The international music sensation, Sephira, features dueling violins and captivating vocals covering the greatest hits and anthems of our time. Sisters Ruth and Joyce O’Leary deliver their distinct brand of powerful melodies leaving the audience with an exhilarating sense of empowerment and strength. The spark of greatness started very early on for both Sisters. Joyce began playing violin at the age of two and a half, and Ruth at six. Years later, after studying at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Sephira broke away from their traditional classical influences and became known for their selfdescribed “dueling violins and ethereal vocals.” Their psychic “sisterly connection” is very apparent on stage with their delivery and mirrorlike choreography. Sephira are undeniably one of the World’s most exciting musical talents having appeared with Andrea Bocelli, Kanye West, Michael Buble and Enya. This was all followed by a two-year engagement as the dancing violinists for the show,“ Celtic Thunder.” $20/person Front of House | $17/person Back of House Evening Shows | 6:30 p.m. Cash Bar; 7 p.m. Performance Sonoran Plaza $20/person Front of House | $17/person Back of House Matinee Shows | 3:30 p.m. Cash Bar; 4 p.m. Performance Sonoran Plaza

MUSIC CLUB PRESENTS–MANLY LOVE SONGS, PART VI–MORRIE GOES TO MAYO’S The manly Men of Sun City Grand’s Music Club, have progressed from “Amateur Night” patrons of “Morrie’s Tap” (Parts 1, 2 & 3) to participants in a “Reunion” (Part 4) after the tavern closed. That was followed by a rather ill-conceived and ill-fated “Road Trip” (Part V). They’ve barely recovered from that trip when they find out their erstwhile leader, Morrie, has fallen ill and is undergoing a series of tests in the famous Mayo Clinic. The Manly Men come rushing to support him at the clinic. What follows is a mad musical mixture of hilarious proportions involving medical testing, diagnostics, procedures, insurance; all things medical. The show is filled with uproarious parodies of relevant pop songs such as “Mayo, May – ay –ay -o” (from Day-O, the Banana Boat Song). The vocal music is performed by soloists, small groups, and maybe even a reappearance of the (in)famous “Dust Devils” ne’er do well chorus (if they can get their act together). The music is live and lively – both vocals and accompaniment. Come join the in the fun at “Morrie Goes to Mayo’s!!!! BISBEE, ARIZONA & THE SANDHILL CRANES OF WHITEWATER DRAW WILDLIFE AREA We will stop in Tombstone for lunch on your own, shopping and exploring the town’s historic streets. After checking into the hotel you will enjoy a fabulous three-course chicken dinner and a glass of wine, included, at award winning Café Roka. On day 2 you will head for the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area, one of the best places to view Sandhill cranes, with an estimated winter population of over 30,000! The Sandhill cranes spend the night standing in Whitewater Draw’s shallow waters to evade predators, and then fly out each morning at the crack of dawn, to feed and socialize in the surrounding area. With an impressive wingspan of 6 to 7 feet, the early morning mass ascension of the Sandhill cranes is something that should be on everyone’s bucket list! There is no visitor’s center at the Draw, but there are restrooms, and we’ll be serving plenty of hot coffee along with a continental style breakfast Later we’ll head back to our hotel for a quick refresh, and we’re back on the bus headed for historic Bisbee. GRAND FALLS ON THE LITTLE COLORADO RIVER Despite the fact that they are taller than Niagara Falls, the Grand Falls on the Little Colorado River are one of Arizona’s best kept secrets. Dry throughout most of the year, we should be hitting it just right to enjoy the dramatic spring runoff from the White Mountains! Often called the “Chocolate Falls,” what makes the Grand Falls so unique is the muddiness of the Colorado River. With no signs to direct us, and only a dirt road to get us across scenery that looks a lot like the painted desert, the Grand Falls on the Little Colorado River are not a popular tourist destination, but well worth the travel to get there! 70

The Grand Falls are breathtaking! On our way we’ll stop in Flagstaff for lunch on self, at the restaurant of your choice. Historic downtown Flagstaff is loaded with great little restaurants, offering something for everyone. *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels. HOPILAND We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee & goodies, on our way to historic Cameron’s Trading Post for lunch on you own. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’re headed for the Desert View Entrance of the Grand Canyon. This lesser known east entrance to the Grand Canyon is part of the South Rim, but less accessible, and much less visited by tourists. We’ll stop first at the iconic Desert View Watchtower, where the panoramic view stretches out 100 miles, to include the Painted Desert, the North Rim and the Colorado River. Afterwards we’ll loop our way back and exit the Grand Canyon at the East end, headed for Tuba City—the Western Gateway to Hopi and home of The Moenkopi Hotel. This is the first hotel built on Hopi tribal land in 50 years and was the inspiration of the Elders of Upper Village of Moenkopi. After checking into this lovely hotel, we’ll take a minute to refresh, and then we’ll head into Tuba City for dinner on your own. We’ll enjoy breakfast, included, at the hotel, before meeting our Hopi guide, Gary Tso. Gary is without a doubt, our favorite tour guide! Gary will jump in the bus with us and take us into the villages throughout Hopi Land. Gary will take us through these living villages—the original homes are still intact and have been continuously occupied for centuries. Later we’ll stop for lunch on self at the Hopi visitor’s center, where the menu offers both American favorites and traditional Native American dishes. After touring the Hopi villages, we’ll return to our hotel and refresh before dinner on your own and a free evening. We’ll enjoy breakfast included at the hotel, and after breakfast it’s bags, back on the bus headed south on scenic Highway 89, headed for historic downtown Flagstaff. We’ll enjoy lunch on your own f in Flagstaff’s charming downtown district. Afterwards we’ll hit it for home, with plenty of great sightseeing and stops along the way. *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels. GRAND LEARNING Information and Registration at 623-546-7470 or grandlearning.org HAPPY 2018! Did you know that Grand Learning has twice as many students who have taken classes than the number 2018? Are you one of them? Our spring catalog has over 90 classes and is sure to have something for everyone. From psychology to art history, from writing and publishing to music, from meditation to astronomy – Grand Learning has it all. Pick up a catalog in one of our Sun City Grand facilities or check us out online at www.grandlearning.org

WE HAVE MANY CLASSES THAT FIND PARTICULAR RELEVANCE IN TODAY’S WORLD n Does our healthcare system need a fix? Come find out on January 24 at 4 pm. n Hear what people who have lived in Africa have to say about this fascinating and diverse continent. n In this age of social media and instant communications, see what role Groupthink plays. Don’t know what that is…that’s why you should take the class! n The folks from the Central Arizona Project will talk about the future of water in the Valley…Phoenix is one of the fastest growing regions in the US…is there enough water? n There are fascinating developments in the world of medical genetics…hear about how CRISPR works and what scientists are doing with it. Or learn about your DNA…we’ll have a class about the DNA tests this spring, and next fall we plan a class to interpret your results and integrate them into your genealogy studies. n For you history buffs we have a week long class about WWI and also a class about women during the Civil War. They did more than stay home and tend to the family. Does history repeat itself? Think you know the Columbus story? Hear about Columbus vs. Las Casas (who/what are is that?) on March 2 at 3. n Take a look at Landmark Supreme Court cases…has the Court reached a point where it will be reversing itself or is it relying on precedent? Are you a stargazer…we have two very different Astronomy classes and a look at Archeoastronomy. Curious about Women Artists? We’ll learn about many famous (and not so famous) women on March 9 at 9 am. There’s much more…too many to recount here. REGISTRATION BEGINS TUES., JANUARY 2 (No, you can’t register online at midnight. Really – 9 a.m.) You can register online (your best bet), in person in our newly renovated double classroom (Maricopa/Havasupai), or over the phone (623-546-7470).

A COUPLE OF HINTS ABOUT REGISTRATION n If you cannot access your account, please do not create a new account. Give us a call (623-546-7470) and let us assist you in accessing your account n And remember – just like the Olympics, you can pay with a Visa or a Mastercard, NOT with American Express or Discover. Watch for a balance due of $0 at the bottom of the page. This means that your registration was successful. n A common reason that your payment did not go through is that the address in our system does not match the address where you receive your credit card statement. (You can make this address change yourself in your account) IT’S NOT TOO EARLY TO START THINKING ABOUT SUMMER CLASSES As many of you know, we offer an abbreviated semester during the summer months. Are you interested in teaching a class – and perhaps trying it out on a smaller audience? Give us a call or come on by the office and we’ll see what we can come up with. We are truly grateful that so many of you take advantage of this “grand” amenity known as Grand Learning. We are looking forward to seeing all of you in our spring classes.

Jim Hayden

City announces the passing of Councilmember Jim Hayden Surprise, AZ (December 20, 2017) District 2 Councilmember Jim Hayden passed away this afternoon, following a short illness. Hayden was first appointed by the Surprise City Council to serve out the remainder of the term for the District 2 council seat in October 2016. That seat was vacated by the incumbent in September 2016. Having won the District 2 seat in the August 2016 Primary Election, his four-year term began on January 1, 2017. “Jim was a gentle soul and humble public servant,” says Mayor Sharon Wolcott. “Surprise was most fortunate to have him amongst us. The Valley has lost a dear friend, but his legacy of service is larger than life itself, and one that will continue to impact us all.” Hayden was a longtime West Valley resident dedicating his life to public service. For 22 years, Jim served on the Glendale Fire Department as a fire fighter and EMT. He was a Vietnam War veteran and served 20 years in the United States Air Force, where he trained pilots with critical skills needed to survive wartime conditions. He also served as Adjunct Faculty at Glendale Community College, teaching Fire Science and Emergency Medical Technicians. Prior to joining council, he served as Chairman of the Surprise Public Safety Retirement Board. Hayden was an advocate for public safety and the overall Quality of Life for residents. Jim and his wife Nancy have lived in Sun City Grand for 12 years.

Desert Willow Tree At first glance the name Desert Willow seems like a contradiction in terms. Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) is not a true willow. Many people have attributed the name to the long (2" to 5"), slender, glossy green leaves that typically grow towards the ground. The leaf canopy has a weeping, willow-like

appearance. Much of the literature refers to Chilopsis as a large shrub to small tree growing to 15' to 28' tall with spreads of 10' to 12'.

Desert Willow is native in the southwest and northern Mexico.

This species is best known for their showy flowers. These appear in clusters on branch tips from late spring to late summer and can vary in color from pinkish white to deep purple. Normally, they are off-white to pale lavender with yellow spots or stripes in the throat of the trumpet-shaped blossoms. In addition, the flowers have a sweet fragrance that attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. The flowering season can be extended with supplemental irrigation during hot drought periods. These trees prefer well drained soil and are drought tolerant once they

have become established. Watering deeply every two weeks in the summer and at least every 2 months in the winter is usually sufficient for the tree. Supplemental fertilizer is not required but can aide in the growth rate and flowering capacity. The Desert Willow will produce seed pods and will lose its leaves in the winter. If the showy flowers outweigh the pods and the loss of leaves, this may be a small tree you would like to add to your landscape in the future.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

smartphone Dear Cappie, I have finally decided to buy a new smartphone and have narrowed my search to the new iPhone X and the Galaxy Note 8. Which do you think would be the best one to purchase? Randy from Sun City Grand

Dear Randy, Both choices are high end, powerful, state-of-the art smartphones and either one would be a terrific buy. Since you have not indicated whether you have Android– or Apple–based preferences or how tech savvy you might be, it is difficult to emphatically state which phone would be the best buy for you. Even after reading all the fine points of each device, you will probably decide by your preference for either the Android or iOS operating system. Both the Galaxy Note and the iPhone X have several of the same features: n Screen size: 5.8 inches n 12 MP (megapixel) rear camera n Waterproof n Face scanner n Wireless charging

convenient feature; but you can configure it to be active only during certain time periods if you are worried about depleting your battery life. The iPhone X screen is blank until you wake it or a notification appears. Camera—Both have front and rear cameras. The Galaxy Note 8 has 2 12MP, f/1.7, OIS lenses (optical image stabilizer--used to reduce camera shake)

on the rear and a 12MP, f/1.7, OIS lens front camera – which gives your selfies a higher resolution image. The dual-lens camera on the back has a Live Focus feature to add and adjust bokeh effects after the shot is taken. (Apple also has its Portrait Mode bokeh feature available on the front-facing camera). The iPhone X rear camera has 2 lenses: a 12 MP wide-angle F/1/8 lens OIS, and a 12MP

Home Button—Also new to both devices are the lack of a home button. The Galaxy 8 uses an invisible, pressuresensitive home button and the usual Android interface. Apple uses a new swipe-based navigation system to close apps by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and to navigate between apps by swiping left and right. Screen Resolution—The Note has a higher screen resolution with a pixel density of 570 ppi (pixels per inch) while the iPhone X has 458 ppi—but the difference is barely visible to the naked eye due to the Galaxy’s power-saving features that lower output resolution on the Galaxy whenever possible. Time and Date Display—The Note 8 has an always-on display where you can see time, date and notifications without needing to wake the screen fully – a

telephoto lens with an f/2.4 OIS. On the front it has a 7MP f/2.4 lens OIS. The iPhone X’s portrait mode on the rear-facing cameras lets you adjust how the phone perceives lighting, and you can even drop the background of an image entirely to give your image a more studio-like look. Processors—Both phones are equipped with extremely fast processors: the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 or Samsung’s Exynos 8895 systems-ona-chip for the Galaxy 8 and the A11 Bionic with four low-power cores and two high-power cores for the iPhone X. Other features—The Note 8 has biometric security, with its own face recognition and an iris scanner on the front and a fingerprint scanner too –

located on the back side of the phone. Other features of the iPhone are facial recognition instead of a password, Live Photos (captures a few seconds of video footage before and after you take a still photo), and 3D Touch (the ability to either press the screen or ‘force press’ it.) The screen is sensitive to varying degrees of pressure – a touch on the screen will make the photo play the video portion of the photo, or you can use hard presses to see previews of links, use interface shortcuts, etc. Bottom line: Both phones are, from a technological standpoint, excellent buys. If you never had a smartphone before, the iPhone has an easier learning curve. If you have an iPhone now and are happy with the operating system, or have an Android and have

difficulty learning all the nuances of customization or care less about personal modifications, get an iPhone. If you are bored with the constraints of how minimally you can customize the iPhone – and want to choose from thousands of third party widgets to add on to your home or lock screens, want convertible note taking with a great stylus included, get additional storage with an SD card slot, and have a true working file/folder system by plugging your phone into your PC (converting it to an external drive where you can drag and drop folders), get the Galaxy Note 8. Either choice will give you one of the two best smartphones on the market today.

2017 Showcase of Toys Contributed by: Jim Fenley Photo Credit: Mark Lang

The Grand Woodcrafters had another successful year designing and building toys. This translates into a lot of happy families at Christmas time. On November 30, 2017 all the toys were amassed at the Gila Room in the Cimarron Center for the community to view. The toys were then sorted into four bundles and delivered the next day to the designated organizations: Luke Air Force base for Operation Angle Tree, Eve’s Place, St. Mary Food Bank and the Surprise Fire Department. Many individuals and organizations within Grand supported this effort. The Community Service Unit of the Stichers produced clothing for the dolls and bedding for the cradles, pads for the rockers and Adirondack chairs and bags for the games and puzzles. The Beader’s supplied bracelets for the jewelry boxes, and the Art Club decorating many of the toys. Also, many individuals supported us by buying dolls for the cradles and chairs. The number of toys produced is mind boggling, 1313 toys were produced in 2017. This was 23% more than last year. The Toy Project was started back in 2002 with over 200 toys produced. Without the support of the Grand Woodcrafters Board and all its’ members the toymakers could not continue this rewarding effort. While we never intended on keeping records on the number of toys produced, we estimate that over the history of the toy project we have donated over 7,000 toys.
