FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Monsoon Safety Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager

The 2019 monsoon season is upon us and it is a good idea to review safety tips regarding our summer weather. According to the National Weather Service our monsoon season starts June 15 and ends on September 30. This year meteorologists believe we’ll see a delayed start which fits the different weather patterns we have experienced year-to-date. If SCG residents follow basic monsoon safety tips it could go a long way to prevent or minimize damage to property and reduce the risk of personal injury. Here are general tips to stay safe during typical Arizona monsoon conditions:

FLOODING

During the monsoon season dangerous conditions can quickly appear and spawn high winds, rains and severe downpours. Monsoon dust storms can quickly reduce driving visibility to almost zero. If driving in the midst of a dust storm pull off the road and turn your lights off and wait until it has passed. Never leave the car lights on since other motorists may try to follow what they believe is a moving vehicle, thus creating a dangerous situation. Sudden and intense rains can quickly change a dry wash into a raging torrent of water. When flash flooding occurs on a roadway, avoid entering any water flowing over the road since the depth and current speed cannot be safely determined from water’s edge. If you see a sign that says “Do Not Cross When Flooded,” take it seriously. Remember, Arizona has a “Stupid Motorist Law” which allows municipalities and rescue agencies to charge people for the cost of being rescued if they fail to observe posted

warnings. Typically, flooding conditions are temporary but require extreme caution when encountered on the road.

HIGH WINDS

Monsoon winds can wreak havoc with trees and property unless adequate preparations occur before the storm season begins. Cracked trees are clear indicators of potential branch failure that may lead to splitting in forceful winds. Identify poor tree composition (branch structure), look for excessive leaning, long horizontal limbs, crossing branches that rub against each other creating wounds and narrow crotches (V-shaped instead of U-shaped). Two trunks that are of identical diameter and have a narrow crotch are more susceptible to split during a high wind event. Move potted plants and any other property that is not bolted down to an inside space. The last thing you need is for your lawn chairs to end up on the neighbor’s yard or in their windows. Heed all weather warnings issued and stay inside.

LIGHTNING

Lightning kills two people every year in Arizona on average, with many more sustaining permanent injuries. When you hear thunder, you are close enough to a storm to be struck by lightning. Take cover in a sturdy building, avoiding conductive wiring and plumbing. Stay away from open fields, high land, trees, utility poles, other tall structures, standing bodies of water including swimming pools, and metal objects like golf clubs and lawn chairs. Keep your distance from windows. Stay off the phone and use cell phones

for emergency purposes only. Make sure you round up all your battery-operated equipment such as radio and flashlights and keep candles handy also.

DOWNED POWER LINES

Downed lines are very hazardous to any vehicle or pedestrian in close proximity. This situation becomes even more extreme when water is present as would be experienced after a rain storm. Downed power lines will energize the ground around them, with point of ground contact as much as 7,160 volts, according to Phoenix officials.

VEHICLE HYDROPLANING

When rain starts all the oils on the road rise to the surface and for about a 10-minute period it is akin to driving on an oil slick with very little traction to the road surface. As the rain water continues to collect on the road surface, hydroplaning can begin with water depths as little as 1/10th of an inch. The important factors relating to hydroplaning are tread depth, vehicle speed and the depth of water on the road surface. During rain storms it is much safer to drive at slower speeds and avoid driving on tires with low tread depth. A simple rule of thumb is to not drive during a monsoon storm unless it is absolutely necessary. We spend most of the year in dry, warm weather; the Arizona monsoon offers a spectacular exception to that rule. It is the time of year to be aware and prepared for the volatile weather that defines our Arizona monsoon season.

COFFEE CONVERSATION WITH KEN

The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Conversation with Ken is July 17, at 8 a.m. in the Palm Center. 10

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

THE SCIENCE OF GRASS ON THE GOLF COURSE n

n

n

n

n

Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

When Sun City Grand was built and was actively selling homes, the key focus for the golf courses was to have the best winter conditions and hold onto the ryegrass as long as possible into the warmer summer months. This plan worked well to help sell the homes quickly and to have the ryegrass “hang on” longer to have better playing conditions longer into the summer months. This plan proved to be negative in the long run for the health of the base grass; Bermuda grass. Every year this practice was done, it was depriving the Bermuda grass of the opportunity to have 100 days of noncompetitive growth which started to weaken the base. In 2008, it was the year that the Bermuda grass “gave up” and the conditions in the fairways were poor. It was at that time the Sun City Grand Board of Directors accepted

12

the plan that was presented to them by staff to put as much emphasis on summer golf as is put on winter golf. The plan included the following which include some modifications that were changed over time to improve the process. n Remove the winter ryegrass with a selective herbicide. This would remove all of the competition for the Bermuda grass and show all of the weak areas on the golf courses.

n

n

Close the courses for 3 weeks each and treat them just like a fall overseeding. Staff would aerify the golf course pulling cores. An outside contractor would then deep tine the fairways with ¾ inch solid tines. The ground was so hard the first couple of years that the tines would bend or snap. An outside contractor would spread 35 tons of sand per acre on the fairways to build them up to create a better growing condition for Bermuda grass. Put down sod in areas that have no sign of Bermuda grass growth in a 100 square foot area. This was about an acre or more of sod per golf course when the program first started and there are almost no areas today that fit the original criteria for sodding. Remain on cart paths only for 3 weeks to allow the grass to fill in. (Treat the summer transition similar to the fall transition.) Double aerify and heavily topdress the greens to create less interruptions during the summer golf when this practice needs to be done.

3/4 inch solid tines that were bent or split during the beginning years of the summer transition program

In the fall, reduce the amount of seed from 700 pounds per acre in the fairways to 550 and the roughs would go from 450 to 350. This would create some off color but would be less stressful to the Bermuda grass.

The plan has been working as planned and the summer transition continues to improve each year. Staff continues to work closely with the United States Golf Association (USGA) on updated practices to continue to improve. The USGA comes out every year to evaluate the courses and they are very happy with the success of the program. All golf courses in the Southwest go through transition 2 times a year, the Fall and the Summer. Each course goes through the summer one at different times which can affect their playability/look of when you are playing it. Many things go into how well a course transitions. n Proper irrigation (head spacing, nozzles, low heads, pressure, water quality) n Course traffic/play in the winter months n Types of Bermuda grass n Overseeding practices n Weather The staff appreciates your patience and support as this necessary work is performed for the long term success of the golf program.

As conditions improve, it is easy to forget the struggles faced five years ago. Extensive sodding was needed in 2008 on No. 8 Cimarron to provide bermuda grass coverage prior to overseeding. Chronological photographs show that conditions improved in the first few years and have leveled off. The next step will be to improve irrigation uniformity.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

Poor circulation. Poor digestion & issues with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) n Fatigue, neckache, headache & dizziness. n Jaw pain, known as TMJ n Depression, lack of self-confidence. n n

Allison Adams Fitness Manager

The answer is a resounding YES! As we age, one of the main goals a person should have is to improve functional fitness and balance. This should be a goal at any age. And as a Certified Fitness/Health Professional (since 1990) working with the Active Aging Populations, I can tell you first-hand the price people pay for ignoring posture issues. Chronic pain, poor balance, falling, digestion issues, circulatory issues and joint pain can all be attributed to getting older but also can be symptoms of poor posture. Ask yourself, do you suffer from one or more of the following? n Lack of flexibility and normal range of motion (ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, etc.). n Lack of strength and poor balance. n Breathing issues. Difficulty taking full, deep breaths.

The GOOD NEWS is you can improve your posture at any age! All it takes is information, corrective exercise and mindfulness. The best way to get started with improving your posture would be to find out how good or not so good your posture is. You can do this with a professional posture assessment. By taking a few minutes to learn what your current posture is, you can then create a plan to correct and improve your posture and improve your quality of life. See you in the Fitness Center. Michele

SCG RESIDENTS:

To sign up for a Posture Screening Assessment with Michele Zamora, please contact her by email at michele@ activeagingfitness.com or by phone at 623-764-7199. The cost for SCG residents is $59.

The posture screen consists of two posture images that are analyzed and show your posture points and report of findings. Based on this analysis, you will also receive your custom exercise program created especially for you showing the specific corrective exercises that are e-mailed to you with pictures and full description/instructions on how to do the exercises. You can do your posture screening exercises at home or at the fitness center. Michele also has opportunities in her small group fitness training program or individual personal training to make sure you are using the proper form with the fitness center equipment or to go over your Posture Screening Corrective Exercises.

EXERCISING TIPS:

If you are attending a group exercise class, working out in the gym (doing cardio or strength training) or exercising at home, ALWAYS REMEMBER to exercise with good posture! What does it mean to exercise with good posture? 1. Keep head in neutral position, eyes forward as much as possible. 2. Keep your chest lifted and shoulders back. 3. Contract your abs & brace your core. It’s very important to be mindful of your posture because you can inadvertently create “stronger bad posture” while exercising. For those with posture/muscle imbalances, there will be some exercises and exercise machines that you should avoid. For example, if you have a forward head position, neck issues, back issues or osteoporosis or osteopenia you may NOT want to do an over head shoulder press because it will place pressure on your neck & back and cause compression of the vertebra. You may instead want to do shoulder exercises with free weights, using one arm at a time and keeping your grip with your thumb on top so you can relax your shoulders and drop the humorous bone down in the ball/socket.

And Here’s Our Newly Elected President of the Board of Directors

homeowners.). Terry has taken on this challenge, to educate all of our residents so they can make an informed decision regarding the proposed CC&Rs. Basic to everything is our wonderful communitywide volunteerism.

It’s time for all of us to meet Terry Murphy, our newly elected Board of Directors President who has been a full time resident since 2014. Terry comes from a family tradition of volunteerism. His parents taught him that, “Giving back is the rent you pay for being on this earth.” While living in the San Francisco Bay area, Terry served as a volunteer director for both United Way and the Red Cross. He learned much from his fellow directors who were outstanding role models. We are fortunate to have a president who brings years of volunteer experience as a board director and a cando spirit. Terry believes in KIZMET, a Japanese term affirming that we are doing better today than we did yesterday, and we will do better tomorrow than we did today. Terry admits that the insider’s view of the workings of SCG can be a bit intimidating—17,000 plus residents, 300 employees, hundreds of acres. SCG is also awesome, ranked #1 in Arizona’s active

adult communities. Terry is committed to always doing what is best for SCG and its residents. Change happens over time, by consensus, with input from an informed population. And informing the total population of SCG remains a serious challenge. We learned during the current consent process, that in spite of holding dozens of town hall meetings, open discussions, articles in the LifeStyles magazine, email blasts, and volunteers knocking on doors, many hundreds of homeowners are not informed about what is happening and why changes to the current CC&Rs are so critical (Current documents were written by Del Webb for Del Webb the developer, not for

Terry encourages you to not be just a spectator here at Grand but get involved. If you are knowledgeable about life, more than just about your personal interests, you have much to share. If you are willing, open minded, have the community agenda in mind, you can make a difference here. Check out the various advisory committees (listed on grandlife. org) and volunteer for those that need your skill sets. Not quite ready to jump in as a volunteer? Get educated, attend some advisory and/or Board meetings, watch community based streaming videos posted on the website. Be sure to watch for email blasts for team projects that allow you to jump in-jump out. On Terry’s bathroom mirror there’s a sign: Live, love, laugh, learn, leave a legacy. Remember, what you do for yourself dies with you. What you do for others lives on.

➥ THERE HAS BEEN A VERY POSITIVE INITIAL REACTION TO THE PRESENTATION OF FUTURE FOOD AND BEVERAGE SERVICE IN SUN CITY GRAND. TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO REALIZE THIS VISION, THE PROPOSED CC&RS NEED TO BE APPROVED. 22

SO WHAT DO FOOD AND BEVERAGE IMPROVEMENTS HAVE TO DO WITH CONSENT?

FOOD AND BEVERAGE OPPORTUNITIES

A major source of funding NEED YOUR CONSENT for these projects will likely come from the CARE funds. The CARE fee is limited by the current CC&Rs to the amount of the annual dues. Everyone buying in Grand pays this fee — think of it as a buy in fee to the community. So, in order to increase the available money for these and other projects, the community needs to have the flexibility to set the CARE fee (which is among the lowest in the area) to a fair amount, which will benefit new home buyers as well as current residents (who do not pay that fee). You might ask: But won’t that make my house more difficult to sell? NO! Keeping the CARE fee artificially low actually hurts your home sale because not being able to invest in new and upgraded amenities will reduce your home's ultimate sale price.

TO FUND NEEDED IMPROVEMENTS, WE MUST CONSENT TO THE PROPOSED CC&RS! Please, if you have not consented, join the more than 5,500 homes who have already signed. Pick up a form or tear the form from the Grand Lifestyles magazine, sign it, turn it in. Your Consent today will help Sun City Grand make future visions realities.

SONOITA/ELGIN WINE TRAIL

KINDRED TOURS (FORMERLY TJ TRAVEL)

114pp

See page 54 for details At an altitude of 5,000 feet, surrounded by the Huachuca, Whetstone and Santa Rita Mountains, the Sonoita/Elgin Wine Trail is a cool escape from September’s heat. This region offers stunning views of the mountains in every direction and summer temperatures that hover in the mid-80’s. We’ll journey through the beautiful rolling grasslands of Southern Arizona, with our first stop for lunch, on self, on the patio of the Sonoita Café—serving fresh salads, sandwiches and burgers. After lunch we’ll head over to the award-winning Flying Leap Winery to explore a flight of 6 wines, included, along with a lovely souvenir glass. Flying Leap’s winery and distillery facility is one of the most beautiful wine venues in the American Southwest—a firstclass winery estate. Tasting in Flying Leap’s distillery is optional and on self. Hold onto your wine glass because we’re off to explore more of this scenic region--recognized as one of the top ten wine trails in the nation. We’ll stop by Deep Sky Winery where we’ll sample a flight of 5 wines, included at their indoor/ outdoor tasting bar, and enjoy their wraparound patio overlooking a wide grassy meadow. Afterwards we’ll explore as much of this amazing region as time allows. This is fantastic tour and we hope that you will join us!

Sonoita & Elgin History With summer temperatures in the high 80’s and twenty inches of annual precipitation, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the cool climate change as you climb out of the desert along scenic state Highway 83, just 45 minutes south of greater Tucson. The communities of Sonoita and Elgin were established in 1882 along the newly developed Santa Fe railroad running the length of Sonoita Creek and extending between the towns of Benson and Nogales. The area was first settled almost a half century earlier due to the vast cattle ranching and mining potential. The Sonoita/Elgin communities were preceded by the establishment of Fort Buchanan and Fort Crittenden. These short-lived forts were founded to protect settlers in the newly occupied region, but were soon abandoned: Fort Buchanan in 1861 due to the outbreak of the civil war (subsequently destroyed to avoid the fort falling into Confederate hands) and Fort Crittenden in 1873, near the close of the Apache Wars. The history of the Sonoita-Elgin Valley goes far beyond the current epoch. Archaeological evidence has demonstrated ancient occupation of the area as far back as 2000 BC, as well as documented Hohokam, possible Sobaipuri (ancestral

Grand Lifestyles | July 2019 | suncitygrand.com

relatives to the Pima, Tohono O’odham and Akimel O’odham tribes) and of course the Apache settlements, which was a barrier to new settlement for a number of years. During the 16th and 17th centuries the region saw a new wave of settlement and exploration in the form of Spanish missionaries and explorers, including such important historical figures as Fray Marcos de Niza and Father Eusebio Francisco Kino. Whether searching for gold, scouting a potential mission location, or mapping the unknown, an indelible mark was left by all that have come before, and has added to our colorful history and unique identity. Originally an area devoted primarily to mining and ranching, in more recent years a change has taken place. Although cowboys and miners continue to be a part of our western community, the Sonoita-Elgin Valley has seen a move from traditional ranching to some new avenues of development. The Sonoita-Elgin region now hosts numerous year-round visitors from around the world. From adventures in outdoor activities like hiking, birdwatching, camping and landscape photography, to enjoyable indoor activities of shopping and wine tasting in friendly award-winning wineries, Sonoita/Elgin offers it all. www.sonoitaelginchamber.org/

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

A Passion for Ping Pong

Participants in June 1 tournament at The Colonnade

Longtime resident of The Colonnade Don Schmidt is passionate about ping pong. He joins a host of older, active adults who are finding that table tennis is a game for all ages. “I started playing ping pong while I was in the Air Force in the early 1950s,” said Don, age 88. Ping pong took a back seat while he raised a family and earned a living, first as a drafting supervisor in an engineering department, then as an owner of several fast food businesses, as well as owner of a strip shopping center. Thirty years later, Don eagerly took up the sport again once he and his wife Gladys moved to Sun City West in 1980. After living in Sun City West and Sun City Grand for many years, the Schmidt’s decided to move to The Colonnade for peace of mind. “We wanted to make sure

our kids didn’t have to take care of us,” he said. In March 2008 they moved in as two of the community’s original residents. “We made our plans and now we have everything we need right here,” said Don. “Initially there were only about 30 residents. The Colonnade has grown since to more than 300 residents and there have been lots of great changes.” One of those changes was adding ping pong as one of the many Life Enrichment offerings residents enjoy while living an active, independent lifestyle that embodies the Masterpiece Living® principles of physical, intellectual, social and spiritual growth. Don formed the Ping Pong Club shortly after The Colonnade purchased its first ping pong table. Initially, there were approximately six members. However, interest, along with the community, grew. It’s now one of the more popular clubs and boasts more than 30 members. Members typically play four times a week. Tournaments are held quarterly and draw many participants and spectators alike. Don and The Colonnade’s Executive Director Dan Liguori coordinate the tournaments. Players are matched up as doubles teams, and then play in a double-elimination bracket. Don creates the tournament brackets as well as the winner’s plaque, which is updated quarterly and proudly displayed in the ping pong room.

TOURNAMENT WINNERS Colonnade EMT Duraid Anderios and Resident Don Schmidt

The latest tournament was held in June. Approximately 25 residents and four employees participated, while 25

spectators watched. Don and his partner EMT Duraid Anderios were the winners of the latest tournament.

The power of ping pong Living an active lifestyle is key to successful aging, and ping pong provides a number of health benefits including hand-eye coordination, improving mental acuity and reflexes. It’s also easy on joints for older players, improves balance and coordination and keeps the brain sharp. Ping pong has been called “The World’s No. 1 Brain Sport,” since it combines physical activity with spatial skills, cognition and social interaction. It also has the potential to help older adults with a number of conditions, including Alzheimer’s and dementia. Don agrees. After he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s three years ago, he credits proper medicine and ping pong with improving his walking and overall health. “Ping pong is easy to pick up and easy to learn,” Don says. ”Once you’ve played, you don’t forget how. It’s just like riding a bicycle.” Residents interested in joining the Ping Pong Club can contact Don for more information at (623) 584-4904. Don is just one of hundreds of interesting people living at and enjoying The Colonnade, an award-winning, vibrant Life Plan retirement community in the heart of Sun City Grand. Spot Imposters. Scammers often pretend to be someone you trust, like a government official, a family member, a charity, or a company you do business with. Don’t send money or give out personal information in response to an unexpected request, whether it comes as a text, a phone call or an email.

2

Don’t believe your caller ID. Scammers can easily fake caller ID information so the name and number aren’t always real.

3

Don’t pay upfront for a promise. Someone might say you have won a prize, but first you must pay taxes or fee. Hang up and pay nothing.

or MoneyGram is risky because it is nearly impossible to get your money back. Do not agree with anyone who ask for a gift card.

4

5

Consider how you pay. Credit cards have significant fraud protection, but some payment methods don’t. Wiring money through services like Western Union

Talk to someone. Before you give up your money or personal information talk to someone you trust. Con artists want you to make decisions in a hurry. Slow down, and talk to a trusted friend.

6

Hang up on robocalls. If you answer the phone and hear a recorded sales pitch, hang up. These calls are illegal. Don’t press 1 to speak to a person or to be taken off the list. That could lead to more calls.

7

2019 1st Quarter Volunteers Loren Hansen and John Soine 30

Be skeptical about free trial offers. Some companies use free trial offers to sign you up for products and bill you every month until you cancel.

8

Don’t deposit a check and wire money back. By law banks must make funds from deposited checks available within days, but uncovering a fake check can take weeks. If a check you deposit turns out to be fake, you’re responsible for repaying the bank. Hopefully the above advice will keep SCG residents free from all too common fraudulent scams. CHAPS will next meet on Tuesday, July 23 at 1:30 P.M. in the Sonoran Plaza. Training sessions for both Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol are available every month. All SCG homeowners are welcome to our July 23 meeting.

CULINARY CORNER CHICKEN PECAN SALAD

“The combination of sweet and spicy pecans and sweet berries in this chicken salad makes it a taste sensation! I have given tins of the pecans alone as gifts at Christmas time; they are delicious. The berries listed are suggestions; substitute whatever kinds you fancy, in whatever quantities! Makes a beautiful summer dinner.” Ingredients • 2 tablespoons hot red pepper sauce • 1/2 cup margarine, melted • 2/3 cup brown sugar • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1 pinch salt • 1 pound coarsely chopped pecans • 6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 tablespoon Greek seasoning • 1 pound romaine lettuce, torn • 1 cup cherry tomato halves • 1/2 cup fresh strawberries • 1/2 cup seedless grapes • 1/4 cup fresh raspberries • 1/4 cup fresh blueberries • 1/2 cup honey mustard salad dressing • Add all ingredients to list Directions Prep 15 m | Cook 30 m | Ready In 45 m Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a bowl, mix the hot red pepper sauce, margarine, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and salt. Mix pecans into the bowl, tossing to coat evenly. Spread pecans in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake 10 minutes in the preheated oven, stirring often and watching carefully, until lightly browned. Remove from heat, and set aside. Rub chicken with the olive oil, place on a baking sheet, and sprinkle with Greek seasoning. Bake 20 minutes or until juices run clear. Slice into strips. In a salad bowl, toss together romaine lettuce, chicken strips, cherry tomato halves, strawberries, grapes, raspberries, and blueberries. Sprinkle with pecans, and drizzle with dressing.

Mah Jongg Photo credits by Shirley Beaser

Each April, the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) sends out a new card. The Mah Jongg Club members strive to make “hands” with it. Players make winning combinations with the tiles in order to declare, “Mah Jongg”! At our “New Card” luncheon held on April 16th, not only did members enjoy making new hands, but they also were able to win fun prizes, enjoy great food, plus making new and renewing old friendships. A big thank you to Jan Hylen, President, for organizing the event, the New Card Committee which comprised Bette Grovdahl, Kate Hartman, Shirley Beaser, and Eileen Miller (of blessed memory). Have fun and learn to play Mah Jongg! Instruction is held twice a year, April and October. We invite you to come join us! CONTACT US AT:

DVD—DRAWING GESTURE IN CHARCOAL AND PASTEL BY CRAIG NELSON 60 MINUTES

A reference photo of a dancer allows Craig Nelson to emphasize gesture in a charcoal drawing and capture an exciting pose not possible with a live model. In this DVD workshop, Craig eases into the drawing by translating lines from his photo to his paper. He concentrates on angles and uses an imaginary grid and plumb lines to render a ghost drawing of his subject. Craig adds facial features and shadows early in the process but plans for later changes. Craig offers tips for effective shading. Modern, safe materials are used to paint the underpainting that is layered with beautiful transparent glazes. The final effect in the painting is that the objects glow with an inner light and life. You will see how you can slowly build the darks in your painting so that you get drama and depth that brings a painting to life. Free for all SCG residents | 12:30 p.m. | Art Club Studio

TICKETED EVENTS Tickets available online at www.suncitygrand.com or at the Activities desk unless noted otherwise. JULY 1 • MONDAY • KINDRED TOURS (FORMERLY TJ TRAVEL)

SUNSET CRATER VOLCANO & WUPATKI NATIONAL MONUMENTS Sunset Crater Volcano was created by a series of eruptions sometime between 1040 and 1100. Powerful explosions profoundly affected the lives of local people and forever changed the landscape and ecology of the area. Lava flows and cinders still look as fresh and rugged as the day they were formed. But among dramatic geologic features, you’ll find trees, wildflowers, and signs of wildlife. Explore an easy one-mile trail or enjoy the beauty of Sunset Crater from our picnic site where we’ll be serving refreshments. Later we’ll travel the scenic loop to Wupatki—the largest pueblo in the region. Less than 800 years ago Wupatki flourished as a meeting place of different cultures, despite its setting in one of the warmest and driest places on the Colorado Plateau, leaving us to wonder how and why—with no obvious food, water or comfort—did people live here. We’ll stop in historic downtown Flagstaff for lunch on self, before visiting these two remarkable National Monuments. Flagstaff is home to many wonderful restaurants, so there is sure to be something for everyone. *This trip is offered in conjunction with Kindred Tours. This outside contractor does not currently have any vehicles which can accommodate persons who are non-ambulatory. This destination is not recommended for non-ambulatory individuals as they do not provide assistive devices or pathways. This destination may require walking over unpaved surfaces, inclines, and significant distances. THE FOUR LAKES OF PRESCOTT & WHISKEY ROW There are four beautiful lakes in Prescott: Goldwater, Watson, Willow and Lynx. We’re going to visit them all, stopping first at Goldwater Lake, the jewel in the crown of the Prescott National Forest. From here we’ll head northeast to enjoy a spectacular driving tour of Watson and Willow Lakes. Known as the twin lakes, Watson and Willow are in the Granite Dells of Prescott, an area so scenic that it has seen more than its fair share of western movie shoots and was once home to the very popular Garden of the Gods Resort. An otherworldly stretch of gigantic boulders, Granite Dells runs along Granite Creek, with Watson and Willow Lakes sitting right in the middle making for the most remarkable of vistas. From here we’ll make our way to Lynx Lake, in the cool and pine-scented Bradshaw Mountains. So completely different from the twins, Lynx Lake is heavily wooded, and surrounded by tall Ponderosa pines, scrub oak and Manzanita. This lovely area is home to a wide variety of wildlife. We’ll be on the lookout for Albert’s squirrel, javelina, deer, and maybe even a mountain lion! We’ll begin this tour with lunch on self on Prescott’s famous Whiskey Row. Once a block of 40 saloons driven by the gold rush culture, Whiskey Row drew cowboys, gamblers, prospectors, bawdy girls and outlaws. Today Whiskey Row is home to not just its saloons, but also galleries, charming shops and antique stores and several wonderful restaurants. This is a refreshing summer tour. Escape the heat and come with us! *This trip is offered in conjunction with Kindred Tours. MISS SAIGON AT ASU GAMMAGE Miss Saigon is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby, Jr. It is based on Giacomo Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly, and similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover. The setting of the plot is relocated to 1970s Saigon during the Vietnam War, and Madame Butterfly's story of marriage between an American lieutenant and a geisha is replaced by a romance between a United States Marine and a seventeen-year-old South Vietnamese bargirl.. THE HEAT IS ON

The City of Surprise will be hosting its 36th Annual 4th of July Celebration on Thursday, July 4 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The festivities will take place at Mark Coronado Park, 15850 N Bullard Ave, as the Surprise Stadium will be undergoing renovations. This is a free event that will feature live music, food trucks, games, contests and more. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with the fireworks display at 8:40 p.m. Bring your chairs and blankets and celebrate Independence Day with the city.

Nancy Hayden Council Member, District 2

The city is having a quiet month as council is on recess and the summer is in full swing. During the summer months it is clear to see why this area is known as the Valley of the Sun. The sun wakes us up in the morning and puts us to bed at night. We have intense heat from the summer sun that radiates down to bring even our sidewalks to extreme temperatures! The sun damages and fades a multitude of objects and our skin is no exception. I’m sure you all know the hazards of UV rays, but as a friendly reminder, sun safety is important. One simple measure to reduce the risk of over exposure to the sun is limiting your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wearing clothing to cover the skin as well as hats and sunglasses is another effective way of protection. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), clothing made from tightly woven fabric offers the best protection. Dry and dark clothing also offers more protection than wet or light colored clothing. A typical T-shirt has an SPF rating of lower than 15, so please use other types of sun protection as well. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends using a sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher to protect against UVA and UVB rays. They also suggest to use sunscreen daily and reapply every two hours of being in the sun.

4TH OF JULY

heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat rashes are just a few. These are caused by a body’s inability to cool down properly. The body normally cools by sweating, but sometimes sweating isn’t enough. These illnesses are preventable if you stay in an air-conditioned area during the hottest days, wear light and loose fitting clothing, drink water as often as possible, avoid unnecessary hard work outside, and avoid unnecessary sun exposure. Avoid walking around barefoot and also be careful when touching door handles and other metal objects as they heat up very quickly. This summer, while you are enjoying outdoor activities, I urge you to take proper sun safety precautions and always have water close by.

FRIENDLY REMINDERS Sun City Grand residents are urged to obey traffic laws and restrictions. Please be mindful of your surroundings to help ensure a safe neighborhood! I would like to invite all of my residents to attend one of my monthly chats. I meet the second Wednesday of each month from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the Arizona Traditions Classroom. Please ask the gate guard for directions upon arrival. Additionally, I meet the fourth Tuesday of each month in the Sun City Grand Palm Center-Mediterranean Room (19726 N. Remington Dr.) at 10:00 a.m. Please stop by and hear about what’s going on in the city and discuss any questions or concerns you may have.

The summer also brings many heatrelated illnesses to our area. Heat stroke, Grand Lifestyles | July 2019 | suncitygrand.com

BEST TRAVELING APPS We’re heading out on our annual road trip next month to tour the USA. Every few years you write about new apps to enhance the travel experience…so what’s the latest and greatest this year? Judy and Ken from SCG

Dear Judy and Ken, There are several (free) iPhone and Android travel apps I would recommend-some new and some that have been around awhile but have been recently updated and are still extremely useful when travelling across country…or in your own locale. Since everyone needs to grab some calories throughout the day, especially when driving in unknown territory, these 3 apps are a must: n Yelp—helps you find more than just fast food eateries–like health food cafes, organic coffee shops, authentic local eateries, microbreweries, farmers markets, etc. n Zagat—if you visit the larger cities, you can find highly rated eateries by cuisine, price, service, decor, and quality. n Open Table—when you need a reservation, this app will check to see if there is an “open table” and make the reservation for you or you can also browse for food establishments by location, cuisine type, price, etc. Other useful apps when driving cross country are Waze to find faster routes and alert you to local speed traps. It uses

crowdsourced data which is updated in real time; Toll Guru shows and calculates tolls and gas for cars, motorcycles, RVs and SUVs towing a trailer (enter your car make, model, year, and gas price to determine costs); and the all-around favorite—Google Maps helps you find the shortest and quickest routes and alerts you when a faster route is available. For sightseeing out-of-the-ordinary attractions, check out the Atlas Obscura website (helps you to discover obscure but interesting attractions near your location: www.atlasobscura.com ) and the Roadtrippers app for everything else like amusement parks, sports venues, museums, lodging, historical markers, hiking, and more. Finally, the iExit app’s latest update makes it an all-around winner for information on just about everything along the interstates: rest areas, food (grocery stores, fast food, restaurants), fuel (including electric, unleaded, diesel, mid-grade, and premium), medical (hospitals, pharmacies, veterinarians), hotels (from truck friendly, pet friendly, family friendly, and more), campgrounds, RV parks, etc. While driving, the app locates exactly where you are on the highway and shows you upcoming exits

Special thanks to Sun City Grand resident Alice for submitting this very cute photo of her cat Rusty. View/print the digital version of “Ask Cappie” monthly column by going to www.grandinfo.com. Click on the More News>Grand Lifestyles Magazine> to choose the month you want to view. along with icons to represents amenities and how far away each place is from the exit. It will also show you how far you’ll have to travel off your route to find the establishment. Unfortunately, the app only works in the United States on major exit-based highways and you must have GPS hardware or a connection to the internet or cellular service to display the correct results based on your location. Enjoy your trip, drive safely, and remember, in many states it is against the law to text or talk on your device unless it is in hands-free mode!

SEPTEMBER 24, 2019 Remember the days of Rubik’s Cube, Super Mario, layers, lace, Pac-Man, and Madonna? 80’s DAZE transports their audiences back to the great music of the 80’s and then some!
