Freedom Plaza Residents Are Saying….
Alone and lonely in my former Sun City home? No thanks!
We didn’t miss a beat here – lovely meals every day, swimming & exercise classes.
I can’t imagine being anywhere else during the pandemic!
N Now more than ever it is clear the importance of having a plan for the future. A plan that is affordable for today and secure for tomorrow.
My friends in Westbrook Village, PebbleCreek and Ventana Lakes couldn’t use their Rec. Centers. Not us! We were on the Pickleball courts 3 times a week.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
THE SCIENCE OF GRASS ON THE GOLF COURSE n
n
n
n
n
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
When Sun City Grand was built and was actively selling homes, the key focus for the golf courses was to have the best winter conditions and hold onto the ryegrass as long as possible into the warmer summer months. This plan worked well to help sell the homes quickly and to have the ryegrass “hang on” longer to have better playing conditions longer into the summer months. This plan proved to be negative in the long run for the health of the base grass; Bermuda grass. Every year this practice was done, it was depriving the Bermuda grass of the opportunity to have 100 days of noncompetitive growth which started to weaken the base. In 2008, it was the year that the Bermuda grass “gave up” and the conditions in the fairways were poor. It was at that time the Sun City Grand Board of Directors accepted
10
the plan that was presented to them by staff to put as much emphasis on summer golf as is put on winter golf. The plan included the following which include some modifications that were changed over time to improve the process. n Remove the winter ryegrass with a selective herbicide. This would remove all of the competition for the Bermuda grass and show all of the weak areas on the golf courses.
n
n
Close the courses for 3 weeks each and treat them just like a fall overseeding. Staff would aerify the golf course pulling cores. An outside contractor would then deep tine the fairways with ¾ inch solid tines. The ground was so hard the first couple of years that the tines would bend or snap. An outside contractor would spread 35 tons of sand per acre on the fairways to build them up to create a better growing condition for Bermuda grass. Put down sod in areas that have no sign of Bermuda grass growth in a 100 square foot area. This was about an acre or more of sod per golf course when the program first started and there are almost no areas today that fit the original criteria for sodding. Remain on cart paths only for 3 weeks to allow the grass to fill in. (Treat the summer transition similar to the fall transition.) Double aerify and heavily topdress the greens to create less interruptions during the summer golf when this practice needs to be done.
3/4 inch solid tines that were bent or split during the beginning years of the summer transition program
Grand Lifestyles | July 2020 | suncitygrand.com
n
In the fall, reduce the amount of seed from 700 pounds per acre in the fairways to 550 and the roughs would go from 450 to 350. This would create some off color but would be less stressful to the Bermuda grass.
The plan has been working as planned and the summer transition continues to improve each year. Staff continues to work closely with the United States Golf Association (USGA) on updated practices to continue to improve. The USGA comes out every year to evaluate the courses and they are very happy with the success of the program. All golf courses in the Southwest go through transition 2 times a year, the Fall and the Summer. Each course goes through the summer one at different times which can affect their playability/look of when you are playing it. Many things go into how well a course transitions. n Proper irrigation (head spacing, nozzles, low heads, pressure, water quality) n Course traffic/play in the winter months n Types of Bermuda grass n Overseeding practices n Weather The staff appreciates your patience and support as this necessary work is performed for the long term success of the golf program.

As conditions improve, it is easy to forget the struggles faced five years ago. Extensive sodding was needed in 2008 on No. 8 Cimarron to provide bermuda grass coverage prior to overseeding. Chronological photographs show that conditions improved in the first few years and have leveled off. The next step will be to improve irrigation uniformity.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
A Return to Training and Summer Hydration Tips Allison Adams Fitness Manager
This months article is contributed by
Charles Crevequer SCG Personal Trainer and EXOS Sports Performance Specialist (623) 337-3558 A good many Sun City Grand fitness enthusiasts have been unable to train in a focused and meaningful way during the State-mandated closures due to Covid-19. Even though I have a very elaborate gym in my home, it proved really challenging to motivate myself to use it. Now that we have reopened, I have a lot of catching up to do with my own exercise regimen. And like many of you, I welcome the opportunity to start back in such a professionally managed and equipped facility like Sun City Grand. In this article, I want to get into some detail on how our newest program can be used to help you “return to business” with your workouts. The EXOS Circuit and Performance Kiosk provides an invaluable, useful and easy-to-follow methodology for doing just that. And depending upon how it is programmed, it can be adapted over time to enhance your sports specific training.
14
The Performance Kiosk is a collection of short, looping exercise videos that I can customize for virtually every aspect of training. With more than 725 videos to choose from, I can emphasize different types of training and benefits such as warming up and cooling down, stability, flexibility, mobility, movement and strength in all three body planes. The combinations are almost limitless and residents can get the training they want, when they want it. There are a total of six monitors that I can program, with up to four exercise videos displayed on each. Generally I program the monitors a minimum of 2 times per week, though my ideal target is 3x per week. Thus, within a period of two weeks, SCG can provide residents with exercises for every body part and nearly every movement pattern. In addition, I can also target specific areas of the body where our demographic can have unique issues, like shoulders, the back and knees. Furthermore, for residents who have recently completed a rehab program and want to continue improving on their own, we can provide that exercise continuity. There is one final benefit to the EXOS Performance Kiosk that may be helpful to a small cohort of residents, the concept of prehabilitation. I can put together a series of exercises that can prepare your hips or knees or shoulders for an upcoming surgery, so that your ability to recover is enhanced while also focusing on creating supportive strength for any/all muscles, tendons and ligaments involved. It is a highly researched and extremely professional approach to the unique nature of training at Sun City Grand. And everything EXOS at Sun City Grand is free to residents, so why wouldn't you be interested?
especially in hot, dry climates, our sensation of thirst diminishes; “normal” thirst kicks in only after you are already dehydrated. To preemptively combat dehydration here in Arizona, we have to create a strategy, a Hydration Strategy, on how to safely and effectively maximize the body's water and sodium reserves.
Proper Hydration Becomes Even More Important as We Age 60+ individuals are also more susceptible to dehydration or hypo-hydration than younger adults. It's due to a blunted thirst response as well as an impaired ability of the kidneys to conserve water and sodium. Aging also causes other alterations in normal physiology that increase the risk of dehydration. Sweat rate changes, our kidney function affects fluid transport, and vacillations occur in electrolyte levels and blood flow responses. We must be vigilant about our hydration needs and create and use strategies to keep sufficiently hydrated during the physiological stress of exercise. To add to the complexity of hydration, many 50+ athletes take medications that contribute to the loss of body water. Among these are blood pressure medications that also serve as diuretics, increasing water loss. When you add other common, mildly diuretic fluids like caffeine and alcohol, hydration becomes even more critical. An easy way to assess hydration is by monitoring urine volume and color.
Summer Hydration for Seniors As temperatures increase, we who are active exercisers need to pay special attention to our hydration and to our electrolytes. When we exercise, Grand Lifestyles | July 2020 | suncitygrand.com
FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER maintain blood sugar and fuel working muscle. Just beware of artificial colors, flavoring agents, artificial sweeteners or preservatives. How much hydration? ½ oz of water per pound of body weight per day is a good start. Generally, water is a matter of personal taste, so try various brands and pH levels. I go with a higher 8.0 + pH water and add my own electrolytes.
Dark-colored urine usually means dehydration, although some dietary supplements and prescription drugs can affect urine color and volume too.
Plain Water Is Not Enough When you exercise, your body loses water, but it also loses electrolytes like sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. While all electrolytes are important to your body’s function and performance, sodium is perhaps the most important electrolyte, because a decrease
in sodium concentration can have some extremely negative consequences. There can be anywhere from 400 mg to 1200 mg of sodium in each liter of sweat. Since sweat has both fluid and electrolytes in it, drinking water alone (especially distilled water) can be really dangerous. This is the fastest way to decrease or dilute your body’s concentration of sodium. Most sports drinks contain water, electrolytes and some form of sugar to provide a small source of energy to help
For electrolytes, I use Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix. Its electrolyte profile actually matches what is lost in sweat (800 mg sodium, 80 mg potassium, 100 mg calcium and 80 mg of magnesium per liter). For training on an extra hot day or over a longer duration, I switch to Skratch Labs Hyper Hydration Drink Mix. It has a much higher sodium content (1720 sodium and 150 mg potassium) than the Sport Hydration and will pro-actively increase the body's water and sodium reserves. Drink at least 30- 60 minutes before extreme exercise. You are welcome to contact me with any questions! Train hard, but train smart!

FROM THE BOARD
A NEW FUTURE Finances
Don Love President Sun City Grand
Welcome to our first magazine since the Covid 19 virus began. The last three months have been very hectic for all of us. The Board had to quickly put together from scratch a plan to find our way through the issues we faced as life changed for everyone. Getting a grasp on how to proceed in such a situation was rather surreal. There was no person, no agency and no phone number in the world that could tell us what to do. But so far SCG has prevailed as we make our way back. We are aware that some residents would like to proceed faster but we will stay the course we have chartered for the best benefit for everyone. Keep in mind we had to draw a line separating what we could and could not do at any given time to achieve the safety we needed and yet allow for amenity enjoyment.
n By
the time this magazine gets to press we will have held a Town Hall on the redevelopment options for the Village Center n An upgrade of the Cafe to provide a spirits bar and evening socialization is in the works. n A buildout and remodel of the Cimarron Center is in the planning stage. n A replacement of the greens on Granite Falls South while upgrading the entire course.
We were not sure what we would be facing financially when the shutdown was put into place. In order to protect our budget we cancelled or delayed over 1 million dollars of Capital projects for this year as a start. Luckily we were able to keep golf open and due to record revenues for the last two months our finances are projected to be much better than expected. But, enough of Covid-19 for the moment. Let’s talk about our future beyond what we are going through now. No matter what the inconveniences are as we go through this pandemic we have to look through to the time when we will all be able to return to a more normal enjoyable life here at Grand.
And more
What awaits us n We
have approved the Care Fee for new homeowners who move in which has the potential of doubling the amount of Care funds each year. n We are in the final stages of choosing our F and B partner here at SCG n We are in negotiations for the remodel and buildout of the Granite Falls Restaurant facility that will take the place of CoCo’s.
So many of the plans that the Long Range Planning Committee and the Board have been working on are coming to fruition over the next few years. Best of all the above will be funded mostly by Reserves and the CARE Fund. So let’s stay focused on keeping safe until we get through all of this but remember we won’t let the Covid Virus get us down. We have a future to live. Don Love President SCG

GRAND NEWS
SPECIAL EDITION
JULY 2020
Open letter to Sun City Grand Homeowners: In the past, you may have received reminders from us to sign your consent forms to ensure a more solid foundation was set to help maintain the value of our homes. This letter is to be certain you heard that on March 31 we received our 6,568th signed consent, reaching the required consent from 67% of properties. In fact, after achieving our goal, the total received exceeded 6,700 validated consents! YOU DID IT...OUR NEW CC&Rs ARE NOW LEGAL and have been placed on the website under Administration, Governing Documents, along with the updated Bylaws which passed last May. Since the social distancing guidelines due to the coronavirus pandemic were already in place on March 31, the members of the Consent Committee have been unable to publish this note of gratitude and to celebrate that momentous accomplishment with you. THE CONSENT COMMITTEE WANTS TO SINCERELY THANK the homeowners who signed a consent form and for all who put up with our polite, yet what might have seemed an occasional in-your-face strategy over the past three and one half years. We are convinced it was well worth it, and hope soon you will find it was too. The community is planning a celebration at a time when it is safe to do so. Please join us if you can. More information to follow. In appreciation, The Consent Committee Grand Lifestyles | July 2020 | suncitygrand.com

FROM THE COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT
LET'S ZOOM
Zoom far, Zoom wide, Zoom through the sky! Sun City Grand took off and is soaring high through the trying times of the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of technology. From the very early stages of the COVID-19 shutdown, our lives were shaken up, and we were placed in an unfamiliar position of disconnect. We dug deep for ways to stay connected with our residents, even though we could no longer interact face-to-face until it was safe to do so. We knew we had to show the community that when the going gets tough, we get going! Then finally, we came across a new tool to reconnect us from even the farthest of places. This would lead us to the beginning of a new era.
You can expect Zoom to stay with us for a while, as the ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic still exists.
Zoom, a web-based video conferencing tool with a local, desktop client and a mobile app that allows users to meet online, has launched the community into soaring heights. Sun City Grand, whose average age consists of 65+, has tapped into the digital age and is continuing to operate meetings on a virtual platform. Before the shutdown, our meetings would be held in the community buildings such as the Sonoran Plaza, The Palm Center, or the Chaparral Center. Typically, attendance from the in-person Board of Directors’ meetings would range between 20-75 persons, depending on the meeting. Now, through utilizing Zoom meetings, we have sky-rocketed virtual
attendance averaging about 265 persons per meeting. Can you believe it?
So where do we go from here? There’s only one direction we can go, and that is up. The LongRange Planning Tech Subcommittee has bright ideas for further advancing our community into the 21st century. Check out the Long-Range Planning on www.suncitygrand.com (homepage>association>board advisory committees>long range planning advisory committee). On top of Zoom, we will incorporate newer technology to knit the connection between our community and the outside world as well. Zoom has proved to be a stepping stone in the right direction.
Change can be difficult, but for this community, the word “change” is seen as “opportunity.” An opportunity to share ideas, thoughts, and expertise to move this community higher and higher. Zoom has given us the opportunity to reconnect and continue operations for meetings. You can expect Zoom to stay with us for a while, as the ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic still exists. Although this is a new technology, we would like to thank all of our residents for adapting to our new position and riding along this journey with us. Tighten your seatbelts; this community is Zooming to another level.
COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT A three-person team working together to bridge the connection between internal and external sources. FROM THE TECH TEAM
MORE TECHNOLOGY DEEMED
“A GOOD THING”
IN SCG TECHNOLOGY SURVEY
Even in the summer, with so many residents gone, 1459 of our neighbors took the time to answer questions about their current technology use, and gave input on potential future technology for our community. We thank all of you who reached out to friends and neighbors who may not still be in Grand in May – or who might not receive the daily e-blasts, for making this a valid (statistically significant) and impactful survey. We got a good representative sample of all age groups – from those who have just moved here and those who have
been here a long time. That population spread really helps lend credibility to the survey. The only group we missed are those without computers at all – so we do need to remember to take them into consideration as we plan. The Tech Team (a subcommittee of Long Range Planning) was heartened to hear that 77% of our residents find technology either “pretty easy” or “getting more comfortable all the time.” This tells us that there is a willingness to try
new things and even an appetite for more – as was seen in the “hot button” comment section.
4
The top five “must do” items for the near future include:
5
1
Faster and more reliable public Wi-Fi with more coverage in our common areas
2
Making our CAM cards (or successors) more able to do things including register for classes
3
Provide more places on campus to plug in to a USB outlet and charge our devices
More automation of forms – ARC, room reservations, club applications, etc. A more robust ticketing application
Our website got mixed reviews with 35% or more of our residents not ever connecting to it! Of those who do use it, fully 57% found it easy to use. The most popular tab was Golf and the most popular item was News of the Day. We now have over 7,500 people receiving our daily e-blast – the best

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
THE COLONNADE:
ENHANCING RETIREMENT WITH EMOTIONAL, SPIRITUAL SUPPORT “Our chaplains are trained to be with our people wherever they are,” says Rev. Klumpenhower. “We’re there to celebrate life’s joys and we’re there when people are confronted with death, darkness and heartbreak. We’re like firefighters that run into burning buildings. We run to the hard places.” Spiritual Life programs and activities reflect and celebrate many faith traditions. They include traditional religious activities, as well as non-denominational discussion groups, learning opportunities, counseling and more. Staff provides outreach to various faith-based communities including Catholic, Protestant and Jewish. Events like Shabbat meals on Friday evenings, weekly communion, world religions education, volunteer opportunities and field trips are customary. The Colonnade, in Sun City Grand, believes that aging successfully depends more on the lifestyle choices we make rather than just genetics. It’s the reason the community subscribes to the Masterpiece Living® (MPL) philosophy that it’s never too late to make the right choices to age more successfully. All of its programs, activities and events focus on MPL’s four components of a healthy lifestyle: n Physical activity n Social interaction n Intellectual stimulation n Spiritual engagement Spiritual engagement plays a more critical role as we age so that we feel supported in living our best lives. Rev. David Klumpenhower, Sun Health’s corporate director of Spiritual Life who is also the interim executive director at The Colonnade, believes the role of spirituality is important for positive, successful aging. Whether you call it religion, faith, or a belief system, spirituality often provides 22
structure, meaning and understanding to everyday life, as well as support during challenging times like we’re seeing now. “Spiritual life at The Colonnade is about so much more than worship services and gatherings,” he says. “It’s about faith, opportunities to socialize, celebrate, learn and grow, as well as gain comfort during life’s more difficult moments.” Life Enrichment Director Paula Sikes agrees. “At The Colonnade spirituality can mean many things, but we really focus on ‘purpose,’” she says. “It’s a reason to get out of bed every morning and live your best, meaningful life right now.”
SUPPORTING RESIDENTS WHEREVER THEY ARE The Spiritual Life department provides emotional and spiritual support to residents under the guidance of three faith leaders: director Rev. Klumpenhower, and chaplains Rev. Alrick Headley and Rabbi Mindie Snyder.
“We care for everyone spiritually and emotionally,” says Rev. Klumpenhower. “It doesn’t matter if they don’t belong to a specific religious faith. Sometimes there is a need for worship, and sometimes there is a need for counseling. We help people develop inner resources and spiritual strength to better prepare for life’s changes and transitions.” Those transitions are a big part of the Spiritual Life ministry. “Transitions come with loss or grief,” says Rev. Klumpenhower. “Whether it’s moving from home to hospital, or from hospital to a health and rehab facility or even the death of a spouse. We help residents deal with loss by providing grief assistance and support.”
GIVING BACK Giving back is another important component of spiritual life at The Colonnade. “Residents give back to our community through donations, volunteerism and giving of their time, talents and abilities,” says Paula. “They have volunteered at animal shelters, food banks and in schools. Residents have donated to worthy organizations like Grand Lifestyles | July 2020 | suncitygrand.com
CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE the local police department’s Domestic Abuse Unit, Toys for Tots and made mats for the homeless, pillow cases for kids at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and so much more.” For the past two years, residents and team members have supported Operation Thanksgiving to support Sun Health team members in need. Residents raise funds to provide full Thanksgiving meals. “It’s a great way for residents to give back,” says Rev. Klumpenhower. “In 2019 residents raised more than $2,000 to fill more than 70 boxes.”
LIFELONG LEARNING A big focus for the Spiritual Life department is education. “People have a desire to learn about other faiths,” he says. “We offer book studies, bible studies and bring in experts for classes on ethics and world religions.” In pre-Coronavirus times, residents have gone on field trips. They’ve visited temples, a Greek Orthodox Monastery, mosques and Buddhist temples. In 2019, Rev. Klumpenhower led a
trip to Israel for 23 residents. “To see a 93-year-old weeping at experiencing the Holy Land was very emotional,” he says. “I hope to plan a trip every three years, with the next one tentatively scheduled for fall 2021.”
SPIRITUAL LIFE DURING CORONAVIRUS Because of the restrictions due to the Coronavirus, Spiritual Life members are doing things differently right now. “We’ve cancelled all services until further notice,” says Rev. Klumpenhower. “But people still need care, they still want communion. So we are visiting residents in their homes, as long as no one is sick. We’re doing one-on-one counseling and are visiting people who are lonely and anxious.” “Whether through prayers, counsel or sitting by their side, they know they aren’t going through it alone,” he says. “It’s our privilege to light the way however we can.” Rev. Headley is also publishing a weekly newsletter called “The Spirit of the Times” for all three Sun Health communities.
“It’s been amazing, and a terrific way to connect with the residents,” Rev. Klumpenhower added. “It’s opened many doors for relationships with our residents and staff. Both Headley and Snyder have conducted Zoom meetings, home deliveries for special days such as Passover and Easter, a trumpet concert for The National Day of Prayer. Rev. Headley also lead a prayer phone tree, and Rabbi Snyder led a blessing project for the communities. Other activities include daily phone calls, one on one meetings, counseling over the phone, cards, personal communion and more. Throughout this experience, our community has taken proactive steps to mitigate risk and exposure to the Coronavirus on our staff and residents, and we have been very successful to date. One thing that has remained constant is that our absolute priority is keeping our residents and team members safe, along with their families. How to Protect Yourself and Others Know how it spreads • There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). • The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. • The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. » Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). » Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. » These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. » Some recent studies have suggested that COVID-19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
Everyone should Clean your hands often • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact • Stay home if you are sick. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Put distance between yourself and other people. » Remember that some people without symptoms may be able to spread virus. » This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick. www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/peopleat-higher-risk.html

FROM STANDARDS
About Tree Topping Now that Spring is in full swing the community’s attention always seems to swing to landscaping. Today’s topic is about “topping of trees.” Some landscapers have chopped trees to an extreme state. Here is some information provided by your SCG Management Representative about why this type of hard pruning is not recommended: Topping a tree does not rejuvenate it – topping kills trees. Similarly, hard pruning a shrub will not rejuvenate it; which is why it is no longer a plant management practice here at Sun City Grand. 1. Starvation.
Topping kills trees by starving them. Trees need leaves to create food or starches during photosynthesis. Topping removes the leaves so that a tree is unable to provide the roots with this necessary product. Death is certain.
2. Shock. The tree crown is a protective barrier to the bark, shading it from harsh sunlight. Sudden removal of the leafy protective layer exposes the bark to sunscald. Neighboring trees used to shady conditions, may be adversely affected. Poor health and death often occur. 3. Insects and disease.
Large wounds resulting from tree topping have difficulty closing. The location and size of the cuts prevent the tree’s natural defense system from functioning. The stubs are open wounds that invite insect invasions and the spread of decay fungi. 28
If decay is already present in the limb, cutting will only speed the spread of decay. 4. Wind Damage.
Topping creates new weak limbs and causes the tree more damage due to high winds. Many new limbs sprouting from the cut of the larger branch are weakly attached to the parent branch. Growing limbs attach to the larger branch with layers of wood that overlap year after year. Limbs gradually enlarge with the parent stem. Topping trees does not help them survive strong winds.
Here is what the
Tree Topping Information By: Jackie Carroll Does Tree Topping Hurt Trees
Many people think that you can shorten a tree by cutting off the top. What they don’t realize is that topping permanently disfigures and damages the tree, and may even kill it. Once a tree is topped, it can be improved with the help of an arborist, but it can never be completely restored. Read on for tree topping information that can help you make better decisions about shortening trees.
Design Guidelines for Sun City Grand say about maintaining your landscaping:
What is Tree Topping?
Trees and shrubs that are damaged, diseased or dying must be treated correctly; and when necessary, removed and replaced to comply with the minimum planting requirements, with the pre-approved plants as set forth in Appendix “A” of the Design Guidelines. n Trees and shrubs must be kept healthy and pest free. n Trees and shrubs may be allowed to grow to their natural size and form consistent with the genus and species. n Designs in landscaping softscape or hardscape that appear unnatural or cause a distraction or are otherwise limited or prohibited by the CC&Rs.
Read more at Gardening Know How: Tree Topping Information – Does Tree Topping Hurt Trees https://www. gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/tgen/tree-toppinginformation.htm
n
Topping a tree is the removal of the top of the central stem of a tree, called the leader, as well as the upper main branches. They are usually sheared off at a uniform height. The result is an unsightly tree with thin, upright branches called water sprouts at the top. Topping a tree seriously affects its health and value in the landscape. Once a tree is topped, it is highly susceptible to disease, decay and insects. In addition, it reduces property values by 10 to 20 percent. Topped trees create a hazard in the landscape because the branch stubs decay and break. The water sprouts that grow at the top of the tree have weak, shallow anchors and are likely to break off in a storm.
Please inform your landscape contractor that this is NOT an acceptable practice in Sun City Grand. Grand Lifestyles | July 2020 | suncitygrand.com

FROM THE LIFESTYLES ADVISORY COMMITTEE
WHAT IS THE LIFESTYLES ADVISORY COMMITTEE? Some examples of concepts brought to the committee: n Ice and Water bottle fillers at the Pickleball and Tennis Courts n Closed captioning for Board meetings n More large print books at the library n Refurbish/repair softball field n More park benches for walkers around our community n Install shelves in bathroom stalls n Online Store n 15 automatic door openers throughout the community
Do you have an idea that might add to or improve the amenities that we have here at Sun City Grand? Great, you need to learn about the Lifestyles Advisory Committee (LAC), and what we do and how it affects the residents of SCG. The LAC was created by the Board of Directors in 2015 to listen to residents and assist in the continued success of SCG as the residential community of choice in the West Valley. We provide recommendations to the Board of Directors based on input from the residents and chartered clubs. Among the committee’s responsibilities: n Consider new or changes in existing amenities that would enhance the lifestyle of current residents and attract future residents to the community. n Consider lifestyle issues brought to the committee by residents. n Requests to expand or enhance current programs and existing facilities. n Make recommendations to the Board, as appropriate. 30
We are an Advisory Committee to the Board, so all concepts discussed by the LAC are forwarded on to the Board in adherence with a process called the Project Development Process (PDP), whether the committee supports them or not. This process can be found on the Sun City Grand website under Lifestyles Advisory Committee. The process starts by an individual or club filling out a Project Proposal Application, which can be found on the SCG website under LAC, or you can pick up a printed copy at the Activities desk. Give us as much detail as possible about your concept and drop the form off at the membership desk. We will then contact you to present your idea at our next meeting, where committee members and audience can ask questions. Once presented and voted upon at the meeting the PDP gets forwarded to the Board with the committee’s recommendation.
These are only some of the long list of ideas, issues and concepts addressed by the LAC in the past 5 years. We encourage residents to bring forward ideas that will enhance the SCG lifestyle and to follow what the LAC is doing for our community. While the PDP process may seem overwhelming at first glance, it has been designed by the Board to assure thoughtful decision making on its part. PDP applications are considered concepts, and enough detail is needed to give strength and meaning to each idea as it begins its journey. After initial LAC consideration, the Board evaluates the PDP at a workshop and then, should it accept the concept at the next Board meeting, it seeks more detail from the Association staff along with related costs and details needed to make it an actionable proposal. When fully developed, the Board then considers the proposal and may seek input from other committees before again considering it at a Board workshop and, at a Board meeting, subsequently voting for denial or implementation. We welcome attendance at our meetings (presently on ZOOM) held on the second Wednesday of each month at 1 pm in the Mediterranean Room at the Palm Center and we encourage your ideas and feedback on the lifestyle we enjoy at Sun City Grand. STOP! Put this article down and walk outside and check to see if the bulbs that light your house numbers are lit. They should be as they burn 24 hours a day. Your lighted house number is critical because it provides faster location of your home for emergency personnel. Replacement bulbs can be purchased at any hardware store. The duties of CHAPS volunteers appear below.
VACATION WATCH
When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center, as well as online at grandinfo. com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. Two criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the
request form. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.
EVENING PATROL
During evening hours, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. The volunteers look for breaches of security such as open garage doors, suspicious vehicles and/or people. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities.
DONATIONS
C.H.A.P.S. welcomes all donations. Those wishing to make donations may do so at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and designate “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.
NO MEETINGS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE EVERYONE IS WELCOME -MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH C.H.A.P.S. *Community Homeowners Association Patrol Service
TO VOLUNTEER
We are actively looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There are twoperson patrols where you select your days/evenings to volunteer and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer.

At this time, 17 of Sun City Grand’s 63 neighborhoods are without representation in the SCG Neighborhood Representatives (NR) organization. The 17 neighborhoods listed include 2,905 homes, 28% of the homes in Grand! If your home is in one those neighborhoods, you are not receiving monthly (or more frequent) communications from your Neighborhood’s own volunteer Representative to the NR group. (Generously, a few experienced NReps have volunteered to temporarily fill in for a neighborhood without representation.)

You can make a meaningful contribution to your fellow neighborhood homeowners by volunteering to act as their Neighborhood Representative. If you’d like to learn more about the role of a Neighborhood Rep, you may email Scott Banner, NRep for the Pima neighborhood. CLUB & INTEREST GROUP INFORMATION ARMED FORCES SUPPORT GROUP
You do “not” have to be a Veteran to belong to the AFSG, although many of our members are Veterans. You only need to have a desire to say “Thank You” to our active and Veteran military families and wish to continue to help many of them on their journey of healing. The AFSG has been very successful raising and donating money to vetted 501c 3 Veteran support foundations. Three of these foundations are within the state of AZ – Honor Flight AZ, Soldiers Best Friend, Foundation for Service Dog Support, and one national organization, Feherty’s Troop First Foundation. We would like you to join us in our mission of supporting those who have served, do serve and continue to serve and sacrifice so much to give us our freedom. For more information check out our website – scgarmedforcessupportgroup. “We shall never forget”
BOCCE
Please go to www.scgbocce.com for our latest updates. Everything relating to this club is in flux as this is being written. We will post the latest on our homepage. This club’s board of directors is very concerned for the health of all bocce players on our courts and we are finalizing plans so that the courts may be opened safely. We need to sanitize the balls as long as this covid-19 virus is a threat. When the summer winds down, like in September, we hope to begin organizing DROP-IN BOCCE, a popular event open to all Grand residents. At these events, we teach those who are new to the game and get everyone playing just for fun. Weather permitting, we will offer it on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings. Our league play will begin in mid-October providing we can do it safely relative to the virus. We will be opening up new leagues of 16 players each. We will announce the day and time of available openings, so keep an eye out for this in September.

DANCE CLUB
The SCG Dance Club is eager to get back to hosting our dances and dance lessons. To that end, we are closely monitoring data from the SCG Board of Directors, the pertinent advisory committees, and the CDC. At the moment, we do not see a path forward for the next several months. So, we have cancelled the August ballroom dance and all line dance lessons for the summer. We have learned that it is not safe for our dancers to dance indoors, without masks and to maintain physical distancing. We will post the latest information we have on the dance club website: scgdanceclub.org.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB THE SHOW MUST (AND WILL!) GO ON
The Sun City Grand Drama and Comedy club has been busy behind the scenes, working diligently to plan for a strong and safe return to performances for the Grand community. Since the quarantine began, directors for next year’s shows have been interviewed and selected, auditions were held and casts selected for the fall and winter shows, table reads (the first time the cast and director get together to read the script, discuss story line, and develop characters) have been held. All of these activities have taken place using Zoom for the safety of all involved. Meanwhile club members have also been researching alternatives for presenting theater productions. We’ve continued to stay abreast of industry best practices around the return of live theater, and have surveyed our season ticket holders about their preferences for a return. Finally, the Drama Club folks have worked closely with the Lifestyle Advisory Committee to develop strategies and tactics for a safe reopening of all Drama Club activities. Your Drama and Comedy Club is dedicated to coming back stronger and better than ever, and we can’t wait to see so many of our loyal patrons again as soon as (safely) possible.

Group hikes will resume in October (once our plan is approved by the Sun City Grand Board) with a few changes to circle up, carpooling and other practices. And, as a member of Grand Hikers, you have access to all of the club hike details (present and past) in order to enjoy your own private and small group hikes.

How to Start
AN ORGANIC HERB GARDEN Organic herb gardens spice up an all-natural landscape. Herb gardens burst with fragrance that pleases everyone and flavors that home cooks love. By Michelle Ullman
Garden Plans
Fresh herbs pack a powerful punch when used to season favorite dishes and many have health benefits too. Learning how to grow an organic herb garden is easy for all gardeners, even those who think they don’t have a green thumb.
Herb Gardening for Beginners
As with any plant, when growing herbs, you need to match the right plant to the right condition. Most herbs prefer a full-sun location
sun-loving herbs include: n Basil n Cilantro n Parsley n Thyme Herbs that grow in shade (or partial shade) include: n Chives n Mint n Tarragon n Lemon Balm Herbs grow best in welldrained soil amended with compost. Most prefer to dry out a bit between watering sessions, although there are exceptions. Basil likes to stay moist, and lavender needs to dry out completely between drinks. Don't use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides:
LOST & FOUND Have you lost something in the Village Area or out in the Community? If so, check at the Welcome Center to see if your lost item has been turned in.
Lost and Found is located in the Welcome Center in the lobby of the Palm Center. Open hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. Or you can phone 623-546-7501 and ask the volunteers to check for your lost item. Valuable items such as cell phones and jewelry are kept in the Membership Office. The Golf Courses and Fitness Centers keep their found items, so if you lost something there, please check at those facilities.

plant food and insect control.
How to Grow Herbs from Seeds Although nurseries often carry organic herb seedlings, many gardeners prefer to start their garden with organic herb seeds, which have been grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Most herbs are easy to grow from seed. Plus, planting seeds is cheaper than buying transplants. If you’ll be growing your herbs in a container, sow the seeds right in a pot filled with organic seed-starting soil. You can create a greenhouse effect by covering the container with plastic wrap until the seeds sprout. For an in-ground herb garden, you have two choices: Sow seeds in the ground once all danger of frost has passed in the spring. Or get a jumpstart on spring by starting seeds in small pots or growing trays indoors, then transplant seedlings into the ground once your Zone’s frost date has passed. Be aware, though, that some popular herbs, including dill, fennel, and chervil, don’t transplant well so should be sown where you want them to mature. If you plant directly in the ground, cover the seeds lightly with soil and keep them moist until they germinate. Most popular herbs are annuals and sprout within one to two weeks. You can get herb germination charts with
growing specifics online, in gardening books, or from your local extension office. Once your herbs are about 2 inches tall, it’s time to transplant them to their permanent homes. If you planted them in a container, thin out the seedlings so only the largest, healthiest plants remain.
Growing Herbs in Pots for Beginners Although herbs perform well in the ground and are wonderful additions to your vegetable or flower garden, many gardeners prefer growing herbs in containers. It’s easy to control soil conditions in a container, and you’ll be able to tailor the water to your plants’ needs. Just be sure to choose varieties with the same growing requirements when planting herbs together. When planning the mix of herbs for a container garden, there are nearly as many choices as there are types of herbs. One popular container herb garden design is to fill a strawberry pot with several different types of herbs—one per opening. Or gather a grouping of similar containers, and add interest by planting different types of

organic herbs in each pot. Other ideas for growing herbs in containers include: n Attach pots to a vertical lattice and fill them with small herb plants for a DIY vertical herb garden. n Fill hanging baskets with
trailing herbs like rosemary and creeping thyme. n Use half a whiskey barrel to grow your favorite cooking herbs. n Think of your herbs as decorative accents and combine them in attractive groupings as you would flowers. n Set your herb containers inside a large basket for a rustic look. n Create a tower of herbs by stacking terra-cotta pots of decreasing size and fill the space around each pot with a different herb. n Punch drainage holes in the bottom of an old child’s wagon, fill it with organic potting soil, and plant your favorite organic herbs. Instead of planting only flowers in your window boxes, mix in some pretty herbs, such as thyme, basil, or dill.

Planting an Indoor Herb Garden
every herb thrives indoors, many favorites do, including:
No backyard? No problem! As long as you have a sunny window—or are willing to set up grow lights if necessary— growing herbs indoors can be very productive.
n
The easiest way to start an herb garden indoors is with one of the many indoor herb garden kits available online or at garden centers. Kits generally provide everything you need— often including grow lights—to successfully cultivate organic herbs indoors.
Whatever organic herbs you include in your indoor herb garden, make sure to plant them in light, well-drained organic potting soil and let the soil dry out slightly before watering. You may find that herbs grown indoors in natural light—rather than under grow lights—are a bit leggier than herbs grown outdoors, but they will still taste great and add color, flavor, and interest to your favorite recipes.
But grow lights aren’t always necessary; try growing a collection of small herb plants in your kitchen window (so it is easy to snip some into your cooking), or set up an indoor herb planter in front of a south- or westfacing window. While not

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
BEWARE OF PHISHING SCAMS I got a text message from someone I think was pretending to be an IRS agent asking for information about my income tax but since I got an extension and have not yet filed I thought it was a scam. I deleted the text but now I’m worried it might have been legit. What do you suggest I do now? Flo from SCG
Dear Flo, Cappie can assure you that The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media (like Facebook or Twitter) to request personal or financial information. The actual IRS website, https://www.irs. gov/newsroom/tax-scamsconsumer-alerts, provides additional information about the new scams that are popping up every day,
especially during the tax season: What happened to you is a term called Phishing. It is the most direct method scammers use to contact unsuspecting citizens. They impersonate IRS agents, and of late, tax preparers such as H&R Block and TurboTax, usually over the phone, or via email and text message. They either claim that you owe taxes that were not reported and demand that
you pay right away to avoid punishment or threaten you with other severe penalties (imminent arrest, cancelation or suspension of your social security number, etc.) -- and then immediately offer you a quick and convenient method of payment using prepaid gift cards or via wire transfer. Another method is to send you an email or text message asking you to verify or update your personal information in order to avoid delays in receiving your tax return especially if you have not yet filed, or claim a discrepancy if you already have filed. Because the victims believe the communication is from the IRS, they send the requested information, and give scammers their personal data--which can result in identity theft, or targeted attacks where the scammer fraudulently files taxes on your behalf to receive your tax return refunds.

In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the canola oil, lime juice and zest, chili powder, cumin, garlic, jalapeno, and salt. Pour over the chicken, seal the bag, the gently “squish” the bag so that the chicken is coated with the marinade. Place the bag in a baking dish to catch any accidental drips, then refrigerate for 30 minutes or overnight. If using wooden skewers, soak the skewers in water for at least 20 minutes prior to use. When ready to cook, heat your grill to medium-high. Cut the bell peppers and
onion into 3/4-inch chunks, then thread onto skewers with the marinated chicken pieces, alternating the chicken with the vegetables. Lightly oil the grill, then place the kabobs on the grill, cover, and let cook until the chicken is fully cooked and no longer pink, about 6 to 8 minutes, turning the chicken once or twice throughout so that it cooks evenly.
Remove the chicken kebabs to a serving plate and sprinkle with cilantro and a few squeezes of fresh lime juice. Serve warm, garnished with salsa, sour cream, or guacamole as desired.

Wow! Who could have expected such an unprecedented turn of events as COVID-19, but we are working our way back! As we all navigate through these challenging times in our lives and here at Sun City Grand, please know you are all missed and we hope you are well. With the current limitations in place, Grand Learning has gone virtual. We have been utilizing Zoom to hold “online” classes. Thank you to those instructors that offered classes this summer. You are truly appreciated! We encourage instructors that are willing to try offering classes via Zoom, to contact the Grand Learning office. We plan on using Zoom until further notice. While the in-person social aspects of the classroom environment are important, there are definitely pros to using Zoom technology. You can still participate if you’re under the weather, or simply don’t want to leave your home; no need to dress up, and best of all, you don’t have to worry about a parking space! We have been working on and remain hopeful for a fall semester. Look for more information on our website and in next month’s issue of the Grand Lifestyles magazine. Until then, stay healthy and be safe! Happy 4th of July!
INSTRUCTIONS
In a medium bowl using a hand mixer, beat together cream cheese, powdered sugar, marshmallow crème, vanilla, and salt. Fold in mini chocolate chips, then place in refrigerator to firm up, 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, make coating: Combine mini chocolate chips, marshmallow bits, and crushed graham crackers on a shallow plate. When marshmallow mixture is firm, shape into a large round ball and roll in coating. Serve with graham crackers.

As a result of COVID-19 concerns, this year’s Fourth of July Celebration will be greatly modified in an effort to avoid mass gatherings and maintain physical distancing, in accordance with CDC recommendations. On Saturday, July 4th, the city will feature a 20-minute fireworks display beginning at 8:40 p.m. The display will be staged in the area around Bullard Avenue and Paradise Lane. The city encourages people to observe the fireworks show remotely from their homes or vehicles, as the display will be visible from vantage points across the community. Limited surface parking is available at Surprise Stadium, Surprise Aquatic Center and Dreamcatcher Park. While not recommended, should observers choose to drive to the Civic Center and Recreation Campus area, parking will be first come and must be done in accordance with state and local traffic laws. https://www.surpriseaz.gov/ Archive.aspx?ADID=10144

City Budget Update
The City Council approved the Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 City Budget on June 2. The adopted budget is a flat budget compared to the prior year, with minor increases, such as funding for the 2020 General Election, personnel, and contractual and service related increases for a total budget of $415.5 million. The FY 2021 budget is focused on providing flexibility for the fiscal year, as we work to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19. To learn more, please visit www.surpriseaz.gov/budget.
