Summer Happenings

As the golf courses slow down, staff have started to work on our summer projects. This includes summer transition cultural practices, the Granite Falls North renovation, turf reduction, and various other small projects. We would like to review some of these projects to provide some insight into the improvements being made.

The summer transition continues to progress. In May we applied a chemical to slow down the rye growth to allow the bermuda grass to takeover. In June we started our summer transition closures that consisted of aerifying tees, fairways, roughs, & greens as well as topdressing the greens & fairways. This cultural practice will allow weaker areas to thrive and fill in by allowing air & water deeper into the soil. Once the aerification is complete we put down fertilizer to promote regrowth and closure of the pulled cores on the playing surface. These practices are necessary for the long-term health of the turf and will assist in next year’s transition.

On May 15th we restarted the renovation on Granite Falls North. This includes bunker lining & new sand, bunker reshaping, green surfacing, & the installation of a new set of tees boxes. The contractor will be reducing the slopes on 14 of the 18 greens before installing the new mini verde grass. This provides staff with more options for pin locations as well as improve the playability for our residents. Several bunkers will be reduced in size or removed, which will allow staff to better maintain the bunkers while adding more approach options for the residents. Below is a great example of how the bunker surrounding 18 green will be reshaped. For more information on the renovation please visit www.livegrandaz.com for the complete renovation document.

DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS 8 Grand Lifestyles | July 2023 | livegrandaz.com

The turf removal project continues to progress as we work on installing gravel and irrigation for drought resistant plants in these areas. This process consists of killing the existing turf by eliminating the irrigation along with chemical applications. Gothic will then come in and install the irrigation lines for the new plant life. Once the irrigation is in place, they will put down the gravel. The landscape drawings below will give you an idea of what a hole will look like once completed.

Thank you, Brandon

You can reach out trainers by picking up a brochure at the fitness center front desk. Here are several compelling reasons why you should consider hiring a personal trainer:

1. EXPERT GUIDANCE: Personal trainers are trained professionals who have in-depth knowledge and expertise in the field of fitness. They understand the human body, exercise Physiology, and the most effective training techniques to help you reach your goals. With their guidance, you can be confident that you're performing exercises correctly and maximizing your results while minimizing the risk of injury.

They consider your strengths, weaknesses, and any limitations or injuries you may have. This personalized approach ensures that you're working out in a way that is safe, effective, and efficient, allowing you to achieve your desired results faster.

3. MOTIVATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY: One of the biggest challenges in maintaining a fitness routine is staying motivated and accountable. A personal trainer serves as your cheerleader, keeping you motivated, inspired, and focused on your goals. They provide continuous support, track your progress, and hold you accountable for your actions. Knowing that you have a scheduled session with a trainer creates a sense of responsibility and helps you stay committed to your fitness journey.

injuries. Personal trainers ensure that you're performing exercises with proper form and technique, which maximizes results and minimizes the risk of injury. They can also modify exercises to accommodate any existing injuries or limitations, allowing you to work out safely and effectively.

5. GOAL SETTING AND PROGRESS TRACKING: personal trainers help you set realistic and achievable goals based on your individual circumstances. They breakdown your long-term goals into smaller, more manageable milestones, making it easier to stay focused and motivated. Additionally, they track your progress over time, adjusting your training program as needed, motorcyclist so you're always moving forward and making continuous improvements.

designing efficient and effective training programs. They eliminate guesswork and optimize your training sessions, ensuring that you’re getting the most out of every minute you spend exercising.

7. LIFESTYLE AND NUTRITIONAL GUIDANCE: Fitness is not just about exercise; It's a holistic approach that includes nutrition and lifestyle factors. Personal trainers can offer guidance on healthy eating habits, proper hydration, sleep patterns, stress management, and more. They provide valuable insights and strategies to help you adopt A healthier and more balanced lifestyle that supports your fitness goals.

Hiring a personal trainer provides professional expertise, personalized guidance, motivation, accountability, and a tailored approach to fitness. We Want and Need You For C.H.A.P.S. Volunteer Service

We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. (including an application form to join) at livegrandaz.com – Volunteer Central – C.H.A.P.S. Resident Patrol

DBACKS SPOTTED IN THE GRAND

Article submitted by: Dennis Hanscom

In the last two months there have been 3 separate rattlesnakes (diamondbacks) in one neighborhood.  One of the homeowners had Rattlesnake Solutions inspect her yard for nests after her dog was bitten.  One of our C.H.A.P.S.* members helped pull a rattlesnake out of another

neighbor's garage on two occasions this spring.  Nick from Rattlesnake Solutions explained to our C.H.A.P.S.* member that a rattlesnake bite can easily cost $40,000 to deal with and in this area garage doors should be sealed properly and never be left open.  Rattlesnakes are always looking for a nice cave and an open garage door appears to be a nice attractive cave.  Please fully close your garage doors

and keep the snakes outside.

The summer heat is here!! We will be seeing more people out walking at night. (Please close your garage door when out for an evening stroll.) We recommend you wear light colored clothing, and even use reflective clothing if possible. When crossing in one of the crosswalks it is virtually impossible to see walkers wearing dark clothing until it is almost too late.

14 Grand Lifestyles | July 2023 | livegrandaz.com
Well, not exactly. Unfortunately, the Dbacks I am referring to are not playing at Chase Field these days.

The duties of C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers appear below.

VACATION WATCH

When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center, as well as online at livegrandaz.com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership

Office in the Palm Center. Two criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the request form. C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S.*

does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.

EVENING PATROL

During evening hours, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. The volunteers look for breaches of security such as open garage doors, suspicious vehicles and/or people. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities. As an additional reminder: when going out for an evening walk please close your garage door. If one of our C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers stop to let you know of your open garage door and finds no response to the ringing of your doorbell we are obligated to notify the Surprise Police Department to perform a courtesy stop at your home that evening.

TO VOLUNTEER

We are actively looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There are two-person patrols where you select your days/evenings to volunteer, and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer. Call the C.H.A.P.S.* office (623) 546-7553 if you may be interested in joining us.

GENERAL MEETINGS

We meet the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm at Sonoran Plaza. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, July 25. We welcome you to come to one of our meetings to learn more about C.H.A.P.S.*

Leaving your garage doors open: As previously mentioned rattlesnakes have been found in at least two garages in the past month. Please check daily to see if your garage door is closed. And, contrary to the belief that it helps to leave your door open a bit (18 inches) to let the heat escape that does not work! When it is 100 degrees inside your garage and 106 outside it will only allow more heat

to enter your garage. And, if you are leaving the door open 18 inches you are simply inviting someone or something to crawl into your garage. When your doorbell rings in the evening it is likely one of our C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers with a friendly reminder that your garage door is open, and we also stop when the door is slightly open.

C.H.A.P.S.* welcomes all donations. Those wishing to make donations may do so at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and designate “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.”

The Palm Fronds Rustle

The palm fronds rustle as I pass down Remington Way. First legs, then wheelchair, then walker, then cane.

They rustle as I go to work each day.

Calendars and scheduling be dam.

Each day unknown.

Resident issue, employee issue, club issue or more. Take it as it comes.

Twice the fronds trimmed.

One Village Center, restaurant, branding, space plan, monument. Twenty months realized.

Three hundred trained, ninety-eight 0 two records digitized, three Boards. Each day fulfilled.

The palms stand witness to the most important work done. Expert to generalist, soft spoken to assertive, buddy to boss. The student is ready, I take my leave. Take it grasshopper. Take it as it comes.

Remington is the way that leads me out. Right, then left, then right again.

It’s time to go home.

Sleep in, pool time, and no phone. Each day fulfilled.

The palm fronds rustle as I pass down Remington Way. First legs, then wheelchair, then walker, then cane. This time I’m going home…Farewell.

AN ODE TO GRAND’S MUSICAL AMBASSADOR

Contributed by The Grand Music Club

The Grand Music Club is missing David already and he has barely arrived in Colorado to heed the lure of children and grandchildren! The “David” in this case is David Durham, a valued member of the club since 2014. The club so appreciated his impact on Grand musical performances and training that they recently inducted David Durham into Grand’s Music Club Hall of Fame.

The designation as Ambassador is a result of the many innovations and extraordinary impact of David’s formidable talents as a performer, showman, band leader, comedian, director, producer, writer, composer, and teacher. He has hundreds of friends and fans in Grand and in surrounding communities. In addition, several of his endeavors resulted in about $25,000 in funds for local charities including senior care facilities and restaurants that suffered financially during the pandemic.

The Performer and Teacher

Probably most familiar to his legion of fans is the popular ”Salty Dawgs”, an acoustic folk music group of vocalists and instrumentalists. The Dawgs play primarily folk music from the 50s and 60s. The Dawgs are an outgrowth of the Acoustic Instrument Group (AIG) David started in 2015. AIG consists of stringed instruments and has generated other groups including “Gold Rush,” and “CBD Project.” David also teaches a music theory class at Grand Learning.

The Creator, Director, and Showman

Shortly after arriving in 2014, the Durhams produced and directed “Panning for Gold,” a show that located and showcased new Grand performers. Since then, he has served on the Music Club Board of Directors as Showcase Coordinator and started a new /songwriter group. Included in his list of accomplishments are13 Hootenanny Shows, a combination sing-along with both musicians and fans and “Music al Fresco,” a series of six free shows located at the under-utilized Grand Amphitheater by the lake. Among the most notable of his creations is “The Cruise,” an original musical comedy for which he wrote the music and lyrics for 11 original songs. The show was critically acclaimed and sold out each night.

A Talented Ambassador

No list of accomplishments can capture the major impact David Durham has had on the Grand Music Club. He not only brought in new audiences, he also sought, trained, taught, and encouraged musicians at all levels to have confidence in themselves. In addition, David created, directed, and expanded the club’s repertoire of resident-friendly sing-alongs and shows. Moreover, the Durham impact is felt by area residents, seniors, and business owners who benefitted from his generosity. Truly, David Durham is worthy of the appellation “Ambassador.”

2023-24 Board Of Directors

2023/2024 BOARD GOALS

goals

The Board reviewed the state of our community and established the following 5 goals. We will focus our attention and resources to support our community today and in the future. We will provide updates to these goals throughout the year.

GOAL 1: Develop Grand’s Technology Information Roadmap

GOAL 2: Complete the Pre-Design and Design Phases for Desert Spring Complex [DSC]

GOAL 3: Decide which Space Planning recommendations to implement

Board

GOAL 4: Food and Beverage - Compass Hospitality to Meet/Exceed Key Performance Indicators [KPIs] & Reopening of The Falls

GOAL 5: Project Management Decision - continue consulting services or bring it in-house

The Technology Information Roadmap is a comprehensive 3-5 year game plan defining goals and technology requirements to meet Grand’s long-range plan. It’s an important goal because technology touches everything we do, improves business operations and enhances your daily experiences as a Grand resident.

The Technology Advisory Committee [TAC] is focused on delivering the four roadmap components by the end of March 2024:

1. Current State of Assessment—Before we can build a roadmap outlining where to go, we first must understand where we are today. The assessment will include gathering information to analyze current strengths, weaknesses and opportunities in our technology, people, and processes. This analysis will be an important input into identifying our roadmap focus areas.

2. Community Strategies and Priorities

This step will consolidate and synthesize the Board, Committee and CAM strategies

where technology is required to play a role.

3. Technology Vision and Guiding Principles—Now that we know what we have and what is needed, this step focuses on how we see technology enabling the resident and management experience in the next five years along with defining our decision-making guidelines.

4. Roadmap Focus Area—Based on the work completed for the first 3 steps, this step defines specific goals, strategies and initiatives that can deliver the required technology over the 5-year plan.

In May the Board approved the resources to complete the first component of the roadmap, the Current State Assessment. If you would like to follow TAC’s work on this goal, then consider attending the monthly TAC meetings held on the third Thursday at 3PM. Also, you can read their monthly reports published in the Board Workshop’s agenda.

was an overview of 2023/2024
Goals and I promised to provide more details for each of the goals. In this article, I will focus on the first two goals and in August the remaining three goals.
1: DEVELOP GRAND’S TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION ROADMAP 20 Grand Lifestyles | July 2023 | livegrandaz.com
Goal

Large Project Development Process [LPDP]

This new LPDP process came out of a year-long work involving residents, professionals, and our staff. ALL projects over $200K will follow this process. Here’s the link to the LPDP:  https://livegrandaz.com/documents/10184/20992411/ Large+Project+Process+-+LPDP/b0d134c1-5510-4644-80e4998e15d57a01?version=1.0

You will see that the LPDP is a detailed process that each project begins with a Project Brief and proceeds through four distinct phases with Board approval at 7 different steps. The Large Project Teams, comprised of residents and staff, will be led by a professional project manager, and be overseen by a Board Liaison.

Goal 2:

COMPLETE THE PRE-DESIGN AND DESIGN PHASES FOR DESERT SPRING COMPLEX

The Desert Springs Complex [DSC] is a major project focused on enhancing both the food and beverage/dining experience and the available golf activities and amenities. This project is a stated goal in Grand’s Strategic Plan and it is following the newly adopted Large Project Development Process.

At the June Board Meeting, the DSC prerequisite project brief was on the agenda. During the discussion, there seems to have been some confusion that the brief was defining the project’s requirements. Let me take a moment to clarify. The purpose of the brief is to provide a high level overview of the possibilities of what the project could become. Many of these ideas came from residents who started to look at this project a few years ago. The Board approved the project to move forward and that is when the real work begins.

Phase One, Pre-Design

It is the discovery phase when the newly formed Large Project Team takes a deeper dive into the ideas for the Desert Spring Complex. The Team listens, documents and prioritizes the needs, wants and desires of the community and balances those with Grand’s strategic and financial goals. They represent the ‘voice of the resident’. This is done by reaching out to Grand residents and learning what is important to the community by conducting surveys, interviews, town halls etc. The Team may take months to complete the three key Pre-Design deliverables: Project Analysis Template, Community Input Summary and the Requirements Document. When ready, the Team will present their recommendations to the Board. The Board will review and vote on whether to move to Phase Two, Design.

Next month I will provide details on the remaining 3 goals. Meanwhile, I hope to see you at the July 13th Board Meeting and the July 27th Board Workshop.

Phase Two, Design

[DSC]

The purpose of the Design Phase is to establish a set of working construction drawing. To produce this, the Large Project Team will take several steps to ensure they accurately reflect the DSC’s requirements and are within the financial parameters. The Large Project Team will engage professionals such as an architect, landscape architect, interior designer, etc. The Team will seek Board approval for the DSC’s Concept drawing, Design drawings and the final Construction Drawings. The goal is to be ready to begin the Construction Phase when the restaurant is vacated in March of 2025

Here’s how you can support this goal. The Large Project Team will be reaching out to you to learn what is important to you. Please participate and provide your frank feedback. Stay engaged by reading their monthly reports published in the Board Workshop’s agenda.

This is the first of a five-part series that will look at 10 classic rockers and musicians who were also published poets. We’ll discuss the artistic personalities of each musician, listen to some of their music, and look at examples of their published poetry.

MUSIC CLUB

LIVE AT CIMARRON

Two nights a week, once a month, our local GRAND Music Club bands will play during the evenings for your pleasure in the Cimarron Club! Many of the most talented performers in the GRAND will be featured! Bring your own dry snacks and enjoy a fun, casual evening as you listen to new and old songs by new and old performers with favorites you can sing along with. On Friday, September 15, and Saturday, September 16, 2023, the first of this series begins with two of our homegrown bands: The Salty Dawgs and The CBD Project. This is a double billing with two for the price of ONE! A splendid time is guaranteed for all. While The Salty Dawgs continue to rely on music from the folk era, they have been expanding their repertoire to include a variety of western, country, and humorous songs. The addition of an accomplished fiddle player and keyboard musician has allowed them to include instrumentals and other well-known standards. They still love to encourage audience participation in a sing-along format.

The CBD Project takes its name from the three founding members Craig, Bob, and Dave. Not exactly what you might have been thinking, although they are both therapeutic. Some of the styles/ artists they feature include Lyle Lovett, Jerry Jeff Walker, the Allman brothers, Tom Petty, and a couple of original songs! Featuring all kinds of musical instruments - electric, steel, wood and whatever a banjo is made of. For questions contact Dave Williams at 503-706-4876.

Tickets can be purchased online at grandmusicclub.com or livegrandaz.com or go to the GRAND Activities Desk (Open M-F, 8 am to 4 pm).

MOMS LIKE ME SUPPORT GROUP

Moms Like Me is a support group whose goal is to reach out to the hurt and hearts of mothers who have experienced the loss of a child. Every day there are thousands of mothers who have lost a child who are living in the depths of despair, feeling they have lost all hope. Our support group falls under the banner of Umbrella Ministries, a network of mothers throughout the United States who have lost a child, and whose soul mission is to reach out with the Lord’s love, to broken hearted mothers. The ways of losing child can be quite broad, from infants to adult children, miscarriages, to a still born death of a full-term pregnancy. Other mothers have lost a child through suicide, a fatal accident or illness. The death of a child is different than any other loss and only a mother who has experienced that loss can relate to the grief that a mother is feeling. We plan to meet twice a month in Sun City Grand, location to be determined later. If you have any questions please call or text Nina Montgomery at 623-606-3160.

(For those unfamiliar with the term: “County Attorney” is the equivalent of “District Attorney” in other states.) Ms Mitchell has led a successful effort to restore trust to the office. She and her team are on track to fulfill the mission: keeping people safe, protecting the rights of victims and holding criminals accountable.

For our July 15 meeting we have two featured speakers: Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, who has announced that he will run for the U.S. Senate, and Jerry Sheridan, running for Sheriff of Maricopa County. Sheriff Lamb is the first prominent Republican to enter the race for the seat held by the now Independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema.

Jerry Sheridan has more than 38 years of law enforcement experience at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, including 33 years in leadership positions, rising from Corporal to Chief Deputy, the highest-ranking uniformed position.

On August 19 we will meet and hear from Mr. Jeff Zink, whose son Ryan has been wrongfully charged with trespassing on federal grounds on January 6, 2021. Ryan is innocent, yet is facing 22 years to life, if convicted. Jeff was also in Washington DC on January 6th, 2021 and saw first-hand what happened that day. While neither went into the Capitol, Ryan was charged with trespassing on federal grounds and buildings, entering the capitol, and crossing a barrier, none of which are true.

On September 16 we look forward to hosting Mr. Tyler Boyer, Chief Operating Officer for Turning Point Action, the 501(c)(4) organization that operates the nationwide youth effort “Students for Trump.” We are hopeful that Charlie Kirk,

After more than a decade of answering the Grand residents’ tech inquiries, Cappie is putting away his Apple Pen, IPad, Tablet, and PC, to concentrate on catnip and catnaps. Cappie and his writer (Rita Skarbek) and editor (CJ Rainaldi) thank all the residents who submitted questions and photos of their favorite pups, kittens, turtles, bunnies and birds throughout the years and also Jackie Couzens and Gail Roberts for ferreting out the timid puppies and kitties that appeared in the column.

Rita and Cappie moved to The Grand in 2005 after early retirement from the State of Illinois, where Rita monitored the Security Systems for the Department of Human Services Offices throughout the state and developed educational programs for employees on technology issues and employee security awareness.

About twelve years ago the “Dear Abby of Tech” concept evolved as a way to answer computerrelated questions often asked during Tech Help Tuesdays at the Grand Computers Club. Rita Skarbek dreamed up

the idea of showcasing the wonderful animals that reside in The Grand with answering common technical concerns at the time. Rita advanced her idea to the then Club President, Leon Chapman, who not only supported the idea but was instrumental in convincing the Grand Lifestyles staff to devote a monthly column to the newest technical advances.

The Cappie Column led to two Channel 22 Grand TV series that aired monthly from 2013 to 2016: “Rita Mary Commentary with co-host Gretel Coursol” and “The Three” with Jeff Taylor. With the help of

the-all volunteer Grand TV 22 members, she wrote, produced, and moderated two monthly series. Both shows were focused on introducing the community to the newest technological advances, computer safety and learning about community organizations and clubs. Special thanks to April Krammer, who edited the series, and to all the dedicated TV 22 cinematographers who made the shows possible.

Besides teaching Tech/ Social Media and Photo classes, Rita, along with Jane Connors, CJ Rainaldi, and JoeAnn Posey, started the Graphics Special

Interest Group, and, as part of the computer club’s Publicity Committee, they also designed ads and covers for the Grand Lifestyles Magazine.

Photography, Film, and Basketball (college and pro, both women’s and men’s), are Rita’s passions. She taught photography classes at the Jane Adams Center in Chicago, exhibited at various galleries and art shows in the Chicagoland area, and continues teaching digital photography, tech, and graphics programs in retirement. For over a decade she has and continues to volunteer for the Surprise Police Department's Citizen's Patrol in the Administration Section and employes her photography, writing, and editing skills there. Her mantra is to never stop learning or exploring the wonders of life, and always try to be kind to yourself and to every creature on this earth.

Finally, Cappie is especially grateful to CJ Rainaldi, whose skills in revising, reviewing, rewriting, correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence context, reformatting ideas in the rough, and fact checking made each monthly column fit for publication. CJ has been an “early adapter” of all things techie since her first Macintosh in 1984 and she actually enjoys troubleshooting tech challenges. She has been a

member of the Computer Club since 2005, serving as an assistant to the Education Director Ken Raske during the club’s transition to on-line registration for classes, teaching and assisting for ten years, again part of a group that taught Photoshop Elements via Zoom during COVID, and continuing to help friends with PCs, iPhones and now streaming. CJ also enjoys writing, taught advanced high school composition classes, and was a willing editor for Rita’s column since its inception.

Both Rita & CJ encourage Grand residents to stay informed not only about the latest software and gadgets but about the challenges and dangers of technology. Choose your sources wisely. And, finally, consider sharing YOUR talents with the Grand community.

News and Announcements

LIBRARY CARD DESIGN CONTEST WINNERS

Congratulations to our Library Card Design Contest winners! Certificates were awarded to the selected artists at the May 16 City Council Meeting. The winners in each category are:

n Jisella Longley (Mayor’s Choice)

n Jimmy Scott (City Librarian’s Choice)

n Dagny Tang (10 & Under)

n Afton Campbell (11-17)

n Amanda Mikesh (18+)

The winning artwork will be featured on the new Surprise Public Library System library cards, which will be needed to check out materials beginning July 1. At that time, patrons will be able to choose between seven card designs.

GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS

On Tuesday, May 16, City Council approved sending two General Obligation Bond questions to the November 7 Special Election ballot. Voters in Surprise are asked to consider:

n Transportation bond to fund road improvements that include segments of Waddell Road, Happy Valley Road, Cactus Road and 163rd Avenue ($66 million)

n Public safety bond that includes a fire station, police substation and land for additional public safety facilities ($34 million)

These projects would be funded by General Obligation Bonds, which are paid back from a secondary property tax. Surprise voters approved a secondary property tax in 2017 for the funding of 10 Capital Improvement Projects, which are now complete. Based on certain financing and property tax value assumptions, it is not expected that property owners will see a secondary property tax rate increase due to the passing of one or both 2023 bond questions. The City currently has a secondary property tax rate of $0.3880 per $100 of assessed limited property value. Due to significant residential and commercial growth across Surprise, the City expects it can issue additional bond debt without increasing the rate. The estimated average tax rate of the proposed authorization is $0.28 per $100 of assessed limited property value.

Go to surpriseaz.gov/bond to learn more.
