FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

JUST DO IT! Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager

Have you ever considered volunteering to serve on one of Sun City Grand’s Board Appointed committees? If so, you may want to delve deeper into the possibilities – after all, being part of a committee can be a valuable experience in many ways. You can share your expertise, learn about an issue affecting our community and gain governance experience – a boon if you’d like to become a community leader. In addition, you can work collaboratively with a team, conduct research, meet with subject matter experts, get to know your neighbors and make a difference for your fellow homeowners. So, first, a quick summary. Committees are designed to assist the Board members of our community association by addressing important issues, researching and compiling information, and providing recommendations that best serve Sun City Grand. Typical areas of focus may include repairs and maintenance, social programming, landscaping, buildings and grounds, violations, covenants

enforcement, communication and more. Committees deliver many rewards, both in creating stronger communities and providing shareholders with rewarding experiences. But if you’re concerned you may not have what it takes to add value to a committee, consider this: there are no specific requirements. The benefits an individual can bring to a committee are often as unique as the individuals and committees themselves – and for that matter, as unique as Sun City Grand itself. It’s true that there are noone-size-fits all requirements to become a committee member but even so, it’s not

for everyone. Serving on a committee is a group effort that demands time, dedication, and the ability to collaborate and reach consensus with others. Those are all qualities that may be a good fit for your lifestyle or temperament – or not. Homeowners with experience or skillsets in a particular area, like accounting or finance, insurance, or management, or an interest in a specific issue affecting their community, such as lifestyle, , amenities or recreation, can be very helpful and effective members of an association committee. A community spirit often drives owners who participate on a committee, and many owners take great pride and

ownership in helping to make a difference in their community, improving their home, and protecting the interests of their investment. In fact, serving on a committee is a terrific breeding ground for becoming a Board member; both are volunteer positions with a shared sense of responsibility and representation. Other good committee candidates are often those who recently moved into the community. New residents can bring an outsider’s perspective and fresh ideas, and at the same time, serving on a committee is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and make new friends. continuted on page 9

COFFEE CONVERSATION WITH KEN

The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Conversation with Ken is on March 20 at 8 a.m. in the Palm Center. 8

In addition, if you have leadership capabilities or experience, as well as the ability to nurture a collaborative and supportive team, you can leverage those skills to become a successful committee chair. But along with interest, passion and experience, it’s also important to consider whether you have enough bandwidth to devote to serving on a committee – after all, business or personal responsibilities often take up many people’s available free time. If your experience, interests, passion and time are in sync with a committee’s needs, consider this – can you be objective? Do you have the ability to separate your personal interests from those

of the association? In other words, can you put aside your own wishes and needs to make a decision that benefits the greater good of Sun City Grand? Serving on a committee can be a win-win for both you and Sun City Grand– a great way to enjoy a rewarding experience and at the same time, make a difference in our community. If you’re still unsure whether you have the right stuff – remember, some of the most productive committee members once wondered the same thing – consult with existing committee members or the Board of Directors for some sage advice. Maybe it’s time to test the committee experience or as the saying goes Just Do It!

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

Divot Etiquette Jeff Hochman

When you hit balls on a range, please be considerate to the turf as well as other golfers. Please keep your divots in patterns to maximize the use of the turf and to allow the damaged turf to heal quickly.

Director of Golf Operations

How many times have you gone to a driving range to practice and when you go to hit balls, it is hard to find “nice turf to hit off of? Often you will probably see divots scattered everywhere and not making it very easy to practice off of quality turf.

10

Below, is a picture of what 30 divots looks like when done differently.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO

The Grand Election Team (GET) is once again doing some team building. On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, we will host a meeting so you can see what we do and how we do it, and see if you would like to be a part of our team effort. You probably already know that one of our jobs is to run the Board Election each year as well as the Call for Candidates for the Board Appointed Committees. But that is just a part of what we do. We are looking for people who like to write, edit, speak publicly, host, and generally work in a team atmosphere to get the job done. There is no particular time commitment - when your job is done your commitment ends, if you want it to end. Only the Core Team is asked to give a two year commitment for continuity. If you think you would like to be on our Team then please join us to share your ideas and see if we are a fit!

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

YOUR CONSENT IS NEEDED NOW

TO UPDATE AND IMPROVE OUR GOVERNING DOCUMENTS Part Two of last month’s article of statements made to the Consent Committee and the responses provided.

FACT or FICTION 1) Annual homeowner assessment increases may be less if CARE funds can pay for capital projects. FACT: As capital projects are

undertaken to keep Sun City Grand the #1 retirement community in Arizona, and if the CARE (Community and Resident Enhancement) fees collected at the time of a home sale can be used for capital projects, the fees will provide additional financial resources which may reduce the pressure to increase assessments.

2) If these documents pass, the Board can change the CARE fee as necessary. FACT: The Sun City Grand Board

of Directors’ primary responsibility is the fiduciary health of our community. The Board will weigh the amount of the one-time, buy-in fee (CARE fee) against the need to keep the community beautiful and current. Discussions are held at Board and advisory committee meetings which are open to all residents.

3) The Board will now hear homeowner appeals if denied by the ARC. FICTION: As is the current practice,

individual homeowner requests will not be appealable to the Board. However, the Board will

be allowed to intervene, if in its judgment, actions taken or proposed by the ARC (Architectural Review Committee) could be detrimental to the Association. 4) The new documents increase the power of the Board. FACT & FICTION: At eight Town Hall

Meetings, homeowners challenged the Board to provide oversight of the ARC.

There are provisions which take power away from the Board. Examples include: n Board liaisons may no longer vote on the committees on which they serve, thereby limiting them to only vote on motions before the Board of Directors. n The Board must have a minimum of five members, not three, which reduces the concentration of power. n Extends the receipt of gift rules to apply explicitly to Board members. 5) Sun City Grand will no longer be a Del Webb community if these documents pass. FICTION: While the documents

remove most references to Del Webb’s involvement in the governance of SCG, we will still proudly fly the Del Webb flag, maintain the Del Webb name in our cornerstone, on our softball diamond,

and on various markers throughout the community. 6) There is no cap on future CARE fee increases. FACT: The current documents set the

CARE fee to be equal to the annual base assessment (dues). As the cost of keeping SCG’s value strong and competitive with neighboring agerestrictive communities, the CARE fee will be based on the needs of the community. Any CARE fee decisions will be discussed through the annual budget process, advisory committee meetings, and Board meetings which are open to all residents.

7) An increase in CARE fees will make homes harder to sell. FICTION: Improvements to current

amenities and creation of additional amenities will increase home values and demand.

The next Consent Conversations will be held on March 7 at 1:00pm and on March 19 at 9:00am in the Sonoran Plaza. Bring your questions.

BRYCE CANYON & ZION NATIONAL PARKS

BRYCE CANYON

(Based upon Double Occ.)

See page 66 for details

Bryce Canyon & Zion National Parks Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee & goodies on our way to Cameron Trading Post for lunch on self. Nestled along the Colorado River, and just 30 minutes south of the Grand Canyon, this trading post has been catering to Arizona tourists since the early 1900’s, serving great food at moderate prices. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’ll hit it for Kanab, Utah—an incredibly scenic drive that takes us through Navajo land with views of Marble Canyon, Lake Powell, Glen Canyon Dam and more. After checking into our hotel, we’ll take a little time for a refresh, gather for our own Happy Hour and then head out for dinner on self. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Two: A hot buffet breakfast is included at the hotel, and then it’s back on the bus and we’re headed for Zion National Park. Zion is a spectacular cliff and canyon landscape, a wondrous wilderness—including Kolob Arch—the world’s largest natural arch, with a span that measures 310 feet. Zion is rich with beautiful colors, breathtaking scenery and wildlife such as mule deer, golden eagles and mountain lions. We’ll spend a little time familiarizing ourselves with the area at the visitor’s center and then we’ll tour Zion from the comfort of a tram. Hop on and off as you wish, and later we’ll enjoy a nice lunch on self, at one of the two restaurants at Zion. Late in the

afternoon we’ll return to our hotel and after a refresh, we’ll gather for our own Happy Hour, included, before heading out for dinner on self. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Three: Once again, we’ll enjoy a hot breakfast buffet, included at the hotel, and then it’s back on the bus and we’re headed for Bryce Canyon National Park. The beauty of Bryce Canyon is beyond description. It has been called “a cave without a ceiling, a forest of stone.” We’ll tour Bryce from the comfort of our own bus, and we’ll all enjoy a delicious lunch on self, at Ruby’s Inn—where we’ll have two restaurants to choose from and their menus offer something for everyone. Bryce Canyon is a series of natural amphitheaters, with thousands of multicolored rock pinnacles called “hoodoos.” We’ll travel the 20-mile paved highway along the rim, overlooking magnificent views of the natural structures that were carved by erosion into graceful forms that glow with various colors. Late in the afternoon we’ll return to our hotel and after a refresh, we’ll gather for our own Happy Hour, before setting out for dinner on self. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Four: Breakfast is included at the hotel, and then it’s bags out and we're back on the bus headed for home. We’ll enjoy lots of great sightseeing and stops along the way. This is a remarkable tour, and we hope you’ll join us!

Grand Lifestyles | March 2019 | suncitygrand.com

Here, amidst the dazzling, multicolored limestone, you will find the largest concentration of hoodoos in the entire world. Hoodoos are vertically-shaped spires of rock that acquire their shape through a particular form of erosion involving rainwater’s ability to dissolve combined with something called frost wedging. This natural phenomenon has also created fins, windows, and slot canyons all across the area. Bryce is truthfully not a canyon, at least not in the traditional sense. It’s actually a collection of amphitheaters (as they’ve been named) that have been carved naturally into the limestone over countless years. These amphitheaters, along with the thousands upon thousands of hoodoos and other unique formations, create a maze-like landscape that really must be seen to be believed.

ZION NATIONAL PARK It is believed the first people to explore what is now Zion National Park entered the canyon looking for food. Thousands of years later more than 4 million people come from around the world to feed more than their bodies. Most visitors today come to nourish their souls with the sight of the verdant valleys and vermillion cliffs of Zion, one of the most visited national parks in the United States. Zion National Park is always ready to quench your appetite for outdoor wonder.

SCG RESIDENT OF THE MONTH

SUN CITY GRAND'S OWN MUSIC MAN! Sun City Grand’s own Music Man! That is how many people living in Grand might describe David Durham. David’s joy in life is singing to and along with people who enjoy doing the same. Nominated and Submitted by Jake Gibbs SCG Resident

David and Soni, his wife of 37 years, moved here 4 years ago from Colorado. It didn’t take him long to find the SCG Music Club and become actively involved. Not long after moving to SCG, David performed in the Variety Show and several Celebration of Music events. He and Soni also produced a Music Club Showcase featuring undiscovered SCG talent. Early on he put together the popular bi-monthly Acoustic Music Group at the Cimarron Club. Group members play a variety of instruments, including guitars, banjos, ukuleles, mandolins, harmonicas, and even an upright bass. Members choose songs and

share them via email prior to meeting so everyone has a chance to learn new songs. Anyone can join, even if you don’t play an instrument. There are no tryouts or restrictions involved; it’s all just for fun. David has recently added to his local musical contributions by teaching guitar classes at the Grand Learning Center. In partnership with CAM and the music club, David has put together several shows featuring different types of musical talent from the SCG Music Club in an al fresco atmosphere at the outdoor amphitheater. All SCG residents are welcome to enjoy these free shows. David isn’t new to the music scene. While living in Colorado, he started a group called the King‘N Trio YOU’LL ALWAYS BE TREATED LIKE FAMILY... AND WE LIKE OUR FAMILY!

with some fellow Rotarians who wanted to get together and share some music. They became so popular that they raised over $400,000 for various local charities all over the state. Also, during college he spent summers working at the Many Glacier Hotel, where he wore many hats, but his favorite was overseeing the Monday Night Hootenanny. That experience came in handy when he, along with several members of the Acoustic Music Group, decided to put on a Hootenanny at SCG. David wondered if people would pay to come to a singalong but soon learned that they certainly would. In fact, the Hootenanny has been an event to look forward to twice a year. Keep a lookout in the Grand Lifestyles Magazine to make sure that you don’t miss out on these fun events. About a year ago, David and several other SCG musicians (Don Ballard, Jan Huber, Patrick Watts, and Mike Bastien) formed a group called The Salty Dawgs. Performing a repertoire of folk, Irish, and some original tunes, the Dawgs play at

several venues in the area and do some benefits and Veterans Day programs. Writing songs and poetry has always been David’s love. So, since retiring and moving to SCG, David has been working on writing a musical play. The story is loosely based on a real couple, Larry Wild and Arllys Indergard, friends of Soni and David’s, who are both widowed and connected with each other in 2013. Larry and Arllys followed David and Soni to SCG and have been Snow Birds living at La Solana for the past 3 years. The play, called The Cruise, has comedy, drama, and dancing, and includes 10 original songs, with three production numbers. This heartwarming story is tailormade for SCG audiences and David looks forward to sharing it with everyone.

NOTE

Anyone is eligible to nominate someone who they feel has accomplished a lot in Sun City Grand. It can be a hobby, a craft, or making an impact in the community. Nomination forms are available at the Activites office, and completed nominations need to be submitted to the Activites office by the 10th of the month.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

EVERYTHING’S COMING UP ROSES

The waning days of 2018 are a distant memory for most of us, but Jan and Ray Landskroner still remember them as if they happened yesterday. The couple, who live at The Colonnade, spent Dec. 28-31, cutting, gluing, and performing other tasks involved in decorating floats for the world-famous Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, the largest all-floral parade in the United States, coming up on its 131st anniversary. They learned about the volunteer opportunity through their church, Crown of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West. The Lutheran Hour, a syndicated radio program, has entered a float in the Rose Parade every year since 1951. A volunteer group called the Petal Pushers, recruit volunteers annually to decorate the Lutheran Hour float and other floats that need volunteers. “It’s one of the most rewarding volunteer jobs I’ve ever done,” Jan says. Ray agrees. “We had no idea how much is involved. It’s really something to see the floats from start to finish,” Ray says. The parade could not happen without thousands of volunteers committing thousands of hours to help decorate the floats. For four days, eight hours each day with a half hour break for lunch, Jan and Ray carried out a variety of tasks but mostly they were tasked with applying seeds, other organic materials and of course, flowers to the floats. Most of the decorations are glued on so by the end of the day, volunteers look like poorly decorated floats themselves, covered with glue, paint, or leftover seeds and crushed flowers. “We were tired by the end of each day,” Jan says. But any tiredness was outweighed by the positives. “Everyone we met was so nice and it was exciting being there as everyone rushed to get the floats done and ready for the judging,” she says. In addition to The Lutheran Hour float, Jan and Ray also helped with Honda (the tournament sponsor), The City of

Ray and Jan Landskroner helped decorate the Lutheran Hour float entry for the 2018 Tournament of Roses Parade.

Alhambra and Mrs. Meyer’s, an organic cleaning company. These floats along with 16 others were built and decorated in a massive warehouse called the Phoenix Float Barn. The Lutheran Hour float, called “Joy to the World” was decorated with 13,000 flowers, including 9,200 roses and countless bits of organic material such as beans, seeds and grass. It featured a choir and a Nativity scene with actors playing Mary and Joseph and Jesus, represented by a baby doll. When the supervisor learned that Jan was an interior designer and Ray, an industrial engineer, she recruited the couple to secure baby Jesus so he would be visible to parade goers and the television audience. “We actually used wire to secure baby Jesus arms and legs,” Jan says.

In addition to the 40 floral-decorated floats, the parade includes equestrian units and marching bands. Each year the Tournament of Roses selects judges to review the floats and award trophies to the “best.” Officials announced the award-winning floats on New Year’s Day prior to the parade. Two of the floats that Jan and Ray worked on received awards. After all the hard work, the Landskroners enjoyed watching the parade on New Year’s Day. “You take a lot of pride in being able to see the floats you had a hand in decorating,” Ray says. They are already thinking about volunteering for next year’s parade.

IT'S TIME TO SUBMIT YOUR C.H.A.P.S. VACATION REQUEST FORM

Many Sun City Grand home owners will soon be leaving their homes for several weeks, or travel even several months during the late spring or summer time. If you are among them and would like C.H.A.P.S. volunteers to check the outside area of your home while you are away, you will want to complete and submit a C.H.A.P.S. Vacation Request form. This form can be picked up at the Membership Desk in the Palm Center, or found on-line at suncitygrand.com. If you are away from Sun City Grand for two weeks or more, if you are not using a paid house sitting service, if your house is not listed for sale . . . you qualify for this service. to the Membership Desk at least two weeks before you leave. Be sure to include a current telephone number for your key holder in case that person needs to be contacted for any reason. Vacation Watch house inspectors will check your house for locked windows and doors, look for irrigation leaks, remove business cards and advertisements from your front door, call your key holder regarding packages delivered to your home or any security issues, inspect for storm damage or vandalism, check water features for mosquito breeding still water, etc. All of this is a volunteer service by Sun City Grand home owners for Sun City Grand home owners. This

service is free, but donations are welcome. If you are going to have an extended stay beyond your original return date, please call the C.H.A.P.S. office at 623-546-7553 to give us your new return date. Just leave a message with your name, address, lot number, and neighborhood name. If you are coming back on your planned return date no phone call is necessary. PLEASE JOIN US FOR AN AFTERNOON OR EVENING OF MAH JONGG The Mah Jongg Club plays according to National Mah Jongg League Rules. We generally play in the Hopi Room at the Chaparral Center. Bring with you your current NMJL card, five dollars in change, and your CAM card. We play a five dollar “pie.” If you lose your five dollars, you may continue to play. Who knows – you may win some or all of your money back! In order to join us, you must already know how to play. However, we generally give lessons in April and November. You may play up to two times as a guest before becoming a member. You may arrive or leave at any time during play. After you are East, you move to the next available table. This way, you will meet many of the other members and make new mah jongg friends. We play on Tuesdays from 12:30 P.M. to 4 P.M., and on Wednesdays from 5:45 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. You do not have to bring your own mah jongg set. We run tournaments for members several times a year and we have three social events. On January 1st, we have a “pot–luck” lunch. In April, when the new NMJL card comes out, we run a “New Card” luncheon, and in December, we combine a “Holiday Luncheon” with a semi– annual meeting, at which time we elect the officers for the following year. All three events are followed by mah jongg play. If you would like additional information you may contact any of the officers listed below or send an email to scgmahjonggclub@gmail.com. THE 37TH ANNUAL WA:K POW WOW AT SAN XAVIER MISSION Early Spanish missionaries built adobe chapels and missions throughout Mexico, which at the time included Southern Arizona. We’re on our way to Mission San Xavier del Bac, an amazing example of this architecture. Once part of the chain of churches that stretched from northern Mexico to the western United States, this amazing structure is considered the “Sistine Chapel of North America” for the intricate paintings on the walls and ceiling. It is still a Catholic parish serving the Tohono O’odham community for whom it was established in the late 1600’s. We’re heading south past Tucson to San Xavier Mission to celebrate the 36th annual Wa:k Pow Wow, an exciting display of inter-tribal dancing, along with a wide selection of traditional Native American food, arts & crafts! This colorful festival features Gourd Dancing, a Drum Contest, Team Dancing, Hoop Dance Contest and Two Step Contest. The artwork is just spectacular, and we’ll see beautiful silver and beaded jewelry, and enjoy a delicious lunch on self, of traditional foods, such as fry bread, Indian tacos and red and green chili burros. This annual Pow Wow is a total blast! *This trip is offered in conjunction with Kindred Tours. This outside contractor Grand Lifestyles | March 2019 | suncitygrand.com

AN AFTERNOON IN JEROME & LUNCH AT THE ASYLUM We’re on our way to Jerome, Arizona and the haunted and historic Grand Hotel, where we’ll enjoy lunch included, at the award-winning Asylum Restaurant. Famously spooky—the Grand Hotel was originally constructed in 1926 and started out as the United Verde Hospital, the most modern and well-equipped hospital in all the western states. The hospital closed in 1950 as mining petered out, and then stood vacant for 44 years until the building was purchased, then renovated and reopened as the Grand Hotel. The Asylum restaurant offers a fabulous fine dining experience and a chef-inspired menu that is sure to please— gourmet salads, big delicious sandwiches and burgers, homemade soup and so much more. After lunch we’ll explore the mile-high town of Jerome, perched atop Cleopatra Hill, once a huge deposit of copper, gold and silver. We’ll stroll the streets of downtown Jerome, home to many charming shops and galleries, along with three very interesting wine tasting rooms—including rockstar owned Caduceus Cellars. The 62

OLD RIM ROAD SCENIC DRIVE We’re off to travel Arizona’s Forest Road 300—The Old Rim Road. Although there are many ways to approach this journey, we’ll begin in Payson, where we’ll enjoy some scrumptious Mexican food on self, at El Rancho Mexican Restaurant, a great favorite with not only the locals, but also Arizona Highways—who named El Rancho one of the top 25 restaurants in Arizona. The food’s delicious, the price is right and the menu offers something for everyone. After lunch our journey really begins. We’ll make our way along the Mogollan Rim, a massive wall of rock that is thousands of feet tall and hundreds of miles long, beginning at the Arizona/ New Mexico border and stretching across most of the state. Pronounced “muggy-on” by locals, the Rim offers some of the most breathtaking, jaw dropping scenery that the state of Arizona has to offer. The scenery is always changing as we travel through the world’s largest stand of Ponderosa pines, and intersect what was once the General Crook Trail—a historic wagon route that was used in the 1880’s to provide support for General Crook in the U.S. Army’s war against the Apaches. We’ll travel through the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest into the Coconino National forest—with an eye out for elk and mule deer, as we make our way into the Pine/

Zion is a spectacular cliff and canyon landscape, a wondrous wilderness— including Kolob Arch—the world’s largest natural arch, with a span that measures 310 feet. Late in the afternoon we’ll return to our hotel and after a refresh, we’ll gather for our own Happy Hour, included, before heading out for dinner on self. Bryce Canyon is a series of natural amphitheaters, with thousands of multi-colored rock pinnacles called “hoodoos.” We’ll travel the 20-mile paved highway along the rim, overlooking magnificent views of the natural structures that were carved by erosion into graceful forms that glow with various colors. *This trip is offered in conjunction with Kindred Tours. RENT AT THE GAMMAGE In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson's RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters-love. $103/pp | 6 p.m. Bus Departs Sonoran Plaza Lot

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

AVOID CYBER CRIME Dear Cappie, What are the warning signs that might prevent my being duped by internet criminals? Does a victim of an online scam have any recourse? Sincerely, Alice, Sun City Grand

Dear Alice, To protect yourself from online internet scams, learn how scammers work and never engage: hang up, do not reply, do not call back, or do not respond in any way. Legitimate security or tech support companies will not initiate unsolicited contact. Scammers, on the other hand, will use an unsolicited phone call, e-mail or text message informing you of a virus, computer malfunction, bank account problem or other issue. These con artists identify themselves as a technical support employee, security expert employed by a software, cable, computer company; or even a government, law enforcement, credit card or bank employee. They offer to help you fix a virus, a compromised bank account or e-mail, renew a software license; assist you with your tax audit or even ask your help in apprehending internet criminals. Another scam tactic deals with weblinks: if you click on a fraudulent link or accidentally type a popular web address incorrectly, you can end up on the scammer’s website where a pop-up can appear on your PC screen (informing you of a virus) or your screen can be locked or frozen. A phone number or recording pops up with instructions to contact a fraudulent tech support company. If contact is made, the scammer will try to convince you to allow him or her remote access to your device. Once remotely connected, the criminal claims to find expired licenses, viruses, malware, or worse: they steal your passwords and identity and/or encrypt all your files— and then inform you the virus/malware, etc. can be removed, files un-encrypted or fixed for a fee. Payment is generally requested through bank/wire transfer, 72

personal/electronic check, debit/credit card, prepaid card, or virtual currency. If you receive a pop-u or locked screen, shut down the device immediately. If, after a short time, you restart and the pop-up or screen lock has not disappeared, contact a reputable tech establishment. Never give unknown, unverified persons remote access to devices or accounts. Another scam involves Search Engine Advertising: Criminals pay to have their fraudulent tech support company’s link show higher in search results. If you have a real issue with your computer and search online for someone to fix the problem, they hope you will choose one of those top links on online search engines to find technical support companies to help you. Choose only known reputable sources. Ensure all your ad-blocking, anti-virus, security, and malware protection is upto-date. If a criminal does gain access to a device or an account, take precautions to protect your assets and identity. Immediately contact financial institutions to place protection on accounts as well as change passwords. Actively monitor accounts and personal information for suspicious activity. If you feel you have been victimized by a fraudulent online website or telephone scam, you do have recourse to notify the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) of the FBI (https://www.ic3.gov ) and file a complaint online. When filling out the report it is important to be as detailed as possible as to what happened, how it occurred, and keep all the original documentation and exchanges like e-mails, faxes, logs of times and methods of communications. Be sure to list the name of the company or person(s) you had communicated or interacted with as

Special thanks to Yvonne and Marilyn for submitting a photo of their Cocker Spaniel, Sophie, age 13, which they obtained from Geriatric Rescue. well as the Web sites, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses used in your communication. If funds were exchanged, list the account names, numbers, and financial institutions receiving any type of funds (prepaid card payments, bank accounts, wire transfers, virtual currency wallets, etc. regardless if the funds were not actually lost). Provide screen shots if available. In a ransomware attempt, for example, include the e-mail, Web site, or link that caused a pop-up or locked screen.
