This recipe uses the reverse creaming method. Preheat oven to 350. Grease & flour three 8 inch pans. I also like to use parchment paper in the bottom of the pans to help with the cake release. In your mixing bowl, add the dry ingredients (flour and the next seven ingredients.) With the mixer on low speed, mix the dry ingredients for 30 seconds so all will be well blended. Add the pieces of butter a few slices at a time. Mix until the dry ingredients are moistened by the butter and look like coarse sand. If you pinch some of the mixture between your fingers, it will stick together. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl.
In another bowl combine eggs, oil, pumpkin, milk and vanilla. Whisk until well blended, set aside. Method is important in this recipe so with the mixer on low speed, slowly add approximately ½ of the egg mixture. Increase to medium speed for 1 ½ minutes. Scrape bottom and sides of the bowl. Add the remaining egg mixture in 2 pourings, beating 20 seconds after each addition. Bake at 350 degrees 30–35 minutes, let cool in pans 10 minutes then turn onto cooling racks.
Spiced butter cream cheeese frosting 1½ Cups (3 sticks) of softened unsalted butter 1½ Packages of cream cheese n 1½ Teaspoon of cinnamon n 1/2 Teaspoon of nutmeg n 5 – 5 ½ Cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted (or more to reach desired spreading consistency) n 2 Teaspoons vanilla extract n n
To prepare the frosting Using your mixer, beat the butter and cream cheese until well blended. Add the vanilla and spices. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the confectioners’ sugar and mix until it is a good consistency for spreading Frost each layer and sides of cake. Decorate as you desire. I chose a fall theme with edible leaves and candy pumpkins. Enjoy with a hot cup of coffee!

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
How NOT to Fall First, a little doom and gloom… (but it gets better) …
25,000 older Americans died last year from falling n 1 in 3 adults over 65 fall every year n Every year 2.5 MILLION people are treated for fallrelated injuries n Falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injuries requiring medical attention n
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Everyone in this community has a similar fear – “What if I fall? Will I break something? Will that mean the end of my independence.?” Let’s discuss why we fall and then give you some preventative methods to help allay that fear…
14
What/Where are the risks of falling? In your home: throw rugs, pets, hardwood floors, bathroom, getting into or out of a chair, uneven walking surfaces. n Your body and lifestyle: dressing without care (sit down!), medications, diabetic – neuropathy, changing medical n
conditions, depression, lack of exercise, failing vision, staying in a toofamiliar environment (get out of the house!), turning/ changing positions too quickly, decreased response time, inability to quickly regain balance, inability to negotiate obstacles, decreased flexibility, and finally “fear of falling.” Yes, you read that correctly. The “fear of falling” actually puts you at a greater risk for….falling.
You do not have to be a “fall statistic”. In general, here are some tips to prevent a fall… Get out of the house ✦ Try new things, get yourself into new environments n Be physically active ✦ Take fitness classes, work out in the fitness room, go for a walk, bike ride, small weights at home, get a “big ball”, dance! ✦ Build upper and lower body strength; spend an hour with a personal trainer ✦ Watch your posture – stand and walk upright – Especially if you use a walker or cane n
n
Watch your “gait”
✦ No shuffling, no “half
steps”, swing your arms when you walk! ✦ No inappropriate footwear – no flip flops ✦ Increase deep breathing
Here’s some easy exercises to keep you strong and on balance.
1
Get out of your chair – no arms….several times per day.
2
Stand on one leg…hold hold hold….. other leg…(hold onto a chair or counter if you need to.)
3
Heel raises so you are standing on your toes…then stand on your heels!
4 5
Leg lifts… one at a time Knee raises…. same thing only lead with your knee……other leg
6 7
“Marching” in a chair…..use your arms! Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth (hold onto the bathroom counter).

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
Gratitude Flows at The Colonnade
RESIDENTS SPEAK OUT ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE GRATEFUL FOR IN 2020 The year 2020 has been unlike anything that most of us have lived through. With the pandemic and the many issues that have dominated the news and our social media newsfeeds, it might be easy to be focus on the negative. Yet, there are also many things to be grateful for. We’ve asked some residents what they are grateful for.
JIM GREENWALD, RESIDENT SINCE JANUARY 2017, FROM SUN CITY GRAND
BOB AND CHERI NELSON, RESIDENTS SINCE MARCH 2016, FROM SUN CITY GRAND
2020 has been a very difficult year. From January through August, my wife and I were sequestered while she was on hospice care. She passed away in August. The thing I am most grateful for is that we were living at The Colonnade. The support we received, not just from friends and neighbors, but from the employees, was amazing. I had 125 cards from across the campus. Every time I walked down one of the beautiful paths here someone would ask how I was doing and if there was something they could do. It was just a tremendous feeling. The Colonnade is not a community of seniors, it’s a family of seniors. We look after each other. And, that doesn’t just mean the residents. It’s the same with the employees. We have programs to support them, including the employee appreciation fund, that raises a tremendous amount of money every year from the residents.
According to Cheri, we feel totally protected thanks to the staff. Bob and I have not been out other than to buy groceries, not even to church other than watching their weekly virtual services. We are being very careful and don’t want that virus. There are so many things to do here. I’m safely exercising every day thanks to the staff and how they have everything set up. Thank goodness for Jeanice Hamilton, director of Resident Services. She makes sure we are safe distancing and we have our masks on. Bob said, I feel grateful that we live here. There is nothing that we want for. One thing that is really important is the security of knowing that whatever needs we have, are taking care of. Cheri added, you know, we did this as a gift to our children. They do not have to worry about us. And, that is a blessing.

GRACIE CARTER, RESIDENT AUGUST 2017, FROM SUN CITY GRAND
I am grateful being here and making the decision to come in when I did and being accepted as a resident. I am truly grateful for the security here. The staff protect us and keep us safe. I lost my spouse this year and we didn’t know this area very well. They were here – literally to walk by our sides throughout a whole year of Paul being sick, going to rehab, then the hospital and dying. Without the staff, I don’t know how I would have managed. Jeanice was literally by our side the entire time. When Paul died in March, shortly thereafter the pandemic started closing everything down. And, even though I was in isolation I was never alone because I was surrounded by my “forever home” friends and neighbors. The Colonnade is a nonprofit Sun Health Life Plan community. It’s part of Sun City Grand, and has more than 320 residents in Independent Living. The campus also offers Assisted Living and Memory Support services open to the public. While life has changed considerably in recent months, our commitment to health and safety hasn’t wavered. We’ve successfully implemented stringent protocols in response to COVID-19 and continue to work with residents and staff to ensure a thriving, healthy lifestyle for all. With your safety in mind, our communities are open and ready to help you start planning for the future. For up-to-date information about the campus, visit SunHealthCommunities.org or call (623) 236-3700. 23

Clay Arts Club Gives “Grateful Hearts” Sun City Grand Clay Arts Club presented local first responders at Banner Del Webb Hospital and Surprise Fire Stations 302 and 306 with their “Grateful Hearts” and
“Thirsty Hearts” Recognition Awards. The studio shut down at the onset of this pandemic did not deter Clay Arts members from using their creativity, and getting their hands in mud, to acknowledge others during this time. Working from home, members created more than 440 hearts during months of quarantine. Each of the hand-crafted hearts is an original, unique, one of a kind design. Club member Jan Nolan conceived the idea of making hearts to show appreciation to those working in the hospitals
and on the front lines. Jan and her husband were formerly first responders when they lived in Washington. With the support of fellow club members, and the generous donation of more than 225 pounds of clay, the beat of the hearts was created. During this most challenging time, Grand Clay Arts Club gives heartfelt thanks for the compassion, dedication and well-being of our community.

LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT By Martin Cohen
Several years ago, in the Adobe Workout Room, I saw the hardest working guy on an elliptical bike. His facial expressions displayed his determination. I noticed he was challenged by some muscle disorder which was confirmed when he got off the equipment onto his scooter. Several weeks ago, I ran into John Koslovski at the Adobe Indoor Pool doing water exercises with his Trainer Jan Bailey. I asked Jan why she smiled so much, and she told me she enjoyed helping others like John. John and Jan have infectious smiles. I felt compelled to share their story with you. John was born with Cerebral Palsy in Southwest Chicago near Midway Airport. He was educated at wonderful Chicago schools that concentrated on children with challenges. John was raised to believe he was not handicapped and could live a fulfilling and happy life. He not only graduated Spaulding High School but went on the University of Illinois at Champaign. He wound up
30
working for International Harvester and took courses in computer programming and worked in computer science. And of course John is a Cubs’ fan with home decorations honoring the 2016 world series win. John and his wife moved to Sun City Grand 10 years ago after his sister came here. His wife died 5 years ago and he is very independent. He works out 3 days in the Adobe Gym and 2 at the indoor pool. As I see him complete an exercise in the pool, both Jan and he smile and then I smile feeling their accomplishment. But John never asks for a “that-a-boy”. For him, “life is what you make of it” and he has a happy and peaceful life here at the Grand. He feels peace comes from being kind to people so how you relate to others in life is critical to your happiness. Finally, John reminds all of us that those with physical and mental challenges are people first and should be treated and supported like those without handicaps.
Smile and you’ll see the sun shining through and that’s what John Koslovski and Jan Bailey do.

THE GR AND L ADIES GOLF AS SOCIATION
Golf Employee Appreciation Lunch!
The Grand Ladies Golf Association is once again organizing an appreciation lunch for all golf employees, thanking them for maintaining our four beautiful golf courses which keep our community thriving. During these trying times, we are giving everyone an opportunity to help continue this tradition. Taking care of the golf courses requires irrigators, spray technicians, mechanics and many more who do everything from rake bunkers and mow to repair greens and move cups. Not to mention the starters, rangers and pro shop staff. The elves are gathering monetary contributions to provide over 140 lunches to these wonderful dedicated group of individuals. As Jeff Hochman says “It’s an awesome way to show gratitude each December. It sends a positive message beyond a paycheck”. The residents of Sun City Grand and its clubs have all been very generous in the past and we are asking for your generosity once again.
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE: 1. Drop a check in the GLGA box at Granite Falls Pro Shop, note Golf Employee Lunch.
2. Send your contribution via Zelle to GLGAtreasurer@gmail.com, reference Golf Employee Lunch in the memo section.
3. Elves will also be collecting cash or checks at various golf courses during November. Thank you in advance for your generosity. GLGA Event Coordinators, Molly Baker and Liz Dowd

It is a country of immense scenic beauty and a thriving European culture. Today it seems to be on everyone's "must visit" list. Greenland, its neighbor to the west, is a very different place - larger, colder and populated primarily by Inuit people. While it is currently a “backwater”, Greenland is poised

A common misconception is that you are genetically prewired to have these medical conditions sometime in your life. Chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease (to name a few) are lifestyle-related. The goal of this presentation is to show you that freedom from chronic disease is possible and doable. Get to know the people who reclaimed their health back with little to no help from medications through Lifestyle Medicine. MARY SHELLEY AND FRANKENSTEIN KEN SORENSEN
Meets 1 time on Wednesday, 11/4 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM FEE: $ 10 She was born to literary royalty. Her mother died shortly after her birth. Her father traveled in upper circles and inspired a variety of people. She participated in a bohemian lifestyle that upset her father, and yet he had advocated such a lifestyle. She married Percy Shelley, the Romantic era poet and rebel. In response to a dare, she wrote Frankenstein, thus creating the genre of science fiction and horror. After the unexpected early death of her husband, she spent much of her lifetime in honoring him, including the unusual statue. Come and hear her story and find out about her inspiration and the impact of that Modern Prometheus. MEMORY TRAINING CLASS LAURIE FOX
Meets 1 time on Tuesday, 12/8 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM FEE: $ 5 The Memory Training Class is a fun, interactive class for people who want to enhance and keep their memory strong. It’s that time of year again when we see more cars on the streets here in Grand. The posted speeds are 35 mph on Sunrise, Goldwater, Mountain View, Clearview, and Palm View, 25 mph on all other streets. The 4-way stop signs mean just that…come to a complete S-T-O-P. One homeowner shared with me they were cited by the Surprise police for failing to come to a complete S-T-O-P so beware. The Surprise police do patrol in Grand. With the added pedestrian traffic crossing between the Palm Center and the Sonoran Plaza on Remington please hold down your speed. It is not uncommon to witness cars traveling between 30 and 40 mph in that area. Sun City Grand offers great walking/bike riding trails. Suggestion from this regular bike rider: riders call out “bike passing” when approaching walkers. Walkers: please raise an arm when a rider calls out “bike passing” to acknowledge the passing riders. Courtesy to each other goes a long way when sharing these great trails. I didn’t mean to get sidetracked, but cars, bikes and walkers cannot be overemphasized.
VOLUNTEER
And now a word or two about out C.H.A.P.S.* volunteer group. We serve two main functions. We patrol in the evening checking for open garage doors, malfunctioning street lights, and any suspicious activity. This is known as Evening Patrol. In the early morning hours we provide a service known as Vacation Watch. Through Vacation Watch we check on homes that have been vacated in the summer or any other vacation period lasting at least two weeks. Forms to have your home “watched” can be picked up at the Palm Center or online. We perform a visual check for unlocked windows, and doors. This service is provided free of charge, but we do welcome donations.

DANCE CLUB
The SCG Dance Club is eager to get back to hosting our dances and dance lessons. To that end, we are closely monitoring data from the SCG Board of Directors, the pertinent advisory committees, and the CDC. At the moment, we do not see a path forward for the next several months. So, we have cancelled the August ballroom dance and all line dance lessons for the summer. We have learned that it is not safe for our dancers to dance indoors, without masks and to maintain physical distancing. We will post the latest information we have on the dance club website: scgdanceclub.org.

The Club has been reviewing options and planning virtual productions for the new season. Many plays are being written, or re=written for online delivery, in a Zoom like environment. We’ve identified our first virtual production and are in the process of casting and working out technical details. So, stay tuned. When we come back, and we will be back, we’ll see you both live and virtually.

Nancy Hayden Council Member, District 2
November starts the season of thankfulness and gratefulness, from honoring our Veterans, to gathering as families and friends to count our blessings, this truly is a special season. I know that I am thankful for having the opportunity to serve all of you as your District 2 Councilwoman, and I am grateful that I continue to hear from residents that have persevered and overcome unique challenges during these difficult times. Regrettably, we have not been able to gather as we normally would, due to the ongoing pandemic; however, I am always available to speak with you about any questions or concerns you may have. Please email me at Nancy.Hayden@ Surpriseaz.gov, or call me at 623-222-1322.
VETERANS DAY
Veterans Day is a time to honor all those who have served. Ronald Reagan said it well when he said, “We remember those who were called upon to give all a person can give, and we remember those who were prepared to make that sacrifice if it were demanded of them in the line of duty, though it never was. Most of all, we remember the devotion and gallantry with which all of them ennobled their nation as they became champions of a noble cause.” The City of Surprise honors our Veterans this month with video tributes provided by our residents. This compilation of community messages will be featured on Veterans Day on the Surprise TV cable channel, our Parks & Recreation social media pages (Facebook and Instagram), and the City of Surprise website at surpriseaz.gov. Decorated signs, created by residents celebrating and honoring Veterans, will also be on display on Bullard Ave. near Surprise Stadium on November 10-12. Please take the time to drive by and enjoy these heartfelt tributes. Thank you to everyone that submitted videos and created signs!
VIRTUAL EVENTS
As we continue to find new ways to adjust to the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our Surprise events have switched to a virtual platform. The 7th Annual Fiesta Grande Celebration was hosted virtually in October and included cooking and dance classes, crafts, games, and more! If you didn’t have a chance to participate, the virtual events were recorded and can be accessed on surpriseaz.gov/fiestagrande. This month, you can participate in virtual landscape workshops that will focus on water conservation best practices. n

PROPERTY TAX RATE
I have heard from some of my constituents regarding the City of Surprise property tax rate. I wanted
1.1471(0.7591 + 0.3880) = $143.39 The rate stayed the same, but a tax increase was due to the valuation of your home.
to take a brief moment to clarify that the City of Surprise tax rate has not increased. The primary property tax rate in the City of Surprise is $0.7591 per $100 of assessed property value, plus the secondary property tax rate (from the voter-approved 2017 GO Bond) of $0.3880 per $100 of assessed property value. These rates multiplied by the assessed value of your home determine what you pay in property taxes. If the value of your home increases, you will see an increased tax bill; however, that is not due to an increase in the property tax rate, but rather an increase in the assessed value of your home. For example: $100,000 (assessed value of your home) 1.1471(0.7591 + 0.3880) = $114.71 Next year, your home is assessed at $125,000 $125,000 (assessed value of your home)
Grand Lifestyles | November 2020 | suncitygrand.com
If you would like more information, please visit the City of Surprise website at www.surpriseaz.gov/3639/PropertyTax-Costs. For more information on the GO Bond, please visit surpriseaz.gov/ DecideSurprise. The next City Council meeting will be November 17th at 6 p.m. The Council chambers have been opened for limited in-person public participation. In keeping with CDC guidelines, capacity will be limited to 50 people, face coverings will be required when entering and exiting the chamber, and physical distancing measures will be in place. I wish you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving and hope that you remain safe and healthy during this holiday season. Please take a moment this month to thank a Veteran, count your blessings, and remember, “You are not stuck at home, you are safe at home.”
