SAFETY TIPS FOR TRAVELING IN GRAND

Drivers/Motorized Vehicles

As residents return to Sun City Grand, they experience increased activity at our facilities, the roadways and sidewalks in the community. Since we have much greater vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic it is imperative that residents follow good safety practices to protect themselves and others from accidents. I have received numerous requests for an article on bicycle and pedestrian safety so I have provided a brief summary of Arizona Statutes that relate to roadway safety to further remind and educate residents on the “rules of the road.”

§28-735: Overtaking bicycles; civil penalties [this entire section was added with the «3-foot passing» legislation of 2000, see HB2625 of the 44th legislature 2nd regular session] A. When overtaking and passing a bicycle proceeding in the same direction, a person driving a motor vehicle shall exercise due care by leaving a safe distance between the motor vehicle and the bicycle of not less than 3 feet until the motor vehicle is safely past the overtaken bicycle. B. If a person violates this section and the violation results in a collision causing: • Serious physical injury to another person, the violator is subject to a civil penalty of up to five hundred dollars. • Death to another person, the violator is subject to a civil penalty of up to one thousand dollars. C. Subsection B of this section does not apply to a bicyclist who is injured in a vehicular traffic lane when a designated bicycle lane or path is present and passable.

When approaching a bicyclist on the street, a motorist can only pass if there is a distance of 3 feet between the vehicle and the bicycle. Less than that, the driver must remain behind the bicyclist. Drivers may not pass through a crosswalk until all pedestrians are completely out of the crosswalk.

Traditionally, of all the departments in a large community, Standards has been the least popular. Everyone dreads getting “the letter” or has an opinion about being told what they can and can’t do on their property. Here at Sun City Grand, we want to smash the stereotype and introduce the softer side of Standards. This department is tasked with enforcing the community standards of Sun City Grand. The department does not create the rules; the residents do that through their elected Board and its subsidiary advisory and standing committees. The standards are put into place for the enjoyment that is derived from a beautiful and harmonious look throughout the community. They also protect the property values for all of our owners. The Board believes it

Here are some changes that we will be introducing within the Department over the next several months. They include, but are not limited to: 1. Postcards – we will have available in the Standards office, a supply of blank postcards. How the program will work is similar to the purple compliance forms that people stop in and fill out about noted compliance issues. The difference here will be, your neighbors may stop in and report you … for being compliant! If your home is maintained in such a way that adds beauty and value to your neighborhood or if your home would help a neighbor sell their property, we want to thank you. So, anyone can fill in the address in the card and we will view the property and thank you for doing things right. 2. Positive, proactive staff inspections – if our inspectors, while out touring the property as part of the routine compliance check of neighborhoods, notice a home that is a shining example of what our Community Wide Standards are and appears to be

Home of the Month – we will take submissions from the residents (you can nominate your own beautiful property!), evaluate the postcard entries, and review the inspectors’ choices to select one home each month to recognize with a picture posted in the Standards office for the month. We want to recognize the huge majority of our owners who remain compliant with the governing documents year after year. 4. Quick compliance coupon – we recognize that you, as residents, do not have these rules memorized. You may be a part-time resident and weren’t aware of an issue or may have been given some bad advice through the grapevine about a change to your property. Things slip through the cracks and if we have to send you a letter asking for a correction, we want to reward you for getting the issue resolved quickly. We realize that you can’t fix a problem you weren’t aware of, so we want to reward those

6. Hiring another inspector for more proactive inspections – you asked and we responded! We have had many requests by residents for more proactive presence in the community. We realize that you want to promote harmony with your neighbors, but also value beautiful views from your windows and driving through your community. The Standards Department is required by the governing documents to provide the name of the person who reports a compliance issue. There is a procedure to be followed for the non-compliant homeowner to request this name. If an issue comes in anonymously, we can’t do anything about it. We can only send an inspector out to the property in question if we have a name and phone number to list on the report. So, we are expanding the department to be out in the neighborhoods more – hopefully “catching” you doing everything right. We thank you all for your desire to keep Sun City Grand looking like a true resort community. We hope that these changes will be well received and that everyone will join together in the effort to stay compliant (yes, that means weeds too!) and congratulate neighbors when they are doing a great job. Wouldn’t you appreciate hearing that?

Did you know why we have a provision for garage doors to remain closed except for when you are entering or exiting? Most people believe it is strictly based on avoiding the creation of an “eyesore.” But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Here are some really great reasons why you should keep the garage door completely closed: a. It prevents theft from garages (got to protect those new golf clubs, right?), b. It protects homeowners from unwanted entry into their homes (keeping your interior door locked at all times is advisable), and c. It blocks wildlife from wandering in when the door is open, even slightly (there was a bobcat family recently reported hunkering down for the evening in a resident’s garage).

Sun City Grand’s photography club, Grand Photos, has been competing with other Photographic Society of America (PSA) affiliated clubs internationally for the last 5 years. Interested club members submit photographs for the Photo Travel Division interclub competition that takes place three times a year. Grand Photos has always done well in these competitions, coming in 2nd or 3rd in its division, but this year Grand Photos came in 2nd place overall for the year, against 38 other clubs from around the globe. First place went to Cape Cod Viewfinders with 100 points, Grand Photos had 97 points and North Sydney (Australia) Photo Club had 96 points. In these competitions, each club is allowed to enter 6 photo travel images from 6 different photographers in their club, in each of the three different rounds. The club participants themselves choose which 6 images should be submitted to best represent Grand Photos. Clubs are placed into two divisions and judged by a club in the other division. The total scores of the club’s 6 images determine its standing in the round and the scores are cumulative until the end of the season. The playoff round consists of the top three clubs from each division submitting a total of 8 images, either new images or those that did well previously in the season. The Director of Interclub Competition is based in the UK and the 2016 playoff round images were judged in the UK.

photographs. They cannot use a “setup” situation and there are restrictions on the type of adjustments that can be made during digital processing. Second place overall is a wonderful achievement for Grand Photos and one of which we are very proud. Some of the high scoring images that contributed to our success are shown. It is pretty obvious that even though there are no location restrictions for a photo travel image, Grand Photos members enjoy traveling a lot!

Come join us! Grand Photos offers classes, workshops and photo shoots for all levels of photographers. Club members also put on travelogues one night a month starting in October through spring, at Cimarron Center. Stop in to the clubroom Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning. Club members are there to provide help and answer questions.

Ennis Miller

a Veteran You Should Know and One of our Own

Ennis Miller is a great neighbor who we are fortunate to have in Sun City Grand. He has a story to tell; actually he has many stories to tell. An African American retiree, he served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Still unable to land a good job, he reenlisted in the Army on February 28, 1946. He hoped to be placed in the Air Cadets but was not selected because “There was no quota for Negro Pilots.” Ennis was hugely disappointed. Mr. Miller experienced many incidences of racial bias throughout his military career. He endured these incidents and emerged with true grace and dignity.

I had the privilege and pleasure to accompany Ennis on an Honor Flight this past May. Honor Flight Arizona enables WWII veterans to visit Washington DC’s many memorials. The opportunity is being extended to the Korean Veterans and Rosie the Riveters as well. Returning to the war years, Nuremburg, Germany, 1945. As a member of the Military Police, Mr. Miller was assigned the task of rounding up Nazis and other German military personnel who were hiding out in tunnels under the city. He attended the Nuremburg trials and observed war criminals at the Palace of Justice. In 1946, Ennis was honorably discharged. Upon returning to the States, he was unable to find a decent job. He enrolled in flight school and obtained his private pilot’s license.

In 1950 he was assigned to Japan. His outfit was uprooted and taken to Korea. He, along with six other African American Military Police, was selected to set up the first POW camp in Taegu Korean. This is an unpublished but historical event. As the years passed, Ennis toured many areas, Fort Bliss, Texas, California, Chicago and Indiana to name a few. He had obtained the rank of Master Sergeant E7, however he sought the higher rank of E8. He contacted the Pentagon and was told that the only opportunities available to be come an E8, involved going to Vietnam. Training in boating, landing and harbor craft ensued and he shipped off to Vietnam. He became a 1st Mate on a 65-foot tugboat. This experience would lead him to receive the first of two Bronze Stars. Surrounded by burning, exploding and sinking barges with shrapnel everywhere, Ennis saved the lives of eight men by cutting a towline. This was a tricky and difficult task. He thought to himself, “God, I’m in your hands.” Indeed he was and still is in God’s hands. This heroic deed went unnoticed and unrewarded for thirtythree years. At the age of seventyfour, Mr. Miller finally received proper

recognition, the Bronze Star with “V” for Valor. His heroism capped a military career of twenty-two years, three months, and twenty-eight days. After leaving the military he was employed by Diebold Incorporated for fourteen and one half years. He retired in 1989 in Ohio. Ennis married his wife, LaVerne in 1989. Retirement meant little to Ennis and he kept very busy. He became an active VFW participant, a church trustee pro temp, President of the local Oxford Ohio NAACP and CEO of the Oxford Advisory Welfare. He was also vice chair of the Habitat for Humanity and ran for City Council. In 2003, Ennis and LaVerne moved to Sun City Grand where they are enjoying retirement. Mr. Miller turned ninety in June. Ennis quoted, “I know that I have valiantly served my country and now am able to enjoy the reward of my hard work because God has taken care of me at every turn.” Eileen Joy Vice President Armed Forces Support Group

The Tempe Festival of the Arts consistently ranks among the Top 100 Classic & Contemporary Craft Shows in the nation by Sunshine Artist magazine and has received the prestigious Pinnacle Award from the International Festival and Events Association. The spring and fall events each attract nearly 225,000 visitors to the Downtown Tempe over the course of a 3-day weekend. Quality independent artists are fundamental to the success of the event. Each Festival receives more than 700 applications from throughout North America, in 16 different visual arts categories that range from wood to photography to ceramics, wearable art, jewelry and other categories. From these applicants, a jury comprised of members of the local art community ranks the top artisans in each category to participate in the Festival, and the highest

ranking artists receive invitations to participate. During the Festival, a new jury selects the best overall artist and the top artist in each category and these winners receive cash honoraria awards. As many as 400 artist booths line Mill Avenue and the surrounding streets presenting unique, and hand-made artwork that offers visitors a distinctive shopping experience. While the Tempe Festival of the Arts focuses on visual art and the artists who create it, there also is a wide variety of other activity for guests to enjoy. Live entertainment provides fun for festival-goers. Performances throughout the venue keep audiences in high spirits throughout the day. In addition to the Festival Stage, street performers, food and beverage vendors, sponsor exhibits, and entertainment booths are set up for the amusement of Festival visitors. Called Club Solé, this 17,755 sq. ft. structure will serve as a “feel-good space” for residents and their guests seeking casual indoor and outdoor dining, spa services, a variety of recreational and exercise offerings, or just a “nice place” to spend time with friends and family. It will only be open to residents and their guests. We broke ground on Club Solé in May and plan to unveil it early in 2017. It will offer numerous amenities that promote a social and healthy lifestyle.

GARDEN Our landscape designers will create a garden that delights the senses. A gentle stream will begin in the garden and wind its way through the center of the clubhouse. Along the garden path, we’ll have three shaded seating areas where residents and guests can sit and commune with nature.

Additionally, many of the rooms have window panels inside pocket doors that can be opened to the outside when the weather is pleasant. The entire clubhouse is being built with smart technologies so it will be easy to adjust the temperature and lighting for each area depending on needs. Zaha Hadid also was quoted as saying that architecture “should be able to excite you, to calm you and to make you think.” I believe that Club Solé will live up to these expectations and then some. Dining The club will feature indoor and outdoor dining with a healthy-fare menu. Diners will be able to watch chefs prepare their orders in an open-style kitchen. The area also includes a large pizza oven and an indoor/outdoor bar.

This month, another of our personal trainers, Charlotte Versagi, offers a great article on the medical aspects of exercise. If interested in more information, Charlotte includes her contact information at the end of this article. I hope you continue to be inspired by learning how exercise can be one of your most effective tools in living a long and healthy life. Doesn’t it irritate you when someone says, “But it’s good for you?” It makes you want to flee in the opposite direction. And of course you’ve noticed how the “it’s good for you” movements change annually……one year you can drink all the coffee you want, the next year it’s off the list; then eggs come out of the “banned” closet, then the next year cardiologists ask you to steer clear. Yet there is something that has been showing up on the “it’s good for you” list for over a decade that has finally come center stage and there’s no ignoring it. The latest – and highly researched – “new” thing on the “it’s good for you list” is – you guessed it – EXERCISE. Organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine, the U.S. Department of Health and 26

Human Services, the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America and hundreds of researchers and physicians are now drawing direct parallels between longevity, mental health, physical health and quality of life and regular exercise. For the purposes of this article, I’ll focus on one impressive reference. Jordan D. Metzl, M.D. wrote the book Exercise Cure in which he not only clearly outlines the amazing positive, life-giving effects of medicine, he breaks down specific exercises for specific ailments. The book is broken down into references that prove how effective exercise is (“The Miracle Drug You Need to Take,”) then gives very specific exercises for brain and psychological problems, cardiopulmonary and heart disease challenges, metabolic problems, bone and muscle problems and yes, even hormonal and sexual dysfunction. The second section outlines exercise programs starting from the “beginner” level to “Go for the Gold.” Finally, he gives nutritional advice. Each section gives the medical research supporting how impressive exercise is in slowing or eliminating a specific medical problem – and then he gives very clear graphics for every exercise. It seems like such a small task, but did you know that during your annual wellness exam, many physicians are now asking their patients to simply “get out of a sturdy chair without using your arms.” Did you know that your inability or ability to perform this seemingly simple task is an important indicator of 1) your overall

fragility and 2) your longevity! Did you hear that? Your ability to get up and down out of a chair indicates how long you’re going to live and how fragile (vulnerable) are! If that’s not an argument for exercise, I don’t know what is. So what does “exercise” mean? Walking the dog? Playing golf? Running a marathon? The ideal is to perform 30 minutes of “cardio” exercise five days per week; perform some form of weight/ resistance training at least two days per week; and stretch every day. What’s “cardio”? Get yourself to the point where your breathing becomes a little challenged, when it’s not so easy to talk while you’re working out. The new research indicates you can actually do something for as little as 10 minutes at a time – as long as you total 30 minutes in a day. Vacuum with vigor, do yard work with a little more effort, push yourself walking across the parking lot, etc. Weight/resistance means using the Nautilus, Free Motion, bands, free weights, or mat (floor or bench) work that uses your body weight. And stretching means – stretching! Taking the time to really lean into that stretch and hold hold hold. At this point, I know you’re thinking “Oh boy, this is too much work,” and you’re putting down the magazine. Wait! I tell all my clients I train one thing I want you to think about: At our age, I can say that because I’m 68 years old and I’m aging too, every day we decide how we are going to age. Today, everything I do, I’m making the decision to “be looking for my walker” in five years – or if I’m going to be planning my next cruise or vacation, cleaning my own house, doing my own shopping and living life to the fullest. Exercise can make all the difference today, right now, in how you age. And it doesn’t come in pill form, the only “side effects” are feeling better. The “prescription” is easy and life-changing. Santa and the Missus chat in his workshop as the old guy prepares for his one day of annual work—delivery not by FedEx or UPS, but by the storied “sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.” All is well until this chat. Mrs. Claus is cranky, out of sorts, accusatory, “Santa, don’t leave me.” She has no concern about breaking the centuries-old tradition or shattering the hopes of many millions of “little ones” throughout the world. Since it’s Santa and Christmas there must be a happy ending in here somewhere. Come and see what it is.

Complete the Golf Cart Parade entry from provided. Return your entry form no later than Friday, December 9th. Applications are considered in order of receipt.

The parade will begin at 4:30 p.m. Golf carts will begin staging at 3:30 p.m. Be ready to roll out at 4:30 p.m.

Any entries with animals must provide supervision and clean up after any waste immediately.

Judging numbers and maps will be handed out at staging area before parade.

NO MORE than 3 people are allowed to ride in each golf cart at any time.

All cart entries except custom/classic/antique carts must be 80% decorated.

Golf carts must stay on the parade route and in the assigned order at all times.

Signage must not exceed 20% of entry decoration.

Decorations must NOT interfere with proper mechanical functioning of the golf cart. For example, decorations that would excessively weigh down the golf cart or impair tire or steering wheel movements are prohibited.

It is important to remember not to “hurry up” but to “keep up.” NO passing other golf carts at any time.

Participants are expected to behave courteously and appropriately at all times.

Any golf cart with questionable costumes, music, or decorations will be asked to remove the said item(s), or will not be allowed to participate in the parade.

All cart entries must be ready to be judged at 4:30 p.m. or the entry will not be judged and will not be eligible for a trophy. All cart entries must park and remain in their designated spots in the staging area after check-in.

Finally!! The train is leaving the station… DESTINATION: THE 21st CENTURY!! Six months of hard work by the Online Voting Ad Hoc Committee has resulted in Sun City Grand being able to offer Online Voting to all residents who choose to sign up. Beginning November 1st, Sun City Grand residents may register to vote Online for the up-coming Board election in January and all future elections. The deadline for registering for next year’s election is December 23rd. The committee, which is made up of Diane Hammann and Joan Mattick from the Election Committee, General Manager Ken Olson, Technology Coordinator Mark Jibilian, Board Treasurer Larry Marden, and Board Member Bob Aiken, has been working with the Online Voting provider to design elements which will meet the needs of all residents who decide to use Online Voting.

Why register to vote online? Some benefits include: n Saves monies for residents and the Association n Access to voting for those traveling n No lost or delayed mail service for winter residents n Reliable, accurate and timely information n Easy process n All information is secure and verifiable 32

Introduction to Glass Arts Class

The Glass Arts Club is offering an introductory class for those who want to join the Club and learn the basics of the glass arts. Over a period of six evenings participants will attend six sessions and complete 3 glass art projects using stained glass, fusing and mosaic techniques. Two highly skilled glass artists will provide instruction and guidance to participants: in the use of various glass types and equipment; techniques to cut, grind, foil and solder glass; and work safety protocols in the studio. Remember the old song? “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot!”” For some of us, this IS paradise! Residents of Grand, West, original Sun City, Corte Bella and Festival have a place to park their RV’s, boats, campers, camper shells and utility trailers at amazingly low rates thanks to the foresight of Del Webb. If you’ve dreamed of having an RV or a boat or other fun or utility vehicle but wondered what you’d do with it when you’re not using it…here’s your answer! The “compound” as it’s known, is located at 16315 N. 115th Ave. in Surprise…just south of Bell Rd. It’s open every day of the year from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (closed Christmas). The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to Noon. The parking compound shown above is the 4th iteration of an ever-growing amenity. The first lot was created in the early 60’s and has been moved 3 times to larger and larger properties. The newest lot, opened in January of 1985, has just under 4500 spaces for the various vehicles listed above. An

additional 400 spaces are to be added in the near future. A covered area has recently been built where you can house your vehicle out of the sun. That limited space currently has a waiting list. Another covered area is being considered as well as a covered “wash rack” where you can wash your vehicles out of the sun. Good stuff!

The facility is self-funded, no tax dollars are collected. Representatives from each community are on the board of directors, including your neighbors John Francis and Mike Betcher of the Sun City Grand RV club. There is a full-time staff of 7 including general manager, Tom O’Gara as well as a contracted Security firm.

Security is on duty 24/7 and a current resident photo-ID card is needed to enter. You may bring guests but they will be required to turn in their driver’s license while on the compound property.

Our popular Winter Event will be held on Friday, December 30 from 10 am to 12 noon. “SEX PLEASE, WE’RE SIXTY” Presented By SCG’s Drama & Comedy Club

WHAT A TITLE!!! “Calling all seniors,” it seems to say. Playwrights Michael & Susan Parker certainly know how to capture one’s eye and foucus our attention. But that’s the purpose of a headline (or play title).

a temporary transplant from the Deep South, Charmaine Beaureguard, wellbred and born to wealth. Even so, she is outgoing and sometimes described by those who know her well as “gushing” and “demonstrative.”

Picture a beckoning rustic B&B nestled in a pine tree forest, fronting an absolutely still lake, glistening in the early morning sun. Place it somewhere near a small and serene village in northern New England, perhaps not far from the Canadian border. Let your imagination tweak the scene to your liking, perhaps evoking a memory or two. Now you are in tune with Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast. Our proprietress is stern in attitude, precise in speech and manner, tolerates no departure from her household rules, the apex of efficiency. She caters mostly to the “over 60” crowd and strictly women. None lack the resources to meet Mrs. Stancliffe’s high rate structure, or the “fee-added” charge for a “box lunch” to take on a day’s outing. Her exorbitant “cleaning” fee appears on one’s invoice only at the end of a stay. This week the Rose Cottage B&B hosts

a small gathering of very fascinating and interesting folks. Let’s take a look at the guest register. In one room naps Victoria Ambrose, a renowned author. Renowned, that is, to those who revel in “hot, steamy, romantic novels.” Even if such is not for you, each new offering lands Victoria a potful of money. Yet, this author comes across as highly intelligent. Next we find

Although not a guest but a resident of the nearby village, Henry Mitchell is a daily visitor to the Rose Cottage B&B. A gentleman of the “old school” and retired chemist of note in certain research and university circles, Henry is an ardent admirer of Mrs. Stancliffe, thus his daily visits. Our third guest for the week is Hillary Hudson, well-educated, articulate, sophisticated, and served as a valued assistant to Henry for many years. She’s there at Henry’s specific invitation to test a yet untested mysterious “blue pill” he developed, strictly for the benefit of women “over 60.” Neighbor Bud “The Stud” Davis (or so he fancies) saunters in and out, making a nuisance of himself. His objective? Checking out the new crop of ladies who arrive each week. Brazen in manner and definitely chauvinistic, Bud is especially enamored with certain returning guests. But somehow he makes himself exceptionally likeable. Using this environment, this group, and this time, Henry plans to test his untested “blue pill.” As he is quoted as saying, “I saw some peppers advertised as a natural Viagra for..............,” he extracted the enzymes and voila! What might be the effects of this pill on the two genders of our species? Can they be described as “women’s vindicative revenge on men” or simply “role reversal”? Why did Henry develop this pill? Come join the audience to learn the answers and go home laughin’. Playwrights Michael & Susan scripted this as “An American Farce” and it certainly qualifies. As our audiences consist mostly of the “over 60 crowd,” we all will relate very well to the humor and hilarity generated by “Sex Please, We’re Sixty.”

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

PHOTO SHARING TIPS In last month’s article, Ron, a resident of Sun City Grand, asked Cappie if there were an app or website where he could combine, in one location, photos from the various devices he owns (camera, smartphone, tablet, PC) as well as those he posted to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Cappie reviewed several established photo sharing sites (Flickr, Google+, Photobucket, etc). and this month continues with the discussion of some newer specialty photo sharing sites. To recap, Cappie suggests that the ideal photo sharing site should have the option of 1) automatic syncing from all devices, 2) full-resolution image upload/ download capabilities, and 3) complete control over ownership and privacy (who sees your photo albums). Although it has been around for about three years, Cluster is a relatively new photo sharing site that has been recently revamped. As of this writing, storage is still free but it is rumored that future updates will include premium-for-pay options. While there is no automatic syncing, you can upload/download fullsized images. While the display format is similar to Instagram or Facebook, in terms of privacy, it is the exact opposite. It is a great option for privately sharing family/friends photos or special-event photos. You can invite people to join selective groups via emailed links. Members can view, comment, and share within the group you create. There is no limit on group size, so the app works equally well for small and large group events (like camping trips or family dinners) to larger events such as graduations, class or family reunions, and weddings. Any member of a group is able to download all posted photos to their computer or smartphone, in the full resolution the photo was taken.

Photos can be uploaded from your tablet or smartphone camera at the time when you take them or later; also from your PC photo folder. Pictures are viewed in photo feeds on your desktop or smartphone/tablet and each member of the group can like specific photos. Photos are organized chronologically according to when they were uploaded. You can add new members anytime, change permissions for posting photos, monitor and delete comments, etc. There are no actual photo editing options within the app itself. The Gallery View allows different ways of sorting, including by time taken, photographer, number of likes, and chronological order. Eye-Fi Cloud is especially good for folks who take their photos on multiple devices, especially DSLR cameras. If you take photos on your smartphone, tablet and with several digital cameras, it is a great way to back them all up online in one specific place. If you are using a digital camera, you will need an Eye-Fi memory card or Eye-fi Pro card (for RAW file formats) which

If you want to sell your images, you also have the option to build in a shopping cart, as well as guestbook and contact pages. There

The golf season is now upon us and the golf staff is ready to be of service. We hope that everyone had a great summer and is ready for a great golfing season. For many years, the Golf Advisory Committee and the Sun City Grand Board of Directors have wrestled with the idea of offering a refund on golf passes for those who have a major injury or illness. Well, after much debate and 2 different sub-committees I am happy to announce that there is now a refund policy available for those who need it. The trial refund policy that was passed by the Sun City Grand Board of Directors is as follows:

GOLF TRIAL REFUND POLICY (Effective September 1, 2016 through August 31, 2017) Approved August 11, 2016 Amended and Approved September 14, 2016

Over the years, many residents have had situations that caused them to not be able to fully utilize their golf pass that they have purchased. Also, more and more players have migrated over to the Resident Daily Fee category. In an effort to encourage more residents to purchase a pass to create more loyalty, the following refund policy is being requested. The refund will be issued for any reason. The refund policy would go into effect for one year as a trial period. All refund requests must be made prior to the expiration date of the effective pass.

MEET PAMELA WEIR…

the New Director of the Grand Singers and the Chorale By Judy Stuckey

It is a privilege to introduce to you the new director of the Grand Singers and the Chorale, Pamela Weir. Pamela came to SCG from the North Suburbs of Chicago, where she has been involved in music her whole life. She can’t recall a time when music was not a key part of her life! She has held a myriad of music related positions, many volunteer, through the years following her degree in Music Education. She attended Illinois Wesleyan University and Olivet Nazarene University. Pamela was the Director of Children’s Music for her church in Illinois where she directed Christmas Pageants and Mother’s Day shows. She also directed Children’s Musicals, including Annie, The Music Man and The Wizard of Oz. She directed a 12-piece orchestra, directed and accompanied a high-school girls’ choir, led a contemporary music team in Chicago, and recently directed a contemporary Praise Team in Surprise. For the past two seasons Pamela has conducted sectional rehearsals for the

Pamela Weir SCG Chorale, and last year she began leading sectionals for the Grand Singers. Pamela and her spouse, Ziggy, moved to SCG in September 2011, and she continues to work full time for the Bruce Gendelman Company, based out of Wisconsin. When Pamela was asked why she wanted to direct the Grand Singers, her first response was, “I absolutely love the Grand Singers!” From the first and only concert she attended, she knew she wanted to be involved. Pamela said, “I also said to myself, ‘someday I will be the leader of this group’!” (She didn’t realize that ‘someday’ would come so soon!) Pamela brings to all Singers the gift of energy, creativity and imagination. A quote she has always loved, (author

unknown) is: “Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it a rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.” Music has the power to create such positive feelings, and those feelings combined with emotion is what she will bring to us as Director of the Grand Singers and the Chorale. Pamela knows that with her Assistant Director and accompanist, Sherry Bennett, they will work tirelessly to continue to strengthen the group. Their combined goal is to have fun, smile and feel the joy that music can bring, sharing that objective with fellow Grand Singers and the community of Sun City Grand. Grand Singers concerts will be given at the Sonoran Plaza Dec. 10th and 11th, 2016 and April 8th and 9th, 2017. $10.00 tickets will be available at www. scgrandmusicclub.com, grandinfo.com, or at the Activities Desk. The Blackfoot Daisy (Melampodium leucanthum) is a plant that you may see in some of the common areas this year. The Blackfoot Daisy, Plains Blackfoot Daisy, or Rock Daisy is a low bushy perennial that forms an evergreen mound of around 6 to 12 inches. It prefers full sun and well drained soil. Blooms appear in early spring and will last through the summer. The flowers are white with a yellow disk center. The Blackfoot Daisy is a Southwest native and is a low water user. Blackfoot refers to

the foot-shaped brackets on the ray flower. Malampodium is from the Greek malas (black) and pod (foot). Leucanthum is from the Greek leucos (white) and anthos (flower). This plant is well suited around boulders and on hill sides as a ground cover. The Blackfoot Daisy is a Butterfly attractor with fragrant blossoms that remind you of honey. This plant would be a welcomed addition to any yard where a small showy plant is needed.

Have you lost something in the Village Area or out in the Community? If so, check at the Welcome Center to see if your lost item has been turned in.

Lost and Found is located in the Welcome Center in the lobby of the Palm Center. Open hours are 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. Or you can phone 623-546-7501 and ask the volunteers to check for your lost item. Valuable items such as cell phones and jewelry are kept in the Membership Office. The Golf Courses and Fitness Centers keep their found items, so if you lost something there, please check at those facilities.
