A Report From Your
Strategic Planning Committee By Ellie Brooks
Over 2,070 residents responded to the March 2016 Strategic Planning Committee’s survey which was designed to solicit resident reaction and input to several proposed future plans for our community.
Here are some highlights of the results: Topping the list of importance for residents is the maintenance and upkeep of the golf courses. Golfers and Non-Golfers alike (93.4%) understand the value of the pristine green ribbons of grass weaving through the community. The golf courses are visually appealing and residents recognize that the 400 acres of golf course property adds value to our homes. More than 71 written comments were received regarding golf related issues, including need for: shorter courses, improvement of the bunkers, keeping golf rates affordable, water conservations plans, and a new bathroom on Cimarron. Responses to the questions about our Restaurants ranked second in importance. Residents want the opportunity to provide input (94.2%) on the selection of the type of food service venues to be provided when the current contracts with CoCo’s and Angela’s expire. Residents, also, made it very clear (95.6%) that they do not want to eliminate the restaurants in favor of using the building space for Chartered Clubs and other community amenities.
water fountain and the White Tank Mountains.” Ken Olson, General Manager, and his staff are already planning an event for the Palm Center.
Chartered Club space made the list of the top four important issues. Residents agreed (91.6%) that a review of current space should be completed and an allocation policy developed before any construction of a new building is considered. At recent Board meetings two actions were recommended : (1) placing a moratorium on all Chartered Club building expansions until the strategic plan is completed (approved April 14), and (2) researching the cost to hire an expert to determine how we can maximize the use of our currently available space (May 12 BOD meeting.) Resident respondents were split almost equally (Strongly Agree 18.6%, Agree 28.1%, Disagree 26.9%, and Strongly Disagree 26.4%) on the idea of changing our name for “marketing purposes.” The idea presented suggests removing “Sun City” from our name to attract younger generations to buy our homes when we are ready to sell. Our legal corporate name would remain Sun City Grand Homeowners Association,
Inc.; but 44.2 % liked a marketing DBA (doing business as) name of “The Grand @ Surprise” and 22.63% liked “Grand in Surprise.” The Strategic Planning Committee is currently evaluating how this idea should be represented in the final plan. Also, garnering a split of opinion was the idea to reconfigure our 4-lane streets to improve their safety by providing a separate lane for alternative forms of transportation, such as bicycles, golf carts, etc. The vote: Strongly Agree 21.98%; Agree 35.32%; Disagree 28.15%; and Strongly Disagree 14.55%. The next generation of buyers (Baby Boomers) like outdoors fitness activities; bicycling will increase in our community in the next 10 years. All survey results are available on grandinfo.com under tab: SCG Board and CAM, click on Strategic Planning at the bottom of the left column. The over 800 survey comments received and have been read and categorized; the Strategic Planning core team members are now reviewing all your suggestions and comments. THANKS AGAIN for your interest in the future of our community!
One resident’s comment summed up the 91.5% positive responses regarding better utilization of the Palm Center and its spectacular view: “The one thing missing in Grand is a clubhouse where people can come have a drink, visit with other Grand residents, watch sporting events, and enjoy other entertainment. The old sales center (now Palm Center) would be an ideal spot overlooking the 11th hole of the Desert Springs Golf Course, the 10

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
Monsoon Madness Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager
For most that live here, the Arizona monsoon is a familiar part of late summer. The term “monsoon” comes from the Arabic “mausim” meaning “season” or “wind shift.” During the winter, Arizona’s wind flow comes from California and Nevada. During the summer, wind directions shift, coming from the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. It is this wind shift that puts into motion the roughly three months of rain, dust storms, and intense thunderstorms. Though very rare, monsoon can even spawn tornadoes. In 2008, the National Weather Service decided to take the guesswork out of monsoon start and end dates, officially making June 15th the first day of monsoon season and September 30th the last day. Serious damage can occur from high winds, flash flooding, lightning strikes, and dust storms. They may cause property damage, downed trees, auto accidents, drowning, power outages, and fires from lightning strikes. Most important is the loss of life that can be prevented by following some safety tips that we as a community encourage you to read.
High Winds n
n
n
Remove dead wood; it is unpredictable and brittle and cannot withstand the wind pressure in monsoon storms. Cracked trees are clear indicators of potential branch failure that may lead to splitting in forceful winds. Identify poor tree composition (branch structure), look for excessive leaning, long horizontal limbs, crossing branches that rub against each other and create wounds and narrow crotches (V-shaped instead
n
n
n
of U-shaped). Two trunks that are of identical diameter and have a narrow crotch are definitely not a good sign. Keeping your trees thinned out is the single most important thing to “stormproof” them. The denser the canopy of the tree, the more susceptible it is to be damaged in high winds. Move potted plants and any other property that is not bolted down, to an inside space. The last thing you need is for your lawn chairs to end up on the neighbor’s yard or in their windows. Heed all weather warnings issued and stay inside.
n
n
Lightning n
Flash Floods n
n
n
n
Avoid flooded roadways. If you see a sign that says “Do Not Cross When Flooded,” take it seriously. Remember, Arizona has a “Stupid Motorist Law” which allows municipalities and rescue agencies to charge people for the cost of being rescued if they fail to observe posted warnings. Keep children away from storm drains and washes. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, be aware of your surroundings and weather at all times. If you are caught in a wash, try to climb out on the roof of your vehicle and wait for help. Use your cell phone, if available, to call 911.
Dust Storms n
If your visibility is impeded by blowing dust, reduce your speed but keep driving straight. Do not change lanes unless absolutely necessary.
Area drivers will often use their emergency blinkers (hazard lights) because they are easier to see. Immediately pull your vehicle off the road as far right as possible, turn off your lights, turn off your car, and take your foot off the brake pedal. Otherwise, drivers may try to follow your tail lights potentially crashing into you.
n
n
n
n n
Lightning kills two people every year in Arizona on average, with many more sustaining permanent injuries. When you hear thunder, you are close enough to a storm to be struck by lightning. Take cover in a sturdy building, avoiding conductive wiring and plumbing. Stay away from open fields, high land, trees, utility poles, other tall structures, standing bodies of water including swimming pools, and metal objects like golf clubs and lawn chairs. If home, sit back and enjoy the sound and light show after you turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment. Stay off the phone, use cell phones for emergency purposes only. Keep your distance from windows. Make sure you round up all your battery operated equipment such as radio and flashlights and keep candles handy also.
While we spend most of the year in dry, warm weather, the Arizona monsoon offers a spectacular exception to that rule. You most likely will not hear anyone complaining about the weather. It is however, the time of year to be aware and be prepared.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
HAIL, KALE A superfood fit for royalty and the rest of us
Barbara Foster Executive Director, The Colonnade 623-236-3700
Registered dietitian Tracy Garrett from the Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing, part of our Sun Health family, keeps up with the trends in nutrition and does an excellent job of parsing what’s beneficial based on scientific research, and what’s a food fad. One of the more popular foods these days is kale. Here’s what Tracy has to say about it.
What are the health benefits of kale? It wasn’t long ago that kale was thought fit only for cattle or poor farmers from medieval times. Today, many hail kale as a “super food,” and it’s become a “fav” of celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Bacon, and Bette Midler. Grand Lifestyles | June 2016 | grandinfo.com
Tracy Garrett Registered dietitian
I’m always skeptical of such claims, but there is much evidence to support this vegetable’s star status.
Simple ways to add kale
Kale is a cruciferous vegetable (think cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, or Brussel sprouts) chock full of vitamins and minerals. It contains folate, which improves brain health; calcium, which strengthens bones; and fiber, which helps manage blood pressure and digestion.
n
It also contains iron and antioxidants. The iron benefits liver function and the antioxidants protect against various forms of cancer.
n
If that isn’t enough, one cup of kale is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which help combat arthritis, asthma, and autoimmune disorders.
It’s relatively easy to add kale to your diet:
n
n
n
Add kale to any salad or make a kaleonly salad dressed with olive oil and lemon juice Steam or sauté kale and serve it as a side dish Mix it in stir-fry recipes, soups or pasta dishes Cut up kale into bite-sized pieces, toss with a little olive oil and sea salt and pop it in the oven until crispy. These kale chips are a delicious and healthy alternative to potato chips and other high-fat, high-calorie snacks Add kale to a smoothie for an extra nutritional boost
Kale comes curly or flat and in a variety of sizes and its leaves can be green or purple in color. It’s available in most grocery stores or farmers’ markets. The most common type is curly kale or Scots kale, which has green, curly leaves and a fibrous stem.
Hop on the kale trail—
the one that leads to good health and wellness. 19

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
Allison Adams Fitness Manager 623-546-7463 Allison.Adams@ scgcam.com
This month I want to share with you a success story from resident Darlene Eggers. Darlene shared her own personal health success story with me after she completed the 5K in February. I thought you should hear about it too! I’m motivated when I hear about someone who has taken action to improve their quality of life. Darlene’s story reiterates for me the benefits of how taking care of ourselves can enhance daily living such as higher energy, less pain in movement, and improved numbers for blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose. I hope you are motivated too. I invite you to contact me if you have your own success story to share.
Renewal of Life by Darlene Eger 1. Lose 30 pounds, 2. To be able to do more activities with my young grandsons, and 3. To go into a store and buy regular size clothing.
My journey began in May 2012. I had developed a muscular problem due to stress. I was taken onboard a cruise ship in a wheelchair. I tried acupuncture on the ship and was soon able to use a cane. When I returned to AZ, I found a chiropractor who also used alternative treatments like acupuncture and Graston. After two years of testing, treatments and taking natural supplements, I was ready to increase the quality of my life. Weight loss was a top priority so there would be less stress on my muscles and joints. Also, my blood work results were: borderline diabetic, good and bad cholesterol not in acceptable range, and my thyroid medication needed to be at 150 mg per day for hypothyroidism. My heart rate was usually around 84. I was determined to live without medication for diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure. I set three goals for myself that I wanted to achieve in a year:
2012 22
2013
In the spring of 2014, I started working with a trainer. I learned about the function of the equipment at the Adobe and Cimarron fitness centers and exercises that I could do at home. Before this I was a slug. I never did any strenuous exercise. I would even circle a parking lot to wait for the closest spot to a building. Now people can see me working out the perspiration coming from my face. I actually get up one hour earlier than before so that I have time to do some exercises. Without this time my day does not seem complete.
My body fat went from 38% to 18% I have lost a total of 69 inches from my body. n Blood tests show no problems with diabetes or cholesterol. n My heart rate is usually in the upper 60’s. n My thyroid medication dosage has decreased to 112 mg per day. n n
I also started using a protein based nutritional program to improve energy, performance, weight loss, and healthy aging.
Do I ever get discouraged? Yes, but then I think of all the things I have done recently that were not possible previously – grasping my hands behind my back, jumping rope, getting up from the floor without holding onto something, being able to sit on and get up from a curb, not having to use a seat belt extender on a plane, playing laser tag with my grandsons, running up the sand dunes at the beach, parasailing, swimming with dolphins, zip lining, completing two 5K races, and taking boxing lessons.
I enjoy using the indoor pool to swim laps. Also, the indoor track is great for those hot, cold or windy days when I don’t want to be outside. I love the treadmill and enjoy using free weights.
My goals for the coming year are to lose 30 more pounds, take a self defense class called Krav Maga and to complete a mini triathlon. (You will see me training on the track, bikes, and in the pool.)
What have I accomplished? Here are just a few things that encourage me to keep exercising: n I have lost a total of 87 pounds. n I have gone from a size 28 to a 12.
I am thankful that I live in Sun City Grand. The staff and fitness facilities we have are fantastic. I am grateful to all those who have supported me on my journey to better health.

October 20, 21, 22 at 7 PM n October 23 at 3PM “PLAZA SUITE” Written by Neil Simon – Directed by Eileen Brooks Hilarity abounds in this portrait of three couples successively occupying a suite at the Plaza. A suburban couple take the suite while their house is being painted and it turns out to be the one in which they honeymooned years before. This wry tale of marriage in tatters is followed by the exploits of a Hollywood producer who, after three marriages, is looking for fresh fields. He calls a childhood sweetheart for a little sexual diversion who is more than the match he bargained for. The last couple is a mother and father fighting about the best way to get their daughter out of the bathroom and down to the ballroom where guests await her, or as Mother yells, “I want you to get out of that bathroom and get married!” Sonoran Plaza ~ Cash Bar for evening performances. Doors open at 6:30 PM and 2:30 PM ~ Tickets $12.00
December 1, 2, 3 at 7PM n December 4 at 3PM “SEX PLEASE, WE’RE SIXTY” Written by Michael and Susan Parker – Directed by Gail Leibowitz Mrs. Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed & Breakfast has been successful for many years. Her guests (nearly all women) return year after year. Her next door neighbor, the elderly, silver-tongued Bud “Bud the Stud” Davis believes they come to spend time with him in romantic liaisons. The prim and proper Mrs. Stancliffe steadfastly denies this, but really doesn’t do anything to prevent it. She reluctantly accepts the fact that “Bud the Stud” is, in fact, good for business. Her other neighbor and would-be suitor Henry Mitchell is a retired chemist who has developed a blue pill called “Venusia,” after Venus, the goddess of love, to increase the libido of menopausal women. The pill has not been tested. Sonoran Plaza ~ Cash Bar for evening performances. Doors open at 6:30 PM and 2:30 PM ~ Tickets $12.00

Free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other’s lives. The DIXIE SWIM CLUB focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of 33 years. Sonoran Plaza ~ Cash Bar for evening performances. Doors open at 6:30 PM and 2:30 PM ~ Tickets $12.00

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT Dear Cappie, I was told that I should uninstall old programs I am no longer using on my PC, smartphone, and tablet—especially the QuickTime Movie player. My neighbor said the Windows version of the program is no longer supported by Apple and has known security vulnerabilities which could compromise my PC. I have never uninstalled a program. Help! Alice (and my cat Jake)
How to Uninstall apps app you want to uninstall. You may need to swipe right or left to find the app. Touch Uninstall or Disable. As with Apple Apps, if you uninstall or disable an app, you can add it back to your device without buying it again.
Dear Alice and Jake, First let me correct the statement about QuickTime for Windows: computers running QuickTime for Windows will continue to work after support ends. Anyone using a Mac need not worry at all: Apple’s QuickTime for Mac is still supported with security updates. Your neighbor is correct, however, that using unsupported software from any developer may increase risks from viruses and other security threats, so you should uninstall QuickTime for Windows to avoid the aforementioned risks. This also applies to Apple’s Internet Browser Safari for Windows, which Apple has also stopped updating. To uninstall a program on a Windows computer, regardless of what version of Windows you have, go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features. Select a program (QuickTime in this instance), and select Uninstall. For Windows 10 and 8 users, hit the Windows key + X, and you’ll see Control Panel in the list. The QuickTime uninstaller will remove both the QuickTime desktop application and the QuickTime browser plug-in. To uninstall QuickTime or any other
app from an Android device, go to the device’s Settings app and select Apps or Application manager. Touch the
To uninstall any app from your iPhone or iPad (but not pre-installed apps like Apple Watch, Health, Facetime, etc.), start your iPhone or iPad and press the Home button below the screen to find the icon for the app you want to delete (you may have to scroll through several screens if you have lots of apps). Once you find the app, press and hold the icon for a few seconds. It (and all the other icons on the screen) will start to wobble. A small “x” will appear in a grey circle by each app. Tap the “x” for the app you wish to delete and when a screen pops up, confirm you want to delete the app. If you ever change your mind and want to get the deleted app back, know that the Apple’s App Store will remember that you have already bought it. Find the app in the App Store and it will offer the option to download it once again. Just click download and you won’t be charged for the reinstalled app.
For information about installing or uninstalling programs or apps, visit the Grand Computers Club. The Club is located in the Chaparral Center. If you are a member you can talk to a tech volunteer every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. Please be sure to bring your device with you. Check out the club website: www.grandcomputers.org (note: summer hours for the computer club are: 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Mon thru Fri). FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
The transition from the winter ryegrass to the base summer Bermuda grass is underway. Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations 623-546-7402 jeff.hochman@ scgcam.com
As the temperatures start to heat up, the Bermuda grass starts to wake up from dormancy. At the same time, when the temperatures start to get too warm, the cool season (ryegrass) starts to die off. The staff aids in this transition by doing the following - chemical applications of products to encourage the ryegrass to become weak, and mechanical operations such as aerifing and slicing the turf. The nighttime temperatures need to be above 60 degrees for several days in a row and the soil temperature at a 4-inch depth needs to be above the 65-degree mark for the Bermuda grass to start actively recovering. Areas that have had a lot of traffic and that are in the shade will tend to take longer to recover. Each course will be closed for 3 weeks as in the past several years to allow an outside company to deep-tine aerify the courses with ¾ inch solid tines and then spread 35 tons of sand per acre on each fairway. This will also aid in the transition process giving the Bermuda grass some essential items such as air, water, and nutrients. During this time the courses are also heavily fertilized and irrigated. A few years back the staff adopted some
38
new maintenance practices on the greens to allow for golfers to have better conditions more often. Staff used to perform multiple aerations on the greens throughout the summer and golfers constantly played on aerified greens. Staff now does a very intense aerification during the 3-week closure which allows us to not have do any more throughout the summer (some minor disruption may still occur). It does take a little longer to recover, but overall the golfers will putt less on aerified greens. Studies recommend that you should disrupt at least 25% of the surface area each year to have a healthy base grass. This process achieves that goal.

Honey Bees in Sun City Grand Workers will sting perceived intruders. The stinger is uniquely barbed in honey bees, making it difficult to extract. The queen does not leave the hive unless she is in search of a new hive location; her only job is to produce offspring
This Article was provided by Mike Secrist from Gothic Grounds Management
The honey bee population is very much alive and well in Sun City Grand. Last year, approximately 200 hives were eliminated on common areas alone and many more on the golf courses along with private residences.
A new queen is allowed to grow and leave the nest taking some of the hive with her. They will typically swarm to a tree branch and surround the queen while the scouts search for a new location. In this state they are normally considered to be non-aggressive and will usually be gone within 2 to 4 days. We need the bees to help pollinate our fruit and flower trees, but unfortunately they sometimes locate too close to our walking paths and homes and for safety concerns, they must be removed.
The picture to the right is a hive swarm on the Cimarron course. A beehive can consist of as many as 40,000 members and splits for one of two reasons. As the queen begins to age, her pheromone production drops, which can be detected by the workers. Sometimes the hive simply grows too large and more space is needed. A hive can divide as many as 8 times annually but generally this occurs 4 to 7 times.
There are three types of honey bees in a colony: the queen (of which there is only one), drones, and workers. Drones are fast flyers, adapted for mating (after which they die). Workers are sterile females who have a variety of “jobs”: to build and protect the hive, gather nectar from plants, feed the larvae. The drones and queen clean and repair cracks in the hive.

CITY OF SUPRISE UPDATE
Community Vitality
The vitality of a community lies in its people. We see it manifested in the work of the HOA’s which oversee management of neighborhoods throughout the Jim Biundo Vice Mayor City, for, indeed, the decisions Council Member, District 2 made by HOA’s ultimately are decisions which shape Surprise. We see it in engaged citizens who volunteer in schools and hospitals, and we see it in proud citizens who consistently turn out to vote at election time. The concept of “Community Vitality” is very similar to concepts like sustainability and quality of life. Various definitions can be found in the literature. W. Grigsby, Penn State University in Community Vitality: Some Conceptual Considerations, 2001, said, “Competent communities collaborate and work effectively in identifying problems and needs of community, achieving a working consensus on goals and priorities, and agreeing on ways to implement the agreed-upon goals and priorities.” K. Scott, Community Vitality, 2009, Ottawa Canadian Council on Social
Development, defined vital communities as those which are strong, active, and have inclusive relationships between residents, the private sector, the public sector, and civic organizations so that a community can create, adapt, and thrive in a changing world and, by so doing, improve the well-being of its citizens. An Oregon State University study notes that community vitality is “the ability of a community to sustain itself into the future as well as provide opportunities for its residents to pursue their own life goals and the ability of residents to experience positive life outcomes.”
Flora, et al. in Measuring Community Success and Sustainability, Iowa State University, 2001, indicated that vitality includes increased use of the skills, knowledge, and ability of local people; strengthened relationships and communication; improved community initiative, responsibility, and adaptability; sustainable, healthy ecosystems; and appropriately diverse and healthy economies. Dale, Ling, and Newman, in Community Vitality: The Role of Community-level Resilience and Adaptation in Sustainable Development, examined a number of communities and concluded that the following conditions encourage communities to address development challenges: 1. Community openness and trust, 2. Connection with people and place, 3. Continuity and stability, and
“Community Vitality is the nature and quality of people and places around you. Indicators include volunteering, providing assistance to others, and belonging to community” Institute for Well-being
4. Perturbation (Change stimulates innovation and creativity, which, in turn, leads to community action). Authors Mindy Crandall and Lena Etuk, Oregon State University Extension Services, conclude, “The end goal is for a community to develop the capacity to realize the following

In February, 2015, the City of Surprise established a newly designated department of Human Service and Community Vitality (HSCV). The Department was formed from three existing departments: Neighborhood
Services, Senior Services, and Grants Administration. The overall mission of the new department is to build partnerships to improve the overall quality of life in Surprise. Recent developments in the Department include the opening of the Surprise Resource Center and Community Action Program (CAP) Office located at the City’s AZ TechCelerator campus on Bell Rd. The program is funded through a partnership with Maricopa County and focuses on providing limited temporary assistance with utility payments, rent, and housing for qualified residents. Employment services also are available now at the Surprise Resource Center thanks to a new partnership formed with Arizona@ WorkMaricopaCounty.
more than forty events each year with over 20,000 attendees each year. Pride Day is devoted to volunteer clean-up. Mediation services are designed to assist in resolving neighbor disputes. The Surprise Senior Center is an active, engaged site for citizens age 50 or over and disabled adults. A number of classes and activities are scheduled daily, which include wellness classes, an exercise area, card games, and more. The Community Development Block Grant is coordinated through HSCV. As an entitlement community, Surprise receives yearly funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funds benefit low to moderate income persons. Priorities include public services and neighborhood improvement projects. Public service agencies receiving funds for FY16-17 include Ability 360, Central Arizona Shelter Services, Benevilla, Mentally Ill Kids in Distress, Potter’s House (An after-school tutoring/mentoring youth services program), and the Surprise Youth Employment Program.
Neighborhood Services coordinates programs and activities which help residents re-invest in their neighborhoods. Twenty-five to thirty-five Surprise homes per year go through grant-funded rehabilitation or replacement. The Block Party Trailer program encourages groups of neighbors to gather together to get to know each other better. The program supports
