Fitness Manager’s Message
Hello Sun City Grand Members
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Raise your hand if you are tired of the restrictions in your life due to the pandemic. I can say with confidence that the last several months have forced our team to pause and redirect our ideas about planning for the fitness department this summer an onward. Without a precedent on how to operate during a pandemic, SCG Fitness is paying close attention to recommendations from the CDC, our state Health Department, and national leaders in the fitness community. We have in place, protocols which meet the suggestions by the CDC, and the requirements outlined by the AZ Dept. of Health and the Sun City Grand Board of Directors. We are prepared to re-open when our Governor grants permission to do so. With constant media attention on the issue of COVID-19, volumes of information have already been shared on how to maintain your safety. Our focus is to provide opportunities for you to treat your health and wellbeing now, regardless of whether our fitness facilities are open or not. Making healthy lifestyle choices is one of the ways to maintain your safety. It’s no surprise that exercise is a great tool to boost the immune system. We hope you are taking measures to keep your body moving, not only for the physical advantages, but the mental value as well. The isolation many of us are experiencing is one facet that takes a toll on us physically and mentally. It’s easier to slide into a more sedentary way of life since our ability to move about has become more of a challenge. We want to help with that. Back to the concept of the effects on physical and

mental health with regard to isolation. In our attempts to fend off a serious virus, we are putting other aspects of our health at risk. Clothing manufacturers are selling inventory in higher size ranges since March 2020. Revenue for the sale of processed foods have gone up. Reports on “quarantine fatigue” have shown increases in anxiety, emotional distress and depression. An increase for counseling services and psychiatric medication have risen. The benefits of social interaction and physical movement should be prioritized to offset the results of our current way of life. Let’s remember that exercise benefits brain health as it does the physical being. In addition to body benefits, blood flow increases the vasculature of the brain to help reduce the risk of dementia. This improved blood flow also improves neural activity, which helps in better motor control (balance), executive function, attention, learning memory and mood (now you’re talking). We are excited that we have
launched a limited number of group fitness classes both online, via Zoom, and outdoors at the pavilion. As weather permits, and as we watch for interest in outdoor classes, more will be added. Aqua Aerobics classes are in the works on a limited basis and may already be up and running by the time of this printing. Maybe you read the email from August 5 outlining exactly how to register for both online and outdoor fitness classes. If you didn’t, here’s the link to get you started. Reservations and payment are made through the Grand Learning reservation site, ASAP. You can watch the tutorials on how to register at https://www.suncitygrand. com/Home/Components/ News/News/2824/303 So, we encourage you to get moving. Stay in touch with friends and family. We are so fortunate to have technology that can keep us connected to one another, and to have access to physical activity in a variety of ways. We wish you a safe and happy September!

Zoom Town Hall on Residential Design Guidelines
WEDNESDAY
The Architectural Review Committee and Subcommittee and the CAM Standards Department are undertaking a review of the current Sun City Grand Residential Design Guidelines (RDGs). The RDGs apply to all exterior modifications to residential properties in Sun City Grand, and are one of the ways in which our community stays attractive and current. This review has several goals, including making sure the RDGs are clear and internally

consistent, removing unnecessary items, adding items that need guidelines, and modifying existing guidelines to take account of new developments and resident opinion. Part of this review process is to get residents’ views on the current RDGs, and on changes to the RDGs that would be appropriate. Pre-COVID-19, we would have had an in-person Town Hall in the Grand Ballroom or Cimarron. That is currently not possible, so we will have a virtual Town Hall via Zoom, on Wednesday, September 9th, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. You can use Zoom on your desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. If you need assistance with setting up Zoom, you can visit the Sun City Grand website for information. Please join us on September 9th!

The Stats of Our Community
Debbie Goodman Membership Manager
Ever wonder what our average age is, or how many resales there are in Sun City Grand every year? The average age in Sun City Grand is now 73. That’s a .56 increase from one year ago. The number of homes with owners under age 55 is less than 2%. We had 682 homes that closed escrow in the year 2019. Of those closings, 22% were Sun City Grand owners purchasing another Sun City Grand home. An additional 19% were Arizona buyers other than SCG. Beyond Arizona, the State with the most closings was Washington with 10%. Although there has been a decrease of visitors stopping by our Welcome Center due to the Covid-19 restrictions, our home sales have remained strong. As of July 2020, we have had 390 homes that closed escrow.
CARE Fee
Effective July 1, 2020, the CARE fee is $3,500.00. The CARE fee is a one-time fee to each new purchaser. The CARE fees are used only for expenses related to (a) planning, developing or expanding new community facilities or programs, or (b) capital projects.

Since we are from Alaska, we tend to catch and eat quite a bit of Salmon during the summer months. I enjoy having our Alaska Salmon canned so we can use it in various types of recipes throughout the year. My "Alaska Salmon Burger" is one of our favorites. Although we love to fish for all species of fish, the Silver Salmon from Resurrection Bay in Seward, Alaska is definitely my favorite. Alaska Salmon Burgers
INGREDIENTS
n 2 Cans of Alaska Salmon (I prefer to use Silver Salmon caught in
Resurrection Bay in beautiful
Seward, Alaska) n 2 Tsp of freshly squeezed Lemon
Juice n 1 Egg (beaten) n ½ Cup of Panko Bread Crumbs n ½ Cup of Mayonnaise n 2 Tablespoons of chopped red onion n 2 Tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley n 1 Tablespoon of chopped fresh dill or ½ tsp of dried dill n 1 Tsp of dry mustard
DIRECTIONS
Drain canned salmon, (reserving 2 tablespoons of the liquid;) Flake the salmon into a bowl. Sprinkle with freshly squeezed lemon juice. Add panko bread crumbs, mayonnaise, beaten egg, chopped red onion, parsley, reserved liquid from the salmon, dill weed and dry mustard. (Use fresh herbs if possible.) Mix well. Form into 4 or 5 patties depending on your burger size preference. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled. (I usually let them chill for a couple of hours.) Pan fry the burgers in a lightly oiled skillet on medium heat for about 5 minutes or until lightly browned; turn the burgers over halfway through cooking time. Place Salmon patty on bottom half of each bun. Top with homemade tarter sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion. If preferred, you can also add a slice of cheese to your salmon patty while it is cooking.
HOMEMADE TARTER SAUCE
n ½ Cup Mayonnaise n 2 Tablespoons of Sweet Pickle Relish n 1 tsp of lemon juice n ½ tsp of Dijon mustard n 2 Tablespoons of finely chopped green onion (optional) n Mix together Burger is best served on a Fresh Kaiser Bun with Sweet Potato Fries, Watermelon Wedge, Veggie Garnish and a cold “Alaska Amber Beer.” Enjoy! Don Bartolotta This is our family’s Famous Bartolotta Burger. It is usually prepared on special occasions. It is a stuffed hamburger, generally stuffed with whatever each person may want. This particular burger is stuffed with sautéed mushrooms, bacon bits, onion and cheddar cheese, served on a hollowed out Italian roll and garnish with jalapeño and sweet pickled red peppers. And let me tell you it was delicious!!
