ual Summer Shoo Dog Food- It’s a t Wrap Delmarva

Another year comes to a close and for Delmarva Unleashed, we have reached a milestone. With this Holiday issue we celebrate five full years as “Delmarva’s Dog Magazine.” In 2010, we began Delmarva Unleashed as a “duel” magazine, with our signature title, Grand Living. The dual magazine was a first on the Shore and it’s uniqueness made for much conversation. In time, the portion that was Delmarva Unleashed began to over-take Grand Living and it was time to spin off. With the Early Summer edition of 2013, Delmarva Unleashed was ready to stand alone and DU’s own Mr. Darcy took the cover position on that premier issue. Delmarva Unleashed was a publication we began totally for fun. Our core publication, Inside Ocean City, compiles in about five months of the year, so we needed something else to fill the void. We we didn’t anticipate is that Delmarva Unleashed would grow into the readership that we now have; reaching almost 220,000 dog people across the Eastern Shore, in the Baltimore/DC Metro area and in the surrounding states. We would like to extend a resounding thank you to our loyal readers who have made the success of Delmarva Unleashed possible. We know we couldn’t have done it without you! 4

Pooch Palooza will move to the Spring in 2016. To really grow our event, we needed to have a weekend that held less conflicts with other canine events in the Mid-Atlantic region. The potential arrival of hurricane Joaquin and the Nor’ Easter spinning off shore forced our hand and we simply packed up the event moving forward with our endeavor. If you are holding tickets, they will be honored and all contest registrations are still good. Please visit PoochPalooza.com for updates on the events and new ones we may ad. We now have six more months to expand our offering! In 2016, we have more canine fun in store. A reader once said that they loved that we always have something going on, either in the community or online and that’s it’s just fun to be a part. I think about that comment often, as we plan our next year. We hope you continue to enjoy Delmarva Unleashed and our endeavors. Please visit our advertisers, they make this publication possible. From our family to yours, warmest holiday wishes!

Owney, the postal dog, from the National Postal Museum.

Bark of the Town

Owney the Postal Dog In the late 19th century, Owney, the postal dog, rose to fame. It is generally believed that his owner was a mail clerk who took his dog to work. Owney just loved the scent and texture of mail bags and followed them by land, train, or boat, wherever would travel. Soon he began to really tally up the miles, traveling throughout the Country and later around the world. Mail clerks were happy to let

him travel with the mail as they noted that no train Owney traveled on ever crashed, making Owney a goodluck charm. Over time postal clerks began giving Owney little tags and medals to attach to his collar, representing the places he had traveled. When he’d received so many tags they no longer fit his collar, he was provided a jacket which allowed more tags to be adorned. Hailed as the mascot for the Railway Mail Service, on July 27, 2011, Owney’s likeness was issued on a U.S. Postal Service “forever” stamp. The stamp is no longer for sale, but has become a collector’s item.

Now Hear This Studies conducted at several universities indicate most dogs hear within a range of about 67- 45,000 hertz. They can hear many sounds and on frequencies that humans cannot even begin to detect. What most humans can hear clearly at 20 feet, dogs can hear crisply at approximately 80 feet. In short they hear about 4 times better than we do. And we wonder why they are always at the window barking about something? 6

How Much is Too Much? Dogs Should Have Zero Alcohol!

Dogs are far more sensitive to alcohol than humans. Each year, dogs are poisoned by cocktails and brews casually left within their reach. Signs of intoxication can often be seen within 15 minutes of ingestion. Dogs are particularly drawn to drinks containing milk such as White Russians and Eggnog. Similar to humans, alcohol intoxication in dogs commonly causes vomiting, loss of coordination, disorientation and stuphor. In severe cases, coma, seizures and death may occur. According to the ASPCA Poison Control Center, dogs who are so inebriated that they can’t stand up should be monitored by a veterinarian until they recover.

Dog Food- It’s a Wrap F

or the last five issues we have been offering information on buying quality dog food. We talked to many dog food companies, some at length, including VeRus Pet Food and Beaverdam Pet Food, both businesses that call the Shore home. While talking to companies outside of the region we spoke with their public relations people, who of course only told us what we were supposed to hear. Some left us with more questions and others more confidence in their products. On the local level, Delmarva Unleashed sat down with the company owners and the passion they expressed in producing quality foods was very inspiring. They wanted to look people in the eye and feel confident that they were producing a food that neighborhood dogs would not only love, but thrive on. Each company owner had explored many options for

by Sandy Phillips pre-mix and ingredient sourcing. It was inspiring to see their level of commitment. While the bottom line was of course important to both, we clearly heard that compromising quality was not an option. Since Delmarva Unleahsed began this dog food series, some of the top holistic companies have experienced recalls. While it’s concerning, they should be given credit for announcing a recall before dogs became sick. Very few dog food companies avoid a recall in their lifetime, although it is a standard many strive for and some can even say they have achieved thus far. Still, as a pet owner, diligence remains key. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has started more testing of dog foods, particularly the raw diets, so there may be more forthcoming. Delmarva Unleashed Holiday 2015

9

In 2015, some dog food and treat companies have changed hands and we think they bear watching. While change can be good, when a dog food company goes from a family business to just another cog in the corporate wheel, the bottom line can become more important than the quality of the food. Tale-tell signs will certainly show up in your dog, perhaps in thriftiness or digestive issues. However, before you throw the dog food company under the bus, be sure your dog has not become “food intolerant,” or that it’s time for a veterinary check-up. Delmarva Unleashed continues to receive calls and emails asking what we feed our own dogs. We never recommend because each dog has unique dietary needs. We refer readers to their veterinary professional for nutritional requirements, and then suggest they do their homework on a variety of brands that will meet those requirements; ultimately making an informed choice for their dog. We also like to remind dog owners that they may need to revisit the topic of diet, if your pet becomes a couch potato in the winter months and then an athlete during the warmer 10

Delmarva Unleashed Holiday 2015

seasons. Like humans things change; puppies mature and aging dogs need a more senior meal plan etc. In synopsis, please don’t just grab the least expensive bag on the shelf. It really is full of junk and fillers, some with known carcinogens. Your grocer is simply unloading what’s on the truck; it’s what corporate purchased and offered the best profit margin. What’s on that shelf may have nothing to do with the health of your dog at all. In the long run, you will most likely shell out more in a variety of veterinary cost from the damaged caused by a poor diet. Visit your local pet store, they have often sifted through hundreds of brands to offer you only a select group of foods. They value your business and are looking for a long-term relationship, so they have your dog’s best interest at heart. Most have trained staff that can assist you with your dog food choices and provide you with additional resources specific to your pet’s needs. This year, make feeding your dog a quality diet part of your New Year’s resolution. You will both win!

ach year we check out the latest and greatest products for our dogs. We also revisit some favorites as they often continue to set the pace in the industry. Brands like Hip Doggie and Up Country just always come to the top in our research. You can’t dispute quality you find in a $60 human sweatshirt that is translated into a dog hoodie. Yes, you will pay a little more, but you will also have the same quality hoodie and it will look like a quality hoodie for several years. If you purchase dog clothing, you know how long the less expensive garments last. Often one trip through the dryer and they frae and pill. Next... Toys and treats are also a holiday favorite and after a year-long topic of quality dog food, we just had to choose some high quality snacks for your consideration. If you would rather bake your own, we also included a couple of great recipe in this issue as well.

We revisited some stellar toys this year, but if you’re on a tight budget and don’t want to buy that adorable plush toy with a squeaker, the one that will be shredded across your living room in minutes, there are always coconuts in the grocery store that aggressive chewers will at least have to battle for a couple of weeks. You also might opt for some healthy marrow bones that can be refilled with xylitol free peanut butter for more fun. Be sure they are only enjoyed under supervision. We have seen some get caught over canine teeth, resulting in a veterinary visit to have it removed. The longer bones are a bit less troublesome. Be sure your dog has something under the tree. Canine sociology studies show that dog’s can become depressed when left out of family celebrations and yet they are exuberant with even the smallest gifts. We hope the following list will help make your dogs holiday merry and bright!

“Sawmill Creek” Means Quality There are oodles of chews on the market, but quality can be a concern. We were sold on Sawmill Creek the very first time we opened their product. Their chews smell delightfully fresh, like they came right out of your own smoker. Sawmill Creek sources their ears only in the US, from purveyors with safe and humane processes and all of their products are human grade. The family owned business slow cooks their ears for 3 days with real hickory wood. Their ears are never brined, radiated or in contact with any chemicals. Totally DU canine staff approved! They are not available on the Shore as of press time, however they offer a variety of chews on their website at DogTreatHouse.com. Prices vary.

The Big Chill

hile you think about settling in for a long winters nap, take some time to learn about keeping your pets as warm and comfortable as you are. There will be many days ahead that include ice and freezing temperatures, and cold weather can be just as hard on pets as people. Many pet owners often forget that their dogs have grown accustomed to the warmth of a home and feel the chill just like we do when the temperatures plummet. Dogs should not be left outside for long periods of time when it’s very cold and damp. Little dogs and older dogs are even more sensitive to the weather change. Many house pets never grow that long winter coat, like animals in the wild. For some a sweater or jacket is a must. Even dogs that live outside year round need extra protection from the winter elements. 18

Delmarva Unleashed Holiday 2015

A snug dog house and a non freezable water source are absolutely necessary for winter comfort. Planning ahead will ensure your dog has a good winter experience. Have a back-up plan for those outdoor dogs. When the elements become harsh with snow and wind, maybe you should establish a place in the home for them. On a very blustery night, with below freezing temperatures a laundry room or bathroom floor, with a warm blanket and water would be very welcome. Surprisingly many outdoor dogs are so relieved to be out of the elements they will demonstrate exemplary behavior. Keep in mind that unless they are staying in for the winter, they should have brief stays in the warmth so their bodies can make the proper adjustments. They should return to the protection of a quality

house when the weather breaks. This is a good time to mention that dogs residing indoors, most of their lives, accompanied by plenty of appropriate outdoor exercise time, live longer, healthier lives with less exposure to the elements. We should touch briefly on paw protection, although it’s really more of a “Chicago” weather experience as opposed to winters on the Eastern Shore. If your dog spends a lot of time walking or standing on ice or frozen ground, his paws will suffer in the long run. Paws are not covered with fur on the bottom so there is little protection from the severe cold. Long exposure to cold surfaces can result in cracked or sore pads. Be observant of the dog that licks the bottom of his paws frequently during the winter. There are several varieties of “paw balm” on the market which will sooth, much like a chapstick. Check with your vet for suggestions, particularly if your dog’s paws begin to bleed from exposure. There are also boots for dogs these days, if you choose to purchase a set for your pooch, be sure to look for the ones with traction and make sure to speak with knowledgeable pet store staff about sizing. Some brands, similar to house slippers, seem as if they would just create other problems for your dog. Shop with care here. De-icing salt can also pose paw/ health problems for dogs. Be sure to wash paws after walks along salted sidewalks and drives. Not only is it a skin irritant, but most de-icing products are not safe for ingestion. There are lots of hidden dangers lurking outside during the winter. If

you live near a pond or other body of water, remember than rambunctious dogs running off leash can easily fall through ice, creating a life-threatening emergency. Winters on the shore are rarely harsh enough to freeze ice to a safe depth to support your dog. If you must let your dog loose near open bodies of water, be sure to supervise them at all times. Lastly, remember that your dogs nutritional needs may change during the colder months. Talk with your veterinary health care provider about your dogs activity level. Hunting dogs may need extra calories to help them stay warm while working in the cold. Dogs that become “couch potatoes,” once the chill sets in, may need a lighter diet so they don’t pack on the winter pounds. Delmarva Unleashed Holiday 2015

Holiday Dog Treats While you’re in the kitchen whipping up holiday treats for friends and family, don’t forget the dogs. Holiday treats are for the entire family and these recipes will have your pups eagerly waiting for warm goodies.

Gingerbread Snacks 3 cups whole wheat flour 2 Tbsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground cloves 1/2 cup molasses 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup canola oil Preheat oven to 325° F In a large bowl, whisk together dry ingredients. In another bowl combine wet ingredients. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry. Mix well. Refrigerate your dough for 1/2 hour and then roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into shapes of your choice. Move the cut outs to a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Allow cooling before four legged taste testing. Store in an airtight container for approximately two weeks. Yields about 2 dozen. 20

Delmarva Unleashed Holiday 2015

Blueberry Muffins 1 cup of rolled oats 1 cup of whole wheat flour 1 1/2 tsp of baking powder 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 egg 3/4 c buttermilk 1/4 c applesauce 1 c fresh blueberries Preheat oven to 400째 F Grease and flour a muffin pan or use muffin cup liners. Combine oats, flour, baking powder and cinnamon in a bowl. In another bowl, combine egg, milk and applesauce. Slowly add wet ingredients to dry and mix well. Gently stir in berries. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full and bake for 20 minutes or until just brown. Yields approximately 12 regular size muffins.

Bananas Peanut Butter Grain Free! 1 ripe medium banana 3 Tbsp of Peanut Butter (Be sure your brand does not contain xylitol!) 1 large egg 1 3/4 c garbanzo bean flour *You can often find both xylitol free peanut butter and garbanzo bean flour in the gluten free or natural foods section at your grocer. Preheat oven to 300 degrees In a small bowl, mix together the banana, peanut butter and egg, until well combined. Add the wet ingredients to the dry, gradually adding in the garbanzo bean flour. Transfer the mixture to heavily floured wax paper. This dough is very sticky, so be sure to flour cookie cutters, rolling pin, etc., well. Move the cut outs to a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown. Allow cooling before four legged taste testing. Store in airtight container. Yields about 2 dozen.

Helping support the Worcester County Animal Control

My pet throws up frequently. Is this is normal? by John Maniatty V.M.D.

T

his is a common statement I hear from clients. It is never “normal for a pet to vomit weekly or more often. The chronicity of this can lead to the stomach acid damaging the lining of the esophagus, which can further lead to ulcers and even cancer. When frequent vomiting occurs we need to try to determine the cause and treat. The first step to determine the cause is a good diet history. Questions that need to be answered are: What are you feeding and how long have they been on this diet? How often do you feed them? Do they eat all in one sitting or graze? What is the portion size? Is there any history of dietary indiscretion? What they are eating is important to help us get an ingredient list to review for possible food allergies. How long they have been on that diet helps us know if a change in the diet led to the vomiting or if chronic exposure has led to an allergy. Many pets, fed the same diet for months to years, become accustomed to digesting a certain diet. Changes from this staple can throw the body off and lead to vomiting. This is similar to a person dieting for a period of time, and then going off the 30

Delmarva Unleashed Holiday 2015

diet and feeling nauseous because their body is not used to the richer foods. How frequently the dog is fed is good information, because if they are fed their entire daily ration in one sitting, and devour that right away, they may over eat and vomit it right back up. This can be simply remedied by breaking their meals into smaller portions and feeding more frequently, or purchasing a bowl made to slow the rate at which they eat. These bowls (often called slow feeders) will either have a ridge or a raised area, reducing the ability to gobble the food. You can also put a tennis ball or heavy link chain in the bowl so they have to move it around to eat, slowing them down. Dietary indiscretion covers things such as plants, garbage, socks, toys, sticks, and rocks. The former materials can irritate the gastrointestinal (GI) tract while the latter can obstruct the GI tract. Irritation of the GI tract can be mechanical; i.e. scraping with bones, sticks, rocks, and metal; or chemical; i.e. cleaners, certain toxic plants, salt, and fertilizer. With the mechanical, sometimes the material will sit in the stomach and periodi

cally get lodged in the pylorus, the portion of the stomach that connects to the small intestine, and then gets dislodged when vomiting occurs. This can cause off and on vomiting with varying times in between episodes. We had a case of a dog eating tall grass roots. The grass and dirt created a ball in the stomach. The dog vomited off and on for 4 months before radiographs revealed the obstructive material. Once ruling out dietary problems, the next step is blood work and possible radiographs. Blood work can give us information about the liver and kidneys. Disease of these organs can lead to nausea and vomiting. There is a disease process called Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex that can lead to irritating plaque on the walls of the intestines. This can show up in blood work as elevated eosinophils. Elevated eosinophils also can be indicative of intestinal parasites that burrow into the wall of the GI tract. In large numbers this can cause vomiting or diarrhea. Blood work is limited and often does not show cancers and/or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Radiographs with or without a contrast agent may show narrowing or obstruction of the GI tract. If blood

work and radiographs help narrow down the possible cause, but due not give a definitive answer, then we can refer to a specialist for ultrasound or biopsy. Ultrasound can help look at wall thickness of the bowel and help see if a mass is present. Biopsy can be done with an endoscope or surgically performed. Surgery can be done laproscopicallly through three small incisions or exploratory with a full abdominal opening. If a referral and further work up is not financially feasible or unwanted, then we can try dietary and medical management. There are several prescription diets that can be used to start. If they are successful in helping curb or stop the vomiting medicine is not needed. If needed, then medicines such as metronidazole, sulfasalazine, tylan powder, probiotic, and steroids can be used and over time trying to wean down to the lowest effective dose. Also deworming prophylactically can be an easy treatment that can yield good results. Chronic vomiting is not normal and can be a sign of a larger problem. Taking the systematic approach to determine the cause and treating can improve the quality and length of your pet’s life.

Dear Santa Paws, I have been a really good boy this year. I hope that means you will bring me some presents! I apologize in advance if there are no cookies and milk when you arrive, Mommy and Daddy insist on leaving them out and sometimes it’s hard for me to not snack while I wait for you. I do hope you will let me know what time to expect you, I don’t want to wake my humans when you arrive; I get a little excited when visitors show up. I do love treats. All kinds of treats! Soft treats, cookies, and even big bones. I would like a couple human goodies like socks and blankets. For some reason they are always taking the socks away from me. Oh yeah, how about an automatic belly rubber or ball launcher. Do you think you could make one of those? I love belly rubs. Did I mention treats? I will be waiting Santa, I’m so excited! I can hear those jingle bells already! 34
