Itchy Dog?
Benadryl can be helpful for dogs with seasonal allergies. The standard canine dose is 1/2-1mg per pound of body weight. Of course it’s best to check with your vet to be sure it’s the right choice for your dog and that you are dealing with allergies and not another issue. Be sure not to purchase a mixed antihistamine, this can cause serious health problems for your dog. Stick with the brand name here for safety.
Natural Diarrhea Option Canned pumpkin is great to keep on hand in the event diarrhea strikes. Be sure to use 100% pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling. Adult dogs can have 2-3 teaspoons every 8-12 hours. If things don’t resolve in 24-36 hours it’s a good idea to chat with your vet’s office.

Holistic Flea & Tick Spray Reprinted by request... Looking for an alternative to “spot-on” treatments? Try this holistic preparation. Be sure to spray your dog daily for best results. 2 lemons sliced 1/2 cup of dried Lavender (We found a great selection of modestly priced lavender on Amazon.) 2 cups boiling water Combine all ingredients and let steep for at least 8 hours before use. Strain through a paper towel or cheese cloth and transfer to a spray bottle. Keep refrigerated. So you don’t forget, consider spraying your dog at his morning meal.
Homemade Holistic Shampoo As the weather warms there will be lots of baths in your dogs future. Spring tends to be “mud-season” here on the shore and while there are now numerous holistic and all natural shampoos on the market, this is an easy recipe you can make at home. Be sure to purchase quality oils and never apply them directly to your dog. Essential oils can be very strong and even one drop can be an irritant to the skin. Avoid contact with the eyes too. Make your initial batch in a glass jar and once the mixture is complete you can transfer it to a plastic bottle, particularly if you want to take it outside.
12 ounces of bottled water 1 tsp. of shredded Castile’s soap 2 drops each of the follow essential oils: Lavender Oil Peppermint Oil Eucalyptus Oil Rosemary Oil Shake your bottle well before each use. Lather your dog with a generous amount and be sure to rinse with lots of clear water. Delmarva Unleashed

Lupoid Dermatosis
by Sandy Phillips
E
xfoliative cutaneous lupus erythematosus (ECLE), also known as lupoid dermatosis, has only been reported in one breed of dog, the German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP). The disease is believed to be of a familial predisposition and is considered a genetic disorder. The dog often shows signs of the illness before their third birthday, with some exhibiting early signs at just a few months of age. In a typical litter of GSP pups whose parents carry the positive gene for ECLE, 25% of the puppies will be positive and develop the disease. The rest of the litter will be carriers with the ability to passalong the defective gene to the next generation. While there does not appear to be a sex predilection, females tend to be more severely affected, according to the AKC. They often have more scaling and crusting of the skin. Outbreaks often begin on the 8

face, ears and back and can progress to more generalized body coverage. Alopecia or hair loss is part of the disease. Skin eruptions are of large concern and can become infected if not promptly treated. The lymph system becomes involved, and swollen nodes are normal during a flair. Diagnosis is comprised from a variety of tests, including skin scrapings, bacterial and fungal cultures, blood chemistries and urinalysis. Kerstyn Parent, a GSP owner in Michigan, tells Delmarva Unleashed that she noticed some flaking skin on her new pup Pongo, at just a few months of age. "At first, I just thought it was from roughhousing with his sibling, another dog we brought into our family from the same litter. Then I noticed the flaking was occurring all over his body and by five months his entire body was affected."
Being the dedicated "dog Mom," Kerstyn began with a trip to the vet and extensive research into what was going on with Pongo. The flaking lead to sores and lots of them. "They would scab and crust over, and while the typical treatment of antibiotics and steroids worked, I didn't want him to be on them long term. My research lead me do try more holistic alternatives, allowing Pongo to lead a much more normal life with a minimal amount of drugs." Once diagnosed with this disease, most veterinary professionals suggest euthanasia because of a poor outlook on quality of life. But, Kerstyn wanted no part of that, her puppy was so full of life that she had to come up with a plan. Kerstyn's research road lead her to Maggie Casel, V.M.D at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Casel had been conducting research on ECLE and Kerstyn had her local vet draw blood and send samples to Dr. Casel. They spent many hours talking about some of the treatments Kerstyn had explored, both success's and failures and Dr. Casel was energized to share some of those holistic treatments with other dogs in the research program. Now almost 8 years later, some of Kerstyn's trial and error treatments are part of a treatment plan helping dogs with ECLE lead better lives. "I've learned so many little tricks to help Pongo; his skin is much healthier when we keep him out of full sun and protect the skin in general. He has a wardrobe and wearing it allows him to be a more regular dog. I use lots of oils on his skin, and the clothing helps keep them on the skin, as well as offering protection from things Delmarva Unleashed

that would trigger a Lupus episode. We take him camping; he loves the outdoors, and he gets to do most of the things any typical dog does. We know he can't spend time in the sun, and we have taught him what shade is, and he responds to a command to find shade and stay in it. Ball playing at our house occurs after 6:00pm and for us, now nine year's later, it's just perfectly normal to go out and plan ball after dinner." Kerstyn is so very passionate about spreading the word about ECLE and her success with Pongo. She began a Facebook page a few years ago to raise awareness about the disease. Her reach has been far and wide, and she has been able to play a part in the new mandatory testing in New Zealand for all GSP's there. Each dog must be tested for the genetic disorder before breeding to help stop the spread of the problem. She often gives talks at GSP clubs and speaks of responsible breeding and holistic treatments for dogs afflicted with the disease. "I want people to have a starting point and to know that there is an alternative to euthanasia; that the disease can be treated holistically and managed with a minimal amount of drugs. I'm a big fan of journal keeping for these dogs. 10

It allows you to identify triggers and patterns that can offer insight into better treatments for your individual dog. Every dog with the disease has a "tell," some little identifier that an episode is about to begin. Knowing that tell and being proactive can reduce the amount of a skin outbreaks and the length of the episode. It's all about management." If you would like to learn more about ECLE, we would also caution you, that much of the information online looks bleak, as people talk about relapses and many unsuccessful attempts to battle the disease. Like all of your online experiences, it's all about finding reliable resources. The University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School and Penn. Gen, a genetics testing facility at the University, offers excellent resources. You can also reach Kerstyn via Pongo's Facebook page - Pongo German Shorthair Pointer Lupus. There you can find reliable resources and lots of great photos of Pongo enjoying life. Kerstyn's continued success over the last 8 years speaks volumes to her knowledge of the disease and the fact that Pongo lives mostly a normal life even more. For many dogs, nail trimming is a multi-person job. Grooming professionals often offer “walkin” nail trimming for your convenience, and they have all kinds of tricks to make trimming a simple experience for your dog. Paw licking can be referred to as a “self-propagating cycle.” If your dog licks his paws because of an allergy or irritation, and that licking causes further irritation, which causes more licking...can lead to infected paws. While it’s best to determine the source of the irritation, it can often be a difficult task. While you work on the issue, it’s important to protect the paws from further damage. Children’s socks are often an excellent idea and if your dog is a whiz at removing them, adding a layer of vet-wrap (available at your pet store) will often create too much of a challenge for your dog to remove them. Socks also offer the opportunity to apply an oil or paw balm to the pads to help ease any irritation and aid in healing. The socks will help keep your dog from slipping and allow the dogs body heat to facilitate absorption. If you still cannot keep your dog from licking their paws, an e-collar is another option. Remember

infected paws will require a trip to your vet. There are other sources of paw irritation including, walking on hot pavement or being exposed to salt or chemical deicers. These irritants can cause your dog’s paws to become raw, chapped, and cracked. If your dog is exposed to these or similar irritants, you will want to wash and dry their paws when they return to the house or use a paw wax to offer a layer of protection for the pads. While you may opt for pet-friendly deicers, never assume that your neighbor does. Paw waxes also wear off depending on the length of your walk and can track dirt back into the house, so we recommend paw washing over-all. Some dogs suffer from seasonal allergies, and all the paw washing and balms in the world won’t stop the paw licking. In these cases, your veterinarian can help you sort out the best options for your dog. It’s most likely you wear shoes when walking your dog, which may mean you are not mindful of the terrain. Hot pavement can burn your dog’s paws, if you can’t walk on it barefoot neither can they. 16
Delmarva Unleashed
Spring 2016
Sharp rocks, sea shells, bush spurs, or broken glass are all hazards to your dogs paws. Beware of what they are walking on and if you’re often on rocky terrain, consider boots for your dog. While you may think they look silly, they are a functional tool to protect paws, particularly if your dog is your hiking partner. Quality boots are not a frivolous purchase, and they are also not cheap. However, they are very cost effective compared to an injury. Boots often work well for small dogs that are quickly chilled by cold pavements, allowing your walks to last longer in the winter months. After, and periodically during long walks, check your dog’s paws for potential irritants or foreign objects. Handle your dogs paws often, particularly during puppy-hood. If they are comfortable with the concept, nail care and addressing any paw issues that may arise, will be much easier.

Protect Your Dog From Paying The Price
S
pring is coming with its beautiful weather, a great time to get out and play ball with the dogs, fix up the yard that the winter destroyed, or go out on your boat. So much fun, but unfortunately so much stiffness and pain too my body is not ready for the sudden burst of activity. I see this too frequently with my patients also. After being pent up all winter, our dogs are looking to get out and stretch all four legs. We need to protect them from themselves, as we sometimes need someone to reign us in too. If not then they are in the same boat as I am sometimes. So how can we help them? Here are some simple ways to help ease them in and help if they over do it. 18
Delmarva Unleashed
Spring 2016
First is leash walk initially to control and warm up the muscles. If we just go out and run without loosening up, we have a greater chance of straining tendons, ligaments or muscles. Walk slowly at a gradually increasing pace over 5-10 minutes. Then with activity limit it based on its intensity. You may be able to go for a nice paced walk for 1 hour versus jogging 30 minutes versus throwing the ball for 15 minutes. Over doing things will lead to exhaustion, and the body will break down. If they do over do and are paying the price, some simple things you can do are massage the legs, cold compress the sore area, give a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID), and
limit activity. Massage will help relax the muscles and relieve tension. If you can isolate a single sore area, a cold compress for 10-15 minutes can be applied to help decrease inflammation. A cold compress can be a bag of frozen peas or you can make a homemade ice pack and either will mold nicely to the leg. To make a homemade ice pack take a zip-lock freezer bag put 1 part isopropyl rubbing alcohol to 3 parts water, i.e. ½ cup alcohol to 1 ½ cups water. Take this bag and place it inside another bag to protect from leaking and place both bags in the freezer for 1 hour. The mixture won’ t freeze and can be re-chilled and used as needed. NSAIDs work by limiting the inflammatory process in the joint or the muscle and bring relief in a matter of hours. Some work 12 hours other work 24 hours. NSAID’s should not be taken when on a steroid because the combination can damage the liver and the stomach. Certain NSAID’s are not safe to use in dogs. Ibuprofen; trade names Advil, Motrin, Nuprin; and naproxen; trade names Naprosyn, Anaprox, Aleve; are two examples. NSAID’s in dogs should never be mixed, unlike us who can take Tylenol in the morning an aspirin at lunch and ibuprofen at night. In dogs, the liver processes them differently, and it takes a certain amount of time to leave the system, we call this a wash-out period. The majority takes only four days, but aspirin takes seven days. Before giving any NSAID contact your veterinarian to get the correct dose. If using NSAIDs repetitively, it is recommended to have blood work done periodically to check liver and

K-9 Diesel, a Dog With An Explosive Personality by Sandy Phillips
A
few months ago an email came across my desk that mentioned that Delaware’s Department of National Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) was getting a new explosives dog. I have to admit that I wondered why they would need a bomb dog. So I picked up the phone and asked if we would be permitted an interview. The "why" was quickly answered during a visit with Officer Tyler Austin and his new explosives detection dog, Diesel. Like many agencies, DNREC has evolved to meet the demands of the modern world. While many of us would typically think of DNREC as comprised of Park Rangers and Game Wardens (Fish & Wildlife), there is also an Environmental Crimes Unit. 22
Delmarva Unleashed
Spring 2016
Of course, this group deals with illegal hazardous waste storage, toxic spills, illegal trash dumping, unpermitted open burning, etc. However, in today's world, they also face potential terroristic threats that may include explosives. In the past and to date, DNREC has had single-purpose canines, often Labradors that are trained for a specific purpose, such as serving the Division of Fish & Wildlife in tracking lost or missing people or finding hunters who had gone over the daily possession limit with their take of game. Diesel is the exception to the rule and carries dual credentials of both K-9 (a fully-trained police dog) and explosives detection dog. "The benefit of a dual-purpose dog allows us to work with a variety of agencies,"

says Officer Austin. “If another arm of law enforcement in Delaware requires the services of a bomb detection dog, I have the dog for the job." Officer Austin and Diesel were put to task right away with the number of bomb threats that occurred throughout the state early this year. "It was both an unfortunate and fortunate opportunity." Austin tells Delmarva Unleashed. “While I didn't like the threat to our schools, it was excellent real-life experience for Diesel. I was impressed by how focused he is on the job, and it allowed me to see everything we had been working on come together." Diesel was a dog born to be a K-9 – he was bred in Slovakia by a breeder who specializes in K-9's and, purposely, dogs of an alpha nature. He is part German Shepherd and part Belgian Malinois. Diesel completed preliminary K-9 training in the Carolinas before traveling to Delaware where his skills were evaluated for a fit for DNREC’s Environmental Crimes Unit and explosives detection. He was selected from a group of 11 candi-

dates for the position. Because he was to serve as a dual purpose dog and because law enforcement throughout the state works so close in-hand, Diesel's next round of training occurred locally at the Delaware State Police K-9 Training Facility in Dover. There he and Officer Austin completed two, 3-month sessions: three months for K-9 training and another three months for explosives detection. Of course, both Diesel and Officer Austin are required to take continuing training each month, as dictated by the Federal Government. Each month includes another 16 hours’ training in total; eight hours for K-9 enrichment and eight for explosives detection. "It's all about keeping their skills sharp, and Diesel works very hard,” Officer Austin says. “He loves the workouts and just seems to have fun. He's a high-energy dog and is happiest when he's working." Diesel's work day is as unpredictable as any officer's. Not only does he deal with "shift-work," his day may find him assisting on an unscheduled visit (i.e., raid) to an unscrupulous

manufacturer dumping toxic waste while tomorrow he may perform a site scan at Dover International Speedway before you NASCAR fans settle in to watch the race. His role in community events and safety is a large one and often most of his work goes on behind the scenes. Delmarva Unleashed visited Diesel on the training course at the barracks, and his expert skill level is very evident. A very powerful dog up for any challenge. You can also clearly tell there is a happy dog inside his K-9

“uniform,” as his greeting with me was both professional and exuberant, and I was permitted to give him a few pets. At the end of the day, K-9 Diesel goes home with Officer Austin and is a part of his family, all tucked in for a good night’s sleep before his next tour of duty for DNREC’s Office of Community Services - Environmental Crimes Unit.

ore dogs today are traveling with their humans than ever documented before, and the travel industry is taking notice, as more hotels are offering pet rooms and airlines are providing safer options for pets on the go. For dogs who are not seasoned travelers, airports, and long car rides can be stressful. It is important to make efforts to minimize stress and confusion as well as to take safety precautions to make the trip a smooth, happy and safe one. Often, the most comfortable way to travel with a dog is by car. This form of transportation provides the best opportunity to tend effectively to their needs, affording potty breaks on demand and walks for a restless canine. However, not all dogs enjoy riding in vehicles. While some dogs jump at the opportunity for a car ride, others detest it. If your dog, is the later, you will want to begin a training regimen for a more pleasant trip for everyone. Start with time just to explore the parked vehicle both inside and out. Then advance to short trips around the block. Creature comforts, like blankets and toys, will help to make the environment more familiar, just as it would with a child. Provide snacks that are only available on car rides, making them extra special. The goal is to have your dog look forward to the car ride. Work towards a goal of longer rides
that include potty breaks and or short walks before you leave for vacation. There is a percentage of dogs that simply don’t do well in moving vehicles. According to PetMD, young dogs whose ear structures are not fully developed may have some balance problems and motion will facilitate nausea. Many of these dogs will outgrow motion sickness when fully developed. However, there is no guarantee as there can be other contributing factors such as the stress of travel itself. If your dog only rides in the car to the vet, he will always assume that is what awaits him when the car stops. There are a lot of merits in a “joy” ride! Since dogs don’t turn green before vomiting begins, look for signs of restlessness, excessive drooling, and whining that may indicate motion sickness is taking hold. It is said that your dog will experience fewer symptoms when facing forward during the ride, and some people will say, do even better in a front seat, much like a human. However, airbags pose a more serious threat to a dog during an accident so a better option would be a canine seatbelt that attaches to the back seat and helps keep the dog facing forward. Dog owners that create feel traveling with the create offers the best option and will contain any vomit that may occur during the trip. Other tips for dogs battling motion sickness are to crack the windows just a bit. This helps balance the inside and outside pressure for your dog and may help ease uncomfortable feelings. Be sure the car temperature is on the cooler side as heat will only exaggerate symptoms. It is often said that withholding food before a trip will ease

Dangerous? According to Kurgo Travel Statistics, 12% of dog’s ride with their head out of the car window. Doing so puts your dog at risk for serious eye injury. And, because many will keep their mouths open while enjoying the air, they are at risk of swallowing something that really is just forced down their throats at 50 miles an hour. Bugs at the very least. Think about this, even motorcyclist drive at the minimum with sunglasses. They also know not to ride down the road with their mouths wide open. Not all dogs figure that out! If your dog just has to ride with it’s head out of the window, purchase a quality pair of goggles for him. Canine goggles are made to fit a dogs head and many now offer a level of UV protection for them as well. Dogs seem to adjust quickly to wearing them and they are now available in a variety of sizes and colors to suit your dogs individual style. There is also a fall risk, as in out of the window, should your car come to a sudden stop! 30

symptoms, but for a percentage of dogs having a light meal will stave off motion sickness. Again taking the time to acclimate your dog to car travel will help you determine which route is best to take for your dog should motion sickness pose a problem. If your dog will be traveling via air or train be sure they are comfortable inside a create or an airline approved pet carrier. (Each airline has specifics, and some are more canine friendly than others. For more information on the many airlines reference Delmarva Unleashed Holiday 2014, Traveling with Your FurKids, and your airline’s website for the most current details.) It’s imperative that the carrier is suited to your individual dog; offering adequate room to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably. You will also want to be sure it’s well ventilated for both overall physical and mental health. Start by leaving the carrier out in the dogs regular environment and with the door open, so the dog can come and go as it pleases. Be sure it’s inviting on the inside with a familiar blanket, create pad or toys. Progress to short times inside the carrier with the door closed and increase to larger intervals that would equate the air travel time. Begin your canine preparedness for your travel plans as soon as possible so that the travel experience is simply second nature for your dog. Your dog will arrive at his destination eager to dig into the vacation, just like the rest of the family!

from pg. 19 Weekend Warrior kidney functions. If planning a day of heavy activity pre-treat to limit the post consequences, especially in our senior pets with known arthritis. After overdoing it, limiting activity for several days will allow the joints and muscles to heal. Leash walks for those that might start to feel better, especially after an NSAID, so they do not re-aggravate the injury. Limit steps when possible. If you are doing laundry or bringing groceries, isolate them in a room, so they do not follow you back and forth. For Labrador Retrievers and other swimming breeds, they can get “Lab Tail” from excessive swimming. Dogs use their tail as a rudder when swimming and if they have not done this for a while the muscle fatigue and can get quite sore. They will not lift or wag their tail, and it can be painful when we move it for them. Rest, no swimming for 3- 5 days and an NSAID’s are the treatment of choice. It is a great time to get out and have some fun. But take it easy and gradually get back into activity. Don’t let you or your dog be the one laid up for the week.

Canine Favorite Delmarva Unleashed is often asked for referrals. Which groomer? Which kennel? Can you recommend a vet? Which dog food should I feed? Where can we take the dogs to eat? It’s time to see who our readers would refer their friends and family to. Because the shore is so large, we are going to break this down by county and there will also be a few over-all categories as well. Voting will occur on our website and we will also have a ballot in the Fall issue for our readers that prefer snail mail. Winners will be announced in the Holiday issue, just in time for your holiday, shopping, holiday grooming, holiday travel etc... Winners will receive a decal for the door of their business indicating they are a Delmarva Unleashed readers favorite!

until she split from that practice in December 2012. Since then she has been offering house call services while planning for the Animal Wellness Center. She graduated from the Healing Oasis Wellness Center’s Veterinary Spinal Manipulative Therapy Certification program in 2008, completed the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society’s 2012/2013 Certification program for veterinary acupuncture and is in the process of completing the University of Tennessee’s Canine Rehabilitation Certificate Program. While the Animal Wellness Center will contain state of the art technology for animal rehabilitation and pain
management, it will not include a radiology or surgery suite and will not offer hospitalization or emergency services. Dr. Wolinski has been referring to the general practice in our area for these services during the past three years of house calls and plans to continue the good working relationships and mutual respect they have enjoyed during that time. “Our hope is to be your go-to referral facility for all things rehab,” says Dr. Wolinski. “If you would like more information or a demonstration of a certain therapy or if you have questions about a particular case and wonder how we might be able to help, please don’t hesitate to call!”
Delmarva Unleashed would like to congratulate Dr. Wolinski, and her staff, on the opening of the Wellness facility. We were permitted a tour of the spa-like facility, with an opportunity to learn about the high-tech equipment and how these modalities can help our pets lead better lives. We are very confident many Eastern Shore dogs will benefit greatly from the technology, leaving the Wellness Center with a bit more spring in their step. Stay with us as Dr. Wolinski share’s more in-depth articles on the technology available at the Center in future issues of Delmarva Unleashed.
