Artists and creative seekers of all levels come from across the country to learn from renowned instructors, create art, and engage together in artistic inquiry. Here you will find a welcoming community that embraces the formative first stages, as well as acts of creative risk-taking and selfdiscovery; an immersive gathering place for exchanging ideas, inspirations, and techniques, allowing your ideas to germinate and the space and time you need to be artistically present. Nestled between the horizon line of Lake Superior and the wilderness of boreal forests and serene lakes, we invite you to

In planning our 2019 spring and summer offerings, it became evident that many of them draw upon the concept of the hybrid. In fact, the Art Colony itself is a bit of a hybrid: we do not do only one thing. We are part residential, hosting visiting artists for longer stays; we are part youth outreach, offering after school classes and a summer youth camp; we are part focused on working artists who are looking for mentoring options; and we are part community access, where you can take a class as a true beginner. We get that hybrids are naturally confusing. Is it a retriever or a poodle? Is it a tangerine or a grapefruit? The goodness of hybrids is that they can redefine expectations and invent new ways of understanding things. You will find at the Art Colony a space where you can mix things up and combine them in new ways for innovative results. We are a place where the synergy between different elements can be explored in order to arrive at new possibilities and ideas. There are several hybrid classes we are offering this summer, including hybrid forms in literary arts and mixing woodcut and drypoint printmaking together. The Water Cycle September residency will bring together four prodigious Minnesota artists of diverse media to explore our on-going water theme. And, at the same time that we like to mix things up, we also have some very purist approaches to the arts that allow you to focus on one specific medium and practice: Coptic bookbinding, wheel-thrown pottery, and beginning watercolor, to name a few. If you are new to the Art Colony, somehow you’ve found our catalog. Thanks for picking it up and for your curiosity to learn more. We look forward to seeing you walk through our doors. If you are an old friend, we trust you will find in these pages the same dedication to high-quality learning opportunities we’ve maintained throughout the years, and a sense that our hope remains, to craft creative opportunities for anyone who wants to join in.

Floating Ink: Member Appreciation Activity with Josie Lewis April 26 | 5 – 7 pm Join us this year for a special member appreciation event with artist and Grand Marais native, Josie Lewis. Josie will lead participants through a process of “painting” their own cards by dipping them into floating ink. See page for a fuller description of Josie’s background.

Learn what mokume-gane is all about, how to make different kinds of chains, new techniques for surface enrichment, and so much more. Along with classes, the event includes artist talks, a geological field trip, and a group trunk show. Findings is a biennial event hosted by the Grand Marais Art Colony in partnership with the Minnesota Jewelry Arts Guild. Classes and sessions are open to anyone with an interest in the jewelry arts and are geared toward all levels. Not interested in taking a class but love jewelry? Who doesn’t love the satisfying process of creating a unique, hand-made book? Try your hand at a variety of book arts projects and take a tour of a local bookbindery studio.

Over 75 local and regional artists showcase high-quality artwork. Observe artist demonstrations, participate in art activities, and celebrate the long tradition of the arts on the North Shore. FISHERMAN’S PICNIC WEEKEND August 1 – 4 a Community-wide Event One of the North Shore’s biggest celebrations with live music, fireworks, contests, food, crafts show, a parade, and kids’ activities in Grand Marais’ downtown district.

THE WATER CYCLE September 7 – 13 Evaporation, Condensation, Sublimation, Precipitation, Runoff, Infiltration: the water cycle gives us a tremendous vocabulary through which to learn about and be inspired by this natural resource. Four artists will be with us this September to explore the nature of water and how it inspires, informs, and challenges their work. Each artist will teach a half-day class during their time here and the week will culminate with a final panel discussion. During her residency, Corrie will make a life-sized sculpture of a wolf, complete with internal fabric organs, using textiles, ceramic, and metal. During the open studio, attendees will have the opportunity to observe as well as participate in Corrie’s studio process by helping her sew cloth organs out of repurposed fabric from the recycling center.

Stop in to see Dana’s residency work and learn more about her Town and Country series of paired and single landscape drawings.

CLAY: INFLUENCES AND FORMS Ellen Shankin May 17 | 7 pm | Location and Co-host: Cook County Higher Education Ellen Shankin has been a studio potter since 1977 and is a past recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship Grant. Her pottery explores line, balance, and tension. Join us for a delightful evening as Ellen shares her creative influences and inspirations. Drop-In Activity

Donna will discuss structure, fluidity, and stages of creating art — preparation, incubation, illumination, and implementation—in this conversation about the artist’s process.

ARTISTIC SYMBIOSIS Anna Johnson June 13 | 7 pm The drive to adorn is innate in our species, marking culture and defining value since the beginning of history. Contemporary jewelry, although it spans an unfathomable variety, participates in our modern day society, reflecting and emphasizing values as a civilization. Anna will discuss these ideas and how we as artists, jewelers, and makers engage through what we create. She will also share about her work and process, as well as talk about professional practice.

COLORED PENCIL Kristy Kutch June 26 | 4:30 pm Colored pencil is gaining prominence as a fine-art medium; it offers some remarkable techniques and tools. Kristy Kutch will demonstrate how to layer, blend, and create interesting textures painting with colored pencils. INSPIRATIONS THAT SPARK THE FLAME George Sawyer June 14 | 12 pm | Tuition: $15 includes catered lunch One of the most important—and sometimes most elusive— components for creating a new object or technique is the inspiration that kicks off the chain reaction of creativity. Goldsmith and designer George Sawyer offers a series of inspirations that have driven his work forward, and demonstrates how these inspirations turn into a completed object.

PAINTERS WHO USE COLOR AND LIGHT Kat Corrigan July 3 | 7 pm Location and Co-host: Cook County Higher Ed Kat Corrigan paints in a way that she describes as “pulling the light out from the darkness.” In this talk she will introduce you to some of her favorite and influential artists who do the same.

POP UPS AND KIRIGAMI Sharon Giesfeldt-van Ruiswyk July 13 | 10 – 11:30 am | Tuition: $15 for three cards Learn the basics of kirigami, the art of paper engineering that creates magical pop up cards. With nothing more than a piece of paper and a few simple cuts across a fold, you can create your own pop up greeting card. Make a few more and bind them together for a little pop up sample book. AQUARESIN Andy Ness July 13 | 1 – 3 pm | Tuition: $20 Andy will demonstrate how to use AquaResin, a non-toxic, sculpting resin, and students will create a small sculptural piece with the material. Mini- class

GOLDEN ACRYLICS AND MIXED MEDIA Bonnie Cutts July 14 | 10 am, 12 pm OR 2 pm | one-hour sessions | Tuition: $15 Spend an energetic hour working with Golden Acrylics materials, drawing tools, and collage papers creating a simplified mixed-media still life. Work on a prepared absorbent surface to draw your image with watercolor pencils, wash out the lines with water, and then define the forms with paint and cut or torn papers for collage. Artist Talk

ART AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE Shannon Brunette & Kathryn Savage July 26 | 7 pm | Location and Co-host: Cook County Higher Ed Shannon, founder and arts management consultant through the Office of Cultural Work, will share about her work at the intersection of art and social change. Kathryn will read recent hybrid work from a manuscript in progress that combines poetry with short essays.

MAKING POTS: A HOPEFUL AND TROUBLESOME EFFORT Linda Christianson August 14 | 7 pm Linda has said, “Having made pots now for about 40 years, I am surprised that it is still both a hopeful and troublesome effort to make a decent pot.” Join us for an opportunity to hear how Linda has sustained her interest and inspiration over the years and watch her demonstrate her techniques. Craft your own disguise as we celebrate Mardi Gras by making a colorful clay mask. Discover how masks have played a significant role in celebrations throughout the world; learn basic hand-building techniques to add attachments to soft clay slabs; apply textures using found objects & stamps; and paint with colorful underglazes. Templates will be provided and masks will be glazed, fired, and available for pick-up within two weeks.

MAKE AN UDU DRUM Karin Holen April 4 & 11 | 3:45 – 5:15 pm | Ages 9 – 12 | Tuition: $30 Explore the percussive elements of clay. Karin will explain the origin of the Udu drum, a clay, side-hole pot hand drum, and students will listen to Udu recordings as they use molds and hand-building techniques to make their own unique drum and base. Students will also add texture and decorations and projects will be ready for pick-up within two weeks. Please note that drums will be left unglazed for optimal sound quality.

NATURE’S PALETTE Samantha Martinez April 9 | 3:45 – 5:15 pm | Ages 9 – 12 | Tuition: $55 You are, of course, familiar with paint that comes from a tube. How about paint that comes from willow, walnuts, and berries? Samantha will teach students to use locally-sourced media that have been gathered directly from the landscape. Along with the added connection and satisfaction of gathering your own media, this process also helps to nurture a greater understanding and appreciation for local flora and other organisms. Using wood, flowers, berries, leaves, and beeswax, students will create basic tools to build a palette from nature and make one unique artwork from the materials.

Students will learn the foundations of wheel throwing from centering to throwing the basic cylinder and bowl forms. There will be ample time and materials for students to practice their skills so that by the final weeks they will be able to attach a handle to a mug and glaze their final pieces.

MY SKETCHBOOK: MAKING ART A PRACTICE John Franz, David Hahn April 8 – 29 | 4 Mondays | 3:45 – 4:45 pm Ages 6 – 8 | Tuition: $30 Sketching and doodling provide the basis for much creative exploration and are easy entry points for young artists. Students will fill their sketchbooks while learning the basics of drawing as David and John teach a variety of techniques, including perspective, negative space, and shading.

EARTH TURTLES Karin Holen April 22 | 9 – 11 am | Ages 6 – 8 | Tuition: $25 Create an earth turtle in honor of Earth Day! Use the four elements (Earth, Water, Wind, Fire) as inspiration for your clay turtle creations and discover turtle fun facts, as well as turtle symbolism in other cultures. Students will start with a pinch pot for the shell and add attachments for head, legs, and tail, then paint with colorful underglazes. Turtles will be glazed, fired, and ready for pick-up within two weeks.

CLAY SCULPTURE John Franz & David Hahn May 6 | 3:45 – 5:45 pm Ages 9 – 12 | Tuition: $20 Out of all the different materials a sculptor works with to create three-dimensional art, clay is the easiest to mold, make mistakes in, and fix. Students may choose to sculpt people, animals, or an abstract piece. Preliminary drawings will provide the basis for creations, and John and David will support students as they learn to transfer their drawings into air-drying clay.

LET’S MAKE SOME NOISE WITH CLAY Melissa Wickwire Learn to sculpt clay into a unique creation that makes noise! For ages 5 – 7 May 11 | 9 – 10:30 am | Tuition: $25 Students will create rattles using red terracotta clay. The pieces will be finished by the instructor with a red iron oxide wash, creating a beautiful matte surface design, and finished pieces will be available for pickup within two weeks.

HARDBOUND SKETCHBOOK Sharon Giesfeldt-van Ruiswyk August 16 | 9 – 11 am Ages 10 – 14 | Tuition: $25 Create a one-of-a-kind sketchbook or diary with an easy book binding technique and a cloth bound hard cover. Students will create their own book cloth and add a few extra embellishments to make each book a unique work of art. This class is part of the Book Arts Weekend. See page 32.

SUMMER ART SPACE Sharon Giesfeldt-van Ruiswyk Select Thursdays | June 6; July 4, 18, 25; August 15, 22 | 9 – 11 am Tuition: $10/session; $50/full series | Ages 8 – 12 Our summer art space program helps kids learn new ways to work with art materials, and explore their creativity. Melissa will demonstrate a variety of techniques, and students will create tiles of their own design or choose from a template. In the first session students will create the tiles from stoneware clay, and then return the second day to add the surface glaze of their choice. The finished work will be suitable for installation or as a wall hanging and available for pick-up within two weeks.

MAKE-A-BOWL FOR EMPTY BOWLS Karin Holen

May 14 – 18 Tuition: $625 | Supply fee: $45 | It has been Ellen’s passion to take the thrown pot beyond the wheel—out of round—while holding fast to the restrictions that usefulness imposes. Students will practice techniques associated with this type of exploration, including carving, cutting, additions, paddling, and more, all while exploring the choices a potter makes, often unconsciously, that radically affect the overall presence and resolution of the piece. Students will acquire a richer vocabulary of self-expression and, upon finishing, everyone will gain a deeper excitement about continued investigations of the altered pot. Prerequisite: Foundational clay and wheel-throwing experience.

Explore the colorful world of majolica glazes by painting your own tile. Joan will give an overview of these ancient glazes, including their origin and properties, and demonstrate majolica painting techniques. Each student will be able to pick out and paint two tiles with their own unique design. Tiles will be glaze-fired and available for pickup the following Sunday.

May 25 | 9 am, 11 am OR 1 pm 1.5 hour sessions | Tuition: $5 per session Participants will make one hand-built and one wheel-thrown bowl to be donated to the Empty Bowls Fundraiser, which works to alleviate hunger issues in Cook County. Guillermo will demonstrate a variety of wheel-thrown and utilitarian form techniques, and his use of simple tools, to encourage a conversation about the place of pots in our time. Focus on your individual skill building, curiosities, and aesthetic development during an intensive week of making. Shannon will offer a comprehensive introduction to the tools, techniques, and the creative possibilities of works on paper, using primarily gouache paint. Gouache is a popular water-based medium used in contemporary painting, illustration, and design. Like watercolor, gouache can be challenging to those new to the medium. Shannon will help students work through some of the more difficult aspects of painting with gouache as well as demonstrate techniques used when applying gouache to a variety of substrates.

Explore encaustic, or hot wax painting, using heated beeswax mixed with color pigments. Emphasis will be on technical information and creative image making. Jeff will teach layering, color mixing, transparent glazing, surface manipulations, and brushwork techniques. This is a handson experience filled with solid, foundational knowledge and techniques. Students will learn a brief history of encaustic painting and how to set up a basic encaustic studio. Each participant will receive feedback and guidance as they create pieces throughout the class. PLEIN AIR PAINTING THAT POPS Randy Hale July 29 – August 2 Tuition: $600 Plein air painting provides a unique and immediate connection with your subject. But it also presents an overwhelming amount of detail … a sensory overload! Recognizing and applying what is seen while dealing with the distractions of rapidly changing light and shadow can teach painters how to plan and work quickly. SUMINAGASHI Penny Ortmann & Nancy Haarmeyer May 4 or October 5 | 1 – 3 pm | Tuition: $20 Suminagashi, or “floating ink,” is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into a vibrant and colorful design. It originated in Japan as early as the 12th century. Create your own unique print and learn more about this art form.

Authors love to hide clues and red herrings in their stories. Book artists can, too. This class will focus on creating hidden compartments, secret messages, and pull out and pop up elements for your handmade books. INTRODUCTION TO KATAZOME: JAPANESE STENCIL DYING Kit Eastman June 28 – 30 Tuition: $285 | Supply fee: $28 Explore this centuries old Japanese textile art process that has elements of both printmaking and painting. Katazome uses non-toxic materials such as rice paste resist, soy milk, and natural pigments. Students will design and cut their own stencils and apply these patterns to fabric using rice paste resist. Then, Kit will provide instruction on how to paint designs using a rich selection of natural pigments. The group will also discuss alternatives to traditional materials and tools. Monoprinting is a versatile art medium, bringing together drawing, painting, and printmaking. Andy will guide students through the technical methods as well as tap into the creative options that monoprinting offers. Students will have the opportunity to work with the Art Colony’s professional printmaking equipment, and everyone will further develop their artistic voice along while making a small collection of prints.

Jeff will help students explore printmaking with an experimental approach and encourage intuitive thinking and play. Students will create imagery using the encaustic collagraph process, chine colle, and handwork while using the press as a drawing tool. The class begins with an investigation of encaustic collagraphs and builds on new techniques. Jeff will demonstrate multi-plate images and non-toxic, waterbased medium will be used along with various drawing media. BOOKBINDING STUDIO TOUR Scott Husby August 16 | 6 – 7:30 pm Tuition: $40 Scott Husby has been a conservation bookbinder since the 1970s, and has worked at the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, and the Smithsonian, and also served as the rare books conservator for Princeton University. Participants will have the chance to visit Scott’s hand bookbindery and learn about his more than 40-year career. Scott will showcase the tools, equipment, and materials used in making hand-bound books as well as an assortment of historical bookbinding models.

INTRODUCTION TO COPTIC BINDING Sue Bjerke August 17 | 8:30 – 5 pm Tuition: $95 | Supply fee: $20 Learn the classic Coptic stitch which dates back to the second century AD and is still used in parts of Egypt today. Students will learn the two-needle technique on their first book with wooden covers and, as time allows, the fourneedle technique on a second book which will also include boards covered with decorative papers. Adapting the technique of interlacing threads in carpet making, a chain or link stitch is used to bind the sections together. Students will keep the curved binding needles used in class for future projects.

Students will design and produce greeting cards based on botanical material collected from the local environment in and around Grand Marais. The first part of the class will be devoted to learning the basic design elements and techniques for cut paper art such as positive and negative space. In the second half of the class, each student will execute their own card design using x-acto knives and layered paper.

DRUM LEAF BINDING Jana Pullman August 17 | 8:30 am – 12:30 pm Tuition: $55 | Supply fee: $15 This innovative glued binding is an ideal way to turn your artwork into a book format. It requires no sewing so there is no thread to interfere with any image or text that crosses through the fold of the page. Each folded two-page spread can be a print, painting, or digital image that is glued to the back of the following page, producing a lightweight and flexible book for multiple purposes.

TUNNEL BOOKS Andrea Martin August 17 | 1:30 – 5:30 pm Tuition: $55 | Supply fee: $6 Take papercutting to the next level and advance your skills with tunnel books. Students will construct a tunnel or “peepshow” book which becomes a three-dimensional world. The book is made up of layers of pages or panels that are parallel to each other. The completed pages are attached to accordion folds by hinges, which allows the book to be folded up or opened up for viewing.

Boxes are both visually pleasing and functional containers. Students will learn basic box making techniques and variations on creating the lids for them. The first box will have a fitted lid, which can be taken off the box. The second box will have a hinged lid, which is attached to the box.

ACCORDION BOOKS Andrea Martin August 18 | 8:30 am – 5 pm Tuition: $95 | Supply fee: $6 Capture the beauty of the North Shore in an accordion book made with cut paper elements. Accordion books are one of the most versatile of the book forms and can be adapted for a number of projects such as incorporating pop-ups and fold-outs into the book structure. Starting with the basics, students will be introduced to folding and cutting methods. By the end of the class, students will have created a hardcover, cut paper accordion book.

TABLET PORTFOLIO Sue Bjerke August 18 | 8:30 am – 12:30 pm Tuition: $55 | Supply fee: $20 A tablet portfolio is handy for carrying to meetings and classes or keeping notes at home. It will hold a standard tablet and have a pocket for loose papers or cards. Students will make a 5 x 7-inch portfolio and receive an additional three tablets as part of the class, on which they will cover the headers to match the portfolio. The durable structure will be made of heavy book board covered with book cloth and Chiyogami paper.

Pamphlet binding is a simple way to sew a group of folded sheets with a cover material. The first book will have a long strip of paper for the cover, which wraps around the full book and makes a closure. For the second book Jana will teach a method of pamphlet sewing in which students attach regular book boards wrapped in decorative paper.

ARROW DESIGN SPINE Sue Bjerke August 18 | 1:30 – 5:30 pm | Tuition: $55 | Supply fee: $20 Students will make a three-section soft-cover book using heavy papers and a slipcase. This book binding creates a decorative sewing on the spine in an arrow design, along with a slip cover that is a variation of the soft-sided case. Once the case structure is learned it is readily adapted to any size book. Both the book and the slip case are suited for use as a journal, sketch book, or letterpress small editions and are a fine addition to your book making repertoire.

BRADEL BINDING Jana Pullman August 18 | 1:30 – 5:30 pm | Tuition: $55 | Supply fee: $15 Invented in the 19th century by French binder Alexis Bradel, bradel binding is also called bonnet or Bristol board binding and is a style of book binding with a hollow back. The binding is considered stronger than case binding and works well with small or large multi-signature books. Students will learn this binding technique through making a book and a cover. The cover itself will be constructed of a cloth spine and the face will be covered with marbled paper and book cloth.

Sculpture FAB-LAB INTENSIVE: INTRODUCTION TO WELDING STEEL SCULPTURES Greg Mueller July 25 – 28 Tuition: $300 | Supply fee: $40 Location and Co-host: Mueller Studio in Lutsen (formerly Last Chance Fabrication) FAB-LAB is an opportunity to synthesize introductory metal fabrication skills with the concept and challenge of constructing an exaggerated scale “insect sculpture.” Students will study the line and form qualities of an insect of their choosing and “scale up / re-interpret” its sculptural qualities while learning basic skills in welding and metal working using re-claimed scrap and new metals. Through image discussion, demonstrations, and hands on studio time, students will fabricate a welded sculpture.

FORGING A BLACK BEAR Judd Nelson August 10 – 11 Tuition: $190 | Supply fee: $50 Location and Co-host: Mueller Studio in Lutsen (formerly Last Chance Fabrication) Spend a beautiful weekend on the North Shore and create your own black bear sculpture. Students will gain basic knowledge of metalworking techniques as well as learn about wildlife sculpture and how to safely use a blacksmith forge, gas welders and cutting torches, electric wire feed welders, grinding wheels, and metal cut off saws. Pieces will be shaped and hammered using anvils and stand vises and finished with patinas and sealers.

METAL CASTING WITH RECYCLABLE MOLDS Wayne Potratz July 16 – 19 Tuition: $525 | Supply fee: $75 Location and Co-host: Mueller Studio in Lutsen (formerly Last Chance Fabrication) Explore making small cast bronze sculptures using ancient methods and learn to mold small wax patterns with clay and other natural materials following Indian, African, Meso-American, and Japanese techniques. The molds will be fired with charcoal and cast in bronze. Students can expect to make two or three small works and develop sculptural skills, including wax working, clay molding, melting metals, finishing, and patination of metals.

This workshop will help you build a marketing plan that aligns with your artistic intent. Through a series of exercises, students will examine how marketing can reflect the purpose behind their work. Lynn will outline the fundamentals of social media, websites, and other free or low-cost tools as outlets to engage with an audience and participants will develop steps toward a personalized marketing approach.

April 23 | 6 – 8:30 pm Tuition: $10 suggested donation Support your fellow artists by coming out to appreciate their work and participate in an artist-led critique session. The process allows artists to ask questions about their work in a non-judgmental setting through a facilitated dialogue between artists, peers, and audiences. Students who sign up will be part of the peer critique group and are not asked to bring in their own artwork to this training session. Call the Art Colony if you are interested in having your work critiqued for feedback.

RESIDENCIES AT THE ART COLONY The Art Colony provides artists with independent work space in professional studios amidst the backdrop of a stunning landscape. An environment of creative freedom supports the process and development of new works, allowing for a combination of aesthetic inquiry, creative risk-taking, experimentation, and artistic development.

JURIED ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE INVITED ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE Two concurrent juried residencies are available each year in March, one in the Founders Hall Multi-discipline Studio and one in the Eco-friendly Printmaking Studio.

Invited residencies are granted to artists who are mature in practice and who have experience with residencies who have worked on in-depth independent projects.

Registration Info For the most up-to-date information regarding all classes and events, and to register for those classes and events, visit the Art Colony website. Special circumstances may necessitate phone or in-person registration, such as with scholarship recipients, etc. Please read the information below before registering and call the Art Colony with questions. Register Early

Classes

CEUs and CECs

Class sizes are limited and registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Early registration also help reduce class cancellations due to low enrollment.

Before the start of class the Art Colony will email a confirmation letter and supply list. All classes are 9am – 4pm with a one-hour lunch break, unless otherwise noted. Please check-in at the Gallery Store before your class begins. Instructors can be contacted with questions through the Art Colony.

The Art Colony can provide certified educational credits to primary and secondary educators, therapists, and others looking to complete continuing education requirements.

Cancellation Policy If the Art Colony cancels a class, we will inform you at least five business days before the start date (unless otherwise noted) and refund your payment in full. The Art Colony assumes no responsibility for losses incurred due to lodging or travel arrangements (you may want to consider travel insurance).

Adult Cancellation Policy 30 or more days in advance of start date: 100% of payment refunded, less a $25 processing fee. 15 – 29 days in advance: half of tuition and half of supply fee are refunded.

Youth Cancellation Policy 5 or more days in advance of start date: 80% of full tuition refunded. 1 – 4 days in advance: 50% of full tuition refunded. Day of class: no

Independent Study Credits Art Colony classes qualify for college credit when approached as independent study projects in conjunction with a degree program. Interested students should consult with their academic counselors prior to enrolling.

Scholarships All Cook County youth, regardless of financial need, are eligible to receive a one-time $50 scholarship through the Eric Thomas Youth Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are also available for youth and adults on a financial sliding scale.

Ways to Get Involved VOLUNTEER Volunteers serve a key role in the life of the Art Colony. In a given week, volunteers care for our grounds, sort recycling, welcome visitors in our Gallery Store, provide needed administrative assistance, and help with classroom set-up as well as signature events. Come join us! WORK STUDY Work Study allows students with interests in supporting the arts, arts administration, events, and teaching, to consider taking on a more pivotal role within the Art Colony’s daily operations while earning class tuition credit. While work-study positions are open to anyone, we particularly encourage those who have financial need to consider this option.

EXHIBITIONS AND THE GALLERY STORE The Art Colony represents a number of artists through exhibitions and work showcased in our gallery store. Throughout our seventy-plus year history, the Grand Marais Art Colony has supported individuals in pursuing their artistic dreams and aspirations. Our hope is that everyone who comes to the Art Colony recognizes their ability to create and becomes an artist wherever they are in the world. Join us for a special evening event that celebrates you and all of the people who make the Grand Marais Art Colony’s work possible so that every artist can continue to explore their interests and hone their talents. The evening will include fine food and drinks, an Artful Auction, live music and the best view in Grand Marais. All proceeds will benefit the Art Colony.
