NEW BEGINNING

Cette saison 2017-2018 marquera un nouveau départ à tous égards, alors que Les Grands Ballets emménageront dans l’Édifice Wilder Espace Danse, au cœur du Quartier des spectacles, et que je ferai mes premiers pas à Montréal comme directeur artistique.

The 2017-2018 season will mark a new beginning in several ways: Les Grands Ballets will move into Édifice Wilder Espace Danse, in the heart of the Quartier des spectacles, and I will take my first steps as Artistic Director of the company in the beautiful city of Montreal.

Ce nouveau départ, vous le vivrez aussi grâce à une programmation empreinte de musique et de spiritualité, au plus près de ce que je suis, qui mettra en valeur de jeunes chorégraphes et des créations provenant du monde entier.

It will be a new beginning for you too, thanks to a program inspired by music and spirituality, a program that speaks to my heart and soul, and that puts the spotlight on young choreographers and new works from all around the world.

D’entrée de jeu, je vous inviterai à découvrir un programme double constitué de Stabat MATER, du chorégraphe roumain Edward Clug, et, en contrepoint de cette pièce songeuse et émouvante, la Symphonie no 7 de Beethoven, du chorégraphe allemand Uwe Scholz.

First off, I invite you to discover a double bill featuring Stabat MATER, from acclaimed Romanian choreographer Edward Clug, and then, as a counterpoint to this reflective, moving work, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, from German choreographer Uwe Scholz.

De la lumière étincelante de Beethoven, nous passerons à la chaleur du traditionnel Casse-Noisette, chorégraphié par Fernand Nault sur la musique de Tchaïkovski, avant d’accueillir le Eifman Ballet de Saint-Pétersbourg avec un double Requiem, celui de la grande poétesse Anna Akhmatova, sur la musique de Chostakovitch, et celui de Mozart, tous deux chorégraphiés par Boris Eifman.

From the bright light of Beethoven, we will move to the warmth of the traditional Nutcracker, choreographed by Fernand Nault and performed to Tchaïkovsky’s moving score, before welcoming the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, with its double bill, Requiem. The first opus is inspired by a piece from poetess Anna Akhmatova and performed to Shostakovich’s score, while the second is based on Mozart’s work. Both are choreographed by Boris Eifman.

Le cercle lumineux amorcé en symphonie se poursuivra avec un programme double chorégraphié sur deux des plus belles pièces de Stravinski. Nous présenterons ainsi L’Oiseau de feu, une commande confiée à la chorégraphe américaine Bridget Breiner, puis Le Sacre du printemps, premier mandat du chorégraphe français Étienne Béchard pour Les Grands Ballets. Le Ballet national d’Ukraine nous proposera ensuite Cendrillon, un merveilleux classique pour toute la famille, sur l’envoûtante musique de Prokofiev. Et, puisqu’un Italien ne pourrait manquer de vous offrir intrigues et passion dès sa première année, vous trouverez tout le suspense voulu dans la création Vendetta – Storie di Mafia, commandée à la chorégraphe belgo-colombienne Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Cette œuvre d’action promet gangsters, familles rivales et tous les rebondissements qui rendent inoubliable une soirée au ballet.

The circle of light which started with Symphony No. 7 will burn even brighter with yet another double bill presenting two of Stravinsky’s most moving pieces. First up is The Firebird, a commission from American choreographer Bridget Breiner, followed by The Rite of Spring, a first creation for Les Grands Ballets by French choreographer Étienne Béchard. The National Ballet of Ukraine will then present Cinderella, an enchanting classic for the whole family, set to Prokofiev’s dreamy score. How could an Italian fail to bring you intrigue and passion in his first season? You will find plenty of suspense in Belgian-Colombian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Vendetta – Storie di Mafia, a commission for Les Grands Ballets. This action-filled piece will bring you into the underworld of gangsters and feuding families, and come with all the exciting plot twists that make for a thrilling night at the ballet.

Enfin, pour clore cette saison en beauté, je vous offrirai une flûte de champagne à la Soirée des étoiles : Dance Me To The End Of Love, en hommage à cet immense Montréalais qu'était Leonard Cohen. Des danseurs étoiles de réputation mondiale rejoindront pour l’occasion Les Grands Ballets.

Finally, to close the season on a high note, I will offer you a glass of champagne at the Soirée des étoiles: Dance Me To The End Of Love, a tribute to Montreal’s legendary Leonard Cohen. World-renowned stars from the world of dance will join Les Grands Ballets to offer you a night to remember.

This inclusive, holistic vision, unique to Les Grands Ballets, has already been brought into play by the National Centre for Dance Therapy with its 23 activities and research projects in adapted dance, that have already enhanced the lives of approximately 350 people with disabilities. We’re also delighted to be launching our brand new courses in leisure and well-being in fall 2017, allowing you to experience everything that dance has to offer.

Les Grands Ballets vous ouvrent la porte non seulement d’un monde nouveau, mais aussi d’un nouvel univers pour vous faire vivre pleinement le sens profond de notre mission : susciter la découverte, stimuler l’imaginaire, transmettre la passion de la danse, en incarnant l’ouverture, la créativité et l’audace, dans une vision de société inspirée et généreuse. But innovating doesn’t end there! Beginning in June, you’ll be able to visit our brand new home featuring seven professional dance studios, a large creation studio, an atrium and the Grands Ballets café and restaurant. Although these new spaces will be the nerve centre of our dancers’ and artists’ day-to-day work, they will also be open and accessible to the arts and business communities as well as to each and every one of you. Les Grands Ballets is opening its doors not only to a new world, but to a whole new universe that exemplifies the true meaning of its mission: to inspire new discoveries, stimulate the imagination and convey a passion for dance, while embodying openness, creativity and audacity, all in keeping with a vision of society that is both inspired and generous. We are particularly pleased and proud to be ushering in this new world in conjunction with the celebrations surrounding the 375 th anniversary of Montreal and the 150th anniversary of Canada.

Le Centre national de danse-thérapie se déploie The National Centre for Dance Therapy Moves into High Gear

Créé en 2013, le Centre national de danse-thérapie (CNDT) s’inscrit dans la vision élargie des Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal de promouvoir les bienfaits de la danse pour améliorer le mieux-être de chacun. Cette saison, le CNDT déploiera son offre auprès du grand public au sein du nouvel Édifice Wilder Espace Danse. Poursuivant ses multiples projets cliniques et de recherche dans de grandes institutions, le Centre pourra désormais faire bénéficier à tous de sa gamme de services grandissante. Le Centre développera ainsi son offre en danse adaptée, notamment par le biais de cours de danse pour personnes ayant la trisomie, atteintes de la maladie de Parkinson ou avec un trouble du spectre de l’autisme.
