A2 | NEWS NEWS BRIEFS SYMPOSIUM TO ADDRESS OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

Grand Valley State University will host “Open GVSU Symposium” to discuss access to information for International Open Access Week Oct. 21-27. The symposium will discuss Open Educational Resources (OER), which are free, openly licensed materials.

The symposium will include round table discussions with speakers from GVSU, representing departments from University Libraries, Kirkhof College of Nursing, Seidman College of Business and others. Topics will cover privacy, ethics, sustainability and accessibility surrounding scholarly journals, with some speakers discussing a healthcare angle.

A fall semester survey found that out of 412 GVSU students, 78 percent skipped buying a textbook due to costs and 95 percent of students who didn’t buy a textbook were concerned about their grades in that course. The average cost of textbooks per semester at GVSU is $330.

The Open GVSU Symposium will be held Thursday, Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m. in the Mary Idema Pew Library Room 030.

GV STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

On Saturday, Oct. 12, more than 250 students from both GVSU and Grand Rapids Community College volunteered for Make a Difference Day. Sponsored by GVSU’s Community Service Learning Center, Make a Difference Day has been held for more than 20 years, allowing students to volunteer with the local community.

This year, students worked with the Children’s Advocacy Center, Kent County Parks and the Refugee Education Center, among others. Volunteers also cleaned Townsend Park in Rockford, prepared lunches at Kids Food Basket and gardened with Urban Roots, totaling 1,160 hours of community service.

Keynote speaker Sonya Hernandez, assistant director for the GRCC Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, began the day with her message, “The Power of Caring.”

SPEAKER, AUTHOR VISITS GV TO ADDRESS CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM

Judicial reform advocate, author and nonprofit founder Jennifer Thompson visited GVSU Wednesday, Oct. 16 to discuss criminal justice reform. After being attacked in 1984, Thompson identified her attacker and sent him to prison for life. Eleven years later, DNA testing proved him innocent.

She has since become an advocate for criminal justice reform. She co-authored the book “Picking Cotton: Our Memoir of Injustice and Redemption” and is the founder and board chair of Healing Justice, a nonprofit that works with those who were wrongfully convicted. Her work aims to help victims and fight for reform to avoid more wrongful convictions.

Water contamination in West Olive: What Consumers Energy and Sierra Club data tell us

Last month, a report released by the Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club detailed possible water contamination in four homes in the West Olive neighborhood.

The environmental organization attributed the contamination through a public press release to coal ash pollution leaching into the private wells near Consumers Energy’s J.H. Campbell Coal Plant.

However, data and testing from Consumers Energy’s reports appear to refute the Sierra Club’s claim assertion that the contamination was due to the plant’s coal ash ponds on its site.

The Sierra Club’s testing data was not released publicly along with its initial press release on the findings, and was made available to the Lanthorn after copies of the documents were requested. The Consumers Energy coal ash testing information has been available to the public through the company’s website, which provide testing results for the plant through their annual groundwater monitoring reports that go back a number of years.

The dangers of water contamination are known to many Michigan residents due to the Flint crisis, but this contamination appears to only be affecting private wells and is less likely to lead to major contamination spread. However, even lower levels of contamination can cause adverse health effects.

Heightened levels of chemicals like arsenic, barium and lead in the bloodstream and body can cause severe gastrointestinal reactions and can lead to higher chances of bone, liver and breast cancer. Lead contamination in the body can damage the central nervous system.

Locating and verifying the potential causes of contamination in water sources is an important part of informing and protecting public safety.

The areas tested by Sierra Club researchers were located on Croswell Shore Trail and Olive Shore Avenue north of the plant, as well as two homes on Lake Avenue Port Sheldon and Blair Street, south of the J.H. Campbell plant. These homes get their water from private wells. Sierra Club’s testing showed heightened levels of contaminants like lead, arsenic and radium in the water.

According to the Sierra Club, water samples taken from three homes near the plant in West Olive in July showed arsenic levels over two and a half times the normal levels for safe drinking water. Sierra Club tested four residential wells, in which three of those four wells showed levels of constituents identified by Sierra Club below drinking water standards.

Only one well contained levels of arsenic and lead above drinking water standards. Additionally, Sierra’s initial tests also showed high levels of barium and radium in three homes.

Yet according to additional testing done by Consumers Energy at the J.H. Campbell Plant through a third-party laboratory, groundwater results did not exceed drinking water standards for lead, barium or arsenic in wells directly adjacent to the landfills and ash ponds.

ing water supply wells on the site and found them all to be below drinking water standards for these same constituents.

Although isolated exceedances of arsenic have been noted on Consumers Energy’s property directly next to landfills or ash ponds, perimeter wells around the site confirm arsenic is not leaving the site at levels exceeding drinking water standards.

Campbell Plant. The locations of the other houses also showed that contamination from the J.H. Campbell Plant was unlikely due to their situation in relation to the plant and its coal ash pits.

“The well with the higher levels of arsenic is at the opposite end of the facility — it is very unlikely the arsenic is from Consumers in that scenario,” Rediske said. “The house on Blair Street is too far away on the other side of the river to be influenced by Consumers and that leaves only the house on Lake Avenue, and

there are three dots on the map, all on the opposite side of the river. Water would need to travel under the Pigeon River and Pigeon Lake to reach the house, which is remotely possible.”

Additionally, Consumers Energy says it has also made several changes to their coal ash ponds on their facility grounds in recent months, including closing or filling in some of the ponds completely. The ash management area is located east and across Lake Shore Drive from the generating plants. This area contains Consumers Energy’s closed ash ponds and landfills as well as the robust groundwater monitoring network.

Work has been completed to close all the ash ponds on the site, which have been replaced for daily operations with concrete tanks. The only ash disposal unit that is still being used at J.H. Campbell is the licensed landfill which contains an engineered double-liner system to prevent leeching potential contamination.

Director of media relations at Consumers Energy Katie Carey explained that Consumers Energy has always maintained a goal of keeping contaminants on all sites contained or safely disposed of. The Campbell plant has been operational for almost 60 years and has been certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council.

“All of our coal plants, including the J.H. Campbell plant, have historically been the backbone of our energy supply fueling Michigan’s homes and businesses,” Carey said. “However, with a changing world, our company is moving toward a renewable energy future in our company’s Clean Energy Plan. Under the Clean Energy Plan, our three remaining coal-fired plants at the Campbell Generating Complex would operate until the end of their design lives.”

Under this new initiative, Consumers Energy’s Campbell plants one and two would run until 2031, while Campbell three, equipped with state-of-the-art air quality control systems, would continue to serve customers until 2040.

GV hosts event for setting new largest periodic table record

On Saturday, Oct. 19, the Kelly Family Sports Center at Grand Valley State University saw people gather to see what could be the world’s largest periodic table. Volunteers across Michigan, the United States and the world contributed designs of elements.

Lead Laboratory Supervisor for the chemistry department Michelle DeWitt said as she saw an American Chemistry Society (ACS) magazine a few years ago, she read an article that covered the world’s largest periodic table, which she described as not that big. Therefore, she sought to pursue a new world’s largest periodic table.

DeWitt said the United Nations deemed 2019 to be the International Year of the Periodic Table, for this year is the 150th anniversary of the periodic table. Additionally, the ACS plans an event each October for National Chemistry Week. She mentioned the event combined both occasions, celebrating the periodic table and chemistry.

“Everything in the world is chemistry,” DeWitt said.

The periodic table consists of elements present in daily life, not just chemistry fields. DeWitt said elements are what people breathe, including oxygen, and also extend

to comprising food and the human body.

For those attending the event, DeWitt said she wanted them to have a positive experience with chemistry. She mentioned there are people who think about chemistry in negative terms. For instance, Chemistry Department Chair Deborah Herrington said those perceptions include seeing chemists as blowing something up or making drugs.

Herrington pointed to the show “Breaking Bad” as giving chemists a bad reputation.

vices, to reduce overall emissions and waste. In the past 15 years, the campus itself has grown by 63 percent, but the following utilities have reduced: electricity by 28.2 percent, natural gas by 34.3 percent, water by 43.8 percent and steam by 35.3 percent. While much of this success is thanks to the Sustainability Office, Director Yumiko Jakobcic said it also has a lot to do with collaboration across campus.

“It’s a lot to do with the energy conservation measures, and even some of the stuff that students are doing really plays into that,” Jakobcic said. “This month is the energy competition in Housing, and we can see, looking at our utility bills, that they drop in October when we do that. Really, it’s a collective effort with a lot of little things involving students and facilities.”

One of the ways students have gotten involved in sustainability efforts is through the Sustainable Reinvestment Fund, which is seed money to start sustainability projects.

Reduced fat Cheez-Its suck (mathematically, historically and objectively proven)

I know I’m supposed to be politically correct during the current year, but I can’t keep ignoring the fact that people who like reduced fat Cheez-Its are ruining our country. The Reducies are taking my good, old fashioned American shelf space, and filling it with their 120 calorie nonsense.

Have you tried a reduced fat CheezIt? Because I have. I bought a whole

box. They taste like how dog food smells, they’re more expensive than regular Cheez-Its and they weigh less.

They’re 11.5 ounces of lies.

Even Fooducate.com refers to this snack as “Worse than Average” with a C rating. Though this may be an offensive description for a C to many of you collegiate readers, I agree with it on the grounds that reduced fat Cheez-Its suck.

Have I ever heard of this website before writing this article? No. Have you?

Probably not. But at least now we both know that it is an extremely reputable source for food education.

You know what Cheez-Its are?

BAKED. Baked chips are already healthier than regular chips — that’s why you feel such a dietary pride in grabbing the slightly-less-yellow-and/ or-kind-of-light-brownish (scientifically speaking) Lay’s bag that screams “BAKED” instead of just using the regular flavor’s obnoxiously loud yellow color to call you into the chip aisle.

This is literal science! If baked Lay’s are healthier and have less fat

than normal Lay’s, and Cheez-Its are already a BAKED snack cracker, then making another version of Cheez-Its with 40 percent less fat is obviously just going to make it taste like dog feces after Fido eats an entire pack of American Singles (the Kraft cheese, not the dating pool in your area).

What we really need is a version of Cheez-Its with more fat, I’m talking at least an 80 percent increase. That’s the percentage lost from Original Lay’s to Oven Baked, people.

I’m no math major (and I will always have to sing Pop Goes the Weasel in order to recite the Quadratic Formula), but I’m pretty sure that I can logically conclude that if “Original Lays - 80 percent fat = Cheez-Its” is true, then “Cheez-Its - 40 percent fat = Fido + Kraft Singles.” I hope I’m making Professor Hogg proud with this bastardized version of Intro to Logic.

LGBTQ people not safe on social media, including Instagram

on Instagram was taken down as a result of it violating “community guidelines,” which sparked outcry in the LGBTQ community and condemnation (aimed at Instagram) from celebrities such as Olly Alexander and Jade Thirlwall. The action was labeled homophobic on the part of the social media company, even after they reversed the decision, calling it an “error.”

A somewhat similar episode was reported by Joe Putignano, a gay Cirque du Soleil acrobat, who wrote in an article on HuffPost that he suffered frequent homophobic cyber-bullying on his Instagram account, which at one point resulted in his profile getting deleted because of how often it would be falsely

reported by trolls (or perhaps one troll with multiple fake accounts).

Putignano’s account was reinstated after the article was published.

It’s unsurprising to see how Instagram has had a tumultuous relationship with the LGBTQ community in recent years. In 2017, the Daily Dot reported a leaked list of “banned” hashtags for the platform, which included #gay, #iamgay, #lesbian, #bi, among others. And with the rumored implementation of “shadow banning,” some claim the feature could be used to inconspicuously censor LGBTQ content further.

Some may argue that the problem comes from the homophobic people who abuse the platform, and not Instagram itself. This is partly true, as the issue of LGBTQ content being taken down typically comes from users intentionally wrongfully flagging it, resulting in it being taken down automatically. But it is because of this incompetent oversight over the reporting system that Instagram is complicit in this homophobia.

Without any assurance of specific protections against this known, particular kind of hateful attack, Instagram is just as in the wrong in this phenomenon as the trolls. While Instagram as a company has said they are in favor of the rights of LGBTQ people, the technology is clearly not.

Pledge of Allegiance: Yea or nay?

W

hile there are quite a few topics that are contentious in the Student Senate, the most recent of these hot debates has been the argument surrounding the Pledge of Allegiance.

The debate comes after Student Senate’s decision to omit the Pledge at the beginning of General Assembly meetings, and then its eventual reinstatement weeks later.

While the Pledge is included, it is not required for senators or attendees to stand, speak or participate in any way. Additionally, the football team has stopped standing on the field during the National Anthem at Lubbers Stadium, instead opting to stay in the locker room.

While both sides of the Pledge debate have solid points and strong arguments, we ultimately think it comes down to individual beliefs.

Since Grand Valley State University is a public university, federal funding supports our institution and education.

With this in mind, one

could argue that it’s important to say the Pledge and pay respect to support patriotic practices.

However, GVSU is also home to over 300 international students from over 100 countries. And while Christianity is the most commonly practiced religion on campus according to a 2015 survey, 9 percent of the campus has no religious affiliation.

Eight percent is Agnostic, 5 percent said they were spiritual with no religious affiliation and 9 percent chose not to specify on the survey. There are some religious minorities on campus as well, such as practicing Muslim, Hindu and Jewish students.

With a diverse range of religious ideologies, it is evident that GVSU is home to 25,000 students who do not all believe in the same, one god. A question that each person needs to ask themselves: Does the implementation of the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem create an environment of otherness on campus?

That’s for you to decide.

Ottawa County acquires Ottawa Sands

Ottawa County officials hosted a dedication ceremony celebrating their acquisition of the Ottawa Sands corridor on Oct. 15. The event marked the end of a yearlong effort to obtain the 345-acre property, connecting green space between Muskegon County to Grand Haven.

“The Ottawa Sands acquisition is the final piece of a puzzle,” said Land Conservancy Executive Director Joe Engel. “With a whole lot of work from a whole lot of people and a little risk, we acquired a property that will benefit everyone, not just people in Ottawa County. What an opportunity.”

What was once a sand-mining site now serves as a home for wildlife, including deer, hawks and a pair of bald eagles. The diverse landscape consists of 49 acres of dunes, wetlands, beech-maple forests and an 80-acre inland lake.

“Ottawa Sands offers a great chance to access nature, feel the wind and see natural beauty,” Engel said. “I hope that people come and become even more enthusiastic about protecting natural resources.”

Gaylen Byker, the previous owner of Ottawa Sands, approached Ottawa County about purchasing the property and donated 25 percent of the land value in 2017.

As a part of their investigation into the potential contamination, Sierra Club spoke with a handful of West Olive residents to see if any of them had noticed any adverse health effects as a result of their water supply. There were no reports of major health issues from residents, and residents who did report effects from their water supply only expressed heightened levels of the chemicals in the bloodstream following recent doctor’s visits.

After using a filter in their home or drinking other sources of water, most residents found that these levels reverted back to normal within a few weeks. Despite there being no reports of deadly health effects, residents are still eager to know where the contamination could have come from and what local authorities are doing to combat the contamination risks.

Senior public information director for Consumers Energy Roger Morgenstern said that the public’s safety is a top priority for officials at every Consumers Energy plant. Morgenstern expressed that the company is dedicated to making sure people are informed if there is ever any risk of contamination and that Consumers Energy shares Sierra Club’s mission of providing Grand Rapids area residents with a safe drinking water supply.

Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund (MNRTF) grant to obtain half of the funding needed for the $8.2 million purchase.

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan obtained a low-interest loan from the Conservation Fund and launched a $400,000 fundraising campaign in support of the acquisition. MNRTF recommended a second $3.84 million grant to pay off the Conservation Fund loan in December 2018. Ottawa County finalized mortgage payments and received the property in July 2019.

Ottawa County officials will conduct a feasibility study to determine if they should develop campsites and offer riverfront access. They encourage citizens to provide input throughout the master planning process.

Ottawa Sands is open for public use and includes a parking lot and three and a half miles of designated trails.

“People see value in this property,” Van Ginhoven said. “We’re excited to look at the possibilities for eco-tourism.”

The Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club has yet to come forward with additional testing results or information regarding the reports since publishing the initial press release or publish any official dates or locations for

the additional testing required. Sierra Club representatives expressed that plans to further investigate the source of contamination are in discussion, and that they hope to provide additional information once more testing has been conducted to provide the public with a comprehensive analysis in response to Consumers Energy’s data and testing results.

October 2019 marks Audiology Awareness Month as Grand Valley State University plans to implement an audiology doctorate in Fall 2020. Robert Page, a junior, plans to study audiology; his interest comes from personal experience with hearing loss.

“I’ve never really have any memories of acoustic hearing, which is what would be normal hearing,” Page said.

Dr. Dan Halling, director of the audiology doctorate, said hearing loss ranges from mild to complete. Page said he lost all his hearing to meningitis at 13 months old. Come 18 months old, he underwent surgery for a cochlear implant.

Halling said, “Cochlear implants have really kind of revolutionized what we’re able to do with somebody that formerly would have been considered deaf.”

The surgery involves inserting a device into someone’s skull. From there, an electrode array is guided to the cochlea where electrodes are fired to stimulate nerve fibers,

Halling said. In other words, electricity helps restore hearing, despite cochlea hair cells no longer working to generate sound.

Page described his hearing experience as like watching TV when someone turns on mute. Without cochlear implants, he cannot hear anything. He keeps the implant on most of the day, only taking it off when sleeping and swimming. An app even allows him to listen to music through his cochlear implants.

When first attending GVSU, Page said he started as a double major in accounting and finance. His choice of study was not entirely certain, so Page took a career class to explore other options beyond corporate work.

In WRT 150 for his general education requirement, he wrote three papers. One essay pertained to the history of cochlear implants while another covered Page’s life as a hard of hearing person. Page said he enjoyed those two papers more than his essay on economics, a foreshadowing of his shift to another career path.

Prior to college, Page attended Mason High School in the Lansing area. He recalled going with a teacher consultant to class-

es, and explaining his hearing loss and cochlear implants to students. In reflecting on high school, Page said he realized he enjoyed talking about his experiences.

“What I love about Grand Valley is that they give you a lot of hands-on experience,” Page said.

Page majors in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), and he said he likes his major’s focus on hands-on learning as it reinforces lessons learned from class. For instance, Page utilized an audiometer to create audiograms. This experience involved doing hearing tests with air conduction and bone conduction.

Another project saw him record a language sample for a communication development class. The recording came about when Page talked to a preschooler for about 30 minutes to an hour. He then transcribed and analyzed the language sample. Page said the project was similar to the work of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP).

Page’s experiences extend beyond CSD classes since he volunteers for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services in Kentwood, Michigan.

Even today, he said the people with hearing loss he usually encounters are adults in their forties through sixties. He said hearing loss at these ages is related to disease, age and noise. By contrast, his experience is different, having lost hearing during childhood.

Halling noted that in part because of this, a lot of students and young adults are not exposed to the study of hearing loss.

“We’re a small profession, and a lot of people have never even heard of audiology,” Halling said.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 13,600 audiologists were employed in 2018. Halling explained audiologists help individuals who have hearing impairments or concerns, and their work includes checking people for dizziness.

Halling explained planning for GVSU’s audiology doctorate began in 2011 when the College of Health Professions looked at expanding its programs. He also said creating an audiology program speaks well for the university, as audiology students will go on to serve across West Michigan and the United States.

hope to deliver audiology services for students and faculty who might be faced with hearing difficulties.

While doctoral programs specify the coursework students must complete before applying, Halling said the audiology doctorate is different. It is organized in a way to attract people from different areas of science, so students studying such fields as biomedical science can apply.

Halling described the audiology curriculum as rigorous. The doctorate is a three-year program where students will spend each semester working with patients. Audiology students should be compassionate toward patients and advocate for their needs, Halling said.

The satisfaction of audiology comes from improving the lives of people who struggle with communication, Halling explained. He described communication as a huge part of life and quality thereof.

Even Page mentioned it is important to be accessible to individuals with hearing problems because they really want to hear messages. In case people do not know sign language, he recommended repeating the message or typing it on a phone. The key is being patient and putting forth the effort for people with hearing difficulties.

GV JOINS WORLDWIDE CELEBRATION OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

Grand Valley State University is joining more than 160 universities worldwide in the annual celebration of Women Entrepreneurship Week. The commemoration of female innovators has come a long way from its small scale origins at Montclair State University in New Jersey in 2014. In only five years, hundreds of communities have joined Montclair in encouraging economic expansion through supporting and advocating for women in the workforce.

The Richard M. and Helen DeVos Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation is hosting a Women Entrepreneurship Week Celebration Luncheon in honor of this event on Thursday, Oct. 24. This year’s Homecoming line-up is taking Halloween to heart. The Campus Activities Board (CAB) has organized events varying from pumpkin decorating to a lip sync competition, all following this year’s theme: SpooktacuLAKER. “When we looked at the Homecoming schedule on the calendar and saw that it was the week before Halloween, it seemed like a Halloween theme would be not only entertaining, but a good way to get students engaged with both the holiday and Homecoming,” said CAB Homecoming Director Lillian Baker.

With midterms just behind and finals on the horizon, it is all the more essential for students to find time to relax, hang out with friends and experience a fun, stressfree environment through events right on Allendale’s campus. For students on a tight budget, on-campus events are the perfect way to not spend money while still being

able to meet new people and see unique performances of all kinds.

“Too often students are stressed with work, homework, student organizations and more,” Baker said. “Our Homecoming events will be a fun way to escape for a bit.”

Students encouraged to “Snack and Relax” with Student Affairs

Grand Valley State University’s Dean of Students Office is encouraging students to get connected to the Division of Student Affairs and the resources they offer. Their current focus is on creating new fun opportunities for students to enjoy, such as their upcoming fall event, “Snacks and Relax,” which offers free donuts and cider to anyone who comes by to learn more about what the office can offer.

“For us, it’s about helping students get the most out of their experience at Grand Valley, whether that’s personally, educationally and, of course, in their future careers,” said Liz Chase, Student Retention and Special Projects Coordinator.

Snacks and Relax is one of many events being put on by the Division of Student Affairs. It will take place Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center Lounge, and Thursday, Oct. 31 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the DeVos Center near Starbucks.

“This is the chance for students to come and snack on some donuts and apple cider and meet some of the staff from our division,” Chase said. “Anyone and everyone can come. My favorite part is meeting students and checking in with them on how their week is, seeing what some are their stressors are and maybe seeing what they

Recreation Wellness, service learning activities and the list goes on.

The Division of Student Affairs contains 10 departments, each of which reaches out to connect with GVSU students, not only to provide them with support and guidance, but the resources to be successful and have an enjoyable experience while on campus.

GV FOOTBALL INKS SERIES WITH COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO

Grand Valley State and Colorado StatePueblo announced jointly today a four-year football agreement that will begin with the 2020 season and run through 2023. The games will take place at Colorado StatePueblo’s Thunderbowl in 2020 and 2022, while the games in 2021 and 2023 will be played at GVSU’s Lubbers Stadium.

The Lakers and Timberwolves have only met twice before on the gridiron, with both contests ending in Laker wins in NCAA DII playoff action.

The 2020 match-up is set for Saturday, Sept. 12 at 8:00 p.m. in Pueblo, while the 2021 game will be played Saturday, Sept. 11, at 7:00 p.m.

Mildcats: GVSU Football earns dominant win over NMU behind five touchdown passes

Following a duo of games that came down to the final play, GVSU was able to earn a much more dominant win in the Upper Peninsula Saturday, Oct. 19, as they demolished the Northern Michigan Wildcats, 45-10.

While starting quarterback Cole Kotopka arguably posted his worst game of the season in the SVSU win last weekend, he was a man with a vengeance this weekend.

Kotopka posted two career highs of 402 yards passing and five touchdowns to five different receivers, including a 76-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Luke DeLong and a 63-yard passing touchdown to tight end Jayk Slager.

Even though 2019 has been a rollercoaster season for Kotopka, GVSU coach Matt Mitchell is happy to see his starting quarterback get his swagger back.

“We have faith in Cole,” Mitchell said. “He has earned the starting spot based on spring ball and fall camp. It’s been a tumultuous start to 2019 because of his injury where he missed two-and-a-half games, and it doesn’t help that we’ve had some ups and downs to our receiving core, but I think we’re finally getting everyone back on the same page, and I can’t discount the fact that we did a good job protecting the quarterback today.”

Despite redshirt freshman running back Tariq Reid not breaking any school records this week, he and fellow redshirt freshman running back Johnt’e Crawford had a solid outing. The duo combined for 136 yards on 27 carries, including Crawford punching in a 27-yard touchdown to give the Lakers a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

The injury history for GVSU running backs has been much too long, as Aryuan Cain-Veasey, Bryce Young-Walls, and Jack Provencher — the first three running backs on the depth chart — have each missed the past two games with various lower body soft tissue injuries. While none of those injuries are season-ending, Mitchell is proud to see the young ball carriers step up in a time of need for the time.

“They did a good job,” Mitchell said.

“Tariq had an ankle injury in the Saginaw game, so he came back and was a little hobbled. We were up against it when it came to our running back depth, but Johnt’e was the healthiest and did a good job carrying the ball. That’s an area of concern for us, but I’m really proud of both redshirt freshmen, they’re playing a lot and we did not anticipate that happening.”

The Lakers lone takeaway of the day came in the second quarter, as redshirt freshman linebacker Abe Swanson perfectly read a NMU screen pass before picking it off and returning it 22 yards, taking any wind that

the Wildcats had left out of their sails.

Mitchell attributes Swanson’s interception to not only his progress in practice, but also his ability to remain coachable and learn under the tutelage of senior linebacker Isaiah Nkansah, who has started ahead of Swanson all season.

“He did a great job reading the screen pass and made the play,” Mitchell said. “Isaiah Nkansah has been a great senior leader for us at that middle linebacker position and Abe is his backup. Abe’s been practicing real well, and he had more reps today just based on how things went, so I’m glad he was able to make that cool play.

With the win, GVSU improves to 6-1 on the year with a solid 4-1 record in conference. With some big games ahead of them including the Crosstown Showdown against Davenport Saturday, Oct. 26, Mitchell would love to see his team play more mistake-free football as they had into a key part of their schedule.

“I’m pretty disappointed in the penalties,” Mitchell said. “We had some penalties like offsides that we need to clean up, so we got to get locked back in there. The big thing is that we came up and got the win; there’s still some things we need to improve upon, but I’m proud of our guys for sticking with the process.”

This week’s GLIAC game at Lubbers Stadium is set to kick off at 7 p.m.

Carranza explodes, leads GVSU Soccer to lopsided win

The No. 3 Grand Valley State University Women’s Soccer Team traveled to the Upper Peninsula to face the Northern Michigan University Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 18. The Lakers once again came away with a convincing victory, 5-0, but this time, a fresh face exploded onto the scene to lead GVSU in a big way.

Forward Chantel Carranza provided her first hattrick of her young career, as the redshirt freshman scored the first three goals – and four overall – in the match, the second time a Laker has scored four goals in a single contest this season. Junior forward Ava Cook also scored in the match for her GLIAC-leading 14th goal of the season.

“Chantel was fantastic today,” said GVSU coach Jeff Hosler. “We’ve been focusing on getting her more touches, and she was on the ball finding her rhythm in the first half and then found really great spots in the second half to be dangerous and capitalize on her opportunities.”

Carranza gave the Lakers the lead in the 16th minute, when she punched home a through ball from sophomore midfielder Darline Radamaker to break the scoreless tie.

That would be the only tally of the first half.

The Lakers attempted to funnel the ball through the middle of their offense to their forwards early on, but Northern Michigan was able to stifle GVSU with their back-line. This made scoring opportunities difficult to come by in the first half, even though the Lakers controlled possession of the ball mostly on NMU’s side of the field.

Seeing the opportunity, GVSU switched to a wing approach to attack the Wildcat back-line in the second half.

“They were giving us a little more space out there,” Hosler said. “That opened up for us in the second half.

We had some really well timed runs and got our midfielders high up the field.”

Carranza scored again just two minutes out of halftime, using a setup by junior midfielder Lauren Ross from the left side of the box and finishing off the centering pass.

Just a few minutes later, a loose ball in the box was centered by junior forward Caitie Baron – the reigning GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week – and Carranza put the ball in the top shelf to add to the lead.

Moments later, Riko Sagara lofted a free kick to the center of the box where Cook was able to launch and head home the service. Another set piece, this time a corner, set up Carranza’s fourth goal when she finished off a combo from junior defenseman Olivia Trombley after an insert from another junior defenseman, Cecilia

Steinwascher, in the 83rd minute.

“I was able to get myself in front of goal and make myself available for my teammates to find me,” said Carranza after the match. “Once they did, I just put the ball in the back of the net and tried to help get ourselves a win.”

The win for the Lakers was their seventh in a row, which moved them to 10-1 on the season and 3-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

The victory also marked GVSU’s seventh consecutive shutout of their opponents. The Lakers have outscored their opponents 34-0 over those seven games.

Up next, the Lakers play the Northwood University Timberwolves at 7 p.m. under the lights at the GVSU Soccer Field in Allendale on Friday, Oct. 25.

GV Volleyball takes on Midwest Region Crossover

This past weekend, Grand Valley State University’s volleyball team traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the nation’s largest colligate volleyball championship, the Midwest Region Crossover. GVSU was unable to secure wins for all three games, but got a good amount of competition to focus on for the GLIAC championships coming this next weekend.

The team’s first two matches against Missouri S&T and Lewis were unsuccessful, leaving the first match with a 1-3 loss, and the second with another 1-3 loss. After the final match against Drury with a 3-0 win, the Lakers are at 9-11 overall and 4-5 in the GLIAC standings.

Coming off from three matches in two days is tough for any sports team, but the Lakers won their last game against Drury in three straight sets; 2514, 25-21 and 25-22.

Jaeli Primus was the star player of this match with 13 kills and one block, followed by sophomore stud Ali Thompson with eight kills, one ace and two blocks.

Coach Deanne Scanlon said that Thompson’s reputation among their competition was amongst the best at the Crossover.

“I think teams saw that in Ali and they scouted for her, so most of the teams game plans were to try and stop her, and that was definitely something we had to adjust to,” Scanlon said. “What made the difference for us to be able to win that final match, we were able to get the ball to our middles, Mattie McCabe and Jaeli Primus, and that just made all the difference in the world.”

Their matchup with Drury was successful, a 3-0 shutout, leaving the players with some optimism leading into their GLIAC championships starting next weekend.

Midseason check-in: Thompson settles into leadership role for GV Volleyball

It’s mid-season for the volleyball team here at Grand Valley State University and the Lakers may have finally found the leader that they have been searching for all season long. Even though she is only a sophomore, Ali Thompson leads her team with 208 kills and 23 service aces, as well as being the runner-up for digs with 222. Her leadership was recognized, as she was recently named GLIAC South Player of the Week.

“I was not expecting to be named Player of the Week at all, but I was super excited when I found out,” Thompson said. “It was really encouraging for me and my outside hitting because I’ve really been working on becoming more consistent on the outside.

In high school and club I played middle, so switching to the outside in college has been a change for me. My coaches keep telling me to trust the process and keep working at it, so getting named Player of the Week is encouraging that I’m finally getting to the place I want to be on the outside.”

One of the matches that led to her being named GLIAC South Player of the Week was against the Ferris State Bulldogs, the No. 1 ranked team in the conference. During this match-up, Thompson had a season high of 22 kills and the next day against the Northwood Timberwolves, she had 16 more, al-

lowing her to total 36 kills in just two days.

Thompson intends to take her performance from these two matches and use it to better herself and the team as well.

“I’ll take those games and learn from the good and bad in them,” Thompson said. “I’ll figure out what worked well and try to keep doing it, and also learn from my mistakes. Also, I think the setters and I connected well last weekend. They gave me a lot of opportunities by putting me in great spots with their sets.”

Getting used to her new position of outside hitter at the collegiate level is one of the things that Thompson hopes to improve on, but it isn’t the only goal that she has in mind.

Consistency and leaderships are two other aspects that she plans on focusing on.

“My goals for the season personally are to continue to get more consistent on the outside and to try to be the best leader I can,” Thompson said. “Overall, my main goal for the season is that we continue to improve as a team. We’ve taken a lot of steps forward, but we still have a ton of room for growth.

We have so much raw talent and athleticism, I’d like to see us start to play more consistent and pull out some big wins.”

GV Swimming & Diving continues winning streak at Calvin

This past Friday, Oct. 18, the Grand Valley State Swimming and Diving team competed against Calvin and Hillsdale in Grand Rapids. The Laker’s women’s team scored 168 points compared to Calvin’s 71. The women’s team also beat Hillsdale with a final score of 162-67. Grand Valley’s men’s team also topped Calvin’s, 149-86.

the women’s 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.65. The team’s performance in the breaststroke event was one of the key factors to beating Calvin and Hillsdale.

Sophomore Keegan Hawkins had a superb performance as well in the men’s 200 yard breaststroke, posting his best time of the season at 56 .97. Hawkins performance in the breastroke and winning the 200 yard IM, with a time of 1:53.8, pushed the men’s team over the top.

The Lakers distance swimming was also dominant at the meet. Sophomore Jesse Goodyear and junior Moritz Bartels won the men’s 1000m and freestyle, with times of 9:32.32 and 9:42.99, respectively. They also finished with the same placement in the 500 yard freestyle, posting times of 4:44.34 and 4:47.10.

The dynamic duo continued their amazing performances to help the Lakers continue their win streak, as Goodyear beat his own personal best time from last week against Milwuakee.

“I’m happy with that,” Goodyear said. “Every time I go faster in a meet it makes me feel better. It makes me feel like I’m going places,” Bartels had a very impressive performance in particular beating his season best

time. After falling behind to begin with in the 500, he pushed himself and beat his Calvin opponent, junior Jullian Iturbe.

“Our endurance base right now is very solid,” said GVSU head coach Andy Boyce.

“We spent the first month of the season getting (our stamina) established… Our distance group keeps pounding away with the long distance and endurance,” The distance events for women were also won by GVSU swimmers. Freshman Neta Shiff took first yet again in the 1000 for the women, posting a time of 10:23.37, also beating her season best. Shiff also claimed first again in the 500 with a time of 5:06.74, and senior Melina Goebel finished second with 5:14.4.

Many other Lakers won their events, as sophomore Melina De Cort finished first in the women’s 100 backstroke with a time of 30.13 and senior Harry Shalamon won the same event for the men with a time of 49.59.

Goebel took first in the women’s 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.72 and freshman Gabby Gnewuch took third with 1:59.52.

GV Rugby dominates SVSU in blowout win

The Grand Valley State men’s club rugby team improved their record to 5-0 on the season after a 65-19 throttling of Saginaw Valley State Saturday, Oct. 19.

The must-win game was tied at 19 at halftime and GVSU Rugby head coach John Mullett said the adjustments the team made at halftime were the difference in the game.

“I gave some instructions to a couple of players because they were getting away from what they do well, and I think that made a difference in the end,” Mullett said.

Of the few adjustments Mullet made at halftime, the biggest one was with team captain Cam McGloughlin.

“He had been playing in a way that was a little bit too much finesse-driven, and we told him to go back to being a north-and-south runner and once he did that he scored three tries in the second half,” Mullett said. “Once he got back into his game, the other team (SVSU) didn’t have an answer.”

Austin Cochrane was another key to the adjustments for GVSU in the second half.

“He played rover today, a position that our team invented for a guy that’s very fast,” Mullett said. “He was anywhere he wanted to be on the field if he thought he saw space and that kept the other team on their heels because he was creative running the ball.”

Although there were some up-anddown performances like McGloughlin’s, there were several players that were played well throughout the game.

“Our front row of Dorian Haney, Andy Williams and Campbell Gunst were very steady and all played well, especially in close quarters,” Mullett said.

Mullett gives credit to a tough schedule for the success of the team this year.

“I think it was our slow start and having some tension put on us prior to the game against Bethel University, who won the Great Lakes Conference last year,” Mullett said. “We knew that would be our toughest game of the year and that we had to come together for that week in order to keep ourselves in contention for our conference and the National Playoff. Now, we’re playing at a higher level with higher expectations of ourselves.”

Asked about his favorite moment from the game, Mullett was happy to see a firsttime player be able to make an impact.

“My favorite moment would have to have been the last ten seconds when Luke Gruchot scored a try in his first game,” Mullet said. “In the closing moments, he picked up the ball and made a good play. He ran it forward through about seven people and found the end zone.”

Now looking forward to the rest of the season, Coach Mullett is trying not to get ahead of himself, but he’s excited about the potential of this year’s team.

“We see the prize now and realize that we can’t just fumble it away,” Mullett said. “We have to actually show up, play hard and finish this season so we can clinch the playoff.

There’s only 16 teams that qualify for the National Playoff, so there’s a small margin of error for us to make that each year.”

Right now, the lakers are two games away from finishing the season undefeated and winning their conference. Before Saturday’s win against SVSU, they were ranked no. 9 in the nation. Next week, they will take on rival Ferris State at home before they finish off the season against Oakland University Nov. 2.
