Last week, Grand Valley State University unveiled its section of the Grand River Greenway, which is a milelong segment from 42nd Avenue and Pierce Street. The full greenway extends 36 miles and connects Grand Rapids and Grand Haven.

The greenway was first discussed in 1987 to protect land and provide access to natural areas as well as connect communities. Since then, 9,000 acres have been protected along the Grand River and will eventually be connected by the Idema Explorers Trail.

President Philomena Mantella said that the Grand River Greenway will be a resource for students moving forward.

“Part of what attracted me and many of our students to our great university is the beauty of our campuses, and the settings along the Grand River are a part of that incredible beauty,” Mantella said. “This trail system will eventually connect our campuses and be used by thousands of our students and student athletes for training, education and recreation.”

HOLLAND CAMPUS TO SEE RENOVATIONS

The Frederick Meijer Campus in Holland, opened in 1998, is composed of only one building. It has 12 classrooms, two conference rooms, three labs and 11 offices. University officials have plans to renovate the campus.

The campus has catered to both adult and commuter students for over 20 years, offering a variety of evening, hybrid and online courses. They also offer a handful of master’s degree courses.

Mantella, administration seek action after Grand Huddles

This semester, Grand Valley State University not only welcomed new students, but also a new president. Within the first month of the fall 2019 semester, President Philomena Mantella announced a new collaborative series, The Grand Huddles, as part of the Reach Higher Together initiative to build GVSU’s future.

According to a statement from Mantella, once all 16 huddles have convened, they expect to have received feedback from over 2,600 individuals on campus.

“As of Oct. 24, we will have convened 10 huddles, including one virtual session.

We have six more. In all, we will engage over 600 students, faculty and staff in all 16 huddles,” Mantella said. “We have also received over 1,000 comments via an online survey, nearly 600 post-it comments on boards stationed at all our campuses and over 400 polling/text comments.”

The GVSU community has had a great response to the project, said Cori Kahler, an executive assistant in the Office of the President who has been assisting the president and vice president with the Grand Huddles series.

MDHHS seeks proposals to advocate for crimes against women and domestic abuse traffic

GV CELEBRATES FOUNDERS DAY

Founders Day was celebrated Friday, Oct. 25 to remember the 300 people who helped donate to establish GVSU. On this date in 1960, the school was chartered by the State of Michigan after $1 million was raised to establish it.

Events were planned last week to recognize the founders, including placing flags around both Allendale and Pew campuses and a campus-wide giving day to raise money for first-generation college students. On Saturday, Oct. 26, a GVSU Through the Years luncheon was held at the Alumni House, where son of founder Dick Gillett spoke.

GVSU has been named a Green College

by The Princeton Review for the tenth year in a row and was included in “The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges.” The review selects universities that demonstrate notable attempts at sustainability through its actions and initiatives. Since the first issue was published in 2010, GVSU has been included in every issue.

ADVOCACY: A pair of requests for proposals are aiming to support advocacy for victims of various crimes. GVL | MEGHAN LANDGREN

Last week, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued two requests for proposals relating to violent crimes against women and victim advocacy. The funding being bid is a formula grant through the Violence Against Women STOP Violence grant. The funding goal is to improve system response to victims of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.

One of the proposal requests is open to law enforcement agencies, prosecutor offices and federally recognized Native American tribes and seeks to award up to 10 grants for law enforcement and prosecution projects, with a total of $2 million available for disbursement and a minimum award of $10,000. The second proposal request is open to non-profit agencies, community-based organizations and federally recognized Native American tribes that provide services to victims of violent crimes against women. $1.2 million is available to fund up to 10 awards for this proposal request.

Grant applications for both proposal requests must be submitted electronically through the MI E-Grants program by Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. The program period is Jan. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2020.

The p roposal r equests w ork i n c onjunction with the Services Training Officers Prosecutors program, which focuses on implementation of comprehensive strategies that are sensitive to the needs and safety of victims and hold offenders accountable. Proposal request applicants are being encouraged to implement these approaches through partnering with both criminal justice agencies and victim service providers to create solutions that are different, n ew a nd t ailored t o violence and domestic abuse survivors.

The first of the grants, STOPL-2020, focuses on developing and implementing more effective police, court and persecution policies, protocols and orders as well as developing, training and expanding units of law enforcement officers and judges.

GV hosts Homecoming celebrations

Homecoming week was in full swing this past week on Grand Valley State University’s Allendale campus. Students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered at numerous festivities that led up to the GVSU versus Davenport football game Saturday, Oct. 26.

Organizations and buildings on campus put together many activities for everyone to attend and participate in throughout the week. This gave students and staff opportunities between and after classes to enjoy their homecoming week. Alumni Organizations, Campus Life, the Mary Idema Pew Library and more held activities and events.

There was a plethora events for GVSU alumni, allowing them to share their memories and experiences from their time attending the university. On Saturday, Alumni Relations hosted two events: the Alumni Brunch and the GVSU Through the Years luncheon.

“Alumni are the main focus of both of these events, but it is open for anyone to attend,” said Courtney Geurink, assistant director of Alumni Relations.

Around 50 people attended the brunch and 60 people attended the luncheon to mingle with friends and family and share memories. Khayree Williams, Meaghann Myers-Smith, Naveen Kamireddi and Alison McManus Walters all spoke on a panel of alumni about their personal study abroad experiences and memories during the “Reflections on Global Education” themed brunch.

Louie at the Library and the Library Texting Service were both a big hit within the library for students and campus visitors.

Every year the Mary Idema Pew Library in Allendale and the Steelcase Library on Pew Campus showcase an activity that demonstrates how the automated storage and retrieval systems of the libraries work.

done the texting service, it’s been pretty successful and people seem to really like it,” said User Experience Librarian Kristin Meyer. “The library tying itself into homecoming week is fun for staff and students, it’s really fun to see how the library can connect itself into the festivities and events.”

To end the week of events, there was the crosstown rivalry game between GVSU and Davenport University, along with the homecoming tailgate. Students, alumni and visitors all enjoyed the tailgate and game even though the weather was not the best on Saturday. Lakers ended up taking the win, 27-7.

Each year, Homecoming week is just as festive and fun as the last, introducing new and improved events and activities for everyone to participate in to celebrate school pride.

Save the river, ravines and rowing

T

his week, Student Senate passed a motion asking the university to oppose the Grand River Waterway Project. This plan would use state funding to channelize 22.5 miles of the Grand River, and proponents of the project say the increase in boat access would foster an increase in tourism.

However, many opponents say that there would be a swath of negative effects, including harmful environmental damage, and claim the limited influx of tourism would likely not counteract the taxpayer costs. In September, the Lanthorn published a Letter to the Editor from Biology Professor Eric Snyder, who passionately argued against the project.

Importantly, a portion of the land to be dredged is owned by GVSU, and could cause potential harm to the state of the ravines. The GVSU Rowing Team has also come out in opposition of the project, as it would allow for larger boats where their practices take place, and their boats are highly susceptible to capsizing from the wake.

Already, many townships have come out in opposition of the Grand River Waterway Project, and it is time for the university to join them and echo Student Senate in public condemnation.

The Ravines are a staple of the Allendale campus, a beautiful, serene place for

students and staff to engage in nature. GVSU frequently shows commitment to environmentalism and sustainability, and should not stand for the environment to be harmed right on its own property.

The GVSU Rowing Team is an important part of GVSU’s history. It is the longest running sport on campus, founded in 1964, seven years before the official establishment of the football team. The team is uniquely privileged to practice in the Grand River so close to the Allendale campus, and it would be tragic for them to lose that space.

The Lanthorn strongly opposes the Grand River Waterway Project. In addition to calling the university to officially come out in opposition of the project, we encourage individuals to learn more and engage in their own activism against the project.

This issue has come out at an opportune time for action, with GVSU’s Making Waves Initiative being highlighted by the school for the next two years. Thus far, the Initiative has involved a variety of public events and interdisciplinary studies, and there is potential for it to be used for more.

By taking an official stance and engaging in community activism, students, faculty and the university administration could demonstrate a true commitment to West Michigan and the local environment.

when Warner Bros. Pictures announced that they were making a “solo Joker origin movie.”

“How do you make a Joker movie without Batman?” Since the villain’s evolution from impish comic relief to homicidal arch nemesis, his character and Batman’s have been closely intertwined. Joker’s cunning and creativity, as well as his dark but often hilarious sense of humor, is sharpened by his obsession with the “Dark Knight” (though whether he wants to kill Batman or just prank him into insanity depends on what side of the bed he wakes up on). Comic fans had to wonder — how was director Todd Phillips

planning on making Joker his classic villainous self with no Batman to spar with?

Three years later, the answer is simple: he wasn’t.

Joaquin Phoenix gives a brilliant performance as a Joker who has no cunning, no creativity, and (perhaps most insultingly to the original character) no sense of humor.

Phoenix’s Joker only made me laugh once, five minutes into the movie, and judging by the looks I got from the other theatergoers, the scene wasn’t actually supposed to be funny.

Rewind the Decade: Best male songs of the 2010s

The 2010s have been a more diverse decade musically than those that have come before it.

With the decade initially beginning with the club boom, to the resurgence of classic country, and the emergence of trap music, the 2010s have been nothing if not diverse. This led to the creation of some of the best songs of the decade. Here are the best male songs of the last decade.

1) “The Sound” –The 1975 There is no doubt that The 1975 have been one of the most influential indie rock bands of the last decade. This is due in part to them release two of the best albums of the decade: the social commentary of “A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships” and the bombastic “I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It.” “The Sound” is featured on the latter and contains all of the hallmarks of fantastic The 1975 songs. There are bouncing neon synths, an undeniably catchy chorus, the lead singer Matt Healy calling himself a cliché and the absurd name dropping of Greek philosophers (“A simple Epicurean Philosophy / And you say

I’m such a cliché / I can’t see the difference in it either way”).

Minimalism does not exist in “The Sound,” as it’s driven by Healy’s desires: sex, intimacy and validation. “The Sound” is an all-toocatchy song that has no right to be as cohesive as it is, with the copious amounts of self-promotion. However, it is in this self-promotion Healy finds vulnerability and the room to air his insecurities, lending an emotional sincerity that few are able to capture. In a decade littered with sounds, The 1975 managed to be “The Sound” of the decade with this defining tune.

2) “Mockingbird” – Ruston Kelly It’s hard to believe that Ruston Kelly has only one album out and it remains as the best country music album of the decade. Of the many songs that could have made this list (“1000 Graves,” “Hurricane In My Head” and “Blackout”), “Mockingbird” served as the lead single for his “Dying Star” album and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the best country songs of the last 10 years.

The production is minimal, with the song built around soft touches of acoustic guitar, a twangy banjo, flourishes of steel guitar, elegant touches of harmonica and real drums that add an organic texture to the sound.

While the production is certainly lush and traditional, it is the lyrics that really define “Mockingbird.” Kelly puts his storytelling chops on full display as he tells the story of addiction and its toll on a relationship (“You could have sat right there and got high with me / But you fell asleep and your dreaming brought the nightmares / I’m too strung out to be upside down / Pretty little mockingbird sing me a song”).

Kelly watches as his addiction takes over the relationship and as it slowly eats away at the one he loves to the point where the metaphorical life is drained from her. On a heartbreaking

tune that is guaranteed to cause tears, Kelly further demonstrates why his star is anything but dying.

3) “Climax” – Usher Usher was, at one point, one of the most influential male artist in the R&B genre — so much so that the music industry spit-out various clones of the singer in an attempt to capitalize off of his success.

However, when the club boom hit in the early 2010s, Usher’s commercial and critical success had taken a hit. He was typecast as another male pop star and was reduced to making some of the worst music this decade had to offer (“OMG” and “Scream”) that were bland, run-of-the-mill pop songs. Then in 2012, Usher released his best song of the decade with “Climax.”

Co-produced by Diplo, the song quickly drew comparisons to alternative R&B newcomers such as James Blake and the Weeknd.

Usher does them one better by embracing his pain instead of shrugging it off, as he mourns the relationship that is crumbling before his eyes with his signature falsetto.

The song is cleverly structured with verses that attempt to build one after another and end up crumbling before they can be completely built to represent the relationship he is in.

Then, comes the final emotional plea that, for lack of a better term, is intended to be the climax, but as the singer is delivering his soaring plea the track recedes, losing all of the momentum it had built up to that point.

While “Climax” is overshadowed by much of the singer’s catalog, it remains nonetheless beautiful as it is brilliant.

4) “Alright” – Kendrick Lamar “Alright” has become the song that is most synonymous with Kendrick Lamar. Released off of his album of the decade contender “To Pimp a Butterfly,” “Alright” showcases the pow-

er that resides inside of Lamar as an artist.

The song was released during a pivotal moment in American society, when the Black Lives Matter was rising in response to the widespread police brutality across the nation.

“And we hate Popo, wanna kill us dead in the street for sure,” Lamar raps conveying the cold truth that has arguably become a generation’s protest anthem and successor to “Fuck Tha Police” by N.W.A. Pharrell assisted in creating one of the most indulgent and memorable hooks of his career. “Alright” is a dark take on the reality of American society, while managing to protect the very fires of hope that remain. It serves as a reminder that we are going to be “Alright.”

5) “Scarecrow In The Garden” – Chris Stapleton Chris Stapleton has become one of the most unlikely country music stars to arise out of the past decade. Launched into superstardom due to a collaboration with Justin Timberlake, Stapleton has paved a way for traditional country music to make a resurgence.

While Stapleton’s “Traveler” album remains his most consistent and his best, it is the song that is buried in his third studio album, “From A Room: Volume 2,” that is his best. The song, built around steady drums, prominent steel guitar and an affirmative acoustic guitar, details the hardships that a family has faced (“The fields ain’t what they once were / The rains just seem to flood / And I’ve been thinking about that river / Wondering how it turns to blood”).

Similar to Ruston Kelly, Stapleton is able to display his songwriting chops at their full potential. On “Scarecrow In The Garden,” Stapleton reminds us of the fear that resides in the unpredictability of life. An achievement that will endure as long as the ground, he sings about, “Scarecrow In The Garden” manages to find beauty in the haunting truth.

“Jesus is King” stands meekly in shadows of hype, headlines

Oh, Kanye. Our sweet, controversial prince, Kanye. With a strong reputation in creating new, innovative music, Kanye West has taken his history of busting our expectations and entirely turned it on our

heads with his latest album, “Jesus is King.”

Fans certainly have heard of the album throughout its winding road of shameless plugs, promotions and controversial media. West first announced that he would stray from his hip hop and rap roots with a new gospel album, which had fans skeptical, but proved that fans were certainly along for the ride, regardless of where it would take them.

What followed were months and months of musical foreplay. To sum up some of the headlines and tweets...

“Kanye West takes trip to ‘find himself ’ amidst creating new gospel album” “Kanye announces release date for ‘Jesus is King,’ but then doesn’t” “Fans finally catch glimpse of ‘Jesus is King’ tracks, only to have to wait another year to listen” While this may be a simple generalization, it at the very least paints the picture for what fans and spectators had to endure before they could listen to at least a glimpse of the sought-after new music from Yandhi.

What followed was the musical equivalent of the Titanic.

“Jesus is King” leads with all of the style and flair of a hip-hop-inspired gospel album, as “Every Hour” kicks off the album with an upbeat hymn, fit with popping piano rifts and the swelling harmonies of the Sunday Service Choir. It’s flashy and inspiring, turning gospel — an intimidating genre for an unfamiliar listener — into something groovy and welcoming.

The ride into the musical seas of “Selah” showcase what Kanye’s hopes for the album always were: epic. The booming chords foretell of ballads that sing holy praises of biblical proportions and Kanye seems to lay his love of Jesus out for his listeners to take in. The waters are clear and smooth, and the vessel that is “Jesus is King” seems to live up to its ritzy hype.

Then the album hits the metaphorical iceberg around song number three. Kanye, I’m no music aficionado, but I do know that leading off any song with a reference to Chick-fil-A (regardless of how delicious their sandwiches are) is a musical sin.

The rest of the album feels like a slow, cold sinking into what was far from what was promised. “On God” feels like Kanye was inspired by money-sucking arcade game jingles and strives to make an overly-catchy beat with it. “Everything We Need” seems to drag way more than it should, and for a song with such a generic beat, the verses need to stand on their own. In this case, Ty Dolla $ign falls flat.

Don’t get me wrong, there were some high points in the album. “Follow God” is an absolute hit, with lyrics that fit right into gospel and production that screams classic Kanye. “Use Gospel” was a perfect example of what the rest of the album could have been, blending gospel and hip hop with Kanye’s signature style.

What really spoils a perfectly average album with a few hits were countless delays and insurmountable hype. While Kanye had all of the makings of a unique take on modern gospel, he built his own grave, hopped in and sang his own prayers into musical deafness.

GVPD emphasizes resources for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Grand Valley State University has strived to provide resources for victims of assault and abuse through the Gayle R. Davis Center for Women and Gender Equity. With October serving as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, GVSU students should know the resources and protections available.

Assistant Director of Public Safety Captain Jeff Stoll said that given the nature of college relationships, which usually involve non-married couples or casual dating, a majority of domestic violence cases on campus involve stalking, harassment or repeated unwanted contact.

Stoll said there are various actions that students can take to better protect themselves, including cease and desist letters and personal protection orders (PPOs). Cease and desist letters are documents that clearly outline that contact is unwanted, and can make obtaining a PPO easier if contact continues. Cease and desist orders also give police parameters to help since it provides proof of communication, Stoll said. PPOs are legally binding documents that must be obtained through a court hearing and be judge-approved. If contact continues after getting a PPO, the offender will be taken to jail.

On campus, cease and desist letters are most common due to newer relationships among students, Stoll said. He emphasized that students should develop social awareness when getting to know someone in order to avoid causing issues, such as sending repeat-

ed texts without a response, and that victims should clearly communicate that the contact is unwanted.

How the issue is handled also depends on what the student needs and what actions are able to be taken, particularly since casual dating can create gray areas, Stoll said.

“Maybe we do something, maybe we don’t, but we’re still supportive of that student...All (harassment situations) vary in the nature of the crime, but they’re still victim-focused,” Stoll said.

If the issue is not criminal, a victim may

be referred to victim advocate Krystal Diel.

Diel works with victims to help report the situation if desired, whether to the university or to GVPD, as well as write PPOs, get connected in counseling and make a safety plan. She said that victims of domestic violence should prioritize safety and reach out to a professional, even if they aren’t ready to leave the relationship.

“There are resources out there to help them.

It can be really difficult to leave those relationships for a lot of reasons,” Diel said. “I would encourage (victims) to come in and chat with

me as the victim advocate or get connected with the counseling center to make sure that they can talk about options and resources and talk about a safety plan.”

Stoll said that working with the Center for Women and Gender Equity allows them to better help victims, and that GVPD is developing skill sets to be supportive of victims on campus.

“Our job is better because we have Krystal helping support us,” Stoll said. “She can still protect and empower the victim while still helping us.”

Corgi enthusiasts gather for fifth annual Corgis in the Park

Hundreds of corgis waddled into Riverside Park for Corgis in the Park Saturday, Oct. 26. West Michigan’s largest corgi gathering returned for its fifth year, welcoming visitors from across the country to build community and support a charitable cause.

“It’s just really fun to see all of these corgi butts come out,” said Carolyn Conway, Paws with a Cause Public Relations Coordinator and Grand Valley State University graduate.

This year’s Corgis in the Park brought back its long-running Halloween costume contest. A previous winner wore a gorilla suit and dressed his corgi in a white wig to become King Kong and Ann Darrow.

Features included a high jump sponsored

by the Griffins hockey team and entertainment from GV Groove, an a capella group from GVSU. Founder Jarl Brey fell in love with corgis when he adopted a corgi named Vixen. Brey’s passion for corgis grew into a calling to meet his fellow corgi enthusiasts.

“Corgis are the cutest, longest, shortest dogs that exist,” Brey said. “They’re the queen’s dog, they’re funny to watch and kooky to play with. Once, I heard about a beach day for corgis in California, so I wondered how much enthusiasm there was for something similar in Michigan. I was pretty overwhelmed with the response.”

What was originally intended to be an intimate gathering of corgi owners grabbed the attention of thousands of people on Facebook. Attendees traveled to West Michigan

for Corgis in the Park from as far away as Wisconsin, Nebraska and Florida.

The corgi concept recently expanded to spinoff events such as Corgis on Parade, Corgis & Cocktails and Corgis on Ice. Talks of hosting the largest corgi-themed event yet at Chicago’s Millennium Park are already underway.

Corgis in the Park charges no admission, but encourages attendees to donate to Paws with a Cause, a non-profit that provides service dogs to people with disabilities. Brey hopes that corgis can draw attention and funding for service dog training, which costs $30,000 per dog.

“Everybody’s got to do something in this world,” Brey said. “You can’t just keep taking, you’ve got to give back in some way.”

Democracy 101 event discusses FOIA

The Democracy 101 series aims to inform students about democratic practices including voting, media’s role in democracy, democratic values and civic development as students. These weekly forums welcome both faculty and students to present on topics they have experience in.

On Oct. 23, Grand Valley State University students Tovi Gentilluci and Kayla Sosa spoke about their experiences using the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) as investigative journalists and how it helps investigative journalists report stories. Both speakers are well-educated on the subject, as Gentilluci serves as the president of the Student Journalism Club, and Sosa is a news reporter for WGVU Public Radio.

FOIA allows journalists to request information from federal agencies, who are obligated to share the requested records.

There are nine exemptions that protect agencies from sharing, including personal privacy, national security and law enforcement. While FOIAs can be written through the FOIA website — and some organizations like GVSU have web pages

specifically for submitting FOIAs — they can also be emailed or faxed.

The Democracy 101 discussion emphasized that FOIAs allow people to access more information than is readily available, but it’s often unknown that it is an option.

“It’s really important because it allows (students) to know that they’re not limited to the news around them,” Gentilluci said.

“They can get information on anything, about anything, like knowing the crime rate at Grand Valley and stuff like that.”

To increase the number of students aware of FOIA, GVSU will be hosting the second annual FOIA Fest, an event that includes speakers and activities to teach attendees about FOIA. While the event is in its infancy, it is quickly growing. As a part of the university’s Big Data Initiative, the event will emphasize that non-disclosed information is often accessible to the public.

“We are helping promote FOIA Fest, but we are also planning on doing workshops with FOIA for students that still don’t fully understand and don’t fully feel comfortable talking to professors,” Gentilluci said.

“Helping out with FOIA Fest helps not only get us out there, but also helps us connect with former GVSU students.”

that FOIA will be beneficial in her line of work, as she hopes to write stories about gender, such as the intersections between gender, race and class. “(That work) comes with a lot of issues that people don’t always want to talk about, so FOIA is going to come in handy for me in understanding and finding out information that people don’t necessarily want to be known, and then having that information help me tell the stories of people who need to be heard,” Johnston said.

101 panel allowed her to strengthen her understanding of the challenges that accompany investigative work, even for student journalists.

“It just kind of reinforced the importance of FOIA for me, and hearing all of our panelists’ stories and all of the challenges they’ve overcome was really great to hear and it was great to see how persistent journalists can be in using FOIA.” Democracy 101 events take place every Wednesday and alternate topics and times between 12-1 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.

Senate passes resolutions concerning inclusion, sustainability

Grand Valley State University’s Student Senate passed two new resolutions during their Oct. 24 General Assembly meeting.

The first resolution, F-19-02, is in support of GVSU creating a Prayer Center at the Cook-Devos Center for Health Sciences campus. The resolution is sponsored by Senator Ari Nitzkin, who noted that no prayer room is currently available for students, faculty and staff in the area.

According to the resolution, the “absence of a prayer room on the medical campus is in conflict with the mission statement of inclusion and equity at GVSU.” This mission statement reads that “the Division (of Inclusion and Equity) coordinates sustainable and strategic institutional efforts to engage all members of the community while also intentionally supporting and advocating for historically underrepresented communities. The division’s work furthers the university’s liberal education and student-centered mission.”

After time for discussion and questions, the senate voted to pass the resolution, with no opposition or abstentions.

Later, Senators McKenzie Gamage and Gavin Marlowe presented their resolution, F-19-03, to oppose the Grand River Waterway Project.

The Grand River Waterway Project is a proposal to channelize 22.5 miles of the Grand River. According to the resolution, this channelization will have negative effects on GVSU’s infrastructure, the Ravines ecological area and the Grand River’s ecosystem.

Furthermore, the project would allow large boats to cruise upstream, which, according to Gamage and Marlowe, would create problems for the GVSU Rowing Club, whose shells can capsize from swells of just six inches.

While the project has potential benefits for tourism, many townships have already opposed the idea. According to the resolution, these townships include Crockery, Park, Spring Lake, Grand Haven, Robinson and Polkton, and the cities of Grandville, Ferrysburg and Grand Haven, and the Village of Spring Lake.

However, GVSU has yet to voice any opinion regarding the project, which Gamage and Marlowe are hoping to change. After discussion about possible negative and positive effects, the Senate voted to pass the resolution with some abstentions and no opposition.

While both resolutions have been passed by the Senate, they are only in the beginning stages of a longer process. The next steps include sending the resolutions to whom they concern within the university. What is done with them after that is no longer in the Senate’s hands.

On the debate: a note from the editor It’s time to lay everything on the table regarding the news surrounding issues with the Board of Trustees’ public comment policy. The Lanthorn believes that the best way to harbor a conversation on this is to let both the university and the opposition speak for themselves so that students hear their thoughts straight from the source.

As previously reported, Student Senate President Eric-John Szczepaniak filed a police report against Grand Valley State University’s Board of Trustees for not adhering to the Open Meetings Act. He said that Student Senate’s gripe with the university was present the year before, when former Student Body President Rachel Jenkin spoke of similar concerns with administrators.

On the side of the university, President Philomena Mantella created a formal recommendation with aims to reduce the number of days in advance that speakers must request to speak from five to two. She also suggested to remove the clause requiring her potentially subjective approval.

With both parties aiming to best represent the campus community, they’re each proposing their own solutions to the public. In this issue of the Lanthorn, we invite readers to see both sides and make up their mind. We’ll be covering any conversations on the topic during the Board of Trustees’ next meeting on Nov. 1 and beyond.

Grand Valley State University is committed to transparency, oversight, and accountability with all of its constituencies: the campus community and the people of Michigan. The Constitution of the State of Michigan places oversight of its public universities with boards of trustees. Members are elected by the people or appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state senate.

The voters of Michigan, in adopting its Constitution, placed university governance in the hands of trustees, not the legislature. This is for good reason. It protects academic freedom and ensures that university oversight is the responsibility of the trustees who have operational authority. Changing this arrangement, which has been in place for 170 years, is unnecessary and unwise.

All 15 of Michigan’s public univer-

sities oppose Joint Resolution E, which would amend the Michigan Constitution to make universities subject to the Open Meetings Act. We believe this step is unnecessary because the Constitution already stipulates the kind of transparency the OMA requires of public bodies.

While the Grand Valley Board of Trustees is not subject to the Open Meetings Act, the board respects the intent of that law. The Constitution requires formal meetings of the board be held in public. Our board goes further and conducts all committee meetings in public. It publishes its agenda in advance, and the minutes of previous meetings are available online. All institutional matters that require board approval are voted on in public, such as the setting of tuition, room and board rates, budgets and contracts.

The university board welcomes public attendance at its meetings and encourages public comment, which can easily be arranged online (www. gvsu.edu/boardoftrustees). Those who

want to communicate directly with the board or individual trustees can do so through the web page.

At the November 1 meeting, based on my recommendation, the board will consider an amendment to our by-laws to reduce the advance time required for submitting a request to make public comment and to make it clear no request will be rejected based on the subject matter. These changes are in addition to ones already made in our process and website that increase the visibility of board activities and the opportunity to address trustees.

In addition, thousands of pages of university budget records, performance and activities are available online.

We thank the Lanthorn editors for this opportunity to inform the discussion. Transparency is an important and worthy topic and the changes noted above were informed by this community discussion.

It is time for the Board of Trustees to truly open their doors

It is time for the Board to follow the Open Meetings Act of 1976. There are 10,000 public bodies in the State of Michigan. All of them abide by the same rules except for 13. Those 13 are the boards of the public higher education institutions in this state.

The main point at hand is how the Board of Trustees handles public comment. At the Student Senate, we always put a place on the agenda to allow anyone in attendance to address the Student Senate with their concerns. All public bodies, except the public universities’ boards, must have this same requirement, and for good reason. What this does is ensures that the public is able to state their opinion on any decision that any board faces.

Here at GVSU, and at many other Michigan public universities, the Board of Trustees does not operate in a way conducive to hearing free thought and differing opinions. Yes, we should always assume positive intent about the folks working here at GVSU. I believe that everyone, from the Trustees to the students, wants what is best for this institution.

However, we do not exist in silos and we, the Student Senate, speaking on behalf of our fellow students, believe that more voices makes for better decision making.

This is not a new phenomena for Grand Valley.

Back in 1973, the Lanthorn editorial team criticized the Board of Control for defending their closed door sessions by calling these closed sessions just “an extension of board homework.” As the Lanthorn editorial team notes, “It is a fine day in Allendale when the policy-making division of this institution takes care of its homework before it faces the ‘real world.’

But when the real world amounts to nothing more than protocol, someone is being short-changed. And in this instance the public is the someone.”

For several years after this, the Lanthorn team fought to end these closed door meetings and broke into some

closed door meetings being held by the Board of Control. Looking back, history will not paint those that fought to keep government closed off from the public in a good light.

It is about the belief that those in charge can figure out who is worthy of getting an audience with their Board.

That is not the way it should be.

On November 1st, President Mantella will issue her formal recommendation to the Board of Trustees to change BoT 3.9 Opportunity to be heard. This policy, as it stands today, requires that individuals request to speak five (5) days prior to a meeting and identify the topic on which they would like to speak. Then it is subject to the approval of the University President and Board Chair to determine if they are allowed to speak.

The President’s recommendation includes getting rid of the approval process so that anyone that puts in a request is able to speak, regardless of content. It also includes lowering the time to two (2) days in advance of a meeting. While this recommendation is made in good faith and does reflect the fact that the current policy is not conducive to public input, this recommendation does not go far enough.

Anyone who attends the Board of Trustees meetings should have the right to speak without having to register in advance. These are public officials deserving of public oversight. Student Senate passed a resolution in March requesting that a time for public comment be added to every agenda of the Board of Trustees. This is the standard for all other public bodies.

The current policy and the new proposal both require anyone wishing to speak to have institutional knowledge in

order to talk to this public board. When I requested to speak in April of 2019, I was the first person to do so in six years.

People that are not aware of this policy should not be barred from participating.

The Board of Trustees spends dollars provided by all 10 million of Michigan’s taxpayers and the tuition dollars that you and I provide. In a democracy, all people should be afforded the right to talk to the individuals in charge of allocating resources. Boards should not set policies that inhibit anyone from being involved in their government.

I ran for President of the Student Senate in April, just before the April meeting of the Board of Trustees. I feel passionate about this topic and decided to request to speak to the Board before the five day window closed. I had the real fear that if I lost the election, then the trustees would decide that I should not be allowed to address them. I am aware that I hold a position of power and privilege in this seat and I now choose to wield it so that others are able to express their own opinions to the Board in the near future. I am charged with representing all students. However, I know that you are your best advocate.

You deserve your own seat at the table.

This new policy will continue to keep many people from addressing the Board. This debate is about the belief that those in charge can figure out who is worthy of getting an audience. Only those that know about this process will know that they have to put in a request to speak two days in advance. You never have to do that at your school board or city council meeting.

This is not the way it should be.

Rounding off another year of Homecoming traditions at Grand Valley State University, the drum majors of the Laker Marching Band (LMB) led the performance of the band’s most intricate halftime show at Saturday night’s football game.

Each year for Homecoming, LMB alumni join forces with the current LMB students to spread school spirit throughout the stands.

The current LMB played the first two songs and then the LMB alumni joined in playing the last two songs.

With the standards of the LMB raising annually, Color Guard Section Leader and LMB President Lindsey Willett said “(The alumni) always come in with very open minds and they are ready to learn.’’

The current LMB is led on the field and in rehearsal by drum majors Hana Smith, Sean Miller and Alyssa Hawker.

With three drum majors this year, it allows each of them to share and distribute their leadership responsibilities. While one drum major will run the field, the other two will be around checking to make sure everyone is in position.

“The three of us all bring a different aspect to the marching band and we all click very well,’’ Miller said.

Drum majors hold multiple responsibilities in the band including conducting, leading, developing and carrying out the instructions of the director.

Preparation is a major part for the leadership of the LMB. For each show, in order for

them to conduct the band, drum majors must understand and know all of the drill instructions. Smith said she dedicates an hour each night to prepare for the current and future shows. With seven shows during the season, drum majors have to memorize 28 scores.

In addition to preparation, Smith said much of her job consists of maintaining the morale of the band.

“I like to think about how my conducting is going to impact how we are playing and how my attitude during rehearsal impacts everyone,” Smith said.

Band, at the Homecoming game. The harder drill and music makes for the most difficult, stressful show of the season. However, Miller said it was a “good stressful.”

Between the difficulty of circle drill and the prospect of a small, but enthusiastic crowd during the rainy football game, Willett described the rush of excitement spread throughout the band during Homecoming week. Willett said performing circle drill during Homecoming gives students the “true collegiate marching experience.”

When things get stressful, Miller said everyone steps back and takes a breath as

they resituate themselves in the situation that they are in.

Leading along seniors Hawker and Smith, Miller is only a sophomore. He said this dynamic helps him push himself to be a better leader.

When asked about the most difficult part of being drum major, Miller was unable to come up with anything. He said he sees the experience as rewarding, especially when he sees the band play.

“There is no greater feeling than standing on a podium and getting to see the band put in all this hard work and be successful on the field,’’ Smith said.

Side-by-Side Orchestra Performance

On Thursday, Oct. 24 the Grand Valley State University Symphony Orchestra put on their annual collaborative performance with the Grandville High School Symphony Orchestra. The Grand Valley Symphony Side-by-Side concert began at 8 p.m. at Grandville High School.

The GVSU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by GVSU Professor Henry Duitman, performed works by composers Franz Schubert, Bedrich Smetana and Edward German. The GVSU Symphony Orchestra collaborated with the Grandville Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Matthew Bridges, to perform a piece titled “Marche Militaire Francaise” by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Both schools have been collaborating for this annual concert for the past 11 years, and plan on continuing to do so in the future. Duitman said that the two orchestras first collaborated and continue to do so because it is “an educational venture for both our students and the students in the local high school.”

The Side-by-Side concert was instituted by Duitman. The two conductors had worked together in the past, which prompted Duitman to call Bridges and the two agreed to bring their orchestras together for a joint concert. They have continued to do so ever since.

In preparation for the concert, Duitman said that on top of the regular GVSU Symphony Orchestra rehearsals, the GVSU faculty string trio traveled to Grandville to coach the high school orchestra. Duitman also said that he went to the high school himself the week prior to the concert to conduct their symphony orchestra.

On the day of the concert, the two symphony orchestras put the one musical piece they collaborated on together in a rehearsal at Grandville High School. Right before the concert, the two orchestras had dinner together, making for a bonding experience for both orchestras.

Duitman said that collaboration performances like this one are beneficial to both the university and high school students in “every way.” He said that this specific collaborative concert benefits

the students involved educationally, musically and socially.

He also believes the collaboration to have recruiting benefits for GVSU from the way the university students interact with the high school students.

“I am always so proud of how our students collaborate in a most friendly way with high school students,” Duitman said.

Duitman said that when it comes to the Side by Side Symphony Orchestra concerts, he most looks forward to “playing wonderful orchestral masterworks in a beautiful concert hall with excited high school and college students.”

Duitman said his favorite part of putting on this performance is the collaboration aspect.

“Working with Matthew Bridges and his students is a joy, and my students at GVSU are superb,” Duitman said.

With the enduring success of the concert, along with the ways to which it is beneficial to both the students involved and GVSU, it comes as no surprise that the Side-by-Side Symphony Orchestra concert continues to be put on year after year.

20th/21st Century Piano Fest offers experience for all

On Saturday, Oct. 26, Grand Valley State University held its annual 20th/21st Century Piano Festival, gathering students from far and wide to share in a day of recitals, music and a love for creating and performing pieces.

The festival was held in the Sherman Van Solkema Recital Hall in the Haas Center for Performing Arts, consisting of 50-minute performances. The event stretched from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with scattered breaks. GVSU students as well as the general public were invited to attend this free event and enjoy the music all day long.

Founding Director Helen Marlais began the event in 2008 as a festival and a competition. Her goal was to give pre-college students the ability to perform pieces from the 20th/21st century, as she felt that this era of music is often overlooked in yearly performances for students.

“The world of music is a very special one, and there has been so much excellent music written in recent centuries,” Marlais said. “This music needs to be heard and appreciated. Classical music is alive and well, as well as the wonderful art of piano playing.”

Marlais passed the torch in 2015, as Sookkyung Cho took over the event. She is currently in charge of the registration of the performers, organizing the program and communicating with other professors to put the festival together.

The event is now a state-wide piano festival housed at GVSU that includes performances from students of all ages, as well as a featured composer. The composer is chosen by either Marlais or Cho. This year’s composer was SunYoung Park.

Park was born in South Korea and has received many awards stretching across the United States and the globe since beginning her career in music with violin studies at the age of 6, and composition at 17.

Some of her honors and achievements include winning the 44th Pan Music Festival International Competition with Pierrot for Violin and Piano, and the New Juilliard Ensemble (NJE) competition; as well as one of her most recent pieces, HEEM, being performed by the Allant Trio in New York — as it was invited to be performed in the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall.

The New York edition of The Korea Times described her sound as a combination of Western music and Eastern sound, more specifically that of Korea.

Park was asked to compose a special piece for the event, and two GVSU piano students were chosen to perform before each recital. The recital was the world premiere of this new piece.

Park worked with the students every step of the way, giving her own feedback whilst helping them prepare for their performances.

IMMERSE: Students were given the opportunity to play pieces from the 20th/21st century at the Sherman Van Solkema Recital Hall in the Haas Center for Performing Arts. “For this particular concert, we started working together about two weeks ago,” Park said. “Sookkyung Cho started sending me (the students’) work and then I would comment through a Skype or email session, or on the phone. The whole process was several months from the moment Sookkyung Cho commissioned me and I wrote the music and then got to practice with them.”

She also spoke before each section of performances, explaining her journey through her career path and what her new piece represented.

“My role is to not only come here and direct and rehearse with the performers, but to really interact with the kids and the students and the audiences here,” Park said. “Festivals like this are amazing as a composer, it’s especially really valuable to living, 21st century composers. It is important as a composer to have this kind of experience where they invite you to have an interactive, creative process with the performers to let them know that there are still living composers working through to expand this repertoire of classical music.”

Following Park’s introduction and the performance of her piece, students of all ages individually performed their works for the audience in attendance and were judged

by Park, among others, to receive a trophy at the conclusion of the event. Each student received a participation certificate at the end of their performance as well.

Cho hopes that students who attended and participated in the event enjoyed themselves and got good performance experience under their belts.

“College students got to play a few different times throughout the day, so they got to experience how different perfor-

mances can be,” Cho said. “For younger students, not only did they love being on stage in front of a lot of people, but they were inspired by older ones; because I put all of the age groups all together —

first through twelfth graders and college students.”

The event wrapped up as being a day full of music and learning experiences for everyone, celebrating the repertoires of the new age.

GVSU FOOTBALL TO HOST ASSUMPTION FOR 2020 HOMECOMING GAME

Grand Valley State University and Assumption College announced jointly that the Lakers will host the Greyhounds at Lubbers Stadium for Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020. The meeting will be the first ever between the two schools on the gridiron.

Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly, who holds ties to both institutions, teamed up with GVSU and Assumption to make the announcement.

Kelly played football at Assumption from 1979-1982 and began his coaching career with the Greyhounds as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.

He then joined the Lakers’ staff as a graduate assistant and became their head coach in 1991, guiding GVSU to 2002 and 2003 National Championships, and posting a record of 118-35-2 in 13 years.

SEVEN FORMER GVSU ATHLETES INDUCTED INTO GVSU ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME

Grand Valley State University welcomed seven new members into the GVSU Athletic Hall of Fame this past Friday, Oct. 25, at the 39th annual Grand Valley State Charles H. Irwin dinner as members of GVSU’s 34th inducted class.

New members will Lucius Hawkins (Inkster, Michigan), football (2001-04); Shannon Carrier (Plainwell, Michigan) women’s soccer (2003-06); Kevin Kremer (Kalamazoo, Michigan/Central), men’s golf (2001-2004); Rebeccah Rapin (Saginaw, Michigan/Nouvel Catholic), volleyball (2007-10); Kelly Van Dyke (Wyoming, Michigan/Rogers), swimming (2003-06); Doug Woods (Ottawa, Ohio), softball coach/athletic trainer (1976, 1991-2014); and Ennis Young (Grand Rapids, Michigan/ Ottawa Hills), men’s basketball (1996-99).

This year’s class will join the 156 members previously inducted into the Hall of Fame. The first GVSU Athletics Hall of Fame class was inducted in 1986 and plaques honoring all inductees are on display at the Grand Valley State Fieldhouse upper arena lobby.

Rally through the rain: GV Football edges Davenport to win homecoming game

Despite a consistent flow of rain pouring down their facemasks, the Grand Valley State football team was able to claim their third consecutive victory on Saturday, Oct. 26, as they defeated the Davenport Panthers, 27-7.

The tone was set right away by the GVSU defense, who with the help of nonstop rain, forced a fumble in the first few minutes of the game that was recovered by junior defensive lineman Dennis Johnson.

Despite the conditions, the Lakers never turned the ball over in the contest, compared to Davenport’s three fumbles.

“That’s the first time all season we didn’t turn the ball over,” said GVSU coach Matt Mitchell. “Interesting conditions, but I’m proud of our guys for getting the win.”

Johnson’s fumble recovery wasn’t the only time Grand Valley took advantage of a Davenport turnover in that first half. The Lakers used their improved field position off a blocked punt and a scoop-and-score by redshirt freshman defensive lineman Christian McCarroll to help GVSU to a 21-0 lead in that first half.

“It’s so rare that defenses get turnovers, so when we get a turnover for a touchdown, it’s a big deal,” said sophomore linebacker Brendann Brown. “If any of us got it, it was going to be a good celebration, but I’m glad our d-lineman got it.”

Part of the reason why GVSU was able to get so many turnovers was because of the constant pressure of Brown and the defensive front seven, who totaled six sacks on the night. The back four did a quality job as well, not allowing a completed Panther pass until the third quarter.

“We knew we had to do a good job with our alignment, assignment and execution,” Brown said. “We had a lot of stunts in our defensive line, freeing up our backers. We knew

the quarterback liked to run out of the pocket a lot, so we had to wrap him up.”

In a game that featured less offense due to the adverse conditions, GVSU took advantage of their few opportunities. Junior quarterback Cole Kotopka did all the scoring offensively, finding the end zone twice with his legs and once with his arm on an eight-yard pass to sophomore tight end Jayk Slager.

Having scored in the previous two games and doubling his high school touchdown total, Slager said he is happy to be contributing as more than a blocker in the Laker offense.

“I just did what my coaches ask of me over the summer and during the season, so I’m trying to get better every day,” Slager said. “It felt amazing to get some points on the board for the team.”

The Lakers need to heal up fast on offense, as they’ve suffered a few injuries to key contributors over the last few weeks.

Starting right tackle Garrett Carroll wasn’t dressed due to a day-to-day injury suffered in

the win over NMU last week, and fellow starters Tariq Reid (running back) and Matthew Stefanski (right guard) left midway through the game due to undisclosed injuries. Reid joined fellow injured running backs Aryuan Cain-Veasey, Bryce Young-Walls and Jack Provencher, who have all missed multiple games due to injury this season.

As the Lakers head into the stretch run of the season, Mitchell wants to not only see his team improve on the practice field, but also get healthy with playoffs approaching sooner than later.

“We’re down a lot of running backs after losing Tariq (Reid) again,” Mitchell said.

“We had some other guys have injuries in this one, but we’ll get back in here and get to work with William Jewel.”

That match-up with William Jewel College will take place Saturday, Nov. 2, as the Lakers will kick off with the Missouri school at Lubbers Stadium at 4 p.m.

Well-oiled machine: GV Soccer overpowers Northwood in 3-0 win under the lights

The No. 3 Grand Valley State Soccer team earned their ninth consecutive victory with a 3-0 win over the Northwood Timberwolves on Friday, Oct. 25, in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action at the GVSU Soccer Field. GVSU improves to 12-1 on the season and 5-0 in GLIAC play.

“I think we were very organized all night long tonight,” said GVSU coach Jeff Hosler.

“Northwood has been on a really good spell lately. They’ve been playing well in conference play and we were able to cut them out of a lot of opportunities.”

Before losing to GVSU, Northwood was 8-5 overall with a 5-2 record in conference play and a 3-1 mark over their previous 4 games. The Lakers outshot the Timberwolves, 19-1, while

also preventing them from initiating a corner kick over the entire match. Northwood goalkeepers Bridget Adams and Andrea Everett combined to stop 9 out of GVSU’s 12 shots on goal during the match.

The win also marked GVSU’s ninth straight shutout of their opponents and 11th overall through 13 games on the season.

“I think the streak is really important and I’ve been really excited to keep the shutouts,” said GVSU defenseman Sydney O’Donnell.

When was the last time a team scored against the Lakers was Sunday, September 15 when No. 25 Minnesota State Mankato snuck a ball past goalkeeper Jessica Radice after a turnover in the 85th minute that allowed them a clean look one-on-one in front of goal. The Mavericks converted, and GVSU lost 1-0 even though they held a 25-8 advantage in shots.

Since then, not a single ball has gotten by Radice in goal, and on Friday, the Lakers had

no trouble converting opportunities against Northwood.

Midfielder Riko Sagara scored twice to lead the Laker attack while defenseman Sydney O’Donnell provided a goal and assist in the win.

After forward Ava Cook drew a penalty in the 17th minute, Sagara calmly converted to give the Lakers the lead. That 1-0 lead would hold until halftime.

In the 53rd minute, it was O’Donnell’s lofted cross after a foul set up a set piece for the Lakers that Sagara would soar in and head home to double the advantage, 2-0.

“I knew when I was going down the line the left footed cross wasn’t on so I just pulled it back and hit it with my right foot,” O’Donnell said.

“I saw three or four people in the box and Riko had a nice header to score.”

Just past the 60-minute mark, O’Donnell turned from provider to goal scorer when she collected a loose ball in the box and finished

into the far corner to round out the scoring.

“I was looking for Ava wide, I played her, and I knew she was one-versus-one with her defender, so I was just sprinting into the box because I knew she was going to get a cross off,” O’Donnell said. “Then it just bounced off of another player and I just hit it in.”

O’Donnell has now recorded nine points over the last six games from her outside back position.

“Sydney has been unbelievable, the last couple of weeks she’s been doing a really good job of getting herself forward and putting herself in dangerous positions,” Hosler said. “I think she’s really figuring out the outside back position in her second year here and she’s been a great weapon for us.”

GVSU will be in action next at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, as they travel to Ashland to face the GLIAC rival Eagles.

GVSU Volleyball dusts competition with back-to-back wins, hits milestone

This weekend, the Grand Valley State volleyball team swept the competition, bringing home two conference wins on the road. The first was against Lake Superior State and the second against Saginaw Valley, which makes the Lakers’ overall record 11-11 and boosts their GLIAC record to 6-5.

The matchup against Lake Superior State was a special victory for the Lakers as it marked GVSU’s head volleyball coach Deanne Scanlon’s 600th career win. This is her 25th year coaching at GVSU and as Scanlon celebrates this milestone, she is reminded of those who she’s worked with along the way.

“Reaching this 600th career win milestone means a lot because I’m at a place that really allows me to grow as a coach and lets me be apart of a school with a tradition of supporting their athletic teams,” Scanlon said. “It’s more than just the wins. It’s all the players that were involved over the years, the great teams and the experiences that we’ve had together.”

The Lakers lept to a quick start in their Friday match between LSSU and were able to secure a win in just three sets. During the first set, GVSU would go back and forth in scoring with LSSU until they were able to pull ahead 13-8 and eventually finished off the match 2523.GVSU jumped to an early lead in the second set with a 17-9 but was met with LSSU catching up 19-17. The Lakers were able to answer with a 5-1 run and finish off the set at 25-19. The third and last set would finish with the same score of 2519 after trading points with one another making the score 21-19 until GVSU would pull ahead and win.

“In the three set win against Lake State, we came out and were really focused from the start,” Scanlan said. “To stay aggressive, we started serving aggressively and getting them out of their system. We started passing really well, and we had a lot of people who were involved in the offense able to spread the ball around to keep them off guard.”

Saturday’s matchup against the Saginaw Valley Cardinals went into a five-set nail bitter, with each set ending with the teams being within six points of each other.

The first set would have both teams consistently going back and forth with points until the Lakers were able to push ahead and finish the set 25-23. The second would go the same way until SVSU was able to break off in a 24-20 lead and eventually win the set 25-23.

The third and fourth set once again had the two teams trading points with each other, as the third ending with GVSU up 25-20 and the fourth with SVSU up 25-19. The final set started with

the teams tied 4-4 until the Lakers broke free scoring 9-4 and kept the momentum going to finish off the set.

“In the five-set match against Saginaw, it was a familiar place that we’ve been in,” Scanlan said. “It was our seventh or eight five-set match this year, but we talked about going into this weekend that it was time for us to start playing with a little more maturity and experience. I feel like we’ve battled through a lot and that we needed to prove to ourselves more than anything that we are capable of beating some of the top teams in the conference.

I think that we had some confidence after how we did the weekend before in the crossover and we just stayed aggressive and battled by staying calm. I was very proud of them.”

The end of the season is quickly approaching, meaning that the GLIAC tournament is right around the corner for the Lakers, and coach Scanlon feels confident with where are heading into it.

“We’re sitting in fifth place in the conference right now, and I think that were in a good position to get ourselves a good seed going into the conference tournament,” Coach said. “We had two five-set losses early on in the ear to Northern Michigan and then to Wayne State. Those are a couple ones that you wish you could have back, but I feel really good about the way that we’ve been playing and approaching the last part of the season.”

Next weekend, the Lakers continue their on the road journey to play against the Davenport Panthers Friday, Nov. 2. in hopes of continuing their winning streak.

GV Women’s Tennis enjoys successful weekend at GLIAC Championships

Grand Valley State Women’s Tennis started out the 2019 GLIAC Championships on a good note Friday. At the tournament, held in Midland, the Lakers started out with a sweep against Ashland by a score of 4-0, whom they beat the week before.

On Saturday, the Lakers’ success continued as they took on Michigan Tech.

“It was a good team effort today,” said GVSU coach Samantha Schall. “We won two out of three doubles matches, so that was a good way to start the day, and our No. 3 team didn’t win, but bounced back well for their singles matches.”

To go along with their success in doubles, the Lakers had a good day playing singles. In the most important tournament of the year, the lady Lakers came together as a team.

“We won the first three singles matches that we had,” Schall said. “Marily [Canellopoulos] was the first one to win her singles match, at No. 4. Vera [Greva] won her singles match at No. 1 next, and then it came to our freshman, Taylor Barrett, who was playing in the No. 3 position. She won the first set on a tiebreak and the second set 6-2, so that was a really good performance from her to clinch the match for us.”

Although they play in several tournaments throughout the year, Schall said that this one had a much different feel.

There are multiple different tournaments throughout the year that the team participates in, but not all of them are both singles and doubles competitions, and only the GLIAC Championships bring together everyone in the conference, which creates a unique experience.

“The atmosphere of this tournament is really different,” Schall said. “The other tournaments that we’ve had were individuals with the men, but this is a team tournament so all the teams from our conference are here. It’s really nice that we get together in the beginning and have an award ceremony before everyone goes and plays their matches. It’s competitive when

we’re in the matches but outside of them it’s a really good and supportive atmosphere.”

As apart of the ceremony that Schall referenced, the Lakers received a few awards.

Greva was named the GLIAC Player of the Year, as well as a member of the All-GLIAC First Team, alongside teammate Taylor Barrett. Marija Leko and Canellopoulos also received honors, being named to the All-GLIAC Second Team.

“I’m really proud of the girls that received awards for the All-GLIAC First and Second team,” Schall said. “The girls worked really hard and they all deserved to be recognized for what they do.”

This weekend, both the Grand Valley State men’s and women’s cross country teams took first place overall in Westville, Indiana at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The event took place Saturday, Oct. 26, hosted by Purdue Northwest, where the women’s 6k was an easy win with a total of 17 points, and the men’s team won with 44 points.

After 18 consecutive GLIAC championship titles for the women’s team and 17 consecutive conference titles for the men’s team, GVSU showed up with their A-game and ran aggressively to secure yet another win in this year’s races.

Senior leader Alli Ludge took first place on the women’s side, with a time of 21.23.6, followed by senior Hanna Groeber, freshman Klaudia O’Malley and junior Madison Goen in that order. The Laker women secured all four spots at the front of the race with four more GVSU women running closely behind them.

On the men’s side, sophomore Tanner

Chada placed first in the men’s 8k with a time of 23.55.7. Junior Dennis Mbuta finished in 7th, and a few of his teammates placed in the 11-15 range right behind him. Both races were a success for the Lakers, but there is only two short weeks ahead to prepare for the upcoming GLIAC Regional Championships.

“In two weeks at the Regional, we’ll try to run a little more conservatively,” said GVSU coach Jerry Baltes. “Just try to keep it controlled so we come out healthy and get in one more hard workout the next week as we head to the in-state championships.”

As far as their competition goes, the ladies are up against Michigan Tech and Saginaw who are showing off a few of their best runners. Baltes said he is optimistic about their preparation for the next two weeks and believes the women are going to be able to take another championship away despite their tough competition.

Swimming & Diving team wins again versus Lewis

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Grand Valley State University swimming and diving team (7-0) competed against Lewis University (21). However, the Laker swimmers weren’t featured in their usual events.

Instead, head coach Andy Boyce decided to give his swimmers different races than the ones they’ve held this season. It gave GVSU’s team a chance to compete in events they can qualify for in the upcoming GLIAC playoffs. The Laker men’s team beat Lewis 184-102. The women’s team won 195-90.

“Sometimes when you do the same event over and over again, it gets old,” said head coach Andy Boyce. “It’s good for them to get out there and do something a little bit different.”

The first event of the meet was the 400yard medley relay. Both Lakers “A” relay teams won their event. The women’s team beat Lewis’s relay teams with a time of 3:47.62. The Lakers men’s A-team placed first, swimming a combined time of 3:30.13.

The Lakers again showed their dominance in the 1,000-yard freestyle events. As Boyce

Senior Melina Goebel took first place for the women in the event with a time of 10:48.31.

Sophomore Keegan Hawkins won the men’s 1,000-yard for the first time this season, swimming with a time of 9:47.54.

The long distance events continued with the 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Bianca Licari took first place with a time of 5:19.74. The race

was very close and Licari showed no signs of slowing down after taking first earlier in the meet during the 200-yard butterfly.

Sophomore Jesse Goodyear also improved on his already excellent season in the 500-yard event for the men’s team. He once again won the event, continuing his winning streak with a time of 4:41.37.

“In the 500, I felt good — (the other swimmer) was pretty close to me at the start, and I

was a bit shocked,” Goodyear said. “After the first 150 meters, I got away from him. After I got away I just had to hold my pace. It was a really comfortable race to swim after I got ahead.”

Freshman Roger Miret Sala won a very close battle in the men’s 200. In the last seconds of the race, he was able to beat the Lewis opponent with a time of 1:44.87. Senior Harry Shalamon, won the men’s 100-yard backstroke for the Lakers. He placed first with a time of 52.22. Freshman Neta Shiff took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.75.

“It was so weird to not swim the 1000 or 500 — I swim them every meet,” Shiff said.

“I’m happy that I kept going in the 200 and finished my other events. This 200-yard freestyle was my best time of the year.”

In the 100-yard breaststroke events, freshman Delaney Wihebrink won the event for the lady Lakers, winning with a time of 1:05.16. For the women’s 200-yard butterfly, Licari once again took first place for the Lakers with a time of 2:10.63.
