SURVEY REVEALS GROWTH IN WEST MICHIGAN

Grand Valley State University economist Brian Long conducted a survey into the Grand Rapids economy after monthly studies revealed a stagnant local economy this summer. The most recent study, held over the last two weeks of August, surveyed local businesses to gauge the city’s growth. The results show that businesses have grown.

Long emphasized how the global economy has impacted local businesses, particularly the trade war with China.

“The news media has highlighted the impact on farmers, which has resulted in falling prices for corn, soybeans, pork and other agricultural exports,” Long said. “Many west Michigan industrial firms have come to rely on a wide range of industrial commodities subject to new tariffs that are driving up prices.”

These studies are a part of the Institute for Supply Management, which releases monthly surveys for local businesses in the west Michigan area. The survey covers 45 Grand Rapids businesses and 25 Kalamazoo businesses. Results from the study are then used to analyze the area’s economic growth.

INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCES DISCUSSED AT COMMON GROUND INITIATIVE

With international tensions escalating, Grand Valley State University hosted the first Common Ground Initiative of the season Sept. 3. The event featured historian Lynne Olson, whose presentation centered around trade, tariffs and global nationalism. Olson also touched on reorganization of international groups like NAFTA. This event was hosted by the Hauenstein Center and demonstrated how alliances impact the global environment.

MANTELLA APPEARS ON ‘MICHIGAN MATTERS’

President Philomena Mantella appeared on Detroit TV program “Michigan Matters” Sunday morning. Hosted by Carol Cain, the show gave Mantella an outlet to discuss Grand Valley State University’s new degrees and how the university’s Detroit Center reflects GVSU’s goals. Student Senate announces tentative timeline on Battle of the Valleys fundraiser replacement

Student Senate formally announced that there would be no immediate, large-scale replacement for the Battle of the Valleys fundraising competition, which was cancelled in March. The senate is planning a smaller, internal fundraising campaign in the interim, with their sights set on a full-fledged replacement coming during the 2020-21 school year.

The annual fundraising competition against Saginaw Valley State University was cancelled last year because of the large time commitment required of a few members. Senate Vice President of Public Relations Ryan Fritz said that a former senator had to drop a class to commit more time to the event’s planning.

During the year-long break from a larger fundraising event, Fritz said the body would be reaching out to students, staff and alumni in crafting a new event. However, Student Senate did not want to go a year without an event, so has been discussing ways to raise some money for a campus-oriented cause in the meantime.

“Among cabinet members, we felt as if it would be important to continue philanthropic efforts throughout the year,” Fritz said.

“Through those conversations, we quickly realized that we want something big. We want something beneficial for the students at Grand Valley. With that in mind, we also realized that that would take a great deal of time and planning.”

Fritz said the senate still has many ideas floating on what can be done this year, noting the Oct. 12 rivalry game is just over a month away. He said t-shirt sales – which was done as a part of the Battle of the Valleys fundraising competition last year – were among the possibilities discussed for a temporary fundraiser.

During the Sept. 5 general assembly, Student Senate President Eric-John Szczepaniak said the body would be looking to develop structural planning to better define the role of philanthropy within the senate, which was absent last year. By restructuring senates mission and strategic plan, he said fundraising efforts could extend beyond just a week.

Looking toward the large-scale fundraiser’s replacement, Fritz said that discussions were held over the summer to begin discus-

sions on potential new events. The conclusion that the cabinet reached was that they wanted their replacement to be substantial, but this was not something they wanted to rush. Fritz said he wants all actions to be “intentional” moving forward.

“We are not planning continued efforts with the idea in mind that we must raise the same amount of money, that it must involve a rivalry,” Fritz said. “Our biggest priority is being more intentional with philanthropic efforts and events put on that benefit the community.”

Beneficiaries of a new fundraiser would be on-campus resources, with Fritz naming Replenish, the Counseling Center and a potential textbook fund as possibilities.

Fritz also clarified that Student Senate had not reached out to SVSU’s student government regarding future collaboration.

However, the senate clarified that the “Battle of the Valleys” name would be carried on to describe the football rivalry.

“We’re not going to stop,” Fritz said during the body’s Sept. 5 general assembly.

“This is a chance for us to take a small step backwards, catch our breath and work on something bigger and better.”

MSU files motion to dismiss Nassar survivor lawsuits

On Monday, Aug. 26, Michigan State University filed a more than 1,000-page motion to dismiss over 100 lawsuits filed

by Larry Nassar survivors. These lawsuits came after the $500 million settlement that took place in May 2018, which covered the first group of survivors who came forward, now known as the “first wave” survivors.

However, more lawsuits were filed during those negotiations, and more than 170 lawsuits had been filed by “second wave” survivors by September 2018.

While the university is facing backlash from their motion to dismiss the lawsuits, MSU Vice President and Spokesperson Emily Guerrant said it does not deter the university’s intent on settling with the second wave of plaintiffs.

“It is a legal filing,” Guerrant said. “It was ordered upon us by the court that if in the future we ever wanted to use any defenses, if we ever wanted to fight any of the claims, we had to file the angles, or the types of information we would use to fight them, at this time. So that was a court-ordered deadline that we had to answer if we wanted to use that information in the future.”

Guerrant added that around 90 of the 170 second wave survivors have already been settled, and the majority of the remainder are in active negotiations. However, even with these apparent efforts, complaints have been sounded from survivors nationwide. The Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) believes that MSU’s actions are further wounding survivors.

“Michigan State did not have to file these motions – they were not required to file these motions,” said MAJ President-Elect Donna Mackenzie. “They could have made a conscientious decision to respect the survivors, to respect the healing process and not file these motions, but they didn’t. Either they didn’t think about the impact it would have on the survivors or they didn’t care.”

Part of the unease surrounding the motion for dismissal is the inconsistency in treatment of the wave one and wave two survivors by MSU. The university settled with the wave one survivors, but are attempting to dismiss the cases by wave two survivors. Mackenzie said that both groups deserve to be treated equally by MSU. “It makes no sense that they’re doing this or that they are trying to treat these people differently,” Mackenzie said. “There is no difference between the first wave and the second wave. If anything, the second wave has a number – I think it’s a majority – of survivors who are still minors… It’s inconsistent with the message that Michigan State is trying to assert publicly, which is that they want to support, they want to do right, they want to make it right.”

The next step in the process for the filed dismissals is a court hearing. Mackenzie said that responses from the survivors will be due at the end of October.

The court will then hear oral arguments on the motions and make a decision on whether to grant MSU’s motions. Current MAJ President Robert J. MacDonald fears that if the motions are granted it will further traumatize survivors.

These dismissal motions were filed just days before the U.S. Department of Education released a report and issued a record $4.5 million fine to MSU for its mishandling of the Nassar sexual abuse allegations and their failure to comply with the Clery Act – an act that requires universities to disclose campus security information and crime statistics.

To improve in their efforts towards the Clery Act, Guerrant said MSU’s new president, Samuel Stanley, has put together an oversight committee focused on making sure MSU complies with the Clery Act requirements. Guerrant also said that MSU has been working hard to provide new resources to survivors.

“Up until a couple years ago, we did not have a strong effort on the prevention side of sexual assault – we had one person who was supposed to do education and training for our campus, which is 70,000 people,” Guerrant said. “So we’ve added significant resources financially and more people to have a more robust prevention effort. We’ve

also added more resources to the response side of assault, relationship violence and sexual misconduct.”

The Nassar case and sexual misconduct issues at MSU have also sparked change in universities state-wide, including Grand Valley State University. GVSU Victim Advocate Krystal Diel said that one outcome of the issues at MSU was a new position in the Center for Women and Gender Equity.

“The Board of Trustees created the Violence Prevention Education Coordinator position, so that position has been around since January 2019,” Diel said. “I would say that while our work has been growing and the work our center has been doing is constantly expanding, I think a lot of what happened at MSU gave Grand Valley some of the opportunity to revisit that and say, ‘Okay, let’s add on another position. Let’s have someone dedicated to violence prevention work.’”

GVSU has resources in place to prevent what happened at MSU from happening in the Laker community. Some of these resources include GVPD, the Center for Women and Gender Equity, Title IX and the University Counseling Center.

“When we say ‘It’s on us,’ I think it’s on all of us,” Diel said. “It’s on students to take care of each other and it’s also on faculty and staff and the university to make sure their students are protected and have a supportive environment if any harm does come to them.”

The end of Vaping in the Valley?

aping has become a cultural phenomenon – the fad of all fads.

Walking around Grand Valley State University campuses, it isn’t uncommon to see (and smell) clouds of fruit-loop infused vapor floating around.

However, as new reports and findings come out surrounding the effects of vaping, the end of Grand Vape State University may be near.

A lot of GVSU students have probably heard their parents tell stories about smoking cigarettes in college, saying it was “only something they did in groups” and referring to themselves as a “social smoker.”

Despite the efforts of YouTube ads that use puppets to shame those smoking in 2019, the phrase “social smoker” is not going away any time soon.

One would be hard struck to find a party and social gathering that doesn’t include students whipping out juuls and vapes with clouds following them shortly afterwards.

It might have become more than just a social pastime here in Allendale, as you could pass 5 college kids hitting their devices on the way to class, and a few more puffing clouds once they close their respective car doors to head home.

Last November, Michigan was one of the first ten states to legalize marijuana. Now, we are the first state to enact a ban on flavored e-cigarettes.

On the surface, these seem like conflicting ideals. So how did a state relatively open to recreational drugs turn around and take away our Juuls?

In recent years, marijuana’s

image has become more positive. Research has debunked many myths concerning its dangers. Meanwhile, vaping is a relatively new phenomenon, and when people started using it, we didn’t know much.

So maybe our first reaction to the ban shouldn’t be outrage. Maybe it should be an attempt to learn more, and protect ourselves from the nicotine addiction that many of our parents have struggled with.

On Sept. 6, U.S. health officials stated they are investigating over 450 cases of illnesses that are potentially vaping-related. The number of deaths relating to vaping recently rose to five. It’s becoming clear that vaping causes more health risks than we might have originally thought.

It’s also important to acknowledge that the ban is specifically on flavored vapes, not on vaping as a whole. For those struggling to quit cigarettes, they might decide that the risks of e-cigarettes are worth taking. But the flavors increase the appeal of vaping, which is good for the companies that sell them, but bad for the teenagers and young adults who pick up the habit without an existing nicotine addiction.

Do you even vape, bruh?

When did you start vaping?

Is that 50 nic? Were you still in high school? Why did you start? Can I hit your juul bro? What was so appealing? Did you even have a nicotine addiction, bruh?

While vaping has been the fad of the decade, it’s time to realize that our health is more important than blowing O’s.

“The Peanut Butter Falcon” breaks the mold

If you walked away from reading “Huckleberry Finn” in 10th grade thinking there should have been more professional wrestling, wished

“Rocky” was less running up escalators and more throwing trees over your head or just really love heartfelt stories of friends overcoming adversity to become a family, Armory Films may have released the perfect movie for your highly-specific interests.

“The Peanut Butter Falcon” follows a trio of social misfits traveling through the deep south — Zak, a 20-year-old ward of the state with Down syndrome who breaks out of his ill-placed retirement home to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler; Tyler, a vagabond arsonist with a troubled past who is the only person under 70 to want to move to Florida; and Eleanor, a rich widow with too much free time and not enough patience for Zak and Tyler’s shenanigans.

Together, the three lead viewers through a high-stakes but cathartically-hilarious journey towards self-acceptance and the knowledge that friends really are the family you get to choose.

The chemistry between the cast is a joy to watch. Viewers may spend the two-hour runtime tensing up in expectation for the worst thing that could happen, but “The Peanut Butter Falcon” sails around gut-punching cliches and dramatic misunderstandings with a cast of characters who are just too ride or die for each other to fall for the usual Oscar-bait story beats.

As burgeoning adults, we are hounded by relentless expectations of what adults are supposed to be able to handle in the “real world.” It can be frustrating as we are not born with the knowledge of how things work, such

as how to pay rent, manage money, go grocery shopping, cook and more. But unquestionably, the biggest struggle to understand is how health insurance works in this country.

It’s fair to say that figuring out how to navigate the healthcare world is something most of us are sheltered by until we turn 18. Once we arrive at college it’s a steep slope having to learn everything about how to schedule doctors appointments, fill out insurance documents, co-pays and go to the pharmacy.

But the harshest lesson to learn while navigating the world of American healthcare is coming to the realization that being healthy is simply not affordable in the United States, especially for college students.

It’s hardly an exaggeration to say all of us as students are strapped for cash.

Even if you have a job, chances are you’re spending the money you make

on the general expenses of college life (food, textbooks, gas, school supplies, tuition). This unfortunately means we tend to push aside our physical and mental health in order to cut costs.

There is no humane reason to settle for this reality. It’s simply unacceptable for a country as rich as ours.

The solution of having a universal, single-payer healthcare system is the most logical substitution for our current system once all factors are considered. But it’s important that we realize we are the group that would benefit most from this system.

Services such as regular checkups, therapy, medications and more would be immensely more accessible and affordable for us.

Grand Rapids passes expanded protections from discrimination

At an Aug. 27 meeting, the Grand Rapids City Commission approved a human rights ordinance with additional safeguards for marginalized groups. This ordinance came about from the efforts of LINC UP, a community development organization.

“For us, we believe that neighborhoods matter, that where you come from contributes where you go in life,” said LINC UP Executive Director Jeremy DeRoo. DeRoo said neighborhoods are not passive spaces because they actively shape people by providing opportunities. He mentioned some neighborhoods do a better job at offering resources than others, so LINC UP believes identifying opportunities for improvement requires listening to residents who face barriers.

In the process, DeRoo mentioned LINC UP heard a myriad of issues faced by locals on a consistent basis. From police incidents to housing, the organization recognized discrimination as a barrier toward advancing community lives.

Though most communities have civil rights ordinances with some level of protection, DeRoo recalled an issue with the one in Grand Rapids.

“It was scattered throughout the text,

but it was also just absent,” DeRoo said.

“There was not clear definitions of all the protected classes.”

DeRoo recalled a LINC UP staff member at the time, Lyonel LaGrone, wrote the proposed ordinance. It went to the City Attorney’s Office for review before arriving at the Community Relations Commission (CRC) as a 30-page draft.

Assistant to the City Manager Stacy Stout described the CRC as a liaison that brings community concerns before the city.

The CRC did not work alone on the ordinance, for Stout said the proposal got lots of feedback from the City Commission and a public hearing in April 2019.

Most commissioners expressed support for the ordinance. A few were neutral on the matter, commenting on questions toward ordinance’s clarity.

For provisions, the ordinance designates familial status as a protected class.

Stout explained how familial status can be a target for discrimination in housing, particularly if someone objects to many children living in one house. She mentioned discrimination can extend into employment, as employers may refuse to hire parents over the notion they will be distracted by their kids.

Another provision defines bias, or a view that compares an individual or group unfavorably to others. Stout said all individuals have bias, but the question

is whether people act on their bias. The action behind it matters, Stout said, on whether someone is putting people into harm or obstructing their civil rights.

Stout said one of LINC UP’s concerns dealt with people using police to target different communities for noncriminal activities. She mentioned “Barbecue Betty” and “Permit Patty,” nicknames given to white women who called the police on African Americans over trivial offenses, as two examples. The Washington Post reported the former called police on two black men using charcoal in an area not designated for charcoal grilling, and the latter contacted police over a black girl lacking a permit to sell bottled water.

Aside from defining bias, the ordinance includes a section on biased crime reporting, which prohibits people from reporting crimes based on someone’s membership in a protected class. Beside bias, the ordinance states no one shall retaliate against people who report discrimination. Stout used a hypothetical example to highlight why someone would fear retaliation: If a worker reported being discriminated at a restaurant, that person might risk getting harassed or fired.

For Stout, the ordinance also provides for a systematic referral process. Prior to its passage, the city responded to complaints outside their jurisdiction by advising people to contact outside sources.

Despite such measures, complaints often did not get filed directly. Stout said navigating many systems can be hard on people already stressed enough from discrimination. Therefore, the ordinance emphasizes the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) will inform complainants when their referrals are received by external investigative agencies. ODI will also keep records of those referrals.

After the ordinance’s approval, Stout explained the CRC’s next step is education. For her, an ordinance is only good when people know about it. Stout said she understands the ordinance is applicable to even Grand Valley State University students within city limits. However, she suggested other learning opportunities for them beyond knowing laws.

“I think they should also have conversations around bias and what it is to be a neighbor,” Stout said.

While Stout is confident about the ordinance in its current form, she acknowledged it as a “living, breathing document.”

The human rights ordinance has been changed before. A Grand Rapids press release mentioned it was updated in 2015 on protections for gender identity. Considering protected classes were added before, Stout said more may be added.

“As we implement and things arise, we are going to keep our eyes and ears open and we’re open to improving it,” Stout said.

Tests show water contamination in homes near Consumers Energy plant

Recent tests performed by the Sierra Club showed high levels of water contamination of homes surrounding the Consumers Energy J.H. Campbell Coal Plant in the West Olive neighborhood.

The tests showed heightened levels of contaminants like lead, arsenic and radium in homes in the area that get their water from property wells.

Sierra Club has expressed that further tests are required to determine if the cause of the contamination is due to nearby coal ash ponds, where Consumers Energy has also found groundwater contamination. Because groundwater contamination can spread quickly, further tests will also be needed to pinpoint where and how these contaminants entered the groundwater supplies.

Water samples taken from three homes near the plant in West Olive in July showed arsenic levels over two and a half times the normal levels for safe drinking water. Additionally, tests also showed high levels of barium and radium in three homes. Sierra Club found no contaminants in a fourth home they tested.

Chemicals like these ingested orally can cause severe gastrointestinal reactions and can lead to higher chances of bone, liver and breast cancer. Several neighborhood residents have complained of health issues caused by the elevated contaminant levels.

Professor of water resources at the Annis Water Resources Institute Rick Rediske said that these elevated levels could be potentially more dangerous for children living in the neighborhood around the plant.

He expressed that a good first step for residents would be to consider using water purification devices to help with getting rid of major contaminants in the water.

“Young children are generally more sensitive to contaminants than adults due to lower body weights, increased water consumption and their immune systems are less developed,” Rediske said.

“Residents can begin combating this by installing water filters that are certified to remove the contaminants, drink bottled water or dig a new well that is in a deeper aquifer that is not contaminated.”

Of the 22 coal ash sites with publicly available groundwater monitoring data for 2017, Michigan Environmental Council’s review showed that 77 percent of them had leached toxic chemicals like arsenic and lead into groundwater at levels that exceed state and federal drinking water standards. The Campbell plant, near where the water testing was done, has four coal ash pits, none of which have a liner to protect groundwater.

As of last year, Consumers Energy no longer dumped coal ash into these pits, but without remediation, leaching from unlined pits throughout their property can continue indefinitely. Advocates are urging Consumers Energy and Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to investigate water wells near the Campbell plant with further testing.

Long-term exposure to arsenic from drinking water can has been associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Toxins like arsenic and lead are especially detrimental to the developmental health of children with impacts that can be lifelong.

Sierra Club has announced it will be conducting further tests to determine how widespread the current contamination is, and to determine the possibility of further spreading. With many residents worrying about contamination becoming a long-term issue like Flint, Rediske explained that because the contamination has been found in private wells, it should not become a widespread issue.

“Flint involved the water supply for an entire city, and because this case involves residents with private wells around the Consumers facility, only a few people and homes are affected,” Rediske said.

“People with shallow wells should be concerned about their water quality and have their water tested, especially if they are near contaminant sources such as agriculture and industrial land uses.”

GV professor receives Fulbright Scholarship to study abroad

Students are not the only ones able to study abroad and expand their knowledge outside of the university. Professor Diane Conrad of the Kirkhof College of Nursing is also utilizing her skills abroad.

Conrad is a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship for teaching and research in Dublin, Ireland. Conrad sat down with her global team of colleagues to discuss the possibility of a national and international doctor of nursing practice (DNP). Catherine Corrigan of Dublin City University helped Conrad secure an invitation for teaching and conducting research in Ireland.

The DNP is also offered at Grand Valley State University in the Kirkhof College of Nursing. Nursing faculty from GVSU joined with professors from the University of Detroit Mercy, George Washington University and Dublin City University to help make the education a reality. Thankfully, with Conrad’s eligibility for sabbatical for Fall 2019 as an associate professor at the Kirkhof College of Nursing, it was.

“The opportunity to advance the nursing profession by promoting nursing and advanced practice nursing roles at the graduate level is a foundational goal of my scholarship work at GVSU,” Conrad said.

Conrad is no stranger to international travel, as she made her way across Europe in vacations to England, Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland. Regardless, she is

looking forward to immersing herself in the Irish culture and the opportunity to practice nursing on foreign soil.

“Ireland is just starting to educate nurse practitioners and the project involves working (and) consulting with academia, practice and policy makers to ensure the best possible nursing education at the graduate level,” Conrad said.

In Dublin, part of her project will encompass linking graduate students using virtual classrooms in Ireland to the U.S. universities of her colleagues. She hopes the new virtual teaching methods and developing relationships with students will promote cultural awareness of health needs and implement the strategies essential in promoting quality health care.

Although moving to another part of the world can be a challenge, Conrad is confident in those who support her.

“Yes, it is a bit scary to move away for four months to another country, but I have had wonderful support from both my American and Irish colleagues,” Conrad said. “The Fulbright Foundation also supports their scholars financially and with a support team to assist work visas and acclimation to a new country in order to fulfill their mission of cultural exchange internationally.”

Michigan bans flavored vaping products after increase in health issues

On Aug. 28, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) released a press announcement about an ongoing investigation: it has been found that e-cigarettes and vaping cause respiratory illnesses.

“The severity of illness people are experiencing is alarming and we want Michiganders to be aware (that) using e-cigarettes and vaping can be dangerous,” said state epidemiologist Sarah Lyon-Callo. “E-cigarettes (and) vaping products can contain harmful chemicals that can result in damage to a user’s lungs, heart or other body systems.”

With a wide age range using vapes regularly, individuals ranging from 19-

39 have been hospitalized for severe respiratory illness. Symptoms and cases of respiratory illness have been reported in 23 different states since Aug. 23.

Michigan is the first state to ban flavored e-juices, being proactive in trying to stop the problem of people using vapes without any previous experience with nicotine. The amount of teens and young adults contributing to the sales of vaping products has skyrocketed over the past few years.

“Don’t start using nicotine if you don’t have a preexisting relationship with nicotine,” Juul CEO Kevin Burns said in an Aug. 31 interview. “Don’t use the product.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer believes that banning flavored vaping products will reduce the amount of teens and young adults that are addicted to nicotine from

the popular flavored juices. The ban gives Michigan businesses 30 days to comply to the ban on flavored products, which will span six months and can be renewed.

Students at GVSU are already feeling the changes, especially among e-cigarette and vape users.

“My friend vapes and as soon as she found out that Michigan was banning flavored vape juice, she went to the vape shop and the line was out the door,” said GVSU student Hannah Swain.

E-cigarette and vape users should seek immediate medical attention if they start to experience any symptoms of respiratory illness. The symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, fever, nausea and vomiting. Symptoms may occur long after use of a device.

The 49th season of Grand Valley State University football got off to a successful start this weekend, as 14,552 fans saw the tenth-ranked Lakers were able to defend their home turf at Lubbers Stadium to defeat the Edinboro Fighting Scots, 35-10.

The GVSU defense allowed an average of 19 points per game in 2018, and that average may be set to go down this year, as they held the Fighting Scots to 120 yards of offense, including only 13 total rushing yards.

Junior Tyler Bradfield, who led the team with six tackles, credited the dominant defensive performance to having a lot of depth and the senior leaders providing the energy to get everyone riled up to make tackles.

“The defense is the driving factor behind setting the tone for the game; getting off the field quick and getting our offense the ball really helped us at the start of the game,” Bradfield said. “We got a lot of senior leaders on defense and our coaches did a great job of getting us prepared. We have good depth, and the senior leaders do a great job of getting everyone fired up to play.”

While the young offense showed flashes of greatness on a few big plays, a few untimely penalties and the pressure given up by the offensive line fully displayed that inexperience. Head coach

Matt Mitchell is confident that the offense will tighten up with more experience playing together.

“Offensively, we knew Edinboro was going to bring a lot of pressures, and we knew in the run game at times it was going to be messy,” Mitchell said. “Kotopka had some messy pockets, and looking at it from a turnover standpoint, we lost the turnover battle 4-0. It’s going to be hard to sustain and win football games.

We have to try to get that cleaned up, and I think there’s some room for improvement.”

Junior quarterback Cole Kotopka did a decent job in his debut as the starting quarterback, throwing for 253 yards and two touchdowns — one to senior Austin Paritee and one to redshirt sophomore Jayk Slager.

With an injury to senior Chawntez Moss, sophomore Aryuan Cain-Veasey took the wheel and proceeded to drive that metaphorical car 120 miles per hour. ACV had 200 yards and three touchdowns, including a 94-yard touchdown that currently stands as the third-longest touchdown run in school history.

“During the run, I just thought that no one could tackle me,” Cain-Veasey said. “I appreciate my o-line for blocking. They are young, but they put in a lot of work this summer, making it a lot easier for me.”

season total in the six games he appeared in. Mitchell loved the way he was able to step up when called upon, and wasn’t surprised with that performance after his summer.

“I don’t think (Aryuan) missed a practice the entire fall camp,” Mitchell said. “He practiced extremely well and I think that preparation really paid off tonight.”

Mitchell kept referring to Cain-Veasey as “Buck” in the postgame interview, and when asked about the origin of that nickname, the running back had a story to tell regarding the nickname’s origin that drew a few chuckles from

those in attendance.

“I’ve had it since I was a child,” Cain-Veasey said. “As a baby, I used to to eat a lot. It took three bottles to fill me up, and after the third bottle I’d throw it right up. My grandma felt like I needed a bucket everywhere I went, and the nickname stuck.”

After the win, GVSU starts off the year 1-0. They look to double their win total at home next week, as they’ll face the Delta State Statesmen Saturday, Sept.

AWIS pushes for inclusion within STEM with kick off event

The West Michigan chapter of the Association of Women in Science (AWIS) remains the area’s largest multidisciplinary organization for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This organization continues to impact others daily by pushing towards gender equity in science.

“It’s open to anyone, and students are very, very welcome,” said Karen Gipson, Professor of Physics, Associate Dean of Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies and President of the West Michigan AWIS chapter. “Networking, professional development and outreach are the three things we have done a lot of in the past and I think we will continue to do it for the future.”

AWIS will be holding an evening including connection and empowerment to kick off the year on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids. The kick-off will begin at 5 p.m. and continue through 7:30 p.m.

There will be a networking reception to start off the evening, followed by a lively discussion on the infamous “Imposter Syndrome,” a disconcertingly common psychological pattern where individuals doubt their worthiness and skills, struggling with an internalized fear of being discovered as not good enough — an “impostor” taking a job from a more qualified individual.

“The discussion on the ‘Imposter Syndrome’ will include how it affects women in other marginalized groups in STEM fields,” Gipson said.

AWIS provides multiple opportunities for women in STEM to reach their full potential, leading to a bright future.

The organization provides professional development at all career stages and in all workplace settings. The kick off event will end with a debriefing on planning for AWIS-WM for the year ahead, informing attendees on how AWIS can assist them with their own ambitions.

Padnos International Center reached out with ice cream

Our university has a cultivated reputation for making study abroad opportunities as easy to arrange and enjoy as possible. But planning out your trip over ice cream is a new level of study abroad advising, even whole for the Padnos International Center.

“The ice cream social is a totally new event that we’re trying out,” said Outreach Coordinator Alissa Lane. “It’s really a way

to let people know about the resources we have at the Padnos Center — if you have an interest in studying abroad but don’t know where to start, this is your first step. It’s also a way to get people familiar with our space, since we’re kind of out here on the corner of campus. With our name, people tend to think we’re in the Padnos building, but here we are in Lake Ontario.”

The Study Abroad Open House, which will be held in the Padnos International Center office at 130 Lake Ontario Hall, is also a great place to meet international

students and those interested or experienced in studying abroad.

“The point is that it’s very casual,” Lane said. “You can talk and eat with other students, browse program information and meet our study abroad advising team. They’re students who are either international — we have a really diverse group of international students here on campus, nearly 400 students representing almost 80 different countries — or studied abroad themselves. Their whole job is to help students plan their individual study abroad experience.”

Between Grand Valley State University official partnerships and outside programs spanning Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, there’s a wide variety of study abroad experiences available to students.

“We have two new programs this year,” Lane said. “One is to Austria and the Czech Republic for music, and the other to Israel is about history and the social context of the Bible. Some other ones that people overlook are our programs to Chile and Romania — we have partnership programs with both of those locations. They’re some of our most inexpensive places to go, but those partnerships have a lot to offer, so it’s a very cost effective option.”

Student Senate president elected to new office

On Aug. 28th, the Michigan Center for Civic Education (MCCE) elected Student Senate President Eric-John Szczepaniak as its new president on the Board of Directors.

As a senior studying social studies and education, his interest in civic education has been evolving from his childhood to today.

“I grew up with a mother who was very

engaged in the community,” Szczepaniak said. “I saw firsthand how her efforts helped other people in my community, and so I followed suit.”

MCCE is an organization that is invested in the future of civic education by helping young students become more involved in their communities, and seeks to aid K-12 teachers to give their students access to the best education practices that they can.

“Civic education is about being active in one’s community and empowering others to do the same,” Szczepaniak said.

However, he stressed that the role of civic education is more than just helping the younger generation to learn.

“I believe in the immense potential of every individual to be the change they want to see in the world,” Szczepaniak said. “I know that folks can work together to create change and I want to empower others to gain agency and ownership in their own communities.”

That ideal is the driving force behind his desire to become a social studies teacher, as well as his motivation for the many roles in the community that he has undertaken.

With his position as GVSU’s Student Senate President, his new presidency with MCCE, as well as his position on the board of education at Kenowa Hills Public High School, Szczepaniak has many roles to fulfill. What is the key to balancing his busy schedule and maintaining relationships? He suggested that, “by surrounding myself with friends in the work that I do, I don’t get lonely.” He finds that a support system is not only important, but vital as students head off into the professional world after college.

Artist demos showcase local talent, artistic process

On Saturday, Sept. 14, LaFontsee Galleries will be hosting live artist demos. The event, taking place from 12-4 p.m., will be held at the gallery located in downtown Grand Rapids. The public is welcome and admission is free.

LaFontsee Galleries hosts artist demos approximately three to four times a year and has been doing so for the past three years. Due to the high success rates of the artist demos, LaFontsee Galleries has plans to continue putting on these events in the future.

This upcoming event will feature four local artists Elizabeth Brandt, Linda LaFontsee, Kathy Mohl and Eric Wieringa. Since the event looks to feature various forms of art, each artist will be doing something that is uniquely their own.

Brandt is a fiber artist, LaFontsee creates mixed media art, Mohl is a plein air artist and Wieringa is a hyper-realistic, representational artist.

“All of these artists are currently represented by us,” said Tina Derusha, art consultant and frame designer at Lafontee Galleries. “We have a rigorous submission process that each have gone through in order to be part of our staple of 70 plus represented artists at LaFontsee.”

In choosing from their represented artists, Derusha said she looks for a good mix of mediums and subject matter that will in-

terest a broad audience.

The artists’ demos are set up in a way that allows them to be put on year-round, with opportunities for guests to engage with the art and artists in different ways with the seasons.

“In the warm weather months, we put tents up outside for artists to engage with guests,” Derusha said. “In the fall and winter, our demos are hosted inside the gallery.”

Typically, these artist demos draw in a crowd of about 60 to 70 people. As the events grow and become more well-known, Derusha said attendants are coming from outside the area.

The idea for the artist demos came to those at LaFontsee Galleries when they saw people’s interest in the art-making process, Derusha said. “(We) felt that there was a real interest in the community for people to connect directly with artists to learn their process and what inspires them,” Derusha said.

Those in attendance will have the opportunity to interact with the artists. Derusha explained that each artist will have a table where guests may watch their process up close and ask questions about their respective mediums.

She also shared that the interaction between those in attendance and the artists is what those at LaFontsee love most about the demos.

“We appreciate that guests have an opportunity to interact and learn more about the artists we carry and support their craft,” Derusha said.

Writers series seeks to ‘broaden students’ horizons’

The Grand Valley Writers Series begins anew on Sept. 16. This year’s series will feature a diverse cast of authors from multiple genres.

The series will open with Brian Oliu and Tasha Coryell, followed by Stephen Mack Jones Nov. 5. On Feb. 3, GVSU Professors Caitlin Horrocks and Beth Peterson will be participat-

ing. The series will come to a close in the spring, finishing off with José Olivarez on March 19 and Sarah Einstein on March 30.

Each event will consist of a “craft talk,” held in the mid-afternoon, and a reading and book signing, held in the evening. Craft talks will be presented by the visiting authors as short lessons on style, genre and publishing. The evening readings and book signings will be of a more casual nature and will offer students an

opportunity to speak with the featured authors.

The Grand Valley Writers Series, now in its 19th year, began in 2001 when the university’s Writing Department was founded. Professor and author Amorak Huey, the coordinator of the series, calls the event something of a “national caliber that you might see in a graduate program,” and “a chance to celebrate the arts.”

The invitation of writers from across the country gives students access to a new set of voices, Huey said. Authors were chosen by GVSU’s Writing Department for their unique talents and perspectives, which Huey anticipates will “broaden students’ horizons” beyond what they learn in the classroom.

“These writers are people just like our students,” Huey said. “Inviting them demystifies the magic of writing, and the art becomes accessible to our students.”

The first of the visiting authors are spouses Brian Oliu and Tasha Coryell, who currently reside in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Their craft talk will take place at 3 p.m. Sept. 16, location to be affirmed; their readings and book signings will take place between 6-7:30 p.m. in the Mary Idema Pew Library multi-purpose room on the same day.

“I’m really excited,” said Coryell, who

recently published a short-story collection entitled “Hungry People.” “I just had my first book come out last year and I haven’t traveled to any schools to do readings yet, so I’m really excited to talk about it.”

Coryell met Huey through Twitter. Although a rivalry exists between the two — Huey is an Auburn fan, whereas Coryell teaches at Alabama — Coryell said that Huey was kind enough to ask that she and her husband be part of the 2019-20 Writers Series.

Oliu, Coryell’s husband and self-proclaimed donut enthusiast, anticipates the opportunity to speak with students about “writing what they love.” He advises young writers not to shy away from the objects of their obsessions; Oliu, after all, writes frequently about donuts, video games and pop culture.

QUICK HITS FORMER COLORADO GUARD DELEON BROWN ENROLLS AT GVSU, SET TO PLAY BASKETBALL THIS WEEKEND

Sources inside GVSU basketball confirmed to Lanthorn Sports early Friday morning that former Colorado guard Deleon Brown has enrolled at Grand Valley State and will play for the Lakers this winter.

The guard from Grand Rapids appeared in nine games last season for the Buffalo, averaging 4.1 points per game in 21 minutes per game. Brown is expected to have a bigger role with the Lakers.

Brown joins a group of 11 new players donning the Laker Blue this season, with six being freshman recruits and five being transfers from other universities.

GVSU WOMEN’S CLUB LACROSSE TEAM IN NEED OF GOALIE FOR 2019-20 SEASON

RICK BOLHUIS RESIGNS AS GVSU WRESTLING CLUB COACH

The GVSU men’s club wrestling team announced that head coach Rick Bolhuis is stepping down. GVSU Club Sports has announced that John Sanderson has been appointed as interim Head Coach for the 2019-20 season.

The head coach of the program since 2006, Bolhuis created a culture of success on the mat at GVSU. During his tenure, seven wrestlers won national championships and almost 70 wrestlers earned All-American honors.

Bolhuis also earned numerous personal accolades, as he was named the NCWA National coach of the year in 2008 and was conference coach of the year five times.

No. 1 Women’s Soccer opens season 2-0, rout Rollins, No. 6 Lee University

So far, so good for the Grand Valley State University Women’s Soccer Team.

The Lakers opened up their regular season with two solid victories, winning 5-2 over Rollins University on Thursday, September 5 and 3-0 over Lee University on Saturday, September 7.

“I’m really proud of the result,” said GVSU Head Coach Jeff Hosler after playing Rollins. “Winning season openers are tough and they’re exciting when they’re at home, but they add some additional pressure on the side, and I think our girls handled it really well.”

Sept. 5th vs Rollins GVSU opened up their home opener against Rollins by rattling off four unanswered goals before Rollins put the ball past GVSU goalkeeper Jessica Radice in the 60th minute.

Redshirt freshman forward Chantel Carranza thumped home the Laker’s first goal of the season in the 16th minute with senior midfielder Riko Sagara and junior forward Caitie Baron teaming up for the assist.

The goal was also the first of Carranza’s career after she sat out the entirety of last season with a medical redshirt.

“It was incredible just putting on the jersey for the first time,” Carranza said. “After sitting out last year, it was an unreal feeling

to be able to go on the field and not be on the bench and put something on the board for my team.”

Junior forward Ava Cook took over from there. Cook put her prolific goal scoring ability on display by beating three Rollins defenders up the left side and scoring an unassisted goal from the far post in the 31st minute, raising the score to 2-0.

shortly after halftime in the 46th minute, where Sagara displayed her touch and vision as a passer by placing a through ball behind the middle of Rollins defense to gain Cook the opportunity to score.

Noteworthy too, Cook took an elbow to the jaw then was shoulder checked by her defender who seemed to have been frustrated with Cook’s physical style of play. Cook responded with said goal after receiving the pass from Sagara not 20 seconds later.

“Unfortunately, that isn’t as obscure as it seems for me, it’s something I’m used to, to be honest,” Cook said. “I mean if they’re going to do that it’s something that just ramps me up even more and it just gave me extra motivation to go at them fresh out of the locker room in the second half.”

Nine minutes after her assist to Cook, Sagara took matters into her own hands as she put a rocket through the upper righthand corner of the net from the middle of the field 30 yards out, putting GVSU up 4-0.

Perhaps having felt too comfortable with their lead, GVSU appeared to let off the gas for a short stretch, as Rollins notched two quick goals in the 60th and 61st minute to draw the score to 4-2 with under 30 minutes to play.

GVSU’s volleyball team splits weekend tournament with two wins and two losses

This weekend, the Grand Valley State varsity volleyball team participated in two tournaments, the 2019 Queens Fall Classic on Friday, September 6, in Charlotte, N.C, and on Saturday, September 7. they played in 2019 UNC Pembroke Invitational in Pembroke N.C. This week was a hectic one for our volleyball team, as not only due to their extensive traveling but also because of the uncertainty that was their schedule. Originally the team was supposed to play in the UNC Pembroke Invitational on both Friday and Saturday, however Friday’s games were all canceled due to the possibility of hurricane Dorian hitting North Carolina. After calling around, the Lakers were able to secure a spot in the Queens Falls Classic tournament for that Friday.

“The most challenging part of our weekend so far has been adapting to the long travel and the uncertainty of our schedule,” said senior Frankie Cavallaro before the matches.

“But our focus is on what we want to accomplish by the end of the weekend,” Uncertainty did not stop the Lakers from making the best out of a sticky situation.

According to head coach Deanne Scanlon, this weekend has been about more than just competing and playing volleyball, but really about bonding with one another.

“It’s really important to enjoy ourselves, we love to play, we love the team and we love being together,” said Scanlon. “We’ve had fun traveling and at the airport, it’s part of team bonding and experiencing things outside of the gym. We’re growing as a team and learning more about each other”.

Team bonding wasn’t the only thing the Lakers were thinking about. According to Callavaro, one of the main focuses for Grand Valley State was improving with each match.

“Our expectations going into the weekend are to improve from match to match and continue to compete at the high level that we have been practicing all preseason,” Callavaro said.

“We hope to start the year off with a winning record to set the tone for the rest of the season”.

Despite the goal of starting the season with a winning record, Friday’s tournament ended with two losses for the Lakers. The first being a five set match against Lander University with a loss of 2-3 and the second being against Lenoir-Rhyne University with the Lakers going 0-3.

However, on Saturday GVSU was able to rise up and brush off their losses at the Queens Fall Classic tournament and enter the Pembroke Invitational ready to play. The Lakers beat UNC Pembroke 3-2 in a nailbiter their first game, and also took a win in their second game against Coker with the score of 3-0.

With these two wins under their belt, GVSU may just have the momentum they need to carry them into next week’s invitational at the 2019 NSU Shark Invite II in Fort Lauderdale, FL., where they’ll be competing in their last tournament before their conference season starts on September 20.

GVSU Men’s Tennis has success as it opens short fall season in Wisconsin

The Grand Valley State Men’s Tennis wrapped up its first tournament of the school year in White Water, Wisconsin on Saturday, September 7. New tennis head coach Samantha Schall was impressed with two sophomores after the weekend’s matches.

“Jack Dausman and Martin Matov did well in doubles and they ended up winning the tournament. They started out the tournament well, they had three rounds of doubles the first day and won all three matches, which ended up winning them the draw. They both also did well in singles,” Coach Schall said.

“They both went 2-1 so they both had a loss but they were close, tough matches. Each of them had a good win on Saturday in their last match coming through winning in a tiebreak. It was good to see them fight through and win a close match at the end.”

With this being her first tournament that she has coached at GVSU, Schall said it was good to get out there with her players and get to know them better as well as get some good experience.

“It’s been good to be here for a few weeks and kind of get to know them as players and as people. We ended up taking all 12 guys to this tournament, so it was just nice to come together and spend a lot of time together as a team,” Schall said. “The expectations are really high, down the road we have set some aggressive goals as a team but it’s a process so really just getting them to believe in what it’s going to take, the hard work and the mental training that it’s going to take to cover that ground.”

Being that this was her first match as the head coach for GVSU, she was a diligent learner and put a lot of strategies in the back of her head for future matches.

“I have a lot of thoughts after watching

them compete for the first time this weekend and I took a lot of notes while they were playing and I talked to the team for quite a while after the tournament wrapped up about what we need to do next and where we need to get to,” Schall said. “A few things came to light that we can work on and it’s just continuing to build the strength to compete well and the mental strength that it takes to compete so I think it’s going to be a good week of training after seeing them play for the first time.”

The GVSU Men’s Tennis team will play in one more tournament next weekend at the Hope Invitational in Holland, Michigan as they prepare for the ITA Regional Championships at the end of September. Schall said she liked what she saw over the weekend and hopes to use it to improve and grow as a team moving forward.

“We saw a lot and feel like there’s still a lot to work on and build on, but we had a couple of good results. We had a doubles team

that won their tournament on the first day which was good,” Schall said. “The rest of the way for singles we had some third set tiebreaks which was a good experience for us. I would say a majority of our matches went to a third set so we had some good results and we lost those tiebreaks but as we get ready for the ITA (Regional Championships) in a few weeks, that was definitely good practice.”

The Fall season is a unique time for college teams, as even though most of the tournaments are individual, Schall is hoping to build team chemistry moving forward.

“In the fall it’s all individual tournaments so they’ll have the opportunity for some individual success but as a team, I think it’s just kind of getting on the same page with our team culture, with our vision and the way we want to do things,” Schall said. “If we can figure that out and come together then I think we’re going to have some good results in the spring.”

GVSU Cross Country season opens at Calvin Knight Invite

This past Saturday at Calvin College, both of Grand Valley State men’s and women’s cross country teams ran their first races of the season. GVSU placed in the top five in both the Women’s 6k and the Men’s 8k, leading into what looks to be a great season for the runners. With 35 schools competing this weekend, GVSU showed promising results.

Starting the day off was the Women’s Open, followed by the Men’s Open, and for such a beautiful day to be running GVSU seemed to show everyone what to expect from them this year. The crowd was huge, cheering on the runners as they crossed the finish line and celebrated with friends and families.

Since there seems to be a good amount of freshman on the team, the upperclassmen are more than thrilled to have the new recruits running with them. A few of the freshman showed impressive starts to

the season, placing in the top five GVSU finishers in all races. Lucy Karpukhno and Lynsey Amthor, both freshman, ran outstanding times in the first Women’s 6k, setting GVSU up for 4th place overall.

Dohm ran a 23 minute 6k afterwards and received first place, highlighting GVSU as a team to look out for on the DII cross country scene.

In the Men’s 8k, the upperclassmen took the spotlight and placed GVSU as 3rd overall. Sophomore Dawson Winters stole the lead this time after recovering last season from an injury, with senior Tyler Walters following just behind him. The guys team looked great out on the course, feeling good after their first run of the season.

Coach Jerry Baltes emphasized how nice it was to get back on the course after a long offseason.

“It was a good start for our individuals in uniform,” Baltes said. “A great opportunity for them to bust some rust off, and I Sudoku Puzzle #T840GV 8saw some5 positive things across the board.”
