The Granite Belt is a premium food and wine destination surrounded by stunning national parks and prehistoric granite formations. It‘s only a 3 hour drive from Brisbane on the Queensland and New South Wales border or a 30-minute flight. LIFE BY THE SEASONS Sitting high on the Great Dividing Range, more than 1000m above sea level, creates a region of four seasons and a climate a world away from Queensland counterparts. It can even snow. The seasons guide life in the Granite Belt and the produce it makes. SMALL BUT DIVERSE Stretching just 60kms from north to south and roughly half as wide, the Granite Belt is small but diverse. Dotted along the New England Highway are our villages and hamlets, with Stanthorpe, the main central town. Through the region, country lanes wind through vineyards, orchards and past the namesake granite boulders which dot the landscape like crazy marbles. If it’s a tranquil escape from reality, a gourmands indulgence or a romantic adventure, you’re in need of, for your wedding, the Granite Belt has something to offer you.

4 GOLDEN GROVE ESTATE

be elevated

The Granite Belt is your ultimate wedding destination. It is beautiful country; rugged and diverse, dotted with precariously balancing prehistoric granite boulders, big sky panoramas, meandering creeks, gourmet produce and award winning boutique wineries.

5

Get married away from the maddening crowds. This is not a region of large, mass venues - the Granite Belt offers unique, visually captivating and intimate options perfect for your special day. It’s a place where the stresses of city life can be left behind. The Granite Belt’s award winning vineyards create an amazing backdrop. Or perhaps you’d love to wed beside a sparkling lake, a tumbling waterfall, or in a rustic country shed. Our gardens are simply perfect for spring and summer weddings, with roses and lavender in bloom; or what about a more natural setting in one of our many state forests or national parks. For traditionalists, we have a number of churches and chapels dotted across the region. The region offers four-seasons. You can choose from a cosy winter wedding by a roaring open fire; in a garden with falling auburn leaves; a spring affair with stunning blossoms and wildflowers; or summer fun where water-abounds. The region is renowned for fresh local produce; perfect to create a feast for your guests. There is accommodation for all budgets, with venues where you can marry and accommodate your guests. And then there’s the honeymoon; enjoy a spa suite; a lakeside or vineyard chalet; a designer studio or a lavish holiday house just for two. No matter what you do, the warm and friendly people of the Granite Belt will ensure your event is one to remember.

6

Spend one of the most special days of your life being elevated in the Granite Belt this is where beautiful memories are made!

7

RECEPTION VENUES LETS START WITH A VENUE From rustic venues to awe-inspiring views there is a unique venue option for you. From boutique to unique, we can also offer you something special for your day. If you think outside the box, just about anything is possible in the Granite Belt. It’s your prefect destination for a relaxed wedding away from the hustle and bustle. If your style is traditional have a church ceremony followed by a delectable feast in a winery restaurant overlooking a vineyard. Or what about a beautiful garden ceremony at one of our tourism venues? If you prefer to be surrounded by water, get married overlooking a crystal lake at Storm King dam, beside a meandering creek or under a nearby waterfall. If a natural bush setting is more your dream, we have six national parks within an hour’s drive. And the region is surrounded by forest and native bush-land. Perhaps you could arrive by plane, by row boat, or even on horseback for an informal country wedding.

wineries that will take your b SIRROMET

Who could say no to romance amid the vines? Australians have a love affair with getting married amid vines or between wine barrels; and it’s totally understandable. There is something special about manicured vines set against the backdrop of rugged granite country. And if you love fine wine, it’s at your finger-tips. Granite Belt wineries and vineyards will offer you a stunning wedding venue. Unique, romantic and unforgettable for you, your loved-one and your guests.

10

WINERIES + VINEYARDS

breath away elevated taste

VERY SMALL CAN BE BEAUTIFUL - THE GRANITE BELT. JAMES HALLIDAY WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN

MARQUEE HIRE For a stylish wedding, transform a stunning vineyard into a beautiful venue with a marquee. Marquees can provide a romantic setting with an informal, relaxed atmosphere or an elegant, formal setting almost anywhere. Not only vineyards; marquees also work perfectly in garden or nature settings. A marquee offers you a totally blank canvas, so you can have any decorative theme or colour scheme you like.

Experience the sun, sparkling golden and infusing the sky, casting warm shadows over the endless rows of carefully landscaped vines heavy with fruit. This is wine country at its most beautiful and this is the day to match it your wedding day.

It can be altered to suit the size of your wedding and the setting. And, most importantly, it’s the perfect way to hold your wedding reception in a beautiful outdoor space without worrying that you and your guests might get cold and wet.

Some of our vineyards are so high on a hill you can see for miles. Unrivalled panoramic views at sunset, will sweep you off your feet. Wineries also offer you the opportunity to indulge in exceptional wines to celebrate your wedding day. 11

WINERIES + VINEYARDS IT’S ALL ABOUT WOOD There is something about a barrel room that makes for an impressive wedding venue. Their high gabled ceiling and the smell of oak will take your guests to another world. The Granite Belt offers a range of barrel rooms. Like something old? Ballandean Estate offers hundred year-old barrels to add that historic touch to your special day. Others provide the modern approach with timber barrels, stark metal and concrete floors. They have a raw but refined ambience. Most only need minimal decoration to create an iconic Granite Belt wedding venue – think candles in all shapes and sizes. Barrel rooms are the perfect location for your guests to gather for pre-dinner drinks and canapés prior to your reception commencing. What about an exclusive preview tasting or winery tour for your guests? Alternatively set up tables and chairs for a full reception dinner in a setting oozing atmosphere.

Precariously balancing boulders and stunning natural attractions will create a unique aspect for your special day. The Granite Belt is a diverse natural landscape from lush forest to rugged mountain country. Apart from your guests, your only witnesses will be towering trees, spectacular wildflowers and some of Australia’s most unique fauna. Just breathe our mountain air and experience elevated nature!

14

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

On your wedding day don’t be afraid to get out into the great outdoors. Nature provides a beautiful and one-of-a-kind wedding venue that your guests won’t forget. We promise you will find the perfect outdoor location to tie the knot in the Granite Belt. Plan ahead to create the outdoor wedding of your dreams.

DO YOU HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN? With a contingency plan in place, you can tie the knot in the great outdoors during any time of year (yes, even winter!). Here are some things to consider: 1. Plan for inclement weather. It’s supposed to bring good luck if it rains on your wedding day. This is only true if you have a back-up venue or umbrellas. Chill factor - consider a heated tent, or sharing blankets is a cosy and romantic alternative. 2. It can get hot too! During summer, consider shade options for excessive heat or plan a late afternoon wedding. 3. Make sure your venue is accessible. Give special consideration to the elderly and young guests. 4. Provide detailed information to your guests so they can plan and dress appropriately (and maybe not destroy their favourite Jim Choo’s)

THE GRANITE ARCH

5. Don’t forget the wildlife. Critters and native animals can be the most unwelcome wedding crashers. Provide citronella spray or candles. 6. Will it be windy? This could greatly affect your guests’ ability to hear the ceremony. Consider hiring a portable microphone.

GARDENS + FIELDS OF FLOWERS A BLOOMING EXPERIENCE The Granite Belt experiences four seasons (vastly different from the rest of Queensland), and in response our flora, flowers and gardens are constantly changing. In spring, our gardens are at their best and the region comes alive with fields of poppies and wildflowers. Our orchards are also ablaze with fruit blossom. During summer, the paddocks are full of delectable produce. You can experience stunning shades of auburn and orange, and falling leaves in autumn. This leads to the stark contrast of winter, where our beautiful deciduous trees stand elegantly bear. Mystical morning mist and frosts are also a common occurrence at this time of year. The cooler climate and granite soils enables English-style gardens, where wisteria, roses, hydrangeas and camellias bloom profusely, and Stanthorpe parks are dotted with the magnificent colours of the deciduous oaks. The Granite Belt is also home to several successful lavender farms which offer a visual feast of colour between November and April.

Be mesmerised by water In the Granite Belt, and the surrounding region, you can be mesmerised by cascading waterfalls, sparkling lakes and dams, and tumbling creeks that meander through the valleys. Not only extremely romantic, getting married by water is the perfect way to achieve a stress-free wedding, as the sights and sounds sooth the soul.

22

WATER + WATERFALLS

WATERFALLS Want to experience the romance of tumbling water? Try: UNDERCLIFFE FALLS Located on the Bookookoorara Creek in northeast New South Wales, 27kms east of Stanthorpe via Liston. The falls descend 150m, over a 30m wide rock face into a deep pool. RED ROCK GORGE FALLS Set in the rugged Sundown National Park, and after rainfall, plummet 100m. A lookout provides a beautiful view. NUNDUBBERMERE FALLS Also located in the Sundown National Park. Though not as high as most, they are still spectacular after large rainfall and are surrounded by red cliffs and caves.

BOONOO BOONOO FALLS Magnificent falls plummeting 210m into the gorge below. The Falls Lookout is associated with Banjo Paterson’s courtship and marriage. QUEEN MARY FALLS A beautiful sheer 40m drop of spring water flowing all year round surrounded by wildflowers that show their beauty in spring. The Queen Mary Falls are the top tier of three waterfalls situated in the mountains behind the small town of Killarney. It was once said by the locals that the falls were named after Queen Mary herself, who as a child travelled on horseback to see their magnificent display, but there is little proof. 23

A SPARKLING LAKE THE ROMANCE OF WATER Say “I Do” by a glistening lake. Our picturesque lakes and waterways provide a beautiful and relaxing environment for you to start your life together. Not only will you have a stunning back-drop, you can also use the water for a unique bride and groom entrance - arrive by speed boat, row boat, or even a canoe. You can also have a bit of fun and get the Wellington boots out! Our largest waterway is Storm King Dam. Located only 10 kms south-east of Stanthorpe, at maximum capacity Storm King Dam covers more than 110 acres and presents numerous striking locations for your wedding day. Many of our tourism operators also offer charming water-ways, from glistening creeks to expansive dams surrounded by grassy ways.

DO YOU HAVE APPROVAL? If you’re getting married at a public place, such as by a lake or in park or forest, check to see if you need permits, especially for alcohol on the premises. Your guests don’t want to see the happy couple leave for their honeymoon handcuffed in the back of a police vehicle. Your first point of call should be the Southern Downs Regional Council - +61 (07) 4681 5500. 24
