ARENA SHOWING 10TH OCTOBER UNTIL 28TH NOVEMBER 2015
ARENA Arena was formed in 1986 by the late Joan Wakelin and met in Newbury. The current membership still meets regularly in the area and encourages members to pursue different styles and approaches to their photography. This aim is reflected in the work on display. In addition, they have the privilege of seeing and speaking with other photographers who are not normally available to other photographic groups. Membership of Arena, which is by invitation only, consists of about 20 photographers. They meet five times a year and come from many backgrounds, their photographic interests being at either professional or experienced amateur level. Several of them are members of The London Salon of Photography and/or hold distinctions of the Royal Photographic Society. A num-
ber are known for the technical courses they run, for leading photographic workshops and for their photographic publications. The group has also developed a very successful annual weekend seminar of photography, currently held in Bournemouth, at which many eminent photographers such as Ian Berry, Brian Griffin, Mark Power, Simon Roberts, Martin Parr, Jem Southam, Chris SteelePerkins, Tom Stoddart, John Swannell and Nick Turpin have presented their work. Previous exhibition venues have included the South Bank, The Barbican, Menier's Gallery, Whiteley's Gallery, Cotton's Atrium and Hayes Galleria in London, The National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford, and galleries in Basingstoke, Poole,
Reading, Guildford, Salisbury, Battle and Colchester.

The group are currently redesigning their website www.arenaphotographers.com which will contain up to date information about events, the annual seminar and forthcoming exhibitions, together with links to many of the members own websites. It is hoped to have both Twitter and Facebook links as well.
CAROLINE HYMAN
The original Arena philosophy which is still applied today is "to applaud those working at the frontier of photographic development, to search and discover themselves and find fulfilment, to communicate, to respect the work of others and to carry no passengers" and we look forward to many more successful years.
