ALMOST BEYOND REACH WATERCOLOUR LIFE PAINTINGS SKYSCAPES
ALMOST BEYOND REACH There is no doubt about it: I am lost. Deep in the Prussian-blue darkness of Somerset woods, I have spiralled into an almost trackless centre. I take a deep breath and step outside the car, leaning back against the thin metal door. There is barely a breath of wind or sound, and it is the mildest of winter nights. Calm. As I lean backwards I look up. Above me a new horizon unfolds; a whole sky-blanket of darkness lit through by a million pale lemon stars. My work, too, has journeyed into new horizons: the search for light and colour in unexpected places beyond the everyday.
WATERCOLOUR LIFE PAINTINGS These atmospheric life paintings by Sarah Cooke manage to capture the essence of a live pose, using washes of vibrant watercolour paint, wax resist and careful pastel or pencil lines to express the body, without superfluous lines or detail. This recent collection of paintings started in Barcelona 3 years ago, where Flamenco dancers offered to pose. Back home in Bristol, Sarah has been going to drop-in life classes at local venues, such as the Folk House and the Greenbank Pub. She doesn't get to choose the model, the pose or how long the pose is held, sometimes only for a few minutes, so she has learnt to work very quickly.
SKYSCAPES I left a job in London during 1975 and started a completely new life on a small uninhabited island in Orkney. Determined to establish a real connection between myself and the island, I continued the tradition of farming the indigenous flock of sheep. Working the land as a shepherd I developed an intimate knowledge of the landscape, which I have used to further my long-term interest in photography. Orkney and the island's physical location is a unique environment, in that it is low lying and is therefore dominated by sky, sea and weather. The dual qualities of light and space also add up to provide a photographer with many gifts. None of my images are aided by computer manipulation.
