MORE INFO What is an Apprenticeship?

needs. The apprentice will gain knowledge and develop their skills with Grantham College and put these to the test in practical situations with their employer – these practical experiences will form the basis of their NVQ assessments. Depending on the subject, the knowledge and skills training will be classroom, workshop or workplace based.

Apprenticeships offer young people the chance to gain qualifications and earn money at the same time – they can build up skills and knowledge working with an employer. They are nationally recognised and available to young people who have left Full-Time education or are already in employment. An Apprenticeship generally lasts at least 12 months, although this can depend on the skill area – for example an Apprenticeship in construction may take longer due to the skills that need to be learned. An Advanced Apprenticeship can last at least two years. The training an apprentice receives is thorough, and will be delivered by both the employer and Grantham College, as the training provider.

The learning is delivered by a combination of attending college and learning at work – a good mix for those that do not want to remain in the classroom all day. Apprentices will receive recognised qualifications including NVQs, Key Skills and a Technical Certificate on completion.

What are the requirements?

How does it work?

Potential apprentices should ideally be aged 16 – 25 years, although older learners can still be accepted for an Apprenticeship. The ability to complete the programme and determination to succeed are the most important attributes for a potential apprentice. General ability in the chosen area needs to be assessed by Grantham College, as the training provider.

A set of separate qualifications called a ‘framework’ make up the Apprenticeship, as this is not a qualification in its own right. Frameworks usually consist of three components – an NVQ, Key Skills, and a Technical Certificate – and are set by standard setting bodies called Sector Skills Councils, which represent employers’

Lincolnshire & Rutland Skills Awards The Lincolnshire & Rutland Skills Awards is an annual event which provides a fantastic opportunity for local young people, employers, employees and learning providers to gain a well-deserved profile and reward for their skills development excellence.

SUCCESS STORIES What will an apprentice be paid? The National Minimum Wage for apprentices was increased to £2.65 per hour on 1 October 2012. This is the minimum pay rate and many employers pay more as you develop your skills. If you work in agriculture, the minimum wage may be different.

Jade Kerr

This wage applies to: ■■ ■■

All apprentices aged under 19 Apprentices aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship.

All other apprentices are eligible for the full National Minimum Wage appropriate to their age. Like most other employees, employed apprentices get at least 20 days’ paid holiday per year. If you need advice on minimum wage – the pay and rights helpline is 0800 9172 368 or visit www.gov.uk

Jade Kerr is an Advanced Apprentice at Scots Hair Design in Grantham, and won ‘Apprentice of the Year’ at Grantham College’s annual Awards Ceremony. Jade was also a finalist at the Lincolnshire & Rutland Skills Awards in the category of Retail and Commercial Enterprise.

Further progression Employers will often support their staff to study for higher qualifications such as HNC, HND, and Degrees so the apprentice can continue to study and work at the same time. This will help them avoid the costs that Full-Time undergraduates can face. However, there are some disadvantages to Apprenticeships – Studying at a higher level can take longer with some Apprenticeships – but this should be offset against the debts incurred with Full-Time study. Some young people would prefer to learn in an academic environment not the workplace. Not every occupation can support Apprenticeships and they may have to take the academic route instead.

04

David Kirk Advanced Apprentice David Kirk won Apprentice of the Year at the Lincolnshire & Rutland Skills Awards, in the Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies category. David is a motorcycle technician working for Webbs of Lincoln, and has completed both an Intermediate and an Advanced Apprenticeship with the company.

WORKING WITH Anglian Water is a privatised water company that operates in the East of England employing over 4,000 people and serving over 6 million customers and businesses in the East of England. Grantham College have been working with Anglian Water to deliver Engineering Apprenticeship frameworks for 2 years. In 2009, 8 apprentices began their training, moving onto Advanced Apprenticeship training in 2010. A further 3 Advanced Apprentices and 9 Apprentices enrolled in 2010.

“When I approached Grantham College in July 2009 about the possibility of sending Anglian Water apprentices to them, the C&G 2330 we required was not part of their portfolio. In less than three months, not only was a bespoke Apprenticeship available – a brand new workshop had been equipped for the electrical training, tutors had been secured and a timetable had been set. I feel that Grantham College has set the bar in terms of being a centre of excellence for Apprenticeships; they have shown that they are prepared to deliver what the customer needs rather than push learners through a qualification that is not fit for purpose. They really care about their learners’ performance and wellbeing.” Alison Withers Development Manager Anglian Water
