The event, now in its fourth year, was held in the College Refectory where the full-time students supported Level 3 apprentices who were competing against each other to be crowned the winner. This year’s theme was ‘A Night at the Movies’ where Jade Kerr from Scots was announced as the winner with her creation based on the movie Alice in Wonderland.

Alex Mercer, a BTEC National Certificate Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness student was awarded Grantham College student of the Year for 2010/11. Alex is also part of the College’s Table Tennis Academy and the School Sports Partnership Leadership Academy for the last two years. Alex also volunteers at several local sports clubs as well as being accepted to umpire at the 2012 Olympics.

Victoria beat off competition from other students to have her design used at this year’s Grantham Arts Fair. A brief was given by Grantham Art group who decided on this year’s theme as being ‘Grantham’. Victoria’s design was seen on the Guildhall Art Centre website as well as being on promotional material around the town running up to the event. Victoria said ‘I enjoyed representing Grantham College and when I found out my design was the winning one I was really pleased.’

As part of the ongoing ‘Learner of the Month’ scheme which seeks to acknowledge and reward students success and dedication of any kind, each month learners are nominated by their course tutors and at the end of the academic year, a prize draw is made to reward the overall winner. Jake Gilbert, a Hospitality & Catering student was the lucky winner of the annual prize draw, winning a laptop for his studies.

June saw three students from the Carpentry & Joinery department represent Grantham College in the Merlane Trophy competition at Sheffield City College. Out of 22 students competing James Philpotts came in second place, Louis Warnes achieved fourth as well as being presented the Ernie Leach Cup for being the most health and safety conscious throughout the competition and David Jeremy came in thirteenth.

At the end of each academic year Grantham College celebrates the success of all kinds at the Annual Awards Ceremony. Each curriculum area chooses their own winners, it is a fantastic night to share your success and be proud of your time at Grantham College!

Leslie has always had a passion for photography and started his career as a trainee photography technician. Leslie then got a position at the London Metropolitan Police working as a criminal photographer, covering all major events including the Brixton Riots. Wanting to combine his love of photography with his interest in science Leslie transferred to the Lincolnshire police to work as a crime scene investigator. Over the next 20 years Leslie covered everything from burglaries to murders.

Paul has had 33 years’ experience in the manufacturing industries dealing mainly with large Agricultural and Construction. Throughout his career Paul has been lucky enough to have travelled around most of Europe and Asia.

Karen has worked all her life with horses, from a young age she worked at her local stables helping wherever she could, competing in show jumping and spending 3 months in America as a riding instructor at a holiday camp.

Paul was previously a student at Grantham College studying ONC/HND in mechanical engineering and now delivers the BTEC courses in Operation & Maintenance Engineering. As well as working at Grantham College, Paul has been running his own business for over 6 years which provides training to manufacturers, creating technical manuals and advising on forthcoming EU legislation.

After qualifying as a British Horse Society Instructor, Karen used her experience working in the horse industry to start her own riding centre. It was here that Karen started teaching Emma Sheardown, a rider with cerebral palsy. Karen and Emma have since travelled the world successfully competing and are looking forward to finding out if they have qualified for the London 2012 Paralympics.

“I believe Operation and Maintenance engineering is important as we are always going to need machines, no matter how well they are built they will always need maintenance people to keep them going. My first boss used to think that, and he used to say if you can’t grow it, you have to dig it out of the ground, and no one likes doing that by hand!”

Karen is one of the experienced and qualified team of lecturers teaching on the Equine courses and comments “It is really exciting to be able to share my knowledge and enthusiasm with the students”.

After over 30 years within the police force Leslie decided to take the move into teaching, delivering the Forensic Science course. “Working in this field can be hard at times. Having first-hand experience of working with real life crime scenes means I can pass on my skills and knowledge to the students, in order to prepare them for a career within forensic sciences.”

Sustained Support Whilst we aim to instil confidence and independence, you are never on your own at Grantham College. Work Experience Grantham College offers the chance to apply your studies to real life via exciting work experience opportunities. Hospitality & Catering students train in the live public environment of the College’s Witham Room Restaurant. Public Service students share training and facilities with the Army, Navy, and Royal Marines. Travel & Tourism students jet off to diverse destinations including Spain, Hungary and Disneyland Paris, Visual & Performing Arts students are the stars of an annual overseas trip, whilst Early Years students have the opportunity to experience nursery settings in Sweden.

Student Volunteers Throughout the year Grantham College students are involved in a variety of volunteering opportunities which not only add to their CVs, but also help to build strong links with the community. Recent projects have included assisting at Belton Horse Trials and taking part in the maintenance of local churchyards

International Students Students have the opportunity to be exposed to other cultures thanks to our growing international associations. We regularly welcome students from the Far East, whilst Hungarian, Polish and Swedish students join us on work experience.

National Union Of Students As a student at Grantham College you can join the NUS and take advantage of their support and benefits. For £11 an NUS Extra card offers discounts with high street stores, local taxis and much more. Our Students’ Union also holds regular social and networking events and charity campaigns.

Learner Voice The learner is central to everything we do. In 2010/11 more students than ever were involved in College life. The number of NUS members grew for another year. We improved our methods of communicating electronically with students through the introduction of text messaging. We organised our largest ever student conference and held it at Grantham Guildhall. Apprenticeships If you are keen to enter the world of work but don’t want to stop studying then an Apprenticeship could be the answer. There are over 240,000 16 -18 year olds completing Apprenticeships.

So what exactly is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are worked based training programmes that provide the opportunity to study towards nationally recognised qualifications and gain hands-on industry experience. As an apprentice you get the best of both worlds by getting paid while you learn. Cash in your pocket and the chance to learn skills that employers want make Apprenticeships a very attractive option. Apprenticeships are designed to ensure you gain the fundamental skills and recognition you need in today’s demanding job market.

Course Code: PGA25020 Level: 2 Duration: 17 Weeks You need: No formal qualifications, although applicants will require a basic level of numeracy and communication skills. Method of assessment: Students are required to compile a portfolio of evidence and complete a variety of assignments.

Course Content This course is suitable if you plan to return to further education or want to update your CV. It is a flexible programme of study that aims to re-skill adult students. The course fulfils the requirements of a Pre-Access course and if you progress on to the Access programme you may be able to transfer some of your Level 2 credits to count towards your final Access certificate. This Pre-Access course is designed to be flexible enough to suit your needs, especially if you have personal, domestic or work responsibilities which you need to fit around your studies. We offer a wide range of subjects at AS and A Level. You would normally be expected to complete four AS Levels in your first year, followed by three A2 subjects in year two. In 2011 Grantham Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overall A Level pass rate was 96% with over 70% of students progressing on to University.

AAT Accounting Apprenticeship Accountants are in demand across all industry areas especially within the finance and banking sector. It takes a good head for business and a way with numbers to succeed in this field of work. This Apprenticeship allows study toward a recognised qualification whilst in an employed position. It is aimed at providing the necessary skills and qualifications required for starting a career in the accounting industry. Of course you won’t reach accountant status immediately. Most apprentices qualify as account assistants, account clerks, cashiers, credit control clerks, data input clerks, finance assistants, purchase ledger clerks or sales ledger clerks. Customer Service is a demanding but rewarding field of work where effective communication and a high level of interpersonal skills are required. The Apprenticeship framework has a range of learning options covering impression and image, delivery, handling problems, development and improvement.

Retail sales jobs can involve a broad spectrum of duties and activities depending on the product, service and merchandise offered by the employer. Because of the high levels of client interaction, successful sales assistants will need a combination of good negotiation skills and diplomacy.

Development includes: ■■ Communicating effectively with customers ■■ Communicating using customer service language ■■ Dealing with routine customer service issues ■■ Direct or indirect contact with external and internal customers ■■ Following the rules to deliver customer service ■■ Understanding of customer service. ICT SUCCESS & PROGRESSION Achievement rates on our BTEC courses are higher than the national figures. This year, 10 of our BTEC level 2 students achieved overall Merits and Distinctions progressing onto the level 3 course. Success rates on our level 3 BTEC courses are consistently high. This year 5 students completed the Extended Diploma with an overall grade of DDD, 2 students achieving a distinction in all 18 units. The Diploma group achieved above average grades with 2 students gaining a distinction in every unit. A good number of our students progress on to Higher Education to study a range of courses from Computer Games to Networking and Security at degree level. Our students tell us that the BTEC course that is provided at Grantham College prepares them well for their studies at Higher Education. CONSTRUCTION If a career as a Bricklayer, Carpenter, Painter & Decorator, Plasterer or Plumber interests you, our Construction courses are a valuable place to start. The Construction Department has workshops for each trade and dedicated IT facilities. A new plastering centre at Alma Park, which houses a dozen plastering bays as well as the new painting and decorating centre, which is based on Belton Lane gives students the opportunity to perfect their skills in a purpose built environment.

STUDENT VISITS This year brings the introduction of a new trips calendar. As well as visits to local hotels, restaurants and food providers and producers there will be a series of trips dedicated to each year group. First year students can look forward to a range of trips, which could include a visit to Ascot Racecourseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stunning new grandstand with their impressive restaurants, an overnight stay in London to experience the lively markets of Billingsgate and Borough or a chance to delve behind the doors of one of the capitals most prestigious hotels.

The second year group will be visiting Brussels at the invitation of a regional MEP. They will visit the European Parliament building, the Christmas market, the Chocolate Museum, an internationally recognised microbrewery, specialist pastry shops as well as a tour of the city. As part of the Leonardo programme, Level 3 students will spend two weeks work experience in the magnificently diverse city of Valencia. This is an invaluable opportunity to gain experience of catering in a bustling and vibrant city.

Teamwork and Leadership for Cadets All students will be expected to participate in additional subjects to further improve their skills of teamwork, communication and leadership. These subjects will be a mixture of topics from the various cadet force syllabus and is designed to further equip the students with practical skills to enter any one of the chosen services. Adventurous Training - Snowdon 2011 As part of the public services course all students will investigate the benefits of fitness and adventurous activities for the services. Once they have gained the relevant experience and knowledge, each group conducts a minimum of a week’s adventurous training package. Those students on the Extended Diploma will also be expected to take part in a variety of expedition packages. These adventurous training packages consist of hill walking, kayaking and mountain biking to name a few. In 2011 the level 3 course went to Snowdonia and completed activities that challenged everyone, regardless of their ability from cycling the Marin Trail to coasteering in the rough and cold seas around the Welsh Coast. All students had an “Amazing Time” learning new skills along the way. One student said, “Whilst in Snowdonia we took part in a range of activities in a mixture of weather conditions, we were soaked whilst on our day expedition! I felt tested and stretched throughout all I did and I enjoyed spending time away with my friends. I can’t wait to go again next year!”

Animal Care Apprenticeship This apprenticeship is perfect for anyone wishing to work with animals and is one of the most fulfilling roles within the land based sector. The Small Animal Care Centre is a new, purpose built and first-class facility comprising of individual species specific habitats. Table Tennis Grantham College launched the Table Tennis Academy in September 2002. This initiative, the first in the UK, allows both local and national players to take advantage of a variety of specialist training facilities at the College to improve their national ranking.

Grantham College is ideally equipped to provide the very best in table tennis coaching. The College benefits from a large sports hall in which the table tennis coaching takes place. In addition, there is also a competition standard Table Tennis Centre in Grantham.

Entry Requirements If you apply to the Table Tennis Academy you must be at least 16 years of age at the start of your programme and normally be already playing at junior county standard. Selection will, however, be based on individual assessment and academic ability.

After leaving school with no GCSEs over a grade D James did a variety of manual jobs. After a long spell of unemployment James decided to make a change in his life and do something he really loved. James knew that he had a passion for working with children and decided that he would love to become a teacher. Not knowing where to start, James came in to Grantham College to see Carol Dyer, the Careers Advisor who gave James all the steps he needed. James has since been studying at college and has completed the Step into the Future course and has now progressed on to the Access to Higher Education course.

Kellie Jones is 19 and studying on the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism. After leaving school, Kellie initially wanted to start a career in the hotel industry. However, she realised that she needed to gain more experience and qualifications, which is how she came to study Travel and Tourism at Grantham College. Kellie really enjoys the customer service and resort representative units and her favourite part of the course is acting out role plays and getting to use the replica airline facilities, ‘Grantham Air’. After discovering more about Travel and Tourism, Kelly has now changed her mind from working within the hotel sector and would now like to work as a Holiday rep and has applied to work for Virgin Airlines.

Lucy has been playing table tennis since she was 11 years old, she quickly realised a love for table tennis and joined a local club. Lucy has since represented her county and played at regional level. After wanting to carry on playing table tennis at a further level, Lucy’s coach recommended that the Grantham College Table Tennis Academy would be the perfect place for Lucy to develop as a player. Lucy now lives on the College Campus, and trains 2 hours a day as well as studying full time on the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness, ensuring academic and sporting success.

James is looking to go to University to study English Language and Psychology in order to achieve his ambition of becoming a primary school teacher. James says “Coming to Grantham College really has changed my life, I have finally been able to achieve my dream of going to University”

As well as her studies Kellie is also a representative for the StAR (Student Academic Representing) forum, which enables students to feedback their suggestions and comments about the College. Kellie comments “The star forum gives students a voice and the opportunity to make a change”.

“Grantham College has given me the opportunity to find out if I can really make it to a professional level. The coaches are really great and living in the College accommodation, means I’ve made loads of friends. Sometimes it can be hard work as we train a lot but it’s definitely worth it!” After coaching table tennis to children Lucy’s coach nominated her for being nominated by her coach ETTA Junior Volunteer of the year after. Lucy hopes to become a Table Tennis Coach.

Barry Started at Grantham College in 2008 doing the life skills course. Barry gained valuable experience working at cafe.com, our internet café which is operated by First Level Learning students. Here Barry was able to enhance his practical and employability skills in a real life setting. Barry then went on to the Transitions Xtra course where he continued to work at café.com and also at Little Gems Gift Shop. These experiences helped Barry to develop his confidence and also gain skills such as working on the till, which helped him gain a part time position at Scope charity shop. Barry now works at Grantham College for 2 hours every day delivering refreshments to the construction department.

Stacie is 16 and has just started the new BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Horse Management. Stacie has always loved horses and as well as competing in many local events has worked as a groom in a showing yard. Stacie commented “I really liked the content and structure of the course at Grantham College, and it’s something that isn’t offered in many colleges. We get to spend a whole day doing practical lessons too, which is my favourite part!” Stacie is also a member of the British Show Pony Society (BSPS) and takes part in their regional shows and training days. Stacie has also trained as a young judge.

Bartosz is originally from Poland, looking to improve his written and spoken English, Bartosz enrolled on Routes 2 Employment, this gave him the skills needed to progress to higher levels of education. During this year Bartosz also studied engineering where he excelled practically. This hard work was recognised by the Engineering department who nominated Bartosz for learner of the month, this led to Bartosz winning a laptop at the end of the year. Bartosz progressed to Level 2 Engineering and has through hard work completed the course and is now on a level 3 Engineering course for the 2011/12 academic year.

After finishing the course Stacie would like to go to University to study in Equine dentistry or physiotherapy and would like to work on a racing yard.

Bartosz is hoping to go to University next year and hopes to have a career in Maintenance and Operations.

Accommodation As a general guide, fees for College owned accommodation for 2011/2012, excluding meals, are shown below: Single Room - ÂŁ77.74 per week Twin Room - ÂŁ67.00 per week Accommodation is available on campus in Sedgwick Hall and Sedgwick Mews. 67 places are available and all rooms are furnished with most having their own en-suite facilities. Rent is payable termly. If you want to live off-campus, you should contact the Student Accommodation Manager who can help arrange alternative accommodation with carefully selected families or in privately rented accommodation close to the College. Travelling to College Secure storage for bicycles is provided and shower facilities are also available. Details of assistance with travel can be found on page 76.

Car Parking Limited student parking is available for blue badge holders before 4.30pm. After 4.30pm car parking spaces are available and provided free of charge to students and visitors. These are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Additional parking can be found at the public car park situated in Welham Street, close to the main campus. E-Learning Centre The e-Learning Centre has been designed to provide you with a state-of-the-art learning environment. The Centre has 31 open access PCs, all with Internet access, Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 10, with some available to book in advance. Black and white and colour printing facilities are also available. The Centre also lends laptops for use both on and off campus. In addition, there are 4 separate Skills seminar rooms, or ‘pods’, each equipped with between 15 and 24 PCs and a data projector. The Centre is open from 8.30am–5.00pm, Monday to Thursday, and 8.30am–4.30pm on Fridays.

The College has a well stocked library. Learning resources available to you include 30,000 books, a wide range of periodicals, DVDs, daily newspapers and an online catalogue system for research use and book reservations. You can also access the Internet via 10 computer workstations and use photocopying facilities and various online databases. Wireless Internet access is also available in the library and is also available at selected locations around the College. The Library is open from 8.30am - 6.00pm on Mondays, 8.30am - 7.15pm Tuesday Thursday and 8.30am - 4.30pm on Fridays.

Conference, Exhibition, & Refectory Facilities Conference, exhibition and classroom facilities are available for hire by the public at the main campus. Food & Drink A wide selection of meals are available from the main Refectory at very competitive prices. Snacks are available from vending machines throughout the College and also from Nixx, our shop and cafeteria. Nixx has seating for over 100 people and provides a choice of hot and cold snacks, including confectionery, paninis, bagels, salads and jacket potatoes, as well as stationery, cards, personal items and postage stamps. The College has an excellent range of sports facilities including a large indoor sports hall, all weather pitch and PowerSport, a supervised fitness suite, containing cardiovascular machines and weight training equipment. A new and exciting Enterprise initiative called ‘Little Gems’ gift shop was launched in November 2010. Personal Tutors On enrolment you will be allocated a Personal Tutor who is responsible for your welfare whilst you are at College. They will monitor and support you with your academic progress and provide help when necessary. This includes supplying references for employment or higher education.

Student Organisations The StAR Forum is a democratic organisation which presents your views to the College management. The Students’ Union represents the student population on College committees and organises your entertainment and fundraising.

Child care Stepping Stones Nursery is the partner nursery for Grantham College. The nursery is a short distance from the College grounds and provides full-time day care for children aged from birth to 11 years old. Stepping Stones aim is to provide a secure, caring and stimulating environment in small, homely, age-specific areas. Children are encouraged to progress at their own pace and to fulfil their potential in all areas of development. In August 2010 the nursery was graded Outstanding by OFSTED.

Nursery opening times are 7:30am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday. Nursery fees are charged at £3.85 per hour, although discounts are offered for Grantham College students. The nursery has an open door policy therefore parents are welcome to view the nursery at their convenience, appointments are not necessary. Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing Service If there are any personal problems, difficulties or concerns that you want to discuss, relating to College or home, you can access our confidential service. Appointments can be made by email counselling@grantham. ac.uk, via the Information, Advice, Guidance and Enrolment desk or by telephoning 01476 414413. No appointment is necessary at the drop in sessions on Tuesdays 12pm-2pm and Wednesdays 12pm-1pm.

Support Grantham College is committed to the principles of inclusive learning and the learning support service is designed to enable you to reach your full potential. Student Finance

We welcome applications throughout the year – and as many courses get oversubscribed, we advise you to apply as early as possible to avoid disappointment. If you need any advice or have specific concerns at any stage of the application process, you are welcome to make an appointment with the College Careers Adviser - please call our Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment Team on 0800 0521 577 and they will be happy to help. The team will also be happy to help with general enquiries.

Additional Costs Clothing & Equipment

We understand that studying at college may cause financial problems. We have a Student Finance department that provides both existing and prospective students with advice and guidance in relation to Student Finance, while also providing financial support to students studying at Grantham College.

To apply for a course with us, just follow these simple steps -

We will acknowledge receipt of your application via postcard and invite you to an interview with a relevant member of staff. At this interview you will be able to find out more about your chosen course, view the College’s facilities and talk to both staff and current students. Parents who wish to accompany you to interviews are most welcome

After your interview you may receive an offer of a place and a letter of confirmation with an “Acceptance Offer Slip”. We will provide updates on your application and invite you to an information session in June/July. Prior to the start of your course you will be sent joining instructions.

Full-Time Course Guide 2012/13

For some courses such as Hospitality & Catering and Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy you will require special clothes and equipment. You will be given details of what is required at interview. If your course includes physical education you will need appropriate sportswear.

Free Course Fees If you will be under 19 on 1 September 2012 the courses listed in this prospectus are FREE – there are no registration, tuition or examination fees. However, there will be a charge should you need to re-sit examinations. Tuition fees for learners aged 19 or over on 1 September 2012 will be charged in accordance with the Skills Funding Agency guidelines. Further details will be published on the Grantham College web site as soon as they are available. Tuition for some courses may be free of charge to people in receipt of certain means tested benefits or for those who are doing a first Level 2 or Level 3 qualification. Where fee remission is available, registration charges will still apply. Fees will be remitted in accordance with the SFA guidelines - Full Level 2, Full Level 3, Income based benefits etc, however the registration fee is payable by all. If you are claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance, contact the Student Finance Officer on 01476 400281 who will be pleased to advise you on how it is possible to study courses listed in this prospectus and still claim your benefit.

Overseas and Non-UK Students Please note the financial information provided in this course guide relates to students who have been normally resident in the UK or EU for at least three years. Different fee arrangements may apply to you if you fall outside this category or are resident overseas. We may be able to help you with support from the different funds available to us, depending on your age and personal circumstances. These include the 16-19 Bursary Fund, 19+ Further Education Discretionary Support Fund, Care to Learn, Student Travel Fund for those aged 16-18 who live out of area and Higher Education (HE) finance applications. If you are aged 16-19 and are in care, a care leaver or receive income support in your own right, you may be entitled to a bursary of up to £1200 per year. Residential Support Scheme The residential funding will support you if you wish to study courses at Level 2 or above. It is only available to you if your course is not available locally and is beyond daily travel in terms of either time or distance. This scheme is particularly appropriate for applicants to the Sports Academies. For specific information please telephone 0800 121 8989.

Travel Assistance If you are applying for further education programmes you must firstly apply to your Local Education Authority (LEA) for assistance with travel. If your LEA is unable to help there may be very limited support available from the College.

Higher Education Grantham College is an Associate College of the University of Bedfordshire. In conjunction with this University the College offers a range of part-time higher education courses including Higher National Certificates (HNCs), Higher National Diplomas (HNDs), Foundation Degrees (FDs), University Certificate in Professional Development (UCPD), and Teacher Education Qualifications.
