Sustained Support Whilst we aim to instil confidence and independence, you are never on your own at Grantham College. Every student is assigned a Personal Tutor with whom you can discuss your studies or share personal matters. The Careers Adviser and Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment Team are on hand should you need advice, whilst our experienced Learner Support Team is always available to offer guidance on other aspects of student life, be it finances, accommodation or travel.

Work Experience Grantham College offers the chance to apply your studies to real life via exciting work experience opportunities. Hospitality & Catering students train in the live public environment of the College’s Apple Tree Restaurant. Public Service students share training and facilities with the Army, Navy, and Royal Marines. Travel & Tourism students jet off to diverse destinations including Italy, Hungary and Disneyland Paris. Visual & Performing Arts students are the stars of an annual overseas trip, whilst Early Years students have the opportunity to experience nursery settings in Sweden.

Student Volunteers Throughout the year Grantham College students are involved in a variety of volunteering opportunities which not only add to their CVs, but also help to build strong links with the community. Recent projects have included assisting at Belton Horse Trials and taking part in the maintenance of local churchyards.

International Students Students have the opportunity to be exposed to other cultures thanks to our growing international associations. We regularly welcome students from the Far East, whilst Hungarian, Polish and Swedish students join us on work experience.

National Union Of Students As a student at Grantham College you can join the NUS and take advantage of their support and benefits. For £12 an NUS Extra card offers discounts with high street stores, local taxis and much more. Our Students’ Union also holds regular social and networking events and charity campaigns.

Learner Voice The learner is central to everything we do. In 2011/12 more students than ever were involved in College life. The number of NUS members grew for another year. We improved our methods of communicating electronically with students through the introduction of text messaging. We organised our largest ever student conference and held it at Grantham Guildhall. How do they work?

If you are keen to enter the world of work but don’t want to stop studying, then an Apprenticeship could be the answer. Over 457,000 people started Apprenticeships last year.

Apprenticeships are comprised of industry specified components known collectively as the “Framework”, all components being mandatory to achieve full completion. The majority of the training for your Apprenticeship would be delivered in your place of work, which would include planned visits from an occupationally competent assessor. You will attend college regularly, typically one day a week, to complete functional skills and the technical certificate for your chosen Apprenticeship framework. You will also have regular contact with an Apprenticeship Adviser who will closely monitor your progress and be on hand to provide you with any additional support you may need. After you have completed a Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship there may be an opportunity to progress onto a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship and Higher Apprenticeships.

So what exactly is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are work based training programmes that provide the opportunity to study towards nationally recognised qualifications and gain hands-on industry experience. As an apprentice you get the best of both worlds by getting paid while you learn. Cash in your pocket and the chance to learn skills that employers want make Apprenticeships a very attractive option. Apprenticeships are designed to ensure you gain the fundamental skills and recognition you need in today’s demanding job market.

Access TO Higher Education If you need a flexible and confidence-enhancing course to get you back into education, then our highly successful Step into the Future and Access to Higher Education courses are for you. A variety of teaching and assessment methods will prepare you for your degree. Hayley Samways Access Enrolling on the Access to Higher Education course was the first step for Hayley getting back into education as she would like to go onto university to study midwifery. Hayley describes the course as being very positive as well as being a real confidence booster and making new friends. When Hayley started the course her youngest child was just 10 weeks old but with support from the staff and planning her time for the assignments she has successfully completed the course and looks forward to a new challenge.

Course Code: FGA25040 Level: 3 Duration: 1 year You need: Applicants will be assessed as to the appropriateness of starting on Access to HE or Step into The Future Method of Assessment: Coursework

Course Content This course is suitable if you plan to return to further education or want to update your CV. It is a flexible programme of study that aims to re-skill adult students. The course fulfils the requirements of a Pre-Access course and if you progress on to the Access programme you may be able to transfer some of your Level 2 credits to count towards your final Access certificate. This Pre-Access course is designed to be flexible enough to suit your needs, especially if you have personal, domestic or work responsibilities which you need to fit around your studies. ANIMAL CARE Our Animal Care courses can lead to a number of different and interesting careers working with animals, including working for animal charities, in zoos, as a veterinary nurse and more. You will have the opportunity to work with a range of small animals including birds, reptiles and rabbits. Our brand-new Animal Care centre is the perfect place to learn about how to care for these animals in a realistic habitat, where they feel comfortable. This will allow you to get real hands-on experience in this ever-changing field.

Rebecca Holland Animal Care A desire to work with animals is what attracted Rebecca to the Level 2 Diploma course in Animal Care. Learning new information and skills and then being able to put those skills into practice is what Rebecca likes most about the course as well as being able to visit The Deep (an Aquarium in Hull) and a zoo on educational trips. Rebecca has also undertaken work experience whilst on the course to help her gain further knowledge about the industry and to progress onto the Level 3 course.

Animal Care Apprenticeship This Apprenticeship is perfect for anyone wishing to work with animals and is one of the most fulfilling roles within the land based sector. The qualification will form part of the Apprenticeship framework for animal care. It is a work related, competencebased qualification. It reflects the skills and knowledge needed to do the job effectively and shows that the learner is competent in the area of work. The qualification offered lies within the animal care and welfare route. Skills developed will include: ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■

NPTC City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma In Land Based Studies (Animal Care) Course Code: FGB46001 Level: 1 Duration: 1 year You need: 2 GCSEs F or above with one in English, a sound knowledge of both written and spoken English and an interest or previous experience with animals is desirable Methods of Assessment: Continual assessment and portfolio/online test Course Content Level 1 is a one year programme reflecting the skills and knowledge needed to carry out a job effectively under supervision. Ruth Weston Animal Care Lecturer Ruth grew up on a farm with a variety of animals from livestock to furries, but her passion is dogs. After further study Ruth gained a job as a technician in charge of Farm Animals within Animal Care at a college in Surrey. Her experience and knowledge quickly led to her delivering lectures. Ruth has since been a lecturer over the years in four different colleges before joining Grantham College just as it started to offer Animal Care. Ruth says “By being involved from the beginning it has meant that the team and I have been able to share our knowledge and expertise regarding the facilities and animals that the students will work with.”

Course Content A one year programme providing knowledge and understanding to support effective and efficient working practices. It will promote and encourage good working practices in relation to a range of animal care skills and develop competent practical skills that will support those seeking a career in the animal care industry. The Small Animal Care Centre is a new, purpose built and first-class facility comprising of individual species-specific habitats. The habitats provide a realistic environment allowing for animals to live and flourish, supported by learners who actively promote the welfare needs of the animals. Housed within the centre is a wide range of rabbits, rodents, reptiles including boa and milk snakes, lizards and tortoises, amphibians, tropical and cold water fish. There is an aviary with colour fed canaries, finch and quail.

ART & DESIGN The Creative Industries is one of the fastest growing areas of employment and entrepreneurship in the country. We only have to remember the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in London to see the vast array of creative, technical, professional and support roles essential for events like this which take place all the time. We have brilliant staff who will help you develop and expand your skills and abilities as a creative practitioner or technician within the Creative Industries. In our state-of-the-art three-storey Arts Centre we will support and guide you as you build the understanding, knowledge, skills and confidence to explore and realise your ideas.

BTEC Level 1 Certificate Art & Design & Media (Routes to Employability) Course Code: FGA25151 Level: 1 Duration: You need: There are no formal entry requirements for this course but applicants must demonstrate a real interest in the subject and satisfactory references are required Method of Assessment: Assignments and portfolio of work Course Content This Level 1 Art & Design route offers a basic introduction to art and design. On this course you will begin to develop an understanding of the work of artists and crafts people. Through your own work you will also begin to explore line, colour and form during practical workshop sessions. You will be introduced to a variety of materials and methods and are encouraged to explore and experiment with visual ideas and techniques. You will also develop presentational skills and be asked to give evaluations of your work and the work of others.

BTEC Level 2 Diploma Art & Design Course Code: FGA05151 Level: 2 Duration: 1 year You need: 3 GCSEs (Grade D or above), or a relevant and appropriate Level 1 course, or an appropriate equivalent, a real interest in the subject and satisfactory references are required Method of Assessment: Assignments and portfolio of work Course Content The BTEC Diploma in Art & Design Level 2 provides a more in-depth introduction to art and design than the Level 1 course. It is suitable for those who have a real talent and who are sure that they would like to progress their understanding and skills in art and design. On this course you will acquire an understanding of the work of artists and crafts people. Through your own work, you will also develop an understanding of line, colour and form during practical workshop sessions. You will be introduced to additional materials and methods not covered on the Level 1 course and encouraged to explore, experiment with and discuss visual language. AS & A Levels With a wide range of subjects on offer including the traditional English, Maths, Sciences and slightly less traditional Anthropology, Law and Sociology, you would normally be expected to complete four AS Levels in your first year, followed by three A2 subjects in year two. Young Enterprise Area Final Competition On 26 March, Young Enterprise Companies from Grantham College attended the area final at Totemic House in Grantham. The two companies, Rhythm and Band and Sweet Tooth are made up of college students who have successfully set up their own companies from scratch, developed a product and then sold this product at trade fairs which were held throughout the year. At the area final each company had the opportunity to showcase their product and give a presentation about their business and the highs and lows of running a company.

EQUINE Working in partnership with two local riding schools, our courses will give you the knowledge and practical experience required to work in this exciting and challenging industry. You will learn about the care of the horse and study horse behaviour and handling. You will benefit from expert tuition throughout your course. The Paddocks Riding Centre at Hough-on-the-Hill have excellent facilities including several outdoor arenas and catering for both full and part time liveries whilst The Haven at Saxilby boasts 6.5 acres, 10 stables and a fenced mĂŠnage. Emma Dellaway Hairdressing A love for hairdressing was the reason for Emma to enrol on the Level 1 Hairdressing course, progressing up to Level 3. Since starting at the college Emma has attended the salon exhibition, taken part in the Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Oreal training day, completed a barbering technical day and a spray tanning course. She is now fully qualified and is working part time in a salon. Learning new skills, working independently and the challenges at every level were what Emma liked most about the course.

Hospitality & Catering Apprenticeships You would need to be in relevant paid employment and working at least thirty hours a week to undertake this Apprenticeship. To reflect the many career options on offer for those working in this sector, this Apprenticeship has several pathways. If you’re interested in working ‘front of house’, you could train as waiting staff and learn how to serve customers, or train in drinks service – one of the fastest growing sub-sectors. Apprentices interested in cookery could either train as a chef in a restaurant, or learn how to cook on a large scale for institutions like the NHS or armed forces. You could work in all sorts of kitchens, from fine-dining to chain restaurants through to gastro-pubs. There are specialist pathways to cover all kinds of fare, including Bangladeshi, Thai, Chinese, and Indian. Apprentices with an interest in the hospitality side of the sector could be working in a hotel reception area, helping to run a B&B or youth hostel, or keeping a hotel clean and tidy. STUDENT VISITS Following on from a new calendar of trips for students last year, this year’s intake will continue visits to local hotels, restaurants, food providers and producers as well as a series of trips dedicated to each year group. First year students can look forward to a range of trips, which could include a visit to Ascot Racecourse’s stunning new grandstand with their impressive restaurants, an overnight stay in London to experience the lively markets of Billingsgate and Borough or a chance to delve behind the doors of one of the capitals most prestigious hotels. The second year group will be visiting Brussels at the invitation of a regional MEP. They will visit the European Parliament building, the Christmas market, the Chocolate Museum, an internationally recognised micro-brewery, specialist pastry shops, as well as a tour of the city. As part of the Leonardo programme, Level 3 students will spend two week’s work experience in the magnificently diverse city of Valencia. This is an invaluable opportunity to gain experience of catering in a bustling and vibrant city environment.

Poppy Macky Public Services Poppy has always dreamed of joining the police service so the Public Services course was the obvious choice to help her achieve the dream. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is a charity set up to support young adults in order for them to develop new qualities and skills whilst taking part in different activities. Achieving an Award will give you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to universities. You can make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime. You may already be undertaking voluntary work that may be recognised by the award scheme. The College has received a grant of just over £6,500 from the National Lottery, which has enabled the Public Services Department to buy the equipment required to support 16 students on an expedition at any given time.

Adventurous Training TRIPS As part of the public services course all students will investigate the benefits of fitness and adventurous activities for the services. Once they have gained the relevant experience and knowledge, each group conducts a minimum of a week’s adventurous training package. Those students on the Extended Diploma will also be expected to take part in a variety of expedition packages. These adventurous training packages consist of hill walking, kayaking and mountain biking to name a few. In 2012 the Level 3 students went to Snowdonia and completed activities that challenged everyone, regardless of their ability from cycling the Marin Trail to coasteering in the rough and cold seas around the Welsh Coast. All students had an “Amazing Time” learning new skills along the way. One student said, “Whilst in Snowdonia we took part in a range of activities in a mixture of weather conditions, we were soaked whilst on our day expedition! I felt tested and stretched throughout all I did and I enjoyed spending time away with my friends. I can’t wait to go again next year!”

Helen Whitworth Forensic Science Having had her family Helen decided she wanted to return to education to keep her mind active, do something different and enrol on a course that would gain her new skills â&#x20AC;&#x201C; so she enrolled on the BTEC Applied Science course. Practical aspects of the course included mock autopsies as well as a trip to Lincoln University to use their equipment and The Deep in Hull. Whilst studying Helen undertook several work placements including working at the Phoenix school for 4 months and working with people with social or mental difficulties â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all of this has helped Helen gain a triple distinction and gain a place at the University of Leeds on a Mental Health degree.

Sean Hannigan Sport Sean has recently completed the Level 3 Sports Development, Fitness & Coaching course where he described the course as being exciting, physical and fun. When asked what Sean liked most about the course he said ‘Getting to do a vast amount of different sports, some of which I have never tried before and getting to design my own games and fitness circuits.’ Sean would highly recommend the course as he says the tutors are ‘spot on’ with advice as they all have different specialised backgrounds with a vast amount of knowledge.

PowerSport Health & Fitness Centre is open to the general public and all students attending courses of at least 450 hours per academic year. The fitness team can devise personal exercise plans, in conjunction with regular aerobic testing and body fat monitoring, to ensure you achieve the ‘New You’. ALEX PERRY TABLE TENNIS COACH Alex Perry was an England senior international player for 15 years, winning four Commonwealth gold medals and 13 national titles. He competed in the Swedish national league for six years. He then graduated from the University of Nottingham with a First Class Honours Degree in Management Studies where he then went on to work as a National team coach with the Olympic Performance programme. Alex was then selected for the UK Sport “Elite Coach Programme” in 2007. Alex is currently Head coach of our Table Tennis Academy and Curriculum Manager for Academies and Recreational Sport. As an ETTA Level 3 coach Alex has been working with the national team for three years and is head coach at the East Midlands high performance centre and current England Selector for youth squads.

Table Tennis ACADEMY Grantham College launched the Table Tennis Academy in September 2002. This initiative, the first in the UK, allows both local and national players to take advantage of a variety of specialist training facilities at the College to improve their national ranking.

LAURENCE SWEENEY TABLE TENNIS Laurence decided to study at Grantham College, on a BTEC SubDiploma in Sport as it meant he was also able to join the Table Tennis Academy. During his time in the academy Laurence has become a Junior Derby four star runner up, National Junior Quarter finalist, 7th in the Junior top 14 tournament and has won two banded events at two different senior Grand Prix. Once Laurence has finished his studies he hopes to play table tennis abroad.

Grantham College is ideally equipped to provide the very best in table tennis coaching. The College benefits from a large sports hall in which the table tennis coaching takes place. In addition, there is also a competition standard Table Tennis Centre in Grantham.

Entry Requirements If you apply to the Table Tennis Academy you must be at least 16 years of age at the start of your programme and normally be already playing at junior county standard. Selection will, however, be based on individual assessment and academic ability.

TRAVEL & TOURISM Our Travel & Tourism courses strive to offer a great combination of taught lessons and practical training, either in our full-scale replica aircraft â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Grantham Air â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including baggage handling, check-in and security area, or through external visits. This year some of our Travel & Tourism students were able to visit Rimini in Italy, where they gained valuable experience working in a range of hotels as well as visits to Virgin Atlantic training centre, Liverpool Tate Modern, The Lowry Centre and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Grantham College also has an excellent network of professional contacts, including travel agents, hotels and airlines. Working closely with these means you can gain an even greater understanding of what it is like to work in this busy and exciting industry.

Tom Moorhouse Travel & Tourism Having studied the airline course Tom progressed onto the BTEC Extended Diploma in Travel & Tourism Level 3 where he enjoyed putting into practice the skills he had learned in the classroom and onboard the mock air cabin. Tom undertook a 2 week work experience placement in Rimini, Italy where he worked on reception at a hotel. Tom said the experience was invaluable, he got to see how a hotel is run overseas and learned some Italian whilst there.

Accommodation As a general guide, fees for College owned accommodation for 2013/2014, excluding meals, will be available from January 2013. Accommodation is available on campus in Sedgwick Hall and Sedgwick Mews. 67 places are available and all rooms are furnished with most having their own en-suite facilities. Rent is payable termly. Our accommodation was inspected by OFSTED in March 2012 and graded Outstanding. If you want to live off-campus, you should contact the Student Accommodation Manager who can help arrange alternative accommodation with carefully selected families or in privately rented accommodation close to the College. Travelling to College Secure storage for bicycles is provided and shower facilities are also available.

Car Parking Limited student parking is available for blue badge holders before 4.30pm. After 4.30pm car parking spaces are available and provided free of charge to students and visitors. These are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Additional parking can be found at the public car park situated in Welham Street, close to the main campus. Bicycle storage is available for students on the main campus.

Library The College has a well stocked library. Learning resources available to you include 30,000 books, a wide range of periodicals, DVDs, daily newspapers and an online catalogue system for research use and book reservations. You can also access the internet via 10 computer workstations and use photocopying facilities and various online databases. Wireless internet access is also available in the library and is also available at selected locations around the College. The Library is open from 8.30am - 6.00pm on Mondays, 8.30am - 7.15pm Tuesday - Thursday and 8.30am 4.30pm on Fridays.

E-Learning Centre The e-Learning Centre has been designed to provide you with a state-of-the-art learning environment. The Centre has 31 open access PCs, all with Internet access, Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 10, with some available to book in advance. Black and white and colour printing facilities are also available. The Centre also lends laptops for use both on and off campus. In addition, there are 4 separate Skills seminar rooms, or ‘pods’, each equipped with between 15 and 24 PCs and a data projector. The Centre is open from 8.30am–5.00pm, Monday to Thursday, and 8.30am–4.30pm on Fridays.

Conference, Exhibition, & Refectory Facilities Conference, exhibition and classroom facilities are available for hire by the public at the main campus. Facilities Food & Drink Refectory & Nixx A wide selection of meals are available from the main Refectory at very competitive prices. Snacks are available from vending machines throughout the College and also from Nixx our shop and cafeteria. Nixx has seating for over 100 people and provides a choice of hot and cold snacks, including confectionery, panini, bagels, salads and jacket potatoes, as well as stationery, cards, personal items and postage stamps. Evening meals are available from 4.30pm Tuesday-Thursday. Apple Tree Restaurant Students, staff and the general public are also welcome to dine in the College’s Apple Tree restaurant (open for lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, Early Bird Grill Night on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Fine Dining on Wednesday evening) which is run by the Hospitality & Catering Department. Little Gems

The College has an excellent range of sports facilities including a large indoor sports hall, all weather pitch and PowerSport, a supervised fitness suite, containing cardiovascular machines and weight training equipment. This facility is also open to the public at reasonable rates. You also have the opportunity to represent the College in a wide range of sports including basketball, football, hockey, netball, rugby and Boccia.

A new and exciting Enterprise initiative called ‘Little Gems’ gift shop was launched in November 2010. The shop is situated in the main reception area at Grantham College and the main aim is to give learners with both physical and learning disabilities an opportunity to experience the ‘World of Work’ in a real retail environment.

Premier Hair & Beauty Salon Open to students and the public, Premier Hair & Beauty Salon is L’Oreal and Eve Taylor accredited and offers a full range of very reasonably priced services, as well as high-quality hair and beauty products to suit everyone. Facilities Personal Tutors On enrolment you will be allocated a Personal Tutor who is responsible for your welfare whilst you are at College. They will monitor and support you with your academic progress and provide help when necessary. This includes supplying references for employment or Higher Education.

Student Organisations The StAR Forum is a democratic organisation which presents your views to the College management. The Students’ Union represents the student population on College committees and organises your entertainment and fundraising.

Childcare Stepping Stones Nursery is the partner nursery for Grantham College. The nursery is a short distance from the College grounds and provides full-time day care for children aged from birth to 11 years old. Stepping Stones aim to provide a secure, caring and stimulating environment in small, homely, age-specific areas. Children are encouraged to progress at their own pace and to fulfil their potential in all areas of development. In August 2010 the nursery was graded Outstanding by OFSTED. Nursery opening times are 7.30am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday. Nursery fees are charged at £4.35 per hour, although discounts are offered for Grantham College students. The nursery has an open door policy therefore parents are welcome to view the nursery at their convenience, appointments are not necessary. Grantham College has a statutory and moral duty to ensure that the College functions with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults receiving education and training at the College. The governing body is committed to ensuring that the College provides a safe environment for students to learn in, identifies children and vulnerable adults who are suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm, and takes appropriate action to see that such children and vulnerable adults are kept safe, both at home and at the College. To this end Grantham College has a Safeguarding Policy which sets out the steps we take to protect these individuals and the procedures we would use to deal with any issues. For some courses such as Hospitality & Catering and Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy you will require special clothes and equipment. You will be given details of what is required at interview. If your course includes physical education you will need appropriate sportswear.

Student Finance

Free Course Fees

We understand that studying at college may cause financial problems. We have a Student Finance department that provides both existing and prospective students with advice and guidance in relation to Student Finance, while also providing financial support to students studying at Grantham College.

If you will be under 19 as of 1 September 2013 the courses listed in this prospectus may be FREE – there are no registration, tuition or examination fees. However, there will be a charge should you need to re-sit examinations.

We may be able to help you with support from the different funds available to us, depending on your age and personal circumstances. These include the 16-19 Bursary Fund, 19+ Further Education Discretionary Support Fund, Care to Learn, Student Travel Fund for those aged 16-18 who live out of area and Higher Education (HE) finance applications.

Tuition fees for learners aged 19 or over as of 1 September 2013 will be charged in accordance with the Skills Funding Agency guidelines. Further details will be published on the Grantham College web site as soon as they are available. Tuition for some courses may be free of charge to people in receipt of certain means tested benefits or for those in certain age categories who are undertaking a first Level 2 or Level 3 qualification.

If you are aged 16-19 and are in care, a care leaver or receive income support in your own right, you may be entitled to a bursary of up to £1200 per year. Residential Support Scheme The residential funding will support you if you wish to study courses at Level 2 or Level 3. It is only available to you if your course is not available locally and is beyond daily travel in terms of either time or distance. AWards Our Awards At the end of each academic year Grantham College celebrates the success of its students at the Annual Awards Ceremony. Each curriculum area chooses their own winners based upon student attendance, progression, achievement and extracurricular activities. The ceremony is attended by award winners, their families, college corporation members, special guests and guest speakers. It truly is a fantastic night to share your success and be proud of your time at Grantham College!

Marketing Helpers Throughout the year the college holds several open evenings and attends events in the community (e.g. Grantham Carnival) which require the help of our students. The marketing team are looking for current students who are willing to give up a few hours to help promote the college, talk to potential students about college life and give tours of the facilities during our open evenings.
