Today’s BTECs – Seeing You Go Further BTECs are known to increase student engagement, enable students to progress, develop employability skills and add value and variety to your studies. Grantham College has been offering BTEC qualifications for over 25 years in a wide range of subject areas taught by sector experienced staff in well-equipped classrooms. What is a BTEC? BTECs (Business and Technology Education Council) are vocational and work-related courses, designed to accommodate the needs of employers and allow students to progress to Further and Higher Education. A BTEC takes a practical approach to learning, without overlooking any of the important theory on the subject. Why Study a BTEC? BTECs are recognised by a large number of companies across a wide range of industries – as well as being developed

in partnership with industry representatives so all employer and student needs are met. If you are not fond of taking exams and find the pressure causes you to under-perform, a BTEC will allow you to undertake a number of units for which you will present evidence, based on real-life work and studies. This means you can demonstrate your skills and knowledge within practical situations rather than sweating it out in an exam hall. What BTEC Subjects Are Available? Grantham College offers a wide range of BTECs in: • • • • • • • • • • •

Art & Design Business Early Years Graphics Health & Social Care IT Performing Arts Public Services Science Sport Travel & Tourism.

FOCUS ON BTECs 12

How Many Hours Does it Take to Study a BTEC? 180–1,080, depending on if you are studying for a Level 2 BTEC First Certificate (35-week qualification) or a Level 3 BTEC National Diploma (2-year qualification).

What Are the Different BTEC Levels? Entry to Development and Professional Development qualifications (Levels 4–8); see page 14 for further Qualifications information.

How Long Does a BTEC Take to Complete? One to two years, depending on whether you study for the course full time or part time.

How Many UCAS Points Do You Get with a BTEC? If you take a qualification at Level 3, you can earn points on the ‘UCAS Tariff’ for entry into Higher Education. BTECs can earn you equivalent points to AS and A Levels. For example, a BTEC National Diploma with overall three Merit (M) grades has 240 UCAS points (one A Level with an ‘A’ grade has 120 UCAS points).

Do All Universities Accept BTEC Qualifications? BTEC students can often be better prepared in terms of the independent studying that’s required at degree level, due to the portfolio-based nature of BTEC courses. The time management and self-organisation you’ll pick up on a BTEC course can also give you an added edge. BTEC students have the experience of real-life practical tasks and work placements. This will make you stand out from students studying A Levels, who don’t usually have this element as part of their course.

95%

of universities and colleges in the UK accept BTEC students

ArT & Design The Arts have existed for centuries and encompass history, culture and traditions not only in the UK but worldwide. We are surrounded by objects and artefacts that have been created by someone with an art and design background; almost everything we see, experience, wear, live in and buy has started as a creative idea, developed then produced into something that we use and enjoy. The Arts can be understood, studied and provide valuable making skills which can give you the capacity to contribute to how we live and understand the world around us. All of our Art & Design students are guided and mentored by an array of arts lecturers who have

worked in the creative industries and have real experience of how an arts education can lead to successful employment. Areas of expertise include Graphic Design, Packaging Design and Furniture Design in London, Curating international Art exhibitions as well as exhibiting their own work. Facilities in the Arts Centre allow you to specialise in a range of disciplines, increasing your skill base and potential. We are constantly engaged in ‘live projects’ within the local community, providing our students with a true vocational experience and giving them the confidence to explore and realise their creative potential.

ApprenTiceships An Apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to work for a real employer, while getting paid at least the National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice. You will gain recognised, industry focused qualifications, and gain valuable workplace skills and experience. Anyone living in England, over 16 years old and not in full-time education can apply to be an apprentice. You can find more information at: www.apprenticeships.gov.uk So What Exactly is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes that provide the opportunity to study towards nationally recognised qualifications and gain hands-on industry experience. As an apprentice you get the best of both worlds by getting paid while you learn. Cash in your pocket and the chance to learn skills that employers want make Apprenticeships a very attractive option. Apprenticeships are designed to ensure you gain the fundamental skills and recognition you need in today’s demanding job market. How Do They Work? Apprenticeships comprise industry specified components known collectively as the ‘Framework’, all components being mandatory to achieve full completion. Current ‘Frameworks’ are gradually being replaced with the new Apprenticeship ‘Standards’. The majority of the training for your Apprenticeship would be delivered in your place of work, which would include planned visits from an occupationally competent assessor. Your attendance at college will depend on your programme of learning but typically is one day a week, and some programmes require block release weeks too. Again, depending on your programme and prior achievements, you will undertake Maths, English (and possibly ICT) Functional Skills up to Level 2, in addition to theory and practical classes.

1. To find a course simply look under the appropriate curriculum area, e.g. 2D CAD will be under Engineering, Counselling Concepts under Health & Social Care. 2. Then search for the title of the course you are interested in in the next column. At this point you may also want to look in the ‘Qualification’ column as we may offer the same (or a very similar) course but at a different level. If you are unsure which level would best suit you, refer to the Qualifications Guide on page 14. 3. When applying for a course, you will need to ensure you have already gained certain qualifications as a prerequisite to study (this is for all our Full-Time courses and some of our Part-Time courses). These are listed in the ‘Entry Requirements’ column with the code to the left. HOW TO APPLY: There are several ways in which you can apply: 1. Online – go to www.grantham.ac.uk and fill out an application form online. Once completed you will receive an email to say your application has been submitted and we shall be in touch soon. 2. In person – come in and pick up a paper application form and fill it in while you are here or take it away and post it back to us. We are open Monday 8.30am–6.00pm, Tuesday–Thursday 8.30am–9.00pm and Friday 8.30am–6.00pm during term time and Monday–Friday 8.30am–6.00pm during half-term holidays. 3. At an event – whether at an open event, school event or county show we’ll always have paper application forms for you to fill out as well as offering help should you need it. 5 GCSEs A*–C 2 GCSEs A*–D Higher Education Qualification

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW: APPLICATIONS & FINANCE We welcome applications throughout the year – and as many courses get oversubscribed, we advise you to apply as early as possible to avoid disappointment. If you need any advice or have specific concerns at any stage of the application process, you are welcome to make an appointment with the College Careers Adviser. Please call our Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment Team on 01476 400200 and they will be happy to help. The team will also be happy to help with general enquiries. STUDENT FINANCE We understand that studying at college may cause financial problems. We have a Student Finance department that provides both existing and prospective students with advice and guidance in relation to Student Finance, while also providing financial support to students studying at Grantham College. We may be able to help you with support from the different funds available to us, depending on your age and personal circumstances. These include the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, 16–19 Bursary Fund, 19+ Further Education Discretionary Support Fund, Care to Learn – childcare for students under the age of 20 at the start of their course, Student Travel Fund for those aged 16– 18 who live out of the area, and Higher Education (HE) finance applications. If you are aged 16–19 and are in care, a care leaver or receive income support in your own right, you may be entitled to a bursary of up to £1,200 per year. Please 124

let us know if that applies to you as soon as possible! For further information please contact Jo Bowman, the Student Finance Officer, on 01476 400281. FREE MEALS Eligible students aged 16–18 who elect to come to college to further their education will now be able to access free meals at college, just as they would at a school sixth form. For further information contact Jo Bowman, the Student Finance Officer, at jbowman@grantham.ac.uk or on 01476 400281. RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT SCHEME The residential funding will support you if you wish to study courses at Level 2 or Level 3 and are under 19 from 1 September 2016. It is only available to you if your course is not available locally and is beyond daily travel in terms of either time or distance. This scheme is particularly appropriate for applicants to the Sports Academies. For further information please telephone 01476 400281. TRAVEL ASSISTANCE If you are applying for Further Education programmes, you must firstly apply to your Local Education Authority (LEA) for assistance with travel. If your LEA is unable to help, there may be support available from the college. ADDITIONAL COSTS For some courses such as Hospitality & Catering and Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy you will require special clothes and equipment. You will be given details of what is required at interview. If your course includes physical education you will need appropriate sportswear.

FREE COURSE FEES If you will be under 19 as of 1 September 2016, the courses listed in this prospectus may be FREE – there are no registration, tuition or examination fees. However, there will be a charge should you need to re-sit examinations. Tuition fees for students aged 19 or over as of 1 September 2016 will be charged in accordance with the Skills Funding Agency guidelines. Further details will be published on the Grantham College website as soon as they are available. Tuition for some courses may be free of charge to people in receipt of certain means-tested benefits or for those in certain age categories who are working towards or undertaking a first Level 2 or Level 3 qualification. If you are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, contact the Student Finance Officer on 01476 400281, who will be pleased to advise you on how it is possible to study courses listed in this prospectus and still claim your benefit. OVERSEAS AND NON-UK STUDENTS Please note that financial information provided in this course guide relates to students who have been normally resident in the UK or EU for at least three years. Different fee arrangements may apply to you if you fall outside this category or are resident overseas. Contact the Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment Team on 01476 400200 for specific advice and guidance. COLLEGE POLICIES SAFEGUARDING Grantham College has a statutory and moral duty to ensure that the college functions with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults receiving

education and training at the college. The governing body is committed to ensuring that the college provides a safe environment for students to learn in, identifies children and vulnerable adults who are suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm, and takes appropriate action to see that such children and vulnerable adults are kept safe, both at home and at the college. To this end, Grantham College has a Safeguarding Policy which sets out the steps we take to protect these individuals and the procedures we would use to deal with any issues. A copy of the Safeguarding Policy is available from the Assistant Principal, Services for Students, on 01476 404376, who will provide any further information you may require. DISABILITY STATEMENT The college is committed to providing education and training for all sections of the community. A full copy of the College Disability Statement is available upon request from the Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment Team. EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES & DIVERSITY The college is committed to equality of opportunity for all students irrespective of race, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, age, religion or belief. We expect everyone who comes to our college to be able to participate fully and achieve their full potential in a safe and supportive environment. If you have learning difficulties, a variety of facilities are provided so that you can take part in the full range of courses.

OUR AIM IS SIMPLY TO PROVIDE THE BEST FOOD AND SERVICE

One of Grantham’s best kept secrets is the Apple Tree restaurant, which, incidentally, also has one of the finest views of the town. The restaurant is situated on the top floor of the main block at Grantham College, and is operated by Hospitality & Catering students. We are open to the public for lunches four days a week (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri) and for dinner on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In addition, the restaurant can be booked for private functions, celebrations, meetings, fundraisers or training events.

Booking is essential and can be made by visiting the restaurant in person or by telephoning 01476 400227.

AT GRANTHAM COLLEGE

Refectory at Grantham College is THE ideal venue for any wedding reception, birthday party, charity event or sports presentation – in fact any event which requires a great space, flexibility, plenty of car parking and everything on one level. There’s a well-stocked, newly refurbished licensed bar with drinks at great prices, the choice to bring your own catering or take advantage of the many buffet menu options in-house.

Refectory is licensed for entertainment with a new stage for 2015 available to hire. We can even suggest bands and discos with whom we have worked.

For more information and to request a brochure please call Refectory on 01476 400222 or see our Facebook page www.facebook.com/refectorygrantham
