Excellent Facilities There are many facilities available to students at Grantham College. From purchases of food and drink in our bustling café, Nixx, to burning off the calories in the Power Sport Gym. The Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy Salon is open to students and the general public, where a full range of treatments is available at reasonable prices. Students and the general public can also choose to have a sumptuous meal in the Witham Room restaurant on the top floor most lunchtimes and two evenings a week.
IQER- Top Marks Grantham College has been awarded the highest possible result for the quality of it’s Higher Education provision following a recent review by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). QAA, similar to Ofsted but for University level courses, introduced a new method of inspection called IQER, which is specifically devised to assess how Further Education colleges meet their responsibilities for Higher
Education and maintain the level of the University type courses. Grantham College was successful in all areas which included academic standards, quality of learning and accuracy of public information.
Accommodation on Site Accommodation is available on campus in Sedgewick hall and Sedgewick Mews. 67 places are available and all rooms are furnished with most having their own en-suite facilities. Within short distance of the town centre they are based in an ideal location.
Small Class Size Our small class sizes of between 12 and 15 students mean that you will always get lots of contact time with staff; this also offers a more personal approach to learning in an environment where you matter.
Personal Tutors and Support All students who enrol onto a course are allocated a personal tutor. They will monitor and support you with your academic progress and provide help when necessary. There are also a wide range of support services available to you whilst studying at Grantham College. These include learning support tailored to your needs, careers advice and guidance, counselling, mental health worker and a nurse on site.

HNC/HND Art & Design Level: 4/5 Duration: HNC 1 year/HND 2 years You need: This is a course which will suit students who have an interest in a wide range of Visual Art specialisms and will provide opportunities for learners to focus on the development of higher skills in an art, craft and design context. Method of Assessment Assessment is through continuous coursework, such as practical projects, visual and oral presentations and written assignments. Course Content The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is the first year of the two year Diploma (HND) course and can be taken as a standalone qualification or as the first year of a two year programme. It comprises a wide range of creative units. The course will introduce you to a broad range of practical skills in both two and three dimensions and develops a critical awareness of the historical, contextual and social issues relevant to contemporary art and design practice. The first year of the course, the HNC, is made up of a variety of modules including: ■■ Visual Communication in Art and Design ■■ Ideas Generation and Development ■■ Professional Practice ■■ Project design, implementation and evaluation. The course will enable you to explore your own individual creative approach to identifying a professional pathway towards two dimensional
and three dimensional creative visual arts practice. This will be supported through live projects, competitions, visiting speakers and trips which will be set to inspire and promote a broad understanding, along with essential links to the creative industries. The second year of the programme aims to give you the opportunity to specialise in a particular area based on the specialisms of staff and facilities here at Grantham. Opportunities The course aims to provide opportunities for students to gain a nationally recognised qualification to enter employment or progress to higher education such as a full-time degree in art, craft and design or related area. There are a wide variety of careers available in the creative industries and this is a growth area nationally. Traditional careers include professional artist, freelance designer in industrial/ product design, graphic design, packaging design, glass design, exhibition design, interior and spatial design, illustrator and photographer.

HND in Business Level: 5 Duration: 2 year full-time /part-time options are available You need: To have attained a minimum 120 UCAS points from a Level 3 programme of study to be accepted onto the programme. You are also required to have a level two or a grade C or above in English and/or Maths. You will need to provide references and to attend an interview prior to acceptance. Method of Assessment Assessment will be carried out for each module using a variety of methods including assignments, presentations, research projects, personal journal and other locally devised assessment. Foundation Degree Children, Families & Community Health Level: 4/5 Duration: 3 year part-time, 1 day p/w You need: 1 ‘A ’level or equivalent e.g. level 3 course + GCSE English or a portfolio of learning and experience. All students must successfully complete the University Certificate in Children, Families and Community Health to progress onto year 2 All students are required to obtain a current Criminal Records Bureau Certificate. Method of Assessment Assessment will be carried out at the end of each module, using a variety of methods; for example, essays, reports, phase tests and poster presentations. Each module successfully achieved equates to 15 credits at either Level 1 or 2. Course Content This course allows you to access Higher Education with or without formal qualifications, although a Level 3 qualification in a Care or Early Years related subject would be beneficial. BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC)/ Diploma (HND) In Computing and Systems Development (QCF) Level: 4/5 Duration: HNC 1 year/ HND 2 years You need: A BTEC level 3 qualification in IT with a Merit profile or above. Mature students may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include work experience (paid or unpaid).

THE COURSE OF MY LIFE As a young adult, I neither had the support or the motivation to succeed in education. After having spent years travelling and living abroad, I returned to England and found very limited job prospects. I saw The Access to Higher Education course at Grantham College as a first step back into education and as a way to open doors for new opportunities. The Foundation Degree in Families, Parenting and Communities presented an alternative route to a ‘traditional’ degree. I was able to enter higher education whilst starting a family and continuing to work. On completion of the course, I progressed onto the final year of the Bsc (Hons) Degree in Public and Community Health at De Montfort University. Returning to education has provided me with the opportunity to face new challenges, and acquire invaluable skills, understanding and confidence. Since my graduation in 2008, I have been employed at Grantham College as a Personal Tutor. I continue to welcome opportunities to further my professional development and have recently completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

Higher National Diploma (HND) in Health & Social Care (SUBJECT TO ACCREDITATION) Level: 5 Duration: This qualification is a 2 year course. You will be required to attend College 2 days per week. You need: 5 GCSEs Grade A-C (including English and maths), and a BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care, or GNVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care, or a GCE Advanced level profile which demonstrates a strong performance in a relevant subject, or an Access to Higher Education Certificate and have related work experience or be working in health and social care. All students are required to have or obtain a current Criminal Records Bureau Certificate. Method of Assessment This course is assessment based. Assessment of learners practice will be observed to ensure the learners are demonstrating competence within their placement opportunity. Course Content This qualification provides opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge and practical skills in the workplace and prepares learners for employment in the Health & Social Care sector. The HND in Health & Social Care involves a placement for 1-2 days per week (if you are not already in employment) for a minimum of 200 hours over the duration of the course. ENGINEERING CASE STUDY LAWRENCE KEEN I first came to Grantham College to study for a BTEC National Diploma in Operations and Maintenance Engineering. After completing the course I found that I wanted to continue learning. I decided to stay on at Grantham College to enrol on the Higher National Certificate in Electrical Engineering course. I enjoyed my previous course so staying on at College was the best choice for me rather than going to University, not to mention the difference in cost! I loved the practical side of the course, especially having the opportunity to make circuit boards and build electrical circuits which I then had to test. I was also able to design and develop my own project. Shortly before I completed the course, I applied for a role with Froment power test solutions. After seeing that I was close to gaining my HNC, they invited me for a further interview and I got the job! I now work as a Trainee Electrical Technician within the company.

Awards Teacher Education Graduate Diploma/ Diploma for Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (Formerly PGCE/Cert Ed) Level: 5/6 Duration: 2 years You need: This course is suitable for qualified adults who are engaged in teaching in the post-compulsory sector. Students must be engaged in teaching in the postcompulsory sector for at least 75 hours per year and have a minimum of a Level 3 qualification or equivalent in the subject they are planning to teach. Students must have a minimum Level 2 qualification in Maths and English. Method of Assessment Students will be observed whilst teaching, a minimum of 4 times each year. There is a written submission for each module in which students are required to show they can meet the assessment criteria. What is the ILM? Grantham College offer two management courses through the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM). The ILM is the UK’s largest management body, combining industryleading qualifications and specialist member services. The Management qualifications combine innovative design with a strong focus on developing workplace performance, and are specifically designed to meet the needs of managers and their organisations. Course Content This course is suitable for senior managers with a high degree of autonomy for deploying resources and achieving strategic goals. The qualification allows senior managers to critically evaluate their skills for their formal development as well as developing their strategic management skills, providing leadership and coaching to other managers whilst also focusing on organisational performance and strategy. Candidates must complete all Mandatory units with a credit value of 27, and then select units from the Optional Unit Group B to a minimum of 18 credits to gain accreditation meeting the minimum credit requirement of 45. Mandatory Units: ■■ Develop a strategic business plan ■■ Develop strategic direction and leadership ■■ Lead change in an organisation. Optional Unit Group B – there are a number of optional units from which to make your choice. Opportunities Successful candidates may expect to benefit from enhanced career prospects within management and leadership. Candidates may choose to progress to a vocationally related programme in management and leadership or a University programme of study.
Opportunities Students completing this programme can, if they wish go onto further studies such as completion of an MBA Programme or a PhD.

THE COURSE OF MY LIFE My employer Moy Park was looking at external methods for staff development, and came across the ILM Management courses at Grantham College. This course was chosen as it best suited their needs and it offered a general overview on all areas of day to day management. One of my favourite parts of the course was being able to speak with managers from different organisations to discuss different management styles; it was highly beneficial as it allowed me an insight into how other people manage. Also as the lecturer had first-hand experience of working in industry they were able to relate course units specifically to my role. Completing the course has helped me to progress within my career, as it enabled me to improve my ability to achieve and improve in my then role as department manager; I have since been promoted four times and am now the Supply Chain Manager! After the experience of completing a professional management course through Grantham College, Moy Park also ran a bespoke training course at team leader level through the Business Development Centre.

OCR Diploma Leadership for Care Level: 5 Duration: Dependant on the individual 12-18 months You need: Applicants are expected to already be in management and have two different types of qualifications. The second qualification should be in managing care services for which the NVQ 4 in Leadership and Management for Care Services is relevant. Method of Assessment Assessment takes place in the workplace with the majority of evidence generated by the candidate from their normal work-based activities. Direct observation by an assessor is required as the primary source of evidence for this qualification. Work products, professional discussion, witness testimonies will demonstrate competence and the application of knowledge. You will be allocated an assessor who will judge the evidence of your performance, knowledge and understanding against the units of competence in order to determine whether you have demonstrated competence at this level.
Course Content The course is suitable for current residential care managers in child and adult settings. It is also appropriate for middle managers working in social care settings who are leading and managing a care service that meets the needs of individuals, safeguards and promotes wellbeing and development of people. Candidates must prove competence in four mandatory and five optional units. Mandatory Units: ■■ Develop and maintain systems, procedures and practice of care services to manage risks and comply with health and safety requirements ■■ Lead and manage effective communication that promotes positive outcomes for people within care services ■■ Lead and manage provision of care services that respects, protects and promotes the rights and responsibilities of people ■■ Manage and develop yourself and your workforce within care services. Optional units are taken from a suite of five units - A - E inclusive. The Intermediate Certificate in Human Resource Management Level: 5 Duration: 1 year You need: The CIPD qualifications at Intermediate level offer the perfect platform to further develop your HR, knowledge after studying a CIPD Foundation level qualification. Accommodation As a general guide, fees for College owned accommodation for 2011/2012, excluding meals, are shown below: Single Room - ÂŁ77.74 per week Shared Room - ÂŁ67.00 per week Accommodation is available on campus in Sedgwick Hall and Sedgwick Mews. 67 places are available and all rooms are furnished with most having their own ensuite facilities. Rent is payable termly. If you want to live off-campus, you should contact the Student Accommodation Manager who can help arrange alternative accommodation with carefully selected families or in privately rented accommodation close to the College. Car Parking Limited student parking is available for blue badge holders before 4.30pm. After 4.30pm car parking spaces are available and provided free of charge to students and visitors. These are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Additional parking can be found at the
public car park situated in Welham Street, close to the main campus. Bicycle storage is available for students on the main campus
Careers & Advice Careers advice and guidance is available via an appointment system to current students and anyone considering coming to study at the College. It is also available for members of the public. The College has a Matrix Quality Award for its Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment services and a Career Mark for its Careers Education. The College Careers Adviser works in partnership with advisers from Connexions Lincolnshire & Rutland and is based at the Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment desk.
E-Learning Centre The e-Learning Centre has been designed to provide you with a state-of-the-art learning environment. The Centre has 31 open access PCs, all with Internet access, Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 2010, with some available to book in advance. Black and white and colour printing facilities are also available. The Centre also lends laptops for use both on and off campus. In addition, there are 4 separate
Skills seminar rooms, or ‘pods’, each equipped with between 15 and 24 PCs and a data projector. The Centre is open from 8.30am–5.00pm, Monday to Thursday, and 8.30am–4.30pm on Fridays.
Food and Drink A wide selection of meals is available from the main Refectory at very competitive prices. Snacks are available from vending machines throughout the College and also from Nixx, our shop and cafeteria. Nixx has seating for over 100 people and provides a choice of hot and cold snacks, including confectionery, paninis, bagels, salads and jacket potatoes, as well as stationery, cards, personal items and postage stamps. Hot meals are available from 4.30pm TuesdayThursday. Students, staff and the general public are also welcome to dine in the College’s Witham Room restaurant (open for lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and for dinner on Tuesday and Thursday evenings) which is run by the Hospitality & Catering Department. Located on the top floor of the Main Building it offers an outstanding view of Grantham! Booking is essential and can be made by visiting the Restaurant in person or by telephoning 01476 400227.
Stepping Stones Nursery Stepping Stones Nursery is the partner nursery for Grantham College. The nursery is a short distance from the College grounds and provides full-time day care for children aged from birth to 11 years old. Stepping stones aim is to provide a secure, caring and stimulating environment in small, homely, age specific areas. Children are encouraged to progress at their own pace and to fulfil their potential in all areas of development. In August 2010 the nursery was graded Outstanding by OFSTED. Nursery opening times are 7:30am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday. Nursery fees
are charged at £3.85 per hour, although discounts are offered for Grantham College students. The nursery has an open door policy therefore parents are welcome to view the nursery at their convenience, appointments are not necessary. For more information please contact the nursery on 01476 593643.

Library The College has a well-stocked library. Learning resources available to you include 30,000 books, a wide range of periodicals, DVDs, daily newspapers and an online catalogue system for research use and book reservations. You can also access the Internet via nine computer workstations and use photocopying facilities and various online databases. Wireless Internet access is also available in the library and is also available at selected locations around the College. The Library is open from 8.30am - 6.00pm on Mondays, 8.30am - 7.15pm Tuesday - Thursday and 8.30am - 4.30pm on Fridays.

How to Apply FOR FINANCE
Students who start University or College after 1 September 2012 (academic year 2012/13) will be on a new student finance scheme.
Students can apply for finance online by visiting www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance.
All students paying the tuition fees can apply to their Student Finance England for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover all or part of their fee. This does not have to be paid back until you have graduated and are earning over £21,000 a year. A means tested maintenance grant of up to £3,250 is also available.
