The University of Bedfordshire is a modern, vibrant University with world-class facilities and excellent progression rates, 92 per cent of their graduates are either in work and/or further study within six months of graduating (Destinations of Leavers survey 2011). Celebrating its 150th year in 2012, Bishop Grosseteste University College offers a wide range of facilities for students including a sport and fitness centre and the Curiositea Cafe. In a recent National Student Survey Bishop Grosseteste students rated the overall satisfaction of the University at 89% a rise of 5% since 2011 whilst three of its degree courses are ranked in the top three nationally.

IQER - Top Marks Grantham College has been awarded the highest possible result for the quality of its Higher Education provision following a recent review by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). QAA, similar to Ofsted but for University level courses, introduced a new method of inspection called IQER, which is specifically devised to assess how Further Education colleges meet their responsibilities for Higher Education and maintain the level of the University type courses. Grantham College was successful in all areas, which included academic standards, quality of learning and accuracy of public information.

FINANCE & APPLICATIONS FULL-TIME TUITION FEES If you are on a Full-Time Higher Education course you are required to make a contribution towards your tuition fees. Please contact our Student Finance Officer, Jo Bowman on 01476 400281 for the latest fees information. All students paying the tuition fees can apply to Student Finance England for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover all or part of their fee. This does not have to be paid back until you have graduated and are earning over £21,000 a year. A means-tested maintenance grant of up to £3,354 is also available from 2013/14.

Student Finance – What you need to know! Changes to tuition fees

How to Apply FOR FINANCE

Students who start University or college after 1 September 2012 (academic year 2013/14) will be on a new student finance scheme.

Students can apply for finance online by visiting www.gov.uk/studentfinance

The main changes are: ■■ Part-Time students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan (replacing grants) ■■ Tuition fee loans will go up to cover the higher fees ■■ Universities and colleges can charge tuition fees of up to £9,000 ■■ You don’t start repaying your loan until you earn £21,000 a year (up from £15,000).

When to apply for student finance Full-Time and Part-Time students can apply now for finance for 2013/14. The latest you can apply for student finance is: ■■ up to nine months after the start of the academic year if you’re a FullTime student ■■ up to six months after the start of the academic year if you’re a Part-Time student.

The Higher Apprenticeship benefits students by equipping them with great qualifications. Higher apprentices study for work-based learning qualifications like a Level 4 NVQ. In some instances you can work towards an academic qualification like a Foundation Degree. Some of our most established and respected companies offer these types of courses. BGB in Grantham is just one of those employers, offering: “aspiring engineers who are keen to start building up practical work experience while progressing academically to graduate level.”

For example, the Engineering Technology Higher Apprenticeship gives apprentices the chance to study for a HNC or HND that can even lead to an honours degree and a professional qualification as an Incorporated Engineer. It takes three years to complete the course and could lead to a career as an aerospace engineering technician or an electrical engineering technician, entering the industry on a starting salary of around £19,000.

ACCOUNTING

The AAT Diploma prepares you to hold a senior finance role by teaching you to undertake advanced processes, such as drafting financial statements for limited companies, management accounting and taxation. Your new credentials will help you climb to the top of the corporate ladder with the possibility of further study.

■■ Financial Statements – building on from your Level 3 studies you will look at financial accounting of companies in more detail including accounting standards.

You Need A completed AAT Level 3 Diploma and a recommendation by the tutor to progress on to Level 4.

■■ Management Accounting – you will look at two papers covering similar material but from different angles – budgeting and financial performance. The papers include management accounting techniques, standard costing and variances and limiting factors.

Method of Assessment Assessment is via a computer-based exam for each of the 5 subjects plus a written project which is uploaded to the AAT website for marking. Please note that exams will be held at Grantham College on Saturday mornings.

Opportunities On successful completion of this course you may choose to study further to become a qualified accountant or become dual qualified and study for the AAT (Association of Taxation Technicians).

You Need A minimum of 120 UCAS points. You will need to have passed a previous qualification in Art & Design as well as Level 2 qualification in English. If you are an adult learner with different or no qualifications then your prior knowledge and experience will be taken into account at application and interview stage.

Method of Assessment Assessment is through continuous coursework, such as practical projects, visual and oral presentations and written assignments.

Course Content The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is the first year of the two year Diploma (HND) course and can be taken as a standalone qualification or as the first year of a two year programme. It comprises a wide range of creative units. The course will introduce you to a broad range of practical skills in both two and three dimensions and develops a critical awareness of the historical, contextual and social issues relevant to contemporary art and design practice.

There are a wide variety of careers available in the creative industries and this is a growth area nationally. Traditional careers include professional artist, freelance designer in industrial/product design, graphic design, packaging design, glass design, exhibition design, interior and spatial design, illustrator and photographer.

Businesses are at the core of new ideas and products both online and on our high street. This course is designed for a wide range of individuals who want to gain the academic knowledge and understanding of how a business runs. COMPUTING

A career in business as a computing and IT professional or in public service in general is what you can expect to go into once successfully completing this course. With the fast paced world of IT you will learn the most current and up to date technologies including business skills for e-Commerce, computer systems and employability and professional development with the option of also studying networking, security and software development.

Students can also progress direct to the third year of a full degree course at University.

Awarded by the University of Bedfordshire, this highly popular course can take several pathways and is aimed at those already or aiming to be employed as a Mechanical/Manufacturing or Electrical/Electronics engineer. Looking at areas such as improvement and management techniques, design and science, you will be equipped with the most relevant skills to further your career.

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

Health & Social Care can be a highly rewarding sector to work in. This course enables you to put your knowledge and practical skills such as communication, Health & Safety and development into practice in the workplace. Because this course is hands-on, you will be taught using a variety of methods which will enable you to relate theory-taught sessions to practical work carried out in the workplace.

Course Content The HND is offered on a Full-Time or Part-Time basis and is suitable for those wishing to pursue a career within the public sector. Studying on this course will enable you to develop your understanding of relevant ethical, legal and professional issues when dealing with members of the public and will equip you with a solid basis of knowledge and skills to make a real and immediate contribution to a public sector organisation, military service or youth leadership.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

This course provides you with the skills knowledge and insight to enable you to make a contribution to the learning, development and support of learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). CASE STUDY My employer Moy Park was looking at external methods for staff development, and came across the ILM Management courses at Grantham College. This course was chosen as it best suited our needs and it offered a general overview on all areas of day-to-day management.

As a general guide, fees for College owned accommodation for 2012/2013 excluding meals, are shown below: Single Room - ÂŁ86 per week Accommodation is available on campus in Sedgwick Hall and Sedgwick Mews. 67 places are available and all rooms are furnished with most having their own en-suite facilities. Rent is payable termly. If you want to live off-campus, you should contact the Student Accommodation Manager who can help arrange alternative accommodation with carefully selected families or in privately rented accommodation close to the College. Limited student parking is available for blue badge holders before 4.30pm. After 4.30pm car parking spaces are available and provided free of charge to students and visitors. These are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional parking can be found at the public car park situated in Welham Street, close to the main campus. Bicycle storage is available for students on the main campus.

Careers & Advice

Careers advice and guidance is available via an appointment system to current students and anyone considering coming to study at the College. It is also available for members of the public. The College has a Matrix Quality Award for its Information, Advice, Guidance & Enrolment services and a Career Mark for its Careers Education. The e-Learning Centre has been designed to provide you with a stateof-the-art learning environment. The Centre has 31 open access PCs, all with internet access, Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 2010, with some available to book in advance. Black and white and colour printing facilities are also available. The Centre also lends laptops for use both on and off campus. In addition, there are 4 separate Skills seminar rooms, or ‘pods’, each equipped with between 17 and 24 PCs and a data projector. The Centre is open from 8.30am–5.00pm, Monday to Thursday, and 8.30am–4.30pm on Fridays during term time.

All students who enrol onto a course are allocated a personal tutor. They will monitor and support you with your academic progress and provide help when necessary. There are also a wide range of support services available to you whilst studying at College. These include learning support tailored to your needs, careers advice and guidance, counselling, a mental health worker and a nurse on site 2 days a week.

Fo od & D rink A wide selection of meals are available from the main Refectory at very competitive prices. Snacks are available from vending machines throughout the College and also from Nixx, our shop and cafeteria. Nixx has seating for over 100 people and provides a choice of hot and cold snacks, including confectionery, paninis, bagels, salads and jacket potatoes, as well as stationery, cards, personal items and postage stamps. Hot meals are available from 4.30pm Tuesday-Thursday. Students, staff and the general public are also welcome to dine in the College’s Apple Tree restaurant (open for lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and for dinner on Tuesday and Thursday evenings) which is run by the Hospitality & Catering Department. Located on the top floor of the Main Building, it offers an outstanding view of Grantham! Booking is essential and can be made by visiting the Restaurant in person or by telephoning 01476 400227.

Learning resources available to you include 30,000 books, a wide range of periodicals, DVDs, daily newspapers and an online catalogue system for research use and book reservations. You can also access the internet via 10 computer workstations and use photocopying

facilities and various online databases. Wireless internet access is also available in the library and at selected locations around the College. The Library is open from 8.30am - 6.00pm on Mondays, 8.30am - 7.15pm Tuesday - Thursday and 8.30am - 4.30pm on Fridays.
