My name is Grant Poteat and this is the total embodiment of my work. Architecture + Design is the true nature of what my past, present, and future is riveted within. With the absorption of knowledge through life experiences, insightful discussions, switching critique and powerful pedagogical curriculum, my understanding and passion for architecture + design has progressed to what it is today. Architecture is a platform that can mold and shape our future and I yearn to be a part of this. In August of 2018 I graduated with honors from Clemson University receiving my Bachelors of Arts in Architecture Degree with a minor in business management. In Spring of 2022 I will graduate with highest honors with a Masters of Architecture degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. During my time at the Georgia Institute of Technology I have won several awards including being selected as a finalist for the John C. Portman Prize competition studio. Additionally, I received the 2021 Lord Aeck Sargent Design fellowship given to a student entering their final year of the M.Arch program at the Georgia Institute of Technology based on high academic and design achievement. I have gained approximately 5 years of relevant, professional experience in architecture and design. Throughout these years I have completed and had approved all required NCARB hours for architectural registration. Upon graduation, I will begin taking architecture registration exams to become a licensed architect. I combine my interest in traveling, people, culture, music, and intention to change my surroundings for the better in my approach to architecture + design. To me, architecture is less about buildings and more about people. I am passionate about people and making the world a better place. The driving force behind my love for architecture + design is my belief that architecture has a lasting, life-changing impact on people and communities. This portfolio contains a selection of creative works that were completed at the School of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Ga, the School of Architecture at Clemson University in Clemson, SC, the Barcelona Architecture Center in Barcelona, Spain and professionally at Dwell Design Studio in Atlanta, Ga. These projects were developed with a passion for understanding, commitment, and captivation. Thank you,
Grant Poteat

01 SE GUE Design + Research I - Fall 2021 Professor: John Peponis, Ph.D. Peachtree Center | Atlanta, Ga Museums and galleries deliberately bring together, for the benefit of their visitors, two of the fundamental meanings of the verb to see: to perceive with the eyes and to perceive or apprehend the mind. How can we design seeing and the relationship between point of view and movement as embodied and situated experience? Developed as a museum of mappings, Segue consists of a series of capsules along the main gallery space aimed at immersing the visitor into the content. The capsule acting as a segue into the mapping, the building then acting as a segue from the busy urban front to the open site. In their simplest form, mappings are visual representations of information. The goal being to present a mapping to a viewer as not merely an object to look at, but a space to inhabit and interact with. Programs Utilized: Revit, Rhino, AutoCad, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, VRay Developed with critical feedback from: Professor Emeritus Yves Abrioux, U Paris 8 Professor Michael Benedikt, U Texas, Austin Professor Emeritus Kenneth Knoespel, Georgia Tech Professor Sophia Psarra, Bartlett School of Arch. B R I D G I N G T HE GA P Portman Prize Competition Studio - Spring 2021 Professor: Charles Rudolph Critic: Mario Gooden, Professor Columbia GSAPP Piedmont Park | Atlanta, Ga This studio was informed by the history of radical thinking about architecture in the 20th century and looked beyond to the manner of space making that Indigenous Peoples and Black bodies throughout the diaspora have creatively appropriated various aspects of the landscape and the built environment. The challenge was to prepare a design intervention for a 42,000 SF exhibition and performance building at the historic site of the original Negro Building in Piedmont Park. The context of the intervention was a “New South and International Exposition” to be held in the park in the near future that commemorates the 1895 Atlanta Cotton States and International Exposition. The space included exhibition spaces, Climate Hall, Justice center, lecture hall, and performance theatre. Programs Utilized: Revit, Rhino, AutoCad, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, VRay Selected as a finalist to appear before the Portman Prize Jury including: Mario Gooden Joel Sanders Felicia Davis Ada Tolla

03 PAL INDR OMOS Advanced Studio I - Fall 2020 Professor: Julie Kim, RA AIA NCARB MLK Jr. Drive | Historic Paschals Site | Atlanta, Ga Radical Good Trouble. This was the mantra behind this studio, a term coined by the late Congressman John Lewis. Through our investigative research around the site and the history of civil rights in Atlanta, as well as the country, we used our new understanding and knowledge to explore the ideas of social (in)justice, democracy, and civil disobedience at the scales of the city and of the building/site. We explored heavily how the urban landscape and architecture can act as sanctuary, refuge, stage, performance, and how it can be coalesced to develop places of multi-sensory reconciliation and action. Among many others, I created a place of solace, a place of reflection, and a place of deep understanding, in hopes that any visitor would feel welcome and as they inhabited the space, leave on the other side a better more, complete person. Intervening on the historic Paschal’s restaurant site, it was vital that the project reflected and honored the past while simultaneously looking towards the future, moving forwards while looking back. Hence, the Palindrome. Programs Utilized: Revit, Rhino, AutoCad, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, VRay

04 C CAC Senior Studio - Spring 2018 Professor: Joseph Schott Columbia, SC Columbia Cultural Arts Center. The start of creation. Designed to regenerate a city and neighborhood through the medium of art. CCAC features a 250 seat auditorium to house music performances, theatre acts, and everything in-between. Through a visit to the site, it was apparent this area needed rejuvenation. Located just south of the South Carolina State House, this museum would provide a liveliness to the area. The city of Columbia is starving for artistic expression through every medium imaginable. Providing adequate infrastructure for local artists to express themselves was vital to the program development, in addition to housing art for people to come and interact with. The aim was to create a unique environment for performances, exhibitions, education, and community outreach that welcome and impact this community. Project selected as a finalist to appear before the Columbia Design League and local professionals in Columbia, SC and was displayed during the summer of 2018 in the Columbia Public Library. Programs Utilized: Revit, Rhino, AutoCad, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, VRay

05 UA NRUBR BAA NN II NZT AT I O N E G R AT I O N Study Abroad Studio - Fall 2017 Professor: Miguel Roldan Barcelona, Spain Through the concept of urbanization I was able to create the best space for the site. This building is a fully co-working space that will be fully public on the ground level, an extension of the street, and gradually become more and more private as you ascend the levels to the fully private office space at the top. Located in the neighborhood of Sant Antoni in Barcelona, Spain this site serves as the connection between the old dendritic city and the more modern Eixample grid that Barcelona is famous for. Studying at the Barcelona Architecture Center I was able to learn what it meant to live and work in a modern, urban environment. This experience allowed me to gain the knowledge to create a better functioning space in one of the biggest cities in the world.

06 500 WE ST TR ADE Dwell Design Studio Project Manager: Greg Watford My Role: Design Staff Charlotte, NC 500 West Trade is located on the western edge of downtown Charlotte, walking distance from Johnson and Wales University, and replaces a blighted block. This concrete-framed high-rise mixed-use development with a wood-framed mid-rise over retail and parking podium sits on the new Westbound Charlotte Rail Line across the street from the site of a planned Multi-modal facility. The rooftop pool deck will provide spectacular views of the Charlotte Coliseum and the skyline. I started on this project during the Design Development stage and continued to work with it through the construction administration phase. Working on all aspects of construction documentation and exterior modeling I have included just a portion of the drawings that I personally worked on in the following pages. The biggest design impact I had on the project involved me designing the railing for the roof top amenity area, which I have included a couple design iterations that I came up with on the next page. Programs Utilized: Revit, Revu Bluebeam

07 1781 PE ACHTREE Dwell Design Studio Project Manager: Greg Watford My Role: Design Staff Atlanta, Ga
This striking high-rise building defines the destination and electrifies the streetscape with a resident lobby that shouts “you have arrived”, a chef-driven restaurant, and a retail-inspired ground floor leasing center. This was the first project that I worked on when I started at Dwell Design Studio. Picking up the project in the Design Development stage allowed me to work thorough many challenges including value engineering and several owner inspired changes. Through collaboration with the team and visiting the site many times, we worked together to create a successful solution in the building that has now been completed. Working on all aspects of construction documentation including a sample on the following pages, I used Revit to successfully communicate the design to the contractor. I personally performed exterior lighting studies to give the client an idea of different options. Programs Utilized: Revit, Revu Bluebeam

08 THE MER CANTILE Dwell Design Studio Project Manager: Simon Lee My Role: Design Staff Omaha, NE Bringing a new twist to the Old Market neighborhood in Nebraska, The Mercantile is the first phase of a city-defining mixed-use redevelopment. With contextualism at the forefront, our approach was to bridge the Old Market neighbor and the new commercial/hotel waterfront complex. We embraced and activated the pedestrian street edge with shopping, amenities and commercial office space. This is the first project that I started completely from the beginning all the way through to construction. Our team received this project after a simple density study was completed, tasked with designing units, exterior, and interior layouts. I helped design several units from scratch, unique to this project, which can be found on the following pages. I also modeled a significant portion of the exterior elevations in Revit for the entire building. A challenge for this project was understanding the local climate and having to take into consideration designing things to function in cold weather, that is not typical in the southeast. Programs Utilized: Revit, Revu Bluebeam
