Families are the tie that reminds us of yesterday, provides strength and support today, and gives us hope for tomorrow.

Preface

Just imagine when you’ve had conversations with your mother and amazing thoughts came from the gesture. Well, back in March of this year, Cynthia had a conversation with Mom (Lillie Pearl) about family. She gained an extraordinary idea while conversing and that was to find a way to bring family members (2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation) together.

The first course of action was made on April of 2023 where a committee (Felecia, Teressa, Latrell, Kimiko, Chiquitta, and of course Cynthia) met to share ideas, strategizing how to bring this mental picture to fruition. We prayed for God’s Holy presence and direction to deliver unified thoughts, to strengthen understanding, and provide a course of action to gather the Evans Family under one roof. We were blessed by the short time of planning. We were blessed in knowing to be cognizant of needs. God gave us, YES, the power to bring this wondrous, glories assemblage of family and fellowship to Macon, Georgia.

One aspect emphasized while planning the event was the proclivity to present a family souvenir booklet (“A Gift of Family: A Legacy of Love”), a lasting treasure to enhance knowledge of family that intensifies the mindfulness about us, coupled with preserving memories and strengthening bonds. In this booklet you will discover the portrayal of ancestors’ life within the historical context of the time and place in which they lived.

This is work written from the given author’s point of view designed to prime readers for what follows. Thanks to the following for your contributions, your efforts of making these written stories prevalent: Grace, Frankie, Angela, April, Michelle, Rochelle, Darlene, Charlene, DeQuante, Lillie, Valerie, Valeria, Gladys, Joann, Charlie Ruth, Catina, Jeanette, Cynthia, and Felecia. The ample choices you provided not only gives a glimpse of illustrating how the product was structured it also delivers sound facts from life relationships taken from their ancestral background.

Truly the booklet displays and identifies known descendants, captured moments, shared experiences of life, photos, and concludes with a list of successors, emanated from life practices we as family never knew based on achievements and accomplishments from second and third generations, which emerges from an ancestral couple (Amos and Hattie Evans). Overall, the readings tell the story of the Evans Family life, adventures, Careers, migrations, and origins. Lastly, it will be remembered that a timeless keepsake such as this will become a touch stone for family history, strengthening bonds between generations and sparking conversations that connect us to our roots hence forth and forever more.

Family Ancestral History

Families are special, gifts from God, is an important organization in our society; a group of related persons who share a home. Families are life branches on a tree. We grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one. Around the family and the home all the greatest virtues are created, strengthened, and maintained filled with God’s love, strength, blessings of family unity and grace. The Family history began with the focus on Bill and Ann Evans who married at a young age. The two enjoyed the blessing of four children through the hard times they encountered. They worked together to make sure that their children Willie, Reese, Francis, and Mary understood the way of life of our heritage, even though struggling times.

The children history has brought forth the existence of the family bloodline. Willie Evans met and married Claude Brown and together they raised seven children: William “Biddy”, Cunningham, James, George, Augusta, Shirley, and Grace. The former Mayor of Sparta Georgia (Mayor William Evans Jr.) is the great~great grandson of William Biddy and Ann. Reese Evans met and married Carrie Howard. The two, a loving couple, had a daughter named Lillie Evans. Lillie married Joe Andrews. Francis married West Johnson. In their marriage they had three children, David, Tiny and Annie Kate.

Mary met Crawford Tucker, the son of Jim and Emma Tucker. Crawford had four siblings: Jessie, Ephraim, Carrie and Rena. Crawford and Mary adored one another so much they knew they had to be together. So, they married in 1880. This couple had eight children: Steve, Willie, HATTIE Q, Ola who died at an early age, Bessie who died as a teen, Essie B a twin with Joe B. Essie died in her infant years and Gordon better known as (G~ Boy).

Steve one day met a girl he liked very much named Sally Mathis. They married and were blessed with nine children: Willie B., Lucille, Mary Lee, Leola, Rosa Mae, Sarah, Marion, Jessie, and Arthur B. All are deceased.

HATTIE Q. met this tall slim gentleman named AMOS at 15 years of age. They courted each other for a while then married in 1913. AMOS AND HATTIE had eight children: Willie Lee (UL), Cleo, Tommie, Amos Jr. (AJ), Lille Mae, Sadie Joe, George, and Lillie Pearl. It is written in family history, Amos always shared with the family that his grandfather was a descendant of slavery who came from the state of Virginia, sold to a slave master bearing the name Evans.

As time moved on in history, he indicated that this Evans slave his grandfather migrated to Hancock County Sparta, GA, grew up in the St. Galilee community, and married part~ Native American woman where they bored four children, his father Joe and three aunts Ann, Liza, and Carrie.

Joe met Jennie Dawson and married her in 1891. They had six children: William, Viola, Amos, Francis, Azzie Lee and Joe Jr. Joe Jr. met and married Leola Smith and in that union four children were born: Ulysses, Willie Myra, Preedy and Little Joe. In 1843 Jennie died, a few years later Joe Sr. married Mary Lou Baker where two children were born Frank and Annie Lee.

On HATTIE’S side of the family her baby brother Joe B had two children: Marshall and Annie Mae Tucker. Gordon, HATTIE’S brother met Bessie Brinkley, and, in their marriage, they had a son named Gordon Jr. He was better known as (Pea~zo). Willie Richard, known as (Bowell) met a nice lady named Rosa Ella, known as Rose Zetta, married and were blessed with ten children: John Willie, George, Christine, Eugene, Rosa René, Rosetta, Lewis Crawford, Lena Mae (Pie), Bessie Mae and Willie Mae. Bessie Mae transitioned June 2023 where all are now deceased.

The Evans and Tucker history continues with a vast number of grands, great~grands, great~great grands who have and is making a difference, making a great impact on our family and through~out society. As we reflect over this family tree, we find that our ancestors in these families have worked with much strife to make life pleasant as it is today for us. We are proud to say that God has been with us through it all, we thank Him for His blessing today. We thank Him for these people who have paved the way for us. An now that we exist in the present time we must continue the ground work they have created, formed, shaped, utilizing the concept of establishing the framework in guiding and nurturing the minds of our future generation, our grand’s, great~grand’s, great~great grand’s whose left to carry on the legacy and saga to make history for Amos and Hattie’s family. May God be with us today.

Amos Evans and Hattie Q. Brown Tucker both were born in Sparta Georgia in 1898. They both were reared and received minimum education from school at the Galilee Community School. Years later after meeting, they were married at age 15 in 1913. Amos was a member and attended the St. Galilee Baptist Church where Hattie was a member and attended the Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Among this union eight children were born: Willie Lee (UL), Cleo, Tommie, Amos Jr. (AJ), Lillie Mae, Sadie Joe, George, and Lillie Pearl. UL, Cleo, Tommie, and AJ all attended Galilee school. Lille Mae, Sadie Joe, George, and Pearl attended Hickory Grove and Bethlehem School. Among their children, Pearl was the only 12th grade graduate of Sparta’s first public black high school called L.S. Ingraham High in 1956.

For years Amos and Hattie were sharecroppers where they both worked for and on James Dunn Plantation. Later Amos worked at the Sparta Wood Factory in Granite Hill community. Hattie ushered into life being a homemaker and cooked for Mag Eagles family for years. They worked faithfully until their health failed. Amos passed away in September 1955 working fiercely in the yard. Hattie’s children were diligent in caring for her after the loss of her husband. There were several opportunities for her to visit each one of their homes over the years, as well as their returning home to Sparta to spend time nurturing her, supplying her every need by taking good care of her to sustain her way of life. Hattie passed in August 1972. They both left the blessing of 28 grandchildren that has graced the world with a strong legacy to continue.

Deacon Tommie Evans

Deacon Tommie Evans was born on February 12, 1919, to Amos and Hattie Evans. He was reared and educated in Sparta, Georgia where he attended the Galilee Community School and was described as a talented and crafty individual. He possessed this talent of carpentry and construction at a young age. This wise and soft~spoken gentleman met Susie Nash and married her. In this union two children were born: Effie Lee and Betty. As years moved on, he was drafted to serve and defend our country. He served in World War II. Later the marriage ended.

After his military service he went to Atlanta in the early forties and sought a better way of living. His first apartment was on Daniel Street near his membership church Israel Missionary Baptist Church. Most of the people in the area where he lived were also from Sparta and they were members of Israel too. After strong observation of him, he was set aside and later became a deacon in the church. There in Atlanta, he started his business as a carpenter and designer. Gifts from God, he was a self~star, self~motivator and enjoyed visualizing how his next project is going to look.

In early 1942 Tommie met Eula Robinson After dating for many months, he proposed, and they were joined in Holy Matrimony on October 14, 1943. They were married for 67 years. The stride in work achievements and accomplishments was unimaginable and quite impeccable. He built homes, finished cabinets, remodeled floors, remodeled walls, plumbing, and completed electrical issues. Eula also worked as an interior decorator for many.

They both took on the task with grace and dignity to complete many projects among the edifice such as remodeling the Church Sanctuary, Pulpit, Flooring, Hallway Flooring and Design, Fellowship Hall, Reconstruction of the Pastor’s Blue Room Study, Choir Rooms, Deacon’s Chambers, the Ladies and Men’s Room, and the Church Conference Room plus other tasks.

Years later, Tommie was called to work on the renowned campus of Spellman College as a carpenter. He served faithfully there until his retirement. The president of the college at that time Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole Ph.D. made sure he was given a glorious send~off commemorating the service work he produced during his tenure there. After retirement he did numerous odd jobs for countless businesses around the city of Atlanta. Eula continued working, flourishing to complete the most profuse interior decorative projects, supplying draperies in homes, institutions, and businesses.

Performing odd jobs kept them both busy and alert at their age. Tommie died peacefully sitting in his lounge chair at home in his den on June 4, 2009, at age 92 and four years later Eula passed in 2013.

Lillie Mae Evans Bundridge

The oldest daughter “Lillie Me” was born in1928 to Amos and Hattie in Hancock County Sparta, Ga. She was best known by the family as “Sister”. She attended the Bethlehem School, joined the Hickory Grove Baptist Church at an early age. She was well known as an astounding vocalist for the church choir. She attended L.S Ingraham High School. Soon after this, she fell in love with Charlie Bundridge. They soon married and moved to Macon GA with only $ 10.00 in Charlie’s pocket. They graced their presence at Bethel AME Church in Macon and became congregational church members.

In 1948 their first child “Valeria” was welcomed into the world. They rented their first home on Neal Avenue in the Pleasant Hill Community for 2 years. At that point in time Charlie was advised to obtain something of his own. So, he sought out and purchased land and placed a train box car on this property where he reconstructed it yes, modified it through making additions and created a modernized home that exists today on Hollingsworth Road. This is where Gladys, Joann, and Charlie Ruth were born. They all lived comfortably under this roof for years, the majority of their lives.

Lillie’s Career started with domestic work, moving forward to W.T. Grant Department Store working at the cafeteria lunch counter serving extremely tasteful meals to the white customers. Charlie was a factory worker then became an entrepreneur for various businesses. People admired the way she dressed her four daughters on Sundays as they wore their can~can dresses, especially during the Easter season. The girls looked forward to the big box of clothing given to them annually by Mrs. Redding. Lillie Mae loved the Christmas holidays for she made sacrifices to ensure that her girls were showered with gifts abundantly every Christmas season.

As time passed on, she moved to Sparta and lived near her mother in the Hickory Grove Community for several years. Her growth of flowers was astonishing, which illustrated her love for

flowers. They were presented all around the home. She loved cooking, specially making her specialty banana pudding. She indulged in her hobbies frequently completing word search puzzles, picture puzzles, fishing, and card playing.

As time moved forward it granted her the opportunity to move back to Macon to spend time with her children, especially her grandchildren. In a quote made by Valeria in remembrance of her mother she stated in a Facebook post: The mother chosen by God to bring forth 4 daughters Valeria, Gladys, Joann, and Charlie Ruth. We have life because of his love and plan for our lives. I am grateful for the good memories of a mother who cooked great meals and was the first black to work the counter at W.T. Grant downtown Macon. She worked to give us the best. Though she faced many challenges in life, she became a conqueror. Her familiar words were, “I’m always praying for you girls”, so thankful that God heard her prayers and is still answering with loving memories. She passed away December 1, 1998.

George is the seventh child of Hattie and Amos. He was born July 13, 1934. He was the fifth and youngest son to carry the Evans name. He was reared and educated in Sparta, Georgia where he attended Bethlehem Community School. In his youth he adored spending quality time doing crafty things with his father. He farmed with him plus obtained the hobby of going fishing frequently to sooth their souls during the busy days that created enjoyable moments after working on completed chores.

As years progressed, he met and spent time with a young lady named Atline Berry. After a sincere courtship they were married. In this union six children were born: Hattie, George Jr. Willie (Deceased), Jacqueline (Deceased), Jeanette, and Sakethia. He also had another son Raymond Clayton (Deceased). George had the skill of pulp wooding then moved forward in working at the Edward Lumber Company for many years. He passed away July 13, 1976. Atline worked fiercely as she cared for and nurtured her children until her health failed. She was able to see all her children graduate from Washington County High School in Sandersville, Ga. She passed away on August 26, 1986. After her death the children went into their own individual world. Yet after the passing of Willie the second eldest son a serious but stronger bond was recreated. They grew closer than ever that visibly and most humbling still exists today with frequent family gatherings, retreats, and vacations. What a blessing.

Lillie Pearl Evans Stewart

Lillie Pearl is the youngest of Amos and Hattie. She was reared and educated in Bethlehem Community Schools in Hancock County Sparta, Ga. As a child she started her traveling journeys to Macon and Atlanta by train and bus at age 8. This sparked her desire to keep her bags always packed. She continued her studies at the L.S. Ingraham High School where she was a graduate of 29 students in 1956. Because she was the youngest at a 20~year gap from the oldest, they kept her well~dressed which has impacted her in always making a fashionable statement. She met Clarence Stewart, married him in 1956. In this union 4 children were born: Cynthia, Teressa, Felecia, and Michael. They were both members of the Hickory Grove Baptist Church. She graces the church as a vocalist in the choir beginning at age11 and throughout the course of her life sparked invitations from other church choirs to come and play a part of their singing groups as well. Not just Hickory Grove choir, but Springfield, Beulah, Macedonia Inspirational Choir, and the Soul Ensemble Community Choir for many years.

As a member of Hickory Grove church, she lived to see several pastors to lead the congregation: Rev. E. McClendon, Rev. W. Roberts, Rev. R.E. Edwards, Rev. J A. Bryant, Rev. Dante Smith and now Rev. Michael Curry. She presently serves on the Deaconess Board there. Through spiritual teachings and conviction, she works to spread the word of God’s love for one another and demonstrates how we should love and help serve one another faithfully and justifiably. She became a sort out seamstress while being employed at the Quality Cleaners and was later hired at Duckworth Factory for 4 years. Because of her gift and crafts in working in the church, she became employed in the Hancock County School System for 44 years, Kindergarten, Pre~ K, and Grand~Parent Program. She is a member of the Retired teachers Association on the state level and served as a Local System Representative. She is also a member of the Second Shiloh Association and the General Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia (GMBC).

After retirement she became an avid traveler. Some examples of her traveling experiences have been to the Bahamas, Mexico, Honduras, Rio, de Janeiro, Hawaii, and other places throughout the United States. Her hobbies include fishing, traveling, shopping, word search puzzling, cooking, creating innovative things, establishing family gatherings, loving and supporting her children, grands, and great~grands, in conjunction to meeting the needs of others. She has tons of Godchildren. She believes in exposure not just for her but her children and grands. She’s stated life exposure is the best lesson to learn, not just through traveling but through other things like becoming familiar with cultural arts and expanding your education. She often indicated having a good education brings on a better way of life. “I only got a high school education, yet I want my children and those under me to get more than I did.” She has seen her desires take fruition. In her life span as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she has seen: 13 high school graduations, 6 college bachelor’s degree graduations, 4 master’s degree graduations, 2 Specialist Degree graduations, and 1 Doctoral Degree graduation (her seeds) totaling 26 family graduations in her eyes. She is one who believes in being the best you can be. Pearl, a mother, grandmother, great~grandmother godmother, and mother too many she calls her children often tells them all too always do your best in the day God gives you. Her motto is: “Never put off tomorrow what you can do today, because God gives you opportunities for a purpose. Live your life to the fullest and you will be reward.”
