March 13, 2019 Greeting Blue Bears: On behalf of the LCNAA administrative staff, it is a pleasure to welcome you to our Annual National Conference in Augusta, GA. The host committee, under the leadership of Millicent West and local chapter president, Pat Jennings, has prepared a wonderful stay in their city. This conference, complete with work shops and a business session, is set to continue the processes and planning, set forth by this administration last year in Fayetteville, NC. It is important now, more than ever, that we meet the challenges that remain to continue support of LCNAA and the college. This weekend will blend the association, the college and students, as one body with three common goals established to enhance the sustainability of Livingstone College. I am encouraged about our alumni that have come forward this past year, to contribute their talents to the future of LCNAA. This is our time to continue to grow as an association and make sound decisions for the future. “Blue Bears Forever!

Office of the President
March 28, 2019
Greetings Alumni: What an incredible year it has been thus far as we celebrate the 140th anniversary of Livingstone College. We kicked off our celebration on Founder’s Day in February when we raised an impressive $3.3 million in philanthropic support with $200,000 of those dollars going toward scholarships for our Tom Joyner School of the Month campaign, in which all monies raised are returned to Livingstone. Nationally syndicated radio host Tom Joyner, our Founder’s Day keynote speaker, has repeatedly said through his national platform that he had never witnessed anything like that before, referring to the generous outpouring of support from alumni, board members and AME Zion bishops and officers. That statement carries tremendous weight from a man who has supported HBCUs for more than 20 years. Additionally, we made on-air presentations at the Tom Joyner Sky Show in Charlotte during the CIAA tournament; and we were featured on WBTV’s Morning Break during tournament week due to our men’s basketball team earning the Highest GPA Award among CIAA-member institutions. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., in partnership with the Educational Advancement Foundation, also made February sweeter by pledging a $100,000 endowment to Livingstone and presenting us with the first $50,000 installment. We are thankful to those of you who have given of your time, resources and talent to advance the college’s mission and urge others to be so ever inspired. One way you could give back is by becoming a certified alumni recruiter. The Office of Alumni Affairs has developed a Certified Alumni Recruitment Program that equips you, our greatest commodity, with the credentials to officially recruit students on behalf of the institution. We are proud of this program and hope you will sign up to become certified. Please see Miss Vincia Miller, director of Alumni Affairs, for more information. Our students are making strides academically, athletically and socially, reflecting our holistic model approach to education. I want you to know that we are prudent in our efforts to ensure the sustainability of Livingstone by maximizing resources and opportunities. My office is always open to hear from you on how to further make Livingstone College a top destination for scholars. In the spirit of the LCNAA motto: “Blue Bears Forever!”
Respectfully,
Jimmy R. Jenkins, Sr., Ph.D. President

Cynthia Darnell Reinhardt Warren Arrington gave an overview of the meeting format. He encouraged attendees to take notes to take back to their chapters 9:30-10:30................................................................................................................................................. Workshop LCNAA Student -Alumni Engagement Jim Gray – Strategic Planning / Student Affairs Dr. Gray introduced his workshop on Student Engagement. He challenged the alumni to take it seriously and think outside the box to create a statement. Dr. Gray presented a Powerpoint. Integrated System that was launched six years ago. However, this concept did not succeed. There are several technology methods to reach out to students, i.e. conference call, Skype, facetime. We must create a resolution to solidify this concept. The Washington Area Chapter conducted a pilot called The Student–Alumni Relations Rep (SARR) Pilot Project. A student was identified to be a liaison between students and alumni.
Marshall Jackson described an idea for establishing a “Student of the Month.” (See minutes from Homecoming or a conference call). Marshall donated $1,000.00 towards this concept. The Student Government (SGA) president was approached to develop criteria to assist in identifying a student to participate each month. Carol McCauley described the concept of “The Gathering Bench.” During the late 90’s at Livingstone the students described a bench that was identified on campus as “The Gathering Bench” where everyone signed their names. The students made many lasting friendships beyond graduation. Every Homecoming the graduates went to that bench and met current students. Stephanie Jones, The Success Center and the Academic Recovery Act. Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins created “The “Academic Recovery Academy.” Initially, there were 60 at-risk students. Of the 60 students, 43 successfully raised their GPA which allowed them to remain at Livingstone College. There are 37 students that have a good chance that they will make it to the fall semester. Stephanie appealed to this alumni to adopt one student and once per week touch bases to encourage and mentor them for the rest of the semester. It has been proven that when a student has a mentor, there is an 83% success rate. Currently, there are 22 females and 12 males. Stephanie also appealed to the alumni concerning the Blue Bear Ambassadors. There are 36 peer ambassadors this school year. She asked alumni to purchase a blazer for this elite group. The cost is $150.00. Alumni can use various kinds of payment methods. What do we do going forward to make the SARR concept a reality? Write down two or three ideas of what we can use as strategies that can be effective. Jim reminded the membership of the three goals that were set forth by the current LCNAA administration: ✓ Increase charitable giving ✓ Grow membership ✓ Increase student engagement (We need a President’s Roundtable to share what was, what is and what can be done to strengthen the Chapter President’s Forum.) Warren highlighted the need to continue to reach out to the students. When chapters sponsor events, reach out to students. He urged the chapters to connect with the students during football and basketball season when games are scheduled in a chapter area, etc. come to chapter areas, as well as choir, etc. 10:30 am - 11:00 am
Break
Warren acknowledged and thanked all who helped with organizing this meeting. Bruce Stanback appealed to the membership to continue to vote for LC for the “Retool Your School” online award to receive a grant for $30,000. Bruce announced that Livingstone is currently second place. He urged the alumni to vote, vote, and vote!!!!!!!! This will allow LC to receive $30,000 for campus beautification. 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
LCNAA Website Development Public Relations – Nigel Alston
For this session, Warren asked for suggestions for the Public Relations Committee.
The “Blue Bear Update”: Alumni were urged to submit your email addresses, if you are not receiving the “Pebbles” newsletter produced by Kimberly Hearn, Director of Public Relations for the college. The newsletter is sent to all alumni. Livingstone’s Queen Contest for the CIAA basketball tournament made a great showing. Please participate by voting. There is a 20% to 22 % return for incorrect addresses for the “Blue Bear.” Warren asked that chapters to also send Nigel information about chapter activities. LCNAA Website: There is a link to the website, but not fully functional. Two proposals one for $2,500 and $3,150. We are waiting for the third website proposal. On Saturday, membership was asked to submit suggestions on what we want to see on the website. There is a site, www.lcnaa.com, but there is a limit to what can be posted. Members can post suggestions on this site. The Association has evolved through technology, to register and make payments, but now we need to catch up to the LC website. Suggestions from the floor. 1. Marshall would like to see a section for members to update personal information. 2. For Financial Secretary, Treasurer and Membership Chairpersons to be able to input information. 3. There needs to be general information on how to become a LCNAA member. 4. There should be a function for class agents to send to class members updated information. 5. Include a secured link for online voting. 6. Include Homecoming Order Forms. 7. Include Registration Forms for Spring Meeting. ***Q. What about a Life Member that does not have a number? A. The system has a control number to identify the member. 8. Have a map locator so that chapters’ potential members can search for a chapter near then. *** Accolades to WAC for purchasing stand-up banners for recruitment. There are catalogs available for chapters to take back to their meeting. ***There were students that were invited to attend this meeting. There was a scheduling conflict.

Financial Workshop Marshall Jackson, Treasurer
Marshall presented the report. The presentation centered on IRS tax laws and changes that have been enacted recently. Marshall explained in detail information for chapters to be knowledgeable of the tax laws and what chapters need to do. Chapters need to have a constitution (See past info. on 501c3 LCNAA individual chapter info), EIN#, and 501c3 documents. Marshall communicated to new chapters what they need to do. Chapters must have an EIN number, Constitution and 501c3 status. Chapters can be a subchapter under LCNAA. Marshall will send this report via email. Chapters would follow-up with keeping up with tax-exempt, they would save more money. Q. How many active chapters are there? A. 13 paid assessment for this fiscal year. Chapters must complete a 990-form every three years or the chapter loses the tax exempt status. That is if the chapter raised more than $50,000. If the chapter has raised less than $50,000, a 990z must be completed. Regardless of how you got the tax-exempt number, chapters must complete a 990. Note: Please consult Marshall for additional details to ensure that the chapters are in compliance. The challenge of the Executive Board is increasing membership in LCNAA.

Warren H. Arrington, Jr, President, LCNAA Jackie Thompson-Matthews, Financial Secretary, LCNAA From: Marshall L. Jackson, Treasurer Date: Feb 7, 2019 Re: FY 2019 Financial Report Feb 28, 2019
LCNAA ended February 28, 2019 with $36,380.78 in our checking account, $9,433.60 in our savings account and $70,972.88 in a New 19-month CD for a total of $116,787.26. The previous CD was a 5-year CD at an interest rate of 0.5%. We rolled over that CD into a 19 month CD at an interest rate of 2.62% at NO COST! We had about 2 years left on the 5 year. As has been previously approved, net profit from homecomings are to be transferred to LCNAA’s Endowed Scholarship at the Foundation of the Carolinas. The approved distribution of these funds is 75% toward the spendable and 25% to the principal balance. Included in the checking account balance is $12,761.41 that represent the net profit from Homecoming 2018 that needs to be transferred to the endowed scholarship. All funds are in our accounts at First Citizens Bank. As a reminder, saving account funds and CD’s are for operating expenses only. LCNAA SPRING CONFERENCE 2019 President’s Report
Overview, objectives and accomplishments 2018-2019
Warren H. Arrington, Jr. President LCNAA
3/30/2019
LCNAA SPRING CONFERENCE 2019 President’s Report Last year at the 2018 Spring Conference, there were three goals presented to the Executive Committee and the membership. We asked that all chapters and committees focus on student engagement, increase membership and scholarship giving. These activities have been established and still need continuous improvement. I ask that more volunteers are needed to implement action. OBJECTIVES As president of LCNAA, my objectives are as follows: •
Continue to focus on student engagement.
•
Establish a new LCNAA website that is more interactive for all association members.
•
Engage with alumni in all geographical regions. This will help increase membership and chapters.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS •
Student Engagement Implemented the “Sweat Mop Crew” at all Livingstone College Basketball games. A crew ( 2 students) was selected at each game by SGA president. Each crew was given a $25.00 gift certificate from the LCNAA credit card Reward Account. LCNAA earns gift cards instead of cash. Attended all LC convocations that were for students. Engaged with students in our local chapter events that involved feeding sports teams, inviting the concert choir and Jazz Ensemble. Livingstone College sponsored a table at the North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus Foundation, Inc Annual Scholarship Banquet. Livingstone had the SGA president and his cabinet at the banquet. Livingstone students have attended the past 3 years. The NCLBCF gives $10,000.00 worth of scholarships to students from North Carolina to the 10 HBCU schools here.
•
Increased Membership Engaged with alumni in areas that did not have a chapter. Contacted Dallas, TX, Burlington, NC and Miami, FL, and established 2 new chapters this year. Established a new chapter in south central North Carolina. Also, reached out to chapters that have not been active, to energize their members.
•
Increased Scholarship Continued to encourage giving to our National Association and increase scholarships at the local chapters. Approved the moving of LCNAA CD’s to a higher interest-bearing account. Attended the following events: 4/18/18
Samuel Duncan Honors Convocation Presented LCNAA scholarships

Fundraising Report Livingstone College National Alumni Association March 18, 2019 I wish to make the following report for National Fundraising. During Homecoming 2016, I introduced a Model for Rolling for Dollars in Higher Education – A bowling project with corporate sponsorship. The Charlotte Alumni set up the initial project for April 2017. This event was to be hosted at 10 Park Lanes. In view of two commitments sponsored by the Charlotte Alumni; the event was postponed until April 2018. We made several attempts to meet with new management to discuss the project and launch the bowling fundraiser. New Management wasn’t willing to host this event initially schedule the previous year. Please see the attached forms. This project – Rolling for Dollars in Higher Education has been launched effectively in four venues, and has the potential to yield $80,000 in revenue with a corporate structure. I met with the Statesville Chapter on Sunday, January 27, 2019, and introduced Men Who Cook Fundraiser. This is a model used with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and has been very successful in three markets. I wish to provide an overview of the Charleston UNCF Market. • • • • • • • • •
Strive to achieve very little overhead The Charleston Culinary School was used; least expensive, and could accommodate over 500 people. Fifty (50) Men who cook; some chefs of local restaurants participated Food was donated by each chef Food was completely prepared upon arrival Most chefs had their own Chafing Stands, and other utensils for serving Charleston Utilities donated all the paper goods This event was hosted by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sororities, Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sororities, Inc. The two sororities raised in excess of $28,000. There are five UNCF schools in South Carolina; therefore, we used the Gospel Choir or Concert Choir from the various UNCF schools to showcase the schools, and provide entertainment. This event – “Men Who Cook” was well attended.
I am available to present various fundraising events/Galas to the various chapters, or meet early in the fall – a year in advance to present a National Project. Respectfully submitted, Willie J. Tabor
Livingstone College National Alumni Association 2019 PROGRAM AWARDS COMMITTEE REPORT The 2018 LCNAA Award Nominations Packet was distributed via email to Alumni Affairs and the chapter presidents on August 20, 2018 with subsequent reminder emails sent regarding the deadline for submission. As a result of the committee recommendations at the 2018 Spring Meeting and approval by the alumni members in attendance, the 2018 awards packet included forms for the Distinguished Achievement Medallion, Meritorious Service Award, the Merit Award for Chapters. Additionally, nomination forms for the following new awards were added: the Delores M. Johnson Award and the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award. The new President’s Award nomination form was not distributed as it is decided by the sitting LCNAA President. The following award nominations were received from the chapters: • • • • •
Meritorious Service Award – 2 nominations Outstanding Recent Alumni Award - 1 nomination Delores M. Johnson Memorial Award – 1 nomination The Distinguished Achievement Medal – 1 nomination Merit Award for Chapters – 3 nominations
The Meritorious Service Award was not awarded because neither nominee fulfilled the requirements of the category. The physical awards selected for each category are as follows: •
Meritorious Service Award: Laser etched crystal plate on stand in velvet lined case.
•
Distinguished Achievement Medal: Gold medal on blue and white ribbon encased in velvet lined shadow box.
•
Merit Award for Chapters: Crystal trophy vase on wood base. This award is kept in the Alumni Affairs office and presented to the winning chapter each year. In addition, the winning chapter received a certificate.

•
Outstanding Recent Alumni Award: An 11” tall laser etched crystal trophy on blue and clear stand.
•
President’s Award: An 8” tall abstract trophy (five people figures with joined arms) on 4” marble base.
The fillable forms were not used this year but it has been recommended that we bring back the fillable form. Due to the early date of Homecoming, the date to submit the nominations was changed to Saturday, September 29th instead of October 1st. We will continue to encourage chapters to submit nominations as it is our goal to increase the number of nominations received in each category to ensure that those members and chapters who bring honor and fame to Livingstone through personal achievements and devoted service are appropriately recognized.
The LCNAA Program Awards Committee assisted President Arrington in the selection of an appropriate recognition for Coach James Stinson in recognition of his stellar record of having the highest wins in CIAA Basketball and guiding student athletes who have consistently demonstrated the highest GPA in the CIAA. This was presented at the 2018 Spring Meeting. The committee recommended that the name of the committee be changed from the Program Awards Committee to the Awards and Recognitions Committee. This recommendation is pending review in order to align with the LCNAA Constitution. The LCNAA Program Awards Committee members are Millicent E. West, Chairperson; Traci Jeter Bates; Linda Mingo, Eugene Stitt, and Leonard Sparkman. Respectfully submitted, Millicent E. West, ‘79 Awards/Program Committee Chairperson

March 2019 Strategic Plan Committee Report Livingstone College National Alumni Association Augusta Chapter - Augusta, Georgia
The intention of this report is to set a strategic tone in the discourse that will unfold at the March 2019 LCNAA Annual Spring Meeting. As is always the case, the challenge in each ensuing program year is to keep our performance goals front and center as we go about the business of thoughtful planning, sound decision-making, measured allocation of resources, and making strategic use of our vast human capital. Hence, sound leadership and vision remain prominent aspects of our organizational success going forward. As the Association prepares to embrace another election cycle and a new incoming administration, let us not forget that we have a clear mandate for carrying out a viable business agenda fixed around three well-established performance-driven goals aimed at improving longterm organizational performance: (1) increased charitable giving; (2) expanded national and local membership growth; and (3) enhanced student engagement. LCNAA has fairly well-defined mission, vision, and value statements, therefore in opening its 2019 Annual Spring Meeting it is advisable to review these statements to provide the broader context for conducting old and new business. Which means, to the extent practical, strategically evaluating the soundness of all recommended actions, suggestions, and programmatic considerations against these value statements. The performance goals – and the programs and activities designed to achieve them – establish the roadmap to our growth and what we accomplish in any given program year. As well as form the cornerstone for major strategic progress and organizational successes. Together these strategic plan development components constitute an effective accountability system that serve to enhance organizational effectiveness. As we proceed forward it is important that everyone understands the importance of the three strategic planning program goals in shaping the outcome of 2019 Spring Meeting and building a strong vibrant and vital alumni community.

ALMA MATER
Alma Mater MY LIVINGSTONE O Livingstone, my Livingstone! Thy dear old name we sing, While memories cluster thick and fast, And closer to us cling. Beneath thy maples and thy oaks The zephyred breezes blow, Just as they will in years to come No matter where we go. O Livingstone, my Livingstone! When thou art old with age, Perhaps thou, too, shalt hold a place That‟s bright on mem’ry’s page, And in the sky no cloud shall be Instead, thy sun shall beam Prosperity shall live always Amid its golden gleam. O Livingstone, my Livingstone! Thy students come and go, The moments fly, the years go by With all their weal and woe, Along with fleet and nimble feet Oh, hasten on the way, And fling the light of wisdom out Across the Wand’rer’s way. O Livingstone, my Livingstone! Upon thy campus wide, In numbers many students roam, Some from the otherside; And still they love; we can but hope That they may e’er be true To both thy names and colors too The modest black and blue
