Welcome to the ARUNDEL Festival 2010 On behalf of myself and my committee, I welcome you to the Arundel Festival 2010. This year we are pleased to announce that Arundel Festival Ltd has recently obtained charitable status, which is in recognition of the many free events we include and the promotion of the arts for the public benefit. Together with other organisations and sponsors, we hope we have created a wide variety of entertainments both for Arundel residents and for visitors to our little town. Please browse through this programme and you are bound to find something you will enjoy.

BIll Beere Chairman of Arundel Festival

This year’s Arundel Festival will be a landmark cultural event – full of its traditional creative energy while setting a new mood. We are delighted, once again, to present a superb programme of music, theatre, art and sculpture which harnesses exciting talent from all over the country. But 2010 will see a distinct and deliberate change of tone from the blockbuster era as we seek to chime with these difficult economic times. The result is a programme which aims for a more intimate atmosphere, with beautifully crafted smaller scale productions of Shakespeare and opera plus a classic evening of Broadway music. Of course, Arundel Castle continues to provide a sublime setting for these productions and we are proud that the Castle is at the heart of a Festival which draws so many visitors to our wonderful historic town each August. My sincere thanks go to the Arundel Festival Committee and all participants for their hard work and dedication in delivering this event for our community. Please do come and join us – we value your support and enjoyment of this magical event.

Puccini’s Tosca With Candlelight Opera & the Candlelight Chamber Orchestra In the Barons’ Hall at Arundel Castle Based on a play by Sardou, originally written for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt, Puccini’s Tosca tells a tragic and passionate tale of love, lust, politics & art at a time of war. Candlelight Opera’s glamorous and beautifully costumed production promises to transport you to Rome in 1800 as Napoleon was tightening his grip on Europe.

Floria Tosca, a prima donna, pursued by Scarpia, chief of the Roman police, finds herself caught in a complex web of deception in which she tries and fails to save her love, the painter and liberal patriot Mario Cavaradossi. Glorious, luscious music and a thrilling, unexpected storyline have made Puccini’s Tosca a favourite ever since its first performance 100 years ago.

Music Around Town Once again we've put together a very exciting programme featuring some of Britain's best performers. Since some of the venues are quite small, there is a limited number of tickets so early booking is recommended. Arundel Music is very grateful for financial support from the West Sussex County Council and the Performing Rights Society, as well as from our generous sponsors - Neil Holland Architects. We are also very grateful to venue owners for hosting events. Sat 21st August – 7.30 pm – St. Nicholas Church – £12

She was awarded the ‘Distinguished Artist’ Prize at the Bellini International Vocal Competition in Italy in 2008. She is joined by Christopher Gould, winner of the accompaniment prize in the 2001 Wigmore International Song Competition, in a programme that includes Schumann’s great song cycle ‘Frauenliebe und Leben’ as well as songs by Strauss, Turina, Jonathan Dove and Hugh Wood.

Sun 22nd August – 10.00 am – St. Nicholas Church

FESTIVAL SERVICE Celebrant and Preacher: The Rt. Revd. David Farrer, Vicar of Arundel. Choir of St. Nicholas Church. Joss Peach – piano Music to include Bob Chilcott’s ‘A Little Jazz Mass’.

CoMA SUSSEX CoMA ensembles are a network of amateur music groups that encourage and provide opportunities for musicians of all abilities to take part in contemporary music making. CoMA Sussex returns to Arundel following their memorable appearance in Stephen Montague's 'Dark Sun' in 2009. The centrepiece is Philip Cashian's 'The Star Machine', one of many CoMA commissions that is both artistically challenging and suited to the technical abilities of amateur ensembles. They will also be performing works written by ensemble members, including music director Adam Swayne's 'Many Dark Actors Playing Games'.

Mon 23rd August – 6.00pm – 57 Maltravers St – £8 Travellers’ Tales I

PERFECT NIGHT A talk by Peter Grimsdale Peter Grimsdale is an award winning television producer who went to Sri Lanka to make a film for the BBC following the 1983 riots. He kept a diary of those times and wrote his first book, ‘Perfect Night’ (Orion 2008), to say what the film could not. Peter is interested in what happens when ordinary people are put under extreme pressure and this is both a taut thriller and a humane account of one man’s dilemma. In ‘Just Watch Me’ (Orion 2009) a soldier returns to Sussex from Afghanistan only to witness the sudden death of his family, a horror that leads him to Tobago and back to Afghanistan. The sense of place and atmosphere of fear in both novels is very real.

Thurs 26th August – 12.00 noon – 2.00pm – 57 Maltravers St – £10 to include sausage and sauvignon Travellers’ Tales II

THE ENGLISH ABROAD A recitation by James McKay Poet and reciter James McKay presents substantial extracts from two long nineteenth-century poems of the Grand Tour. In A. H. Clough’s epistolary verse novel, ‘Amours de Voyage’ (1849), an intense young don faces a crisis of faith, class and aesthetics while travelling in Italy among a party of English tourists. This is one of the only poems in English that attempts the metre of Homer and Virgil and achieves any degree of success. Byron began Canto 2 of ‘Don Juan’ in Venice in 1818, thirty years old and desperately nostalgic for the travels he made in his early twenties. The adventures of our eponymous hero, shipwrecked on a Greek island with only a nubile pirate’s daughter for company, epitomise the pull that Mediterranean climate, culture and sensuality continues to exert on northern Europeans.

Fri 27th August – 10.00am – 12 noon – Arundel Castle – £25 (The ticket allows the bearer to remain in the Castle and grounds all day.)

Scored for solo tenor (representing the fallen), female chorus (representing the mothers, wives and daughters left behind) and chamber orchestra, it promises to be a moving tribute to the 55,000 men whose lives were lost. The concert also includes a performance by Andrew Mackenzie-Wicks of Vaughan Williams’ great song cycle ‘On Wenlock Edge’, a setting of six haunting lyrics by A.E.Housman whose themes of loss and impermanence can be seen as a prophecy of the horrors of the First World War.

FESTIVAL THEATRE TRAIL & EVENING PLAY 2010 Saturday August 21st to Saturday August 28th at various venues around the town Now in its 10th year, the Theatre Trail, conceived and produced by Drip Action Theatre Company, continues to grow in popularity. Now firmly established as an integral part of the Arundel Festival, it has staged over 500 performances of one-act plays in venues as various at private houses, restaurants, art galleries, gardens and Arundel Museum. The idea of the Trail is to enable audiences to see eight different plays in eight different venues over eight days of the Festival, perhaps taking in one or two a day, between, say, visiting exhibitions in the Art Trail, going to the Flower Show, listening to a lunchtime concert, and indeed having lunch! The Company, as ever keen to promote new and surprising drama, each year invites writers, from this country and beyond, to submit a play for selection.

venue numbers are merely to identify each location, visitors are free to jump in at any point; they can do a few venues each day or just select the ones which are of interest and fit in with the time available. Each venue is clearly marked with a brightly coloured flag outside. Karin Moorhouse

Trail organiser Celia Henderson says "Why not plan a "Sussex in Style" day to include seeing one of more Theatre Trail plays, some street entertainment or other festival event as well as the Gallery Trail, not forgetting the many shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants and pubs we have here." Visitors can take part and nominate their favourite artist for the 2010 Derek Davis Prize. Derek was an international artist based in Arundel since 1950, who was one of the original founders of the Trail with Oliver Hawkins, Ann Sutton and Renee Bodimeade. Celia Henderson continues "I would like to thank our 2010 sponsors for their generosity in supporting this wonderful art event, which is open to all and free for visitors to enjoy." Andrew Borely

Each year the Trail is organised by a small group of volunteers however many of its elements would not be possible without the generous support of our 2010 sponsors; Neil Holland Architects, Andrew Borley Architects, Amplifier PR and Arundel.org.uk You can pick up your Trail map at any venue, it shows examples of exhibitors work. Use it to plan your art adventure or simply join the Trail at any point on the route, just look out for the Trail flags. Have a wonderful time discovering the enormous talent that is the hallmark of this famous art trail...
