Welcome to the ARUNDEL Festival 2011 The Arundel Festival is now in its 34th year and once again it is wonderful to be part of a varied programme of entertainment and artistic attractions. For the first time we are delighted to welcome to the Castle’s Mill Road meadow fields the Arundel Festival marquee events and the innovative hot air balloon spectacular.

The backdrop of Arundel Castle yet again features as a dramatic setting for an evening of love songs in the Barons’ Hall and for Candlelight Opera’s rousing rendition of Donizetti’s popular comic opera, Don Pasquale. There will also be three evenings of Shakespeare in the setting of the Collector Earl’s Garden, performed by the GB Theatre Company.

Again, we are indebted to the Arundel Festival Committee and its many supporters for all their hard work and dedication. This superb event is always thoroughly enjoyed by both the local community and visitors to Arundel who, year after year, are presented with an exciting array of music, art, sculpture and theatre, for which we are all so grateful.

We very much hope you will come and support this year’s Festival.

We have more free entertainment and participation for all than ever before. We would like to say a BIG Thank you to the businesses, organisations and individuals who have contributed. As a charity run by volunteers, your financial contributions make the festival possible.

As well as a programme packed full of drama, music, art and community events for you to enjoy, the Festival plays an increasingly important role in bringing together the community and supporting local charities. In 2010 the Festival created the opportunity for local charities to raise over £20,000. So when you see a Rotarians, Scouts, the Lions or indeed the Festival’s own volunteers in the red t-shirts please give generously.

The English Mail Coach JAMES McKAY reads Thomas de Quincey’s largely forgotten 1849 masterpiece, The English Mail Coach – an essay in a style de Quincey described as “impassioned prose”, with a symphonic structure (including a splendidly involved fugue section). Its three parts begin with de Quincey’s fascinating historical notes on the mail coach system of his youth, turning at the hair-raising description of a near fatal crash before taking off into a delirious fusion of dreams, opium visions and memories.

A must for everyone who likes Coleridge’s Ryme of the Ancient Mariner – Coleridge and de Quincey were contemporaries and sometime friends, and had many interests and preoccupations in common – but finds it faintly unsatisfying.

There will be an interval during which wine and a ‘sandwich’ will be served.

Amazon's Work: The battle paintings of Lady Butler ELIZABETH BUTLER was briefly the most popular painter in England, her battle scenes causing a sensation in Victorian Britain. She was then forgotten for a hundred years. An illustrated lecture by her great-great nephew Oliver Hawkins, whose interest in her work began while studying art history at Cambridge. A Musician's Trail MEETING AT 57 MALTRAVERS STREET, 3 groups of 15 participants each will be taken by a guide to a series of 6 (secret) houses, five of which have never been entered by Art or Theatre Trailers, there to hear a piece of music played by a professional musician, each on a different instrument.

At the end of the Trail everyone, participants, musicians, householders and guides, will reunite at 57 Maltravers Street for wine and conversation.

nothing prepares you VIVIMARIE VANDERPOORTEN will read her poetry and talk about her influences.

Vivimarie is a poet of great sensitivity, as well as humour, who has lived through turbulent times, both personal and national, in her native Sri Lanka.

She is Senior Lecturer in Language Studies at the Open University of Sri Lanka and has just completed her doctoral thesis on language policy implementation and the politics of bilingual education at the University of Ulster.

Her first volume, nothing prepares you (2007), won her country’s most prestigious literary award and her second, stitch your eyelids up (2010), is written with the same economy of expression and emotional impact as the first.

Arundel Rocks A MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION of the geology of the South Downs by Dr. Peter Smith. Peter is a chartered geologist with wide experience in earth, environmental and marine sciences. As well as holding a number of supervisory positions in operating oil companies in the UK and Australia, he has taught and researched in universities in the UK and the USA and been involved in exploration and environmental projects from the Arctic to Australia. Wine will be served following the presentation.

Music for a Summer Evening Joanne Appleby and Andrew Rees will perform classics from opera, well known show songs and music from Puccini, Cole Porter, Mozart, Kurt Weill, Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Joanne Appleby, soprano studied opera at the Royal Northern College of Music and then won a scholarship from the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company before embarking on an operatic career.

Andrew Rees, the renowned Welsh tenor, began singing at a very early age, competing and winning Eisteddfods at National level both as a singer and a pianist.

Don Pasquale by Donizetti Comic Opera sung in English. Fully costumed and specially staged for the concert platform with The Candlelight Orchestra.

Don Pasquale has his mind set on disinheriting his nephew Ernesto and getting himself some heirs of his own. Not only has Pasquale denied his nephew his inheritance, he has also denied him permission to marry his love Norina. So, as part of a plot, Norina gets together with Dr Maletesta and poses as the eligible wife to be, but before the ink is dry on the marriage documents, Norina begins to make Pasquale’s life utterly impossible until he is practically begging Ernesto to take her off his hands.

Candlelight Opera specialise in producing special opera events inside some of the most beautiful historic houses and period venues in and around the UK. Amongst a brutality beyond memory, grows a love beyond existence. The play deals with love conquering hate. The two lovers are surrounded by an anger and aggression that has lost all reason. Juliet and Romeo’s love for one another proves stronger than this loathing. It is the catalyst for the laying down of arms, and leads both households towards a new era of tolerance.

Romeo & Juliet The Collector Earl’s Garden The Collector Earl’s Garden at Arundel Castle provides a magnificent and idyllic setting for Shakespeare’s plays. The garden, an evocation of a Jacobean garden, is a light-hearted tribute to Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel (1585-1646), known as 'The Collector'. The grand centrepiece is the rock work 'mountain' planted with palms and rare ferns to represent another world, and supporting a green oak version of 'Oberon's Palace', a fantastic spectacle designed by Inigo Jones for Prince Henry's Masque on New Year's Day 1611.

Festival 11 at Jubilee Gardens The events at Jubilee Gardens are now in their fourth year and it just keeps getting bigger and better. Festival 11 has an amazing array of performances for you, from local young bands to seasoned professionals and performers right on the edge of big future success.

Now in its eleventh year, Drip Action’s innovative Theatre Trail goes from strength to strength and will once again deliver 8 new plays in 8 venues across the town on each of its 8 day run.

The event is an essential part of the South's art calendar, drawing together a wide range of established artists as well as showcasing much unknown local talent.

The Trail draws over 10,000 visitors. Be prepared to discover all styles of art and media including paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, decoupage, stained glass and jewellery.

Bayleaf Brass Quintet Bayleaf Brass is a professional standard brass quintet from West Sussex, operating in the south of England. The group has a large array of concert experience as well as performing at a whole variety of private functions including garden parties, fetes and even the opening of a yacht club.

In 2008 Bayleaf won the Arun Young Musician of the Year ensemble prize, and have since performed at various concerts all over Sussex. In 2009 and 2010, they qualified for the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth, and played in the Adrian Boult Hall at the Birmingham Conservatoire. In light of the bands success, the Junior Guildhall School of Music offered to coach the ensemble. Open Singing Auditions for the 'Jubilee Gardens Childrens Choirs' For the first time ever, children from the ages of 5 to 16 are being invited to X-Factor style auditions at the Victoria Institute for the opportunity to perform in live professional performances on the big stage at Jubilee Gardens on the first (Saturday 20th August) and last day (Bank Holiday Monday 29th August) of the Arundel Festival.

The children will be able to audition as soloists or in groups and are required to sing one part of any style of song!

All children will be involved and grouped into choirs, small groups and as soloists and some will perform with a professional band. We are hoping to make this a yearly event and all children will receive a certificate, medal or trophy, awarded by the Arundel Town Crier. There will be free workshops in the Summer holidays (Weds 27th through to Fri 29th July) to prepare for the big performances.

Arundel Bath Tub Race This is a festival event not to be missed! (At an earlier date this year because of the tides). Plenty of family entertainment running all day, such as a DJ, bouncy castle, exhibits from Amberley Working Museum, craft stalls, and a barbecue.

Recycled Sculpture Challenge On display throughout the Arundel Festival around the town.

Better Tomorrows has been established as a vehicle to drive forward behavioural and cultural change within the community in order to meet the requirements of living our lives in a more sustainable manner. To support their aims, we have selected a few sculptures from the 2011 Recycling Sculpture Challenge Competition which took place in June at the Cass Sculpture Foundation in Goodwood. The message is to stop putting valuable resource in the bin! Students from six colleges

Aurora Fireworks was created 11 years ago by its now managing director Robert Byles. Based in Wisborough Green, the family run company has grown continuously over the years. It is now conducting over 100 shows annually. 40 of these are during the 2 weeks around the bonfire night period.

Arundel 10k Run 1st Arundel Scout Group The Annual 10k race organised by 1st Arundel Scout Group will start in Arundel Town Centre, following a circuit of the town. Runners will enter the grounds of Arundel Castle by the lower gates, climb through the grounds, loop around the gallops and return back through the lower gates to the finish in the Town Square. The course is on a mixture of tarmac road (75%) and downland grass tracks (25%).

In the Town Square. Enjoy wandering around an array of stalls selling arts and crafts, whilst browsing Arundel’s wide range of shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs.

Listen to live music from the Alternatives. The Town centre will be closed for traffic so people can walk freely around the shops and stalls.

OPERA AT ARUNDEL CASTLE GALA CONCERT PERFORMANCE Monday 22nd August 2011

Music for a

Summer Evening in the Barons' Hall

Joanne Appleby and Andrew Rees will perform classics from opera, well known show songs and music from Puccini, Cole Porter, Mozart, Kurt Weill, Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Joanne Appleby, soprano, studied opera at the Royal Northern College of Music and then won a scholarship from the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company before embarking on an operatic career. She spent four years performing with the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Touring Opera, as well as singing at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall.

She was a member of the opera group Amici Forever for four years - visiting far flung corners of the world. Since then she has toured Australia, Dubai and New Zealand as a soloist with The Morriston Orpheus Male voice choir.

Joanne is currently back at Glyndebourne in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, but is greatly looking forward to her first performance in the stately Barons’ Hall at Arundel Castle.

Andrew Rees, the renowned Welsh tenor, began singing at a very early age, competing and winning Eisteddfods at National level both as a singer and a pianist.

After graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music, he studied opera in London before joining the renowned English National Opera as a principal tenor. Andrew has performed as a soloist at all the major concert venues in London and across the UK as well as live broadcasts on radio and television many times. He has also entertained in such diverse venues as on board The QE2, various outdoor ‘Proms in the Park’, the prestigious Henley Festival and at private functions.

Andrew has travelled widely with his operatic work and has taken lead roles in New Zealand, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal and across the UK. He too looks forward to his first performance in the Arundel Festival, performing alongside his wife, Joanne Appleby.

Don Pasquale

Comic Opera sung in English. Fully costumed and specially staged for the concert platform with The Candlelight Orchestra.

Don Pasquale has his mind set on disinheriting his nephew Ernesto and getting himself some heirs of his own. Not only has Pasquale denied his nephew his inheritance, he has also denied him permission to marry his love Norina. So, as part of a plot, Norina gets together with Dr Maletesta and poses as the eligible wife to be, but before the ink is dry on the marriage documents, Norina begins to make Pasquale’s life utterly impossible until he is practically begging Ernesto to take her off his hands.

Candlelight Opera specialise in producing special opera events inside some of the most beautiful historic houses and period venues in and around the UK. Each year, as part of the “Opera in the House” season, Candlelight organise a season of performances which include concerts and fully staged operas. Donizetti’s three-act masterpiece tells some eternal truths and has been called a story of love and laughter. The plots are thickly hatched – mostly at the expense of the wretched Don Pasquale who discovers, in true operatic style, that all is not what it seems.
