MARKET UPDATE Over the past 18 months it has obviously become harder for all businesses due to what was titled as a credit crunch and is now labelled as a recession. October and November of 2008 was a wash out for many companies and the reports from all sectors from Engineering and manufacturing through to service industries was concerning to say the least. The worst was feared by all and most people hit Christmas 2008 with worries of what the New Year would bring. In April our MP’s inadvertently brought a bit of breathing space to the publicity of the recession with the attention being on their exploits as opposed to the condition of the economy. Now that the papers are starting to return to the financial state of the country, what a difference this break for a few weeks appears to have made. Although we still hear of redundancies and closures we are now also getting expressions like green shoots and other motivating statements. The chances of Alistair Darling being correct in his statement of us getting out of the recession by December is still doubted by most but many businesses are looking up and moving forward again. As a pro active commercial agency we have definitely had to up our game to its maximum this last year to ensure that all possible opportunities of locating buyers or tenants for our clients properties have been explored but this has been successful . Sales and lettings on shops, offices and industrial units from 1000sq ft to 20,000sq ft have been tied up and we are still receiving daily demand. In fact we are now getting enquiries from some of the retail chains again looking to increase their National coverage which all but stopped at the end of 2008. Investors are definitely back in the market as shown on our front page editorial and these range from private individuals spending a few hundred thousand pounds to major companies with budgets of eight to ten million. Don’t get me wrong, we are not setting the world on fire with record figures and as stated above we are not saying that the market is by any means as buoyant as it was in 2006 but with hard work and determination it is not all doom and gloom. If you are looking to sell or let your property we will not make you any guarantees and the answer to how long will it take will still be the old expression ‘how long is a bit of string ?’ as we are not prepared to try and sell our services on false hopes.
