Jam Experiment

This year, it is our great pleasure to have a group of outstanding young musicians, Jam Experiment, as our first ever band-in-residence. Jam Experiment are a young jazz quintet now based in London, originally coming together at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester, now studying at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. They won the 2014 Jazz North Introduces Scheme, shortly after their debut gig supporting Liane Carroll. They have played at leading jazz festivals across the UK, leaving audiences in awe.

The line-up includes the winner of the inaugural BBC Young Musician Jazz Award (2014), saxophonist Alexander Bone, with Rory Ingham on trombone, Toby Comeau playing keyboards & piano, bassist Joe Lee and drummer Jonathan Mansfield. No less than Alan Barnes said this was “one of the best young bands...a band that swings, has great arrangements and knows how to present itself. A really refreshing presence on the scene.” This is what the band have to say: “We (Jam Experiment) are incredibly excited to be the resident band at the 2017 Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Festival! The festival will be featuring a fantastic selection of artists and events. We will be coming with music from our brand new debut album. We’ll be showcasing this on Friday lunchtime. On Saturday, we’ll be giving a seminar in the morning, collaborating with local up-and-coming musicians from Lancashire Youth Jazz Orchestra in the afternoon, and running a late night jam session. We culminate the residency with a masterclass on improvisation, held on the International Jazz Day. We are so eagerly anticipating our residency, which will be a weekend filled with live playing, educating, and collaborating. In support is the Blind Monk Trio, a band that put a fresh, modern spin on the classic chordless trio format, with influences from the whole history of the genre blended with dark cinematic grooves and eastern folk. The Seamus Blake Trio gig is part of the NORVOL International Touring Programme organised by Kim Macari of Orpheus Project, and is supported by Arts Council England.

The CD ‘Legentis’, recorded with this line-up, focusses on taking the emotions found in big film scores and condensing them to piano trio. A 30,000 year old flute found in Germany in 2008 would have played a pentatonic scale, showing that humans have had this music for longer than we have had writing, communal living, and agriculture. The Prehistoric Jazz Quintet is a group of well-established young jazz musicians, led by composer and pianist Misha Gray, whose original compositions explore these origins of music. Their style relies heavily on the musicians’ spontaneity and improvising skills, and the result is a lively combination of intense, intriguing and unique textures. Expect tracks from their new album, “Origin of the Species”. “(Misha Gray) has elements of the instrospection of a Bill Evans but is able to meld that with a seamless dynamic fire that reminded me of McCoy Tyner”. Join us for this non-stop musical improvisation. There will be a variety of musicians and a range of music styles dropping in throughout the event to jam with each other and create a unique musical narrative. Avant Garden is an evening of music performance with guest artists supported by our very own UCLan students from the BA (Hons) Music course, and guests, the Gary Boyle Band. Come and join us to hear this live music collaboration which will be something a little different to what you may be used to. An excellent evening of varied music-making, featuring the jazz-fusion guitar legend and ex-Isotope band leader Gary Boyle. A central figure in the British jazz-rock scene, Gary has had a very successful solo career since the late 70s and is popular wherever he appears. We are proud to welcome Gary at this inaugural Preston Jam. Supporting Gary Boyle is Cold Bath Street, a raging 4/5/6/7 piece band that builds grand music from small phrases, moving effortlessly between genres: not to be missed! Music & Freedom Symposium at UCLan is hosted by The Institute for Black Atlantic Research. This event unites distinguished international academics and dynamic Northern artistic and musical performers for a truly unique event. Leading Civil Rights scholar and author of the landmark text “Just My Soul Responding: Rhythm and Blues, Black Consciousness and Race Relations” Professor Brian Ward (Northumbria University) gives the keynote address on “Freedom Sounds: Music and the Civil Rights Movement”. The other academic speaker will be Dr. María Rocío Cobo Piñero (University of Cadiz) whose paper will look at 1920s Jazz and Spanish flappers. Our performance element will showcase the links cotton establishes in the nineteenth century between enslaved Africans and the Lancashire working class using song and dance. Django Reinhardt was one of the great improvisers of the swing era, with astonishing virtuosity, and arguably the first major non-American jazz artist and guitar hero. Django’s music fused American swing, classical music and gypsy music to create a unique sound, and he is venerated by a whole host of musicians from jazz greats like Duke Ellington and B.B.King to George Harrison and Willie Nelson. Professor Hampton-Reeves will discuss Django’s achievements and his influence on modern music. The talk will be illustrated by performances of Django’s music by The Wrong Notes, a quartet which specialises in Hot Clubstyle gypsy jazz.

Preston Jam brings the Flag Market to life with a Saturday afternoon of live music. The first Preston Jam – arranged jointly by UCLan and Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues – finishes in style! A packed evening will be showcasing some of the finest contemporary music talent bringing new influences to bear on the jazz idiom. First up, we welcome the funk brass grooves of Lancaster’s own Atomic Brass, “spicing up some covers whilst hitting you up with some of their own”. Winners of Lancaster Battle of the Bands 2016, this quintet will be rocking Venue 53 with their massive sound. Expect their unique jazz-funk (or ‘junk’) take on such classics as “Uptown Funk”, “I Feel Good” and “Valerie”. Get the Blessing wears its jazz credentials lightly but defiantly. They described themselves as “total outsiders” and “the punk entry” when they won the 2008 BBC Jazz Award for Best Album with “All Is Yes”. Four critically-acclaimed albums down the line, the same could still be said to hold true, albeit with a little more wisdom at their disposal. Their latest release “Astronautilus” is dedicated to the memory of legendary saxophone player Ornette Coleman, who passed away in June 2015. Coleman’s early work was pivotal to the band’s formation in 2000 and continues to inspire their boldly monophonic instrumentation. Get The Blessing also retain their original line-up, with the rock-solid rhythm section of Portishead duo Jim Barr and Clive Deamer supporting the sax/trumpet front line of Jake McMurchie and Pete Judge. Clitheroe’s main street will be buzzing on Saturday with our annual Street Festival - lively local bands entertaining shoppers and Jazz Festival visitors alike with music in a range of styles. Two marquees either side of Castle Street will host 6 bands throughout the day. First up is the well-known Clitheroe Royal Grammar School Swing Band, under the baton of their new director Greg Banks, with vocalist Arthur Geldard. This is an experienced swing band that has travelled abroad and produced a number of CDs. At 12noon come and have a calipso/soca street party with steel-pan band Pancake. Playing a variety of songs from classic Caribbean and Latin to pop covers, and featuring our very own Gary Ward (festival committee) on drums. Jazzy brass at 1pm a team of 10 young people from the Lancashire Music Service. It’s The Street Band. At 2pm Red Hot Drop takes the stage - a welcome return for this local 7-piece funk/soul/jazz band led by the excellent vocals of Abi Fielding. You’ll be dancing in the street to classics such as “I Feel Good” and “Nutbush”. 3pm: Worldwise Samba Drummers and the Preston Choir, share the main stage, both led by a very busy John Aveyard! At 4pm, the trademark yellow and purple suits can mean only one thing: Blowjangles are back in town, bringing the Street Festival to a close in style. After all, there are not many better ways to “Enjoy Yourself” than standing in front of the Castle Street marquee ready for a Blowjangles Concert!

Kicking off at 12noon is the York Music Forum Youth Jazz Orchestra, directed by Ian Chalk, making a Ribble Valley Jazz Festival debut. This band of young musicians will play tunes from their new CD, “Soundwave”. At 1pm while bands change over on the main stage, local singers The Grand Choir will keep you entertained. At 1.30pm we make way for Band Massive, a combination of two fine bands, East Lancashire’s The Jam Factory and North Lancashire’s Off The Rails. They come together under their directors Richard Ormerod and Ben McCabe to celebrate 20 years of performances. The Grand Choir sing more songs at 2.30pm. United Reformed Church is a good setting for an illustrated performance celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt by The Wrong Notes. This quartet specialises in Hot Club-style gypsy jazz. Django Reinhardt, one of the great improvisers of the swing era, was arguably the first major non-American jazz artist and guitar hero. Django’s music fused American swing, classical music and gypsy music to create a unique sound. He is venerated by a whole host of musicians from jazz greats including Duke Ellington, B.B.King, George Harrison & Willie Nelson. Professor Hampton-Reeves of University of Central Lancashire presents Django’s achievements and influences on music.

Willy Fluss’s Guitar Workshop: Accompanying a Singer on Solo Guitar

All attending musicians can have a play - Jam Experiment will play a tune or two of their own, probably from their debut album!
