The Soft Modern style has a bourgeois and suave personality. The delicate tones give the environment a comfortable flavour and the atmosphere acquires a reassuring quality, like an informal and cosy refuge. The light is warm and the shadows blend with the surfaces, reverberating textured and organic reflections. The space is resolved in a set of new textures that highlight and communicate with each other, evoking warm sensory sensations.

T
hese have been difficult years for everyone, but also very satisfying for Home Italia: we have grown and, finally, we are recognized internationally as a General Contractor. At the end of 2021 we took part in the Global Business Summit in Dubai: an event where the world’s most important politicians and entrepreneurs meet to present new businesses and create working synergies. On this occasion we were invited to present our format and were approached by investors from various countries, including Dubai, India, Bangladesh, New Jersey and Canada. Immediately afterwards, we participated in the FITCE in Fort Lauderdale, the headquarters and second house of Home Italia, renewing our presence in Florida, a country of reference for us, along with China and Europe, for the contract sector. Finally, a new project that we are particularly keen on is taking shape: the Home Italia showrooms, created in collaboration with the architects and
brands that work with us, and which will consolidate and make our role as General Contractor recognizable. A format that we would like to replicate in various countries over the next few years. With this issue we are therefore optimistically inaugurating the year 2022: a year that, we hope, will mark the end of the pandemic and the return of large-scale events. For this reason, for the Salone del Mobile in Milan, scheduled for April, we will organize the Fuorisalone in the headquarters of the Milan Order of Architects: the protagonists will be our brands, which will be brought together in an evocative installation. In the same space we will also organize lectures and happenings to which professionals will be invited: an opportunity to meet and make agreements for the future. So let’s start 2022 with enthusiasm: there are many projects under development that will represent the real turning point for Home Italia. Stay Tuned!

HI TECH FOR HOME
THE FIRST INDOOR VEGETABLE GARDEN DEDICATED TO LOVERS OF TASTE, TECHNOLOGY AND AESTHETICS, LA GRANGETTE IS THE EXCLUSIVE INDOOR VEGETABLE GARDEN THAT BRINGS AN INNOVATIVE HYDROPONIC FARMING EXPERIENCE WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE INTO THE HOME: A NEW AND INTERACTIVE WAY TO DISCOVER THE PLEASURE OF GROWING FRESH PRODUCTS DIRECTLY IN YOUR OWN KITCHEN
C
onceived and produced by French family business of the same name based in Avignon and designed by Italian Pininfarina, La Grangette combines innovative design with the latest technology to allow the simultaneous cultivation of 64 plants, choosing from 43 varieties of ‘salads’, ‘aromatic herbs’ and ‘healthy’. “La Grangette is inspired by my childhood family home and by the vegetable garden where my grandfather lovingly grew all kinds of vegetables in the countryside of the South of France. We wanted to propose the same kind of experience, adapting it to the contemporary urban lifestyle: people today have less time and space but want to consume fresh, healthy products. So we came up with the idea of an indoor vegetable garden which, thanks to hydroponics techniques and the support of the most advanced technology, offers genuine, nutrient-rich products, grown to perfection, to be eaten when they are perfectly ripe,” says Thibaut Pradier, creator of La Grangette. The extraordinary smart technology of La Grangette allows to grow plants for food use without wastes, recreating the optimal conditions for each of them to reach full maturity. La Grangette consumes 90% less water than in conventional agriculture, without herbicides or pesticides, and allows fewer CO2 emissions during the plant’s life cycle. “O u r c ol laborat ion with La Grangette has been absolutely except iona l, g iv i ng Pininfarina the opportunity to demonstrate its unique capabilities to help create and bring to market ground-breaking product and service experiences. It is an embodiment of our core beliefs and values: from approaching technology as permeating the very fabric of the products we design, bringing together the tangible and the intangible into one inseparable whole, to focusing not only on the beauty of an object but also on the delight of interacting with it, or designing and developing products in more sustainable ways and promoting more sustainable ways of living,”
34
HERE: Thibaut Pradier, creator of La Grangette.
says Xavier Blanc Baudriller, Head of Experience and Product Design at Pininfarina. The experience designed by Pininfarina is one that goes beyond the sheer beauty of the product, adding to it delightful interactions. Building on artificial intelligence and auto-growth monitoring, La Grangette gently and intuitively guides users throughout the various steps of growing plants, from indicating the most favourable seeding position for a healthy growth to informing when the perfect time for harvesting has come or helping them discover new plants, scents and flavours. This is done
through a mobile app, an intrinsic part of the La Grangette experience, designed to augment the sensorial experience of the product and of the plants growing inside it with content and functionality to help users plan and experience a conscious and healthy diet. The styling of La Grangette draws on delicate and clean lines to suit every home type and style. It is available in three colours (light warm, cold grey and dark warm), with solid wood finishes (oak, ash or pine) or wood and metal. It is possible to pre -order La Grangette on the official website, with delivery on summer 2022. Price starting from 24.000 euro. ( www.lagrangette.com). H

Contrasting with the concrete and wood walls, floors and shelves, the furniture c omplement s LeWit t ’s c olor scheme, creating a vibrant and bold visual environment. Glass shelves supported by concrete podiums occupy the central area of the store, conveying a sense of transparency, and a neon orange Loewe logo adds a Miami feel to the ensemble.Scattered throughout the space, Loewe’s podiums are filled with playful elements such as colorful fruit, pompoms, felts and ceramics, and are paired with vibrant wool carpets made in Spain and Gerrit Thomas Rietveld’s Stelt ma n a nd Ut recht chairs. EXHIBITION
IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN By Editorial Staff
A LANDSCAPE OF THINGS WITH ALESSANDRO MENDINI AND FRIENDS CURATED BY STEFANO CASCIANI, BASED ON AN IDEA OF ANTONIO COLOMBO
Mendini A., Proust Paradise armchair, 2019, ceramic miniature, decal decoration, limited ed., 28x20. x16.5 cm. Casciani Stefano, Conosfera, 1991-2001, two reversible ceramic vases, Gabi Faeh edition, h 52 cm. Ed. of 9. Ph. Mario Ermoli.
A
lessandro Mendini always made collaboration with others a central part of his work: artists, architects, designers, artisans, musicians, writers... From the editorial staff of the legendary magazine Casabella to his year of the “New Utopia” with Domus, from Studio Alchimia to Atelier Mendini, from products for Alessi to the Groningen Museum, there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of names with whom he worked on the idea that groups and associations, no matter how heterogeneous, can generate small and large aesthetic revolutions. ical diagrams), based on an idea of Antonio Colombo and curated by Stefano Casciani with the cooperation of Elisa and Fulvia Mendini, brings together works by some of the figures who accompanied Mendini in projects on many different scales. The result is the symbolic formation of a very new group, representing the variety and originality of individual attitudes and ideas, which Mendini was often able to discover and spread. In the exhibition and its catalogue, the works on view – paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, glass, furniture and objects, one-of-a-kind pieces or editions – converge to define an intellectual, cultural and physical landscape of authors that represent an important presence on the scene of art and design, in Italy and on an international level. This is thus a demonstration of the “Mendini Theorem”: the idea that collective work can trigger achievement, generating important new creations and having a long and happy life, when every project is open to other voices, as in a grand Gesamtkunstwerk of visions, forms and people. On view until 12 March 2022 The Authors: Vincent Beaurin, Massimo Caiazzo, Arduino Cantafora, Stefano Casciani, Carla Ceccariglia, Pierre Charpin, Riccardo Dalisi, Michele De Lucchi, Massimo Giacon, Anna Gili, Bruno Gregory, Alessandro Guerriero, Maria Christina Hamel, Jaime Hayon, Dorota Koziara, Alex Mocika, Occhio Magico, Mimmo Paladino, Franco Raggi, Karim Rashid, Studio Job, Oscar Tusquets. The show also includes new editions by Alessandro Mendini. (Gallery Antonio Colombo Contemporary Art, via Solferino 44 Milan. The exhibition will be open until March 12, 2022). H

VISIONARY
KASTELAZ HOUSE By Laura Ragazzola Photography by Gustav Willeit
IN NORTH ITALY, A CONTEMPORARY VILLA INSPIRED BY VINEYARD LANDSCAPE
S
outh Tirol (Italy): the wonderful wine area of Termeno, which gave its name to the famous Gewürztraminer, is where Kastelaz, a well-known local vinery, has its prestious ‘vigna’. And it’s here that Kastelaz owner asked Peter Pichler Architecture team to design a new villa, replacing an old structure on top of a hill within his property. The site was unique, providing a 360-degree view towards mountain valleys, vineyards and forests.
42
The geometry of the villa has been designed to best fit into this landscape. “We aimed at creating a flowing and harmonious transition between the house and the landscape and at the same time a volume which was barely noticeable from the close village” says Peter Pichler, founder of the homonymous studio, based in Milan. The house simple ribbon-like structure, which seems to emerge from the scenery around, shapes an internal courtyard that shelters
from the strong wind coming from Garda Lake: it connects all the spaces, blending seamlessly the house with nature. The external side is made of chalkstone, mirroring the texture and colour of the retaining walls from the surrounding vineyards. The structure is divided into three ‘wings’, with wide glass facades that offer great light and openings to outdoors. Internally, the use of local materials creates a warm yet minimalistic atmosphere. H
LEFT: The ribbon-like structure creates an internal and wellprotected courtyard. HERE: The house wide glass facades are designed to frame the surroundings and to let the landscape enter the indoor spaces while maintaining internal privacy. ART
THE NEW PROJECT OF SANLORENZO ARTS
ON DISPLAY IN THE SANLORENZO LOUNGE IN ART BASEL COLLECTORS LOUNGE IS A COMMISSIONED WORK BY AMERICAN ARTIST MCARTHUR BINION
S
anlorenzo reaffirms its presence at Art Basel Miami Beach 2021, the most significant modern and contemporary art fair on the international scene. A collaboration began in 2018 with the signing of the global partnership agreement for the annual appointments in Hong, Basel and Miami Beach, born from the desire to bring new creative languages on board and seek an active bond with the art world. In 2021 the company reinforces its path aimed to support creativity and contemporary art by launching Sanlorenzo Arts, wich on the occasion of Art Basel Miami Beach 2021 presents a new project with the American artist McArthur Binion. Presented for the first time during Art Basel in Basel 2021, Sanlorenzo Arts is a platform dedicated to navigating the complexity of the present through creativity, also in its most innovative sides. It is an active and interactive channel for projects, related to the world of art and design, that addresses the most topical issues in the most original and resourceful ways, thanks to the sensitivity of artists, designers, thinkers and creatives. Sanlorenzo Arts has embarked on a journey of discovery and surprise, of continuous encounters, encouraging the construction of meaning and value, ready to set sail for new latitudes. As part of this innovative journey, Sanlorenzo Arts has invited Flash Art, the iconic international contemporary art magazine, and its global network of curators, artists and thinkers, to conduct a dialogue between the art world and the Sanlorenzo brand. For Sanlorenzo, Binion conceived the site-specific work “Cobalto”,
presented inside the Sanlorenzo Lounge, which will be part of his “DNA” series, a body of work he began working on in 2013. Binion’s work combines collage, drawing and painting to create autobiographical abstractions. Using the scale of his own body, he builds compositions from vivid, geometric patterns, chained by a grid. Up close, the painting reveals a substrate of closely juxtaposed and rhythmically arranged copies of personal documents: pages from the artist’s address book, his birth certificate and photos of his childhood home in Mississippi. McArthur Binion’s “DNA” series of paintings is an index of time, work and identity that repurposes the minimalist grid to investigate a deeply personal narrative. Binion’s essential combination of colour and form compresses a wide range of influences-personal history, relationships, writings and memories-all absorbed during a lifetime dedicated to the making. Offering an in-depth formal analysis and contextualising his trajectory within the interdisciplinary cultural scenes of New York and Chicago, McArthur Binion’s “DNA” provides insight into the rigorous and experimental spirit that has defined the artist’s wider practice and illuminates his place within a critical history of abstraction in the 20th and 21st centuries. For this specific work, the choice of Italian ink, which retains its original name Cobalt, is the connection between the artist’s practice and the deeper, unknown marine world of Sanlorenzo. H

3DAYSOFDESIGN IN COPENHAGEN, DENMARK’S ANNUAL DESIGN EVENT, PRESENTS A SELECTION OF WORKS FROM A VARIETY OF CREATIVE TALENTS: DESIGNERS, CRAFTSMEN, ARCHITECTS AND MANUFACTURERS

Daysofdesign, under the able direction of Signe Byrdal Terenziani, presents each year the latest from the Scandinavian world. A three-day event in which showrooms, creative studios, new spaces and manufacturers tell their stories with passion in beautiful Copenhagen. But that’s not all. The design week in the Danish capital is a real journey to discover the craftsmanship, ideals and tradition of this country. The appointments take place within the city (and its suburbs) in historic buildings or new spaces opened for the occasion: you have the opportunity to discover new corners of Copenhagen. Perhaps the key to the success of these three days of design is precisely this: the opportunity to go beyond the product, meeting the protagonists directly, to really understand in depth what lies behind each individual creation. The graphic identity of the last edition was created by Ilse Crawford and we wait for the appointment in May 2022 to

find out who will be the next designer in charge of creating the image of the event. During the design week we suggest a stop at Designmuseum Danmark, at the very interesting DAC and at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, one of the most important international museums dedicated to modern and contemporary art. To move during the Scandinavian design week is recommended the bicycle: means of transport for excellence in the capital that offers the possibility to appreciate every single stage. There will also be a bus and boat service, organized by 3Daysofdesign, to reach all the exhibitors participating in the event: but you must buy tickets in advance on the website 3daysofdesign.dk (the next event will take p l a c e f r o m 8 t h to 10 t h J u n e 2 0 2 2 ) . The Danish design together with the hospitality and the wonderful city of Copenhagen, will welcome you in an unforgettable embrace that will capture you. H Pulpo

SCOUTING
VIPP PENCIL FACTORY By Laura Ragazzola Photography by Matteo Piazza
IN COPENHAGEN, A 100-YEAR-OLD PENCIL FACTORY HAS TRANSFORMED INTO A SOCIAL DINING ROOM DEDICATED TO NEW FOOD EXPERIENCES
48
FROM HERE CLOCKWISE: The former pencil factory has been decorated as a cozy home, using a bright and elegant material palette. Paintings and ceramics are mixed with Vipp’s furniture collection; the centrally placed V2 kitchen by Vipp is the focal point of the entire room; in the living room the Fazioli grand piano enables music perfomances; from the 26-person long-table, guests can watch the chefs cooking; the entrance to the VIPP Factory Pencil.
“I
t’s not a restaurant. But we do invite spectacular chefs to cook up intimate dinners. Nor is it a theatre. But we do invite talented artists to play. Nor is it a showroom. But we have invited renowned designers to sharpen up the venue with a Vipp kitchen and furniture. And now, we invite you to book a seat at our long table”. This is how Kasper Egelund, CEO and 3rd generation owner of VIPP - historic Danish kitchens brand - introduces us to the ‘VIPP Supper Club’, a new idea of restaurant, just opened in Copenhagen (Denmark), where food, design, architecture, music and art are surprisingly mixed. The new space occupies a former pencil fac-
tory, located in the Islands Brygg discritct, which has been trasformed by the interior designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard into an elegant 400 meters squares loft, including different areas: the kitchen (furnished by new Vipp V2 model), the lunchroom with a 26-person long-table (all the guests have dinner together) and the sitting room (here, a Fazioli grand piano stands out). The focal point is the island-kitchen where famous chefs from all over the world take turns cooking and transform the food preparation into a performance. Musical talents are also invited to take the stage along with the grand piano, while rotating exhibitions of design and art trasform the space in a unique art gallery. H

T
he project vision included creating a collection of lodge-like communal spaces surrounded by naturally weathered and local materials providing an abundance of access to natural light, and minimizing visual separation from the outdoors. This 4,500-square-foot, all-weather mountain retreat is about enhancing and recharging social relations and maximizing connections to the native environment. Site constraints were central to the design response and ultimately informing the spatial concept to triangulate the structure working with the existing sloping terrain. It turned the strict height limitation and slope constraints of the site into an advantage by anchoring the structure into the landforms. The structure frames powerful views through two principal façades, maximizing the visual connection to the landscape at every angle. Strategic decisions in the frame and form allowed for efficiencies and functional benefits, including a triangular structural steel frame with car decking to minimize costs through prefabrication, and a roof slope to move water and snow downslope. Finishes and interior relationships (featuring a palette with wood, stone, and weathering steel) were carefully crafted to draw the scenic landscape inward and extending the outdoor deck living experience. A central spiraling split-level arrangement allows for the living room, fireplace, bar and lounge to feel like intimate spaces with a communal energy. Terracing theater seating maximizes space within the stairwell working with the topography. Compact and efficient private sleeping wings open to expansive outdoor views at the lower level. Exterior spaces open interior activity to the outdoors including a triangular spa with an elevated deck and an expansive outdoor terrace right off of the kitchen. The Owl Creek residence provides a platform to gather in a shared living environment connected to their surroundings with purpose, deepening family connections. H

In line with the taste and the current market demands the new Avalon Plus, luxury evolution of the Avalon model, now enriched with metal base in black nickel finish covered in leather. The sofa was designed by the project office in collaboration with Enrico Cesana, talented designer and long-time collaborator of Marac. The backrest made of feathers only envelops the body and, together with the depth of the seat and the height of the cushion that becomes a “supporting” structure, makes the model extremely comfortable. With completely removable covers in the fabric version, Avalon Plus can also be made in soft leather. Perfect in combination with Avalon Plus are the Boulevard coffee tables, designed by Enrico Cesana in collaboration with Yonoh Studio of Valencia. The timeless minimal lines are made special by the innovative tops, made of MDF covered with marble granules and stones treated like a resin.

uca De Felice, multifaceted designer, craftsman and artist who for over twenty years has been creating refined furniture and interiors around the world with the excellence of the finest Italian artisans, here he was inspired by Nature and emphasized the interaction between light and matter. Light is the element that enhances the natural materials and highlights care and details of the entire process. The presence of natural materials in a place dedicated to well-being is crucial, even the structural parts are made of wood. The building is camouflaged in the forest, the exterior walls and floors are made of larch wood. Impressive portals finished in decorated cement mortar mark the entrance- the threshold is a gigantic wooden portal carved by hand 6 meters high - and the exit continues outside with a wooden walkway leading to the outdoor sauna. In the 670 square meters of the interior space, a long corridor with walls covered in mortar with natural resins and gold, connects the two entrances. From the corridor opens the living room and the dining room; here the large convivial table custom-made, obtained from a single plank of 5 meters of olive larch, is assembled in Italy and finished on site. All the furnishings, coatings and even porcelain, are designed by Luca De Felice - excluding the armchairs by Ceccotti. Continuing along the corridor, we find the rooms dedicated to well-being, with the walls also in mortar decorated with textures inspired by nature and projections of reflections that evoke the flow of water, like that of the river beside the building. LUCA DE FELICE
Luca De Felice is founder and the artistic director of a new company, sited in Milan, called Simposio Design Srl. His competence in the field of luxury interior design is focused on a multidisciplinary education. When he was very young he moved his first steps in contemporary art world, collaborating with the most important names of international contemporary art. Then, he attends some training programs in architecture graphic design, and works on several important projects led by internationally renowned architects, such as Paolo Desideri (Tiburtina Station Project). In the meantime, he keeps on studying and developing experience within the world of contemporary art. This until 2002 when he obtained a scholarship to attend Howard Gilman Foundation of New York. This experience lasted two years. After that, he came back to Italy, and focused all his knowledge on another kind of art, the craftmanship, becoming an expert of any sort of material. Therefore, he became site manager and art director of an international interior design company: from 2001 till 2007 he worked all over the world for some of the most important projects of Design2000 International, living in Costa Azzurra, for the construction of 3 amazing houses on the cost, in Doha, for the Alfardhan Tower and other private properties, and realizing other projects in Angola, Vienna, London and Paris. In 2007 he started leading the Decoration department of Exclusiva Design. In this company he was also involved into design processes, carrying forward important projects in Siberia, Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Paris, Saint Moritz and Montecarlo. At this time, he also worked on some important projects in China, in Bejiin and Shanghai and in 2013 he participated as a foreign guest at the Design week in Guangzhou. From 2017, as artistic director of Manodopera, in just 3 years he has realized a Spa in Russia, a Michelin star restaurant nearby Rome, a private villa of 2000 sqm in Rome, a project for a private apartment of 3000 sqm in Saint Petersburg and one villa in Tenerife. Once landed in Milan with Simposio Design, he starts writing a new page of his history.

T
he Amer 120 was born from the idea of the Permare shipyard to create a yacht that could maximize the livable volumes on board without renouncing to a sporty style that distinguishes the shipyard, inserting in the design an innovative and revolutionary project and construction solution based on the concept of de-glazing, that is to replace the two lateral sides, usually made of fiberglass, with recyclable materials (glass and metal) at the end of their life. It was therefore decided with the team of the shipyard to create a total wide body superstructure, which could contain the largest possible interior space and at the same time guarantee the same for life on the outside. The Flagship Amer 120 is characterized by the full-width superstructure, which allows to have all the spaces of the main deck (saloon, owner’s cabin, kitchen, etc.) of particularly large dimensions. Amer 120 I also characterized by propulsion with 4 Volvo IPS engines, able to be adapted for future SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) installation to sail in ECA (Emission Control Area) that will be increased more and more to respect the sea environment. From the beginning Permare builder worked to improve the environmental footprint in building phases using a new innovative tool for create mouldings. Volvo Penta Ips propulsion allows navigation with exceptional comfort, quiet and vibration-free and easy manoeuvrability with the joystick that greatly simplifies mooring manoeuvring from 4 different points of the ship. Another feature a key point for the shipyard is the consumptions reduced to a minimum. The ship is standard equipped with a Seakeeper gyroscopic stabilizer that reduces the roll of the boat at anchor and the Humphree fins stabilizers that reduce it during navigation. The perfect combination of these two stabilizers increases the comfort already exiting to an excellent level by the Volvo propulsion and electronic anchor tool. The large windows of both the main deck and the cabins of the lower deck will allow a greater presence of
natural light for more a fantastic blue waters view experience. A huge amount of work has been done, not only for the ten guests in their 5 cabins but also in the crew area. Once the crew is comfortable , so will the guests! Rina classified and in addition, other RINA certifications will be taken and in particular: “Green”, which assesses environmental performance; “ Comfort”, which assesses the noise and vibration on board; and a new technical certification , which assesses the ship’s impact on the underwater environment. For the interiors, The owner of the new Amer 120 asked for a space with a clean sign, with
clear tones, easy to live in and to move through, available to welcome onboard friends (on board there is a large kitchen and in the saloon a bar area at the entrance and a large wine cellar that fills the entire wall towards the bow), more similar to a vacation home where you can relax than to a luxurious means of transport. The yacht is not minimalist but rather maximalist: in fact, the interior of the Amer 120 is a succession of design episodes that are revealed as soon as you get on board and you can appreciate the richness, made of light, research of colors and materials, details, all elements that are linked together

to achieve a priority objective. In fact, the interior design is inspired and nourished by the “superior design of Nature” with which it is compared without overlapping but in an organic manner: no clear-dark, no strong colors, no special effects but colors, materials and shapes that harmonize with the sea. This harmony has been made possible also thanks to the immense glass surfaces that envelop all the areas of the yacht and that want to

cancel the “barriers” with the outside. Bringing the external light inside the yacht has been dilated and multiplied with the refined and accurate use of mirrors and stainless steel positioned between the large windows. The design of the colors and materials ranges from the white of the horizon in the morning to the turquoise of the sea, from the color of the sand to the color of the logs washed ashore by the swells. Therefore, the walls

and furniture are white with ribs that recall the ripple of the sea and are also low to leave free perspectives to the outside. Even the color of the sofas is white, they have a width that invites you to relax and the seat recalls being on the seashore on a deckchair. In the bathrooms a natural Italian stone has been used that harmonizes with all the other colors and materials and not by chance called “ Moon Cream”. The essence of the oak used in all the interiors is sand-colored like the color of the teak on the floor. This teak has a history as distant as ancient: it comes from the demolition of ancient Indonesian villages built with this material and recently recovered and processed. This material maintains its ancient charm and at the same time its “used taste”, pleasant to the touch of bare feet and to the sense of smell. In fact, respect for nature in general and in particular the preservation of teak forests were one of the guiding elements of the project. H

ts design is inspired by the separate but connected forms of a dogtrot barn. The main volume of the 3,632-square-foot house is oriented along an east-west axis, which allows the living spaces to take full advantage of southern light, while its asymmetrically gabled roof orients the interiors toward the primary views. The garage, comprising the secondary volume, is linked to the main volume by a heroic porch, which serves to unify the masses, signal entry, and provide a sense of welcome and shelter. In the open breezeway between the forms, an aperture in the roof lightens its mass and creates a focal point, inviting dynamic play of light. Although the house comprises one gabled form, protected outdoor spaces are carved out of the main volume and extended on either end to create sheltered outdoor living spaces. Perforated steel siding adds texture and provides the covered porches with privacy and

The interior maintains this simple palette with steel, glass, and concrete. Larch is used on the floors, walls, windows frames, and ceilings. Warm, light, and rustic in character, the wood wraps up the walls to the ceiling and continues outside, particularly in the home’s living space, which is anchored by a cast-in-place concrete fireplace. THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THE NIGHT Beds and complements transform everynight space into rooms of beauty Cantori’s extraordinary collection for the night-time area has been developed, thanks to our designers, into a heterogeneous ensemble of contemporary beds, chest of drawers, bedside tables, armchairs and a variety of other complements. The extraordinary quality of our proposals, the combination of finishes and selected materials — like metal, part of a history of Cantori firm — creates, in the night area, a special, charming atmosphere that awaits to be discovered.
Top: Urbino canopy bed, with upholstered headboard. Bottom: The Urbino canopy bed, the true protagonist of a night space, characterized by its distinctive cold-tapered metal structure. The Urbino bed is available in various sizes. Designed by the Castello Lagravinese Studio, like the City chest of drawers, bedside tables, and dressing table, and the Sofia lighting series. Camilla armchair by Daniel Rode. Portofino pouff.
Rounded lines, natural materials, a neutral palette, and the expertise of our craftmanship: these are the characteristics of Cantori’s products. Cantori’s history, dating back to 1976, has its roots in the tradition of our territory, and the wisdom of our craftmanship. Today more than ever our care for details, meticulous craftmanship, and the excellence made possible by Cantori’s four-decade experience is merged with a contemporary interpretation of the materials. Forms and lines highlight the intense and surprising merging between project and context. The night area is the protagonist and the soul of the house, symbol of human relationships. The iconic Urbino beds propose an unprecedented creative vision, and weave a story of materials and rigorous design.

reating a shelter from the challenging climate conditions along the coast as well as an observatory for appreciating the beauty of both land and sea: this was the concept that Norwegian architect Todd Saunders had in mind when he designed Villa Austevoll, a fascinating retreat for a couple with children on the island of Selbjørn, which is part of the archipelago to the south of Bergen. As agreed with the clients, the building had to be unusual, modern and sculptural, while having the lightest possible impact upon the natural setting and surroundings. Saunders decided to lift the house

above the landscape, to take advantage of the hillside site and the views that it offered in all directions. He developed the idea of a cross-shaped building, coated of white timber and glass, sitting on top of a triangular plinth, made of concrete, which recesses into the hillside. Slim steel pillars complement the structural, supportive function of the plinth, which also serves as the entrance to the house. From the entrance hall, a sculptural, spiral staircase leads to the upper level, emerging at the central point of the ‘cross’, in an open and welcoming living space running from north to south. the sitting room, including a library wall, while the other hosts the dining area and a fitted galley kitchen. Both of these spaces spill out onto terraces, sheltered by the overhang of the roof. The master bedroom suite in the third spoke of the cross and the two bedrooms in the fourth, similarly, connect with terraces facing east and west, so that every point of the cross connects with a key vista. Overall, villa Austevoll combines an impressive structure, highly integrated with the landscape, with the cabin-like simplicity of the interiors and relatively low-maintenance materials, taking into account the coastal weather conditions. A formula which has proved successful, as the family has been spending more and more time at their 21st Century cabin through all four seasons. H

THE EVERGREEN COLLECTION: AN INSPIRATION TO NATURE Evergreen is a collection dedicated to the beauty of nature and the colors of the earth. A concept that embraces the main areas of the house, from the living room to the dining room, from the home office to the bedroom, with highly refined and handcrafted products, proposed with high quality materials such as Canaletto Walnut, Black lacquered Ash wood and the warm nuances of the leather or fabric upholstery. It is no coincidence that the names of the individual products refer to nature and flowers, such as Blossom, Tulip, Ivy, Lotus, Gaia or Holly, and others are inspired by the forces of nature, such as Cliff, Geo or Wave. Because according to Aristotle, “In all things of nature there is something wonderful.”

ot far from Moscow, in the forest area within the golf club of Pirogovo, you can find a contemporary dacha which has been completely designed and built in Italy, combining high innovation with Russian traditions. “Building a house that can stand up to Russian weather was a challenge”, says Umberto Zanetti, the Milan based architect who signed the project. “Temperatures range from 30 degrees in the summer to -40 in the winter. The other challenge was to insert the house into the beautiful natural setting with minimal disruption”. With over three decades of experience in the international scene, Zanetti has a wide experience of projects in Russia. For the new dacha, he chose wood as the primary material and designed an L-shaped plan to best position the house amid the existing trees. To provide more insulation and a 360° view of the nature outside, the residential spaces has been elevated on metal piloties with different diameters, asymmetrical positions and a particular zinc texture, so that they could blend with the birch trees all around. glass area with controlled microclimate which recalls the typical verandas that in Russian dachas act as a buffer between indoors and outdoors. The facades are oriented to maximize daylight exposure and natural ventilation. Innovative solutions, including a geothermal system with a highly efficient heat pump, have been implemented to increase sustainability and comfort. Even more innovative has been the construction process. “We pre-assembled the dacha in Italy and made the final assembling in Russia” reminds Zanetti. “It took 15 trailers to haul all the pieces. A journey of 3000 km, but it was worth it. Once in Pirogovo, the worksite lasted only few weeks.” Which proves that industrialized processes, while not setting limits to creative design, can allow for more control on quality, time and costs. H

Manhattan Wine Cellar The preview of our 2022 collection includes new transversal pieces that are conceived to enter both residential and hospitality projects. Designed by Alessandro Andreucci architect, the Manhattan wine cellar combines the purity of forms and the elegance of raw materials with advanced climate control technologies. To keep its properties unaltered, wine requires a fresh and humid microclimate. Our cellar is finished in matte Macassar ebony and black oak veneer and combines two distinct storage elements, lit with LED lighting. The right side of the cellar is equipped with several sliding trays, designed to display and store 24 bottles of wine, 15 bottles of champagne and 12 magnum bottles. Temperature is adjustable since each compartment is equipped with a separate refrigeration system and humidity rate is kept between 60 and 70%.

The left side of the cellar is not refrigerated and offers ample storage space for all kind of glasses. It is also equipped with removable trays and drawers to keep all necessary tools for preparing and serving drinks. The wine cellar can also be fitted with a CE certified blast chiller, available upon request. Manhattan essential lines are elevated by a handle with horn gems nestled in a burnished brass frame. Horn is processed by expert artisans following ancient techniques that are centuries old and keep unaltered the properties of raw material. The dialogue between the natural grains of horn and Macassar ebony veneer give life to elegant color combinations that create an exclusive atmosphere. Drawer in Macassar ebony veneer

I
wanted to create a family friendly home that was inviting, exotic, beautiful and most importantly comfortable. I love modern architecture and design, but nothing is more important to me than utilizing each space to its best ability and making each room livable, functional, comfortable and useable for all ages. The couches have custom depth so everyone can lounge and no one will fight for “the corner”, the coffee tables don’t have sharp edges in case of children or pets it also softens the space, the rugs are plush and soft on the feet made out of silk and bamboo, bright colours throughout the house to balance the modern elements surrounding it like the concrete and steel sliding doors and creating a happy space, mood lighting throughout the house to create ambience, indoor and outdoor living at its finest! You can make a simple coffee in the kitchen
and open the sliding door leading to one of the courtyards and have the luxury to enjoy it outside while listening the birds singing and watching the double coy fishpond in front of you playing and swimming in the water. The same applies for the living room with oversized furniture to cater to a happy filled home and the ability to open all of the front of the house with its slicing doors and enjoy boat watching from you r liv ing room or covered terrace because you have that indoor and outdoor option depending on your mood or weather. Each room serves a purpose and the upper terrace as an example is perfect place watch the sunset while lounging and enjoying company with the option to open or close the Uhlmaan umbrellas as an example that withstands winds of 102km an hour. The furnishings are at the top of their quality and materials and with brands

such as Kettal the outmost luxurious outdoor company and my favourite, Henge, Holly Hunt, Minotti. Handmade on paper with charcoal by Roberto Longo is a powerful piece located in the front door and some oil on canvas in a very large scale by Michael Smith and other artists throughout the house. I think this house is the best expression of subtropical modernism architecture. The best quality and execution for any modern home in Miami I have seen and I have seen many. The whole house is made out of Roman Travertine flooring and Belgian Oak wallpaneling in every
wall. There is no dry wall anywhere in this house. The furniture is all top of the line and at latest models showcasing elegance yet comfort. It is the perfect getaway surrounded by nature and luxury in every detail you look at. The infinity pool is made out of a single piece of acrylic glass that is 76ft long by 3 feet. It is really impactful when standing there. A contemporary house build in a neighbourhood that is surrounded by more traditional and Mediterranean architecture. The house really stands out and has the “wow factor”. (from the architects’s project description). H

“S
ince 2006, when we went to live in a houseboat that we had built by ourselves, a lot of people were coming up and ask if we would rent it and how is it like to live in a boat. That’s how the idea for Kaj Hotel came through”. Who’s talking is Toke Larsen, naval engineer and owner-designer of this lovely micro-hotel on the water, anchored in the port of Copenhagen, just next to Toke’s, the houseboat where he resides with his family. Toke has been the first to figure out a new kind of hospitality which he calls ‘only-one-room-hotel’: a small
place dedicated to a single client, with superior solutions and services in all the details. “We took all the best from our big boat and put it into a smaller house as a luxury package”, he explains. For the structure, Toke was inspired by Scandinavian maritime buildings: the small fishing houses in Sweden’s Archipelago, combined with the boathouses in Silkeborg Denmark (lake boathouses). But the most impressive aspect is that Toke has only used recycled materials. “We love the idea of giving things a second life and a new value” he explains. “Moreover, we feel

more at home when we have around some history rather than new impersonal surroundings. However, recycled materials call for a more flexible approach to construction and maintenance: the discovery of an old door or window can change your design and use”. Indeed, the hotel is originated by several discoveries: the facade comes from recycled patio boards; windows were part of a former Danish defence command; the iron foundation is made of old railroad poles; the stairs and the gangway are recycled from an actual ship. The result is really fascinating. And what is great of Kaj Hotel is that you can have a ‘room all to yourself’ on the water, in the middle of the city: “You can swim in the morning, take the boat (under the hotel there is the boat storage) for a tour in the harbour, fish for cod in spring time just from your own terrace”, says Toke. “Your stay will always be different: it can vary depending on wind and weather conditions, as well as on the time of the day. Every moment has its charm, and you will experience it by yourself”. H

DFN: LUXURY OUTDOOR PROJECTS REFINED IN EVERY DETAIL. DFN designs, manufactures and distributes luxury outdoor furnishing collections and outdoor structures. No longer just a trend: outdoor furniture, from seating to the most sophisticated accessories, has become an established status symbol. The credit for this leap in quality must be shared between the extensive research carried out over the last decade into materials and finishes and the decisive aesthetic upgrade which has generated collections able to show off great design potential. Established in 2013 by experienced entrepreneurs in the furnishing and construction sector, DFN is among the companies which have best interpreted this major change. The Italian company did in fact immediately focus on the evolution Twilight “Sublime Collection - Dolcefarniente Outdoor”
Aldebaran swing chair “Samuele Mazza Outdoor Collection”
taking place in the world of outdoor furniture and developed its own global philosophy which has made it a benchmark in the luxury segment. DFN takes an all-round view of the outdoor world, not limiting itself to offering furniture or seating, but creating its own universe which includes conservatories, other outdoor structures and even kitchens. That of DFN is a world of its own, expressed through different brands (Samuele Mazza, Dolcefarniente, La casa dei Limoni,) but with the common denominator in the accuracy and craftsmanship of details, the result of the leadership acquired in the production of woven materials combined with the necessary ability to present solutions perfectly resistant to all weather conditions.
Canopo “Samuele Mazza Outdoor Collection”
Brunelleschi Bioclimatic Pergola “La Casa dei Limoni”
Let’s talk about kitchens, for years the forbidden dream of those who wanted an outdoor life with all the comforts of the interior, which DFN proposes with projects that can be customised both in size and in details, favouring the experience of outdoor cooking. We are talking about winter gardens and other outdoor structures, made to measure in contemporary materials but with shapes that can go from minimalism to the evocation of the wonders of turn-of-century gardens. The vision of outdoor living proposed by DFN is not limited to single products, but conveys an idea of universal relaxation, based on the inalienable concepts of beauty and comfort. This idea is perfectly expressed by new products such as the sophisticated Canopo and the iconic Aldebaran swing chair by Samuele Mazza Outdoor Collection, the classic living set Twilight (Sublime collection by Dolcefarniente Outdoor) and the fantastic Brunelleschi Bioclimatic Pergola (La Casa dei Limoni).

he place is a forested hill close to the small village of Harads, located about eighty kilometers up along the Lule River in the far north of Sweden. Its greatest asset is the vast and magnificent forests, where the new Tree hotel was started as a response to the growing interest in the wild nature and ecotourism. It establishes a last outpost, or a first base station, on the border between contemporary cultured society and an untouched natural environment. The starting point of the Mirrorcube is the relationship between man and nature. Its character, both camouflaged contextual and abstract deviant, is inspired by an observation of how we approach nature both as something enticing but also challenging. A paradox of the search for an original and authentic experience, combined with the high-tech materials and advanced equipment we believe we need to get really close to nature. The Mirrorcube is a simple hut in the trees, a lightweight aluminum structure mounted directly on the tree trunk of a tall pine. The entire volume, a 4x4x4 meter cube, is clad in highly reflective glass, the outside of which reflects the surroundings and the sky, creating a camouflaged place among the treetops. The interior is made of plywood and freely positioned windows open up to a 360 degrees view of the surroundings. The cabin offers a living for two people; a king size bed, a small kitchenette and bathroom, as well as a living room and a roof terrace. Access is via a rope ladder or a rope bridge attached to the adjacent trees. The project is realized entirely with local resources and craftsmanship from around Harads. The Treehotel is run by Brittas Pensionat, which also manages the common service facilities that holds complementary functions; bath, sauna, and a planned chapel. A
s its customers often wanted to define it, ORIGIN is an exceptional cabin, a unique and tailor-made project. A hundredyear-old oak, one of the most beautiful and tall of the domain of the Château de Raray was the starting point for the whole reflection: how to sublimate the tree? Creating around it a tailoring wooden-dress. The architectural challenge for Atrelie Lavit was to create a functional and comfortable hotel room, being faithful to the first inspiration of the project: a bird-nest. The design of the cabin, coupled with the construction techniques, has led to a rationalization of the assembly logic of the branches collected by the birds to create their impregnable shelters. Meeting point between poetry and carpentry mastery, Origin tree house discreetly stands out among the centenarian oaks of the Château de Raray forest, as if it had always been part of the scenery. Majestic and elegant, it integrates and completes a landscape already impressive, sublimating it by offering a shelter. The access is a sequence: passing first from a platform suspended on another tall oak thirty meters away, which includes a heated spa and a chilling area. Then a wooden walkway, ten meters from the ground, leads you straight into the heart of the nest. A wooden ladder invites to continue the ascent in close contact with the tree, to find with wonder a large 360 ° panoramic roof-terrace. A belvedere on the oak forest of the domain, as surprising as unexpected because it’s hidden by the exterior wooden cladding. The octagonal plan organizes the space around the oak trunk, incorporating it into the inhabited volume as the protagonist of the space that is the entrance to the tree house. Once in the patio a feeling of protection reings as in a nest, with an easy access to the living area thanks to two large sliding glass doors. A cosy, bright and intimate atmosphere fills the space thanks to the large windows. The inner lining of the wall is made out of poplar, a light and clear wood essence with a subtile yet present scent. The smooth, flat interior walls are matched to the custom-made furniture surfaces, worked with fine horizontal slats, in a simple game of geometric volumes. Around the patio the living spaces develop in succession; from the entrance to the living area and the sleeping area, till a narrow corridor with three sliding doors that give access respectively to a dressing room, a well equipped bathroom and a technical closet. Each one of the living spaces faces the large windows overlooking the forest, offering a mid-air view on the foliage of the centennian oaks of the domain (from the architects’s project description). www.chateauderaray.fr H
