Come Away With Me

Choose a destination wedding and be prepared for the time of your life! Words: Siobhan Davey At first, a destination wedding may seem out of the question. But if you find yourself overwhelmed as you draft your guest list, penciling in name after name of great aunts, tying the knot overseas surrounded by your loved ones might not seem like such a crazy idea. (And believe us, it’s a gorgeous path to go down.) Years ago, a wedding away may have been considered a selfish thing to do, but now, its much to the contrary. What better gift could you give your nearest and dearest than a miniholiday and a weekend long party? A friend of mine recently planned an Italian wedding with her closest family and friends. Upon their return, her mother could not stop raving about how fabulous a destination wedding was! Exploring a foreign country with her family, embracing the culture, and gazing upon all the scenery in the presence of such a wonderful love without a care in the world… it was, she believed, something everyone had to experience.

5 BENEFITS OF A DESTINATION WEDDING 1. N o unwanted guests. You won't be expected to invite acquaintances or distant relatives if your wedding isn't local. Keep it as intimate as you desire without causing offence.

2. G ive your guests a mini-holiday. A holiday can be hard to start planning so give your guests an excuse to book! Not only will they get to share your special day with you, they can have a few days either side to explore on their own.

3. T ime. Instead of cramming in conversations with all your guests over a four hour time slot, spend the days leading up to the wedding (and the day after!) catching up and thanking your guests for coming.

Planning is key. To ensure a stress-free lead up, lock down your date and venue ASAP and let your guests know. Just as you do, your guests will need to organise time off work, flights and accommodation.

4. A hell of a party. What's better

A destination wedding allows you to have even more time with your family and friends. You'll have the opportunity to spend the days leading up to the big day exploring the city, beach or countryside of your choosing. Unlike a wedding at home, you can use these days to mingle with your guests and let them know how grateful you are that they made it.

5. I t's so much fun! You get to

than having your closest family and friends with you, sharing the celebration? Everyone will be on holiday and ready to let their hair down with you. explore the culture and traditions of a place you love with your favourite people.

STARRY-EYED It's been a banner year for destination weddings. Glean some inspo from our fave celeb weddings...

Amal & George, Venice (Italy) With guests arriving from near and far, and the bride wearing a gorgeous Oscar de la Renta gown, there was no way the world wouldn't fall in love with this wedding. And, in a typically Venetian entrance, the couple arrived at the wedding locale via taxi boat. Favoloso!

Angelina & Brad, Correns (France) It was the news we were all waiting for when Ange and Brad escaped to their gorgeous French estate to say “I do”. The couple's six children played important roles on the big day and Ange’s gown was embroidered with their drawings.

Kim & Kanye, Florence (Italy) Following their massive pre-wedding celebrations in Paris, Kim and Kanye exchanged vows at Forte di Belvedere surrounded by a few hundred loved ones. Kanye also hired chanteuse Lana Del Rey to sing a few of her hits at the reception.

Amber & Johnny, Bahamas Johnny Depp wed bride Amber Heard on his own island in the Bahamas, opting for an intimate wedding on the beach. The celebration lasted a full weekend, and guests made plenty of use of the whole island for a relaxing, fun-filled getaway.

Behati & Adam, Los Cabos (Mexico) Starting their informal destination wedding with a beachfront party, the Maroon 5 frontman and Victoria's Secret model tied the knot at Los Cabos' Flora Farms.

Guest Getaway You’ve set the date, fixed the location, and planned the wedding of your dreams, guests included. Now, it’s time to sort out all the little details to get them to the chapel with you, happy faces abundant. Words: Natasha Pavez The Lead Up If you plan on having guests involved, do everyone a favour and plan well in advance. You'll be able to secure the venue of your dreams and celebrate with all those you adore. A save the date card is a must-do; ideally, you should send this out about six months before the wedding. Include information about your chosen destination – that way, you can really whet your guests' appetite for a spot of travel! Keep in mind that while the wedding is no doubt going to be expensive for the pair of you, your guests can seriously incur some hits to the back pocket with a destination wedding. Be considerate about your location, your venue, and accommodation options. Discuss whether your venue has any group accommodation discounts, or scour the internet to check out what options, from hostel to hotel, are available nearby for an overnight stay. Getting there and back needs to be simple and cost-effective, so do your research beforehand to see what flights your guests can catch. Tourist-heavy locales make the most of holiday seasons, so consider planning your destination wedding in an off-peak time for further cost cutting. And while we all love a pressie or two,

why not consider your guests' presence your wedding present, and forgo the usual gift? A memory lasts far longer than any toaster.

The Arrival You've arrived, hooray! After a long flight, you're probably a mite weary – and your guests will certainly be craving a spot of R&R. Organise a shuttle bus (or, if you like a bit of luxury, a private car) to pick your guests up from the airport and take them to their accommodation. You can also have transport sorted for the big day, to ensure your guests all get there easily if they're staying in a different location. Make sure you welcome the travellers warmly – we love the idea of a little welcome package waiting for your loved ones! (Think of it like a bomboniere.) Fill it with information about the location, contact details, fun activities to do outside of the wedding festivities, and any other dates and times they may need to remember. If you've got group accommodation booked, perhaps ask the venue if they can organise some tasty treats for your guests – think Champagne, a fruit platter or some decadent sweets on arrival.

Once all your guests have arrived, perhaps organise a sweet night out to catch up (nothing too over the top, of course, you'll all be exhausted!). You can also plan a few activities to allow your guests to see the best your location has to offer.

Wedding Bells The big day has come, and you'll be busy tying the knot, lucky you! Make sure your guests are looked after and enjoying themselves. Don't worry, your destination wedding planner will have all that well in hand. Make sure you thank your guests on the day, too – they've travelled a long way to see you say I do.

Au Revoir See your guests off properly, thanking them for making such an effort to come to your big day. As baggage restrictions may make bulky favours impractical, consider supplying your guests with a few treats to get home – a crossword puzzle, sudoku, or colouring book for the littlies goes down a treat. And grab a happy snap of the pair of you with your guests, all of you surrounded by that happy, wedded-bliss glow.

A Sky High

Soiree

Enjoy a big city buzz and celebrate your "I do" at one of the most spectacular venues in the world. Words: Tanya Joslin One of the world’s most exciting cities, a destination wedding in Bangkok means your guests will enjoy a fantastic holiday whilst attending your wedding – but that's not all. As a central airport hub, they then have the opportunity to extend the fun and combine the wedding trip with a holiday in some of the best locations in Asia and the world. For one of the city’s most stylish wedding locations, look towards Tower Club at lebua. This stunning hotel became world-famous with the release of Hollywood’s smash movie, Hangover Part II. Whilst Bangkok boasts a huge range of sights and things for your guests to enjoy, getting them to leave the hotel, with the incredible food, drink and leisure outlets on offer, might well prove to be your toughest job! Boasting some of the largest suites in this dynamic city, Tower Club at lebua offers one, two and three-bedroom suites, ranging from 710 to 2850 sq ft, all with access to the generous club lounge. So, whether your guests are travelling with family, want to share with friends, or prefer the intimacy of a smaller room, you will have everybody’s needs covered! There

10

is even the chance to do the ultimate bucks or hens night before the wedding with a special Hangover Suite, located on the 56th floor. With amazing views of the Chao Phraya River and Bangkok city from four different balconies, this is the suite where the crew based themselves while filming Hangover Part II (you get to sleep where Bradley Cooper slept!). It is as big as a family apartment, accommodating six people. To get the guys or gals in the ultimate hens or bucks mood, lebua spoils their Hangover Suite guests with premium liquor set-up including a bottle of Absolut 100 Vodka, Bulldog Gin, 18-year-old Chivas Regal, and a range of beers and mixers. There is also a 24-hour butler/ concierge to ensure you want for nothing with your special pre-wedding celebration. Mezzaluna is lebua’s flagship fine-dining restaurant and an incredible experience with chef Ryuki Kawasaki now reigning over the open kitchen and bringing his unique Europeanmeets-Asian fusion style to only the freshest ingredients. So fresh are the ingredients, that the menu changes each night. While it would have to be a very small and intimate wedding to actually host your reception at the famous

greatdestinationweddings.com.au

Mezzaluna, it warrants at least a romantic dinner by the couple. Rest assured, if you are wanting a larger wedding, lebua offers ballrooms, designed to feel more like a grand room at a friend’s mansion than an impersonal function room. Complete with special touches such as handpicked flower adornments and one of Bangkok’s most stunning backdrops for your wedding photos. lebua’s talented team of food and beverage masters will ensure the food is raved about for years to come, and will remain a highlight for your guests. For a wedding package tailored to your dreams just contact the resort. And the best part? When the wedding is over, you are already in one of the world’s top honeymoon spots! Stay in Bangkok and discover all this exciting city has to offer, lingering a while in your incredible luxury suite at Tower Club at lebua. Then perhaps take advantage of the easy access to some of Thailand’s spectacular islands or move onto Tower Club at lebua’s sister hotel in Jaipur, one of India’s legendary romantic ‘pink cities’, for the ultimate multi-destination honeymoon. lebua.com

Love,

Everlasting True love lasts a lifetime, so why not celebrate? Reminisce on the wedding day love with one of our favourite excuses for an overseas escape – a vow renewal. Words: Natasha Pavez Why renew?

Save the Date

While the post-wedding day bliss might seem like enough to carry you through all that life has to throw at you, there's absolutely no denying it – life is hard, and sometimes romance falls slightly by the wayside. A vow renewal is a reminder of everything you promised each other back on the big day, surrounded by the ones you love.

Anything goes when you renew your vows – whether you choose to say "I do" for a second time on your first anniversary or your fiftieth, there's no wrong time. "If there are few hard and fast rules for weddings, there are even fewer for renewal of vows celebrations," says Kate.

"It might be that you want to mark a new phase and commitment in your relationship, or that you want to celebrate a milestone," says Kate White, author of The Australian Wedding Book. "A renewal of vows ceremony might not constitute a 'real' wedding in the legal sense, but that doesn't make it any less joyous."

Location, Location Naturally, it's the perfect time to plan an escape overseas or to a destination you simply adore. Did you fall in love with a location you visited on your honeymoon? Have you always dreamed of sunning yourself in the south of France? Or do you even secretly wish you'd just run away to Vegas? Now's your chance. You can take off to myriad locations around the world, ticking off a destination on your travel bucket list at the same time. A sunny island is always a popular choice (Bali, Thailand, the Whitsundays and Pacific Islands boast plenty of coastline for your renewal), or you can indulge in the romantically classic surrounds of Europe. Get in touch with your chosen venue well in advance – often, they'll have a vow renewal package that will take care of all the nitty gritty details.

Be Our Guest As it's not a second wedding, there's no pressure – you're not obligated to invite everyone who saw you exchange vows the first time! This will seriously free up your guest list, so invite those you adore (or escape a deux) and hit up the location of your dreams. If you're renewing on your own, there isn't a whole lot out of the ordinary to consider – just make your plans, book those tickets and head off into wedded bliss (again!). However, if you are inviting guests, make sure to give them plenty of time to plan their time off work so they can be there to see your celebration of love. (Check out Guest Getaway on page 9 for plenty of ideas on how to treat your guests!)

Photography: Fran Bolini

Real life couple Nicole and Leigh renewed their vows after 15 years of wedded bliss, choosing the city of love for their 'I do, part two'. J'adore!

Word to the Wise "Treat this as a fabulous opportunity to express who you really are, or to finally have the wedding you always wanted but perhaps didn't have because of family pressures or a shortage of money," Kate advises. "You can truly be as spontaneous as you wish and concentrate on enjoying yourselves. This is a celebration generated by, and primarily for, you." Remember: at the end of the day, it's all about the love you share – so go on, celebrate in your own romantic idyll and pledge some vows that show just how you cherish one another.

Take an up-close peek at weddings with The Australian Wedding Book by Kate White. Penguin, RRP $75.00

Plenty of celebs have renewed their vows over the years, but there's none more sweet than the late Patrick Swayze's renewal of vows to his wife, Lisa Niemi. The ceremony was at the actor's New Mexico ranch in 2008, with a source reporting, "It was very important to Patrick to express his love and commitment to Lisa. They both mean the world to one another." Be right back, fetching tissues…

Pacific Islands PHOTOS CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: COOK ISLANDS TOURISM (CRAIG OWEN), FIJI VISITOR’S BUREAU, HAWAII VISTORS AND CONVENTION BUREAU, SAMOA TOURISM AUTHORITY

With their romantic atmosphere and dreamy island vibe, it’s no wonder couples flock to the myriad Pacific Islands for a destination wedding.

SAMOA Pacific Islands mean beaches, right? Not so in Samoa – you'll get that, but also plenty of rainforest, mountain and valley views to whet your travel appetite. It's a slow-paced island hideaway that'll have you and your guests relaxed and on top of the world.

Legal requirements Fax a copy of your completed Intent to Marry form, birth certificates and passports (plus divorce documentation or a spouse's death certificate if applicable) to the Ministry of Justice at least 14 days prior to your arrival. You'll also need to be in Samoa for a few days prior to your intended date of marriage, and pay a small fee to the Ministry of Justice in Apia.

FIJI A cheerful 'Bula!' and natural wonders await in Fiji – there's a reason why plenty visit these sunfilled shores, year in and out. Choose a five-star resort for your wedding party or take over your own island, and say your vows at night under the twinkling stars. Romantic, don't you think?

Legal requirements Apply for your marriage licence at least three working days before your wedding – you can do this at the nearest Registrar office or District office in Fiji. You both must provide the following documents to the registrar for verification purposes at least two weeks before the big day: • Original birth certificate • Valid passport • Divorce papers or death certificate, if applicable

VANUATU This tropical paradise will leave you enchanted, with islands dotted through the warm Pacific Ocean. Clear waters and emerald land – paired with world-class resorts – make Vanuatu the ideal place for a laid-back destination wedding.

Legal requirements

• A completed 'Marriage of Foreign Citizens in French Polynesia' application

Contact a wedding organiser – they'll provide you with a marriage application form (and answer all of your questions!). Lodge your application with the Vanuatu government 28 days prior to your wedding, and make sure you're in the country together at least three days prior to your wedding day. Bring your passports, have one witness for each person to prove your identity, and you're sorted.

• A letter signed and dated by both future spouses, addressed to the mayor of the commune chosen for your ceremony • A copy of both your passports (for ID purposes)

HAWAII Between the swaying palm trees and beautiful beaches, you'll think you've just stepped into heaven. Channelling America's luxe vibe with all the laid-back spirit of the Pacific Islands, it's the best of both worlds for a destination wedding.

Legal requirements Regardless of your visa type, you can get married in Hawaii – just make sure you take your passport along to identify yourselves. Ensure you apply for a marriage licence through the Hawaii Department of Health prior to the wedding. You may need to bring your birth certificate and photo ID if you're under 19 years of age to prove you can legally wed; if you've been divorced for less than two months, bring your divorce papers.

TAHITI With 118 islands for your choosing, there's plenty going on in Tahiti for a tranquil, luxurious escape. From coral reefs to palmfringed beaches, aquamarine lagoons to emerald peaks, there's a perfect backdrop to say 'I do'.

Legal requirements To legally marry in Tahiti, set aside three to five months to prepare all your documentation. You'll need to be at least 18 years old, not currently married, not a French national or resident of France, and have two witnesses to accompany you. You'll also need to submit the following:

• A certified copy of both your birth certificates, authenticated with an 'Apostille', translated into French by an approved translator (available on the consulate's website) and legalised by the French Consulate • A 'Certificate of Non-Marital Status' signed by a lawyer, translated into French and legalised by the French Consulate • Proof of residency for both the future spouses. Send all this to the mayor's office of the commune in which you're getting married, at least 45 days prior to the ceremony. On the day, the mayor will perform your ceremony in the presence of two witnesses, hand you your marriage certificate – and done!

COOK ISLANDS With 15 islands making up the beautiful Cook Islands, there's plenty on offer – but no matter where you go, you won't be sacrificing on that divine island time. Follow your heart to Aitutaki Lagoon for the dream South Pacific wedding, with a luxurious resort reception to follow.

Legal requirements You'll need to apply in person to the Registrar of Marriages in the Cook Islands on arrival, giving a minimum of three days notice for processing your application. Bring your passport when filing your Notice of Intended Marriage at the Registrar's Office in Avarua, and ensure you have a copy of the Decree Nisi (divorce documents) if you are divorced. The legal age of consent in the Cook Islands is 20; if you're younger, make sure you have written parental approval. You also cannot apply for this licence outside of the Cook Islands.

COOK ISLANDS | DESTINATION WEDDING

Tiffany & Brent

The Rarotongan Beach Resort & Spa Why did you choose a destination wedding? We met while living overseas and thought it was fitting if we tied the knot overseas too!

Why did you choose Rarotonga? We wanted a beautiful island wedding that was affordable so all our closest friends and family could join in the celebrations – Rarotonga ticked all the boxes!

How did your friends and family react to the news? We like to do things differently and definitely didn’t want a large traditional wedding.

What special touches did you choose for your ceremony? A large glass bottle and paper was on a table to the side for guests to leave us a message

in a bottle. We plan to open these on our first wedding anniversary, being the paper anniversary. We wrote our own vows (which were more humorous than soppy) – and no one was allowed to wear shoes on the beach!

Your favourite moment of the day? After sleeping in separate rooms the night before and successfully avoiding each other until the ceremony we automatically had a quick kiss without thinking in front of our guests and the celebrant… before he said we could. We instantly realized what we had done, everyone had a good giggle and the celebrant announced that he was not needed! During the reception we had a very special performance from Juan Fresco aka David Goodwin (Brent’s brother). He had written us a song. It was hilarious and very ‘us’.

Describe your reception... While we had photos taken, our guests enjoyed bubbles and canapés and a traditional island band and dance troupe performance. The reception commenced in the beach marquee while we watched a beautiful sunset, enjoyed a magnificent meal then drank and danced the night away.

Where did you honeymoon? Cook Islands (Rarotonga & Aitutaki) and French Polynesia.

Any advice for couples planning a similar wedding? Do what you want to do, it’s your wedding. As long as it is reasonably priced, all your favorite friends and family will come with you. You will remember your wedding day and holiday for a life time… and so will everyone else!

Toni & Craig The couple: Toni Bremner & Craig McConnell Wedding date: 22 April 2015 The ceremony: Edgewater Resort & Spa – Beachfront The reception: Edgewater – Umu Hut The accommodation: Edgewater Resort & Spa Bridal gown: Robyn Lee Bridal Wedding coordinator: Amelia Waqa Photographer: Tiffany Curtis Videography: Mark McConnell

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding?

We liked the idea of having a relaxed beach wedding and wanted to go somewhere where we could rely on the weather being warm. We also really liked the idea of having a holiday with our closest friends and family so they could all get to know each other well.

We had 50 guests. Everyone was really excited and loved the wedding as an excuse for a holiday. Since going we have had lots of the guests comment that it was the best holiday they’ve ever had.

up with us when we got to Rarotonga to go over everything in detail and made sure it all ran smoothly. She did an amazing job at setting up the reception which totally blew our expectations. She took all the stress out of planning a wedding so we could enjoy ourselves and the day.

What is your favourite memory of the day?

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

Why did you select the destination and venue you did? We were looking at all the different Pacific Islands and although neither of us had been to Rarotonga before, it got rave reviews from everyone we talked to. The Edgewater Resort was cost effective and family friendly as a lot of our guests had kids. Also, the wedding coordinator was really easy to deal with.

Walking down the aisle together after the ceremony, being showered with flower petals.

What theme or style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on? Beach themed and carried the colours of the local flowers in season throughout.

How did your wedding coordinator assist you? She took care of pretty much everything, and made it all so easy and relaxed. She met

The low stress of it all and getting to spend more time with everyone (before, during and after the wedding).

Did you honeymoon in the same location? No, we carried on to the USA. However after spending a week in Rarotonga, we would have happily stayed and are definitely coming back.

FIJI | DESTINATION WEDDING

Jenna & Ben The couple: Jenna & Ben Dunlop Wedding date: 09 October 2014 The ceremony: Bure Ni Loma Chapel – Outrigger Fiji The reception: Vahavu – Outrigger Fiji The accommodation: Plantation Bure at Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji Bridal gown: Grace Loves Lace Wedding coordinator: Vanessa Steele Photography & Videography: Zoomfiji Honeymoon: Fiji & Bali

Why did you choose a destination wedding? We wanted a wedding that steered away from the stress of organisation! Instead we wanted the whole event to revolve around simplicity and character, with the experience fuelled by the relaxed atmosphere Fiji has to offer.

Why did you select this venue? During a holiday at the Outrigger, we saw another wedding and Ben and I looked at each other in amazement. We wasted no time in speaking with the wedding coordinator. The Outrigger had everything – great location and amenities, and an island vibe that was the essence of our wedding.

What is your favourite memory of the day? The moment the official ceremony had ended

and all the guests, bridal party, and myself, jumped into the pool still wearing our wedding attire! This was a moment that highlighted the feeling of a destination wedding.

Did you have any pre or post wedding activities for your guests? We organised a rehearsal dinner on the night prior to our wedding but it was more of an informal get together to sample the amazing traditional Fijian dinner experience. The day after our wedding we organised some jet boating and a village tour, both of which embraced the natural elements of island life. We were also able to experience the Sigatoka River Safari, some true Fijian culture, and even immersed ourselves in a traditional kava ceremony. It was a fantastic day!

How did your coordinator assist you? From the very first day I met Vanessa, I knew we were in good hands. She was attentive, informative, and extremely pleasant to deal with. Her relaxed personality and sense of humour, as well as her knowledge of destination weddings, added an immense amount of comfort and freedom on our wedding day.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? The ‘vibe’ it created amongst our family and friends. There is a certain sense of freedom you feel when you are on a tropical island with family and friends, an element specific to this kind of wedding. Everyone was there for at least a few days, so happy and relaxed, that it made our wedding feel like it lasted a life time rather than only a day.

blue sky we had on the day all the colours lit up brilliantly against the sand.

I disliked the idea of having to juggle work, kids and organising a large wedding and thought an intimate island wedding would take a lot of the stress out of the whole idea of getting married and would be a lovely relaxing way to start our married life together.

Everyone was so excited they could tie in a well-deserved break and make a holiday out of it. All our guests stayed at Plantation Island resort as they too found it great value and extended their stay to enjoy the island.

How did your coordinator assist you?

Why did you select this venue? After a LOT of research, I chose Plantation Resort as they had many different areas to choose from for both reception and ceremony so we were able to individualise the day to suit. The Lovo feast really appealed to us as it meant we could have a traditional Fijian banquet which was so delicious – and the whole resort is so pictureseque for photos.

42

Your favourite memory of the day? Being picked up in the decorated traditional Fijian chair by my four warriors and carried down to the beach where my son was waiting for me. He walked me the rest of the way to give me away to my gorgeous future husband who was waiting with the cutest smile on his face.

What style did you base your wedding decorations on? I love bright orange and fuschia pink – they are so tropical and colourful. With the perfect

Mandi was simply amazing! I live near her Brisbane office so I even got to meet her and over the 18 months of planning there were many emails back and forth. She went above and beyond her duties even to the extent of a late night phone conversation calming a nervous bride worrying about silly things.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? The weather was warm and tropical, the sun was shining and the water was sparkling – and our photographer took the most gorgeous photos we will treasure forever. Also, we are a blended family so we all got to holiday together and our three children were part of the ceremony.

time!) to the wedding dinner. We had the most relaxing wedding you could imagine.

After deciding to elope we thought we wanted something tropical, exotic and secluded. Fiji ticked all the boxes, plus the distance from Sydney is a reasonable three hours flight!

How did your family and friends react to you eloping?

Why did you select this destination and venue? As we want it something secluded we started it looking for venues outside the main island. Emaho Sekawa gave us all the answers we needed straight away. And that is something so valuable when you are planning a wedding from overseas! The management is approachable and organised. They make things so easy for you to choose what you want and arranged everything from the legal process (in record

Our family and friends were very supportive. We were pursuing our dreams of a romantic tropical wedding and everybody loved that idea.

Your favourite memory of the day? The ceremony. Having our wedding in the most beautiful natural scenario we had ever seen was indescribable. However, we will never forget the ceremony speech from the pastor. It was unforgettable and geniunely romantic.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? The location. We could enjoy 100% of our wedding and an amazing location on top of it. And everything was easier than we thought.

Did you honeymoon here?

How did your coordinator assist you? Every single detail since we started looking for venues. Every single silly question was answered straight away. They made us feel

very comfortable. One of the things we appreciated most was that they could arrange our legal process in no time, as we could just spend four days in Fiji.

Yes, we could enjoy everything about Emaho Sekawa. The food was absolutely divine! And we did amazing activities together around the island like snorkelling, boat tours, walks around the beach. We felt so secluded but at the same time we were pampered like royals. All what you need in a honeymoon.

Natasha & Bryan

Wananavu Beach Resort, Fiji Why did you choose a destination wedding? Our wedding day marked our 10 year anniversary. We had friends who married in Fiji and loved the experience. We decided to get married in Fiji as well, as a small intimate wedding appealed to us, so did the price. We also liked the idea of holidaying with our close friends and family.

Why did you select this destination? We had heard many great things about Fiji and Wananavu Beach Resort. We booked the wedding seven months before we planned to marry and then one month later we flew to Wananavu to check the venue out. We were not disappointed; we fell in love with Fiji and their people. We loved Wananavu Beach Resort. It felt like the real Fiji, it wasn’t over

commercialised and it was very private. Fiji was also a great destination as it is only a 3.5 hour flight from Australia

lead up to the wedding, we communicated via email and Keleni was easy to get a hold of and would reply quickly.

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding?

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

We had 20 guests. At first they were a little surprised by our decision, but then when we told them it was a wedding but also a holiday for them they were excited to attend.

The wedding day itself is a blur. It goes so quickly. It was fantastic that the wedding wasn’t limited to one day; we were able to enjoy our guests’ company all week long.

What is your favourite memory of the day?

Your best advice for a couple planning their own destination wedding?

We would say it was seeing each other for the first time, it was great seeing how the ceremony was decorated and all our close friends and family.

Give your guests plenty of notice of your plan to marry overseas. Make use of online resources. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Receive the help from a wedding planner, as they will communicate with the vendors. Tailor the wedding to what you and your future spouse want – don’t forget it’s your day.

How did your coordinator assist you? Keleni took control over the planning of the wedding and was very helpful. During the

Sarah & Michael The couple: Sarah Jones & Michael Cranfield Wedding date: 07 January 2015 The ceremony: The beachfront, Yasawa Island Resort & Spa The reception: Beachfront table under the stars, Yasawa Island Resort & Spa The accommodation: Lomalagi Bure, Yasawa Island Resort & Spa Bridal gown: A family dress, altered and renewed Wedding coordinator: Lucy Mock Photographer: Anastasia Chomlack

Why did you choose a destination wedding? We wanted something simple and romantic on a beach somewhere spectacular.

Why did you select the destination and venue you did? Fiji is so close to home that it was really convenient for us. We choseYasawa Island Resort & Spa because of its location and that fact that it is small and intimate with not too many other guests. We wanted it to be special and not go to a place that has weddings every day of the week.

46

Did you have guests attend? No - we posted tongue in cheek invitations from the airport when we left – this way people knew we were getting married but we had the location and wedding to ourselves.

What is your favourite memory of the day? There are so many great memories. Walking on the sand to the flower arch, the choir singing incredible Fijian songs, the magical views over the ocean, the dinner under the stars on the beach. Everything was just amazing.

greatdestinationweddings.com.au

What style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on? We had simple flower decorations on the beach prepared by the resort – including a beautiful flower arch that we stood under for the ceremony.

How did your wedding coordinator assist you? Lucy was amazing and basically did everything for us. She arranged for us to go the registry on the mainland before coming to the resort. The service on the beach was simple but just what we wanted. The choir and warriors were great and the dinner on the beach was just the ultimate way to finish our special day.

with them after performing the haka which was a fun way to end celebrations!

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

We wanted to elope to a tropical destination that had friendly people and natural beauty.

What theme or style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on?

Why did you select the destination and venue you did?

Our style was very simple – white in theme. The natural beauty of the impeccably landscaped gardens and the stunning ocean and sunset provided more than enough ambience for us. We had a dinner for two set up on the pier over the water lit with fairy lights and candles which was romantic.

It is a fabulous escape from the everyday and creates a relaxed atmosphere to truly celebrate your love for one another, rather than concerning yourself with the details of the day.

We wanted a destination that offered a wedding package – a smaller boutique resort on the water’s edge. Sinalei and Samoa offered a destination that had natural beauty and a relaxed atmosphere which is what we wanted in a wedding venue – as well as an opportunity to go fishing which was a must for the groom.

What is your favourite memory of the day? So many favourite moments… in a nutshell, feeling completely happy and relaxed on the day. To end the night, staff invited us to dance

How did your wedding coordinator assist you? Jerome arranged the whole package for us, there was nothing for the bride and groom to worry about. He wanted only the best for us and took pride in creating a wedding that suited our relaxed personalities.

What is your best piece of advice for a couple planning their own destination wedding? Embrace the local culture and remember that your wedding will be unique. Don’t try and create the same feel that you would have in your own country as you have chosen a destination wedding to escape your everyday world. Choose a place that suits your interests and personalities; trust that professional staff (like those at Sinalei) are experts on creating a memorable day.

TAHITI | DESTINATION WEDDING

Kristina & Jordan

The Intercontinental, Bora Bora Why did you choose a destination wedding? We wanted something unique, a day just for us rather than focusing on guests and dealing with a high-stress wedding. We wanted something relaxed, where the wedding would flow into the honeymoon and feel like one continuous celebration.

Why did you select this destination and venue? Bora Bora is a one-of-a-kind destination that ticked all the boxes. Certain times of the year have almost guaranteed sunshine and clear skies and The Intercontinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso Spa had so many drawcards: several ceremony options including the beautiful glassbottom overwater chapel; it’s the only resort directly facing Mt Otemanu; and the whole atmosphere sounded magical.

Your favourite memory of the day?

our travel, stopovers, and wedding. Like all weddings we had a couple of hiccups along the way. But Leigh came to the rescue every time. One included our photographer double booking us two months out… Leigh chased photographers until we found our match. It was meant to be, Stephan DeBelle was just amazing!

Kristina: For me I felt like the whole day was all about us, I married my soulmate on a picturesque island in a glass bottom chapel with beautiful traditional Tahitian vows. The whole moment was perfection. Jordan: I can’t pinpoint a particular moment. I would have to say the whole day was awesome.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

What theme or style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on?

We flew away from the stress of a traditional wedding and landed on a tropical island getaway where our wedding day was just for us.... which enabled us to remain in our newlywed love bubble the entire time.

Because we got married in French Polynesia, we thought we would go with the Tahitian theme. The Concierges (Lauré and Sophie) had organised everything decoration wise down to Jordan’s buttonhole, which added to a stress-free wedding.

Cecilia & Ray The couple: Cecilia Shing & Ray Kitic Wedding date: 25 November 2013 The ceremony & reception: The Havannah The accommodation: The Havannah Wedding coordinator: Victoria at The Havannah Photographer: Groovy Banana Honeymoon: The Havannah

Why did you choose a destination wedding? We wanted to combine our wedding and honeymoon in a romantic location.

Why did you select this destination and venue? Ray travels quite a lot with work so we wanted somewhere close to home (Australia) so there was minimal time spent on a plane. We were also looking for a venue that had experience in organising weddings, beautiful weather, could offer privacy with options for activities if desired, and somewhere totally indulgent. After researching numerous locations and deciding on Vanuatu, The Havannah offered everything we were looking for.

50

Did you have guests attend?

How did your coordinator assist you?

No. We have very busy schedules and decided to spend this occasion ‘selfishly’, focused only on each other! We organised a small celebration with family and friends upon our return to Australia.

Victoria was so lovely to deal with from the first phone call and she made every effort to ensure every detail of the day was just as we wanted. With her assistance we chose a sensational photographer, had an absolutely memorable ceremony and enjoyed a totally indulgent dinner as husband and wife.

Your favourite memory of the day? The whole day was magical but the best memory is the feeling of being so relaxed on such a momentous occasion... and seeing my wedding ring which was a total surprise!

What style did you base your wedding decorations on? We wanted something that suited the island setting (hence sans shoes) but modern – and the fabulously-designed bouquet was a perfect match for this.

greatdestinationweddings.com.au

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? The trip was incredibly memorable and we were so lucky to spend such an intimate time together in a great location.

Your best advice for couples planning their own destination wedding? Listen to the wedding coordinator’s suggestions for your day as they know the region and how things will work at your chosen destination.

HAWAII | DESTINATION WEDDING

Katiana & William The couple: Katiana & William Furey Wedding date: 12 April 2014 The ceremony: Aston Kona by the Sea The reception: Lawn & Beach Club room, Aston Hotel Wedding coordinator: Heidi Teves Photographer: Chelsea Abril

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

What is your favourite memory of the day?

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

I’m originally from Kona and wanted my wedding to be in my home town.

I don’t think I could pick just one. It was all amazing, from getting ready in the hotel room, to the beautiful ceremony, to pictures, to the reception. It was a great experience!

Having my husband’s family and our East Coast friends be able to see my home and where I’m from.

Why did you select this venue? It was a nice, small venue that was affordable and we were able to cater our own food and beverages.

Did you have guests attend, and if so, what was their reaction to you choosing a destination wedding? Yes, they were thrilled to be able to attend a wedding on a beautiful island.

What style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on? I wanted something simple and went with a colour scheme of purple, silver, and white.

How did your wedding coordinator assist you? She helped with EVERYTHING! Especially since I was living in Colorado while trying to plan it. She made my bouquets, the altar, the decorations, food, you name it.

Did you honeymoon in the same location? Yes, we stayed out in Waikoloa for a few nights.

What is your best piece of advice for a couple planning their own destination wedding? Keep it simple. Destination weddings are usually at beautiful locations so you don’t need to go all out with décor. You want to be able to enjoy it and relax!

PHOTOS CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: TOURISM AUSTRALIA, TOURISM NEW ZEALAND, TOURISM AUSTRALIA, TOURISM NEW ZEALAND

Get hitched in

Australia & New Zealand It may be home, but it’s filled with destinations aplenty that are perfect for your big day.

AUSTRALIA

NEW ZEALAND

Where do we begin? From coast to country, we're pretty blessed with divine landscapes for a destination wedding.

It's a magical location both north and south, with towering snowtopped peaks meeting rolling green hills. There's the fjords, the golden sandy beaches, dramatic volcanoes, forests, and miles of open plains. And please, don't forget about those divine hot springs.

Sydney and Melbourne grace the pages of the sophisticated couple's travel tome, with the urban-meets-artsy feel certainly beguiling; Brisbane, tucked along the riverbanks, might not be as buzzing but it's just as bewitching. Or, meander into the vines and tie the knot with your honey in the heart of the Barossa and Hunter Valleys. The vineyards are a romantic backdrop to your vows – and believe us, your guests will be ecstatic with the incredible wedding day feast you'll treat them to. We've got over 35,000 kilometres of coastline, so why not take advantage? Beachside, we're spoiled for choice. Hit up a luxury island, like Hamilton Island or the Whitsundays, and spend the days pre- and post-wedding indulging your hedonist side. For a quieter wedding by the water, find a little beach tucked away from prying eyes. There's plenty on offer.

Legal Requirements If you're from Australia, you shouldn't have any surprises on your day! To legally wed your partner, you need to find an authorised marriage celebrant or religious practitioner to conduct your ceremony. You'll then need to give notice of your intention to marry – complete a Notice of Intended Marriage form, sign it together in the presence of a qualified witness, and lodge the notice with your celebrant at least one month prior to your wedding. Make sure your celebrant has evidence of your identity – an original birth certificate or current passport will work. If you've been previously married, you must present originals of your divorce papers, or the original death certificate for a previous spouse.

Sold on New Zealand? We haven't even begun, not really. A destination wedding in New Zealand promises stunning backdrops for your big day, with so much variety you'll be hard pressed to choose your ideal location. You can take your loved ones (or plan an escape for two) to so many places in just one day thanks to the country's compact size. Say “I do” at the Church of the Good Shepard, Lake Tekapo, surrounded by some of the world's most idyllic mountain views. Choose a luxury lodge with exquisite cuisine, perfect for a destination wedding with your loved ones in tow. You can even exchange vows in a hot air balloon, soaring over the Canterbury plains. Whatever you choose, it'll be a wedding you won't forget, for all the right reasons.

Legal requirements If you're legally allowed to marry in your home country, you're legally allowed to get married in New Zealand – easy! If you plan on being in New Zealand more than three days prior to tying the knot, complete a 'Notice of Intended Marriage' form; if not, you'll need to complete some additional forms. All are available and easy to find on the New Zealand Government's Births, Deaths and Marriages website. Then, sign a Statutory Declaration in front of a registrar. Three days after this, you'll be able to pick up your licence and two copies of the Copy of Particulars. Most of this can be completed before arriving in New Zealand, so start planning now.

WHITSUNDAYS | QUEENSLAND Blue Turtle Video Design

Destination weddings are generally smaller than weddings at home, with the bride and groom choosing to spend quality time with their closest friends and family, rather than stage a big event. Some couples stretch the celebrations out for a week – and where better to spend your ‘wedding week’ than the wonderful Whitsundays? Blessed with year-round warm weather, the Whitsundays play host to almost one million visitors a year, so the region is well equipped to take care of you and your guests before and after the big day. There is a raft of trips and tours on offer for the wedding icebreaker, where your guests

can mingle and get to know one another in a fun environment, so they feel more comfortable together at the wedding.

and cafes that welcome party bookings for a post-wedding brunch.

Activities such as sailing around the islands and snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef are sure to bring your guests closer. Or how about an island day-trip or sunset cruise to make everyone feel relaxed?

Or, a BBQ at the Airlie Lagoon is always a great ‘recovery’ event everyone can enjoy, with stunning views over the Coral Sea.

And if you really want to impress the people who are most special to you, why not treat them to a once-in-a-lifetime experience and book them a scenic seaplane tour over the reef and islands!

As with all destination weddings, it is a good idea to hire a wedding coordinator (some premium venues offer in-house coordination services) as they can help with not only the wedding itself but also tours and activities. Some resorts offer all-in-one packages with great weekly accommodation rates if you also hold your wedding reception there.

RoseMae & Andrew The couple: RoseMae & Andrew Davis The ceremony & reception: House of Laurels The accommodation: House of Laurels Bridal gown: Darb Bridal Couture Florist: Mondo Floral Designs Photography: Calli B Photography Honeymoon: Thailand and Singapore

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

How did your wedding coordinator assist on the day?

Was was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

We chose a destination wedding because we wanted to be somewhere beautiful to celebrate our love.

I was our wedding coordinator and organised everything. I found the staff at House of Laurels were really accommodating and helpful with all our wedding preparations.

It was always our first choice to have our wedding in Maleny and the location was perfect for all our guests. The beautiful gardens and surroundings made for a magical day and there were so many amazing photos.

Why did you choose this destination and venue? We loved the Maleny and Montville area, we had visited there a few times while dating and House of Laurels had everything we wanted, it was so beautiful. It was very convenient having the ceremony and reception in the one area, and there are many choices of accommodations available for guests to stay at.

What is your special memory of the day? When we gave out handkerchiefs to our parents with an individual embroidered message. My dad was very emotional and shed a few tears.

What style did your base your decorations on? Vintage shabby chic with a burst of bright colours.

Lauren & Adam The Couple: Lauren & Adam Homer Wedding date: 24 August 2015 The ceremony: Overlooking Fitzroy Island Welcome Bay The reception: Welcome Bay Room The accommodation: Fitzroy Island Resort Wedding gown: Maggie Sottero Photographer: Louise Myers Photography Videography: Threadless Films

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding?

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

Both Adam and I enjoy the beautiful weather in Tropical North Queensland and tend to spend as much time as possible in the Great Barrier Reef. We enjoy a relaxed way of life and we chose to share our special day with our family in a holiday-style atmosphere where we would have guests stay for a longer period, so we could enjoy their company over a few days.

Our guests had the choice of a day trip, overnight or to stay longer over a few days. Those who wanted to stay longer did, while some chose to spend the day. There were options to choose from which is what was appealing and suited our wedding schedule.

The extra time we had to spend with our family and friends on the most beautiful island, which really complemented our lifestyle.

Why did you select this destination? We travel to Fitzroy Island frequently and it’s just a beautiful place to relax and unwind. The island’s beautiful coral beach and turquoise waters seemed the perfect backdrop for our wedding while the resort accommodated all of our guests.

Your best advice for other couples planning a destination wedding?

Standing in front of family and friends on the most beautiful island on the Great Barrier Reef and exchanging our vows.

Being organised so you can enjoy the time with family and friends when you get there. Most places offer to arrange the whole wedding, which is a great option so you can take the time and appreciate the venue.

What style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on?

Did you honeymoon in the same location?

We both like a rustic, kind of shabby-chic theme, which suited a beach style wedding. So we based our decorations on that.

Yes, we stayed a few extra days after the guests left, to enjoy the resort and the rest of the facilities on the island as a married couple.

DESTINATION WEDDING | AUSTRALIA

Asha & Ben The couple: Asha Brooke Stubbs & Ben James West Wedding date: 24 April 2015 The ceremony: Endeavour Chapel, Daydream Island The reception: Lovers Cove, Daydream Island The accommodation: Daydream Island Resort & Spa Bridal gown: Sugar & Spice Wedding coordinator: Jade Lonergan Photographer: Robert Kellet (Total Weddings)

Why did you choose a destination wedding? We have always dreamed of a small intimate wedding without all the stress. We both have rather large families and since we both love to travel getting married away from home seemed like the perfect solution.

Why did you select this venue? As soon as we saw the image of the chapel at Daydream Island we fell in love. We have always wanted to get married by the water but not on the beach and the chapel provided us with the perfect combination and was even better than the picture.

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding? We had seven guests, immediate family only to keep it small and intimate. Our wedding 84

was a surprise for most. Our fathers knew of our plans and were in charge of getting our mothers and siblings to Daydream Island. There was a mixture of reactions, from shock to surprise, tears and then excitement, when all was revealed. In the end it was a perfect day. Our families loved everything and understood why we made this decision. The rest of our family and friends back in Tasmania received a special delivery informing them of our news as we were saying “I do”. I was worried about upsetting some people by eloping, but everyone was so happy for us and had suspected it might have been something we would do one day.

What theme or style did you base your wedding decorations on? Simple and elegant with burlap for some texture, beautiful white flowers, candles and

greatdestinationweddings.com.au

lanterns with fairy light. Lover’s Cove speaks for itself so I wanted to keep it simple and highlight the beauty of the location.

Your favourite memory of the day? Walking down the aisle and realising that this was all finally happening, exactly how we had always dreamed.

How did your coordinator assist you? Jade made our day run seamlessly. Nothing was ever too much trouble and she managed to take the stress out of planning. Usually organising is my thing so I found it quite difficult to put all my faith in someone else whom I had never met for our special day. However, Jade planned everything perfectly and it was just as I had envisaged every detail. I don’t know how I would have done it without her, to be honest.

Melanie & Kyle The couple: Kyle Greaves & Melanie Jinks Wedding date: 13 March 2015 The ceremony: Sunset Beach, Fraser Island The reception: The Ballroom, Kingfisher Bay Resort The accommodation: Kingfisher Bay Resort (Kingfisher Houses) Bridal gown: Mia Solano Wedding coordinator: Kate McCarthy Photographer: Envision Photography

Why did you select the destination and venue you did? There was no doubt we wanted a beach wedding and, having met each other in Hervey Bay, we wanted somewhere local. Upon visiting Kingfisher Bay Resort we were immediately blown away and nowhere else could compare. They offered a very affordable price and the perfect location. We could also have a holiday away with family and friends on top of the wedding day plus have every little detail organised for us... what more can we ask for?

How many guests attended and what was their reaction to you choosing a destination wedding? 80 guests joined us. They were excited for the day, but loved the chance to have a holiday and stay for a few nights at such a beautiful

How did your wedding coordinator assist you?

location with so many things to do. We were very fortunate to have guests travel from Japan for it and their children just loved it!

Your favourite memory of the day? No moment will ever compare to coming down the enchanted forest aisle and when you first make eye contact with your fiancé. The emotions are so overwhelming. Additionally, with everyone enjoying the location and the day, the mood was set and we were very lucky to share this with amazing friends and family.

What style did you base your wedding decorations on? I was fortunate to have the opportunity to have the best of two worlds. A fun, relaxed, beachy theme for the ceremony and then we put our heels on for a classy, elegant reception in the Kingfisher Ballroom.

No little detail was missed – including organising nail polish remover on the day for bridesmaids! As a bride, to be able to organise the perfect day with little time and effort, and then enjoy it because you have someone else worrying about the finer details – well, I don’t think anything else needs to said.

Did you honeymoon in the same location? We are planning our honeymoon on our one year anniversary, so Kingfisher Bay Resort was perfect. We had a mini holiday there with our family and friends and I don’t feel like I missed out.

Asha & Dylan The couple: Asha and Dylan Wedding date: 17 October 2014 The ceremony & reception: Hush Boutique Accommodation The accommodation: Hush Boutique Accommodation Wedding Theme/style: Rustic/Vintage with a Boho Twist Wedding coordinator: Liz Cann Photographer: Emma Steel Photography

Why did you choose a destination wedding? We got stuck into wedding planning but soon discovered we were not really enjoying it. Everyone had an opinion and we seemed to be pleasing no one. So we looked at other options, found Hush and thought, perfect! – a small venue where everyone could stay, and The Coromandel looked like a pretty amazing place to visit.

Why did you select this venue? Hush is in a really pretty seaside town in The Coromandel and only a couple of hours drive from Auckland. When we arrived we could not believe that the place was even better than the photos we saw on their website... it was perfect for us as it is all rustic and charming.

How many guests attended? 20 guests and we all stayed at Hush. The

package was really a wedding over two days and we all got to do fun things like go on the Driving Creek Railway, head to the beach then enjoy the wedding day together.

Your favourite memory of the day? Walking down the garden path with my dad. The sun was shining and everything looked so pretty. The guests were all happy and then I saw Dylan and my heart did a little skip. He looked so spunky and I had a wee moment of thinking, this is just amazing!

good at keeping in touch with email updates and it was nice to wake up and relax and not be rushing around organising or decorating.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? It was just so us. We all loved spending the two days together as a small holiday. It being an intimate wedding, Dylan and I could relax with each of our guests. It was great to see a bit of New Zealand.

Tell us about your honeymoon...

How did your coordinator assist you? Liz planned pretty much everything. We could not have been happier with her services. We hired kombi van Rusty (I think that was Dylan’s highlight!), and had an outdoor bar and canapés. Liz made it all happen without any fuss and it looked amazing. She was really

We stayed on at Hush for a few more nights after the rush of the wedding. Hush has a very cool outdoor kitchen so we cooked in most nights but headed out during the day. We drove over to Whitianga one day and did a cruise to Cathedral Cove. Spectacular!

Get hitched in

Asia

Bustling and beguiling in one instance and serenely spiritual in another, a destination wedding in Asia will entice every one of your senses, no matter your tastes as a couple.

BALI

PHOTOS, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: DREAMSTIME, DHARA DHEVI CHIANG MAI, SHANGRI-LA BORACAY, DREAMSTIME

With glittering golden sands and turquoise waters firmly in the minds of anyone who dreams of Bali, you’d be forgiven for assuming famed beaches are all this location has to offer. But a closer look – and a little bit of a hunt with your sweetheart – proves there’s so much more on offer. When night falls down by the shore, Bali’s party side comes out to play. By day, sophisticated shopping puts you squarely amongst the most luxe retail centres in the world – with a market find or two a must-buy. Craving a different feel? Head to the hills in Ubud. Verdant rice paddies, with their fronds swaying gently in the mountain breeze, are an idyllic wedding day choice with Bali’s true personality on show.

Legal Requirements Australian couples, you’ll need to lodge an application at the Consulate for a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage. In most cases, if you apply within public office hours your certificate will be processed on the same day. You’ll then sign an application in front of a Consular Official (and produce your passport as proof of ID, along with original proof of a marriage dissolution if applicable, such as a decree absolute or death certificate). Your certificate fees will be payable in Indonesian Rupiah, but are based on the exchange rate at the time your application is lodged.

THAILAND Conjure up images of a romantic feast for two over your favourite Thai dish. Now, imagine the scenery – temples cresting

along the skyline, peach-toned sands and glorious amounts of sun cast a golden hue over this land. What more can you ask for? Follow the well-travelled road to discover Thailand in a nutshell, from beach to jungle. Phuket, one of Thailand’s largest islands, is a versatile locale where action-happy couples thrive. Others exchange vows amidst luxurious natural surrounds, such as those found in Laguna, Kamala, Surin and the island of Samui. Serene Chiang Mai, with its jungle-strewn hills and peaks, lures couples from all over the world; Bangkok, madly buzzing 24/7, may attract a more urban-loving couple but it’s just as alluring as the rest of Thailand. And, where sand meets sea, there’s plenty of coastline for you and your guests to enjoy.

Legal Requirements Allow three days in Bangkok to get your paperwork in order before tying the knot. You’ll need to go to your embassy in Thailand to complete declarations to say you’re free and clear to be married. These documents will be translated into Thai, then taken along to the Legislation Division of Consular Affairs Department (along with originals and copies of your passports) to authenticate the Consular Official’s signature. This will take about two days. After, submit your documents to the District registrar who will register the marriage and issue your Thai marriage certificate, following the procedure laid down by Thai law.

PHILIPPINES Compared to the rest of Asia, the Philippines are seemingly a world away. Boracay is the laid-back lovers’ dream – the white sands and crystal-clear ocean may seem cliché, but the vibe here is unparalleled. Say “I do” with sand between your toes and

a cooling breeze catching your veil in Palawan. Elope to a secluded island in the tropics for your vows. Or, take your loved ones to the Intramuros district for a wedding that’s all about el amor.

Legal Requirements You’ll need two documents to legally marry in the Philippines – a Certificate of No Impediment (or CNI, issued by the Australian Embassy in Manila less than 6 months prior to your wedding day), and a marriage licence (issued by the Philippine Government). You and your partner must complete an application form, which must be signed in front of an authorised witness. This – along with your birth certificate or passport, authorisation letter and payment in Philippine Peso – will then be lodged with a Consular Officer at the embassy. If you want an appointment, book well in advance! To apply for a marriage licence, head down to the local city hall with ID and paperwork if you’ve had a previous spouse. You’ll need to wait ten days from your date of application before receiving your licence.

MALAYSIA & SABAH Parts of Malaysia are practically a tourist-free haven – need we say more? We can, because Malaysia is divine. Rushing rivers and towering rainforests are perfect for up-close encounters with exotic wildlife, or you can laze on a beach peacefully (it’s your wedding, do it!). There’s every style on offer for your big day...

Legal Requirements You must be physically present in Malaysia to submit your legal documents (which can all be accessed online), then wait seven days for this to be processed. Bring along ID (confirmed by the Malaysian High Commission in Canberra), your passports and two witnesses. To officially record the marriage, you’ll have to return to the National Registration Office after you’ve had a celebrant perform your wedding vows and pay RM30. Easy!

DESTINATION WEDDING | BALI

Kirsty & Blair The couple: Kirsty & Blair Stevenson Wedding date: 01 May 2015 The ceremony & reception: Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa The accommodation: Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa Length of stay: Five nights at Nusa Dua and four in Seminyak Photographer: Motion Look Bali Wedding coordinator: Eka Yuniari

Why did you choose a destination wedding? We wanted a small wedding with our closest friends and family, and a destination wedding was a way we could achieve that. Plus all the guests could also enjoy a holiday of their own, while celebrating our special occasion.

Why did you decide on this venue? We have been coming to Bali and especially Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa for quite a few years, so the hotel and area are special to us. Plus, we couldn’t have imagined or wanted anywhere else so picture-perfect as Nusa Dua.

Did you have any pre-ceremony entertainment or activities? Not exactly. The great thing about having a destination wedding is that you also get to spend lots of time with your guests around the 130

greatdestinationweddings.com.au

hotel before the ceremony! So I consider the dinners and drinks by the pool bar our preceremony activities!

What theme or style did you base your decorations on? We love frangipanis so our theme/decorations were frangipanis and we were certainly in the right area. Bali has so many beautiful frangipani trees.

Tell us about your reception... We had a very casual wedding. We didn’t want our guests to be too hot or formal and uncomfortable so it was more of a ‘beach-chic’ theme. Our food was a combined sit-down and buffet style, the BBQ buffet mains were some of the best food we have ever eaten. We also had a DJ for entertainment on the dance floor.

What was your wedding highlight? Seeing the ceremony set-up complete. It was AMAZING! It looked like something you would see in a movie but it was real and it was for us. We could not have asked for a more perfect wedding.

Did you honeymoon in the same location? We stayed on for a week in Bali for a ‘mini-moon’, however our real honeymoon is Europe in August.

Any advice for couples planning a similar wedding? Definitely plan to meet with the wedding coordinators in person. It helps get you more of a visual as to what your wedding will look like, especially if there are language barriers. If you have an excellent wedding coordinator like we did, you will not have any issues!

Nadja & Peter The couple: Nadja Sumter & Peter Coquillard Wedding date: 09 August 2015 The ceremony & reception: Villa Atas Awan, Ubud Bali The accommodation: Guest stayed at several hotels, mainly Chapung Sebali, Warwick Ibah, and our home Bridal gown: Elizabeth Fillmore Wedding coordinator: Katrina Simorangkir, Bali Villa Weddings & Events Photographer: Nyree Mckenzie

Why did you choose a destination wedding? I wanted to elope, but Peter convinced me a destination wedding would help keep the wedding size small, and I liked the idea of an adventure abroad!

Why did you select this venue? This is a special place for us, Peter spent six years designing and working to build the home. When we first met we bonded over our love of travel and our desire to live abroad. Now we travel to Bali and are building our future to move there. We hosted our wedding in the place we will eventually call home.

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding? We invited around 150 guests. Overall we received a lot of replies saying, “This is going

to be my one epic vacation for the year!” or “I can’t wait, I’ve already booked my hotel.” Guests who had never been to Bali were so thrilled to have an excuse to go!

traditional Balinese. The ceremony was held on the lawn at sunset. Guests were seated on plush cushions, which later doubled as the seating for low tables at the reception.

Your favourite memory of the day?

How did your coordinator assist you?

Too many! Number one would be the ceremony. In place of a religious ceremony, we received Balinese blessings from a local priest... it was magical. I have another memory of being on the dance floor. I looked over and saw the guests had moved the pillows to the edge of the pool and created a lounge area where everyone was relaxing. I waved and they waved back at me, and I was so happy at how at home they looked.

Katrina was incredible. Because we planned everything from afar she basically transformed our ideas to reality. When we had a vision for low tables, she had them made when we couldn’t rent them. She went above and beyond, and I trusted her opinion. On the day, she coordinated everything seamlessly.

What style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on? We wanted a mixture of bohemian and

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? Taking people out of their comfort zone to a faraway place brings a closeness you just don’t get from throwing a wedding at home. Everyone keeps asking about the reunion trip!

Kayumanis, Bali Why did you choose a destination wedding?

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding?

We wanted someplace where our overseas guests could travel from as far as North America, Australia, and other parts in Asia and make an exotic holiday out of it. I’m originally from Jakarta, so Bali definitely makes an ideal location. Also, the idea of a destination wedding means it’s a limited number of people (just close friends and families), which naturally is more intimate. My husband and I live abroad and apart from most of the guests, so it’s also a once-in-alifetime reunion opportunity that gives us a chance to bond — and that, so far has made the most memorable time of our lives.

We had 88 attend, and most key guests were so excited they booked their flights months ahead. Also, most of them had never been to Bali so I couldn’t wait to show them how amazing the whole trip was going to be!

Why did you select this venue? It’s very intimate, with a unique architectural structure that has Indonesian, Italian and Western influences, giving it a modern minimalist and rustic feel. Not to mention the greenery around the venue, which all worked perfectly together for my love of rustic and French provincial style.

was carried out according to agreed style and concept, that all vendors and props hired for the day arrived in time, as well as ensuring things ran in a timely manner according to schedule.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? For us, it was being the centre of attention, feeling special, loved and cared for by everyone who proved willing to go through any trouble of making arrangements and myriad other obligations that go along with traveling to a distant location... just for us. In return, we got to host them, made sure everyone was accommodated and having a good time and hopefully our guests left with a memorable experience they’ll treasure forever as much as we do. I think a destination wedding has more special and meaningful perks than a typical wedding can offer.

Your favourite memory of the day? People commenting on how beautifully the whole wedding was executed! We didn’t hire a planner, but had many talented friends who participated in the wedding roles, including floral stylist, pastor, MC and baker. Hearing compliments not only gives me pride in putting the team together, but also makes me realise how much our friends love us!

What style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on? Rustic and French provincial style, with a touch of glam.

How did your coordinator assist you? A&B Creative was involved in the wedding concept and presentation, as well as on-theday coordinator. They ensured decoration

Did you honeymoon in the same location? No, I always wanted to go to Europe (still on the list!), but we did have several mini honeymoons here and there around South East Asia.

DESTINATION WEDDING | BALI

Bill & Jessica The couple: Bill Lo & Jessica Lontoh Wedding date: 18 April 2015 The ceremony: Jewel Box, Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort The reception: Retreat Garden, Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort The accommodation: Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort Wedding decorator: Tearose Wedding Designer Wedding coordinator: Imelda Lucky Nine Photographer: Axioo Bali

Why did you choose a destination wedding? Everything started with the beach for us – the trip that got us together, the everlasting relationship and the proposal. So it is only natural we went the full circle and chose a beach wedding to start our new life together.

Why did you select this venue? The resort features one of the most stunning beaches in Bali, three kinds of venues for the ceremony, a truly magnifique resort, amazing food and quality (the seafood BBQ menu is a killer!) and impeccable service. We were assigned a dedicated team who spared no effort to ensure we had the best possible wedding experience. We also got a dedicated bartender who designed our cocktail menu from scratch. Going with Sofitel as the 136

one-stop shop for our wedding was the best decision we made in the preparation process. We are incredibly pleased with the result.

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding? We have always wanted an intimate wedding attended by only close family and friends. Our friends were ecstatic as they also used that as an excuse to go on a long holiday.

Your favourite memory of the day? The vows, the speeches and the surprise dance by our friends. It was very personal and everyone put in a great deal of effort into it.

What style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on? We were going for a simple, natural feel that had a rustic yet elegant touch. We looked at

greatdestinationweddings.com.au

photos of barn and woodlands weddings and mixed it with a laid-back garden and beach setting. Then we discussed it with our ever-so creative concept decorator (Tearose Wedding Designer) who concocted our ideas into something beyond our imaginations.

How did your coordinator assist you? Perfectly – every step of the way. They were very thoughtful, professional, passionate and genuinely concerned about what we wanted in the wedding. They went the extra mile and always strived to accommodate everything we asked for. They made the whole process a joy and stress-free.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? The atmosphere, the intimacy, the weather, the get-away feeling, the togetherness.

Natalie & Brian The couple: Natalie Constantine & Brian Hansen Wedding date: 14 November 2014 The ceremony & reception: Royal Pita Maha, Ubud Bali Wedding coordinator: Botanica Weddings Bridal gown: San Patrick, Barcelona Photographer: Terralogical Videographer: Light & Love Honeymoon: Thailand & Bali

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

people, amazing food and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. It was our version of paradise.

What style did you base your wedding decorations or décor on?

I had always pictured getting married in a tropical paradise. Bali immediately came to mind and we took a holiday to look at locations, seeing many beautiful places but none felt quite right. We had been to a wedding at Villa Botanica in Airlie Beach so our hopes for our wedding were set sky high. When we heard Botanica Weddings were organising weddings in Bali and the venue was in Ubud we knew it would be what we were looking for.

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding?

We wanted our wedding to feel relaxed and above all to be a fun celebration of our lives together. It was extremely important to us that everyone felt included and so we decided on one long table for all our guests. The colour and theme was ‘modern elegance’. We had white flowers and lights and let the scenery speak for itself. We included Champagne sashes on the chairs and the bridesmaid wore a Champagne silk flowing dress.

Why did you select this destination and venue? Bali had long been on our to-do list and after our initial visit we were convinced that it was the right location for our wedding. It had all the things we could ask for: beautiful scenery, lovely

We had 40 guests. We thought it was the perfect size because we were able to spend time with everyone. Our guests were excited to be attending a destination wedding and they all made holidays out of the trip.

Your favourite memory of the day? Our wedding dance. When we walked into the venue it was breathtaking – all our family and friends at one long table under the soft lights and lanterns in the trees. It was magical. The music began and we danced our waltz. It was the one and only time we managed to dance the whole dance through, just as it was meant to be. We couldn’t have been any happier.

How did your coordinator assist you? She was quite simply, amazing. Kathryn went out of her way to make sure that every idea we had could be achieved and on the day every last detail was taken care of. I felt completely assured with the wedding in her hands.

Jenny & Ryan The couple: Jenny & Ryan Cuthbertson Wedding date: 28 March 2015 The ceremony & reception: Villa Tamarama, Semara, Bali The accommodation: Villa Tamarama, Semara, Bali Bridal gown: Couer de Valerie (Vietnam) Wedding coordinator: Bliss Creations Photographer: Dominik Vanyi

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding?

I am from Vietnam and Ryan is from Australia, so it was an easy decision to choose a place in between, where guests could relax and enjoy the event.

Our guests thought it was a wonderful wedding. They enjoyed the day and got a relaxing vacation for themselves, too!

Why did you select this venue? We really wanted a private, outdoor ceremony where we could all face the ocean. I had originally looked at other venues that were on the beach, however Semara’s cliffside views checked all the boxes for what I wanted. Our wedding planners introduced us to Villa Tamarama which gave us enough rooms for all of our family... a gorgeous outdoor lawn, privacy, excellent service and a great bar! I will never forget this beautiful place.

138

Your favourite memory of the day? I think my whole wedding was perfect – I couldn’t have asked for more. The moment we exchanged vows in front of our friends was so emotional, I couldn’t hold back my tears.

What style did you base your wedding decorations or decor on? My style was inspired by an elegant, vintage look. The Bliss team helped plan the decorations and everything came out exactly how we discussed. The special arch, the fun guest book and especially my bouquet were all stunning.

greatdestinationweddings.com.au

How did your coordinator assist you? It was definitely helpful to have a wedding planner. The Bliss Creations team were professional and worked very hard for my special day. I felt so lucky to have them help organize everything.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? It was so wonderful having our closest friends and family with us. It was very intimate and private so a lot of people got to give beautiful speeches. Everyone was dancing and we ended up in the villa’s pool at the end of the night.

Your best advice for couples planning their own destination wedding? Hire a wedding planner. Without Bliss Creations’ help, we would not have found our dream venue or been able to execute our vision.

Kristy & Adam The couple: Kristy Ann Bennett & Adam Troy Palmer Wedding date: 09 May 2014 The ceremony & reception: Sun Island Hotel Kuta Indonesia The accommodation: Sun Island Hotel Kuta and the White Rose Kuta Bridal gown: Mancini Wedding coordinator: Shanti Photographer: Balipic Honeymoon: The White Rose, Legian

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding?

A lot of our friends and family got married in Katherine and Darwin and we decided to do something different. A destination wedding also allowed us to have a holiday and the spend time with our friends. The wedding destination also doubled as the honeymoon destination.

We had around 40 guests – they were excited about a Bali wedding. Many arrived in Bali a week earlier or stayed in for a week after the wedding to explore and have a holiday.

Why did you select this venue? It offered great service, great value for money and is a lovely hotel. At the first initial meeting we had with Shanti to look around and speak with her about the hotel’s wedding packages we were won over straight away. We also chose Sun Island due to its location in Kuta, the heart of Bali. It is central to great shopping centres and the night life as a lot of our guests enjoy the pub/club scene.

What style did you base your wedding decorations on? The team at Sun Island decorated our ceremony and reception – they did a fantastic job. Decorations included local flowers (yellow frangipanis) lanterns, and traditional Balinese umbrellas to name a few highlights.

How did your coordinator assist you? Shanti was always on the ball and kept in constant contact despite the distance. She assisted in all aspects of the wedding planning and was very helpful. For example, the

groomsmens’ suits were made in Bali and Shanti assisted in organising meetings with the tailor and delivery. She also arranged the make-up artist. We didn’t have to do anything, just show up. One year on and Shanti is still assisting us, helping us book our honeymoon with Sun Island sister resorts, the White Rose and Sun Island Seminyak and organising a beautiful first year wedding anniversary dinner. This is far beyond her call of duty.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? Being in another beautiful country sharing the day with our best friends and family. It’s not very often that we all get together.

Your best advice for couples planning their own destination wedding? Don’t hesitate... just go for it.

Why did you choose a destination wedding? Bali is where we went on our first overseas holiday together and we just fell in love with the whole experience.

Why did you select this venue? The White Rose was the first hotel we stayed at in Bali and we loved it. The rooms are great, the gardens are beautiful, the staff are friendly... so it made sense.

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding? We had approximately 25 guests (including us and our daughter) and they all loved the idea. The majority had visited Bali before and they love it also. There were a few who hadn’t visited Bali before and they were very excited to go somewhere new. Everybody had a wonderful time. 140

Your favourite memory of the day? Other than becoming husband and wife of course, we loved having our daughter involved in our special day. Also, because we had a smaller number of guests we got more than enough opportunity to socialise with everyone and enjoy our day.

accommodation and much more. On the day she was amazing, getting the ceremony and reception set up just as we wanted it, making sure Brett and the guys were getting ready on time and making sure that I didn’t spent too long outside in the heat once my makeup and hair were done.

What style did you base your decorations on?

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

Frangipanis with Western decorations and food. Frangipanis make sense because it’s Bali and they are everywhere … and they are my favourite flower.

Having Shanti organise everything made it stress free for us. All we had to organise were invitations, getting there and what we were wearing. Shanti had the rest under control. Also, we got to spend 16 wonderful days in Bali with our family and friends and had a unbelievable holiday and wedding.

How did your coordinator assist you? Shanti was amazing right from the first email we sent enquiring about what’s included and pricing. She advised on everything, from what documents we needed to drinks, food, decorations, flowers, hair and makeup,

Why did you choose a destination wedding? We chose a Bali wedding because of the lovely warm weather and affordable packages. We were already holidaying in Bali with our family and thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to have a private and special blessing ceremony with the children there.

Why did you select this venue? After meeting with Shanti, our wedding coordinator, we felt we were in great hands. She made it feel affordable and easy to arrange everything in such a short amount of time. We wanted the rooftop poolside as the venue because of the serenity and peaceful setting. On the day, we were so surprised at all the flowers, lanterns and decorations that made it look extra special! The rooftop is also 142

very private and we had it all to ourselves for the ceremony, photos and wedding dinner. The staff at Sun Island make everything so happy, easy and make you feel nothing is too much trouble.

Did you have guests attend? Yes, our children and they were thrilled and excited for us.

Your favourite memory of the day? The children’s happy faces, the beautiful romantic setting, and the lovely dinner set up on the ‘flower road’.

What theme or style did you base your wedding decorations or decor? Bali Frangipani. Our dinner was set up on the flower road alongside the pool. This was very beautiful as the sun set and the lanterns were

lit over the pool. The food was delicious and enjoyed by all!

How did your coordinator assist you? Shanti did everything for us! She made it worry-free and stress-free for us all. Our guest list was only six but Shanti and her team still made it all very special and the day went very smoothly. We surprised our children two days before the blessing ceremony and they were very excited and enjoyed all the preparation and lead up to the day. This made our holiday so exciting and special that Wayne, myself and the kids will never forget!

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? Everything was very romantic, calming and beautiful. Very affordable and enjoyable.

Constance & Alex The couple: Constance & Alex Wedding date: 27 March 2015 The ceremony & reception: Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa The accommodation: Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa Wedding coordinator: Alexandra Chin Photographer: Vincent Ng – All About Love

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

How did your guests react to you having a destination wedding?

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

We wanted to do something a little different and had decided that getting married back home wasn’t something we were too interested in. A destination wedding seemed like the right thing for us.

We had 44 guests and people were mostly positive about our choice to get married in Borneo. Many were excited by the location and thought it a good excuse for a holiday.

The majority of our guests stayed at the resort where we were getting married, so it was great to have that extra time with everyone before the wedding. Everyone was relaxed and in holiday mode, making the lead up to our wedding really fun and memorable.

Why did you select this destination? I came across the wedding pavilion in a search and could not look past it. Everything about the location looked idyllic and beautiful and somewhere I knew would make for a beautiful wedding. I visited the resort about a year before the wedding and fell in love with the place. In addition, the resort was flexible and accommodating and didn’t lock us into a rigid package. We had lots of freedom to plan the day, as we wanted.

What is your favourite memory of the day? Walking down the aisle with my dad to meet Alex. It was a special moment.

Did you honeymoon in the same location?

How did your wedding coordinator assist you?

We stayed in Borneo for a few days after the wedding and then spent some time in Bhutan and Thailand.

I knew what I wanted. Alexandra was in charge of bringing all of that together. Everything looked as I imagined. It was a beautiful day!

Your best advice for a couple planning a destination wedding? Know what you want and back that up with lots of examples and pictures – it makes communicating over email a lot easier.

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

What is your favourite memory of the day?

Because it allows us to be creative with our own style and tastes. It also fulfills our dream of a beachfront reception. At the same time, it served as a vacation for most of our guests.

The awesome fireworks show synchronised with the bride’s siblings singing live – it was the best finale.

Why did you select this venue?

They were very delighted to witness a unique and beautiful wedding different from the typical indoor reception.

From the beginning of the wedding planning, we had several meetings with our coordinator. She would give us detailed updates about our

Why did you choose a destination wedding? As we live in Thailand, we found ourselves immediately taken with the enchanting, exotic, romantic ambiance of this beautiful isle. The view is a simply breathtaking! That got us thinking, why don’t we give our families and friends the pleasure of celebrating our wedding in this beautiful place and with a holiday to remember? Our family and friends will need to book flights and hotels regardless of the wedding location. So why not have the venue somewhere very special so that the trip is worth their while?

Why did you select this venue? The atmosphere of Twinpalms Resort is elegantly refined and soothingly relaxed all at once. They make you feel at home!

How many guests did you have and what was their reaction to you choosing a destination wedding?

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? Having a different and special wedding.

Your best piece of advice for a couple planning their own destination wedding?

What is your favourite memory of the day?

Have already in mind what you really want in your wedding. Choose a good coordinator wedding to assist you all the time, and enjoy it!

The place, the sea, the decorations, my husband waiting for me at the altar, the smiles of my dearest.

We went to Santa Cruz de Tenerife for couple of weeks. It was great.

DESTINATION WEDDING | THAILAND

Penny & Marcus The couple: Penny Shen & Marcus Westling Wedding date: 28 March 2015 The ceremony: Beachside, The Racha The accommodation: Grand Pool Suite at The Racha Wedding coordinator: Wassana Suwanbenjapon (Whan) Bridal gown: ‘White’ by Vera Wang Photographer: Jaran Kewklam

Why did you choose a destination wedding?

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding?

We wanted a beautiful backdrop, something that would be (relatively) stress free to organize, and a place that our guests (who were travelling in from around the world) could enjoy after the wedding for a relaxing vacation. A destination beach wedding met all the criteria and allowed us to make a little vacation of it for ourselves as well!

We had about 40 guests fly in for the weekend, and they loved it! It was the first time for many of them to visit Thailand (and Asia) so they turned the trip into a longer vacation to enjoy other parts of the beautiful country.

Why did you select this destination? We knew pretty early on that it would be in Thailand, it was more a matter of choosing the location from all the wonderful places in the country. Having said that, as soon as we arrived at The Racha we knew we had found our island. The crystal-clear water, the perfect sunsets, the stunning beach, and of course the very friendly (and helpful) staff made it a very easy decision. 146

Your favourite memory of the day? It’s hard to choose just one memory from such an amazing day – the ceremony, dinner by the beach, fireworks, Chinese lanterns, the after party – it was all very special. If we had to choose one memory, it we would be the ceremony itself – being able to get married in paradise, surrounded by our closest friends and family is a memory that we will cherish forever.

greatdestinationweddings.com.au

How did your coordinator assist you? Our coordinator Whan was amazing. We planned the majority of the wedding via email and she was always quick to provide answers to our questions and share what could be done based on our ideas. From the ceremony to the after party, there was nothing that she wasn’t able to provide her guidance on.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? Getting married in a beautiful location and spending several days (as opposed to a few hours) with our closest friends and family.

Where did you honeymoon? We spent the weekend at The Racha and then went to Phuket for a few days. It wasn’t our ‘honeymoon’, more an opportunity to continue celebrating with loved ones we hadn’t seen in a long time.

opportunity for a holiday on a beautiful island and to escape our chilly Melbourne winter.

We wanted a small intimate beach wedding with close friends and family in a relaxed atmosphere.

What is your favourite memory of the day?

Why did you select this destination and venue?

The whole day! But a special moment was saying our vows while having our toes in the sand, surrounded by close friends and family and the ocean lapping in the background. It was so beautiful and peaceful.

Koh Samui is a special place for us, it was our first overseas holiday together and we have been back many times – it is our second home. After much investigation we choose Tongsai Bay due to the seclusion, beautiful surrounds, amazing reviews, customer service and fivestar service. The resort is absolutely stunning.

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding? We had 55 close friends and family attend and there was much excitement surrounding the idea. Most were thrilled and thought it a great

he was very organised. As we had to organise this from Australia it was important that we felt we could trust Hiro and Tongsai and they proved we certainly could.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding?

Did you have any pre or post wedding activities for your guests? We had the bucks party and hens night over there which was a lot of fun but we wanted to keep it flexible and let our guests enjoy their own holidays without too many activities planned.

How did your coordinator assist you?

Our wedding was unique and one that will never be forgotten. We loved: being able to share such a special overseas trip with our loved ones; having a wedding that lasted a couple of weeks rather than one day; the fact that everything was organised through one person, making it much easier; the price and value for money; the amazing food and cocktails; the fire dancers on the beach; the beautiful balmy night; the ocean backdrop. The list could go on…

Hiro was amazing from start to finish, every single request was answered promptly and

THAILAND | DESTINATION WEDDING

Mingkwan & Alessandro

Centara Grand Beach Resort, Krabi Why did you choose a destination wedding? We wanted to combine the wedding with a holiday to make it unforgettable.

Why did you select this destination and venue? We both love the sea and the sun, so, a tropical country is the perfect choice. We chose a place where we and our guests could also relax and enjoy its natural beauty. From the beginning we were thinking about somewhere with a beautiful beach. And I (Alessandro) happened to spend some holidays in Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Krabi four years before the wedding. When we decided to have our destination wedding in Thailand that seemed to be the perfect setting: comfort in a wild natural environment and a spectacular sea view.

How many guests attended and what was their reaction to you having a destination wedding? We had about 80 guests and all of them shared our same enthusiasm for being in such a nice place and all the setting of wedding ceremony and reception.

Your favourite memory of the day? Alessandro: The view of the bride in her traditional Thai-style dress. Mingkwan: Everything was perfect… the smiles and laughter of our guests and especially the groom’s best man crying after our thank you speech.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? It’s like having the wedding and honeymoon at the same time, except for the fact that you have to take care of your guests and wedding arrangements too!

What theme or style did you base your wedding decorations on? Tropical colorful decorations.

How did your wedding coordinator assist you? She assisted us in a very professional way for all logistics, planning, coordinating with the different resort departments – and all this with a smile always on her face.

THAILAND | DESTINATION WEDDING

Bethany & Nick

Rayavadee, Krabi Why did you choose a destination wedding? We always wanted to do something special and a bit different. Being from England the weather is so unpredictable and we wanted to ensure the sun was shining on our day.

Why did you select this destination? We fell in love with Thailand when we first visited in 2007 and for us that was the only place we wanted to get married. We found Rayavadee when planning a trip with friends and I always said, should the time come, I wanted to get married in The Grotto; I knew it would definitely have the WOW factor for us and our guests as well as being such a wonderful romantic setting.

How did your guests react to you choosing a destination wedding? We had 33 guests in total which was a lot more than we expected; it is really humbling to know your friends will travel halfway around the world to spend such a special day with you. Most people were extremely excited and it opened up to them a destination they may never have gone to had it not been for our wedding.

Your favourite memory of the day?

How did your coordinator assist you?

It is hard to pick one moment... all I can say is that everything was beyond my wildest dreams and perfect. I sincerely believe we got married in one of the most beautiful locations in the world and being able to walk along white sand with my new husband surrounded by limestone cliffs felt truly magical.

In the run up to the wedding Khun Lisa was unbelievable; always available on Skype to talk whenever I needed advice or had questions and providing recommendations. Everything we spoke about, and she promised would happen, was there waiting for us. Nucharee was with us in the days leading up to the wedding and throughout the wedding day. Words really can’t describe how brilliant she was. Together they took any stress out of our wedding and made it run smoothly. My husband was blown away by it all and commented on how Nucharee seemed to know him better than himself!

Did you have any pre or post wedding activities for your guests? The great thing about a destination wedding is you are with friends and family on holiday, so the whole time feels like one huge wedding. We all met in Bangkok before the wedding and had a stag/hen party – Hangovertini’s from The Sky Bar at Lebua State Tower followed by drinks and dancing in Bangkok. We all then flew to Krabi where we organized a boat trip for the day before the wedding so our guests had a chance to meet. We cliff dived, jumped off the boat, snorkeled and finished the day with a fantastic meal and a cruise back to Railay at sunset – magical.

What was the best thing about having a destination wedding? Being on holiday with your closest friends and family and enjoying that time together defines your whole wedding experience. Looking back on our video it is so great to see how happy everyone was. Plus, having a great team on hand at Rayavadee really made my wedding planning experience a joyful one.
