Lexington Junior League

History of The

Junior League of Lexington Charity Horse Show In 1937 an event was born, The Junior League of Lexington Horse Show. As the Junior League president, Marie Kittrell saw that there was a need for more funds to pay for the good work that was being done and she decided they would hold a horse show. That first year ten thousand dollars in prize money brought in two hundred and sixteen horses from sixteen states. It was a smashing success and that show continues today.

Page 12

The mission of the Junior League of Lexington is to promote volunteerism, community outreach, and help the community through charitable works. The proceeds from the show go to helping fund the work of the League. Before the first horse show the league would bring in money from holding teas and follies, but were never able to bring in much more than $900, that was until the horse show that first year the show brought in over $5000 profit and it has been going strong ever since. As the years progressed the show has grown, bringing in money not only to the Junior League, but also to the Lexington area. Each year competitors and spectators from around the country and across the oceans make the journey to Lexington. The local economy grows with the influx of people all needing places to stay and good Kentucky food to eat. People are drawn in for the show, but some have found it hard to leave. There are many horse farms in Lexington that would not be there today if there had been no Junior league horse show. Castleton Farm began when Francis Dodge VanLennep participated in the show and decided that Kentucky was the place for her. Over time she founded a Standardbred farm, built the Red Mile Club House, and became a patron of the Red Mile. To say that the Junior League horse show is a jewel is not far off, it is the first jewel in the “Triple Crown of American Saddlebred competitions. It is followed by the Kentucky State Fair Show and the American Royal Horse Show in Kansas City. To competitors these three shows represent the highest echelon of Saddlebred competition... ribbons won are cherished.

News NATIONAL HORSEMAN SIGNS ON AS OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF NHS “GOOD HANDS” FINALS National Horseman magazine now is the “Official Sponsor” of the prestigious NHS “Good Hands” Finals to be held at Mid-America Mane Event Show, October 2326, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. This partnership allows for two historical entities from the Saddlebred community to come together to showcase and celebrate saddle seat equitation. Announcement was made by the Good Hands Finals Committee and Mid-America Horse Show Association. National Horseman, founded in 1865, has been an anchor in the Saddlebred community and the show horse world. Earlier this year, Allison Lambert took over as publisher with a commitment to present beautiful photography, interesting features and cutting edge design as well as up-to-date news. She chose to partner with the NHS Good Hands Finals to promote the precision and skill of the ride as well as the beauty of saddle seat equitation. According to Allison, “In my first year as publisher of National Horseman, it was especially important for me to give back to the industry that has given me so much. When presented with the opportunity to partner with Good Hands, I was not only honored and humbled by the notion, but extremely thrilled by the possibility. I believe strongly in the support and promotion of our equitation program, as it’s an essential part of the foundation of our business. Many of the greatest trainers, breeders, and amateurs in our industry today are former equitation riders whose skills and love for the breed were cemented by preparing for and competing in challenging equitation championships like the NHS Good Hands”. The NHS Good Hands Finals is the oldest saddle seat equitation finals in the country. It dates back to 1929 and for many years was held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In 2009, the finals moved to the more centrally located Mane Event Show, where participation has grown by 78%, making Good Hands the largest of the “triple crown” finals. It is the goal of Mid-America Horse Show Association, National Horseman and the Good Hands Finals Committee to build upon the traditions already set, to continue to grow this finals and promote saddle seat equitation. National Horseman’s sponsorship enables the committee to provide more incentives to qualified riders and to host an added Friday night celebration honoring the riders for the entire community attending the show. Riders compete at shows throughout the season to qualify for the 2014 NHS Good Hands Finals. Class specs, judging criteria and finals procedures are detailed in the USEF Rule Book. The Good Hands Committee is made up of Jessica Curl, Jessica Moctezuma and Lindsay Shearman who bring great enthusiasm, energy and an appreciation for what it takes to excel in show ring competition. Sharon Gardner, former equitation “mom” and current Mid-America president, serves as advisor to the committee. For more information or to support the Good Hands Finals, contact Jessica Curl at (913) 544-8009 or J.curl_22@yahoo.com.
