here is some cautious optimism in the motor trade both north and south. Lookers, owners of the Charles Hurst Group in Northern Ireland, has posted some impressive sales figures for 2012, showing that both new cars sales and parts sales on the rise. Meanwhile, south of the border, Land Rover has just opened three new dealerships and Jaguar one new dealership, while both Suzuki and Kia have also opened new franchises. While dealers here may not be enjoying the double digit percentage rise in sales that their counterparts in the south of England are, there are signs that 2013 might be the best year for the motor trade for quite a while...

New Dealers for Jaguar Land Rover Ireland
J
aguar Land Rover Ireland has expanded its retail networks with the appointment of three new Land Rover dealers and an additional new Jaguar dealer. In Dublin, HB Dennis has been appointed as a Land Rover Authorised Dealer for Sales and Aftersales. Based in Airside Motor Park, Swords, Co. Dublin, HB Dennis is owned and operated by the Joe Duffy Motor Group. Commenting on the recent appointment, Gavin Hydes, Managing Director of
the Joe Duffy Motor Group said: “We are delighted to have acquired the Land Rover business in North Dublin and look forward to welcoming Land Rover customers old and new to our showrooms in Airside”. In Kildare, existing Land Rover Authorised Repairer, N. Conlan & Sons of Rathangan has extended its remit to Land Rover Authorised Sales Dealer. Appointed as a Land Rover Authorised
Repairer in 2010, N. Conlan & Sons will build on their experience and expertise with the Land Rover brand. Established in 1965, N. Conlan & Sons is a family-run business. Raymond Conlan, Managing Director commented, “This is a very positive move for us and we are very pleased to be developing our Land Rover business to meet the growing demands of our customers here in Kildare”. The appointment of Lyons of Limerick as both Jaguar and Land Rover Authorised Dealer for Sales and Aftersales completes the current expansion of Jaguar Land Rover Ireland’s retail networks. Based on the Ballysimon Road, Lyons of Limerick will bring their many years of experience in customer service to Jaguar and Land Rover customers in the Limerick area. Speaking at the announcement, Ken Lyons, Dealer Principal, said, “We are delighted to take on the Jaguar and Land Rover franchises at Lyons of Limerick. Groupauto launches approved garages network G
ROUPAUTO UK & Ireland Ltd, the UK’s largest trading group, in conjunction with its partner suppliers has developed a brand new garage initiative that both answers criticisms from the aftermarket and will provide motorists with the means to find the independent service and repair garage they are looking for. The Approved Garages programme is a not-for-profit initiative that will provide consumers with a network of trusted independent garages delivering quality and transparency, while also providing the garages in the scheme with new and repeat business. These dual benefits will be made possible through the development of a fast and user-friendly website - www.
4 - garagetrader
approvedgarages.co.uk - through which motorists can find, cost and book their car service and that will therefore drive business to the Approved Garages network. Garages in the Approved Garages network cannot simply sign up, they have to provide guarantees for their quality and reputation, subscribe to Motor Codes, adhere to Approved Garages procedures and be selected by invitation only. The garages commitment to the programme is reciprocated as they will have access to technical training programmes and their technicians positively encouraged to attend the courses that eXponentia has to offer. They will also have their annual Motor Codes subscription provided free of
charge. The Approved Garages programme was launched to the trade throughout January and February via a series of regional presentations and face-to-face meetings during which the concept and vision for the network was explained and over the next six months, the objective is to recruit as many quality garages into the Approved Garages network as possible. The Approved Garages network doesn’t necessarily work in opposition to other schemes, instead it is designed to work alongside them, to provide a network of garages that motorists can trust. It also does not require participating garages
to adopt a corporate style or branding. It is simply designed to link motorists with a need, to those most skilled and trustworthy to provide the solution to it. The purpose of the Approved Garages network is to challenge the negative perception that many motorists have of the independent garage. The only way to do that is to channel genuine enquiries from motorists that need to find a reputable garage through to a network that will do a quality job. This will raise the reputation of the network, the individual garages within it and the reputation of the independent automotive aftermarket. ■

Lookers turnover and profit increase L
ookers, parent company of the Charles Hurst Group, recently announced its annual results for the year for 2012. Financial highlights include revenue of £2.06 billion (2011: £1.90 billion), adjusted profit before tax increased to £36.8 million (2011: £33.8m), profit before tax increased to £35.3m (2011: £31.4m) and operational cash flow improved at £66.1m (2011: £58.0m). Operational highlights include record performance from the motor division, strong growth in used car volumes and margins, resilient performance from its independent aftermarket parts division, and revenue maintained in aftersales. Lookers chief executive Peter Jones said: “We are pleased to have delivered another strong trading performance in 2012 and we have now had four successive years of increased profits. “Our motor division has produced an excellent result and the parts division has delivered a resilient performance in challenging market conditions. Operational cash flow for the year was particularly positive, resulting in a strengthened balance sheet. “These results give us further confidence that we can continue to grow the business in 2013, despite the fact that short term market conditions remain challenging. “As economic conditions improve over the medium term, Lookers is well placed to take advantage of future growth in the new and used car markets and increased demand for aftersales and parts.” Phil White, Lookers’ chairman, said: “The motor division has made excellent progress and delivered a very strong performance in the period, through increased volumes of new and used retail cars at improved margins.
“Despite suffering from a marginal reduction in turnover in the first half of the year, the parts division recovered well in the second half and continues to produce good results, with a stable return on sales of 6% and providing a significant contribution to group earnings. “Product development and marketing initiatives introduced during the year are also having a positive impact in the parts division with turnover in the second half of the year being higher than last year. “The aftersales bias of the business and our improved performance over the last four years demonstrates the ability of the group to perform well in a challenging market.” White also said money was available for acquisitions. The group sold or closed four underperforming businesses, added seven additional franchise businesses and made three new acquisitions: Lomond Motors Limited which operates four Audi Centre dealerships in Scotland, as well as the distribution of trade parts for the VW Group Fleet Financial (N.I.) Limited, a contract hire and leasing company based in Belfast The purchase of a Seat and Skoda dealership in Manchester, complementing the Stockportbased Seat and Skoda dealerships. New cars group sales were up 12% on 2011 volumes. In fleet, volumes fell 9.4%, due to reduced sales in low margin business. Gross margin increased 3.7% on retail and 19% on fleet business. In Aftersales turnover was up 2.8%, but focus on older vehicles meant margins fell from 42% to 40%. Used cars volumes increased 12% year-onyear and gross profit per unit 10.5%. ■

ig Henry’ as he is affectionately known in Toyota circles is retiring to a slightly quieter life in Annahilt, County Down. Henry has had an action packed career firstly with Neville Johnson Garages and then Charles Hurst Toyota looking after events, exhibitions and hospitality for the Northern Ireland Toyota Dealer Network. Henry started work with Neville Johnson Garages in 1973 and not long after he started he was helping Neville Johnson put in some fence posts... Henry went to straighten up one of the posts just as Neville brought the sledgehammer down, smashing Henry’s thumb in the process. Henry, who seems to be nearly oblivious to pain, wrapped some tape around his thumb and carried on! On another occasion, Henry was helping Sydney Storey build a lift shaft. Sydney was up the shaft and Henry heard Sydney shout something down to him... it may have been ‘Watch out’, but Henry put his head up the lift shaft to see what was wrong with Sydney only to be hit on the forehead by a half brick that Sydney had just dropped. It split his head open and required a hospital visit that time. On a separate
occasion Henry also lost the sight of one eye after getting a Hilti-gun nail in it. On a happier note, Henry was named ‘Toyota UK Employee of the Year’ in 1996 for all his great work and efforts and at the time International Motor Show stand builder Len Willis said, “I have worked with Henry for over 20 years and nothing is ever too much trouble for him.” Charles Hurst Toyota Dealer Principal Adrian Devitt agrees. “You only have to ask Henry to do something once and you know it will be done. Henry has never been late for an appointment in 40 years. He puts a lot of young guys to shame. All his many friends and colleagues wish him a long and very happy retirement.” “There used to be 18 dealers and 3 hospitality units that I looked after,” recalls Henry. “I have always been an early riser and it was nothing unusual for me to be on the road at 5-30am several times a week. The Ulster Motor Show and the Balmoral Show were always highlights of the year and really busy times for us but the craic was always great...” Hopefully now Henry will have a quieter and less incident filled retirement. ■

AUTO SALVAGE
Damaged Repairable auctions at Lisburn Auto Salvage established in 1962 by Sam Ellis as a small recovery based concern, the business has grown over the years, turning its main objective to supplying quality salvage to trade and private customers throughout Ireland and as far afield as Europe. This growth was achieved by securing some of the largest and most well known insurance companies and motor salvage contracts. For the past 10 years the business has been operated by Sam’s daughter Carol and her husband James, they quickly became very well known and trusted names in the salvage industry. Over time they soon realised that a salvage auction would bring the business up to the same level as other leading salvage agents in the UK and open the door to a lot more

All the repairable salvage (Category C and category D) are now sold this way every month from their purpose built site, outside Lisburn, Co Antrim. Auctions typically sell between 150 to 250 cars per month, so Lisburn Auto Salvage can guarantee something for everyone whether you are a salvage dealer, operate a body shop or are just a private buyer looking for a new car. “We have only been running the auctions for the past few months, but already we have witnessed a two to three per cent increase on returns,” said James. “We are looking forward to developing the auctions and the level of interest in them even further.” Details of the auctions and photos of the vehicles on offer are available via the website www. PPP GT
Major expansion at PPP Portglenone Peugeot Parts (PPP) has invested in a new tyre recycling plant that is one of the first of its kind in the UK and Ireland.
P
eter O’Kane is the man behind PPP and he started the company back in 1990 as a specialist Peugeot dismantler just outside Portglenone. Over the years PPP has expanded and now offers a tyre recycling service, End of Life Vehicle (ELV) disposal, metal recycling and is an agent for Copart online damaged repairable auctions. The PPP Tyre Recycling division started operating in 2001 and processed used tyres, many of which were from PPP’s own dismantled vehicles. These tyres were broken down into crumbs and were used for playground and leisure surfaces as well as for ground cover in gardens to prevent weeds. In summer 2010 one of PPP’s tyre recycling sites suffered an arson attack and after the fire the
decision was taken to centralise all tyre recycling at PPP’s eight acre site and headquarters on the Gortgole Road, just outside the picturesque town of Portglenone. PPP Tyre Recycling offers a unique recycling and waste management service that enables waste producers from all industrial and business sectors to manage and report their waste, from collection to recovery regardless of the type, volume or location. From the new state of the art multi million pound recycling facility, PPP Tyre recycling has introduced to Ireland the latest in tyre shredding technology, allowing PPP to process waste tyres into an innovative 100% recycled line of products. PPP’s tyre recyling is now centred on landfill engineering, a process> garagetrader - 11
GTPPP
<that forms the basis of landfill waste sites. Tyres are collected from around Ireland and brought to the PPP site where they are shredded. This shredded rubber is eventually laid on top of a plastic liner at the bottom of a rubbish tip. The plastic liner has drains connected to it to collect any contaminated water which is collected in tanks for purification. This ensures that the local water table is not affected by any seepage. The rubbish is then dumped on top of the shredded tyres. The thick layer of shredded tyres prevent any damage to the liner and allows the water to seep away. With PPP managing waste tyres, motor traders, tyre fitters and garages can have peace of mind that their waste stream is fully documented from collection to disposal ensuring the company fulfills its responsibility by disposing of its waste tyres at an approved and fully licensed facility. Full documentation is supplied for any consignment that PPP accepts or collects. As well as the investment in tyre recycling, PPP is now the N Ireland
agent for Copart. Covering around 80% of accident damaged cars in N Ireland, Copart is an online auction site for all categories of accident damaged cars, be it Category B (licensed breakers only), C and D (damaged repairable) and stolen/ recovered cars (Category X). PPP collects all Copart covered accident damaged cars in N Ireland and brings them to their site where they are cleaned, photographed and stored. Copart operates an online auction for PPP’s vehicles every other Tuesday. These auctions are open to both trade and public but membership of Copart is necessary beforehand. Vehicles are bought and paid for online before collection at PPP’s site. Metal recycling is another important part of PPP’s business and the company buys in all types of scrap metal. The combination of the tyre recycling plant and the storage of vehicles for Copart makes PPP one of the biggest and best facilities of its type in Ireland and the company has more development plans for the future. ■

GTMANBAT
Manbat’s ‘Closed Loop’ recycling policy M
anbat is the UK’s largest automotive battery distributor and provides parts wholesalers and their garage customers with the very best in the quality of products it supplies – VARTA®, Lucas and Numax – and the level of service support it delivers – training, marketing and advice. Nowadays however, these important elements also need to be backed up by a reliable waste management policy that ensures that the environmental and legislative responsibilities of those selling batteries to their trade customers are taken seriously and fulfilled completely. This is another area in which Manbat excels and where being part of the Eco-Bat Technologies group brings even greater benefits to its customers. It also allows Manbat to be able to state that its ‘closed-loop’ waste management policy ensures that 99.7% of each battery it collects is recycled.
14 - garagetrader
This is only possible because within the group there are companies that specialise in all the processes that are necessary to enable automotive, commercial vehicle and related batteries to be recycled fully and responsibly. So in addition to Manbat, whose primary function is to distribute and sell new batteries, there are also businesses that dismantle, separate and process the elements that make up each battery. The processed elements are then resupplied into a number of industries as important core products. These include the sulphuric acid in the battery’s electrolyte, which is recycled into gypsum, the battery cases which are recycled into polypropylene and of course the lead, which is processed though Eco-Bat’s own smelters to be supplied as lead strip, wire or shot and as lead ingots to many of the world’s battery manufacturers, so completing the circle.
It is for these reasons that Manbat believes it provides a scrap battery-recycling scheme that is the benchmark for the industry. It can offer its customers a complete service that not only takes the worry out of battery waste, but can also turn that waste into extra profits, which can be ploughed back into the business. As unfortunately seems to be the case with every piece of government legislation, there is an inevitable bundle of paper work that accompanies the disposal of waste batteries. However, Manbat can help its customers deal with the time-consuming and confusing administration process by completing the Environment Agency scrap registration form and ensuring that is then updated annually. For customers that supply a lot of batteries and therefore collect a large number of scrap batteries, Manbat can provide
a scrap battery bin, which can be conveniently located on the premises. When the bin is full, a phone call is all that is required to have the full bin collected and a new scrap bin delivered. Smaller customers however can simply arrange for the collection of the old battery when the new one is being delivered. Bearing in mind the high rate of recycling efficiency that can be achieved from a scrap battery and the high cost of lead on the global metal markets, scrap batteries can yield several hundred pounds per ton. Therefore, sensible waste management can be a profitable exercise as well as being a highly responsible approach to a potentially hazardous waste product. For further details, please call Manbat Customer Services on: 01743 218500 or visit: www. manbat.co.uk

New regulations for Irish bodyshops N
ew legislation in the south of Ireland was recently introduced by the Environmental Protection Agency and affects any workshop that sprays vehicles. The revised regulations on paints and solvents state that re-sprayers are required by law to register with their local authority, and have their premises inspected to ensure that they use appropriate products, dispose of waste in an appropriate manner and take measures to protect the environment. Commenting on the new Regulations Dr. Ian Marnane of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Enforcement said: “The re-spraying of cars is regulated to minimise harmful effects on our environment and health. Car paint materials contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which can evaporate into our atmosphere, even at room temperature. This can cause respiratory illness and have potentially harmful effects on our environment.” The new law addressed some of the concerns of the regulated community and will also provide greater powers to local authorities to enforce the regulations. All existing operators are urged to ensure that they renew their certificates in advance of their expiry date. Dr. Ian Marnane continued: “It is important that people support certified vehicle refinishers in their area. These businesses have made the appropriate investment to ensure that harmful solvents are controlled and prevented from causing environmental damage.” The EPA is now responsible for the appointment of a panel of approved assessors who will carry out the assessment of compliance with the regulations at relevant installations. The initial application fee payable by operators to their local authority has increased from €50 to €70. The fine for uncertified operators is being increased from €3,000 to €5,000. ■

Sikkens Autowave MM 2.0 raises the standard for Basecoats J
on Amor, AkzoNobel’s VR Premium Sales Manager - UK & Ireland, talks to ABP’s Mark Bull about what bodyshops can expect from AkzoNobel this year, and why the launch of Autowave MM 2.0 and other recent innovative products, such as Autosurfacer UV and Autoclear LV Superior, is set to raise the bar for the refinish industry. Jon has a background in automotive manufacture having
worked with many of the world’s largest OEMs. He joined AkzoNobel three years ago, taking on his current role as part of a company-wide restructure to support AkzoNobel’s ambitious growth plans in the automotive sector. Jon says he was attracted to AkzoNobel because of its strength in technology and innovation and this still drives him today. Jon is also upbeat about recent changes at AkzoNobel, confirming:
“The restructure strengthens our offering in the UK market, ensuring we can roll-out technological advances quickly. Through an increase in field sales staff we can work more closely with our customers”. Jon heads up the overall sales operation for the UK and Ireland, plus strategic accounts. He is supported by Peter Daly, for Lesonal and Frank Delaney, for Sikkens. April saw the launch of the first new
with confidence, reducing the risk of mistakes and allowing the business to continue to run smoothly during the transition.
Jon Amor
What difference will Autowave MM 2.0 make to painters? Bodyshops all over Europe have already successfully repaired thousands of vehicles with Autowave MM 2.0 with results highlighting Autowave MM 2.0’s flexibility. It helps painters at every step, whether you are dealing with a spot repair, multiple panel repairs or re-spraying the whole car. In today’s market with painters under constant pressure to meet or beat specified repair times Autowave MM 2.0 enables them to deliver both – speed and controllable results. Right first time is vital.
What is Autowave MM 2.0? Autowave MM 2.0 is more than just an upgrade to Sikken’s current Autowave toners! It’s a major breakthrough in binder and pigment technology delivering a step change in process performance. Why has AkzoNobel launched Autowave MM 2.0? The product has been developed in response to our customers and their need to deliver consistently better results, more quickly with lower overall repair costs. This is the next phase of the continuous improvement programme fundamental to the success of the Sikkens VR range. It is part of AkzoNobel’s commitment to creating products which give bodyshops that all important competitive edge and help them deliver impressive results to their
customer every time. Why do you say this is ‘more than just an upgrade’? Like McLaren, our technology partners in Formula 1, we always build on the strength of tried and tested products; fine-tuning the overall performance and optimizing the product to achieve a high-end result. In the case of Autowave MM 2.0 we are able to deliver significant improvements in performance because we have changed the binders and metallic components of the product range – the backbone of a basecoat system. Bodyshops get the best of both worlds; a new basecoat to help significantly improve their business and the benefits of an upgrade as the product builds on existing knowledge rather than requiring a significant investment in training. This means painters can use the product
You mentioned ‘right first time’ – does this refer to colour accuracy? Colour accuracy is definitely a key factor to getting things right first time. With an easy colour process and a set of powerful colour tools, Autowave MM 2.0 ensures an accurate colour match. Also, when we talk about ‘right first time’ we are referring to each step of the application process. Autowave MM 2.0 has a wide application window, an excellent flow and provides full control of colour accuracy and appearance, giving the painter both reproducible and perfect results. Delivering a very even, uniform appearance directly from the spray gun means painters have complete confidence in the result before applying clearcoat. So this basecoat is not only better, but faster too? Yes, the whole basecoat application process is faster as a result of the substantial reduction in flash-off time between basecoat layers and before applying the clearcoat.
wave of innovation this year with the introduction of Autowave MM 2.0 - a new range of Sikkens waterborne metallic toners and advanced binders. Here I explore how this product range will support bodyshops in meeting the ever increasing pressure to improve the quality of repairs and refinishing whilst reducing costs. ■
This is why we refer to ‘the race being on’ in the Autowave MM 2.0 product literature. It is such a gamechanging product in the vehicle refinishing world we thought we would add a little on-track adrenaline to its rollout. So, we have joined with McLaren and its co-sponsors, Mobil 1, to offer a virtual online racing experience called ‘Play&Spray’. ‘Play&Spray’ sounds interesting… Can you explain more? It is, interesting and fun, our ‘Play&Spray’ game is a version of a popular online racing game already played by 11 million fans worldwide. In ‘Play&Spray’ you can paint your racing cars in your favourite Autowave MM 2.0 colour and painters will be invited to compete online. The overall winner will be given the opportunity to visit the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking and showcase their skills with Sikkens products – I’m definitely going to have a go! What difference will Autowave MM 2.0 make to bodyshops? The advantages I’ve described for painters also reduce costs for bodyshops through energy savings and a significant reduction in process times. This in turn creates potential for more income from the increased capacity. Compared to the existing Autowave basecoat, tests have indicated that the new technology’s shortened flash-off time reduces process times by up to 17% in a typical day, which is on average a 12 minute reduction per booth cycle per vehicle. Plus, energy cost savings of nearly 20% can be achieved! And not forgetting ‘Play&Spray’ … if you think you’ve got what it takes to join ‘The Painters’, then head to www. sikkensvr.com for details on how to play the game. ■

of the colour being measured to be clean and dirt-free. Clean the surface with Permanent Silicone Remover 7010 and then polish the area carefully before measurement. Smooth surface - the surface on which the colour is measured must be level to eliminate the possibility of light penetrating from the sides, as this can cause inaccurate measurements.
Calibrating the instrument Calibrate the ColorDialog when prompted by the device by using the black box and white tile provided. These must be kept clean. Do not use cleaning agents or soap, however, as these contain bleaches that can change the characteristics of the calibration standards. Solvents are not advisable either. To clean, use warm water and a soft cloth. Temperature and humidity during calibration and measurement – the instrument should be calibrated in the same environment and at the same temperature and humidity as during instrument use. The temperature of the surface on which the measurement takes place is
also a factor (some pigments are thermochromatic and change colour according to the temperature). Do not therefore measure surfaces that have been exposed to direct sunlight for a prolonged period. Colour measurement – each colour measurement requires three separate readings of the surface. Each reading must be carried out within the area of the damage. Light conditions during colour measurement – external light conditions can be disregarded during colour measurement as the ColorDialog has its own integrated lighting. Any faulty measurements are indicated on the display. Colour search – when searching for the matching colour, it is possible to narrow down the searching criteria by entering the manufacturer, colour code or paint type. Sample panel for colour comparison – we advise refinishers to spray a sample panel before refinishing and to compare it with the colour on the vehicle. This way, refinishers can be sure of an exact colour match. Care and protection of the instrument – the instrument’s housing
should be protected from direct contact with solvents. When the instrument is not in use, keep the cover on the optical measuring head to protect it. Instrument operation – switch on the instrument by pressing the Operate button. The ColorDialog has a stand-by mode and switches itself off automatically following the completion of the measurement and the data being sent to the PC. Only use AA or LR 6 round cell alkaline batteries. ■

he success of a vehicle refinish depends on many factors, but an accurate colour match is one of the most vital. Daniel Hartland, Spies Hecker UK and Ireland brand marketing coordinator, says, “there are over 45,000 OEM colours in existence worldwide, and about 600 new colours added each year, so colour matching is a mammoth task for refinishers. But it doesn’t have to be, which is why we offer our refinishers the ColorDialog spectrophotometer.” ColorDialog helps refinishers to achieve accurate colour matches quickly and easily. Hartland says, “our refinishers get the most precise colour formula when ColorDialog is used in conjunction with our CRPlus software and digital scales. Training is also vital, which is why we offer a dedicated ColorDialog course at the Refinish Academy in Stevenage. But we also want to provide our refinishers with a reminder to take with them, which is why we have created our Top Ten tips for spot-on colour measurement.” Clean surface - scratches and dirt considerably impair the accuracy of colour measurement. It is therefore particularly important for the surface

Team selection for World Skills 2013 Team selection for Autobody repair, Car Painting and Autotech took place at EMTEC outside Nottingham in March. Riverpark Training was well represented by having all of the competitors in body and paint. Rebecca Wilson, Gary Greer and Emelie Dammare
C
ar Painting was contested between Rebecca Wilson (Bell’s Accident Repair) and Gary Greer (John Lennon’s Accident Repair). Patrick Quinn (Quinn Hearse and Limousine) who had also qualified for
the event could not compete due to a recent appendix operation so had to observe from the side lines. They were also pitted against Emelie Dammare the Swedish competitor for World Skills 2013.
They had to mix, match and apply paint to a wing and door, this was also two tone inside and out, they had to paint a bonnet and measure and mark out a design, carry out a spot repair and colour match a three stage plastic part, all within 22 hours. The tension was obvious throughout as both Rebecca and Gary had high intentions of winning and joining the World Skills UK Team. In the end and after one and a half days of deliberation, the final competitor was announced and Gary Greer will now go forward to World Skills Leipzig 2013. Autobody Repair was contested differently; as Matthew Quinn (Hurst Accident Repair Centre) was the sole contestant he was pitted against Jonas Friis Anderson of Denmark. Matthew had to compete to gain enough marks to ensure he could make the grade of previous competitors at this stage in World Skills and the Danish competitor was more of a bench mark to allow him to
Riverpark Training Apprentices Going for Gold in 2013
see what international competitions are like. Matthew had to remove and replace a complete chassis leg, replace a sectioned chassis leg, replace a quarter panel, repair a badly damaged door to a metal finish and repair three hail damage marks to a bonnet and like the painters all within 22 hours. After long deliberation and one and a half days of judges head scratching, Matthew was finally informed that he had gained enough marks to join the World Skills UK Team. The task ahead for both Gary and Matthew will not be easy, from what we saw of the skill demonstrated from Denmark and Sweden the bench mark for medals at World Skills will be high. Riverpark Training has however committed to support World Skills UK and will provide the facility and trainers every Saturday and any other days we can make available until July to ensure these young apprentices have the best support possible. ■

LIFTS GT
Garage and Workshop Lifts Feature>> Uplifting experience? A lift is an essential piece of equipment in every garage or workshop but it can also be a dangerous one. To reduce the risk of vehicles falling from vehicle lifts it is important that users are fully aware of the safe procedures to be followed. This not only includes the safe dayto-day usage but also includes ensuring that the lift has been correctly installed, regularly maintained and thoroughly examined every 6 months. Fitting and maintaining lifts is a job for qualified experts...
Just some of the stories featured inside...
T
he Garage Equipment Association (GEA) constantly encourages the safe operation of vehicle lifting equipment. There have been a number of well publicised incidents over recent years where vehicles have fallen from 2-post lifts. Therefore to help prevent future incidents it’s imperative that lift owners and operators observe the recommendations from the GEA. Lift operators must be properly trained and be made aware of all risks. Over recent years motor vehicles have grown larger, particularly 4-wheel drives, and correct positioning of vehicle on the lift is essential. Always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines and if lifting on the vehicle body or chassis (wheel free) always use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommend lifting points. Lifting pads must be positioned carefully and adjusted for height if necessary. Simply kicking them into place and hoping for the best is reckless. It is important that the load is evenly distributed across all of the lifting points. The centre of gravity can alter significantly if heavy components (gear box, engine etc.) are removed. Such work should preferably be carried out using a 4-post lift, but if a 2-post lift has to be used, it would be sensible to use supplementary vehicle stands to support the raised vehicle. 2-post vehicle lifts are equipped with arm-locking devices; it’s essential that these devices are engaged when the vehicle is raised. Never be tempted to deactivate safety devices – they are there for a reason. Under current legislation vehicle lifts should be regularly serviced (maintained) by a competent engineer and undergo a thorough
examination by a competent person every 6 months. Thorough examination is in addition to, not a substitute for, regular inspection and ongoing maintenance. In our feature we look at some of the latest lifting products on the market. Make sure your workshop lift is fitted and maintained by experts... ■

Perhaps the most visible sign of the upgraded vans is the incorporation of Zap 2 telescopic work platforms which have been designed to provide the advantages of lightweight ladders and scaffolds whilst offering compact storage and transport dimensions. The new platforms ensure that servicing and installation tasks can be performed safely at heights up to 5.15 metres. Extremely versatile, the work platform features wheels, handrails and stabilisers and is easy to position and erect by a single engineer. The work platforms are transported on the vans’ innovative roof rack system which includes a novel ladder lift. This is operated by the engineer at ground level using a simple twist handle that lifts the work platform onto and off the roof rack in a smooth and effortless movement.

Redmount puts equipment at top of the list W
hen asked about what the most important factors are when setting up a tyre repair depot, or garage repair business, owners may quote location, premises, facilities, staff and so on. Very often the equipment in the workshop will feature towards the bottom of the list, sometimes purchased on a tight budget after everything else has been paid for. And this can be understood, as a lot of purchasers believe most equipment is the same. Redmount International certainly believes this isn’t the case, that the very equipment which will be used day in day out to make money for the repair centre should be given a higher ranking than it normally achieves. Of course there are vast differences in price and quality, and machine specification. But there is also an associated cost with every purchase made, that being the cost of ownership, priced over the lifetime of the equipment. This Cost of Ownership is not only calculated in
the cost of service or spares, but also in lost business should the equipment in question be out of commission for a period of time. And that’s assuming service and spares are still available when you go look for it, long after the warranty has expired! For that very reason, Redmount believe that of equal importance to the equipment itself is where the
equipment is purchased. Redmount believe when a customer purchases an item a promise is made between seller and purchaser. The relationship should not end the moment the transaction is complete, but must extend from there. Assisting the customer in his growth is good business for all parties. For that reason alone Redmount says it only
supplies equipment that it has every confidence in doing the job, backed up at every step with extensive spares and support. Of course Redmount need to be competitive in a very competitive market place (as they are), but not at a compromise to quality A bargain today may turn out to be a very expensive purchase tomorrow.

TIMING BELTS GT
Timing Belt Feature>> Almost every modern car on the road uses a timing belt. It is essential to change it at the correct intervals and it is just as important to replace the existing belt with a top quality OE spec one, otherwise the result could be catastrophic for both the workshop and the customer... Many manufacturers are now specifying not just changing timing belts, but bearings, tensioners and even water pumps as well... Garage Trader looks at the latest developments in the timing belt market as well as a cautionary tale from Schaffler about counterfeit bearings on the market...
Just some of the stories featured inside...
Gates extends its range of timing belt kits with water pump G
ates has strengthened its Synchronous Belt Drive Systems (SBDS) range by adding part numbers to its range of timing belt kits including a water pump. In total Gates now offers 160 different kits with water pump for a wide array of vehicle makes and models. A typical Gates PowerGrip® Kit Plus Water Pump box includes all the parts required for a complete overhaul of the timing belt system. This may include one or more timing belts, tensioner(s), idler(s), necessary accessories, specific installation instructions, and an application-specific water pump, all of guaranteed original equipment (OE) quality. A complete overhaul of the timing belt system is a more economical approach to long-term vehicle repair.
In most cases, replacing a timing belt and including a water pump in the procedure takes about the same amount of time. Not only is it good repair practice, it takes account of the likely wear to the water pump, which has already completed a full duty cycle. To not replace the water pump at the same time is to assume that it will last for another full duty cycle. Peace of mind for the end user is a major benefit, but garage users also appreciate that in the unlikely case that a subsequent drive system problem arises, all of the components will be included in the same inspection and warranty procedure. Benefits for distributors include the ease of parts sourcing, since all necessary components are stored together in one package. The extension of the Gates
PowerGrip® Kit Plus Water Pump range follows recent extensions of its Accessory Belt Drive Systems range
and strengthens the manufacturer’s position as a leader in the drive systems parts supply market.”

Dayco: The complete drive system supplier
D
espite the fact that the trade may primarily know Dayco for its premium quality timing belts and kits, factors and garages should also be aware that the company is fast becoming a major original equipment (OE) manufacturer across all areas of the power transmission sector. As motor factors are obviously specialists in the field of supplying replacement parts within their local area, many will understand why Dayco’s philosophy is to specialise in power transmission products in all their forms and be recognised as a complete drive system supplier. Therefore, in addition to continuing to develop its position as the number one
32 - garagetrader
OE manufacturer of timing belts for the European vehicle manufacturers (VM’s), it is also busy opening manufacturing facilities across the globe to supplement its belts with Dayco manufactured tensioners, dampers and pulleys. Dayco has not become Europe’s largest OE timing belt manufacturer by chance; it has invested in its facilities, its personnel and in the technology necessary to become the preferred product supplier of several VM’s. These VM’s include Ford and VW where it has developed revolutionary products to provide the solution for the manufacturers desire to reduce the capacity and overall dimensions of the engines they design and the demand from government for efficiency and emissions gains. The same desire for quality and product development is behind Dayco’s expansion of its auxiliary product facilities, which allows it to set its sights on the goal of becoming the second largest OE manufacturer of timing drive tensioners for Europe’s VM’s. Therefore the trade needs to recognise Dayco as more than just a belt supplier and that they can have complete confidence in the quality of all the products in its range. However, it is still the belt that defines the quality of the kit. Without an OE quality belt, the rest of the kit is compromised. So who better than Europe’s number one OE timing belt manufacturer to supply the replacement kit? Another one of Dayco’s strengths is that its timing belt kit range is superior to those suppliers that have no belt manufacturing capability and of course factors have immediate access to the complete range through the excellent service offered by Universal Automotive and PR Reilly. In short, the combination of OE quality manufactured products, the range to provide the workshop the complete repair solution, the excellent availability and the technical advice that is provided by Dayco distributors means that factors need to look no further for all their power transmission requirements.

Fake or copied parts are not only illegal, they are a safety risk! by jeff earl, marketing manager, schaeffler automotive aftermarket (uk) ltd
A
s a major technical partner and supplier of Original Equipment (OE) components to the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers, Schaeffler files around 1800 patent applications every year. Employing more than 6000 Research & Development engineers worldwide, Schaeffler is one of the most innovative companies to be found in any industry, and remains at the forefront of the automotive sector thanks to an ongoing commitment to invest in the finest materials, machinery and manpower. We design and manufacture highly advanced components which are loaded with patent protected technology to satisfy the increasingly high demands of our customers, and each individual part requires a huge amount of investment before it can be put into production. By protecting our innovations with patents we try and secure these investments into the future, whilst also giving our customers a long-term high quality solution that they can rely upon. It also makes it difficult for third party manufacturers to replicate the engineering qualities we build in to our products. However, some manufacturers will always try and produce their own versions of our components, either by re-engineering the way they have been designed to operate (as in the case of DMF conversion kits), or in some cases actually producing replicas which infringe our patents. There are obviously issues with both of these scenarios. Firstly, physically changing how something works will affect the dynamics of how that part operates on the vehicle. In other words, changing (or converting) what the vehicle manufacturer originally specified to something completely different could have major consequences on how that vehicle will perform in the future. Secondly, a copied part is not only illegal, it can also be a serious safety issue. These lower cost imitations of
our products have certainly not been designed in partnership with the vehicle manufacturer. They have also not survived thousands of hours of testing before being manufactured using the highest quality materials to the most stringent standards and specifications. One of our most successful hightech patents is for the FAG Repair Insert Unit, a recent innovation that removes the previous requirement of replacing the complete hub assembly on many HGV applications. It is a preassembled, pre-sealed bearing unit that can be simply pressed in to the existing hub to dramatically reduce fitting time and therefore valuable operating hours spent off the road. It is also a much more economical option to buy than a complete hub assembly, and just a few RIU kits can service a multitude of Volvo, DAF and other popular trucks. Unfortunately, spurious RIUs have started to enter the UK aftermarket from countries throughout Asia and the Far East and we can confirm that, as well as illegally breaching our patent rights, they are not produced to the same specifications as an original FAG RIU. Our engineers have stripped down and tested some of the copied units using the same rigorous procedures that our own parts undertake to satisfy the demands of vehicle manufacturers. The results were not good, and you can see from the photos why. Original Equipment manufacturers will only ever deliver the best OE quality products and service, so try not to be taken in by the promise of an equivalent part at a low price. There is a real chance that you could be given a sub-standard copy which is in breach of UK patent laws. Knowingly supplying or fitting a copied part could end up costing a lot more than the few quid saved when you bought it, as more and more manufacturers look to the law to help them recoup the loss of revenue suffered as copies become more prevalent in the market-place. If you then factor in the safety aspects it
becomes even more of a risk, as the cost incurred if an inferior safety critical part fails could be a lot higher, and not just in financial terms. If you think that you have been given a copied part, or you are suspicious about components that appear to
be made by LuK, INA or FAG but have not been supplied in a Schaeffler box, please call our technical hotline on 08457 001100. Finally, remember the golden rule, it may be shiny and it might be cheap – but quality is not just skin deep!
Image 1 shows the comparison between the internal rolling mechanism of an original FAG RIU and the copied unit. Note that the copy has much smaller rollers than the genuine bearing, which will have a negative effect on the load capability and wear rates. Also, none of the materials used are of a sufficient grade for use in the manufacture of safety critical wheel bearings.
Image 2 shows how a sub-standard metal cage has been used instead of the original FAG low friction polymer version. The grease used in the copy was also of a standard specification, rather than specialised high viscosity grease that can withstand the extreme temperatures and conditions that wheel bearings endure.
Image 3 clearly shows the part number ‘F-566196.H195’ (an original FAG reference). So not only is this copy infringing the design patent, but it is also knowingly being sold as an ‘exact’ replica of a genuine FAG RIU
Images 4 & 5 further FAG references being used illegally by a Far Eastern company.

KYB launches new support tool
K
YB products will soon start to be delivered with a QR code on the part number label. Technicians can download a free QR reader app onto their smart phone and can use this to scan the KYB QR code. The code will take them to information which is specific to that part number. They will then be presented with three or four choices (depending on the application). 1. Fitting video: Where available, users can watch a video of how to fit the part to the vehicle. 2. Fitting instructions: Specific to that vehicle. 3. Common information: This is generic information about how to install and dispose of shock absorbers and coil springs. 4. Visual inspection: This is a series of reminders to the technician for other things to look for on the vehicle. Further useful sections will be added over the next few months.

racehorse trainers in history. He is cool, calm and collected. A perfectionist, dedicated to his team of horses, jockeys and stable lads. A very modest man who is never fazed by his incredible achievements.
What is your most effective or personal asset? My redhead! It stands out and makes me be different from the rest - it is the best marketing tool I have. More seriously, I am a calculated risk taker, have great drive and passion, love new ideas and developing strategies and finally, but most importantly, my ability to connect with people.
You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy?
Tell us about your career so far? From a really young age I was always into repairing anything mechanical and being brought up on a farm there was always the opportunity for repairing machinery. I qualified as a motor mechanic and continued in this direction but a back injury resulted in me being forced to change career path resulting in me going back to college to study Business & Information Technology. Arising out of this, I worked in the service department of a local computer company for four years. The opportunity then arose to apply for a position as service manager in a local dealership – I was successful and remained there for eight years. However, I always had a desire to run my own business and I was aware of the potential in developing a bodyshop in the Galway area - we are ten years here and I am totally enjoying it.
Did you plan to get involved in this industry?
Not in the Crash repair Industry… actually not at all, but during my time as a service manager I was subcontracting cars to bodyshops and they would come back late, unfinished, not cleaned etc so I had first hand experience of the need for a professional bodyshop that would serve the motor dealers of Galway. This is what I did and for the first five years we focused on quality trade work and satisfying the retail customer.
What was your biggest disappointment? Three years after we commenced the bodyshop, Marian, the children and I went on a family holiday – our first since starting the business. It was against my better instincts to leave the bodyshop even just for a week and as a result it took me days to unwind. On my return home, I called to the bodyshop and to my horror and disappointment the bodyshop was still open: Wow! It ran without me! This is testament to the staff I employ and had underestimated at the time.
It was the best education experience I’ve had and has stood to me time and time again.
What was the best piece of advice you ever received? “Throw your heart at it and go after it” This is a statement that my late father advised me of as a young lad when I competed with horses. He meant that when you are going to a big fence to first throw your heart over it and then go after it. I constantly use this philosophy in both my business and sporting activities.
Whom do you most admire? In rallying - Colin McRae - his level of passion and commitment was unbelievable; In motor racing - Michael Schumacher – professional, exceptionally technical with a serious mind to read and adapt a race plan; But: The person I most admire has to be Aidan O’Brien, one of the greatest
For all the cars we repair, be it a Mini or a Ferrari, and even having been in the industry for many years, I do not get carried away with road cars. I do love my Mk V Golf Gti 2.0 Turbo so I would update it to a new model. My baby is my E30 M3 EVO 2 that would get an extra polish. However, most importantly, I would order a brand new Pilbeam hillclimb car with a Judd V10 in the back of it so that I could go back and win both the Irish Hillclimb & Northern Ireland Hillclimb championships ...again!!!
How do you relax? I relax on the couch with my wife, Marian, and a bottle of wine; I love fine food so head out to local restaurants for dinner with good company; The best way to clear the head is to go for a long run, either alone or with my running friends and then relax in the Jacuzzi afterwards.
Tell us something surprising about yourself… I am an Ultra Marathon Runner Two years ago I ran a 5k race for the first time. I enjoyed the buzz of it so much that I have not stopped running since. Last year I ran three marathons and two Ultra marathons.
