Editor’s Letter

elcome to the December edition of Northern Woman. I love the AW fashion in the shops at the moment; cosy knits, luxe velvet, metallic and sequins – would it even be Christmas without them? In addition to all of the sparkly style and velvet pieces that are usually in store this time of year, there are lots of new trends for those who want to stand out from the crowd. Matching knitwear two-piece sets, bourgeois style, the puff shoulder and leg of mutton sleeve, are all in vogue at the moment. This month I met with celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli during a recent trip to Belfast, just after he had finished filming Celebrity Hunted. Read about his experience on the programme, his thoughts on his young son’s autism diagnosis, and 2020 restaurant plans on page 24. I also interviewed inspirational local nurse Helena Phelan, founder of Derry/Londonderry choir Warbling Wheezers - aimed at improving the lives of adults who suffer with breathing difficulties. Sales Manager Julie Patterson brings you the Festive Food & Drink section. Northern Man columnist Jeff Meredith rounds up the latest novelty jumpers to hit shops. Beauty writer Claire Craig complies festive beauty must-haves to perfect your partyready look. Also in the beauty section, we have a Christmas gift set

selection. This month’s Blogger Corner writer Lisa Skinner from @wisdomandpennies explains how we can give something back as we treat our loved ones. Lisa showcases some amazing local companies doing great things in and through their products. With so many gift ideas in the pages of NW, selecting the perfect present should be easy – right? Maybe not, according to columnist Eunice Nelson who reflects on Secret Santa with her usual wit. Interiors journalist Róisín Carabine shares home décor ideas in her article ‘20 ways to do Christmas’. Journalist Jade Beecroft explains how to ‘winter-proof your mood’. Presenter Stacey Dooley chats to NW ahead of her Belfast show in February. Rita Doherty (my mother) explains how to make the most out of a city break in Rome. In addition, we bring you readers’ weddings, movie listings, travel reviews, recipes, competitions and a lot more besides. Wishing all of our readers a very Merry Christmas.

ombining all the key trends of AW19, bourgeois styling effortlessly blends an uninterrupted elegance with gaudy grit that’ll give your wardrobe a new season
facelift. Turning the wheel in the direction of timeless classics, this trend couldn’t be easier to nail. One of the most versatile concepts to ever hit the catwalk, a clean cut emphasis on staple pieces means you can mix and match till you’re blue, or in this case, beige, in the face. Forget clashing colours and smacking the world head on with screaming patterns, becoming the ultimate bougie dresser requires a hell of a lot of brown leather,

BLAME IT on the Bougie Play a Parisian for the day and style your wardrobe to the tone of a 1970s wannabe aristocrat with our glowing guide to bourgeois dressing BY LUCY NORRIS delicate pearls and culottes to beat the band. Modesty doesn’t go amiss here either, so think ‘sensible’ knee high boots and lengthy pleated skirts teamed with camel fitted blazers, when you hit the shops in search of this season’s hottest trend. Aiming to be highly wearable, going bougie on a budget is a piece of cake as capsule pieces are what count here. Go on the hunt for that perfect white pussy-bow shirt to pair with blue slim-leg jeans and a muted silk scarf. If you’re thinking beige everything topped off with country checked flares and woolen capes seem like a bit of a yawnfest, we hear you! Swap out pleats and equestrian-esque tweed twin sets for sharp leather and sky-high stilettos. Just because bourgeois is a blast from the past doesn’t mean you can’t incorporate a splash of 21st century edge into the mix. Keep it clean with crisp white shirts and stiff tailoring draped atop leather trousers or an A-line pencil skirt that’ll turn heads the second you enter the room. Top off the look with a monotone neck-scarf and chrome aviators. Ultra-feminine, this trend also allows you to let your inner girly-girl go wild. Pretty delicate blouses tucked into flowing skirts

finished off with a pair of patent leather kitten heels, should replace the classic ‘jeans and a nice top’ look this season. Play around with colours of a muted palette and dress this style up or down by adding wool cardigans, knee-length leather boots and nostalgic handbags to your outfit of the day. Embrace the simple life, mingle contemporary modernism with an age-old elegance and steer your shopping towards fantastically bland soft styles that’ll make an impact by saying nothing at all. Whether you’re dressing for a night on the tiles or a day at the office, bring it back to bougie, et voilà – you’ll be a highfalutin fashionista before you know it!

The leg of mutton sleeve
The leg of mutton sleeve was initially named due to its unusual shape; a voluminous gathering of fabric at the upper arm that tapers to a tight fit from the elbow to the wrist. First seen in fashionable dress in the 1820s, the trend disappeared and returned on and off over the years, and is back in a big puffy way for AW 2019.

GOK WAN’S

Belfast edition
ok Wan’s One Size Fits All 2019 The Style and Body Confidence show came to the Hilton Belfast recently. Gok entertained the crowd with hilarious stories, fashion advice and showcased a roundup of timeless trends and new season fashion from leading local boutiques including Perfect Day, Orchid Lingerie, Peel Boutique, Joli Clothing and more. Members of the audience were invited to nominate a friend to win a makeover sponsored by Dunnes Stores. A number of people shared stories of their loved one, explaining why they deserved to win the pampering prize, and it was Dubliner Sinead Foy who came out on top. Sinead stood up and explained that she drove up from Dublin on her own to attend

the event, as she suffers from low body confidence and Gok Wan is the only person who can instil a sense of confidence in her. She felt she had to nominate herself as nobody in Belfast knew her and she didn’t want to miss the opportunity. Following a resounding applause vote nominating Sinead as the clear winner, she was whisked away for her makeover. Chatting to an excited Sinead prepampering, she told Northern Woman: “It was a little bit terrifying saying: ‘pick me please’. It’s really humbling that everyone voted for me, so kudos to the ladies in Belfast. Lots of people have stopped to chat to me today and wish me good luck – it really is women supporting women here. “Gok is such a ball of energy. If he wasn’t in my life I don’t think I would have any confidence in my body or be able to dress
µµI cut Sinead’s hair to create a more definite fringe. She has fine hair so I volumised it using sea salt spray, added more body and movement, and cleaned up her undercut.∑∑ SEAMUS ATCHISON for my size. A while ago Gok came to Dublin to do a lingerie masterclass and just that one class changed things for me.” MUA Ciara Daly from the Ciara Daly House of Makeup, Belfast, and Seamus Atchison who works from Ciara’s studio and Atchison Hair, Magherafelt, got to work transforming Sinead, before stylists from Dunnes Stores selected an outfit. Chatting to an ecstatic Sinead afterwards she said: “I’m so delighted with the entire look. “I never normally makeup, so it’s a real treat to have a full makeover. I love it!”
µµBecause Sinead doesn’t normally wear a lot of makeup, I thought I’d go for a strong red lip and highlight the eyes and cheeks.∑∑ CIARA DALY

Jean-Christophe in Novelli at City Quays
Jean-Christophe
Novelli
on Celebrity Hunted, 2020 restaurant plans and his son’s autism diagnosis 24
Celebrity Hunted
BY CATRIONA DOHERTY
F
ans of Celebrity Hunted have rooted for Jean-Christophe Novelli as he has been chased all over Britain by intelligence officers and police. The Channel 4 show in aid of Stand up to Cancer finished filming weeks ago but the final had not yet aired at the time of NW going to print. In the programme eight famous faces went on the run and attempted to stay off the radar as a team tried to hunt them down. I caught up with participant JeanChristophe on a recent trip to Belfast to check in at his Novelli at City Quays restaurant in the AC Hotel. “Did you enjoy being part of Celebrity Hunted?” I begin. “I am glad it’s over and I’m glad I was part of it,” Jean-Christophe replies in his distinctive French accent. “I am delighted to see every week the money that is raised – more than last year. This really is fabulous. It has been an amazing experience, I can assure you of that. Only now I am digesting it.”
Valentino, Jean-Christophe, Jean and Jacques
Valentino, Jean-Christophe and Michelle Stand up to Cancer with its aim of beating the disease, is a cause close to JeanChristophe’s heart as his son Valentino was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma when he was only six weeks old. The family have just been told that Valentino, who is now cancer-free, has autism – a diagnosis that Jean-Christophe and his fiancée Michelle Kennedy are finding difficult to deal with. “Two weeks ago, it is something else again… what my son and what my wife went through has been quite hard,” he admits. “I am still shocked. Michelle is not taking it very well obviously. I am not, but the fact that he is alive - for me that is a massive bonus. “Will he ever say ‘I love you’? We don’t know.” Valentino is non-verbal but the bond between mother and son is obvious from looking at the two together Jean-Christophe says. “The relationship between him and his mum is incredible. The love and the way he passes it on - it’s just incredible what’s happening.”
Novelli at City Quays
With Christmas on the horizon JeanChristophe has big plans for Novelli at City Quays he explains: “We have a fantastic menu again. Last year was a great success, this year we have obviously learned from last year you know. We know what will work better and we are ready for it.” Diners have numerous options to choose from including Festive lunch and dinner packages, private dining, casual Christmas socials, Dine and cruise, and lots more. I ask the multi-Michelin Star winner what he has planned to cook for his own Christmas dinner. “I’m not going to plan to cook anything because I never cook on Christmas,” JeanChristophe says. “It’s the only meal of the
year I don’t cook. Why? Because I want to let it to somebody who can do it better, which is my wife. And also we are not trying to make it different, we are just keeping the traditions.” “Have any of your children caught the cooking bug?” I ask. “My seven year old Jacques is the one that cooks the most. He is good actually. My oldest son is quite plain in the way he eats. And my daughter is fantastic – she is has a good palette, same as my Mum, same as me. But Jacques is the one who shows interest.” “Maybe he will follow in your footsteps one day,” I say. “Well I hope so,” Jean-Christophe replies. “If so I hope it is because that is his passion and not because Daddy is doing well.” The chef reflects on fond childhood memories of cooking with his mother when he was a child – always pancakes. “Pancakes with my Mom, because I was always starving, because I love her, and because she didn’t speak too much – that was the three things that kept me next to the kitchen. “I think very quickly I had the ability of learning things and I was very interested.” From his mother’s kitchen the budding chef went on to run successful pancake stalls at the school fetes. “I have to say with pride, I was the most busy stall - making the most money,” he adds with a smile. “After that my first ever real job was a baker. I was 14 and I loved it.”
Looking ahead
“What have you got planned for 2020?” I ask. “I am due to open different restaurants in the UK which I cannot mention as yet. There are always plans and every day is different, I am quite content to see new opportunities develop themselves next year,” Jean-Christophe concludes.

Conversations with Stacey Dooley comes to the Ulster Hall on 23rd February. In this rare live appearance, Stacey talks about her remarkable career so far, where she’s headed next, and how news and investigative journalism are evolving in a constantly shifting media landscape. Tickets cost from £17.50-£22.50, for details see: www.ulsterhall.co.uk
Are you excited to be back on tour?
I am so genuinely excited to be back on tour; I’d never done anything like this prior to my previous tour with Fane in 2018. I didn’t really know what to expect or how it was going to play out or what the reaction was going to be, but it was just a room full of really interesting and really interested people. I also got to meet them afterwards at the book signing; it was brilliant, I loved it.
Do you think the world of documentary film making has changed much since you started out your career?
Yes, I suspect it probably has. I think documentaries have come back into fashion, certainly over the past few years, everyone has a growing obsession with Louis Theroux, it’s at an all-time high. I think we are very curious, there is this insatiable appetite for information. And we are in a position now where we can find out what’s going on around the world. It’s very immediate, so I feel really lucky to be a part of that scene, and documentaries always rate brilliantly and do really well.
What would you say has been your career highlight to date?
Oh wow! I’ve made loads of films, but you’re proud of different films for different reasons. The films we made concerning the Yazidi community in Iraq are some of the ones perhaps I’m most proud of. Having said that, we have just made a really compelling documentary – I think it will be really important – about psychosis and mental health more broadly in South London, so much closer to home. I’m really proud of that.
What is your fondest memory of Strictly Come Dancing?
I shouldn’t say winning, should I? Because that’s too showy. Kev and I loved the Paso. I was never going to be the best dancer; I was against a Pussy Cat Doll (Ashley Roberts) and a girl from Steps (Faye Tozer) – both amazing dancers. So, it was just about

chats to NW ahead of her Belfast Show us taking ownership of our own journey. Performing the Paso was when I felt really proud of what we were able to achieve. It felt like a real story, there was narrative there and it was storytelling in a different way. I loved the Paso so much, it was brilliant. Also learning how to dance from one of the best dancers in the country was a real treat; it was amazing, the best time.
You have met many people from different walks of life – who is the most interesting person you’ve met?
I’d be pushed to say one. That’s the highlight of the job you know, you go to the most unusual parts of the world, sometimes you are in hostile environments and sometimes you’re surrounded by extreme privilege – and you just meet people that you just wouldn’t cross paths with ordinarily and I love that. I met Barack Obama when he came over here, that was pretty cool. I have interviewed Theresa May, and lots of politicians around the world. I’m very, very fortunate in that sense. There is never a dull moment.
What else will you be working on before the tour starts?
It’s non-stop. I’m doing Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star at the minute which is a make-up show, and then when I finish
that I’m going off to do a documentary on spy cameras, and then I’m going to a few places where we will be looking at new drug routes. After that I go to USA to spend some time with women serving life in prison, then in January and February I will be doing the Strictly tour, which I wrap on the 9th and then on the 10th I start my book tour in Glasgow, which is very exciting.

We could host Christmas this year
Real meaning: Oh no the words are out! Why on earth did I say that? You somehow find yourself casually offering to host Christmas dinner this year, during a barbecue in August, after you’ve had a few Proseccos in the sun. There’s a collective sigh of relief as everyone else realises they’ve dodged this year’s bullet. Damn those summer nights!
Don’t worry about my present
Real meaning: You need to put some serious effort in; there better not be any generic gift packs with excessive amounts of runny body lotion. I’m not twelve years old and I do not want a Britney Spears perfume and a selection box. A Jo Malone lime, basil and mandarin scented deluxe candle and a box of Hotel Chocolat Salted Caramel Hamper Collection if you’re asking, thanks very much. I need some luxury in my life, there’s no need to overly complicate things now is there?
I love a traditional Christmas dinner
Real meaning: Don’t get any fancy foodie ideas about me ditching the brussel sprouts for cauliflower sformato with crispy kale and pine nuts, it ain’t happening. If I have to do this then you will eat what you’re given. If you want any baked crab Rangoon amuse bouche, lobster lollipop hors d’oeuvre, spiced stolen plaits, chestnut truffles, Christmas gin with Clementine and ginger, or palate cleansing cranberry sorbets then you have come to the wrong house. It’s a strict Baileys and turkey kind of establishment with normal, run-of-the-mill trimmings. Nothing to see here.
I’ve adopted a donkey and sent a collective social media Christmas card Real meaning: I haven’t actually adopted a donkey, I’m just saying that because this
30
The real meaning of
CHRISTMAS What we say during the festive season and what we really mean BY CLARE BOWIE
is all getting out of hand and anyway, who can be bothered sending cards anymore. Christmas cards are nice but at 70p a pop, for a stamp, I’m not sure if I can commit to sending cards to people on my list that I haven’t seen for the last 15 years. I mean,
is my old next door neighbour from 2011 really going to be upset about this?
What’s that? You want a Christmas Eve box? Real meaning: I am not getting sucked
THE MOST COMMON THINGS SAID AT A CHRISTMAS GET TOGETHER I’ve kept the receipt for your present. Don’t you dare ask for it.
into this marketing trap sunshine. You really should be a little more commercially savvy, now that you’ve turned six. We’ve been through this before, you are not getting a £50 Smiggles advent calendar on 1st December and you are not getting a box of pyjamas and a selection of books and movies just because it’s Christmas Eve. Anyway, I have no time to watch movies on Christmas Eve because I foolishly agreed to feed the 5,000 tomorrow! *Weeps festively and throws the elf off the shelf*
You’re sooo well prepared
Real meaning: You are ridiculously over prepared and you probably should talk to someone about your ‘unstoppable need for control’ issues. We all know that ‘well prepared’ person who has bought and wrapped all their presents by June, had the house freshly decorated because it’s Christmas, chosen a new garden theme, and cooked the turkey on Christmas Eve. And not cooked in a Scandinavian, ‘let’s celebrate on Christmas Eve kind of way,’ more so in a ‘let’s just reheat the whole
thing; turkey, gravy and potatoes’ on Christmas day kind of way.
You shouldn’t have
Real meaning: No really, you shouldn’t have. When a guest turns up, hugs you and excitedly gives you one of the following gifts because they know exactly what you love: ■ Red wine (you only drink white) ■ A silver bangle (you only wear gold) ■ A book you recommended to them after you’d read it ■ A hamper full of speciality tea (you only drink coffee) ■ A voucher for a steak house (you’re a vegetarian) You’ve never felt so loved.
Loved your Facebook post
Real meaning: I hated your ‘impromptu’ picture; you are clearly just showing off, in a, ‘look at all our presents lined up in our beautiful instagrammable house,’ kind of way. When you said: “Aww, look at their wee faces,” what you really meant was: “I wish I could see your wee face when you saw how rich I am, haha!” In saying that, Facebookstalking and complaining about it, is your favourite hobby and she is your best friend after all.
The Christmas market was totally chocca last week. I have absolutely nothing in common with you. I love the green triangles. Step away from my Quality Street. Isn’t this lovely? This is all a bit awkward and I’ve run out of things to say. So what do you think of Brexit? That will keep you talking for a while and I can zone out. I’m just tidying up. I’ve escaped in here with a bottle for the foreseeable. This plastic packaging is so environmentally offensive. Aargh, I’m going to have to go to the tip and I can’t be bothered. What’s this we’re watching? I absolutely hate this, please turn it over immediately. My oven is too small for this turkey. I know, it’s going to be dry and rank. The more the merrier. Please never darken my door again. It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

FIVE MINUTES WITH
Fra Fee
F
ra Fee has had a meteoric rise to fame. The Tyrone actor best known for his role in Les Misérables. He made his Broadway debut last autumn in The Ferryman, and this month has joined the cast of the National Theatre’s return engagement of Brian Friel’s modern classic Translations. Emer Dooris caught up with Fra in-between performances.
Born in Dungannon, the bright lights of the West End and beyond must have seemed a million miles away, but did you always know that you wanted to be on the stage?
I come from a family of storytellers. My Da is and always has been a regular on the amateur dramatic circuit with local groups Bardic and Craic Theatre, so theatre was a part of my life growing up. From a young age I also discovered I had a singing voice so performing goes back as far as I can remember to be honest. A real formative experience that sticks out in my memory was going in to collect my sister Claire from rehearsals for Blood Brothers – she was playing Mickey – at St Patrick’s Girls Academy. I was about six or seven and my Ma had asked me to run in and let her know we were there to take her home, and I witnessed the girls rehearse the final scene (Tell me it’s Not True) and I was completely captivated. I subsequently went to every single performance of the show. I’m pretty sure I wanted to be an actor from then.
What attracted to you to play the role of Owen in Translations?
Well this was a no-brainier really. I think Brian Friel is our nation’s best playwright. He encapsulates the crisis of identity amongst us Irish folk so well. I didn’t study Translations at school, like so many others, but I did know the play exceptionally well. My Da played Hugh in a local production in Coalisland and being obsessed with theatre as I was then, I wanted to be involved in whatever way I could. Subsequently
32
I was the prompter backstage for each performance... I came in handy! And I love Owen. I go into the play every night with the conviction that what I’m doing (translating/Anglicising Gaelic place names) is the right thing to do in order to progress and unify opposing cultures. Of course, these actions turn out to have devastating consequences which he then has to deal with, and he learns from his mistakes but at the beginning of the play he sees himself as a product of the future and a survivor.
I have seen you perform in small spaces such as the Naughton Studio in the Lyric Theatre Belfast and also in larger venues on the West End, which do you prefer? Funnily enough I’m coming back to the Naughton on November 22nd to perform a show I did in London and at Broadway’s 54 Below Cabaret venue. It’s called Seisún and its glorious mix of Musical Theatre and folk and story-telling. I can’t wait to perform it in Belfast. I love the Naughton as well. It’s a gorgeous, unfortunately under-used space in the Lyric. I don’t have a particular preference between large and small houses to be honest. Something very special and beautiful can be shared in small spaces like the Naughton or Menier Chocolate Factory in London where I played Candide a few
years ago. And when it’s only witnessed by a hundred or so people it feels like a secret shared... then again, it’s also pretty fun playing the Royal Albert Hall!
With plays like Ferryman and TV shows such as Derry Girls as well as exporting Game of Thrones, the Northern Irish theatre and film scene is growing and seems to be making a splash globally despite arts cuts. Why do you think the world currently has such an interest in NI? There are obviously financial benefits from shooting in Northern Ireland at the moment but there is a cultural thing happening as well. It’s no accident for example that Translations is been revived at the National this year when the issue of border-control is so very much in our psyche. We come from an intriguing place – it’s messy, funny, often confusing but rich with culture and history – who wouldn’t want to tell stories and hear stories about us?
If you could introduce one law in Northern Ireland what would it be?
Up until recently I would’ve said marriage equality and abortion rights but thankfully that’s just changed. So, I’d probably insist upon teaching about LGBT families and equality in schools.

nterprising local nurse Helena Phelan founded Warbling Wheezers in 2014; a Derry/ Londonderry-based choir aimed at improving the lives of adults who suffer with breathing difficulties. Since then, the group has gone from strength to strength with its members reporting life-changing benefits. “About seven years ago I had realised singing was very good for both respiratory health and mental wellbeing,” Helena begins. “I got funding from the British Lung Foundation to do a ten-week pilot singing programme – it was amazing and we even sang at an Irish Thoracic Society function.” After ten weeks the pilot came to an end, but having seeing first-hand the benefits of the programme, Helena, a Respiratory Nurse Specialist for the Western Trust, was determined to keep it going. “As we didn’t have funding, I began searching for pianist and a choir mistress and so on, to get the group set up,” she says. “We now have 20-25 regular members, some are from the original group and others who have joined since.” Warbling Wheezers’ members suffer from a range of conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, asthma,

Catriona Doherty catches up with the Derry choir who are hitting the high notes and headlines lung cancer, emphysema, sarcoidis or chronic cough. Weekly sessions consist of relaxation, posture, breathing and vocal exercises followed by singing. “The aim of the choir is to positively improve the mental health and emotional wellbeing of patients with long terms lung conditions,” Helena says. “There are so many benefits of this group; it teaches breathing control and chest clearance, it’s good for managing chest infections, improving mental wellbeing, and it provides a sense of belonging by being part of a group where everyone has the same issues as you. Because all members of the group have similar problems, they understand what it’s like to cough all the
time, carry oxygen, or carry an inhaler for example. “Above all, it’s about having good craic – it’s brilliant craic!” This summer the community choir caught the attention of the Spirit of Northern Ireland awards judges, and Helena was announced as the overall winner of the prestigious Spirit of Health accolade. “It was surreal, unbelievable… I never imagined we would win.” Helena says. “The Warbling Wheezers were delighted!” Helena goes on to say new group members are always welcome, “especially men. Men are notoriously bad joiners of groups and at present we only have one
man. Absolutely no prior singing experience is required. You don’t have to be able to sing a melody or tune, it’s all about taking part and doing breathing exercises. It’s not about sound, but we do sound amazing,” she laughs. Currently the only male member of Warbling Wheezers, Philip Lloyd, says the group gave him “a new life” after he moved to Derry from Manchester.
µµIt’s not about sound, but we do sound amazing∑∑ “About six years I went to COPD seminar which ran over six weeks. On the last week, someone came in and said: ‘put your hand up if you’d like to join a choir’. I put my hand up, and that’s how joining the group came about. “It got me out of my shell. I had moved
to a new country and I thought, ‘I’ve got to get out and meet people’. Warbling Wheezers brought me out of my comfort zone and once I was established in group it felt like I had a new life. The choir gave me confidence and I have gone on to do other things. I’m in the British Heart Foundation now and I’m chairman, we meet monthly to help people understand how to manage the condition.” Prior to joining the choir, Philip had no singing experience and through it he discovered a new talent and passion. “I just love to sing, and being part of this group is a bonus!” For choir member Liz Mc Gilloway, who is from Craigavon, the benefits of joining Warbling Wheezers are numerous. “I have very bad asthma and it has helped with breathing. Before we start singing Helena does breathing exercises with us. “I have met a lot of people through it. I enjoy the singing and meeting everyone; we have a few new members and it’s always nice to see the same people each week.” Through the choir, Liz learned she was capable of much more than she had imagined despite suffering from asthma. “You can still do things you never thought
you could. We have joined the local choir Allegri and took part in Every Voice Fringe Festival; it’s a thing we never thought we could do. Last week we sang at the Guildhall in Derry, we are performing in Strabane on Friday, and we have Christmas functions coming up too,” she says. Liz’s confidence has come a long way since her childhood days when she signed up to singing lessons with James McCafferty which came to an abrupt quick end as she was too self-conscious to sing on stage. And now thanks to the Warbling Wheezers, Liz and the other group members are singing on stages across Northern Ireland. For more details, see: www.facebook.comThewarblingwheezers
The Warbling Wheezers choir meet at the Millennium Forum, Derry/Londonderry every second Tuesday night at 7.30pm. etting up in the dark… driving home from work in the dark… and getting a soaking every time you set foot outside the house. With winter well and truly here and the shortest day looming, many of us feel our mood start to dip at the thought of another rainy commute or freezing evening. But how normal are the winter blues? And at what point should you seek help if you’re struggling to lift your mood? Most of us have heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D), defined by the NHS as a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern, most often during the winter months. But mental health professionals tend to regard it as falling beneath the umbrella of recurrent depressive disorders, rather than a separate condition. Dr David Bell, specialist registrar in general adult psychiatry and medical psychotherapy at the Belfast HSC Trust, and member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, explains: “S.A.D is a term that is common in popular culture, but psychiatrists tend to think of it as part of a depressive condition – rather than a diagnosis in its own right. “It’s very common for us all to face challenges with our mental health during the winter months – but if this becomes a more persistent low mood and lack of enjoyment in normal pleasures then at that point it’s worth speaking to your GP.” Pat Lynch, head of education at depression charity Aware NI, agrees. “We sometimes refer to the ‘winter blues’ or ‘winter depression’,” he says. “Most of us feel

rundown at some point during the winter months and there are plenty of lifestyle changes you can make to give yourself a boost. “But if you’ve made these changes and your low mood persists for more than two weeks, at that point we’d advise speaking to a doctor.” So what are the lifestyle changes you can make to bring back the spring in your step?
Get outdoors
It may seem counterintuitive when the very
thing that’s bringing your mood down is the weather, but experts agree that getting outside and exercising in the fresh air can do you a power of good. Sunlight triggers the production of feel-good chemicals serotonin and melatonin – not to mention Vitamin D which can help ward off colds. “Daylight has a direct effect on the brain, so when the days are short it’s about making the most it,” explains Pat. “It’s especially important to take advantage of the good days; so when the sun does shine, get out in the garden, head to the beach or
FIVE WINTER ACTIVITIES TO ENJOY:
• Dig out your thickest coat and bobble hat and go for a bracing walk at your nearest beach or wood. • Draw the curtains, make a mug of hot chocolate and curl up with that novel you’ve been meaning to read all year. • Go through your favourite photos of the year and print them off for a scrap book, or use one of the many online photobook tools. They make brilliant Christmas presents too. • Winter is a great time to take stock in the garden. Cut shrubs back, mulch growing beds, weed and generally prepare for the coming year. • Take on a decorating project. Pimp an old Ikea Billy bookcase, give an unloved room a lick of paint, or head to antiques shops for a spot of bargain hunting.
go for a woodland walk. “Even when it’s raining you can still go outside as long as you dress for the weather. Remember the old saying ‘it’s not bad weather – just bad clothing’.” Dog owners typically reap the mental health benefits of pet ownership during the winter months because they are drawn outside whatever the weather. “I tend to notice people out walking more during the winter, probably because I admire them,” laughs Dr Bell. “If you’ve got a dog you really do have to take it for a walk, rain or shine. Dog walking can be quite sociable too; you often have regular routes and times so you know other dog walkers to say ‘hello’ to. “As human creatures we respond to daylight. Taking a brief walk during daylight hours can do wonders to regulate our natural rhythms.”
Don’t sleep in
The dark mornings may seem like the perfect excuse to hit the snooze button or enjoy a weekend lie-in, but it’s better for your body clock if you stick to a normal routine.
“We tell people with depression to concentrate on putting their first foot on the floor,” says Pat. “Get up, open the curtains, take a shower and get dressed. It can be the hardest thing to do when you’re feeling low. “After the clocks go back it can be tough getting up in the dark. But we know it’s going to be light from around 8am to 4pm so it’s about making the most of that time. If you’re struggling to get up then go to bed earlier instead. “Making the most of the available daylight is a much cheaper and easier way to boost your mood than buying light boxes that simulate it.” Our sleep, exercise and diet routines can all change in the winter, especially around Christmas time. It’s important to realise that there’s a difference between normal reactions to life’s ups and downs, and clinical depression. “Remember that Christmas isn’t a happy time for everybody,” says Dr Bell. “If you’ve suffered a bereavement, for example, it can be incredibly difficult. “It’s important to understand that it’s okay to feel down due to life events; that’s part of the human experience. Try to stick with the daily routines that you follow during your happier times.”
Socialise
It can be tempting to cancel that coffee date or night out when it’s cold outside, but being flakey with your mates will do you more harm than good. “Social contact is one of the best ways to give yourself a natural boost,” says Dr Bell. “Nurture your existing friendships and catch up with family. “Winter is also a great time to start doing something new, like a class, course or volunteering, and make new friends.” Volunteering organisations like homeless charities, animal shelters and soup kitchens always need extra support during the winter months.
Colleges and evening classes tend to start a new term in the new year so it’s a great time to sign up for a course or start a new hobby. Pick something artistic or creative; something you’ll really enjoy and look forward to. There are plenty of grassroots sports teams and leagues running throughout the winter too. “Contact with other people is really important,” agrees Pat. “Again this is where going outdoors can be of benefit; you’re more likely to bump into people to chat to at your local park or garden centre.”
Be proactive
We all feel better when we’re being productive, so set goals for the day and congratulate yourself when you stick to them. “It can be tough at this time of year because TV scheduling is good – there’s Christmas movies, big shows like Strictly and X-Factor; there’s always something on the box if you want to stay indoors,” says Dr Bell. “You can also find yourself sitting on the sofa, scrolling on your phone. But if you’re feeling low, social media can even have a detrimental effect. “Try to go easy on screen time. It’s much better to go out, meet up with other people or engage with nature instead.” There are plenty of ways to reach out and seek help if you’re feeling low, from mental health support groups to talking therapies and volunteering projects. “You could do some conservation or outreach volunteering, which will get you outdoors at the same time.” advises Pat. “Prevention is often the best cure.” Dr Bell adds: “We have no problem spending money on our appearance or fitness, such as gym memberships, but perhaps the money might be better spent on some talking therapy if you’re feeling low. Your mental health is just as important.”

P
arenting can be a minefield. For most people, the joy of bringing up a child is tinged with frustration and disappointment when things go wrong, which is often the case. The willingness to fling yourself into a row with your teenager or lose the ability to think straight in the middle of a toddler tantrum is all too familiar. So is it possible to approach parenting more mindfully and if so, what difference could it make? International barrister, mindfulness teacher and parent Gillian Higgins shares some tips and explains how mindfulness can help in turbulent times.
What is mindful parenting?
At its core, mindful parenting takes the principles of mindfulness and applies them to how you parent. The concept of mindfulness is about paying attention to moments of everyday life with curiosity and openness on purpose. It involves dropping into your present moment experience and being aware of what you’re doing, while you’re doing it, with a non-judgmental attitude. It sounds easy, but increasingly it’s hard to find time to pause and take stock – especially as a parent.
So how do you practise mindfulness?
Mindfulness is simple and can be practised anywhere. One way is to learn mindfulness meditation by using a point of focus, such as the passage of the breath. When your mind gets distracted and wanders off into thinking, worrying, or planning, simply notice where it has wandered to and gently guide it back to following the physical sensation of the in-breath and the out-breath. Do this every time the mind wanders – with kindness to yourself. In time, you start to recognise that thoughts are not facts and will come and go of their own accord, if you allow them to do so. Another way is to use ‘daily mindfulness practices’. These are instances during the day where you pause, breathe and bring moment-to-moment awareness to something as simple as the brewing of your tea or your arrival back home after the school run. By pausing and staying present in the moment, you might notice the aroma of your drink or the rare moments of silence, as you take in your experience fully.
What difference does it make?
Mindful parenting invites you to think about how to become more responsive and thoughtful in the way you parent. It encourages you to pause, and experience

his month I enjoyed a pampering session in the Spa Experience by Better, Belfast, which is located in the Olympia Leisure Centre, Boucher Road. Spa Experience have three luxurious treatment rooms and offer a full range of relaxation and beauty therapies using top of the range products from leading brands including ELEMIS and La Sultane De Saba. The venue’s Thermal Spa area features a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, sanarium, ice room, ice bucket shower and monsoon showers. I have to admit, the ice bucket shower was a little too adventurous for me, however one of the other spa users tried it much to the amusement of her friends who erupted into laughter as she let out a shriek. The heated tiled seats on the other hand were right up my street, and I absolutely loved relaxing on a warm lounger flicking through a magazine. Chilled cucumber water and a selection of fresh fruit were provided free of charge for guests. After that, it was time for my treatment. Spa Experience offer two prenatal spa treatments for expectant mothers; the Elmis Peaceful Pregnancy Massage and the La Sultane De Saba Sweetness In Bloom, and I was in for the latter. I was shown to a candlelit room by my friendly therapist Stephanie McCann, who explained what was involved in the treatment; a foot cleanse with black soap, followed by a back massage using rose scented Sultane De Saba Sweetness products, a facial, and to finish warm

The location
The Beaumont Hotel is extremely easy to locate and easy to get to. My husband and I flew from Belfast International to London Stansted Airport, got the Stansted Express train into the city, and from there hopped on the underground to Bond Street. The hotel was a five-minute walk from the station. Situated on a quiet square in the sophisticated neighbourhood of Mayfair, the listed 1920’s building is only a few minutes’ walk from shops and cafes on Duke Street, Mount Street and Bond Street, and Mayfair’s many art galleries and cafes. During our stay, we headed off exploring on foot and got the tube home when legs started to tire.
Movie set vibe
We dined in the hotel’s restaurant The Colony Grill on the first night of our stay. Making my way through American-style Magritte Bar to The Colony Grill Room, I felt as if I was walking through the set of a movie, or stepping back in time to the 1920s or 30s. Immaculately-dressed bar tenders were shaking silver cocktail canisters with a flourish at the marble bar overlooked by original posters of Charlie Chaplin, and a pianist played a sultry Jazz melody. A sommelier was on hand to make wine recommendations and the friendly,

Why you should book The Beaumont Hotel for your next London break BY CATRIONA DOHERTY professional restaurant staff couldn’t have been more attentive. The New York style grill menu featured mouth-watering choices and I opted for the colony hamburger with a side of spiced sweet potato with lime mayonnaise, and baked vanilla cheesecake for dessert. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and were served in generous portions, which I enjoyed amongst the hustle and bustle of this old word glamour style restaurant.

It’s a life experience
Christmas is on the horizon and I love to give ‘life experience’ presents to make memories with a loved one instead of buying them something; hotel stays, meal vouchers, or pampering sessions for example. A stay at The Beaumont is certainly a life experience worth adding to your Christmas wish-list. A break away to this upmarket hotel was a memorable experience for lots of reasons. Sightseeing IN THE CITY Taking a whistlestop top tour of London’s sights

aving a limited time to explore London, a hop-onhop-off bus tour was the best option for us when it came to seeing as much of the city as possible in a day. I booked with The Original Tour company because their Yellow Route option was just what I had in mind; it offered a frequent service (every 5-10 minutes), had a tour guide on board, and visited all of the top attractions such as Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and London Eye.

Buckingham Palace
We were content to walk around outside Buckingham Palace, snapping selfies outside the gates, but for those who want to get a closer look the palace is open on select dates for tours of The State Rooms. Tickets cost £85 and can be booked on: tickets.rct.uk. Tours usually last around two hours, including a glass of champagne and a 20% discount for the gift shop. To catch a Changing the Guard ceremony this time of year, visit at 11am on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Sunday.
The Imperial War Museum
The Imperial War Museum (IWM) showcases experiences of modern conflict. Some of the exhibits are light-hearted, such as the enlisting posters - where visitors are invited to use tools to measure their height or weight, with a sign stating ‘Are you thin enough?’ under a ‘King & country need you – A call to arms’ notice. Other exhibits are thought-provoking and harrowing as you begin to imagine what life would have been like for the soldiers who were trying to survive in the horrendous living conditions of the trenches, and their loved ones awaiting their return at home. Admission is free.
Hard Rock Cafe
Hard Rock Cafe
We took a pit stop at Piccadilly Circus and spotted Hard Rock Cafe amongst the neon signs and huge video displays, and went in for lunch. As opposed to people watching, it was the walls that caught my eye as they were covered in all sorts of memorabilia from decades of music history. The meal I ordered (the Original Legendary Burger and fries) was delicious and surpassed expectations.
Chinatown
After Piccadilly Circus we went to Leicester Square and on to Chinatown. The area boasts over 70 authentic East Asian restaurants, bars and cafes, and judging by the lengthy queues outside many eateries, the food must be good. Simply walking around Chinatown taking in the sights and smells was an experience in itself, and I can imagine the Chinese New Year festivities in late January and mid-February 2020 will be pretty spectacular – said to be the biggest Chinese New Year celebration in the world outside of Asia.

fter a long journey down to Offaly from Belfast on a monsoon-like Friday afternoon, we reached the impressive front entrance of the Bridge House Hotel where a warm welcome awaited. Following a brief wait to check it, during which I enjoyed a cup of coffee and homemade banoffee tart, my friend and I were shown to our room. The newly-refurbished room was well presented, spacious, and we were treated to a welcome plate of cakes and biscuits. After getting changed we made our way to the Char Bistro for a delightful meal. The menu featured a great choice of appetisers and main courses, with something to suit all tastes. The food was very impressive and the staff were attentive and knowledgeable. After dinner we went to the Library Bar - a beautiful little quiet nook off reception. The General Manager Mario took us to the Charleville Suite where Aslan were performing live in concert. They rocked the night away with a selection of songs from their six albums including hit Crazy World. After a comfortably night’s sleep, the next morning we enjoyed a delicious buffet breakfast where the staff were as conscientious as ever. Following a quiet morning spent watching the rugby and some shopping, we met in the Library Bar for Afternoon Tea. There was a vast choice of sandwiches and cakes – far more than two people could ever eat, but it was an absolute delight to have experienced it.

Next on the itinerary, we headed off to the Tullamore Dew Distillery where we learned about the history of the establishment and how different blends of whiskey are made. After the show around led by our excellent guide Tony, we were invited to taste three different whiskeys - all very different in their own right and available to buy in the gift shop on site. That night we dined in another of Bridge House Hotel’s restaurants – the Balcone Italiano. The food was to die for and we didn’t even considering ordering dessert as the previous courses were so big. The wine list was extensive and sure to impress any connoisseur. After dinner we headed down to the in-house Char Bistro Bar, where we
danced and sang the night away to the music of a local band, followed by a DJ who played into the small hours of the morning. Sunday was spent relaxing in the spa before check out. I was booked in for the Signature Package Spa treatment which began with a relaxing dip in the outdoor Hydropool, where a combination of warm water and pulsating jets ease out stress and tension in your body. My therapist Louise talked me through the different treatments available; Cellutox to detoxify, Musclease to ease aches and pains, and De-Stress for deep relaxation. I opted for the Musclease. My pampering journey was completed with a session in the Alpha Lounger; a multisensory bed where fine vibrations massage the body. Lights, sounds and gentle warmth are incorporated to soothe any physical and emotional tension. It was with a heavy heart that we had to pack up and leave for the journey home, but with a vow to return in the near future. I highly recommend the Bridge House Hotel, whether it be for a girlie weekend away or a family break, the venue has something to suit everyone.

Cocktail recommendation by Rebecca Robb: FRATELLI SBAGLIATO NEGRONI
ecember in Italy is a month-long emporium of Christmas festivities. The Italians celebrate Christmas like they do with all other parties of the year, with great gusto! Throughout all the cities in Italy you will find bustling Christmas markets bursting with festive treats, roast chestnuts, hot spiced wine or “vin brule” and rich luxurious Italian hot chocolate. The crisp winter air is pierced with the most heavenly smells of spices and coco, intoxicating the locals as they meander about wrapped up in cosy woollies. There are many spectacular festivals to visit at this time of “Natale”. “Florence Noel” is a magical family experience with the streets festooned with nativity villages, chocolate stands and live music. “Sagra Del Cinghiale” in Tuscany celebrates the enigma of the wild boar, with tasting of this delightful delicacy on offer along with the fine wines of Chianti. The “Sant” Ambrogio Festival of fashionable Milan holds a market that sells the crème of artisanal gifts. Truly I feel I may escape to Italia this time of year in the future! My cocktail of choice this month is our Fratelli Sbagliato Negroni. Made with the new innovative “Fiero Martini” it is the perfect winter tipple. When Alessandro Martini and Luigi Rossi took over a distillery in the tiny village of Pessione in Turin wonderful things began to happen! With the devoted help of master blender Beppe Musso and master herbalist Ivano Tonutti, these gents created the Martini brand so well known around the globe. The new Fiero Martini is a sleek stylish Martini boasting bittersweet orange on the palate, bolstered with a secret blend of aromatic fruit, barks and exotic spices. Only the premium wines of Trebbiano and the lesser known Cataratto of Sicily are used to produce this citrus beauty. Vermouths tend to lend themselves excellently to salty food, so I have chosen Chef’s Seafood Rigatoni, a new addition to our Winter menu, to accompany this stylish cocktail. I hope you enjoy! SEAFOOD RIGATONI Ingredients: 500g rigatoni pasta 100g gorgonzola cheese 250mls single cream 3 garlic cloves 250g mixed seafood - we use pale smoked haddock, coley, pink prawns, but you can use any combination you please. 25g lightly toasted pine nuts 2 lightly fried leeks 50g grated pecorino cheese Handful of chopped flat leaf parsley
6. Once pasta is cooked, add to the cream sauce along with crumbled Gorgonzola, leeks and pecorino cheese and stir to mix. 7. Season with black pepper and salt if required, (it may not be needed due to the fish and cheese salt content). 8. Place in serving dishes and garnish with pine nuts and chopped flat leaf parsley.
FRATELLI SBAGLIATO NEGRONI Ingredients: 35mls Malfy Blood orange gin 35mls Fiero Martini Method 1. Gently bring the cream to boil with 10mls Campari Splash of Prosecco Orsolo the peeled garlic cloves 2. Reduce heat and leave to simmer to infuse garlic for 20 minutes. 3. Remove from heat. 4. Put pasta on to boil until al dente in salted water. 5. Put cream back on stove on a medium heat 10 minutes before the pasta is ready and add fish to gently cook.

Method 1. Pour the Malfy gin, Martini and Campari over ice in a whiskey tumbler. 2. Stir to mix. 3. Garnish with a blood orange wedge. 4. Fizz with Prosecco.

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I absolutely love it! What’s not to love about Christmas? The twinkly lights, cosy nights by the fire with the Christmas tree and candles lit, parties, meeting up with family and friends, presents, of course, and it is the ultimate excuse to indulge ourselves in some fabulous food and drink. I enjoy gathering up some lovely wines to enjoy over the festive period and as our family is more than partial to a drop of fizz, I make sure I have a good supply. I have three big hitters in the fizz department for you to try this festive season. Prosecco first, always a crowd pleaser and seemingly everyone’s favourite at the moment, but one of my personal favourites is Valdo Millesimato Prosecco DOC, a delicious sparkler made from 100% Glera grapes from Treviso in Italy. It is a lovely straw yellow colour with an enticing fruity aroma, and hints of Golden Delicious apples. It’s classed as Extra Dry and has a clean-cut palate with aromatic flavours. Check out the full Valdo range online or treat yourself to a Prosecco Flight in the Merchant Hotel, Belfast. Now time for some Champagne which is traditionally made with three grape varieties; Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Champagne Deutz Brut Classic is indeed a classic Champagne. It has a wonderful golden colour and a lovely fine mousse, or bubbles. On the nose you get floral and fruity notes followed by aromas of marzipan of toast. Deutz Brut Classic is the perfect aperitif and will kick off your Christmas meal with style. It is also the perfect accompaniment to fish dishes, poultry and white meats so can carry you through your smoked salmon or prawn starter with ease. Now for a name most of us have heard of – Taittinger, or to be precise, Taittinger Brut Reserve. This is a blend of 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier using wines from 35 different vineyards. The high proportion of Chardonnay is what produces this delicately balanced champagne known all over the world for consistent excellence. It is golden yellow in colour with fine and delicate bubbles and a light mousse. On the note you get aromas of peaches, white flowers and that lovely brioche toastiness. This is a Champagne for all occasions and perfect to celebrate the festive season. Look out for the beautiful gift box in a pearly metallic sheen containing a bottle of Taittinger Brut Reserve and two champagne flutes, which make the perfect present to impress absolutely anyone – available from The Vineyard, Belfast, The Sipster, Jordanstown and The Wine Company, Belfast. So, Happy Christmas everyone. Pop a cork and enjoy! Cheers!

HOW TO GET THERE
From Dublin, Aer Lingus flies to Fiumicino daily and Ryanair flies to Ciampino daily. Both airports are served by private buses that go direct to Rome Termini station. The journey takes 45 minutes and costs €7. Fuimicino has a direct train link into the city.
WHERE TO STAY
Many hotels are old historic buildings with high ceilings and narrow corridors. I decided to stay in the area around Rome Termini train station as it is useful for travelling back to the airport or for exploring outside Rome. I stayed in the four-star Bettoja Massimo d’Azeglio. Double rooms cost from €75 per night.
When in Rome… How to make the most out of your Italian break
Y
BY RITA DOHERTY
ou could easily spend an extended period in Rome, it seems as if there are churches, museums, sculptures and sights around every corner. I would recommend staying a minimum of two days, preferably more. The city is best explored on foot (with comfortable shoes of course) as all of the main attractions are within walking distance of the centre. Be sure to pencil the following sights into your itinerary:
The Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain area was the source of water for ancient Rome. In 1762 Pope Clemens X111 completed the building of the present fountain which was commissioned by his predecessor. Water pours from various fountains within its design. Don’t be tempted to take a dip to cool down or you will be arrested. It is customary to throw a coin over your right shoulder into the water which is later collected for charity estimated at €3,000 a day.
The Trevi Fountain
The Colosseum
The Colosseum was built between 72 and 80AD. It is the biggest amphitheatre in the world. Back in the day, more than 50,000 spectators came here to watch sporting events and games such as gladiator combat. Today only one third of the original building remains in this unmissable tourist attraction. Tours ran every half hour in October and can be booked online or outside the colosseum. Entry tickets can be purchased on arrival for €12, although queuing is required. You can buy Skip the Line tickets online for £31.86 which cover priority entrance to The Colosseum, arena floor access, and admission to the nearby Roman Forum.
The Roman Forum
The Forum consisted of the political administrative and religious centre of ancient Rome. It went into disrepair after the fall of the Roman Empire. The site was excavated from 1803 onwards unearthing older buildings. The Forum is well worth a visit to view the ancient ruins which date back to more than 2,000 years ago, some of which are fairly well preserved.
The Pantheon
The oldest building in Rome, The Pantheon was a Roman temple which became a church in the 7th century. The structure is
a large rounded room covered by the dome. The top of the dome was left uncovered to allow light into the building. It’s said to be the city’s best-preserved building because it has been in continuous use, and masses and weddings still take place there today. Various pieces from Rome’s elite artists and architects can be seen inside.
The Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps extend from the Spanish Square to the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. With its irregular butterfly design the 138 steps are a well-known meeting place, and feature a mix of curves, straight flights, vistas and terraces. A beautiful view of the sunset can be seen from the top of the steps, outside the church door.
The Vatican City
The Vatican City is within walking distance from the centre (about 6km) but it’s more advisable to take the Metro red line to Ottaviano or Cipro. One can turn up and queue to get in (bring your passport) or book a ‘skip the line’ ticket for €26 or a tour for €44. A three-hour tour takes you through the Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica. St Peter’s is free to visit so you can go alone, but waiting in the queue makes this a less attractive option. Tickets for a self-guided tour with an audio guide cost €20. St Peter’s is home to some impressive masterpieces such as Michaelangelo’s Pieta and Bernini’s Chair of St. Peter. There is the option of climbing 551 steps to the dome for an extra fee where one has a 360° view of Rome. There is also a lift part of the way that you can avail of for an additional fee. The Vatican Christian art museums display immense collections of art, tapestries and renowned sculptures collected by popes over the centuries.

ounty Down couple Ciara Monaghan and Stephen Hynes met in New York through a mutual friend Niamh, when they were living in the Big Apple. “We got on so well, had loads in common and spent every date laughing,” Ciara recalls. Four years after they first met Stephen organised a trip to The Plaza and pulled off a surprise proposal. The couple set the date for 14th September 2019 at Bellingham Castle. Primrose Lane Bakery made the wedding cake and the bride’s “very talented mother” Anne Marie Monaghan did the flowers. Victoria from Ebony Letterpress designed gold foil letterpress invitations. “They were simple, elegant and classy, and really set the tone for the day,” Ciara says. “Photographer Ciaran O’Neill put us all at ease and the photos have turned out amazing. “Stephen’s Cousin Eadaoin Devlin sang in the chapel together with my brother’s girlfriend Niamh Nic Uileagoid playing the harp, Stephen’s brother Christopher playing the organ, and Donna Magee playing the piano. Conor Smith did an acoustic session during the drinks reception. The band was FreeFall and DJ was Mini Macs Roadshow – the dancefloor was full all night, it never stopped!” The bride looked sensational in an Enzoani fit and flare gown from Petticoat Lane, accessorised with Jimmy Choos, a diamond bracelet which was a gift from her mother, and diamond earrings given to her by Stephen. “I felt a million dollars on the morning of the wedding, everything was perfect,” Ciara says. The groom’s favourite memory of his wedding day was: “seeing Ciara walk up the aisle, she was absolutely beautiful and had the biggest smile on her face”. Ciara’s was: “The drive from the chapel to Bellingham – we had half an hour just the two of us, drinking champagne, chatting and laughing.” The newlyweds enjoyed the “trip of a lifetime” honeymoon to Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the Maldives, the highlight of which was getting upgraded to an “out of this world” suite in The Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi.

All I want for Christmas is… food Forest Feast launches new range of festive fruit and nut mixes that ‘yule’ love

W
hen you think of Christmas, there are a few things that spring to mind; Santa’s cookies and milk, or Grandma’s homemade Christmas pudding and brandy sauce. Food, food and more food – it’s often the most quoted favourite thing about this time of year and it’s easy to see why chestnuts roasting on an open fire, corn for popping, candy canes and silver lanes aglow – even thinking of the cosy time of year can make your mouth water. From impromptu family get togethers and nights in with friends around the fire, to office Christmas dos and New Year’s Eve parties, it really is the most wonderful time of year for enjoying good food and tasty treats with family and friends. As one of the most indulgent times of the year, it comes as no surprise that people want to bring something different to the table, with 55%* of shoppers saying they are on the hunt for quirky new snacks and dishes to help to impress guests and to tease tastebuds at annual festive gatherings. Recognising that shoppers are searching for ‘snack-spiration’ during the festive season, local healthy snack brand, Forest Feast, has crafted two new delicious nut mixes inspired by the flavours of Christmas. The products include a Festive Stuffing Mix and a Gingerbread Latte Fruit and Nut Mix and will hit the shelves of stores across Northern Ireland from mid-November. Bronagh Clarke, Marketing Director at Forest Feast, said: “At Forest Feast we love Christmas and the freedom it allows us to try new flavour combinations. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, and we are delighted to welcome these two mixes to our existing Christmas range with plenty of flavours to suit every palate.∑∑ Christmas range with plenty of flavours to suit every palate.” The newest arrivals to the limited-edition Christmas range are inspired by traditional festive flavours: • The Festive Stuffing Mix is perfect for those after the traditional taste of Christmas with a slight twist - made of a mixture of roasted and salted peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans and macadamia nuts with Christmas stuffing coated almonds and basil and balsamic cashews. • Coffee lovers should try the Gingerbread Latte Fruit & Nut Mix – made of a mix gingerbread latte white chocolate hazelnuts, dried cranberries, vanilla peanuts and cacao & vanilla cashews with white chocolate cranberries and toasted pecans. The two new products join Forest Feast’s already well-established line up of festive
favourites which includes everything from natural fruit and nut mixes and nuts in shells to other sweet and savoury snacking combinations such as Luxury Hickory Smoke Mix and Sweet and Spicy Caramelised Nut Mix. Bronagh continued: “We love to experiment with flavours that we know our customers will adore and we always enjoy finding ways to incorporate popular trends into our mixes. For example, Gingerbread Lattes are one of the top selling Christmas coffees**, so we wanted to see if we could take inspiration from this and bring this flavour profile to life in our new nut mix. “Just as we love to get creative, we encourage our fans to get inventive with dishes as well. Try sprinkling the Gingerbread Latte mix on top of a festive favourite for a bit of extra magic or incorporate the Festive Stuffing mix into your actual stuffing – you’ll not be disappointed! “Whether you’re the Christmas day swimmer who needs snacks to fuel them throughout the day, the usual suspect to fall asleep on the sofa, or the post-dinner overindulger on cheese and nuts, Forest Feast’s Christmas range has something to cater to every need. We’re hoping our mixes will be the perfect centrepiece this Christmas.” This innovative range is hand-crafted at Forest Feast’s headquarters in Portadown where products are uniquely roasted by air and flavoured in-house, resulting in the most authentic tastes and alternative healthy snacks. A guilt-free CHRISTMAS CAKE This month Sal Hanvey shares her recipe for Orange drizzle cake with coconut and cardamon cream
I
love this time of year; indulging in things I wouldn’t usually eat, being more sociable, putting up decorations, and most importantly for me – spending time with the ones I love and taking a welldeserved break. Baking a Christmas cake is a tradition in many households and making it months in advance is a common trend. I love this recipe for Orange drizzle cake as it allows you to have some of the tastes that are

associated with Christmas without being overly traditional. This cake is gluten-, yeast- and wheatfree, and it can also be dairy- and sugarfree. Most Christmas cakes are laden with sugar, and some contain wheat, gluten and alcohol. My recipe is a great alternative for those who want something a bit different, and it can be made on Christmas Eve if you haven’t had time to prepare months in advance. Merry Christmas everyone!

The Thompsons’ state-of-the-art blending and packing facility in Belfast has been quietly producing a special limited edition Punjana pack with a festive flourish that is due to hit the shelves of supermarket outlets across the province before the end of November. “The launch of our limited edition Punjana packs coincides with a time of year associated with a drop in temperatures and a subsequent rise in festive cheer as people come together to spend time with their families over the Christmas holidays. It is a fortunate coincidence that our particular ‘Punjana red’ ties in so nicely with Santa’s festive suit, and we hope our new designs put a smile on the face of our customers at this time of year,” said Jamie Thompson. The introduction of these exciting new packs will coincide with ‘Thompson’s 12 Days of

Christmas’, their annual festive social media campaign which will see twelve daily giveaways celebrating fantastic locally produced products, as well as some other exciting aspirational brands.

As fourth generation Thompsons, they share a rare passion for quality and take great pleasure in selecting teas from only the very finest gardens in Assam, Kenya and beyond. These tea leaves are highly prized and command a greater price. These are the leaves which find their way into the Thompson’s blends. Even today, as has been the way for the last 120 years, it is only ever a member of the Thompson family who is entrusted with tasting and approving each and every blend, their assurance that the tea inside will be the same award-winning Punjana taste and flavour that Northern Ireland tea lovers have been enjoying since 1896. Joint Managing Director, Ross Thompson, comments: ‘For generations of Thompsons, tea has been our obsession. We care about every single pack of tea that we produce and select teas only from growers who
The Thompson’s range of award-winning black teas share our passion for making something special. These teas are grown in exotic climates, far from home, but our frequent visits to tea gardens in Kenya and Assam have helped us forge trusting relationships with growers, based on our mutual love of great tea’. Their considerable success in the prestigious Great Taste Awards is undoubtedly due to their obsessive love of quality and the fact that they personally taste-test each and every blend they produce. It takes a certain amount of courage to choose what is best over what is most profitable, but the Thompsons stay focused on sourcing only the highest quality tea leaves, and simply can’t be persuaded to do it any other way.

hristmas is nearly here and if you haven’t already started shopping for gifts you’ll start to do so very soon. Recent studies have shown that in the UK the average person spends £299 on gifts at Christmas. We refer to it as ‘the season of giving’ because we like to shower gifts on those closest to us, but is there a better way to give? Could we give something back as we give to our friends and loved ones this Christmas? You may not be aware of it but there is power in your purse. What you choose to buy has a huge impact on the planet. So how can we make positive purchases? Here’s my roundup of some amazing local companies doing great things in and through their products. When buying gifts for the women in your life, I recommend the coffee scrub from Mrs Rganics (£13.50), it is made from repurposed coffee grounds sourced from Hill’s Mix Tape. Half of the profits of the sale of those coffee beans are used to reforest and give the orangutans back their home. If it’s a nice piece of jewellery you’re after, look no further than Lines and Current, who channel 10% of their profits to charitable causes that bring about hope and change in people’s lives. My current favourite from their collection are the Mia threads (£25), they can be styled a number of different ways so you can experiment. Another option is a Madlug gym bag (£35). Madlug is a company born out of a desire to give children in care the value, worth and dignity that they deserve. With every one that is purchased a free bag is given to a child in care. You Glow Girl sell beautiful t-shirts and sweatshirts for both women and girls and

profits go back into GLOW NI to provide mental health and well-being programmes. For stocking fillers opt for Grace James reusable makeup remover wipes (£6.90), they are made of organic bamboo and Liberty of London fabric. Maybe you could include a chic Irish linen scrunchie produced by Kindred (£12-£15), 10% of their profits go towards funding sewing classes for survivors of human trafficking here in Northern Ireland. For that little sweet treat, try a hot chocolate melt from Refuge Chocolate (£2.50), who also support survivors of human trafficking with 100% of their profit going to Flourish NI. Alternatively, you could consider a chocolate bar from Wee Choco or some delicious flavoured marshmallows from Wee Mallows, both are community interest companies working to support those with autism and learning disabilities. For the men in your life why not think about a product from Oi (OutsideIn). Oi have become a well-known brand in Northern Ireland and beyond, counting Lewis Capaldi amongst their customers. They are the ‘Wear One, Share One’ company, with every purchase made a free product is gifted to someone without a home.
With a reusable water bottle from AKWA Bottles (£20), not only will you be helping him keep hydrated and healthy but you’ll also be helping to eliminate the use of plastic. At the higher end of the budget I would recommend the Pantridge Workbag from the Vintage Satchel Company (£145), for an additional £10 you can have it embossed with the recipient’s initials. The bags are made here in Belfast and the VSC are the only UK leather satchel brand that operates as a social enterprise. When you support their company you are also supporting people with disabilities and health-related conditions. Finally when it comes to a treat for a little someone, it has to be Uberbarn. They offer ethical and organic clothing for children and I’m a big fan of their own brand beanies which aren’t expensive at just £11. This Christmas presents you with an opportunity to give abundantly when it comes to your spending. May your gifting will be far reaching this festive season! (Not So) Secret Santa BY EUNICE NELSON
C
hristmas can get really expensive, and when you start factoring in all the relatives as well as all the kids, then it can get downright overwhelming. If like my family, you have a few siblings, partners and grown-up children then gift giving can get out of hand pretty quickly. The list gets longer every year and before you know it you’re freaking out about it by September. So like many families out there, we have been doing Secret Santa for a few years now. Simply pick a spending limit, put all the names in a hat and boom, you’ve got yourself a much less stressful shopping list. Sound easy right? That’s what we all thought. After you have lessened the financial stress the next thing you have to worry about is who will pick you out. It could make or break your Christmas Day. It’s a bit like an awards ceremony, you’re hoping the result will be amazing but you still need to spend some time in front of the mirror practicing your ‘grateful face’ and saying: “Oh my God I love it” when you really want to cry because you’ve been given a certificate that says you sponsored a
94
donkey for the next year. There are a lot of personalities in every family but I’ve narrowed down the list to include the folks that I think probably appear in every household. Of course it’s all hypothetical, I would never base this on my own family, I swear.
The blabber
There is always someone (I will name no names) who just can’t keep the gift giving a secret. You’ll be lucky if the name picking has even finished before you hear a whisper of: “who did you get?” Within the week everyone will know everything and there will be more requests flying around than a radio station on Valentine’s Day. With this person around there may not be any surprises come Christmas morning but at least there won’t be anything too hideous either.
The panicked person
It will be around a week before Christmas before this shopper decides to actually start shopping. At this point it will be too late to order online and the poor sod will have to brave the crowds of likeminded
latecomers. Will this intrepid warrior soldier on through the scrum and find the perfect gift for their designated someone? Will they heck, it will be a voucher from the closest place available and you’ll have to count yourself lucky.
The spender
Everyone in the family is praying that this person picks them. You know that the gift will be thoughtful, well presented and bang on budget. No skimping for this shopper. Their Christmas preparation probably starts around March because everyone’s gifts are tailored to suit them and personalised to perfection. The only downside to this wonderful person is when you have to buy a gift for them. The pressure. The only thing you can hope for is that they have a hobby. Personalised wooden spoon anyone?
The impatient elf
The fellas
These gift givers can fall into one of two categories and they will probably both be equally useless. Firstly there is the single man, perhaps your brother or brother in law, and they will be forced to shop for themselves (don’t ask your Mum lads), your gift will either be a voucher (probably from a shop that they like), a gadget that is totally unrelated to anything you are interested in, or your gift will be non-existent as they will have paid no attention to the secret Santa process in the first place. Lucky old you. Next there are the married gift givers. The lovely thing about these men is that come Christmas morning your present will be as much of a surprise to them as it is to you because their wives have done the shopping. Never in the history of time has there been a more pointless task than asking the married man to pick their secret Santa out of a hat. They don’t care. Because this present is not for them they will immediately forget who they have to buy for and leave it to their wife. It’s the thought that counts though right. Whether we get the gift we’ve been hoping for or you’ve sent a goat to a family in Outer Mongolia (charity is amazing but I also love skin care products), it’s all about family and adhering to the one day of the year when we all wear stupid jumpers and environmentally unfriendly hats from crackers. It’s the most tiring, amazing and magical day of the year when you have little ones, and if you have big people to deal with there is always a little glass or two of social lubrication to get you through it. Merry Christmas from me folks, I hope Santa makes all your dreams come true.
µµcharity is amazing but I also love skin care products∑∑
I have to admit this is me. I love giving presents and if I feel like I’ve really nailed a present then I can barely restrain myself from running over a week before the big day and ruining everything. I find Christmas as a parent particularly excruciating because each and every time Santa comes up with a good gift for my good girls I want them to have it there and then. I love to see the joy on their little faces on Christmas morning (more joyous for me if it’s after 5am) and I can barely stand the wait. I then get to spend the next eleven months telling them that they have too many toys. It’s a vicious circle.
The recycler
You know who you are and more importantly we know who you are. I know the slow cooker I gave you two years ago was a bit thoughtless but passing it on to our brother (who can’t cook) is just mean. And grinning at me while you do it is frankly terrifying. I swear there must be gift sets in some families that are passed around like the flu. It’s like the family secret that your uncle secretly cross dresses - everyone knows but no one mentions it.
The swapper
Don’t get into a relationship with this personality type because they are never satisfied with what they have. You can see the dread on their face when they pick a name and watch their eyes turn calculating as they wonder who best to swap with. Like a wily politician they will spend more time working out what’s best for them rather than focusing on someone else.

nd I’ve made it to the last column of the year. What a year it’s been; the big 50th birthday and that party in Malmaison, running my first full marathon in Belfast, the over the top travel plans to celebrate turning 50. 2019 adventures started off with a January trip to the sun in Alicante, a visit to Paris just before that fire, a night in a castle at Kilkea, a 500-mile drive around Scotland, my first camping trip to Castle Ward, an MSC cruise and a few more excursions in between. There were summer outings on a trip to CentreParcs Ireland (we’ve booked to go back in 2020) and another running adventure of 100 miles during July. I’ve started sea swimming, something that’s such a trend right now, but something my parents did regularly in the 1960s when it was the norm and not a fad. Also this year, I even started learning tap dance at Abbey Studios in Bangor and unexpectedly fell in love with it. It’s certainly been a full and busy year of adventures and experiences. There have been health challenges as well with a 24-hour stint in A&E in the Ulster Hospital, where I watched what I can only describe as a scene from a disaster movie in a crazy busy emergency ward
96
packed to the brim with patients everywhere and where a team of very hard working doctors and nurses cared for everyone with a smile. There has also been the usual constant management of my mental health to keep it in tip top shape with digital detox time, exercise, mindfulness, forest bathing, wild swimming and running. 2019 has seen a shift in my environmental awareness as well, both at home and in my Belfast Times business. My Christmas cards went naked, that means they are sold without plastic, I’ve switched to a bamboo toothbrush and a fully metal razor for shaving, and I’m increasingly aware of plastic packaging and taking steps to reduce it as much as I can. 2020 is shaping up with a few charity projects currently in planning stages and a few new personal goals planned, but apart from anything else, 2020 sounds like something from the future and yet….it’s about to happen, and I can’t help wonder what this new decade has in store. Have a great end to 2019 and I’ll see you next year!
