From partywear to glitzy makeup, the issue is dedicated to looking gorgeous this holiday season. For a polished look, pop on your imPRESS nails by KISS, before heading out on the town. It wouldn’t be the Christmas edition without a sprinkle of glitter and plenty of sparkle. LONG LENGTH

Chic, sophisticated and classy, make a dramatic entrance with a long coat. Pair you coat with slouch boots, silver ankle boots, sneakers… anything goes. For a feminine look, opt for a figure-flattering belted trench which will nip you in at the waist. Petite ladies, a knee-length style will look better on you than midi or ankle-length.

Winter trend report Trends to note now for the season ahead
S
tylist Rebecca McKinney and makeup artist Stevey Lennox bring you this guide to wow this winter. This trend report was compiled to pay tribute to The Style Edit; a fashion and beauty extravaganza led by the glamorous pair. The Style Edit – Christmas Edition will take place at the Galgorm Resort and Spa on Sunday 3rd December. Guests will be treated to Shortcross Gin cocktails, receive a party tanning plan from Bellamianta, and enjoy fashion shows showcasing looks from Cruise, Reiss, Ted
16
Baker, Coast, Warehouse, Mango, The Walk in Wardrobe, Chloe Dougan Design and Cameo Boutique. “The Style Edit takes place in the beautiful surrounds of the Galgorm, so we visited some of favourite areas in the resort to shoot our ultimate fashion and beauty looks for Christmas,” Rebecca begins. “This is a sneak peek of some of what our guests will enjoy at the upcoming show.” Rebecca and Stevey describe The Style Edit as ‘the ultimate girls’ event with accessible fashion and beauty for all. The event is aimed at all kinds of women who juggle busy lives, but ultimately enjoy style, makeup and a few cocktails at the weekend. The Style Edit – Christmas Edition promises to be ‘a light, relaxed afternoon, filled with craic, cocktails and fabulous clothes.’ Tickets cost £25 and are available from www.glistrr.com. n
Rebecca’s top five style buys for winter • ANYTHING RED From coats to trousers and boots – you can’t go wrong with red this Christmas • TASSEL EARRINGS The bigger the better! Style with your favourite top and leather trousers. • OVER THE KNEE BOOTS to wear with everything; leather miniskirts, dresses and jeans. • THE FANCY KNIT Adorn your knitwear with pearls, embellishment and as wide a sleeve as possible. • FAUX FUR COAT Classic neutrals or blacks will always be in style, but this winter, be brave and opt for a faux fur in a bold colour or animal print.
Rebecca
µµFor the most luxurious fabric you can wear this winter - it has to be velvet. Whether you stick with classic black, or mix it up with sumptuous emerald, go for a shape with a difference. An offthe-shoulder or strap detail will add drama to a dress, or if you’re more of a jacket girl, a velvet blazer will take you from the desk to the dance floor.∑∑ Rebecca

Forever Unique Dress from Cruise £160
µµThe festive season is the ultimate time of year to get your glitz on. I love the shape of this dress, sleeves keep the length classy, and minimal accessories let the sparkle do the talking. If full on sequins is too much for you, then a subtle bronze metallic is perfect.∑∑

Stevey’s winter beauty tips
Cobalt Dress by Victoria Beckham from Cruise £595
µµIt’s all too easy to stick to black, but why not try something a little brighter for winter nights? A flash of cobalt blue adds instant richness to an outfit, and a statement dress in bold colours will ensure you turn heads at every Christmas party. Throw a fabulous faux fur coat over the look and you’ll be glam from the car to the bar.∑∑
Silver Skirt £79, Sparkle Sleeve Top £89 – both from Coast
Floral Maxi Skirt £139, Top from £79 – both from Coast
µµDresses are not the only attire acceptable for Christmas parties why not try an amazing skirt? If dramatic full-length is not your thing, then go for a belted maxi skirt in a statement print. Style it with a crop top or cut-out detail body for that red carpet event. Show off your legs in a metallic mini with a difference. I also love a skirt styled with an embellished winter knit.∑∑
• SKINCARE IS KEY As the cold is starting to set in, get some hydration and moisture into your skin as this will help with creating the perfect festive complexion. • ALL ABOUT THAT GLOW Lay off the contour, ditch the bronzer, and invest in a good Illuminating primer or highlighter. This is the perfect way to add a little freshness to your look. • STATEMENT LIPS are in this season and berry shades are the way to go whether it’s a deep plum or a gorgeous raspberry shade. If you are not too keen on something overly daring opt for a gorgeous brown-toned nude. • METALLIC In the run up to Christmas most of my applications consist of gorgeous smokey eyes with a little added bling, alternatively choose a soft metallic sheen with your shadow. • LASHTASTIC I have seen a lot of clumpy lashes on the runway this season, personally I don’t feel any of my clients would be up for that at their Christmas do, so I usually use synthetic lashes instead to give a full luxurious look. When choosing synthetic lashes, look at the lash band - make sure the band is not too thick or the strips will ping off.
µµWith Rebecca’s look I went for understated glam. I smoked the eyes ever so slightly and added a little sparkle into the inner corner to open the eyes up. The lashes are the main focus with smudged out liner to add some drama. I paired this with a nude lip for the ultimate classic Christmas look.∑∑
Stevey
Trouble Maker Mascara £19.50, Naked 3 Palette £39.50, Lip Stick Sheer Vanished £15.50 – Urban Decay Cosmetics, Victoria Square
µµIt’s all about that sparkle. Skin is defiantly a focal point here - to create a beautiful base I started with a serum to ensure the foundation glides on and gives a healthy glow. Instead of going overboard with glitter I opted for a beautiful metallic tone on the eyes and soft brows. I wanted the lip to be the main focus as it’s definitely the season to be rocking a deep shade.∑∑

Claire King
from Corrie to Neverland 32
F
BY CATRIONA DOHERTY
rom the rolling dales of Emmerdale to the cobbles of Corrie, Claire King’s face is a familiar one to many, having also starred in Strictly Come Dancing, Bad Girls and Celebrity Big Brother, to name just a few. The star is set to perform in Peter Pan at the Grand Opera House, Belfast this Christmas. ‘What can audiences in Northern Ireland expect from Peter Pan?’ we begin. “A lot of laughter, a lot of fun, and great special effects,” Claire replies. “I think the show will be quite visually stunning - not necessarily me,” she jokes. The actress plays the role of Mimi the Magical Mermaid from Atlantis who helps Peter Pan escape the clutches of Captain Hook, in the pantomime that’s billed as a gravity-defying adventure to Neverland, sprinkled with fairy dust. “I am most looking forward to making sure the audience have a good time and a good laugh,” Claire says. “Kids are always in awe of the show and just love it, so I try to get them involved and make sure everyone has fun. “Belfast is a great city, I have been there several times and I’m looking forward to returning. I plan to catch up with a few friends during my visit and we will probably go out for a nice meal somewhere.”
The calculating Kim Tate
Claire considers nabbing the role of Emmerdale’s feisty Kim Tate, back in 1989, to be her big break into soap opera. Thinking back to the audition, the actress says she didn’t expect to get the role. She recalls: “There were two or three other people there that I thought had a better chance than me - one in particular, she was wearing a flat cap, boots, and looked very ‘Emmerdaley’. I thought she’s most probably going to get it.” Claire’s acting skills and natural flair for
horse-riding shone through on the day and she landed the job, much to her delight as it meant she could move back home to Yorkshire. She says: “Emmerdale was the big break early on in my life, I was there for about six years. I had a little time out because I actually died and left, and then Emmerdale wanted me back again. It was a case of mistaken identity on the slab, so it was a bit of a Bobby Ewing moment,” Claire laughs and continues, “so I did go back, it was a
cracking job and I was paid to ride horses all day which is my bag anyway.” The actress has many memorable moments from her time in Emmerdale but one stands out in particular for her: “I think the defining moment for Kim’s character probably came when Frank had his heart attack, she refused to give him his tablets and then put a mirror to his mouth to see if he was breathing, before powdering her nose.” Continued on 34 ➤
33
In Therapy, Channel 5 When asked if she plans to return to Emmerdale Claire replies: “Oh I don’t know, it was 20 years since I first started and a lot of water has passed under the bridge. I think Kim’s son James would be 24 now, so I guess he could go back as a handsome hunk of Emmerdale. But it’s not something that I have spoken about, so I don’t know really and I have just finished Corrie.” And speaking of Coronation Street, a highlight of working on the soap was getting to star alongside Beverley Callard who plays Liz McDonald. “Bev is a friend of mine and it was just really nice to have a friend on board. We did get to work together a little bit although we wanted more, we thought there might have been more of a twosome going on. “There was some great writing in Corrie but I just felt I didn’t really get enough you know. I think my time came and I just thought I have to move on, so I left.”
Fabulous at 50+
Claire certainly doesn’t look her 54 years. ‘You look amazing – what’s your secret?’ we ask. “I eat healthily and live off a Mediterranean diet,” Claire says, “I eat a lot of meat, fish, plenty of salad, fresh vegetables, lots of peppers, olives, and plenty of olive oil. I tend to cook everything from scratch and I very rarely have a takeaway. I exercise; swimming, horse riding – that sort of thing, and I have a good skincare routine. I try and look after myself without having all the surgery that tends to go with it; I just want to stay natural. You have to look after yourself, especially when you’re getting older.”
µµthe whole idea of therapy is great; I think everybody should have someone to talk to because it does give that release∑∑ In Therapy
Claire recently took part in Channel 5’s In Therapy; a reality TV documentary series filmed inside the consulting room of therapist Mandy Saligari.
34
Credit: Getty Images
‘What prompted you to take part in the programme?’ we ask. “I don’t know really, I thought it might be an interesting experiment but it was actually a lot harder to do that I imagined,” Claire explains, “it was quite hard on my family and friends as well. But the whole idea of therapy is great; I think everybody should have someone to talk to because it does give that release. It’s not something that should be poo-pooed and I wanted people to realise that therapy is not only for somebody who is facing a lot of problems or issues – everybody should have therapy or someone to talk to. So it was very positive as well as being hard work.” Claire found the experience beneficial, she says: “It was hard after the first one or two sessions and I wasn’t sure if I was going to see it through but I did, and it was well worth it because I did get a lot of things ironed out and a lot of issues sorted.” ‘On the programme you talked about some tough times you faced, what would you say to Northern Woman readers who
are going through a difficult situation at the moment?’ we ask. “I think just talk to somebody you trust or go and see a therapist. Get it out, discuss it. If you keep it bottled up you are going to start feeling ill or it’s just going to fester away. You need to talk about it.”
What’s next for the star?
Claire is now looking forward to her first Grand Opera House performance and going on holidays in early 2018. “There’s talks of tours and a TV series, so there are things bubbling away but I definitely want to take a few weeks off,” she says. Claire’s lips are sealed on the new TV series which will air on ITV in April. In the meantime she’s looking forward to spending Christmas in Belfast. n
Peter Pan will run from 2nd December to 14th January. For more information visit www.goh.co.uk.

Christmas REALITY The six stages of Christmas – before and having children BY EUNICE NELSON
A
s stressful as it is magical, this time of year brings out the best and worst in all of us. We are kinder to strangers, yet our nearest and dearest drive us crazy. We bend over backwards to make our kids’ dreams come true; only to engage in childish one-upmanship over lawn decorations. Things change drastically when children come into the equation and it’s more about scrapping in the toy shop than outside the pub. So forget the twelve days of Christmas; here are my six stages of Christmas from a ‘before’ and ‘after’ having kiddies perspective.
Post kids: Christmas prep now begins sometime around September, except for that one smug so-and-so who starts bragging about how she did all her shopping in the January sales and has had the gifts wrapped for months. You pretend to be amazed but secretly hope that her kids change their Santa lists on Christmas Eve. Your kids change their list daily to include every toy that they see, on every single advertisement, on every TV channel. You can now look forward to queues to see Santa, queues in shops, and praying nightly that your child doesn’t ask for this year’s must-have, limited edition, sold out toy. Hooray for Christmas.
1. Preparation
Pre kids: Sitting quietly at your kitchen table surrounded by foil wrapping, ribbons, bows and personalised gift tags... heavenly. You sip from a suitably festive tipple and get in the mood for the season by carefully wrapping gifts for your loved ones.
Pre kids: Tasteful and understated, that’s the look you go for at Christmas. You’ve bingewatched Kirsty’s Homemade Christmas and now your house looks like a place that Santa himself would be proud to call home. Why anyone would fill their home with gaudy lights and tacky tinsel is beyond you. I mean, you’re decorating your lounge for goodness sake not trying to build a flight path in the garden.
Post kids: Wrapping has now become a
Post kids: You have a Santa that plays
Pre kids: You love this time of year, last minute shopping at dusk and hot chocolate to warm your bones at a beautiful Christmas market. It’s such a joy getting that perfect gift for someone you love and the anticipation of the treats that await you under the tree make the wait worth it.
40
2. Gift wrapping
genuine concern and topic of conversation at the school gates. To wrap or not to wrap the Santa stuff. What did you do last year? What did your parents do? Which option will offer the most excitement/memorymaking potential on Christmas morning? As for everyone else’s presents, they will be lucky if it’s in one of last year’s gift bags. Your Mum’s present probably has the price attached and might still be in the Boots bag complete with receipt. Sorry Mum.
3. Decorating
you gave them. Sure they might be a little noisy but you’re certain their parents won’t mind. That’s what Christmas is all about.
Post kids: You have enough batteries in the cupboard to power a small Third World country and you’ve prepped a mountain of vegetables that your kids have never even seen before. Hopefully this year they won’t show you up in front of everyone by screaming for chicken nuggets. Come evening you’ve plied the kids with Dozol in the vain hope that they will actually sleep past three in the morning. You’ve finally gotten them to bed, only to discover three presents that need to be assembled before morning. So with a glass of wine in one hand and a screwdriver in the other you set to work. You finish up about 20 minutes before the kids come screaming downstairs and wonder if you can survive the day on 15 minutes of sleep.
guitar, one that pops out of a chimney, and one that mechanically moons each time you pass by. There are so many inflatable Christmas characters tethered in the garden that you’re slightly worried about the whole plot of land taking off, and you’re fairly sure that the front porch is a fire hazard. Your poor Christmas tree is tilting dangerously to one side because of the clay decorations your little one brought home from school, and beneath the tree is as barren as the Gobi Desert because last year your toddler opened everyone else’s gifts two weeks early. ‘Tis the season to be grumpy.
4. Christmas Eve
Pre kids: Whether it’s a quiet one in the local before midnight mass or relaxing with your feet up in front of a roaring fire, it’s always a special night. You are with family and friends, and as far as you’re concerned it really is the season to be jolly. Christmas morning awaits and you can’t wait to see the looks on the faces of your nieces and nephews when they unwrap the presents
µµyou’ve prepped a mountain of vegetables that your kids have never even seen before∑∑ 5. Christmas dinner
Pre kids: You wake sometime around noon to the smell of the delicious feast that’s about to come your way. You drag yourself from the comforting bed of your childhood room and bask in the warmth of the family get-together. Good food, good wine and great conversation. What’s not to love about Christmas Day? Nothing left to do now but nap in front of the TV until it’s time to party. Post kids: This has been the elephant in the room since about June. He thinks that his mother makes the best turkey when in fact you know that your mum makes the greatest roast potatoes on the planet. Christmas Day in someone else’s house is always weird so you do the dumbest thing that you’ve ever done and offer to cook Christmas dinner in your own home. You may have avoided the kids’ meltdown over leaving their new toys but now you face a
new dilemma; trying to cook a feast without having a breakdown or getting drunk in front of everyone because of the nerves. Oh the horror.
6. Christmas night
Pre kids: Some of the local clubs open at midnight so by eight o’clock you’re in your glad rags and the alcohol is flowing at a friend’s house. You’re texting all your friends who have kids but the excuses are coming in thick and fast - for the life of you, you can’t understand why they can’t just get a babysitter for one night. Oh well their loss. You are armed with a sexy Santa hat (mistletoe included) and are prepared to see every school friend and neighbour that you haven’t seen since last Christmas. After a couple of bottles of wine and obligatory glass of Baileys, you and a long lost buddy are now firm friends once more and you spend the night arm in arm singing Mariah Carey lyrics at the top of your voice. The only thing left to do is have an inappropriate Christmas kiss and then spend 14 hours sleeping off the hangover just in time for the Boxing Day session. Post kids: You’ve been looking at your kids’ excited little faces since four in the morning and are now ready to sell them to the highest bidder on eBay. Tired from lack of sleep and hyped up on too many selection boxes they now hate each other, and you, and are staging world war three over a cardboard box that some expensive piece of plastic crap came in. The little darlings will probably never sleep and to top it all off your single friends keep sending you messages to come and join the party that someone you have not seen in ten years is hosting. Your eyes are about to fall out of their sockets and you have developed a nervous tic at the sound of every new electrical toy that Santa brought, but you still wish that you were at the party. Maybe if you can stay up past nine you just might make it for one drink… yeah right. So here’s wishing everyone a merry Christmas. May the joy be plentiful, the presents returnable and may someone jingle your bells a few times for good measure. n

W
hen the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, thoughts turn to what’s in store for the coming 12 months. Pledges abound, whether it’s to lose weight, save money, or fix something else in your life. The New Year may mark a symbolic milestone for many – although let’s face it, we’ve had all year to change our situation – and among the top ten most popular resolutions is landing a dream job. While changing lifestyle habits is an instant decision, doing the groundwork to chase a new career takes time, preparation and planning. Just as you would dress to impress at interview, your CV needs to be the best possible you, in order to give potential employers an idea of what you can bring to their organisation.
New Year, new job Nail your CV and nab a new job in 2018 BY ALISON FLEMING How to impress
Michael Hewitt, Principal Consultant at specialist recruiters CPL NI, says a CV is the chance to showcase skills. “Employers want to see an achievement-based CV and times where you went that extra mile,” says Michael. “It’s important to quantify what you have done, for example how you have saved the company money, how you have increased their profits, what new ideas you introduced to improve the company culture. They don’t want to see a list of duties and responsibilities as that’s often boring. “The best way to construct a CV that is going to make you stand out from other
42
candidates is to start with a personal profile, which can include what your aims are in your next role. It can be written in first person. The idea is to show some of your character and if it’s written in the third
µµYou’ll impress more by cutting to the chase, than writing lengthy paragraphs∑∑
person it can almost sound like an obituary. Outline the strengths you’ll bring to the role, also include a skills profile followed by a section on education and qualifications. “Employment history should start with your most recent position and work backwards, and finally add some information about your hobbies, interests and if you have any voluntary activities outside of work.”
One page or two?
According to Michael, in an ideal world your CV should be around two pages long but this can differ depending on
what industry you are in and how much experience you have. To ensure you stand out from the crowd, he advises you to work with a recruiter who specialises in your chosen industry, who can sell you to potential employers, and vice versa. “A good, specialist recruiter should be able to advise you of the market, what sort of companies you would fit into and will have strong enough business relationships with their clients that they’ll be able to arrange a few meetings for you. All you have to do is answer the recruiter’s questions, meet them for a coffee, and be honest and open about the opportunities that you are interested in. “When applying through a recruiter, cover letters are less important however they can be important when applying directly for a role. “Cover letters shouldn’t be too long and they should align your experience with the job specification. Explain why you’re interested in working for the company and what you can bring to them as an employee,” Michael adds.
Cut to the chase
HR expert Tina Nicolai has seen thousands of CV’s during her career. The founder
of Resume Writers’ Ink, she’s had responsibility for leading talent acquisition teams with companies such as Disney World and Eddie Bauer. She says a good CV can make all the difference when it comes to landing the job of your dreams.
µµYour CV needs to be the best possible you∑∑ “A typo is something that has no place in a CV. If you’re serious about going after a role, the least you can do is a spell check,” says Tina. “What you write on a page translates to how a potential employer sees you and attention to detail is crucial. “Similarly, for a recruiter looking over hundreds of CVs for the same role, the onus is on the candidate to engage via their resume. Grab attention with bullets rather than a lengthy summary and avoid overly formal language. You’ll impress more by cutting to the chase, than writing lengthy paragraphs full of flowery language.”
Avoid buzzwords
For Tina, buzzwords are another no-go
area. Overused clichés such as ‘Out-ofthe-box’ and ‘blue sky thinkers’ need not apply. “Those competencies are a basic expectation in today’s job market, so tell it like it really is in a creative, succinct way avoiding office jargon,” she explains. And while there may not be enough adjectives in the dictionary to underline your skills, they’re unlikely to paint a true picture of who you are. For Tina, the golden rule is to keep it simple and give evidence of your expertise. “Rather than writing ‘responsible for’ at the beginning of every line when outlining previous employment, instead look at turning those requirements into evidence of your suitability,” she explains. “You might have been ‘responsible for managing relationships between stakeholders’ but if you tell a future employer that you worked closely on a day-to-day basis with a range of public and private sector partners, to achieve x, y or z, then you’re giving insight into the experience that could land you the role.” New year, new job? Knock their socks off in 2018! Do the homework now, and beating off the competition will be so much easier than giving up chocolate or joining a gym. Good luck! n

What’s your Christmas personality? BY CLARE BOWIE The shopper
Everybody knows one; this woman lives to shop! The term ‘six weeks to go’ means nothing to her because Christmas shopping is an ongoing 52-week-long affair. She probably has a designated wrapping station in her spare room, an ‘emergency present’ stash that would make Santa weep and she will never experience a Sellotape shortage situation. She knows about all the sales, tricks, codes, and markets in the Northern Hemisphere and Black Friday is, well, most Fridays actually. Least likely to say: “Ho, Ho, how much???!!!” Most likely to say: “I’ll take 10 of them, because… Christmas!”
µµIf Mary can give birth in a stable, I’m sure I can manage dinner for 16 to 20 people∑∑ The foodie
It’s ALL about the food with this one; her dream is to invent an edible organic Christmas tree. Don’t expect a tin of Quality Street or a scented candle from her; it will be chorizo jam or macadamia and cranberry cookies, with a bottle of spiced arancello, all wrapped in environmentallyfriendly newspaper. Although her food is delicious you sometimes mourn a simple turkey and trifle dinner as you tuck into your (Instagrammed) baba ganoush, roast
44
squab pigeon with brussel sprout foam and a deconstructed gluten-free-biscuit-based spiced ginger cheesecake. Least likely to say: “I just bought the sauce in M&S.” Most likely to say: “I can’t believe I only did two trial runs of the spiced stollen plait.” #facepalm
The can’t really be bothered one
It’s all such an effort; the presents, the fuss, the jumpers, and the excessive family time. Festivity is so not their forte and decorations don’t get a look in. They somehow manage to charmingly persuade everyone to buy their own presents and promise to reimburse them later. Or, they commit to a few clicks on-line and it’s all done, dusted, wrapped and delivered. On Christmas Day they can usually be found snoring on the sofa after convincing someone to top up their Baileys all day. They then leave with all the leftovers in Tupperware that will never be seen again. Least likely to say: “Sit down and I’ll do the washing up.” Most likely to say: “The turkey was a bit dry though.”
The perfectionist
You can hardly bear to visit her because your own home always feels like a shabby shack afterwards. In fact, her home makes Liberty’s feel underdressed. It is a glorious, understated yet achingly contemporary, winter wonderland of encased linen tealights, a hint of distressed holly and a shedload of classy elegance *weeps again*. There is an extreme sense of calm and a laminated spreadsheet will probably be
ticked off somewhere in the background and address labels neatly stuck onto cards, that are most likely handpainted. Sigh! Least likely to say: “Have you seen my gold tinsel?” Most likely to say: “I’ve just hand-carved a new crib scene”.
The re-gifter
If it’s on eBay she wants it. “What goes around comes around” is her favourite phrase for presents, rather than a Karmic philosophy to live by. It’s hard to get excited by her vintage approach to Christmas but at least you know to prepare yourself when you get a gift from her, so you can say: “Thanks, this is so useful”, instead of: “Erm, isn’t this your old purse?” She always
tells you the origin of the gift: “It’s a great book, got me through some bad times”, or: “I actually got this free when I bought new skincare”. Um, thanks? Least likely to say: “I bought you the cashmere gloves.” Most likely to say: “I still use my mini screwdrivers from last year’s crackers.”
The traditionalist
She loves Christmas and all its many trimmings, as long as it’s done in exactly the same way every year. Christmas decorations always comes out of the loft on the same date, Bing Crosby goes on, and the decorations go in exactly the same places not to be removed until the wise men have arrived thank you very much. The Queen
will receive her undivided at 3pm and there will be no last minute menu changes. Any talk of pancetta with the sprouts will be dismissed and all the nice wine disappears and numerous bottles of sticky sherry, Baileys and brandy appear instead. Least likely to say: “I just threw everything in gift bags this year instead of wrapping.” Most likely to say: “More fruit cake?”
She would open presents on Christmas Day but she’ll probably be far too busy and did she mention that she’s been up since 5am attending to the turkey for 16 to 20 people, but it’s absolutely no problem! Least likely to say: “Can you do the roasties, mine never crisp up.” Most likely to say:“I’m fffiiiiinnnnneeee.”
The martyr
When she’s had enough of the shopper, the foodie, the martyr, the can’t really be bothered one, the traditionalist, and the perfectionist, she decides to escape and books two weeks in Mauritius. Least likely to say: “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” Most likely to say: “See you in 2018, suckers.” n
She says she’s coping but wallows in the feeling of being put upon and keeps refusing offers of help so she can passivelyaggressively mutter to herself when they’ve left her kitchen: “If Mary can give birth in a stable, I’m sure I can manage dinner for 16 to 20 people. Single-handedly. On my own!”

Share a little love by volunteering Christmas is a time for giving, but sometimes the most precious gift is time. Jade Beecroft meets volunteers who do just that
T
here’s something about the festive season that brings out the inner philanthropist; a time to count our blessings and spare a thought for those less fortunate. And with the new year just round the corner, it’s also a time for resolutions and taking stock. There are hundreds of charities and community groups across Northern Ireland and Donegal that wouldn’t exist without an army of dedicated volunteers, so if you’re serious about making a difference, giving your time to help others is a great place to start.
Where to start?
Denise Hayward is chief executive of Volunteer Now, which lists volunteering opportunities across the province on its website. “Whatever your skills or interests there will be a role out there for you,” she says. “We work with all sorts of organisations – charities, community groups, church groups and even the health service. “You can limit your search using things like your postcode or area of interest. We also
46
suggest you work out where your passion lies first; do you want to work with children? Animals? The elderly? Something creative? There will be a role out there to suit you.”
Why volunteer?
Denise, who volunteers herself for the Tearfund and Armagh’s Talking Newspaper Service, says the benefits are huge. “Volunteering has such a positive impact on both your mental and physical health and wellbeing,” she explains. “It helps you feel connected. “For younger people, it’s valuable experience in the workplace and looks great on your CV. For busy professionals or parents it’s a refreshing change, and an interest outside of your career or family. And for retired folk it gives you structure and new friends. “Personally I look forward to the camaraderie and craic at my volunteering roles, and I love that feeling of giving something back.” n To search for volunteering opportunities across Northern Ireland visit www.volunteernow.co.uk or call 02980 232020.
THE ANIMAL LOVER
Retired Carol Robinson, lives near Killinchy and has been volunteering for Belfast Cats Protection for five years. She says: “I think it’s really important to volunteer for a cause you feel passionately about, and I’m the original crazy cat lady! “I first came across Belfast Cats Protection when I rehomed my own cat, Cassandra. I’ve been volunteering for the charity for five years now, and I spend every Friday morning at the centre. I clean out the cattery and socialise with the cats, as well as showing potential adopters around. I also help out at events and functions, making tea and talking to people about the work Cats Protection does. “One of the most special parts of the role is when we get a cat that is very shy or scared of people, and with lots of TLC they start to come around. Seeing them find loving new homes is so heartwarming. I get an incredible amount of satisfaction from that. “Volunteering is also a great way to meet new friends. I adore my time spent playing with the cats, but I’ve also made a close-knit group of human pals at Cats Protection too. “To anyone thinking of volunteering, choose wisely. Don’t just get dragged into something by a friend or neighbour; if you’re going to give it your all then you need to find a cause you really care about.” To find out about volunteering at Belfast Cats Protection call the centre on 02890 480202, email Belfast@cats.org.uk or check out the volunteer section on their website: www.belfast.cats.org.uk
THE BUSY MUM
THE CHAMPION
Mum-of-three Nina Cristinacce, from Bangor, beat breast cancer last year. She now runs coffee shop The Drawing Room in Bangor, and volunteers for Cancer Research UK and Macmillan. “I first started volunteering with Macmillan when I was going through chemo. You can feel so out of control when you have cancer – it was my way of trying to get something positive out of it. I was one of their ‘Cancer Voice’ volunteers – giving feedback on things like leaflets and booklets, and taking part in their online research. “Once my treatment had finished I became a community volunteer, going out
to visit other patients in their own homes. Cancer can be such a lonely experience; sometimes I was just a listening ear, but I also helped out with practical things like shopping. “As part of my recovery, I had a huge bespoke tattoo etched over my surgery scars. That’s what gave me the idea to hold a photographic exhibition showing beautiful portraits cancer patients and their scars. “With the help of Macmillan, Cancer Focus NI and Pretty In Pink, I organised the show, called ‘Here I Am’, last year, and even stripped down to take part in the photo shoot myself. I also now volunteer for Cancer Research UK, taking part in their promotional campaigns and videos. “In May this year I was named Macmillan’s UK Community Volunteer of the Year, which made me so incredibly proud. For me, I feel that if you have experience to share in a positive way, to help others, then you should do it.” To volunteer for Macmillan, visit www.macmillan.org.uk. THE SURVIVOR
Former teacher and mum-of-four Helen Graham, from Richhill, is a volunteer ambassador for the Stroke Association. Helen says: “My life changed completely when I suffered a stroke at the age of 45. I was a busy working mum; I didn’t even know people that young could have a stroke. In the week leading up to it I had a severe headache and dizzy spells but I just put it down to tiredness. “I’ve been luckier than some; I had a 10-day spell in hospital and months of physio, but my stroke had a lasting impact and I’m still unable to return to work. I first got involved with the Stroke Association through their Make May Purple awareness month. We held a coffee morning, with purple buns of course, and I spoke to people about my stroke. “Then I did a one-day course to become an ambassador for the charity. They were so good – they even provided a bed for me to take an hour’s rest halfway through the day. “Now I work to raise awareness of the symptoms of stroke wherever I go. It’s so important to me that people know what signs to look out for – including dizziness, confusion, headaches, loss of balance, dropping facial features and
Gemma Watson, from Derry, has been volunteering as a breastfeeding peer support mum for the Western Health and Social Care Trust for a year. Gemma says: “When I had my first child, Emily, 17 years ago, there was so little support out there for breastfeeding mums. I tried my best but after a few days I got so sore I had to give up and move to formula. “But when my second child, Thomas, was born three years ago things were so different; I was offered so much support and advice – both in the hospital and in the community. “It really made a difference to me; I attended a breastfeeding support group and decided I wanted to help other mums struggling to feed, and give something back. I completed a training programme on breastfeeding support through the Western Trust, and now I volunteer one evening a week at Altnagelvin Hospital. “Volunteers can offer their support in a variety of locations – the postnatal ward, midwifery led unit, neonatal unit, antenatal classes, antenatal workshops, and even through a text messaging service. Every Thursday evening I spend several hours on the post-natal ward chatting to new mums. “It’s so rewarding to be able to help; it can be daunting when you’ve just had a baby but you don’t have to feel alone. I give them tips on technique, latching-on, and just offer a listening and supportive ear. “Volunteering also feels like me-time, away from my job in the civil service and busy family, to concentrate on making a difference to a cause really close to my heart.” To find out about becoming a peer support mum, contact the breastfeeding co-ordinator at your local health trust.
tingling down the arm or leg. “The whole family has got involved; my 16-year-old daughter has organised numerous fundraising events and even did a sponsored four-mile road run. “If you’re considering volunteering, it doesn’t have to take up all your time, you can fit it around your day-to-day life. “For me, if I can save just one person through raising awareness of stroke, then that’s reason enough to do it.”

Tried & Tested Max Factor Crème Bronzer in Light Gold £9.99 For those preferring a more subtle, lightly sun-kissed approach to bronzing – and wishing to avoid the Kentucky Fried Chicken look – this product is ideal. Inexpensive and easy to apply, it is perfect for adding a glow to pale skin with a few flashes to the cheeks, chin and forehead. THE VERDICT: For those less proficient at applying makeup, its subtlety and easy application make it easy to start out with a minimal application and gradually build up. AM

I liked that it came with a mirror because it meant you could pop it in your handbag and apply on the go. THE VERDICT: Reasonably priced with great colours. ED
Sleek Face Form Contour Kit Medium £10 I love this kit; a bronzer, highlighter and blusher all in one. The products are really pigmented and the blusher is a lovely shimmery shade. If you have fair skin choose a honey tone. If you have a medium skin tone, opt for a rose or gold-flecked bronzer. If you have dark skin buy a tawny or amber bronzer. • Use a wide fluffy powder brush with a rounded top. If your brush is too small or stiff it may cause streaking and the bronzer could appear blotchy on your skin. • Tap the excess bronzer off the brush and build up product gradually to achieve a more natural look. • Apply the product in the shape of a 3 on your face. Start with the forehead around your hairline, then brush bronzer onto your cheekbones, followed by your jawline. Focus on the areas where the sun would hit your face.
Wet n Wild ColorIcon Bronzer £3.99 This bronzer is very subtle and gives a light golden beige glow. I actually used it more as a highlighter as it gives a beautiful soft shine that is not too dramatic, so it’s quite daytime or work appropriate. It feels smooth and silky on application and was long lasting. You get a lot of product for your money, and it has SPF. THE VERDICT: I would buy this again and use it as a highlighter. SG
IsaDora Face Sculptor 01 Warm Peach 21.95 I have a medium skin tone with freckles, so the bronzer in this IsaDora contouring set is the perfect shade for me. THE VERDICT: I like the matt finish, the shade, and the fact that it stayed put all day. £21.95 is more than I usually pay for makeup, however Christmas is just around the corner and I would be delighted to receive this product as a gift! WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANCE BEST BEST PIECE OF ADVICE WHEN CONSIDERING COSMETIC SURGERY? Do your research and ask plenty of questions at your consultation. You want to ensure you are in the safest and most experienced of hands.
WHAT ABOUT SIZE, WHAT IS THE AVERAGE INCREASE? The majority of our patients go from an A cup to just a C cup. We’re talking a subtle increase in volume, a more feminine shape and most importantly, natural looking results.
WHAT EXACTLY SHOULD WOULD-BE PATIENTS LOOK OUT FOR? It’s important that your Surgeon is a “Consultant Plastic Surgeon” and qualified to the absolute highest level. I would also ensure that your surgery takes place in a hospital and that you stay overnight.
WHAT ABOUT THE PAIN FACTOR? Naturally it depends on the surgery and everyone recovers differently but for Breast Augmentation surgery for example patients tend to describe the feeling of stiffness and tenderness, that feeling you get when you over do it in the gym. You can expect to take about a week off work.
Aftercare is incredibly important, you want to make sure your provider has medical care available to you 24/7. I take calls in the middle of the night from patients who just want to be reassured about something small, it’s important to be available to patients 24/7.
Again it comes back to making sure your provider is available to you 24/7. Our patients can call me or one of our Nurses day or night. Generally of course they don’t need to and they just pop back in to see us one week and then six weeks post surgery.
WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON COSMETIC SURGERY PROCEDURE? Breast Augmentation continues to be the most common, followed by breast reduction, liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Facial surgery is also on the increase. Advancements in techniques allow beautifully subtle and sophisticated results. Again, the key is choosing only the most reputable and experienced of providers. The skill of your Surgeon is of paramount importance.
If you are considering any type of cosmetic surgery procedure, the best advice is to speak with the most reputable of providers, do your research so you can make an informed decision.

How to apply glitter eyeshadow like a pro BY CLAIRE CRAIG
ALL THAT GLITTERS BASE CONTROL
A good eyeshadow primer is key for this look. Not only will it give your glitter a base to stick to but it will help prevent creasing, colour transfer, and help to keep your lids sparkling all night long. Apply generously, taking it up to just below the brow bone.
WASH OUT
Credit: Barry M
For a striking single colour look, pick a pressed or cream eyeshadow in the same shade of glitter you plan to use. Sweep it all over eyelid with a large fluffy brush and then to gently underline your lower lashes with the eyeshadow. Not only will this give you an extra bit of colour, it also means if any particles do fall off during your night out on the town, you won’t be left looking patchy.

et’s face it, if you can’t rock a sparkly eye over the festive season then when can you? While there’s no denying this is a dramatic look, done properly it oozes glamour. Strictly for after-dark, stick to hues of gold, silver, and bronze for a molten metallic effect and pair with a matte lip for the perfect party look. Loose glitter can be a messy business so to prevent any fallout ruining your base, it’s best to apply to clean, prepped skin, before foundation. A glitter fixer or primer will help keep it in place. A dusting of translucent powder under the eye area will catch any rogue particles that can be easily wiped off with a tissue.
Now for the fun part. Using a dampened sponge applicator gently press loose glitter onto the lid. Apply a small amount at a time for a concentrated look. The moisture from the sponge should be enough to make the glitter stick but if you’re looking for extra staying power then use a small dab of eyelash glue or Vaseline. If full-on sparkle’s not your thing then a glitter outline or a gentle dusting of shimmer in the inner corners can be just as effective.
GET LASHED
Finish your eyes with a flick of liquid eyeliner - kohl will upset the glitter - before layering on a few coats of mascara or your favourite falsies.
CLEAN UP YOUR ACT
A cotton ball dipped in an oil-based makeup remover should be enough to banish any loose sprinkles, or for stubborn sparkles gently pat skin with Sellotape to lift unwanted residue. Complete your makeup routine as usual et voila! n

I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I turned up for my bioenergy healing session with Fermanagh-based therapist Kathy Watters. But before we got started she explained that she’d ask me to stand and sit, and that I may feel hot, cold, tingly, light-headed, or even nauseous. Not to worry, this was normal. She also firmly told me that during our session there’d be no talking – a struggle for a natural chatterbox like me. Instead we’d be listening to a soothing CD as she worked. I could close my eyes if I liked, or keep them open to watch what she was doing. Obviously I chose the latter! After asking me to stand in the centre of the room, Kathy began performing a serious of hand movements around me, holding her palms inches above my skin so I could feel the heat radiating off them. It was like she was performing an elaborate and beautiful dance. After each series of hand movements she’d step back to make a gesture of brushing away. At first I felt a bit silly, but suddenly I became aware of how heavy my body felt. My feet were aching and my fingers felt like lead. It was as if I was being drawn into the ground. As the session went on, Kathy began to focus her attention more on the area around my diaphragm, and I could see she was concentrating on something. The seated portion of the therapy was more relaxing, as Kathy performed a series of drawing movements down my body and legs. It felt I like was being massaged by air. The whole experience was surprisingly relaxing and empowering, although I was biting my tongue as my head was filled with dozens of questions about what she was doing. After concluding the therapy we discussed her findings. Kathy told me that although she considered me to be in relatively good health, she’d found a blockage around my power centre – the chakra at my solar plexus – hence all the work near my diaphragm. “You’re not the first person to tell me I need to relax more,” I grinned as she advised me to learn to let go and go with the flow. As a chronic do-er, I’ve never had any idea where my ‘off button’ is. Kathy prescribed a follow-up programme of self-care including meditation, journaling, affirmations and visualization; sign-posting me to the free daily mindset download on her website. Overall, I found bioenergy healing to be an extremely calming, positive and non-invasive form of therapy; almost an expression of kindness to myself. Bioenergy healing sessions with Kathy Watters start from £60 for an hour, or £150 for three hours of healing and lifecoaching. She also offers courses, retreats and distance healing. Surviving Christmas Christmas doesn’t have to be a time of excess. Jade Beecroft finds out how to stay healthy during the festive season
I
t’s mid-afternoon on Boxing Day and you’re sprawled on the sofa with a dull headache, nursing a tin of Quality Street, top button of your jeans undone, wondering how you’re going to stomach the inevitable cold turkey buffet. We’ve all been there. As the excesses of Christmas sink in and the self-loathing hits, you vow to clean up your act in the new year. January 1st will be all about green tea, spinning classes and smashed avocados. But until then, you dig your hand back into the Quality Street. Big purple one? Or green triangle? Sure… you might as well just have both. And another glass of Baileys while you’re at it. Christmas is traditionally a time of excess; with the inevitable round of parties, drinks, dinners, late nights, early mornings, family gatherings and work dos. The diet and gym routines go out the window. But according to local wellness experts, it is possible to enjoy the festive season without being physically and mentally ravaged by it.
have to be inevitable, according to Sonya McAllister, founder of We Slim Together. She advises her members, in groups across Northern Ireland, to enjoy Christmas but be mindful of their food choices. “It’s okay to over-indulge for a day or two,” she explains. “Enjoy your Christmas dinner. Enjoy your dessert or cheese and crackers. The damage isn’t done on Christmas Day – it’s done in the weeks leading up to it. “If you’re going to have a blow-out, do it for a couple of days – not for the whole month of December.” Sonya tells her members to avoid mindless nibbling in the office or at drinks parties, where a couple of handfuls of chocolates or buffet savories could add up to 1,000 calories. “Just because a food is tiny, doesn’t mean its low cal,” she explains. “Those mini quiches and pastries really add up. If you know there’s going to be a buffet, have a healthy dinner before you go out. If you’re starving you won’t be able to resist the nibbles.”
How to avoid weight gain
Make healthy choices
For a start, piling on the pounds doesn’t

Christmas dinner itself can be surprisingly
healthy if you pile your plate with turkey and vegetables. And at the buffet table you can opt for carrot sticks and cocktail sausages. Watch the calories in your drinks too – a gin and tonic is less sinful than a Baileys over ice. But most importantly, Sonya says, don’t succumb to guilt. “If you end up overeating, don’t feel bad, just make lighter choices the next day,” she explains. “If you feel guilty then you’re more likely to throw in the towel completely and keep on eating. “I use a bunch of flowers analogy. If one flower dies, you don’t chuck out the whole bunch, do you? “It’s better to just put on a pound or two over Christmas, which you can easily lose in the new year, than ending up 7lbs heavier because of needless overeating.”
Working out at home
You don’t have to drop your exercise regime in December either, according to personal trainer and online fitness coach Talitha Ishtiaque. “If you’re rushing around and you don’t have time for the gym, there’s plenty of
HANGOVER CURES You had one too many last night, and now your head is splitting while your stomach does summersaults. Try these tips to ease the pain: Water: It’s the obvious one, but you’ve got a headache because you’re dehydrated. If you didn’t have the presence of mind to down a pint of water before you went to bed, at least stock up when you wake up. For added benefit, try diluting pure orange juice for extra vitamins and energy, or a rehydration sachet from the pharmacy. Peppermint or chamomile tea: This’ll help rehydrate you while soothing your stomach at the same time. If you’re feeling sick it’ll be easy to sip. Eggs on brown toast: Eggs are full of protein and nutrients, including taurine, which helps boost liver function. Meanwhile the toast will be easy to stomach while giving you energy. Opt for poached or scrambled – a fried egg might be too greasy on a sensitive tum. things you can do at home,” she advises. “So many people think that if they can’t do their usual hour-long work-out then they might as well not bother, but you can burn 200 calories in 15 minutes if you want to. “Use your house; time yourself running up and down the stairs, do dips with the back of a chair, get down on the carpet and do push-ups and sit ups. “If you need motivation there’s so many classes online now. My YouTube channel is full of exercises you can do at home, in-between entertaining the in-laws or preparing dinner. “Whatever you do – just doing something to get moving is better than doing nothing.”
Enjoy the great outdoors
Talitha also suggests getting outdoors whenever you can over the festive season. “It’s so easy to end up feeling bloated and sluggish when you’re stuck in the house,” she explains.
µµIt’s all about having a balanced attitude to life∑∑ “If you go out for a walk and get some fresh air you’ll feel so much better, and in Northern Ireland we’re spoilt for choice with outdoor spaces. “Near my home in Glengormley, for example, I have Cavehill and Hazelbank Park. I can powerwalk up Cavehill or jog up and down the beach and steps at Hazelbank. Take the whole family, take the dog or just take yourself, but get out, move your body and clear your head.” And don’t forget the water. Talitha advises drinking up to four litres a day to stay hydrated. “At Christmas time we drink more alcohol and eat stodgier food,” she says.
“Simply making sure you’re drinking enough water will help you feel less bloated.”
Schedule ‘me time’
Busy mum Susan McCormick runs Fitsteps Belfast, with dance fitness classes across the city. She agrees that you need to make time for yourself over the Christmas period. “You need to make yourself as much of a priority as everybody else,” she says. “Put some ‘me time’ on the calendar and stick to it. Go out for a walk with a friend and clear your head. “December can be a bit like a slow puncture – you feel yourself deflating and losing energy as the month goes on. But it doesn’t have to be like that; just stick to your healthy habits and enjoy Christmas in moderation. Have that mince pie – but skip the cream.” Susan, who has three boys, also suggests getting the kids involved in your wellness routine. “If they’re off school, get them moving with you,” she says. “Take them to the park and run around, use outdoor gym equipment and have fun. “If it’s raining, stay indoors, put some music on and dance around the room like lunatics. Really let go and let off
Miso soup: Another trick to help you rehydrate and boost your sodium levels, and another that you can sip if you’re feeling too sick for a plateful of food. Oats with honey: Oats help neutralize acids in the body and raise bloody sugar, and a bowl of porridge is full of vitamins and iron. Honey is another natural way to boost your nutrient intake and energy levels. And if all else fails… my dad swears by a Twix to get him going again after a rough night!
some steam. Do Flashdance or the Grease megamix and don’t hold back.”
Balance is key
“It’s all about having a balanced attitude to life. If you overindulge one evening, eat lightly and go for a walk the following day. Enjoy Christmas, spend time with your family, and set yourself up for a healthy and happy new year,” Susan adds. And it’s not just your physical health that can suffer over the Christmas period – your nerves can end up frazzled too. Charlene Brookes, Chief Executive of local support organisation Parenting NI, has this advice: “Expectations around Christmas are often high, with so many putting an emphasis on the ‘perfect’ family Christmas. “We would suggest to parents, as difficult as this can be, to not to get drawn into what others are spending or doing and do what is right for your family. Try to plan by writing a list of everything you need and setting a budget; most importantly, try and stick to your budget. “Talk to your children about the value of things and explain that it’s not all about getting presents, that Christmas time is a good time to spend together and make memories.” n

reasons why
CHOCOLATE IS SCIENTIFICALLY GOOD FOR YOU
C
BY LIZ CONNOR
hocolate lovers, we have good news for you this Christmas, chocolate actually has a number of surprising health benefits, from helping to lower your blood pressure to kicking your cough. Enjoyed in moderation, of course!
1. It’s good for your bones White chocolate fans rejoice; a small 50g bar contains one sixth of the recommended daily allowance of calcium.
2. It can lower your blood pressure
A recent study found that flavanol-rich chocolate and cocoa products had a statistically significant effect in lowering blood pressure in the short term. Flavanols found in cocoa beans aid the production of nitric oxide, which stimulates blood vessels to dilate. The top fifth of chocolate-eaters in the study were 12 percent less likely to develop heart disease and 23 percent less likely to suffer a stroke compared with the bottom fifth of consumers.

3. It can kick your cough
Rather than reaching for the soothers, try a bar of chocolate next time you’re suffering from a tickly cough. One of the chocolate chemical components, theobromin has been found to reduce the activity of the vagus nerve, the part of the brain that triggers coughing fits.
4. It’s loaded with antioxidants
Well, dark chocolate is at least, containing hefty amounts of diseasefighting flavenoids which are also found in red wine and many fruits and vegetables.
5. It can help with PMS
There’s a reason why women crave chocolate at that time of the month; chocolate releases calming endorphins that reduce anxiety and are high in magnesium which lifts moods and reduces water retention.
6. It can strengthen your brain
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University found that dark chocolate shields cells in your brain. Epicatechin, a compound found in chocolate can significantly reduce brain damage and protect your brain from the damage caused by stroke. n

7 charming old towns for a cosy winter break in Europe
W
BY LIZ CONNOR
ith summer feeling like a lifetime away, it’s time to stop chasing the sun and start embracing the cosy winter temperatures – and there’s no better place to do it than at one of Europe’s old towns. What could be more romantic than breathing in a healthy dose of fresh air while strolling aimlessly amongst chocolate box towns, stopping only to admire the fairy-tale views with a warming glass of glühwein? If you want to avoid heaving crowds of tourists in Bruges and Prague, there are plenty of lesser-known options on the continent for the intrepid traveller. From hidden German gems to the next big Insta-destination in Estonia, we’ve got your winter hit list sorted.
Ghent, Belgium
Medieval Ghent is Belgium’s best kept secret. While Brussels and Bruges are popular destinations, this fairytale port city is still fairly under-the-radar with most

people, making it the perfect escape for a low-key getaway. While you’ll easily fall in love with beautiful Patershol (the historic old quarter and its Flemish architecture) it’s not all listed buildings and handsome bridges; underneath all of its quaint charms, Ghent has a young, arty energy with a burgeoning art and music scene – particularly in hip Kunsten-Kwartier, where Ghent’s 70,000 students live.
Trondheim, Norway
Trondheim looks like a scene from a snow globe when the temperatures drop: all powdery snow-covered streets, twinkling fairy lights and colourful gingerbread-like houses. It’s a city known for its students, cycling and gastro credentials. Make sure to check out popular food spots Rom og Kjøkken, Credo and Folk & Fe – they’re all listed in the White Guide, the Nordic region’s answer to the Michelin Guide. Beer is big news in Trondheim, so it’s worth making the hour drive to Tautra brewery, where you can sample the famous Norwegian ales brewed on-site.
Sibiu, Romania
Idyllic Sibiu is nestled in Romania’s verdant Transylvanian countryside, at the foothills
of the Cindrel Mountains. Most people head to neighbouring Bucharest for a winter escape, but clever tourists make a play for this lesser-visited Saxon city. In the winter, a traditional Christmas market takes over it famous Piata Mare plaza, which is a big draw for people looking to get into the festive spirit early. Here you can glug a glass of mulled wine while scoffing roasted almonds amongst some of Europe’s finest Baroque architecture.

Locals recommend climbing up the 258 steps of the St. Olaf’s tower to get a good view of its red rooftops and church spires in one go. There’s lots to see: the Market Square with its 14th century buildings, the Town Hall Tower which has one of the best views over the city and the rather terrifying Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
This Hanseatic city in northwestern Germany is one of the oldest in the country, and is famous for inspiring the Grimm’s folklore story of the Musicians of Bremen.

Ljubljana, Slovenia
Cobbled squares, pavement cafes, postcardworthy canal bridge scenes… it’s easy to see why people fall for Slovenia’s little-known capital city. Ljubljana, translating literally to ‘beloved’, isn’t as big as the likes of Paris, Madrid and London, but it more than makes up for its shortcomings in bags of local charm and character – it even has a castle looking over the entire city. If you’re a fan of plants, this place has plenty of home inspo. As Europe’s greenest city, there’s plant life literally everywhere, with flora and fauna weeping over the edges of canal banks and trailing onto the streets. Better yet, it’s super affordable; a pint of beer will set you back around £2. n

Marbella Adults only with a bit of a buzz
H
ell, as Jean-Paul Sartre should have said, is other people’s children. With your own you can shout, threaten, cajole and bribe; try any of the above with other people’s children at your peril. If all else fails with your own kids, you can run away for a spa weekend, but you are still stuck with other people’s children. Right? Not at Amare Marbella, which is an adult only establishment. ‘Adult only’ sounds a bit porny, but the Amare Marbella is about as far from sleazy as you can get. I was a bit worried about going to ‘Marbs’ in the first place. I don’t watch The Only Way is Essex aka TOWIE, but if you have a TV you can’t escape its erstwhile ‘stars’ – a vacuous lot with big hair and even larger egos. This crew spend a lot of time in ‘Marbs’ and I was a bit worried that I was going to end up surrounded by orangecoloured people screeching: “OMG! Shut UP Babes,” at each other. Well OMG Babes, where do I begin? First of all, what the TOWIE lot call ‘Marbs’ is actually Puerto Banus, a good car journey away from Marbella itself. Contrary to my imaginings, Marbella is a typical Andalusian town with cobbled winding streets and pretty white houses covered with gorgeous flowers.
Cutting-edge cool
The Amare Marbella hotel is beside the sea but also in the heart of the town. The
64
BY ANNE MARIE SCANLON property was refurbished earlier this year, and the designers have done a fantastic job of creating a space that is cutting-edge cool yet relaxing. Amare Marbella Beach Hotel rates start at £110 per night based on two people sharing, breakfast included. The Beach Club encompasses an indoor restaurant, outside seating, a pool and additional seating on the beach. Pretty typical so far, but the Club has one of the best things I’ve ever encountered. Ever! Normally, when you are lounging by the pool and you want something, you have to struggle up and find a waiter and then (and this is usually the hard bit) catch their eye. In the Amare Beach Club they give you a massive red buzzer when you check in and if you want to order something you just press it. The waiters all wear wristbands and the buzzers deliver small electric shocks which makes them attend to your needs super-fast! OK, I made up the last bit. The waiters wear little bracelets that vibrate to let them know when someone needs them. This is the best - especially as one of the rules of motherhood is that as soon as you sit down your child will ensure you get up again.
Exploring Marbs
Unfortunately, my trip coincided with really unusual and unseasonable weather – it rained almost constantly. However, I was so happy, in the endlessly relaxing, child-free atmosphere that I didn’t care. In-between showers, I was able to pop out and explore the old town. The locals were all extremely friendly. I also went to Fuerte Marbella, a
long established hotel, to join my friends for lunch. The place was full of older couples, including a few from Belfast who go every year. Like me, they didn’t care about the rain, they were just happy to be ‘away’. Following a blow-dry (for a paltry €18), it was time to see ‘Marbs’ aka Puerto Banus. Yes, there was a lot of “OMG babes!” to be heard and plenty of young women in ‘difficult’ shoes. But I can see why they all love it so much as the shopping is great. I’m a lover of fake designer handbags and the Marina was crawling with vendors. Unfortunately, these guys took pushy to a whole new level, so I left them to it.
Nightlife
Some of the younger ladies in our group returned to Puerto Banus later that night to check out the bars. The dirty stop-outs didn’t get back until 4am, and related that the only money they’d spent the entire evening was the taxi there and back. Apparently, the bars are quite happy to entice young attractive women in with free drink, and they were more than happy to oblige (hey, I’m not judging, just jealous). We weren’t the only group enjoying the child-free facilities at the Amare Marbella. Some like us were there for a girlie spa weekend, others were there for the culture, and some just wanted to lie on the beach with their big red buzzer. Even when the rain was belting down there were a few hardy souls, under shelter with blankets clutching their buzzers and wine glasses. And with nobody around chanting: “Mum! Mum! Mum!” on a loop, who can blame them! n
Rebecca’s Wine Recommendation: SALICE SALENTINO RISERVA 2012 Its festive time again, nights out or in with family, friends, work colleagues or anyone who wants to party! This is the time of year to indulge in a robust hearty red wine. Our Salice Salentino Riserva 2012 from the list at Fratelli is a perfect example of how winemakers in the south of Italy are blossoming in the world of quality drinkable affordable gems. Heralding from Puglia in the south-east corner of Italy, Salice Salentino is produced from Negromara. Early vintage in September is essential to prevent “cooked” flavours in the wine due to the hot climate. In the local dialect Negromara is known as “Niuru Maru” which translates as “black and bitter”. Certainly, it produces a wine deep purple in colour with a hint of ruby at the rim but any bitterness this grape may present is softened by the addition of 5% Malvasia and the 24 months ageing prior to release required of riserva wines. On the nose, a distinctive aroma of tobacco is present and pleasantly warming, followed by black cherry dried fig and bitter chocolate on the palate. This is a wine of superb length which releases the warmth of the south with every mouthful. With its great tannic structure, we have a wine with wonderful ageing potential. Giorgio our chef tells me at home in Sardinia lamb is the meat of choice this time of year, another tantalising food and wine match. I hope all our turkey lovers won’t be disappointed with me as I have partnered this exceptional red with our beautiful lamb & cannellini bean stew straight from our Fratelli Menu. Buon Natale to you all, I look forward to a new year and another exciting wine odyssey!
Chef Recommendation: Lamb and Cannellini Bean stew Serves 4 Ingredients
• 350g organic lamb scrag end • 75g pancetta or smoked, streaky bacon chopped into small pieces • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped • 1 tsp dried oregano • 1 tsp rosemary (fresh or dried) • Splash of red wine • 400g tin chopped tomatoes • 200ml chicken stock • 400g tin cannellini beans
Method
1. Preheat your oven to gas mark 3/160ºC and get out a medium- sized casserole dish with a lid. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and brown the lamb all over. Place it in the casserole dish for a minute or two while you get on with the rest of the stew. 2. Wipe out the frying pan with a piece of kitchen towel and add the bacon or pancetta. Fry for a few minutes
until cooked and just beginning to turn golden. 3. Stir in the onion, garlic and the herbs. Add the splash of red wine and allow it to bubble up. 4. Stir in the tomatoes and the chicken stock and pour this mixture over the lamb in the casserole dish. Replace the lid and slide into the oven. Leave to cook for 4 hours. 5. Once the 4 hours are up, carefully lift out the lamb joint onto a board or plate and spoon the meat from the bone. It should be very soft. Using a tea towel or oven glove, tip the casserole dish to one side and spoon off the fat that has pooled on the top of the stew and discard. 6. Add the lamb meat back into the stew along with the drained can of cannellini beans and return to the oven to heat through for another 20 minutes. 7. Serve with fresh parsley sprinkled on top and season to taste with salt and pepper.

An insanely stylish home that’s luxurious yet warm and inviting BY CATRIONA DOHERTY
W
hen Elaine Donaghy embarked on a journey to design and build her own home, along with partner Kevin McCrory, little did she know it would inspire a newfound passion for interior design and home décor. Elaine and Kevin began their self-build project, located midway between Omagh
and Cookstown, more than five years ago and the couple moved into their dream home last August. “We wanted to do as much as possible ourselves,” Elaine begins, “so we took our time”. Rather than sticking to a set style or theme, Elaine prefers to choose décor that she is drawn towards, before putting her own stamp on it. The end result is a chic, modern, incredibly stylish home that’s unique to the couple. The bathroom is Elaine’s favourite room in the house, she says: “I have gone quite
Photos by Michael Bradley 76
bold with the colours in the bathroom. I also really love my living and kitchen space; whilst it’s open plan there are lots of different areas within it which can be used for different purposes.” Elaine took Northern Woman on a tour of her home, sharing information on the design elements throughout.
Read more about Elaine’s new build journey on her blog Elaine’s Roves ‘N Troves, visit: www.elainesrovesntroves.com, or look up elainesrovesntroves on Facebook or Instagram.
“Chillier nights are upon us, so we light our stove every night and have a stock of logs close by. My stag sits by them, I bought this for Christmas when I moved in last year, and it has remained there since.” “This was a gift from special friends and I absolutely adore it, we continually have to stock it up as we both love eggs… it’s such a practical display and so cute at the same time.”
“I am obsessed with grey so I opted for a dark grey kitchen that I designed myself, picking bits and pieces I liked from other kitchens before putting them all together. It’s from Hollywood Furnishings. I have large gothic windows in my kitchen and a snug area off it, which let in a lot of natural light and sunshine throughout the day, making the space bright, warm and homely.”
“This area is part of the open plan from my kitchen and snug, I always loved the idea of open plan as you feel you always have company, and it works so well when you are entertaining or hosting large gatherings. The spiral staircase leads to a gallery that overlooks the kitchen. My dining set is from Mc Crystals Fine Furnishings and it is so comfy and is a great size for entertaining. I wanted to differentiate this end of the room so I opted for a geo-style wallpaper to give it its own character.”
77
“One of my favourite rooms, its bright and bold and somewhere I went a bit wild. I always liked the idea of having wallpaper in my bathroom.”
“This is a new addition and I just love it as I think it really complements my paper with the geo-style base and copper colour. I picked this up in MCrystals Fine Furnishings.”
“I start off every morning with water and lemon, so this makes it easy.”
78
“My father designed and built my shower, so that makes it a special piece in my house. He is very talented with his hands.”
“I have a full room as my dressing room, which is so practical. I liked the idea of open-style railing so you can see your clothes. I got the idea of the copper railing from Pinterest, and my father’s creativity was at work once again.”
“I love accessories and candles and I have them dotted throughout the house.”
“I knew what style of bed I wanted but I found it very difficult to get this style in super king size along with matching bedside lockers and chest of drawers. McCrystal’s Fine Furnishings were able to order it specially for me. The wallpaper gives the wall a bit of character.”

Mr and Mrs Haughian

T
yrone bride Sinéad McLaughlin and Armagh groom Emmet Haughian met in 2004 when they were both students at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown. “When we were friends in college, we both wanted something more but neither ever plucked up the courage to pursue anything,” Sinéad begins. “I suppose we were both afraid it could ruin a good friendship.” The pair went their separate ways until fate brought them back together in May 2012 when Sinéad was visiting Toronto. Despite the fact that Emmet lived there at the time and Sinéad lived in Ireland, romance blossomed. “In 2011 my father tragically passed away and that taught me that life was short and to live it – it gave me a new perspective even though a huge part of me had died inside,” Sinéad explains, and so she booked flights to return to Toronto in July. Months passed and then one random night in November, Emmet turned up in her living room. “He was home to surprise me and the rest, as they say, is history,” Sinéad explains. A few years later Emmet popped the question, the couple set the date for 9th June 2017 and began planning their rose gold-themed day. They booked Jude Browne Photography as they admired her “relaxed and effortless style”, and they were delighted with their images. SBD Events styled the reception room, VM Bespoke provided rose gold place names, and DBA Publications created the stationery. Ita McMenamin from Augher made the threetier cake, and Donna Taggart sang at the church. Sinéad looked stunning in an Atelier Pronovias dress accessorised with a satin trim veil, Christian Louboutin shoes, Monsoon clutch bag, June earrings, and a rose gold Thomas Sabo bracelet with ‘Dad’ engraved in the heart; a gift from Emmet. The newlyweds’ most memorable moments from their wedding include Sinéad walking up the aisle with her brother by her side, Donna Taggart singing She Moved Through The Fair, and seeing how happy their family and friends were throughout the day. n

Mr & Mrs Johnstone Photos by Pop Photography
A
ntrim couple Lisa Campbell and Karl Johnstone have known each other since they were children but it wasn’t until Karl asked Lisa’s sister to “put in a good word” in 2010 that the pair began dating. Five years later, Karl popped the question during a helicopter ride over New York. “When we got up into the air, Karl opened a little red box with the most beautiful ring inside – I was very shocked,” Lisa recalls. “The rest of the passengers all clapped and cheered. Safe to say Karl was very embarrassed and of course I said ‘yes!’” Having always loved the idea of a Christmas wedding, Lisa and Karl set the date for 23rd December 2016 at Ballygally Castle. The venue looked like a winter wonderland on the day, decorated with twinkling fairy lights and flickering lanterns. The pair booked Gabby from Pop Photography based on her talent for capturing natural images. Pop Photography made the rustic-style stationery, Lyndsay Smyth Cakes created the three-tier cake, and band Freefall ensured the dance floor didn’t empty all night. Lisa looked radiant in a Justin Alexander dress. “I knew straight away that I loved it, and it was perfect for a Christmas bride as it was covered in embellishment, sequins and jewels,” she recalls. Karl says his wedding day was “amazing from start to finish. It was great, the party continued on through the following day – we had Christmas Eve breakfast in the hotel the following morning and everyone was definitely in the Christmas mood.” Lisa adds: “Having family and friends there to share the day with Karl and I was very special. I loved that everyone put extra effort into their outfits with it being Christmas – there was lots of sparkles and full-length dresses worn on the day.” The couple honeymooned in Thailand and Dubai. n

NORTHERN MAN Jeff Meredith starts planning for 2018
Baubles Jumper from Topman £30
Dinosaur Christmas Jumper from River Island £28
I
’m pretty sure I don’t need to announce it, but Christmas is almost here again and my nephews and nieces are getting more excited by the day. For me as a retailer, Christmas is a long season. I’ve been selling my 2017 Christmas card collection at St George’s Market since the 1st October. I actually started planning new card designs during the summer, probably around the time I was invited to my first Christmas event. Yes you read that right. Christmas trees, crackers and tinsel in August at the launch of the Christmas menu at Knife and Fork in Malone Lodge Hotel. The only thing that was missing was the big lawd in red; apparently it’s near impossible to get Santa down from the frozen north in August. 2017 has been an eventful year for me with a whole host of amazing memories created both personally and professionally. One of the highlights of the year was the Lush Classical concert in SSE Arena. The stuff of legend! Did you go? It felt like the whole of Belfast was there. Sunflowerfest in Hillsborough was also fantastic, and a night of dancing without a care in the world. Good times… the best times! It hasn’t been all about the big nights out though; I have amazing memories of my first ever Dawn Chorus at Castle Espie, that was really
96
special. And my first ever visit to Belfast Rose Week when I cycled along the tow path to Lady Dixon park and relaxed in the sun amongst the smell of thousands of roses. Beautiful. Even just sitting on my laptop working on Christmas card designs overlooking the beach was bliss, or getting out on my bike in the fresh air along the North Down coastal path - sometimes it’s just about the little things. I didn’t get the chance to do a few things I had on my list for this year, but they’ll just roll over into 2018. They include Rathlin Island, Copeland Island, the Peace Maze in Castlewellan, and to get up Slieve Donard and take in the view, or a boat trip out of Bangor Marina. Always so much to do, but no pressure and no rush. No doubt I’ll be on more adventures in 2018, maybe I’ll see you at the top of Slieve Donard fulfilling one of your New Year resolutions. Or maybe I’ll see you on a triathlon somewhere (my brother is trying to convince me that 2018 is the year to do my first one! Eek!). Have a great Christmas this year and thanks for checking out my Northern Man column every month. Cheers Jeff Meredith n

Now that it’s the December issue of Northern Woman, I can finally embrace Christmas and what better way to cover festive fashion than with a few fun jumpers. There seems to be more choice than ever this year, from more traditional red nose reindeers and brightly coloured baubles, to quite random dinosaurs and Santa sharks – there’s a little something to suit all tastes, so there really is no excuse not to join in and have some festive fun.
