Keep Up with Charitable Trends

Oklahoma is a state with heart – we are undoubtedly generous when it comes to giving of our time, talent and treasure to help those in need. Whether you write a check, spend hours at a soup kitchen, or march, run or walk for the causes you believe in, there are numerous opportunities to give back. Within the following pages of Oklahoma Magazine’s 2019 Social Datebook – our annual guide to charitable events and programs in Greater Tulsa and Greater Oklahoma City – you can find a cause to support. Some are small, like intimate gatherings to spread the word on a new nonprofit, while others range from 5Ks with thousands of participants to black-tie affairs raising millions of dollars for at-risk children, devastasting diseases or the less fortunate. Along with a detailed listing of events, we also bring you stories on the changing landscape of philanthropic giving. Where, how and why we give shifts with every generation. Some prefer to support the military, religious institutions and diaster relief; others spend their time supporting civil-rights organizations, youth programs and animal welfare. How we give is changing, too – crowdfunding and online donations are on the rise. And as for why we give, there are several motivators – from supporting family legacies to altruism to a sense of duty. The bottom line is that the 2019 Social Datebook is here for you – to find events, causes and programs you can be passionate about. I hope you find that within this special publication. Vida Schuman Publisher and Founder

P.S. We go to great lengths to ensure any and all charitable events in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City metro areas are included in our guide, but some inevitably get left out, or dates change. To submit an event for the 2020 Social Datebook, email the details to events@okmag.com. 2

Giving Feels Good Contributing time, finances, gifts and talents doesn’t just help the recipients – it benefits the donors, too.

Only James Brown knew for sure what he meant when he sang, “I feel good,” but charitable giving just may be a way to harness some of that souldeep inner warmth. Oklahomans know this well. “Research shows that philanthropy can decrease blood pressure, lengthen your life and provide other health benefits,” says Lindsay Goble-Jordan, founder and chief philanthropic adviser for Write On Fundraising in Tulsa. “But exactly how that happens is highly individualized.” Philanthropic experts frequently cite a 1990s study, “The Seven Faces of Philanthropy,” to describe the values and beliefs 6

SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2019

that motivate people to help charities. These “faces” include those who communicate via giving (so-called communitarians); investors; those who support family legacies; socialites; altruists, who expect nothing in return; “repayers,” who have benefited in life and want to give back; and those who give for religious or spiritual reasons. Many Oklahomans fall in that last category of giving (described in the study as devout), Jordan says. “The Midwest in general has a more conservative, value-based system, and so the ‘devout’

face of giving is big in our population,” she says. “In Oklahoma, it’s not just religious affiliation; it tends to be a specific set of values that dictates how we see the world and life. “You hear it from donors all the time, and it’s true that Tulsa, for example, is one of the most giving places in the United States. It’s because of how people see their role in philanthropy, that they understand the impact and want to be connected to the human condition.” Monica Champ, director of major gifts at Tulsa Community College Foundation, has volunteered with or worked at nonprofits for more than 10 years and agrees about Oklahomans’ giving spirit. “I am so fortunate to know wonderful people who are generous to support numerous philanthropic causes in our community,” she says. “They give so cheerfully. There are many reasons. One [of] the most common reasons I hear donors express is, ‘I’ve been so blessed – I just want to help others who are less fortunate.’”

SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2019

A person doesn’t have to be wealthy to contribute – modest sums and donations of time can provide the soul-enrichment of giving. How much to give or the type of giving may confuse some donors. According to one expert, passion can be a guide. “People often come to the Advancement Group to leave a legacy gift through their estate so that they can support the organizations and causes they are most passionate about,” says Brittany Stokes, the organization’s marketing director. “One amazing thing we get to witness on a daily basis is people from all walks of life excited to learn they can give and make an impact, even when they didn’t feel they had a capacity to make a difference. I don’t think we’ve ever seen someone ever regret a moment they had to impact someone in a positive way. “Whether it’s a financial gift, time spent volunteering or donating gifts and talents, people in Oklahoma love to give, and it’s evident in our community.” TRACY LEGRAND

The Ways We Give Charitable giving trends have changed in recent years. Here’s the latest on where people are giving – and how. Americans are generous. That fact remains the same, even though the ways we give and the causes we help may change from year to year. As we settle into 2019, it can be helpful to see what trends have shifted in the last year and how charitable giving has changed, especially in this era of social activism and with the rising number of natural disasters in our world. From wildfires and floods to earthquakes and hurricanes, disaster relief has been an 10

SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2019

important part of the giving landscape over the last year. The sociopolitical climate has also influenced the amount given to causes close to people’s hearts. If you seek a place where your dollars will make an impact, communities hard hit by disasters continue to suffer and need help long after the media has moved on. Social causes meaningful to you always present an appropriate arena for financial support. Causes in the forefront of the last 12 months are primar-

ily human services-related, with civil rights, women’s issues, and benefits for veterans and active military members leading the pack. Another trend holding strong is educational giving. People love to contribute to their alma maters or to their children’s schools. Charitable giving in the health-care sector has also increased in the past few years, with donations to finding cures for breast cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease on the rise. Religious giving, on the other hand, has experienced a sharp decline as baby boomers retire and generation Xers and millennials, who do not typically prioritize religious giving, make up a growing force in charitable giving. Charitable athletic events and booster-

thons have also declined in popularity, but online benefit events, such as crowdfunding and other internet campaigns, have become effective at encouraging people to give in recent years. Tribute gifts and monthly giving programs remain viable ways for people to fund causes important to them. An interesting trend to watch is that of giving by corporations. Potential changes in the tax code prompted executives in larger companies to raise their giving by 8 percent last year, an increase of over $5 billion. This trend is set to continue through 2019, and nonprofits benefiting from these relationships will likely see a substantial rise in financial donations in the upcoming fiscal year. Giving by the Generation

Motivations, experiences and economics influence donations by various age groups, and different charities benefit. We know how important it is to give back to our communities and to support charitable causes. However, recent research from the Blackbaud Institute indicates that the overall number of philanthropic donations in America has steadily declined since 2013 – for most generations. “There are significant differences that apply to charitable giving between generations, and these are formed largely by the greatest social influences of their time – war, depression, innovation … and technology,” says Lindsay Goble-Jordan, founder and chief philanthropic adviser for Write On Fundraising. “Traditionally, the more mature a generation, the greater their collective giving. This 12

SOCIAL DATEBOOK | 2019

is a reflection of increased giving capacity and accumulation of wealth over their lifetime.” Monica Champ, president-elect of the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Eastern Oklahoma, agrees. “Generally speaking, among individuals who do charitable giving, the greatest generation [from the World War II era] and baby boomers are making larger gifts more frequently because they have more capacity to make gifts,” she says. These older generations, comprising the majority of charitable givers, usually focus donations toward causes related to religion, disaster relief, social services and the military. Generation X and

millennials, often unable to match the charitable volumes of their elders, are passionate about and donate to services for youth and women, humanand civil-rights groups, health-related causes and animal welfare. For the so-called generation Z (people in their early 20s or younger), the environment is of increasing concern. Donations to religious organizations used to dominate the charity landscape, but Jordan says that trend appears to be changing. “Baby boomers are the only generation to list religion in their top three [causes], and it ranks No. 1,” she says. “This is extremely interesting because religious giving in the United States still generates the greatest share of donations every year – in 2017 accounting for 32 percent of all giving. This implies a changing landscape for philanthropy in the near future, and one that many organizations and donors should begin to prepare for now.” While each generation may differ in the amount and choices of donations, Jordan says what brings

everyone together is the method – online giving. “Even baby boomers, who have had the fewest technological privileges among the generations, prefer to receive a fundraising appeal in the mail and make their gift online,” she says. “The days of returning a pre-printed envelope with a check are winding down.” Jordan says individual giving habits and preferences mirror American society. “Philanthropy is simply a tangible expression of our value systems,” she says. “Both the organizations that donors choose to support and the manner in which they choose to give are deeply personal, intimate reflections of the belief systems they hold dear. We are defined in many ways by who we choose to help and how. “This is an ideology embedded within American culture, drafted in between the lines of our very U.S. Constitution, and brought to life every day by the tireless work of millions of dedicated nonprofit staff members, volunteers and community leaders.” TARA MALONE
