Brushes installation Extract the files from zip file (if stored in a zip) The pspbrush files need to be placed in the brushes folder of Paint Shop Pro 速 This varies version to version. With Paint Shop Pro 速, the actual location of the brushes can be changed via the preferences / file locations. For Photo X2, please place the pspBrush and pspScript files into the corel_01 folder or place them in the 'documents and settings' (or 'documents') 'my psp files' brushes folder. As with all versions of PSP, the best way to find the location of the install folder for the brushes is via the file > preferences > file locations. You can always just set your own folder for the brushes

For 8, please place the brushes in the c:\documents and settings' 'user' 'my documents' 'my psp8 files' brushes folder. The brushes can also be placed in the c:\program files\jasc software inc\brushes. For 9, the location can also be 'my psp files' but it can also be beneath 'jasc software inc' in 'brushes' folder.

Accessing PSP brushes

Access the brushes via most of the brush tools such as 'burn' and 'airbrush'. Each brush tool will have its own current selected brush, which can at times be a little confusing. Once selected, the brush can be applied to the current image

Brush properties Each brush tool comes with its own set of properties such as 'wet look' but most have the options to control the hardness, step, density etc and these can all be found via the brush tool properties palette.

or in earlier versions

To change the color of the brush, if that is a valid option for the tool, go to the materials palette and set the color or gradient or pattern to be applied along with texture for brush stroke.

Brushes variance palette

The brushes can be modified in many different ways, changing the size / rotation / position jitter / saturation / color blend etc based on pressure and much more. The brushes can fade in and fade out and oscillate or repeat fade etc of color, lightness, saturation, rotation and others. Some of the brush variance options depend on the brush type and are not enabled.

Here the brush is set to red and the fade in option is set, the initial color is then black and that 'fades' to red.

Here the brush is initially set to red but the brushes variance palette jitter for the color blend is set 30%. Instead of a single red, subtle variant red brush strokes are generated Experiment with the brushes variance but if you make a mistake or wish to get back to the initial value, just click the reset button at the bottom of the dialog

Brushes rotation The brushes can be applied as is or rotated 360 degrees or anything in between via the brushes palette

90 degrees...

Or use the brushes variance palette and rotate each dab by a new angle (or set the rotation by pressure etc)

Brush tools Paint Shop Pro 速 comes with many different brush tools such as clone, burn, smudge, paint, air brush. Please check the documentation for each tool as well as the many internet sites devoted to hints and tips of brush use. The burn tool can be used for overlays or watermarks.

The paint tool can be used to apply color or pattern or gradient.

The erase tool is useful for creating frames. Create a new layer and apply a fill; apply the erase tool with the required brush tip, revealing more of the underlying image

The brush tools can be applied using the normal blend mode but many wonderful designs can be created by applying the brushes with different blending modes such as 'exclusion' 'difference'

Brushes steps Different brush strokes can be created using the steps setting, creating a continuous flow or dabs. Control the number of steps between applications via the steps property

Brushes as Paint Shop Pro 速 tubes The brush stroke can be re-saved as a tube. Apply brush strokes to a transparent background, apply effects such as emboss or bevel, and then save the brush stroke as a new picture tube. Use the picture tube psptube file with the picture tube tool

Brushes to picture frames Or use the erase tool and brush stroke to create a frame image and save as a picture frame. Use as a frame via the picture frame tool.

Photoshop brushes for Paint Shop Pro Many of the later sets of Photoshop brushes http://www.graphicxtras.com/products/psbrush.htm includes brushes in PNG format. The brushes can be used in PSP. Simply open the brush files via file > open command, open PSP brushes palette and save the brush to the current palette.
