WELCOME TO NMSU
What comes to mind when you hear the term “stomping grounds?” For me, it immediately conjures images of roaming my childhood neighborhood with my brother and friends for years. After some thought, more memories surface: my high school halls, the back roads of my home town, and for four amazing years, my college campus. I lived in the dorms for two years, and at a nearby apartment for two more, so my campus was a literal and figurative stomping ground. New Mexico State University is now your stomping ground, where precious memories and cherished friendships will be made. You’ll learn things you need to know, want to know and a few things you don’t. Use this guide to navigate campus and learn about resources available to you, from mental and physical health care to free printing, discount books and good eats. Pick up the Bulletin each week to learn about the Las Cruces community, Desert Exposure monthly to learn about our region or drop by to pick up copies of annual publications such as the Life is Good in Las Cruces community guide or Southwest New Mexico Legislative Guide. We’re at 1740-A Calle de Mercado, about 3 miles from campus.

Hello Aggies! Welcome to New Mexico State University. During your time on campus, you will find that NMSU is a caring community that transforms lives through discovery. This is where our students discover more about themselves, who they are and what they want to do with their lives. We help our students grow and always take the time to guide and mentor our students throughout their college careers, and beyond. At NMSU, students have an opportunity to develop both their academic and leadership skills. They can join our talented faculty and staff in taking part in exciting research, teaching and outreach activities that happen here every day. Our students also can participate in many of the outstanding activities that take place on campus, including theatrical performances, athletic events, academic conferences and other presentations. “HOME OF THE DOLLAR SLICES”
Welcome TO
My name is Kevin Prieto and it is an honor to be able to serve as the Student Body President for the Associated Students of New Mexico State University for this upcoming year. ASNMSU is the student government at New Mexico Sate University. We work hard to provide free services to students like our free concerts, Crimson Cab/Aggie Transit, free Scrantons and community discounts to make going to college even more of a memorable experience. I was fortunate to have been raised in Las Cruces. Through my years here I have found it to be a perfect place to live and attend school. With the city’s remarkable natural beauty and its everlasting culture it is easy to understand why it is referred to as the “Land of Enchantment”. In my tenure, I hope to build a strong bond between our university and the Las Cruces community. I want every student to enjoy all the wonderful things NMSU has to offer. If I had one piece of advice for any incoming student, I would say don’t be afraid to get involved. NMSU has over 200 student organizations, and there is something for everyone. NMSU has really made me a stronger leader in so many different ways and can help any student excel in what they love. I am confident you will enjoy becoming an Aggie just as much as I have. Here is to another great year! Go Aggies!

Tips for living Essentials for living with a roommate on campus For many students, college will be the first time they live with a roommate. If you’ve never lived with a peer before, it can present some challenges. It has the potential to turn into a long-term friendship, but if it doesn’t, that’s OK, too. Whether you picked your roomie, or he/she was assigned to your campus residence, here are some tips to navigate the scenario. •R espect boundaries. Ask permission to use each other’s dishes, food, items, etc. •B e willing to communicate directly and negotiate concerns with each other. • Learn to be flexible and how to reach fair compromises. •B e mindful of the other person’s schedule, such as for sleeping, classes, work, etc. • Try to keep your joint space clean and organized, even if the other person doesn’t. •B e civil. Don’t feel obligated to become lifelong friends, but treat each other respectfully. •D on’t let their bad habits become yours. Negative attitudes can be contagious. If your roommate always tries to steer conversation into a negative place, don’t feed into it. Quickly end the conversation and get on with your day. • Remember conflict is inevitable in interpersonal relationships and is not always a bad thing. Be upfront. Keep it kind, but honest. • Develop ground rules or set a roommate agreement early on to make your expectations clear about thing like food sharing, study times and guests.

Aggie traditions Crimson & White One of the most basic symbols that triggers emotion, pride and a sense of identity is color, and when you’re an Aggie, those colors are crimson and white. Crimson is one of the most emotionally stimulating of all the colors in the spectrum. It has the widest depth of symbolism ranging from passion to anger. Crimson represents power, vigor, leadership and strength. White, to many, represents purity, innocence, prestige and good. White, in many cultures, is also suggestive of the springtime and summer, the seasons when crops are planted – a key aspect of this university, as it deals with agriculture. In the education setting, white represents new beginnings.
Victory bell In the 1940s, the Victory Bell, a gift of the class of 1939, was housed in an open‑sided structure on the Horseshoe and rung to announce Aggie victories. In 1972, the bell was rededicated as the NM State Engineer’s Bell and now sits at Aggie Memorial Stadium. On game days, various school organizations take turns toting the ringing bell around Las Cruces prior to kickoff. The bell then sits at Aggie Memorial Stadium waiting to give off a triumphant chime.
Fight song Aggies, Oh Aggies! The hills send back the cry, We’re here to do or die! Aggies, Oh Aggies! We’ll win this game or know the reason why!
And when we win this game, We’ll buy a keg of booze, And we’ll drink it to the Aggies ‘til we wobble in our shoes! A‑‑‑G‑‑‑G‑‑‑I‑‑‑E‑‑‑S‑‑! AGGIES! AGGIES! GO AGGIES!
The ’A’ One of NM State’s most cherished traditions is that of the
“A.” For generations, the “A” has been emblazoned on many items, buildings and landmarks, boldly signifying Aggie pride. The most popular and visible “A” is an annual NM State tradition – the painting of the “A” on Tortugas Mountain east of campus. The “A” stands 330 feet tall, roughly the length of a football field.

Cheerleaders
The NM State cheerleaders have two spirit squads – a co‑ed squad and an all‑female squad. The squads attend a Universal Cheerleading Camp and begin practices early in preparation for the football season. In the fall, both squads cheer at the NMSU football games. During basketball season, the co‑ed squad cheers at men’s basketball games and the all‑female squad cheers at women’s basketball games. In addition, the NM State cheerleaders are asked to make many public appearances throughout the year at other athletic events, as well as university and community events.
The ’PRIDE’ marching band The “PRIDE” of New Mexico is the marching band at New Mexico State University. The “PRIDE” hosts the Tournament of Bands, a major marching band competition held in the fall, during which high school bands come from all parts of the Southwest to participate. The competition lasts all day, with a final competition at night. The “PRIDE” holds two exhibition performances at the Tournament of Bands. The members and staff of the “PRIDE” make it their goal to be the best marching band in the nation. The “PRIDE” is not just an ensemble, it is a family whose ties last forever.

Course catalogs and managing a schedule can be overwhelming. As a student it’s common to take on more classes than you can handle, sometimes taking a class you didn’t need instead of what was required. Your academic advisor is there to help you stay on track. The most important aspect of advising is ensuring that the classes you take fulfill your degree and/or the university’s requirements. By the time you graduate, you’ll have mastered the Star Audit system, accessible via your MyNMSU account, but the audit might initially be difficult for a student to interpret. Your adviser should be well-versed in doing so, and they will be able to help you balance required classes as well as some of the fun courses NMSU offers. NMSU does not have centralized advising. Each college within the university and even departments within the college will follow a different advising model. Remember, advisors are busy people. Plan ahead, be on time and, when possible, try to get on the schedule early. You will be required to get advised in order to register for classes each semester. If you do not get advised, your account will have holds put on it, prohibiting you from registering. Keep in mind that an advisor’s purview extends beyond mere class registration. If you are struggling with balancing your academic workload with a job or family life, your academic advisor is an important resource. Advisors can be allies and guides, connecting you with resources to help you solve your unique challenges. A full list of college and departmental advisers can be found online at advising.nmsu.edu.
How to drop a class Sometimes it takes a few weeks to realize you took on one class too many or that just-for-fun class is not so fun after all. There’s no shame in dropping a class, and you can get out of it without hurting your GPA— but only if you act in time.
• Help you choose a major, learn about degrees and graduation requirements • Help you select, add or drop a course • Monitor your academic progress •P rovide you with information, answer questions and complete any necessary paperwork • Help you understand NMSU policies, procedures and deadlines • Connect you to resources that promote success in and out of the classroom

If you find yourself in need of legal advice, ASNMSU has a licensed lawyer on staff whom you can meet with to discuss any legal problems you have. Karl Rysted is licensed in Oklahoma and New Mexico, and can render legal advice and, in rare instances, court representation for students. You have already paid for his services through student fees, so Rysted will meet with you for an hour free of charge. If after the consultation you think you need further legal representation, Rysted can provide private attorney referrals. Employed by ASNMSU, licensed attorney Karl Rysted cannot advise you on issues dealing with ASNMSU or NMSU since it would be a conflict of interest, but he can help you with numerous other problems like landlord/tenant issues and constitutional law. To set up an appointment, visit the Student Legal Aid webpage on the NMSU website and fill out the intake form and email it to krysted@nmsu.edu.

Find your study space So, your roommate is awesome and you watch all the same shows. There’s never a dull moment, and everything is great until you have a test the next day, and your new friends are just a lot more interesting than your notes. Often student residences aren’t the best place to study, whether there are too many distractions or you’re just bored of the same scenery. Luckily, there are numerous quiet places on your new stomping ground to study on and off campus, and with the temperate autumns of Las Cruces, there are always outdoor options.

Beat the blues with help from on-campus counseling Balancing classes, new friends, keeping in touch with family and work can leave a student overwhelmed. Recognizing that a student’s academic success depends on their emotional well-being, NMSU offers a number of resources for students in caring for their mental health. Whether you have struggled all your life or are just going through a rough time, the International Association of Counseling Services accredited NMSU Counseling Center can help. The services are free and confidential. Some of the most common reasons students seek counseling are depression, anxiety (both can be brought on by feeling homesick), relationship concerns and academic worries. Free counseling services are available at the NMSU Counseling Center located in the Campus Health Center on the corner of Breland and Stewart. The counseling staff consists of licensed psychologists, psychology residents completing post-doctoral hours, licensed counselors, and a social worker. One-on-one appointments are available on a limited basis, so it’s likely you’ll be scheduled for such a session once every two weeks. But there are several group-therapy options that meet every week. In addition, the NMSU Student Health Center offers mental health services, where students can get prescriptions for anti-anxiety, anti-depressants and other drugs, for a fee that can be billed to your student account.
TIPS TO MANAGE STRESS
•P rioritize: If your eight-page essay is due tomorrow and that fun poster isn’t due until next week, you better put away the markers. Set easy or fun assignments as “rewards” after the more demanding ones. • Take breaks: Unless you are writing a work of heartbreaking genius, you shouldn’t be crying over your laptop. Allow yourself five minutes to stretch or step outside. Avoid taking “online” breaks. You don’t need to fall down a Buzzfeed quiz hole, and your eyes will appreciate time away from the bright screen. • H20 and Vitamin D: Our basic needs are often the ones we ignore. Treat yourself better than a houseplant, and make sure you’re getting a little sun/fresh air and plenty of water. We’re familiar with “hanger” but dehydration can add to our stress when we are already feeling overwhelmed or depressed. Eat well. Exercise. Get plenty of rest. There will be all sorts of new social opportunities, but don’t be afraid to say “no” and stay in when you need the sleep. •S peak up: Don’t bottle up negative emotions. Whether its roommates, friends or teachers, assertive and thoughtful communication can help you express how you feel, avoid miscommunications, and gives others the opportunity to help you sort it out and stay on track. • Ask for help: The NMSU Counseling Center has a variety of tools and services that can help in times in need. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

Be in the know about sexual assault
Keep yourself safe from the dangers of alcohol
As a freshman in college you may be excited for the school year to begin and yet also feel apprehension about what to expect. There will be many new experiences in your future. With a new sense of independence can come some difficult choices. One of the many things you will encounter is alcohol. There will be many opportunities for you to drink, and there is a common misperception that for you to have the college “experience” and “fit in” you should drink, despite being underage. Should you decide to drink, there are ways to reduce your risk of potentially serious consequences. • Always use a designated driver. NMSU has several options for free rides, including Crimson Cab, Crimson Coach and Pete’s Pick Up. • Set a drinking limit and don’t play drinking games. Avoid binge drinking (five drinks for men and four drinks for women in a period of two hours or less). Binge drinking can lead to blacking out, passing out and alcohol poisoning. To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, you can alternate drinks with non-alcoholic drinks to slow down the process of intoxication. Keep track of the number of drinks you have as the night goes on. • Utilize the buddy system. Sexual assault is an issue that affects both men and women, and the buddy system can help you safeguard each other. Never leave your buddy
of you
• Watch other people’s drinks. If you notice someone has put something in someone’s drink, do something about it. Stop the person from doing it and stop the person from drinking it. Or if it’s more comfortable for you, tell someone else and they can step in. • Be careful while drinking, in general. Alcohol is the number one drug used to initiate sexual assault. It is important to know that consent cannot be given when a person is intoxicated. Consent is a sober, verbal, and continuous yes. • Don’t be a bystander. If you see someone getting sexually assaulted, help them. If someone comes to you claiming to be victim, believe them and help them. Contact the police or reach out to area resources such as La Piñon rape crisis center at 575-526-3437, the WAVE office at 575-646-2813, the Counseling Center at 575-646-2731 and the Office of Institutional Equity at 575-646-3635. If you ever find yourself in a situation with your partner where things are starting to go to the next level and you feel uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to say “no.” Or if your partner says “no” or that they’re uncomfortable, stop and don’t get upset. Listen to them and respect their wishes.
TAKING CARE
Campus sexual assault is an uncomfortable topic, but one that must be talked about. Did you know that one in six women have been a victim of attempted or completed rape in her lifetime and 3 percent of men have been a victim of attempted or completed rape in their lifetime? While in college, a young woman’s risk increases to one in four chance of being sexually assaulted. This means that someone you may already know or someone you may meet has been a victim of sexual assault. So what exactly qualifies as sexual assault? Sexual assault may consist of sexual harassment, stalking, sexual coercion, sexual contact (unwanted fondling/ groping, attempted rape, and rape). Often, the victim of sexual assault or rape faces blame and shaming. It is never the victim’s fault. Ever. Rape and sexual assault are not crimes of passion and love. Rape and sexual assault is about power and control. So what can you, as men and women of this campus, do to help prevent sexual assault? • When you go out be safe and stay together. Large parties can be fun, but they can also be dangerous. Make sure to keep track of your drink. Don’t leave it unattended and don’t accept a drink that has already been opened for you. You can’t be positive of what’s in the drink.
somewhere if you feel it is unsafe. Be accountable for each other! Never leave with a person you just met; exchange numbers and meet up while you both are sober. • Keep an eye on your drink. Never leave your drink unattended to protect yourself from date rape drugs. Avoid drinking from punch bowls or pitchers, since they are easy to drug and it is difficult to tell how much alcohol it contains. • Eat before and/or during partying. This will help your body soak up excess alcohol, and will help prevent you from drinking too much, too fast. • Never hesitate to call for help. If someone is showing signs of alcohol poisoning (shallow breathing, clammy skin, vomiting, blacking out and/or passing out), call 911 immediately. Never try to give the person a cold shower, coffee, or allow them to sleep it off. Alcohol may be legal (at least for those who are 21) and it comes in many different flavors, with lots of colors and pretty bottles, but it is still a dangerous drug that you can overdose on, or become addicted to over time.

Ingredients 1 packet dry yeast (in the baking aisle of most grocery stores) 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for brushing the dough 1 teaspoon kosher salt 3 cups flour, plus extra for dusting your work surface 1 cup slightly warm water Directions If you have a mixer, great; if not, don’t worry! You can mix the ingredients by hand. First combine yeast and warm water in a bowl and let stand for 5 minutes. It should look a little foamy. Add the sugar, oil, and salt into the yeast mixture. Slowly add flour. Transfer your dough to a clean surface such as a large cutting board or your floured counter top. Knead until it forms a smooth ball. Set it back in the bowl and cover with a towel. Place in a warm area and ignore it for an hour to let the dough rise. Divide the dough in half and roll out two 12 inch circles, or save half the dough for another day by wrapping and storing in the fridge. Finish with your favorite toppings and cook at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes.

• Use high-quality “U” locks on all bicycles, locking both the frame and front tire to the rack. • When in an interpersonal relationship, remember that “no” means exactly that. If the other person is asleep, intoxicated or drugged, they are incapable of giving consent. Any sexual contact at that point is a crime — no matter what they may have said or done earlier. • Roll up windows and lock doors on vehicles and campus residences. Do not leave property in plain sight from windows, or anywhere on campus unattended. • Be aware of potential scams via phone calls or email. Don’t give out personal information over the phone unless you are sure of the source of the request. • If you see someone else in danger, say something, do something and call for help. If you see an unsafe condition like a fallen tree limb or power line, flooded streets or other hazards, report it promptly.

Students at NMSU can find temporary, seasonal, parttime or full-time work or internships with the help of Aggie Career Manager. To utilize this tool, you will need to register online at www.myinterfase.com/nmsu/Account/LogOn with your Aggie ID number, which will serve as your username. Once you have created a profile, you can upload documents — such as resumes, cover letters, letters of recommendation — to your account and submit these documents to jobs for which you want to apply. Local, regional and national employers have postings on the site, as well as work-study opportunities. You can search or browse through the listings and even save a job to apply for later. Be warned: Though NMSU Career Services tries to vet each posting, some fraudulent jobs or even scams get through. If a job seems too good to be true, it probably is and should be reported to Career Services to be removed immediately. Save money by printing on campus
Ink cartridges are expensive, so if you must print something, you may want to use on-campus printers and computers. Your NMSU student ID comes pre-loaded with $20 each school year ($10 for part-time students). This money can be used to print through on-campus computers. There are two types of printers on campus, with comparable pricing.
WEPA PRINTERS
WEPA printers cost 10 cents per one-sided black and white or color page, 15 cents per double-sided black and white and 20 cents per double-sided color.
