iris festival Chairman’s Letter The Sumter Iris Festival Commission is so excited to celebrate its 79th Anniversary May 24–26, 2019, at Swan Lake Iris Gardens. This event is Sumter’s oldest and largest festival. The event was first held in 1940, and from the very beginning has brought thousands of people from around the state to our great city. This year’s festival has some special surprises in store that we hope you will really enjoy. We look forward to welcoming people from across the Southeast, and we hope their stay will be a great one. The Iris Festival is an annual tradition and has been named one of the “Top 20 Events” by the Southeast Tourism Society, as well as one of the Top 100 Events in the United States to visit by the American Bus Association. As in years past, this year’s festival will be filled with entertainment the entire family can enjoy. From the kid’s area in the Heath Gardens to the Bland Garden, there is something for everyone. All Friday through Sunday events, including all the children’s activities, are free! The fun begins on Thursday, May 23 with the Taste at the Gardens. The “Taste” offers great food prepared by local restaurants and individuals and music for everyone to enjoy. No need to purchase food tickets this year. Cash will be accepted by the vendors. We are excited to welcome Elijah Bradford and the Valentinos as our musical guests during the Taste. Tickets are available at the gate for a $5 donation, and children 5 and under are admitted FREE. The event is from 6– 9 p.m. On Friday, May 24, while the Arts & Crafts and Marketplace vendors are setting up, Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital Community Health Initiatives will offer free health screenings at the Swan Lake Visitors Center from 9 – 11 a.m. The screening requires a 12–hour fast. As always, one of the festival’s most popular events will return and offer even more fun for the family. The Jamil Shriner

Streakers of Sumter’s Annual Shrine Day Parade will be Saturday, May 25 at 10 a.m. Make note that the parade will start at the Sumter County Civic Center, move down Liberty Street and turn up Alice Drive. The Iris Festival Commission is very excited to have a special guest artist this year, Michael Duffy. Michael Duffy is a long time resident of Sumter having come here in 1959 as a “military brat.” He is an educator, an actor and a sculptor specializing in freehand concrete and plaster. His work can be seen all over Sumter. Duffy will be working live on-site at the festival throughout the weekend. Come visit him in the Bland Gardens across the bridge. All three days of the festival are packed with things to see and explore along with live entertainment. Admission to the festival is FREE. Ongoing events throughout will include Art in the Gardens, Gateway to Gardening, Arts & Crafts, Food Court, Marketplace, ”Just Kidding Around” Children’s Area (Fairway), Children’s Art in the Park and much more. Check this Iris Festival book for the times of the events you would like to participate in during the festival. I would like to thank everyone who has worked with the 2019 Iris Festival and give a special thanks to the Swan Lake Garden staff who keep the gardens beautiful all year. I would also like to thank our sponsors because without them, we could not offer this wonderful event to the public at no admission charge each year. Most of all, we want to pass along a big “THANK YOU” to our community for all the support and encouragement that it gives us throughout the year. It is truly special to offer this event each year, and it is only possible because Sumter is the BEST community anywhere! We hope you enjoy all the events and we will see you at the gardens! iris festival Elijah Bradford and the Valentinos Sumter band headlines the Iris Festival

Elijah Bradford and the Valentinos are about to shake the foundation of Sumter once again. The soulful band is set to headline the Iris Festival Taste of the Gardens, which features great music and great food from some of the area's leading restaurants and caterers. The May 23 event will take place at the Swan Lake Iris Gardens from 6 – 9 p.m. At the age of 5, Elijah Bradford began singing in his church and was inspired at age 11 to play piano by Twinkie Clark of the famed female gospel group, the Clark Sisters. He spent years quietly honing his talents behind his bedroom doors, listening to records by Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Dorothy Love-Coates and Ray Charles on repeat. The band, who has opened for The O’Jays, Stephanie Mills and recently finished a three week appearance at the World Famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York, will perform music from some of your favorite artist including The Temptations, The Beatles, Wild Cherry, The Drifters, The Four Tops, James Brown and more. Elijah Bradford and the Valentinos, who are also dedicated husbands and fathers, began in 2012. “We believe music is a medicine, God is the ingredient, and we write the prescription. I pour my heart and soul out on stage … I leave it all there. I want the audience to leave lifted and encouraged to know that life is not as hard as it seems,” said Bradford who also writes, arranges and records music for the band. The fresh, energetic band is becoming a staple at cooperate events, live concerts and house concerts bringing their eclectic joyful noise of Soul, Funk, Beach Music, and R&B to audiences of all sizes. And now with their crowd-pleasing performance on FOX TV’s "Showtime at the Apollo", Elijah Bradford and the Valentinos are destined to become a household name. In his own journey as a musician, it’s quite apparent that, Bradford is inspired by his idols on a daily basis. It’s clear that he sees himself as a student of these greats he pays homage to. What a treat for fans at the Iris Festival, Taste of the Gardens to see what he’s listened to and how it’s helped him evolve to create his own signature sound. He recently recorded his own version of the Tempations’ "Pappa Was A Rolling Stone" tilted "Jesus Rolled the Stone." Sumter may not be known for its soul, but on May 23 the city will be represented in the most harmonious way, paying homage to sounds new and old in the heart of our city.

GUIDE TO THE IRIS FESTIVAL 2019 • A SUPPLEMENT TO THE SUMTER ITEM 27

iris festival Anastasia Patterson Come out to the festival and talk with South Carolina Angler Anastasia Patterson. A Sumter native, the 23-year-old is pursuing her dream to become a professional angler, and she has started fishing the Fishing League Worldwide Costa tournaments and Bass Fishing League (BFL), adapting to different lakes and situations, establishing patterns, building relationships and chasing a dream. Patterson was raised in the outdoors from a young age, so much so that it is in her blood. It is her passion. Before she could even walk, her dad carried her to hunt and fish and it became a way of life and not a mere past time. In fact, it became her dream to be able to become competitive in fishing at the professional level. Growing up, Patterson was involved in almost everything Sumter had to offer from church to choir to softball to scouts, competitive cheerleading, competitive dance, art, bowling, pageantry, sporting clays, philanthropy, theater, hunting and fishing. With a full slate, Anastasia would often wake up before the sun just to get a line in the water so she did not have to play hooky from school. While her dad and she often targeted many species, bass was always her favorite catch. Her eyes would light up whenever she set the hook on one and her dad knew she had a fire inside of her to be good at it. She would always watch fishing shows when she had the chance. She was always infatuated by the mega bass that she would see people bringing in at local weigh-ins but especially when a big tour would roll through town. When she was around 13, she began to pay more attention to others fishing; down to what their wrist and hips looked like when they cast. She watched how they interacted with people on and off the water, the placement of their hands when tying knots, the tremendous support systems and the sponsorships. She studied how patterns effected these people and the confidence the anglers had up on the weigh-in stage. She knew this sport was something she wanted to get more heavily involved in, so she did a few local tournaments. It became her dream to be able to become competitive at the professional level. But, with a busy schedule and no high school team, tournaments kind of fell to the backburner in order to get ready for college. All while knowing in the back of her mind that tournament fishing was something she could not just let go of. By the time she graduated high school and went to college in 2014, Patterson had pretty much written off that fishing would be something she could do nonrecreationally. Her school did not have a team, and there did not seem to be that much interest among other students. Though it seemed like it would 28 GUIDE TO THE IRIS FESTIVAL 2019 • A SUPPLEMENT TO THE SUMTER ITEM

never happen, she would pray that if this dream was meant to be, it would be. During the first week of her junior year at Presbyterian College, she heard there were other students interested in starting a college team. She immediately jumped on board and became a founding member of the Presbyterian College Bass Fishing Team. It was an easy “yes” for her. During that time, she was the team’s VPII, communications director, treasurer and secretary. With graduation on the horizon, all she could imagine herself doing after college was fishing. She did not know how, but somehow God made a way. Esther 4:14 says, “Perhaps you were made for such a time as this.” Staying willing and open to what was in store for her was not the easiest thing to do. Anastasia doubted her abilities and almost gave up on her dreams, but now she is more ready than ever for what lies ahead. Since graduating from Presbyterian College, where she majored in political science and minored in theater, Patterson is now a professional bass angler

striving to be an advocate for women and diversity within the industry while chasing her dreams. Patterson has won a few local tournaments and college team trials, but her dream would be to win the Bassmaster Classic or the Forrest Wood Cup one day. The biggest lake largemouth bass has she caught was 9 pound 8 ounce at Santee. That is just a few ounces shy of every angler’s dream of catching a 10-pound largemouth. She has caught a 12-pound bass in a pond. Come visit Anastasia Patterson on the Garden Street Side of the lake and learn more about her career.

iris festival "The Chicken Man" Looking for a one-of-a-kind gift item to take back with you from The Iris Festival? Come get a special piece from “The Chicken Man.” Folk artist Ernest Lee, best known as "The Chicken Man," is returning to the festival again this year. A native of Edgefield, Lee has been drawing since he was 5 years old and painting since he was 12. While considered an "outsider artist," Lee has studied art at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Alexandria, Virginia, and the Rose Hill Art Center in Aiken. A prolific artist, he is best-known for his dancing chicken paintings, though he also paints dogs, cats, flamingos and celebrities. He describes his unique brand of folk art as a process. "I do [paint] from my heart, not

from pictures. Be what you are, do not be what you ain't. Because if you be what you ain't, then you ain't what you are." Lee is well-known in Columbia, where for many years he maintained an outdoor street corner gallery with his van and trailer. When he is not there, he is attending one of the many art festivals he participates in throughout the year. He says he has painted 11,000 pieces in the last eight years. Lee's work has been exhibited in such places as the South Carolina State Museum and the Martin Luther King Jr. Library in Washington, D.C.. Come visit “The Chicken Man” in the Bland Gardens on the north side of the Swan Lake Iris Gardens across the bridge.

iris festival Artist Michael Duffy Come visit the Iris Festival’s featured local artist, Michael Duffy, in the Bland Gardens on the north side of the famous Swan Lake-Iris Gardens. Michael Duffy is a long time resident of Sumter having come here in 1959 as a military brat. He is an educator, an actor and a sculptor specializing in freehand concrete and plaster. Duffy is a product of Sumter County schools and graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1972. As a younger man, he was an auctioneer and antique dealer and owned and operated a number of businesses. His love of literature and theater caused him to become involved with the Sumter Little Theatre youth program in the early 1980s. This, in turn, led him to a career in education. Michael works primarily in ferrocement sculpture, creating fanciful garden sculptures and some small plaster works. His artwork inhabits gardens throughout the city. In June, he plans to retire from teaching to devote his time to his wife, travel, art and his adorable grandson, John.
